Book Description

Family connections are vitally important to children as they begin to find their place in the world. For transracial and transcultural adoptees, domestic adoptees, and for children in foster care or kinship placements, celebrating the differences within their families as well as the similarities that connect them, is the foundation for belonging. As parents or caregivers, we can strengthen our children's tie to family and embrace the differences that make them unique. Each child will have their own story and their own special place to belong.

This beautifully illustrated and uplifting book, for the 2-5 set, will help to create the intimate parent/caregiver and child bond that is so important. While others may notice the physical differences between us on the outside, inside we are the same.

2 out of 5 stars nice text, weird illustrations.......2007-09-11

This book is chock full of really lovely sentiment regarding how similar we are ... on the inside...(gross paraphrase)

Unfortunately, the illustrations are freakish. I don't know how else to characterize them. My kids were totally turned off by the way people looked in the story. The mom on the first page looks like one of those dolls with the blue eyes that open and close.

On the other hand, I could see that my 10 year old was intrigued by the text. She couldn't stand the illustrations, though.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-08-09

Our red-haired, blue-eyed son and his similarly endowed wife are in the process of pursuing a Vietnamese adoption, so the title of this book attracted my attention immediately. I was quite disappointed in it, however, because it's entirely too specific in listing the ways in which parent and child who do not look alike are still similar. I was especially put off by the religious portion...my son and his wife are not religious, nor are we, but the book assumes that the parent adopting the child is and will pass on that tradition. The book is useless for us and will be passed on to the library sale. The other book I purchased, "The Red Blanket", is vastly superior, both in text and illustration.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this book........2007-08-05

This is one of the best childrens' books I have ever read. I think its essential for children who have been adopted and its a great book for children not adopted because it gives children at a young age the idea of how special adoption really is. What I loved about the book is that it doesn't just talk about eyes, but legs, and nose...etc. The child is saying in the book I didn't get my features from you but look at all the important things I got from you such as your way of looking at life. It was beautiful, just beautiful. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Daughter likes it !.......2007-04-07

My 3 year old daughter adopted from China likes this book very much, she likes to follow along with the pictures and calls out "pop pop" etc. in reponse to the various people pictured in the book. We like this one!

1 out of 5 stars I liked it, daughter did not........2006-12-21

As the adoptive Anglo dad of a now 5.5 yr old Chinese daughter this books title and description spoke to me... When it arrived and I read it to my daughter she was quiet... then asked for a different story. She later shared with her mom that she didn't like the story (which I could tell from her reaction while I was reading it) and she did not know how to tell me that without hurting my feelings.. So, as we all know, every human is different. My daughter did not like this book,I did. WHo did I buy it for? Well- it was for US to share, so knowing that SHE does not like it I have to rate this a "1" even though I enjoyed it. PL

Although readers may quibble over how "legendary" a few of these subjects are or the greatness of some of their literary portrayers, this glossy tome deserves readers' attention. Brief, punchy text is paired with arresting black-and-white photos of a melange of remarkable women, such as Frida Kahlo, Aung San Suu Kyi, Rachel Carson, Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, Marilyn Monroe, and Josephine Baker. The result is an unholy, but thoroughly enjoyable, jostling throng where sex symbols rub elbows with world leaders and artists spill drinks on reformers.

Alma Guillermoprieto emblazons the later years of mercurial modern dance pioneer Martha Graham's life. Once a dance student at Graham's vaunted studio, she remembers that "as Martha wove through our ranks she would snarl, and pinch and slap us, evidently enraged by our sloppy posture, our dishevelment, our general lack of presence." Camille Paglia talks of what Amelia Earhart meant to her as an American teenager in the early 1960s, railing against restrictive sex roles while "marooned in a desert of perky blondes." Cynthia Ozick takes aim at Gertrude Stein, Joan Didion at Georgia O'Keefe, and Diane Ackerman at Beryl Markham. Margeretta Mitchell recalls photographer Imogen Cunningham striding San Francisco in her beaded cap and white bangs, proclaiming by her acts "that it was possible to grow old working; to maintain interest in life; to be wholly oneself." Far from being fluff, many of these excerpts from longer writings are as provocative and engaging as the legends they embellish. --Francesca Coltrera

Book Description

Rendered by women artists and writers, these portraits illuminate the most influential women of our time. Liv Ullman marvels at Anne Frank’s faith in the face of atrocity. Claudia Roth Pierpont explores how Virginia Woolf’s atypical persona informed literature for the next hundred years. Camille Paglia champions Amelia Earhart as a pioneer who invaded the male world. The book also celebrates the fire of Angela Davis, the courage of Aung San Suu Kyi, the brains of Eleanor Roosevelt, and the brio of Ella Fitzgerald. The essays are accompanied by striking duotone photographs by such photographers as Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, and Cecil Beaton. Pairings include Joan Didion on Georgia O’Keeffe, Terry Tempest Williams on Rachel Carson, and Gloria Steinem on Marilyn Monroe.

After reading Legends 2 : Women Who Changed the World through the Eyes of Great Women Writers by John Miller, Kirsten Miller (September 2004) my curiosity to know more about `the women who are considered legendary' in our times, lead me to the original Legends by John Miller.
As my life is always inspired by those who `live their purpose' I was not disappointed by John Miller's daring assemblage of writers to optimize in words, their thoughts of contemporary iconic women from Golda Meir, Bette Davis, Josephine Baker, Zora Neale Hurston, Helen Keller, to the power of Georgia O'Keeffe, the bravery of Amelia Earhart, the beauty and wit of Lucille Ball, to the omni-presence of Oprah Winfrey.
As I tackle my days of mountains and mountains of to do's, during my mandated 3:00 mediation time, I read a page for renewal and inspiration to tackle the next contract, the next segment of my radio show or write the next review. Each well written snapshot of each of these heroic women is pure energetic inspiration. Reading the shards of Ella Fitzgerald life, reminds me of how far our world has come and how GOD has kept watch over "women" who are the perpetual of the world (not the destroyers as our gender counter part seem). The passions of Martha Stewart no matter what is said, you can not tarnished her business greatness for turning the mundane into an empire, (no matter what you think today).
As I continue to read, I want my daughter to now know these books, Legends. I want her to know and revere the women who faced odds and simply saw obstacles as `what you face in life.' Babe Didrikson Zaharias, an Olympic Athlete, faced it all; controversy, cancer and unbelievable discrimination to live her purpose. Anne Frank, has shown us that our greatness will rise, no matter what the circumstances. Marion Anderson exhibited that greatness will fulfill its purpose, no matter where; before a segregated audience or from the Lincoln Memorial.
Women. We make the world revolve, we create new life, and we are the reason for the term `a glass ceiling' being incorporating into modern language. John Miller reminds us `women-you have to live with us because you can not advance without us.'

4 out of 5 stars Worth a look for the pictures alone........2002-10-24

Rather ironic, really, that the editor of this fine book is a man ~ unless "John Miller" is the nom de guerre of some radical female. Still, editing the book can't have been very hard; Miller had some excellent writers to work with. The selection of the legends is somewhat more questionable. Of the fifty, less then twenty are neither from nor intimately associated with the United States; in the effort to remind people of the ability of the other gender to produce legends, the publishers have largely neglected the largest portion of that gender. And as if that restriction is not enough, the editor has not included anyone for whom a photograph is not available, thus denying any woman from the first 95% of history the opportunity to be a legend. Funnily enough, these censures aside, i really enjoyed this book. Quite unlike the usual "feminist book" (i hate the quotes, but you have to admit they belong there), this is neither strident not shrill, nor even obnoxious. It is beautifully written, nicely put together, with superb selection of wonderful photographs of handsome people. Can't ask for much more than that, eh?

Legends aptly pairs essays with black and white photos to examine the lives of women who have changed the world - as presented by great women writers such as Meg Cohen, Anne Hollander, Patricia McLaughlan and others. Enjoy an inviting collection of contemporary biographical sketches which reveals these women's many contributions to modern society.

I got this for my mum once and it is so good.A different author writes about each of the different famous women in the book in only praising tones and it is really great to look through. Each page is a seperate female, author, article and photograph. Some of the sheilas written about are:Marilyn,Audrey Hepburn(as the cover shows you),Twiggy,Anne Frank and lets not forget Mother Theresa.Or Princess Diana.Madonna does not make it into this book, thank the lord, and thankfully neither do big modern-day stars such as Britney Spaniels..I mean Spears.All-in-all as they say!,a very good book!

Women and the Leadership Q reveals what many men have known all along: successful leaders come in all different shapes and sizes. The key isn't in gender, but learning how to leverage one's own style. To do this, women must accept, both intellectually and emotionally, their innate potential brilliance and blind spots of their own style.

Featuring Leadership Q-a 38-item, self-scoring, gender-neutral test, developed by Shoya Zichy and based upon the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator-women can identify which of the four profile groups best matches their personalities and then go on to explore which of the eight subsets, or specific leadership styles, applies to them. Bringing together a powerhouse team of leading Myers-Briggs test experts, Women and the Leadership Q includes exercises that help readers further refine their styles, build upon their strengths, and minimize their weaknesses. In addition, interviews and profiles of more than forty internationally well-known women illustrate the different groups and their leadership styles. Profiles include: Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Madeleine Albright, Elizabeth Dole, Gloria Steinem, and many others.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting But Wordy.......2005-06-17

The Seven Secrets are thought provoking, but the Brooks sisters take 274 pages to say what could have been said in 100 pages. Also, the chapters veer off topic and spend considerable time discussing unfair treatment of women in the workplace.

4 out of 5 stars A useful book for all working women.......2000-10-04

The first point that is interesting about this book is the acceptance of the differences between the attitudes of men and women regarding their obligations at home and at work. Realising how we have been brought up, in a way that makes networking, taking risks or finding mentors much easier for men, is an important step towards changing our own attitudes that stand on our way to achieving our goals. One more point of interest is that the book addresses women not only in the corporate sector, but its concepts can be easily applied to all areas of emloyment. The book is highly readable, with many examples and success stories. For those of us using vision aids, note that the book's lettering is well thought of, not large print but comfortable, which makes reading less complicated than the usual overcrowded format used in business books.

We will be known forever by the tracks we leave.

The beautiful thing about this book (other than the title), is each little proverb is very short and easy to read. Each message is simply stated and followed by the name of the Native American nation it came from. I found it to be warm, visual and thought provoking in its emphasis of high values, spirituality and natural connections. This is a true gem that should be shared with all family members and friends.

5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful collection of Native American proverbs.......1998-10-28

A thoughtful collection of Native American proverbs that gives pause to consider the meanings of life and important values. We can learn much from these old proverbs. It is interesting how some of them have similar counterparts in other cultures and ethnic groups, including the white man's! For example, "It takes a whole village to raise a child." Where have we heard this recently? Where did it actually originate? Who knows, but there is a similar Native American proverb in this interesting book. Each has the tribe of origin listed below it. A wonderful springboard for discussion and thought, and basis for research on the Internet on Native Americans. Use selected proverbs in my teaching.

This book contains the wisdom of many Native American tribes. Through these reading we find meaning to some of lifes mysteries.

Book Description

Randall Balmer's Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory is an insightful and engaging journey into the world of conservative Christians in America. Originally published fifteen years ago and the basis for an award-winning PBS documentary, this timely new edition arrives just as recent elections have left an ever-growing number of secular Americans wondering exactly how the other half thinks. From Oregon to Florida, and from Texas to North Dakota, Balmer offers an immensely readable tour of the highways and byways of American evangelicalism. We visit a revival meeting in Florida, an Indian reservation in the Dakotas, a trade show for Christian booksellers, and a fundamentalist Bible camp in the Adirondacks. For this fourth edition, Balmer adds two chapters, one on the phenomenally popular "Painter of Light," Thomas Kinkade, and one on Rick Warren, author of The Purpose-Driven Life. Through the eyes of these and other people Balmer meets on his journeys, we arrive at a more accurate and balanced understanding of an abiding tradition that, as the author argues, is both rich in theological insights and mired in contradictions. Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory offers readers a genuine insight into the appeal that the evangelicals movement holds for thousands of Americans.

5 out of 5 stars The History and Diversity of a Major Force in America Today.......2007-06-24

Randall Balmer's widely recognized (in its fourth printing) "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" lives up to its well-earned reputation. In this excellent book, Balmer takes the reader on a tour of US Evangelism with visits to or with:

* The Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana, CA.), the home of Chuck Smith who revolutionized evangelism by reaching out to the "disillusioned of the 1960s
* The Dallas Theological Seminary, a fortress of evangelical and fundamentalist orthodoxy, and Darby's rapture
* Filmmaker Donald Thompson, maker of Christian Films
* The Capstone Cathedral (Phoenix, AZ.), the home of evangelist and healer Neal Frisby
* The Word of Life Fellowship youth camp, home of Adirondack Fundamentalism
* The Church of the King (North Valdosta, GA), a charismatic church that merged with the Episcopal Church, starting a charismatic renewal
* The Multnomah School of the Bible (Oregon) and its doctrine of the end times
* The Right to Life movement in Iowa
* John Perkins, founder of Mendenhall Ministries, who returned to his native Mississippi to break the cycle of poverty, despair, and oppression of blacks
* The Christian Booksellers Association's annual convention (Bibles are a big business)
* Father Innocent Good House, a Sioux Indian, and pastor of St. Luke's Episcopal Church (Fort Yates, ND) on the resistance of evangelicals to the integration of Christianity with the Indian's native religions
* Camp Freedom, an adult faith camp (St. Petersburg, FL.) and the holiness tradition.
* The Billy Graham Crusade in New York City
* The Oregon Extension of Trinity College (Klamath Falls, OR) and the misuse of the Bible by evangelicals
* Jimmy Swaggart, since his fall, at his Family Life Center (Baton Rouge, LA)
* Thomas Kinkade and his world vision
* The purpose driven megachurches - Willow Creek (Chicago) and Saddleback (Lake Forest, CA)

In "My Eyes Have Seen," Balmer conveys the multiplicity, diversity, and complexity of Evangelicalism in the US today highlighting its folk appeal and grass roots character. Evangelicalism is quintessentially American - a free market religion which has churches competing with one another for popular followings, providing a unmistakable populist cast to religion. "Evangelicals generally galvanize around a personality who articulates - and even defines - the faith of his followers according to his own idiosyncratic reading of the Bible.

Balmer feels that Evangelicalism will persist because of its timeless appeal, promising intimacy with God, a support community, an unambiguous morality, and answers to the riddles of eternity.

"My Eyes Have Seen the Glory" is the perfect reference book for those interested in in the history and many faces of American Evangelicalism. It is a not only a "must" for anyone involved in religious ministry, but also for most Americans as Evangelicalism is major force in our society society. It cannot be easily dismissed.

5 out of 5 stars Somewhat Dated Now.......2006-06-01

In this book, Balmer chronicles his journey across America encountering various Christian evangelicals. Each chapter describes a specific encounter such as a Billy Graham crusade, a visit to Jimmy Swaggart's ministry, the artwork of Thomas Kinkade, the Christian Booksellers Association convention, etc.

This book gives interesting perspectives on the evangelical movement, and perhaps allows evangelicals themselves to see how the rest of the world perceives their witness. However, much of the book was written in the 80's and early 90's and so now is somewhat dated, more of a historical retrospective than a description of the current evangelical movement.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but already out-of-date.......2003-07-29

[At the beginning, I must point out that the book I read was the 1989 hardbound edition, and some of what I have to say might not apply to later editions.]

In the 1980s, religious historian Randall Balmer began to look again at the church that he had disgustedly left in the 1970s, the American evangelicals. Traveling across the country, he visited evangelical churches and organizations from Santa Ana, California to Schroon Lake, New York. This book is a compilation of his visits to these various evangelical sites, reporting what he saw and heard, and giving his own piercing analysis.

First of all, any potential reader must know that Professor Balmer began his study of the "strange-and-wacky world of American evangelicalism" with a strong distaste for the object of his study. He left that church in disgust, and his dislike for it is evident throughout this book. That said, though, I found his examination of American evangelicalism to be thorough, and quite interesting. His knowledge of the movement allowed him to give the reader a wonderful understanding of it, and his analysis was quite keen.

But why, then, do I give it a mere 3 stars? The truth is that, as he points out, American evangelicalism is not defined by its hierarchy or liturgy (although I do disagree with the author when he suggests that other Christian sects are not defined by their doctrines (pages 228-229)), and it has gone on to change quite a lot since he looked at it some twenty years ago. In certain ways, this book is already a work of history, looking at the evangelicalism of the 1980s, rather than that of today. But, I must say, that this is quite an interesting book, one that anyone interested in the American evangelical movement would find quite informative.

5 out of 5 stars I liked Mine Eyes.......2000-03-18

This is a great, affirming book. It's really about a spiritual search, and the author does a great job relating the conflicting passions of modern evangelicals (desire for safety, certainty, security, in a rapidly changing and apparently [to them at least] amoral world) and, in the final chapter relates them to the original protestant vision articulated by Luther and others and to his own struggles with the culture. As he points out through interviews "it's really a lover's quarrel," but one with profound implications for day to day religious belief.

4 out of 5 stars Assassins Have Starry Eyes.......2004-06-28

This is a very good book but it is not a Matt Helm book. It does read like one, with typical Hamilton genius for dialogue.

          Book Description

On 1 December 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, a quiet and dignified 42-year-old black seamstress refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. Her arrest led to a 381-day boycott of the city's bus system, led by Martin Luther King, which is now considered the beginning of the American civil rights movement. Rosa Parks' personality and character were an important part of the bus boycott's success. Graceful, reserved and a devout churchgoer, she was also a civil rights activist alongside her daytime job as a seamstress, and she believed in the use of righteous force when necessary. The boycott was an epic event. 50,000 blacks (three-quarters of the city's population) somehow found some other way to get to and from work, week after week. In 1957 she and her husband moved north to Detroit, where she continued to work for civil rights, taking part in most of the great marches of the 1960s, although she found the male chauvinism of these events increasingly unacceptable. She was a great admirer of Martin Luther King, and he of her, and his assassination in 1968 was a bitter blow. After King's death, the movement began to lose its way and Rosa Parks believed that anger and violence were replacing non-violent social protest. In later years she seemed almost a forgotten figure, but in the 1990s this appeared to be changing. In 1999 Time magazine hailed here as one of the hundred most significant individuals of the century, and there were plaudits from the Pope, Nelson Mandela and others. This book about the life and times of a remarkable and inspiring woman is also a brilliant re-creation of mid-century American life.
