Book Description

With help from a genie, young Karl Anders Nilsson travels by day and by night, beyond the stars, to reach Farawayland. There, his father the King, who has been searching for him for nine long years, tells him that his true name is Mio, and lavishes upon him the loving attention he never received from his foster parents back in Stockholm.

But the wonderful reunion with his father the King is interrupted when Mio learns of a prophecy that has been foretold for thousands and thousands of years. With his best friend, Pompoo, and his horse with the golden mane, Miramis, he must travel into the darkness of Outer Land to battle the cruel Sir Kato. First published in Swedish in 1954, Mio, My Son has become a children's classic worldwide.

4 out of 5 stars Charming Fantasy for Young Children.......2007-04-08

As a boy I had studiously avoided Lindgren's more famous creation Pippi Longstocking, partly because it was about a GIRL ("The horror! The horror!"), but also because it struck me at the time as just too silly. "Mio, My Son" is neither, but I had never heard of it before stumbling upon it in the list of chapter books reprinted by Purple House Press, which specializes in reprinting OOP children's classics. Since they had started by reprinting no less than FIVE of my favorite books from my childhood, all long out of print until they came along, I was inclined to trust their judgment sight unseen. "Mio, My Son" at least, did not disappoint.

Perhaps because it began as a short story of Andy and the genie, which Lindgren later expanded into the current novel, "Mio, My Son" starts rather slowly. I know that I began to wonder when "something" was going to "happen" after Mio arrived in Farawayland, but be patient. Lindgren is slowly drawing you into her world, making you care for characters that shortly will be plunged into terrible danger in the rousing climax. The charming illustrations by Ilon Wikland nicely complement the story. After this I am looking forward to reading PHP's other Astrid Lindgren title The Brothers Lionheart with greater interest.

Note: The publisher claims the reading level as 6-12; IMHO it's better classified towards the younger end of that scale, ESPECIALLY for boys. The Purple House reprint of Mio, My Son is worth picking up even if you own an older edition because of the smooth new English translation by Jill Morgan (the publisher herself?).

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites!.......2006-06-12

I had forgotten about this book until someone just asked me to name my favorite book. I read this book again and again as a child and found it absolutely entrancing. I highly recommend it to anyone who dreams of living in a fantasty world of their own.

5 out of 5 stars the stuff dreams are made from.......2006-01-18

I am so happy to find this book in English so that I can share it to my little American friends. In Germany, where I was born in 1983, Astrid Lindgren is a 'must-have' in every children's bookshelf. I grew up with beautiful characters like Mio and Madita, Michel and Ronja. I think the other reviews speak for themselves, I just wanted to add one more thing from self experience:
I think these bed-time fitted books (chapter length chosen for a 15 to 30 min reading session) are what made me dream as fantastic as I still do.
Astrid Lindgren knew the secret of how to catch on to children's interest, and how to pack messages of value in understandable words for them...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story for CHILDREN!!!.......2005-11-18

From E.A. Solinas' review: "It's never really dark or genuinely thrilling..."

Absolutely no offense intended, but try saying that if you're an 8-year-old girl who loves horses and fairy tales! This book has haunted me for years. I checked it out time and time again from my school library, and tried to find it as an adult, but I couldn't remember the title, the main character's name OR the author. All I remembered was ..."a horse called Miramis"... but that was somehow enough to track it down on a lost books site.

I remember the story as being mystical and full of entrancing descriptions. The story of a journey to destiny is timeless, and really captured me back then. I'm just thrilled to have found it again, and can't wait to get another copy.

5 out of 5 stars A delight for your heart!.......2005-01-25

Mio My Son, or Mio Min Mio as I like to call it, is one of the most beautiful books Astrid Lindgren has written. Although this new edition is somewhat confusing to me how they have changed the name of the main character from one Swedish name into another. The original name of Mio is Bo Willhelm Olsson and yet here they chose to name him Karl Anders Nilsson. And his aunt's name is really Edla - not Hulda, and his uncle's name is Sixten - not Olaf. Regardless it's one of the greatest stories ever told, a story filled with love, friendship, loyalty and bravery!

Book Description

The ancient dragons -- of the time of the legendary Saint George and earlier -- have never disappeared entirely. Instead, they've moved undercover -- and into human society. Now one lonely schoolboy is about to learn where the dragons have gone ...

Educated at boarding schools, Simon St. George has never met his parents. When a ragged-looking man shows up claiming to be his father, Simon is skeptical, and when the man kidnaps him, he's indignant to say the least.

Then the man claims to be a descendant of England's Saint George and a career dragon fighter. Why should Simon believe any of this nonsense? But what if the man is telling the truth? What if the dragons know he's out there?

Rich with the dragon lore of legend, the saint of dragons continues and enlarges on the tale of the centuries-old conflict between dragons and humans that rages even today.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for kids.......2005-12-07

I thought this book was ok. I did enjoy it, but I felt that both the plot and the characters needed more depth. HOWEVER-my 9 year old son and my 11 year old daughter both LOVED it. In fact, I only read it because they both recommended it and because they had enjoyed it so much. The book seems to satisfy the age level for which it was written- and isn't that the point?

3 out of 5 stars Tales of the St. Georges.......2005-08-16

Simon St. George lives at a private school. He has no idea who his parents are as they abandoned him when he was very young. But one day two different men come to the school looking for him; a dignified rich man and a bum. One really is his father. Jason is the last of a line of dragonslayers and his parents have tried to keep him hidden, but the modern dragons, capable of passing for men, now know of his existence.

Jason's father, Aldric St. George, has come to enlist the aid of his son to wipe out the last of the dragons. Along the way they meet a woman touched by magic who joins their quest. But Aldric soon learns there are more dragons than he thought and one of them has plans of destruction on a global scale. Father and son must rise to the occasion to stop the dragons' plans.

Written with the idea of a screenplay in mind, much of the action has a Hollywood feel to it what with plenty of explosions and fire. The plot reads like a series of short adventures and nothing seems very hard (including escaping from somewhere no one has ever escaped from). Like Rowling's books, there are plenty of inconsistencies with details only making sense for a specific scene and then being thrown out the window.

This is the first of a series (a slight excerpt from the next volume appears at the end). The poor writing/plotting will probably not put off many readers but I like my books to be consistent. Proper world-building is important in SF&F but seems to be very weak in many new books. Still, this is a fast read with fun, if not actually tense, action and it should appeal to many readers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kid's Book.......2005-04-14

THE HARDBACK REVIEWS ARE GOOD, WHY AREN'T THEY HERE FOR THE SAME BOOK IN PAPERBACK? MAKES NO SENSE. I GOT ONE OF THE PAPERBACKS EARLY AND I THINK ANY KID BETWEEN 9 TO 11 OR 12 WOULD REALLY, REALLY ENJOY IT...SOME PEOPLE DON'T GET THAT IT ISN'T FOR OLDER KIDS.
IT HAS SOME OF THE BEST ACTION SCENE SET-UPS FROM ANY BOOK EVER WRITTEN--EVEN IF IT IS CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. YOUR KIND OF AMAZED THAT IT IS SO IMAGINATIVE AS YOU KEEP READING. YOU CAN HARDLY KEEP YOUR BREATH.
WHILE THIS MAY NOT APPEAL TO SOME, IT WILL KEEP ANY KID READING LIKE A MANIAC. THAT'S ALL.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing fun! Ignore the hecklers.......2005-01-03

I was one of those kept up til late at night polishing off The Knight of Dragons. In contrary to what other reviews have posted, I'd say the characters are nicely developed. Indeed, they are complicated, and they are viewed from Simon's point of view. Simon can not be expected to understand or like his father until much further into the narrative. And, as to the artist falling in love with the knight, well, indeed, love is anything but rational.
As to those who don't find the dragons scary enough, I'm from the school that finds the lurking danger is the worst. And a lot of the dangers are very adult in nature. The book has much to do with trust and betrayal.

If you are reading it solely to pick it apart, I'm sure you'll find a way to dismantle it. But you won't get the point of the book, that "dragons" are all around us, and we have to get past the armor we've put on because of life's disappointments to band together and defeat the vicious and amoral circumstances which surround us.

4 out of 5 stars dragon hunter.......2004-12-27

Simon St Saint George is alone in the world. He has never known his parents and has been left at boarding school for years. His life is uneventful until one day a man claiming to be his father shows up at the school and kidnaps him. His father tells him all about his past and his mother. It turns out that his father is the last remaining dragon hunter and he has come to show Simon the dragon hunter way of life. The rest of the book is all about the adventures that he and his father have while trying to kill all of the dragons in the world.

The book moved at a fast pace. It was a real page turner. Hard to put down.

I would recommend this book to children ages 10-12 who enjoy fantasy type books.

Breaking, bank shots, slices, and safeties—-fifth grader Mickey Vernon can shoot pool better than some guys twice his age. His philosophy is simple: "I think a lot of the world's problems could be solved by a couple of guys shooting a few racks down at the local hall." But sometimes that's hard to remember when he's facing down seventh-grade bully Buck Pender. Buck is determined to beat Mickey in the annual youth tournament down at Vernon's, the pool hall owned and operated by Mickey's grandma Poppy. And he just might do it, too. Except Mickey's got a secret weapon. Joseph Alvarez, a big rig trucker and family friend, has returned to town, and he was coached by the best pool player on the nine-ball professional circuit--Mickey's dad, who died shortly after Mickey was born. So with the help of Joseph and his two best friends, 10-year-old math genius Arlen and magician extraordinaire Francine, Mickey just might have a shot at the championship. Then Buck baits him into playing a game in which Mickey badly sprains his stick hand, just three short weeks before the tournament. Has Mickey just scratched the cue ball of his dreams?

Fun, folksy, and big-hearted, Joan Bauer's first novel for middle-grade readers is sweeter than a 90-degree bank shot off the rail and into the corner pocket. Mickey's unselfconscious and humorous narration ranks with that of Archie in How I Became a Writer and Oggie Learned to Drive by Janet Taylor Lisle or Peter in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. (Ages 9 to 12) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Mickey's family owns the neighborhood pool hall, and he's been playing since before he could talk. Now that he's in fifth grade, he's determined to win the Junior Nine-Ball Championship and cream obnoxious Buck Pender. Problem is, Mickey's ten and Buck's thirteen-and could eat him for a snack. Even with his friend Arlen's help, Mickey doesn't stand a chance. Then Joe Alvarez shows up at the pool hall. He's a fantastic player, and decides to sign on as Mickey's pool coach. But it all depends on one person: Mickey. Can he beat the odds?

"Good characters, humor, and an engaging plot make this a solid piece of middle-grade fiction." (Booklist)

2 out of 5 stars Unrealistic characters.......2007-02-02

Mickey's father was a championship pool player before he died, back when Mickey was a baby. Now that Mickey is eleven, he is determined to follow in his father's footsteps, starting by beating the local bully in the town's big children's pool tournament. When an old friend of his father's walks back into their lives and offers to coach him, Mickey is thrilled. His mother, though, isn't quite so enthusiastic.

The story is decent, although a bit cliche. It is obvious what will happen with all of the conflicts; there isn't a whole lot of tension. I didn't really like any of the characters in this story. I thought Mickey was really whiny, and he and his friend acted much younger than fifth grade. It seemed they were always screaming something, and I found that irritating.

4 out of 5 stars A Pool Story.......2006-06-05

Sticks isn't about pool sticks. This realistic fiction story explains about the ten-year old boy Mickey Vernon who is talented and wants to follow in his father's footsteps. It will take true confidence, "ganas". You will enjoy reading about friendship, courage to believe in yourself, and to never give up hope. Sticks explains a way to solve problems and learn about it. Mickey's biggest goal was to beat 13 year old bully Buck Pender and win the pool hall tournament. With his friends Arlen, Francine, and even Arlen's pet pgi Mangler helping, he is sure to succeed. With three problems between them all, they're going to find someway to solve their troubles and learn valuable lessons. Mickey has to learn pool from the only person he has left, his father's best friend Joseph Alvarez. Unfortunately, Mickey's mother has her concerns about this. Will Mickey win the tournament and once and for all will Buck stop bullying him?? Read this special pool story and find-out. If you lvoe any games, or sports, you'll love Sticks.

4 out of 5 stars It's alright...........2005-02-24

A story of a boy who tries to live in the shadow of his dead father. The main character lives with his mother as he tries to figure out who he is. His best friend is a whiz at math and helps him to learn and understand the angles of pool. An old friend of the boy's deceased father comes back into the picutre, much to the dismay of the main character's mother. Toward the end of the book the boy enters a local pool tournament and has to go up against some stiff competition. The book's end is so predictable that its like walking outside to see clouds in the sky. Still a fairly good read with a handful of boring sections. Get through the boring parts for a good book.

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't read this book, READ IT!.......2004-03-03

For a person who likes to play pool, this is a good book to read. If you dont really like to play pool, this is still an incredible book. This book is by a fantastic author and she wrote this book like she was the main character. When I read this book I didnt really like to play pool but when I was reading this book I could veiw all the book and when they were playing pool in the book it seemed like I was one of the fans watching the game. It is kind of sad when it talks about the kids dad dieing but when his best friend comes and teaches him like his dad taught his friend it cheered the boy up and he got really good at the sport pool and started to win alot more games and their is this one boy who the boy hated he might of beat but your going to have to read the book to find out what happens to the boy and other awesome events. I will have to stop writing now or I'm going to spoil the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars Mickey's Pool Hall.......2002-04-26

Hey! People if you want an exciting and extraordinarily funny, but realistic fiction story by the great author named Joan Bauer, I recommend the book Sticks. The 2 boys in the book are the main characters. Mickey Vernon is 10 has freckles, blisters on his finger sand Arlen Pepper has glasses, carries his calculator, and a protractor that why everyone called him the math wiz. He is very intelligent with any kind of math and science. Ever day Vernon always got beaten the big fat bully named Buck Pender.

Once in the pool hall of Cruckston, New Jersey [Where Mickey's family lived] when Mickey was young, he wanted to be the pool best player like his dad who had died. Arlen and Mickey are searching for secrets of pool. One day Vernon `s grandmother Poppy stuck up a poster that said," 10 to 13 Year Old Pool Tournament". Absolutely. Mickey was going to join, but he'll have to be much better in pool because Buck is joining, too. Days went by, but something strange happened at the pool hall. When Mickey is practicing pool a man with reddish beard came to Mickey and tells him that Mickey will win the tournament. The next morning day when Arlen and Mickey are walking Buck and his ugly friends came to block Mickey and Arlen from walking. The man from the pool hall came with his green truck and scared the bully off. One day that man came to the pool hall and talk to Ruthie [Mickey's Mother]. Mickey and his sister Camille were watching them as they talk. Then Ruthie introduce the man to Mickey and Camille who his name is Joseph Alveraz one of Mickey's dad best friends. Mickey rushed to him and asked him if he can teach him pool? He said, "Yes". Ruthie sigh and said, "Okay". They both together play Ping Pong and archery to make Mickey focus. Days went by until something bad happened. Joseph has to go to someplace away from New Jersey, before leaving he said not to play a single match with Buck. What do you know? Mickey didn't obeyed Joseph's command. He played a game with Buck and loses and other bad news Mickey broke his left arm because Buck slammed him on the floor. The doctor said it will cure in 3 weeks and real bad news that the day that the tournament is starting. Will our Mickey Vernon be able to practice only for a week to win the tournament? If you want to know, go ahead buy the book Sticks by Joan Bauer and you'll not be bored ever.

4 out of 5 stars so sweet.......2007-07-30

A light, fun, gentle romantic read. I couldn't put it down, and the characters were very engaging. All SHerman's books are so much fun. I also recommend The SIlver Falcon.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe its out of print!.......2000-09-02

I thoroughly agree with the other reviewers. I love this book and have reread it so many times that I need a new copy! I find it hard to believe that, with so much rubbish around, this book is out of print! It was not based on any fairytale that I am familiar with - and isn't about two brothers in love with the same woman. . .rather it is a story in which Ms Sherman weaves the powers - and obligations - of a magician into a wonderful mixture of love, sorcery (black and white) and good triumphing over evil. Aidan, the son of a (good) witch and a king finds he has a brother and promises his dying mother that he will help his brother, the king. He does so despite the fact that he would rather stay with his true love, an elven lady in a land which bears a strong resemblance to a pagan Wales. He faces the suspicion of his brother's courtiers and new wife and the emnity of a neighboring king who dabbles in black sorcery and has a pact with demons. This king captures him and he gets free only with the help of one of the Fair Folk for whom he has done a favor. When he gets back he finds he is being blamed for the death of his brother's wife. Once he gets over the illness engendered by his imprisonment he finds a perfect match for his brother AND defeats the wicked king and his dark allies. Splendid stuff! Definitely read it if you liked her "Shattered Oath" and Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar and fairy tale series !

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Josepha Sherman book.......2000-05-24

Josepha Sherman writes a lot of books about elves, both in urban settings and in more traditional settings. Out of all her books (the ones about magic and elves anyway), this is my favorite. "King's Son Magic's Son" is about Aidan, a human magician raised in the forest by his witch mother. Magic is second nature to him and he even falls in love with an Elven maiden. When his mother dies she makes him promise to get to know his half brother, who happens to be the king of the neighboring country. Reluctantly, Aidan leaves the forest and his lady to find his brother.

The reason I gave this book a five was because I can go back and read this book again and again. Aidan's arrival into a court full of "civilized" courtiers that are both suspicious of the King's bastard brother and of magic in general is both funny and exciting. The characters, though represent the usual fare in fantasy, have a certain depth. The main characters are especially unique. Aidan is torn between wanting to help Estemere, his wary brother, and going home to his lady. Estemere wants to trust his bastard brother, but is cautious of his position and politics.

This is the type of book that isn't too in depth or long, but is satisfying and a pleasure to read. I highly recomment it and if you can find it, read it quick!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting re-telling of an old ballad.......1999-06-21

King's Son, Magic's Son is the perfect book to read when you want to remind yourself why you started to read fantasy in the first place. This is high fantasy with one major difference-- it's done well.

While it might sound rather cliched with its many Faerie Folk, magicians and sorcerers, Josepha Sherman brings them all vividly to life. It's classic fantasy, done with high adventure and a romantic air.

To sum it up in one word-- EXCELLENT! If you're a fantasy fan of any sort, King's Son, Magic's Son is a refreshing change from some of the trash that gets published.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful.......1999-02-28

This has got to be one of the most enjoyable fantasy books I have ever read. Usually, I don't like books that are set on 'this' earth because they are too realistic. This book, however, manages to combine faeries, fantasies, kings, and princesses without getting dull. Aidan is a very likeable character, and I sympathized with him through his trials. This book has just the right pace, and doesn't need a sequel (although that would be enjoyable) to tie up the loose ends. A classic tale tale of bot meets girl, boy finds out he is a prince, boy helps brother (the king), and boy saves everyone.

    Product Description

Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities. But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player.Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jeffersons string-snapping fill-ins provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestines stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy. This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Adkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel. This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs. Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-to intermediate guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.

        Product Description

This superb Red Dog Music Book and CD allows you to learn/play slide guitar fill-ins while sitting in with a crisply recorded blues band and singer. The licks are clearly written in standard notation and tablature, and the companion CD contains all 101 licks, which are applicable to countless blues songs. A guide to symbols and several helpful fretboard diagrams are included. The licks are recorded on electric guitar but can also be played on acoustic. Overall, a very fine book that will provide unlimited learning and enjoyment. Many slide guitar books are confusing because they try to cover too many tunings. Everything here is in open E. Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sportin Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, along with several new songs written to standard blues changes. Like Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutton, and Elmore James? Then you will like this book.
