Lot's of how to, not a lot of why to?.......2002-09-03
I ordered this book because it was all I could find on P3. I had recently converted my project from MSPROJECT to Primavera P3. I could figure out how to do things such as entering activity codes and resource profiles but was having trouble figuring out how they were interpretted by the software. This book did little to answer my questions on project structure and why to input data into certain fields and omitt it from others.
I will say that if I'd have had the time to follow through the entire workbook, which is what it felt like to me, a lab workbook, and developed a project using the examples from scratch I may have been more enlightened and may have been able to establish the relational ties I was looking for from experience. However I didn't and as a reference book it was bulky and tedious in it's delivery of the facts.
I have since acquired a book put out by Primevera, Scheduling with Primavera and Primavera P3 Reference Manual, that were much more readable and helpful in developing a project with P3 and explained the why's as well as the how's of the software.
Fastest way to become productive with P3.......2002-04-13
This book cuts through the voluminous, daunting documentation that ships with P3 and gets you quickly started in harnessing the power of this full-featured PM application. If you've used P3 you'll understand the steep learning curve. If you're seeking a book because your company is implementing P3 you'll appreciate the value of this book.
The approach taken by the author is to step you through the common tasks of planning, scheduling and controlling a project, using an example project. The value of this approach is you focus on the important features and functions, instead of getting lost in the myriad of other features that you may or may not use. The book is designed to get you started with P3, not make you a P3 wizard, so this approach boils it down to the essentials. What makes the book effective is the copious use of screen shots from the program, which serve as landmarks, and the way the author conversationally discusses the finer points of project management in general while teaching you how to use P3. For example, in Chapter 9 where you'll be walked through adding logic to activities, you'll not only be shown how to perform this task, but given reasons why you should use one approach from among four possibilities to establish relationships. In this example the choices are start-to-start, finish-to-start, start-to-finish and finish-to-finish. This is but one example in which project management techniques are imparted with P3-specific procedures, and it adds value to the book.
What I most like about this book is the way the author sticks to the basics, uses exercises called workshops, and resists the urge to get fancy and confuse the reader. In this respect, what he wisely leaves out of the book is as important as what is included. The tutorial approach makes this book ideal as a personal learning tool, and the structure and use of workshops makes this book useful as a training guide for companies that intend to conduct in-house training. Another point is the project management techniques that the authors shares are consistent with both the PMI PMBOK and the UK PRINCE2 methodologies, further adding to the book's value. If you are using P3 this book is the quickest way to become productive.
Very good, well written, easy to follow........2001-11-18
I could not find anything else on P3 in the bookstores. I was thrilled to discover this one on Amazon.com. Even happier that I brought this book back in July. I have been using it as a reference ever since. Paul Harris has written an easy to read and follow guide to P3.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone that wants to master P3V3.
Enlightening.......2001-08-23
I used this book to re-aquiant me with p3; unbelievable. The approach is EXACTLY what you need - wrote by a user, not a techy. It expains in plain Elgish good practices to schedule appraoch and development; multidisciplinary concepts universal to Oil / Gas / Construction / Civils.
An absolute must have - ideal for the uni student to beyond...
Learn P3 Step by Step.......2001-06-18
Approximately 300 pages of instruction on how best to set up and configure P3. As an experienced user of P3, I found the many tips on "pitfalls to avoid" and "best practice" very useful. It is a step by step guide including some 24 workshops that ensured I had understood the material before moving onto the next topic. User access to the software is essential for these workshops. I liked the "New features in Version 3.0" chapter, as it consolidated all that is new into a single handy reference.
Comprehensive, accurate and informative. Great value.

Project Planning & Scheduling Using P3e/c by Paul E. Harris.......2007-02-13
I have had classroom Primavara clases back in the 90's when it was DOS-based, and refresher classes in 2006 The presentation by Mr. Harris in his book is very good. Classroom depends on the instructor teaching as much as he/she can in the two and three day courses, with the class book being just a guide. The speed of the class depends on those attending. Some learn faster, some slower. Using Mr. Harris' book you can learn at your own pace. I recommend you do both. There is no substitue for having an instructor to ask questions. Read Mr. Harris' book then sign up with a class in your location. The classroom study plus this book should give you a good understanding of Primavera Enterprise. Keep the book handy for quick reference. If you don't use P3e regularily, you forget things and this book provides refresher information

A 'must have' book!.......2000-03-16
I fully recommend this book for any new user of P3. I considered it as a "must have" title.
Not so hot.......2000-01-21
This book and the reviews I had read about it made it sound like a stand-alone guide to Project Planner. I found it to be inconsistent in its presentation, ranging anywhere from speaking to a infant in the computer world to assuming I already knew what I was doing. The detail in it's instruction was just not what it appeared to be, and that hurt my overall rating of the book. If you have the book right next to you and you've already gone through the tutorial, then you've got a fighting chance to get through this book without wasting your money or your time.
Excellent!.......1999-01-28
This book provides an overview of the scheduling process first. Then, the author starts to tie P3 into puzzle. The end result is that you have resource that you can read from start to finish, and also use it as a reference once you have finished reading the book. The author also touches on many of the advanced capabilities of P3. I am somewhat biased toward this book. The author is the one who actually taught me how to use P3 while developing this book. He teaches a class on scheduling at Texas A&M University. I am currently recommending my coworkers who are involved in scheduling to read this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone involved in scheduling with P3 or Suretrak. We have had great success with teaching our project managers how to use P3 using this book. The first part of the book is usefull for project managers who are not involved in P3 "hands-on", but who are involved in projects that use P3. It helps the project managers understand the scheduling process. It also helps the project scheduler because the project manager is providing better feedback.

Save your money........2004-05-04
Am 100% pissed about losing $100 buying this piece of crap. Everyone familiar with Primavera knows that Primavera has written an excellent program P3 e/c especially for construction. I assumed Marchman knew this as well. After reading Chapter 4 (the first 80 pages being on general scheduling concepts for virgins), I tried to set up his sample project on a copy of the P3 e/c software. NO WAY. Far too much stuff was left out of the book such that it was 100% worthless. Very possible it may work on P3 e. However, as Primavera has had the P3 e/c out for quite some time, and construction companies are widely using P3 e/c -- why bother? Note that one other review rates this book as "terrible". If you read closely the remaining reviews, as of May 5, 2004, you will find they are actually for Marchman's Primavera P3 book, and are incorrectly placed here.

Terrible Book.......2003-05-16
Where do I begin? I can't write up every problem with this book, but just highlight a few of the downfalls. The first 80 pages can be dumped as they relate to what scheduling is all about and how to develop schedules. This info can be found in any book on scheduling or even Marchman's other Primavera book. He completely avoids the heart of what Primavera Enterprise is all about: THE ENTERPRISE STRUCTURE!!! This is the meat and potatoes to this new version of Primavera and if you do not have an understanding of how the EPS, OBS and WBS work and interact, you will be at a major loss here. When he finally gets to use the program in Chapter 4!, he fails to explain how to utilize the "Open Global Data button. This is a key element for controlling the Enterprise Structure of the program. He waits until the end of the chapter before he gets into Administrative Preferences, which should be at the begining. The chapters on Cost and Resources are very limited, as Enterprise takes on new areas of cost control for a project, that Primavera 3.1 doesn't. There is no mention about change order control, a major area that Primavera has incorporated into this program. He walks you through the printing of schedules, but fails to preface the chapter that Enterprise has numerous printing issues that have yet to be resolved by Primavera. He doesn't discuss anything about project codes; doesn't go into details about setting up a cost accout structure; makes no mention about timesheets usage; doesn't touch on the fact that you can links excel and word to activities; doesn't discuss the notebook feature; doesn't talk about Primavision, etc. I was looking foa an additional reference manual to complement the Primavera manual. This book is useless. ...
Good P3 guide, but little practical "construction" value.......2000-01-27
The text provides a very thorough reference to using the P3 program. Many P3 program features and capabilities are described in detail (resource loading, cost loading, graphs and options, updating) and thus the book is a good supplement to that provided in Primavera's documentation.
... but that's it. Upon review the reader finds that the book serves well as an expanded reference or user guide for P3, but it does not provide much practical guidance on "Construction Scheduling". For example, how do I use P3 to handle these situations; how to handle vendor procurement delays, approval requirements (shop drawings) and how to establish predecessor milestones to trigger approvals or resubmittals, multiple calendars to handle weather or weather-independent activity, resource allocation in the real-world (T&M work, equipment rental rates, etc..), practical use of earned value for variance analysis and mgmt control, preparation and maintenance of "as-planned" and "as-built" schedules, etc.... Many of these items would be more relevant with regard to "Construction Scheduling" and should be included in a book titled this way. Good P3 reference, but don't expect this to help you manage or learn any new tricks for applying P3 to construction jobs. Drop the words "Construction Scheduling" from the title, and consider this a P3 how-to book.

Customer Reviews:
Makes an incredible program more incredible.......2002-04-26
When I reviewed the SureTrak program here last may I considered myself to be an experienced used who fully understood the features of that powerful PM application. After reading this book I found out that I was only using a fraction of the features that are built into SureTrak. For example, while I knew that it supported multiple calendars. This feature gives you absolute control and is especially useful when you're using subcontractors or multi-national resources. Until I was stepped through it by the book's lessons I didn't know how to fully exploit its power.
It was the same for reports. SureTrak includes reports for every conceivable management style and project type. The problem is there are so many that it's difficult to select the ones best suited to each project's unique requirements or your PM standards. This book clearly explained the reports and clearly explained how to create custom reports in the unlikely event that what you need isn't already included. I also learned a lot from the lessons on resource management, as well as the author's tips for project management in general.
If you're using SureTrak you should get this book because it's a safe bet that you're not using everything it has to offer for planning, scheduling and control - and this book will reveal them.
Fast start to using the power of SureTrak.......2002-04-17
Although SureTrak Project Manager 3.0 ships with adequate documentation and the program is intuitive, there are three good reasons to buy this book:
1. The product documentation covers every feature - the information about planning and managing projects using this powerful tool is scattered throughout, making it difficult to tap into SureTrak's power without wading through an overwhelming amount of nice-to-know, but non-essential detail.
2. Although anyone who has used Microsoft's ubiquitous MS Project will have no problem getting started with SureTrak, they will miss the true project management features of SureTrak that are not present (or don't correctly work) in MS Project. This book identifies those features and shows how to use them effectively.
3. The author goes beyond merely describing how to use SureTrak by showing you how to use effective project management techniques, many of which take years of managing projects to discover.
The book is structured as a series of 20 lessons (called workshops) that are designed to step you through setting up a project, and planning and scheduling it. If you follow them in sequence you will be able to not only set up a project using SureTrak's rich feature set, but will also pick up general project management techniques along the way. An example of one such technique is how the author classifies projects into four levels for planning and controlling. These levels are based on project complexity, with Level 1 being the simplest and suitable for short projects, to Level 4 for complex, high-value projects. You are given the planning and tracking criteria for each project type, which allows you to tailor your approach as well as ensure that you don't over-manage simple projects or under-manage the complex ones.
You are also shown how to use the more powerful features, such as the many project views (work breakdown structure, activity or resource), managing the sophisticated calendaring functions, and effectively using the resource profiles and reporting features. I particularly like the way earned value is treated. The author shows how to use SureTrak's facilities for managing to earned value, as well as explaining this essential technique (which, by the way, is now a part of the Project Management Institute's PMBOK 2000 version). Another bonus is the way scheduling is explained by walking through adding logic to activities. You'll not only be shown how to perform this task, but given reasons why you should use one approach from among four possibilities to establish relationships. In this example the choices are start-to-start, finish-to-start, start-to-finish and finish-to-finish.
This book is clear, concise and heavily illustrated with screenshots from SureTrak. The tutorial style and the way the lessons are sequenced will get you quickly up-to-speed with SureTrak and give you the knowledge and skills necessary to employ it with minimum reference to the manuals that come with the software.
Planning Using Primavera SureTrak Project Manager Version 3........2001-06-19
Planning Using Primavera SureTrak Project Manager Version 3 is a Training Manual introducing the features of the Suretrak Version 3.0 Software which is used for Planning and Controlling Projects. The Technical Services Group at John Holland has been using SureTrak since its introduction by Primavera. I personally use Paul Harris' manual in the delivery of training courses in SureTrak. At John Holland we conduct SureTrak training over a two day period, and within this time limitation I have found the manual provides comprehensive detail on the features of SureTrak and is easy to follow. As it is considered to be an excellent guide in respect of the use of the software, at the end of the training course attendees receive a manual for reference and as a 'memory jogger' when they start to use the software. The manual is divided into sections with a 'workshop' at the end of each section providing the ability to practice the points covered. Useful tips, for both experienced and new users are provided throughout the manual and are indicated with an 'i'. This is a manual that the user will turn to again and again. Particularly for new users of the Software, but even for experienced users who are trying to solve a particulasr problem it is a good guide into the features of SureTrak. This manual fills a slot in the market as an easy to follow guide in the use of the SureTrak Version 3.0 software, and I would recommend it to those wishing to learn how to use SureTrak or refresh their skills.
Learning to use Suretrak V3.0.......2001-06-18
Approximately 200 pages presented as a comprehensive step by step guide to setting up and getting the most out of Suretrak. I found many helpful tips that are not in the Suretrak's help files or manuals. A chapter is also devoted to the new features in Suretrak Version 3.0 and this allowed me, as an existing Suretrak user, to hone in on the new features. In all, 21 workshops re-enforced the material as its presented and made me reflect on the content. Readers will need access to the Suretrak software (the demo version will do) to get the most from this book.

It has a chapter dedicated to the new functions available in Version 3.1 and covers some of the more advanced features of the software such as resource levelling and Project Groups. It draws on the author's practical experience in using the software in a wide variety of industries. It includes exercises, a large number of screen dumps, numerous tips and an index.

Planning Using Primavera Project Planner P3, Version 3.1, Revised 2004 Edition, Including Updated Workshops.......2007-01-10
I am a beginner to Primavera. I purchased this book, hoping to learn, but this book was of no use. The Exercises/workshops do not give STEP BY STEP instruction to complete. I also downloaded the COMPLETED WORKSHOPS from EC HARRIS web site, but the excercise in the book doesn't mention the corresponding file name.
Finally, I do not recommend this book for BEGINNERS

"Spring is here. / The snow melts. / The earth is fresh. / The grass sprouts." Taro Gomi's picture book about the change of seasons couldn't be simpler. The first spread shows a white calf against a hot-pink background. "Spring is here," it says. In the next spread "the snow melts." And indeed, the once snow-white calf is now spotted black and white! Gomi walks toddlers through harvest, more snowfall, and comes full-circle back to spring, only this time "the calf has grown." Publishers Weekly calls Spring Is Here "the perfect picture book," and now, in its latest ultra-sturdy board-book incarnation, it may last a few more seasons! (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson

Customer Reviews:
simple eloquence.......2005-12-06
I bought this book just for it's large print and short sentences. (ez reader). despite these two 'requisites', this is not just a baby book!
If you want to introduce your child to the 'flow' of eloquent vocabulary, this book should do it!
It is NOT a dumbed-down baby book. It is much more fun for me, as a parent, to read than any other baby book that I have met so far!
I can see why the baby's (in other reviews) prefer it!!
My six year old (learning to read) loves it, too.
My 1-Year Old Loves It!.......2003-08-11
My 1-year old son LOVES this book. It's been one of his favorites since he first saw it. He wants to read it over and over, which helps to pass the time on car trips. He always laughs when the cow re-appears toward the end. Not many books hold his interest as much or get him as excited as this one!
Spring Is Here.......2001-10-30
My daughter loves this book. It goes with us, everywhere. She has memorized it at 2 years old. "the storms rage" has always been something I can dramatize when reading it. Now, she has her own way of emphasizing it. LOVE IT!
a tour of the four seasons.......2001-08-23
the simple words and bold pictures lead babies and toddlers on a fun trip through the four seasons. this book helps children to use their imaginations to discover their environments.
Beautiful... Visually mesmerizing for both baby and parents.......1999-07-28
This has been our baby's favorite book since she was eight months old (she's now eleven months). We had tried lots of other picture books, but she would turn away from them after only a few pages at story time. But, this one really "clicked" with her. I was heartened to see how the pages held her interest. The images are simple, elegant and happy. Like the seasons, which is the story's theme, the pictures transition from one to another magically. It is like watching a slow motion animation. This helps immensely the development of a baby's cognitive ability. We add special effects to the reading, such as blowing wind when reading "the wind blows". It helps our baby to understand the story even better. As a parent, I consider "Spring is Here" one of the best books around for babies. As a designer/artist, I consider it a work of art.
