Mom of 10 year old autistic boy.......2002-04-12
As the mother of an autistic son, we have had a great deal of difficulty in getting him to enjoy reading. He doesn't understand a great many words, but has a few "subjects" he really enjoys. Star Wars,Episode 1 is one of them. This book has been a real find that he loves! I am getting more of them, as they don't "talk down" to kids, really explain the movie in detail, and help kids understand many things (in life, as well as the movie!) better. We are really looking forward to the next Star Wars movie this summer- as well as the books that will follow it!
Wonderful adventure story!.......2002-01-02
DANGERS OF THE CORE takes a section of the movie 'Phantom Menace' and, step by step, breaks down the action that flies by so quickly on the big screen. This makes it easy for children to follow. The excitement starts with the first sentence and never lets up!
The illustrations are expressive and dramatic; nicely done.
DANGERS teaches children to respect all living beings. Qui-Gon Jinn is the epitome of patience (especially with Jar Jar!), and remains calm, steady and in control even in the midst of danger. Excellent life lessons for children!
Another plus: The story doesn't 'talk down' to children. It assumes an appropriate level of maturity and intelligence.
I'd take off half a star because Jar Jar's speech is impossible for some children to understand when reading the book on their own.
Nevertheless, all the children to whom I read DANGERS OF THE CORE just loved it! And with such a variety of characters and emotions, it's fun to read out loud, too.
Highly recommended for children as well as old fogeys who are young at heart!
Getting Boys Excited about Reading.......2000-04-19
"Dangers of the Core" is a great beginning reader, especially for a boy. The book carefully summarizes the underwater chase from the Episode 1 movie into easy-to-read language that captures a boy's attention. I have had trouble finding interesting early readers that my son will read; but when we found this book, he would not put it down. He read it TWICE in the first day--without prompting! Thank you for sparking his interest in reading!

Star in Danger.......2001-12-28
When Ashleigh's Wonder died just days after giving birth to her last foal Christina's mother, Ashleigh, couldn't even bear to look at the orphaned colt. Christina had to bottle-feed him around the clock. That was when she named him Wonder's Star because of the white, heart-shaped star in the middle of his forehead. After adventures with a mischeivous goat, giving Star an 'identity problem' Christina and her father had to start all over to overcome the tiny foal's fear of other horses. And when Star was at last in the paddock with the other promising weanlings Christina hears Ashleigh eagerly closing a deal with Clay Townsend and his son Brad, half-owners of Star. Wonder's Star was being sent to Townsend Acres.
Christina has to say "good-bye" to her dreams of making Star her eventing horse and riding him in the olympics. There is no question about Star's future now--Brad is already training him to race. At first Christina had to admit that the yearling was getting good enough care at Townsend Acres. Before his 'training' begins. When Christina starts having trouble on cross-country with her mare, Sterling Dream, she makes the decision not to visit Star anymore. Maybe then she could concentrate on her dreams for the olympics...with STERLING. But when she and her cousin, Melanie, finally return to Townsend Acres Star has changed. He isn't groomed as often because everyone in the stable thinks he is vicious and agressive. Even Ashleigh remarks coldly that Star is becoming like Terminator, one of Whitebrook's stallions. Christina wants to regain Star's trust, and that means she has to be able to work with him. When Christina gets the opportunity to groom for Brad she knows she has to do anything for Star. But at the same time she is having trouble with her boyfriend, Parker. She always thought of them as just FRIENDS. Now she is afraid that they're becoming much more than that. She has to forget about everything for her event at Meadowlark. But then she gets the news that the head trainer is going to teach Star to carry a person on his back--TODAY. Christina knows Star isn't ready. But how can she convince anyone to see her side? Christina is positive that it's time to get Star HOME--at Whitebrook. Whether her parents like it or not!

Relative Danger by June Shaw.......2007-08-01
I had to take a hiatus from reading novels for a while, but I am back! I'm here to say that Relative Danger was a great book to start my reading comeback! What a page turner! As an international traveler, a doting grandmother and an independent, active baby boomer, I could identify with Cealie. I highly recommend this great book for everyone who enjoys romantic murder mysteries, but especially all of you baby boomers! I had a very difficult time putting this book down.
Great Read!.......2007-07-22
Relative Danger by June Shaw (Thomson - Gale 2006) is a mystery written from the perspective of a baby boomer. It is the first adventure for Cealie, a sexy grandmother, who is out to "find herself". She stumbles on a mysterious death at her granddaughter's (Kat) high school while in town for Kat's graduation.
Relative Danger is an easy and fun read. Although it's a mystery, Relative Danger is laced with humor and insight into the aging of woman who was recently widowed and coping well.
The reader will relate to and love the characters, from Cealie's single parent, somewhat depressed son, Roger to perky but honor student granddaughter, Kat. And then there is Gil, Cealie's sometimes boy friend, and my favorite, "Chicken Boy".
Cealie becomes a snoop when Kat avoids school just before graduation because of the suspected murder of the school's janitor. Cealie was determined to see Kat graduate based on son Roger's deceased wife's wish that her daughter graduate.
There are unexpected twists and turns in the plot that will keep the reader in suspense until Cealie finally solves mystery.
Relative Danger is a great launch for what could be a series for Granny turned private eye Cealie. However, as a male, sometimes I found that I was given too much information about some of Cealie's female "problems".
Ironically, this look into how a widowed Baby Boomer overcomes aging problems may make Relative Danger a surprise best seller.
I highly recommend Relative Danger. It just may be a book that will make rainy summer vacation days a little sunnier.
A Wonderful book and a great read.......2007-03-09
Cealie Gunther is a super sleuthing amateur homicide detective but not by choice. Her granddaughter, Kat, is scheduled to graduate from high school soon but the murder of a janitor at her school and the implication of her favorite teacher has her staying home from school with no desire to graduate. Cealie made a deathbed promise to Kat's mother to always be there taking her place when Kat graduates, gets married, has babies and other memorable events in life.
That deathbed promise causes Cealie to seek a position of substitute teacher at the high school Kat attends so she can secretly investigate the murder and get Kat's favorite teacher off the hook so Kat will go back to school and graduate.
June Shaw has created interesting and realistic characters in Relative Danger. The suspense begins to mount right from the beginning of the story and each chapter ends in a cliff hanger, which made it impossible for me to put the book down. Ms. Shaw's well written and structured book coerced me into reading her book to find out what was going to happen next. The number of suspects increases as Cealie gathers new facts and when the culprit is finally caught, I was completely surprised. I never would have guessed.
Relative Danger is a wonderful cozy mystery and will keep you entertained throughout the story. When it ended, I was sorry that there was no more to read. However, the story ends with Cealie receiving a mysterious email from her cousin Stevie that begins with HELP!!! So, it looks like the murders, suspense, intrigue, and cliff hangers may not be too far away. I can't wait.
I highly recommend this book. You won't regret reading it.
Great new mystery series.......2007-01-04
Caelie Gunther arrives in town a few days before her granddaughter Kat's graduation only to find out Kat may not graduate at all. Caelie made a deathbed promise to Kat's mother that she would see Kat graduate, so she is determined to make Kat graduate.
Kat explains that a school janitor was killed. Her favorite teacher is no longer speaking to her so she has no interest in going to school. Caelie signs up to be a substitute teacher at the high school to get Kat back in classes.
In the school Caelie encounters some rude students and there are some mysterious incidents as well as more violence. Can she find the killer in time for Kat to complete her final exams and graduate? Will the fact that her ex-lover Gil Thurman is in town at his new restaurant sidetrack her plans?
I enjoyed Caelie. She is a great senior sleuth. She is a lot of fun and cares about her family but doesn't want to be tied down to them or them to her. Apparently she moves around a lot. She doesn't want to get tied down in a relationship either. This makes her a very interesting character and also very three-dimensional in my eyes.
The sparks always fly when she's with Gil. There is a lot of mystery as to what might develop between them. I hope that eventually something does.
I like the way Caelie interacts with her granddaughter and son as well.
I highly recommend this book.
Sassy amateur detective will entertain you.......2006-12-30
Cealie Gunther visits her widowed son and granddaughter Kat, for her high school graduation--only to find that Kat has stopped attending school. And, her favorite teacher is a suspect in the death of a school janitor.
Cealie decides to take it upon herself to get the girl to go back to school, and if that means she has to solve a murder, so be it. She takes a job as a substitute teacher to gain entry to the school and snoop around.
Cealie's ex-lover, Gil, is also in town opening a new venue in his chain of Cajun restaurants. Cealie had broken off their relationship when she felt a need to find her own independence. She has spent the time since traveling and rediscovering herself. However, she finds herself unable to stay away from him even when she spies his new woman.
Cealie manages to cause all kinds of trouble for everyone as she sticks her nose in the murder investigation and attempts to get her family back on track.
I liked Cealie a lot. She is feisty, determined, and lovable. She has a cactus plant as a pet. Shaw does a good job of showing that grandmas can be sexy too.
Armchair Interviews says: Sexy grandmas, hmmmm.

60s SF that stands the test of time very well.......2007-04-04
Sixteen-year-old Larry Montray is thrilled when his father accepts an assignment in the Terran trade enclave on a far away world called Darkover. Settled by human castaways so long ago that it now has a culture drastically unlike that of Terra, Darkover fascinates Larry. Despite restrictions on contact between the Terran visitors and Darkover's natives, he manages to form a friendship with Kennard Alton, a Darkovan of his own age who's reckoned a grown man instead of a boy. When the noble Alton family invites Larry for an extended visit at their remote estate, his father's superiors are delighted at the opportunity to learn more about these people and their fiercely individualistic society. Larry's father, although far from delighted, allows the visit. He, too, sees its value; and he has another reason that neither we nor Larry will learn until the book's very end.
This old-fashioned science fiction adventure stands the test of time (original publication date: 1965) very well indeed. Its theme - how coming of age requires societies, as well as individuals, to temper freedom with self-control - is one that will have meaning as long as humans remain, well, HUMAN. I didn't think until after I'd finished the book about its almost complete absence of female characters, and then - since I'm familiar with Bradley's ability to write fully realized women, from her later works- I guessed that she chose not to bother depicting them in the stereotyped fashion that was usual in 60s SF. What's really interesting is that I didn't pick up on their absence at all while the story had me in its grip.
another story of culture clash.......2004-07-31
In "Star of Danger" we get to see one of the earlier works of Marion Zimmer Bradley. First published in 1965, it was the fourth Darkover novel written. The reason this is worth mentioning is that even thought it was only the fourth novel published in the series, it is the twelfth novel in chronological order, and if the "Clingfire Trilogy" is counted (which was mostly written by Deborah J Ross in the years after Bradley died), "Star of Danger" is the fifteenth novel in chronological order. It is in this order that I am experiencing the world of Darkover, from the earliest era of the planet through to the novels that take place deeper in the chronology. Bradley had not yet developed many of the ideas that would encompass the world of Darkover and she had not yet begun to truly tie these novels together. One theme that does remain strong throughout the entire series, including this novel has to do with the clash of cultures.
Larry Montray is a Terran youth who arrives on Darkover for the first time with his father Wade. For years, Larry has dreamt of traveling to distant planets and experiencing alien cultures, but when on Darkover he is not permitted to travel outside the Terran Zone. It is only through disobeying that he is able to maintain a friendship with a young Darkovan native named Kennard Alton. Kennard is a son of the powerful Alton clan on Darkover, a clan which holds much authority on the planet. Even though Larry is forbidden to leave the Terran Zone, he is invited by the Altons to spend several months with the family at their countryside estate. This is a huge opportunity for Terran Intelligence as the ruling class of Darkover is very restrictive regarding who is permitted to roam freely outside the Terran Zone. This is nearly unprecedented access. But to Larry, it is simply the fulfillment of a dream and a chance to spend time with a friend. It is also the beginning of an adventure that risks the lives of both Larry and Kennard, as well as the still tenuous relationship between Darkover and Terra.
Bradley uses this novel, as she does with most of the Darkover series, to explore a culture clash. In this case, it is Larry Montray who is out of his element. Larry is thrust into a situation where everything that he knows is alien to the life he is living on Darkover and he tries to fit in as best that he can. But, the difference of culture also causes conflict in his friendship with Kennard.
"Star of Danger" is a relatively short novel, coming in at just over 200 pages, but it is packed with action and adventure. So much so that one might thing this was geared towards a slightly younger reader, but the storytelling is such that any reader of fantasy can enjoy this book.
My only complaint about "Star of Danger" has to do with continuity, but because this book was written so many years before the rest of the series and Bradley has always been willing to sacrifice continuity if it would help telling a particular story. The continuity issue that I am referring to in this book has to do with Larry's father, Wade Montray. Wade is a minor character, and he did admit to having been on Darkover before, but the text suggests that Wade does not know nearly as much about Darkover as we see in the "Renunciate Trilogy". It is also surprising that Larry does not know about this, because I would have expected that he would have learned about his father and grandfather's role on Darkover. In particular, I would expect Larry to have known about his grandfather, who had a prominent role in the Terran government on Darkover. Again, since this was written years before the bulk of the series, and with Bradley's willingness to sacrifice continuity for the good of the story, this does not trouble me as much as it otherwise would, but since I am reading the series in chronological order it was a small distraction.
Overall, "Star of Danger" was a short, enjoyable reading experience. I have long been a fan of the Darkover series, which doesn't seem to get nearly as much attention as it should merit. This is good, but not great fantasy (and overlaps with science fiction at times). Most of the Darkover novels can stand alone, and this one certainly does, so it may be a good entrance point into the world of Darkover.

A fast-paced, highly enjoyable Darkovan adventure.......2004-05-18
With Star of Danger (1965), I take my first footsteps into Marion Zimmer Bradley's legendary world of Darkover. While this particular story is far removed from the earliest chronicles of Darkover, taking place during the First Age (the era in which the Terran Empire rediscovered Darkover for the first time), it makes for an easy introduction to this strange and beautiful world. Star of Danger reads much like a juvenile novel of the type Heinlein perfected in the 1940s and 1950s. This does not mean the novel is not a magical read for adults - because it is. At the same time, however, it is filled with the type of youthful adventure and soul-stirring excitement that members of the younger generation can take great delight in. The protagonists are two teenaged boys standing on the cusp of adulthood, natives of two different cultures coming together for the unplanned-for adventure of a lifetime.
Young Terran Larry Montray is thrilled at the prospect of leaving Earth and moving to the exotic planet Darkover with his father, for he has long dreamed of experiencing space flight and embarking on adventures in alien lands. He is so excited that he studies the peculiar Darkovan language and learns how to read and communicate with the insular inhabitants of his planet-to-be. When he arrives on the planet, however, he is met with great disappointment; not allowed to explore the local area, he finds life in the Trade Cities no different from his life back on earth. Gradually, he talks his father into giving him more freedom, and he is surprised and gratified to discover that many of the local inhabitants mistake him for one of their own thanks to his red hair and knowledge of their language. The "backwards" Darkovans do not trust the Terrans, afraid of the type of change Earthmen will bring to their traditional, highly structured society, but Larry soon makes friends with a young Darkovan aristocrat named Kennard Alton.
Larry is given the unprecedented opportunity of spending several months with the Altons in the countryside, but this great adventure soon becomes a life-threatening one. If Larry and Kennard are going to survive the series of ordeals thrown at them in these pages (which include ambushes, deadly forest fires, capture, physical ordeals, and the threat of deadly Banshees), their bond of friendship must hold steady, and they must both learn from and defer to one another's very different strengths. Culture clashes are inevitable, but a spirit of understanding and friendship can not only lead them to safety, it may also serve as the beginning of a bridge between their two different, yet related, peoples.
Star of Danger is not a very long novel, and its action-packed plot is just the type of thing needed to get a youngster excited about the joys of reading; a few lessons on sharing and mutual understanding and respect also might pay dividends. This is not technically a juvenile novel, but it very well could be. Exciting yet meaningful, Star of Danger is a fast-paced science fiction adventure for all ages.
Full of Adventure!!!.......2000-08-09
I don't think this was MZB's best book but it was definitely a great book to read!!!
Larry, a Terran ... Kennard, a Darkover native ... They meet when Larry gets into a fight and soon become friends. Larry's father does not exactly approve of their friendship but when Kennard invites Larry to go with him to his estates Larry's father is forced to agree, not wanting to insult them. But more is in for Kennard and Larry when they are forced to work together ... to survive. An enemy has been attacking villages on Darkover and the two of them are separated from those they know. While the tension to prove who's best between them builds soon they have to put that all aside and work together, combining ideas and their own technology together so they can get back to their families ... alive.
A great book for anyone who loves reading about adventure and defeating the bad guys!
Star of Danger: Darkovan against Terran!.......2000-07-12
Star of Danger is a Darkover novel wich present us to Larry Montray, a terran, who comes to " The Blood Sun Planet" with his father and meet Kennard Alton, a darkovan, sun of Valdir Alton - member of th Comyn. They need to join force and learn from each other, looking for their weakness and discovering new habilities to survive all the way back to Thendara. Their action would change all the future in the relationship between these two culture.
