Book Description

Imagine you're a young boy—maybe as young as three or four—separated from your family by civil war, traversing deserts and mountains with little food or water, no medical care, and no protection from wild animals. Imagine watching hundreds of boys perish around you from hunger, disease, or attacks by enemy soldiers and wild animals. To most of us, it is unimaginable, but this was reality for "The Lost Boys of Sudan," thousands of young boys who were separated from their families and forced to walk approximately 1,000 miles to reach safe refuge from war and certain death.

For the first time, this award winning book offers readers a chronological timeline of the epic journey taken by these children, beginning in their rural villages of Southern Sudan and ending with their arrival as young men to the United States. Narrated through the voice of Joan Hecht, one of their American mentors, whom they lovingly call "mom" or "Mama Joan;" "The Journey of the Lost Boys" is a compelling story of courage, faith and the sheer determination to survive by a group of young orphaned boys. Because of Joan Hecht's personal relationship with them, she is able to portray their story in a way that most famous reporters and authors cannot. In addition to her extensive research of the political and historical events surrounding the long lasting civil war in Sudan, are the heart-rending personal stories and original drawings of the boys themselves. A must read for anyone interested in the the true story of the Lost Boys of Sudan!

5 out of 5 stars The tragedy of the children of Sudan.......2007-03-31

I can only summarize my comment about this book in a few words. The author Joan Hecht did a wonderful task in narrating the frightening and heartbreaking experience of the thousands of lost boys of the Sudan,Africa's largest country. Their dangerous journey involving thousands of miles in a very hostile landscape is incredible. The author's very kind heart, sincere consideration and admiration for these children is worth more than all the gold of the world. Very highly recommended for young and old.

This is the book you need to read if you are unfamiliar with the background of the issues in Sudan, the Lost Boys, and the issues faced by refugees who come to America. Ms. Hecht might not be an " academic", but she is the person with an enormous amount of first hand information on these subjects, and she breaks it down into managable pieces. Even if you are knowledgable on these subjects, this book is still useful as a clarifying tool. Ms. Hecht is also very committed, and that comes through on every page.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BOOK .......2006-08-11

Readers of this book will be touched by the stories of these incredible young men, who, at an early age, were separated from their parents and families. The atrocities witnessed by the boys are unspeakable. The author has provided the readers with stories that make those who have lived a life without fear take a new appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.

2 out of 5 stars A good term paper.......2006-07-26

The endless conflict in Sudan is another calamity that the press should have been bombarding us with daily for years. A tragedy of such dimensions should torment our collective conscience. This is exactly why it deserves a better telling than Ms. Hecht is able to offer us. The writing is amateurish and the text cries out for the editing it appears not to have been subjected to. Easy streamlining and the correction of some grammatical errors would make the book more readable and more powerful. Ms. Hecht's devotion to the cause of the Lost Boys is clearly sincere and praiseworthy, however, and she does deserve thanks for contributing to making us aware of the atrocities that go on in the world while we turn the other way.

5 out of 5 stars An accurate, heartfelt and well-written account.......2006-06-28

Joan Hecht's "Journey" is in this reviewer's opinion the most interesting and accurate book available on the topic of the Lost Boys. As a former foster father to one of the lost boys and a fellow author and researcher, I recommend the book without hesitation. It presents an extraordinarily complicated situation in a manner that is comprehensible, fascinating and accurate. It gives the reader a true sense of the horror, courage and hope that has gripped a generation of young Sudanese men.

For its rare photos, clear and organized presentation and sincere prose, I highly recommend this informative and inspiring book and thank the author for her outstanding efforts.

Book Description

For several decades a brutal army of rebels has been raiding villages in northern Uganda, kidnapping children and turning them into soldiers or wives of commanders. More than 30,000 children have been abducted over the last twenty years and forced to commit unspeakable crimes. Grace Akallo was one of these. Her story, which is the story of many Ugandan children, recounts her terrifying experience. This unforgettable book—with historical background and insights from Faith McDonnell, one of the clearest voices in the church today calling for freedom and justice—will inspire readers around the world to take notice, pray, and work to end this tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Voice for the Voiceless.......2007-07-31

What a fascinating collaboration. Grace Akallo, kidnapped as a child by Ugandan soldiers, teams with Faith J. H. McDonnell, one of the foremost advocates of justice for Ugandans. Together they tell not only Grace's story but a story of grace--God's grace in the midst of human atrocities.

For years rebel armies have been raiding Ugandan villages to kidnap children and force them into lives as soldiers or wives. More than 30,000 have been enslaved. This historically faithful account also is meant to inspire and inform: what can we do to stop such injustice?

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction, Spiritual Friends, and Soul Physicians.

5 out of 5 stars Never underestimate the power of evil.......2007-07-29

In GIRL SOLDIER, an interesting collaboration, Grace Akallo and Faith J. H. McDonnell tell the story, which we almost never hear about, of the children of Northern Uganda. Faith gives the political and historical background and the `reasons' for the madness, while Grace gives her first-hand account of being one of those stolen children. She tells how they are forced into the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) where girls are made to be soldiers and/or given to commanders as `wives'. Along with other girls who were kidnapped from her high school, she is forced to march without food or water. Any attempt to escape means instant death, usually at the hands of the other children. The youngsters are forced to bite the escapee to death, beat with them sticks, or stab them with bayonets and many other horrendous acts. Grace, during her tenure with the LRA, was once buried alive because they thought she was dead. Fortunately, she clawed her way to the surface and survived.

GIRL SOLDIER is a heartrending story of atrocities that rarely make the US newspapers or other mass media. It is the hidden shame that is frequently ignored. I found Grace to be a very strong young woman with an unbelievable will to not only survive, but to bring the world's attention to these abused young people of Uganda. The book is well written and frightening. In addition to the political background, Faith also lists several things any ordinary American citizen can do to help ease the torture of these children. It is a must read book, even though it is extremely painful. Everyone needs to know of the horrors some children must survive every day of their lives.

Deeply moving, and powerful. This true story made me proud to be a teacher. The Sister's courage challenges all of us to stick out necks out for children in need. This account also demonstrates the horror that follows anytime someone is sure God likes them best. My heart goes out to all who have suffered in Uganda.

5 out of 5 stars A Heartbreaking Story of Courage.......2006-10-02

Everyone should read this book to be more educated on how to act as advocates on behalf of children around the world, especially in Uganda. While the story is heartbreaking, it's necessary for us to know the world we live in. Thank you to the author for her excellent work in getting the story of these children out.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely rivetting - a MUST read for anyone interested in the Northern Ugandan crisis.......2005-06-30

The abduction of over 40 girls from the Catholic School at Aboke, and the nun who followed the rebels on foot to get them back is an amazingly heartwrenching and well told tale.

Els De Temmerman also offers fascinating insights into the twisted mind of rebel leader Joseph Kony, and his spiritual quest to purify the Acholi race. If at all you are interested in the Northern Ugandan crisis, then this is an absolute must read.

5 out of 5 stars this book brings tears to your eyes.......2003-02-28

Despite the writing style seduces you to finish this book the same day you have started it, the topic of it is so heart breaking and shocking, you just need to put it away and give yourself the time to reflect on what it is all about, to get your courage together, and proceed again.
This book is written by a great brave lady I happened to meet on one of her book presentations. It handles about the child soldiers in Uganda and the bravery of an Italian nun who risked her life to get them out of the hand of the rebellions in the North. Els has quit her job and focused on the writing of her experiences and on the project of helping the ex-kids soldiers back to a normal life. Because of her activities the warlord has recently, 2002, has put a price on her head. This however doesn't keep her from going again to Uganda.
The profits of this book goes to her education project.

The final book in the Chronicles of Tornor (after World Fantasy Award- winning Watchtower and The Dancers of Arun) takes readers back to Arun, where decades of peace and a ban on edged weapons in the great city of Kendra-on-the-Delta have seen the famed cheari warriors fade into legend. For 17-year-old Sorren, bondservant to city councilor Arré Med, the wanderlust of youth is fed by the need to learn whether the strange tower she sees in her dreams is a real place. When Sorren learns of her namesake, the Lady of Tornor Tower of northern legends, Sorren determines to go north and find Tornor when her bond expires in a year. Sorren is surrounded by others who hunger for new challenges, from her lover's adolescent son, Ricard, to the unhappy drunkard Kadra-no-Ilezia, who longs to sail away and chart new lands. Likewise Arré's younger brother, Isak, long relegated to the background while his sister handled the Med's civic and business responsibilities, is determined to carve out a role in the city's power structure--even at the cost of breaking ancient law. While his scheme forms the core of the plot, at the real heart of this book is the simple idea that peace alone is not enough for happiness. Sorren charts her course into the future along with the rest of Arun, searching for the wonder that makes life worth living. This is a thoughtful fantasy novel which effectively mixes intrigue and adventure with dreams, thwarted hopes, and renewed possibilities. --Charlene Brusso

5 out of 5 stars Great Trilogy Conclusion.......2006-04-10

While each of these books stands alone, they do add up to an amazing experience. The third one is perhaps the richest, as the culture seems to have evolved significantly since the first book. I loved the characters and the language. I wish Ms. Lynn had continued to write books like these and to write prolifically.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as the other two in this universe.......2000-11-08

I didn't find The Northern Girl as entertaining as the other two in this universe [Watchtower; The Dancers of Arun]; In fact, I didn't find myself much interested in anything until the very end of the book. She continues with her familiar themes: the flexibility of human love and sexual attraction, and the necessity of force to bring and maintain peace. It's as competently written as the other two, though the pacing seems much slower [and it could be that I simply wasn't as interested in the story]. I'm not sorry I read it, but I don't think I'll ever re-read it.

A note: It's not necessary to read the first two books to understand this one; all of them can be read out-of-turn.

5 out of 5 stars Reading stuff for the warm season.......2000-05-10

Down in the Delta, the martial arts and the power of the Red Clan have declined but have also been incorporated partially into general culture. Contrary to the first books of the Tonor series Northern Girl focuses on a female protagonist, but gives also ample space to male characters. The book tells the story of a young girl whose emerging telephatic gifts might eventually lead her far away from every home she knows. While she struggels with the question wheather she should stay or leave and thus loose her lover, who is captian of the guard of her "employer", she is caught in midst of a dangerous political intrigue.

Northern girl revisits the lands of the first two books and closes the circle as Tonor Keep was once founded by a renegrade smith from her southern city. The warm atmosphere of an almost utopian society where men and women can live and love each other freely and without any barrier to create families (including numerous children) in various gay, lesbian and even sometimes straight familiy arrangements is cleverly balanced with action.

This and the detailed descriptions of both characters, the world and the landscape make "Northern Girl" a pleasant summer read, I have read this book numerous times and am glad to ree it reprinted again.

It is a book I can highly recommend to any lower of martial art and utopian fantasy or any age.

I read this book a number of years ago. I really liked the story and how all the charactors were developed. I liked how she found what she was looking for even though her visions were of the past.

After her mother dies suddenly, seventeen-year-old Erin is virtually alone in the world. Her reserved father doesn't know how to relate to his only daughter now that his wife is gone. When Erin accompanies him to his construction site on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, she witnesses something that changes everything. Charlie White Bird, one of her father's workers, discovers the 127-year-old remains of a young Cheyenne girl, wrapped in a faded blue army coat; on each finger of her right hand is a silver thimble. Moehae, as Erin and Charlie come to name her, captures their imagination, and together they secretly try to protect her burial ground. As their commitment to their cause becomes more passionate, so, too, does their relationship, which they must also keep secret. When Erin discovers she's pregnant, she feels she has no other choice but to run away. With her mother's old suitcase and her granddad's journals on the Indian wars, she sets out, and as she moves farther from home, Moehae's story vividly unfolds in her mind, guiding her toward another way out of her predicament.

Evocative and sweeping in scope, Useful Girl is at once a love story, a young woman's heroic quest, and a moving testament to the power of the imagination.

Stevens topped his last book, "Curve of The World," which I thought could not be done. I love the way he writes. He brings you into the story - you feel the cold of the snow and the fear. I love the way he weaves a present day story with one of history. I read this in 3 nights it was so engrossing.

Useful Girl a novel about a woman who observes the exhumation of the hundred-year-old remains of a Cheyenne girl along the side of a dirt road. Life in the Montana town is never the same again. Who was the girl, and how did she come to die and be buried with no marker? The woman undertakes a harrowing investigation to learn the truth, and a personal crusade along with Charlie White Bird to protect the burial site, despite harsh repercussions. A compelling novel about growth, crisis, and the consequences of running away.

    4 out of 5 stars A voice to hear.......2004-05-02

If promises are made to be broken, are secrets made to be revealed?

As Marcus Stevens's "Useful Girl" illustrates, what is buried deepest from view is sometimes the most important link to human relationships. The metaphors are thicker than Cheyenne fog on the Yellowstone River, but "Useful Girl" unfolds as beautifully as the river itself.

Like Pete Fromm's 2003 "As Cool As I Am," Stevens has written a contemporary Montana story from a young woman's perspective. Clearly, neither present-day Montana nor first-person female stories by male writers are unexplored territories, but both can be inaccessible. Stevens is a gifted writer who has mastered both.

    Book Description

Catherine Cookson was one of the world's most beloved writers. Her books have sold millions of copies, and her characters and their stories have captured the imagination of readers around the globe. She passed away in 1998, but luckily for her fans, Cookson left behind several unpublished works, including the magnificent Kate Hannigan's Girl -- her 100th book, the powerful companion to her first novel, Kate Hannigan.

Set in the English countryside in the early twentieth century, Kate Hannigan's Girl is the story of Kate's eldest daughter, the lovely, free-spirited Annie Hannigan. Blessed with silver-blond braids and a lighthearted disposition, Annie enjoys a life her mother never had. She is surrounded by material comforts and a loving family, protected from the poverty and shame her mother endured in the slums. But as Cookson fans have come to expect, no good life can go unmarred by heartache.

Annie grows into a beautiful young woman, and soon she draws the interest of both friends and neighbors. She falls in love with Terence Macbane, the elusive boy next door. But there are those who would keep them apart: Her childhood friend Brian Stannard is determined to have her for himself, and her more worldly rival, Cathleen Davidson, harbors a bitter jealousy that will prove dangerous to all. Tormented by unrequited love, the revelation of her own illegitimacy, and the demands of her deep-seated faith, Annie discovers that sometimes love is not enough -- she must fight for what she wants.

Kate Hannigan's Girl is vintage Cookson. With its larger themes of early twentieth-century romantic love and class conflict, this novel showcases Catherine Cookson at the height of her storytelling powers, and it is sure to satisfy devoted readers everywhere.

    Download Description

A novel that is vintage Catherine Cookson, Kate Hannigan's Girl is alive with the captivating stories, detailed settings, and wonderful characters that have made her a beloved writer of historical fiction. It is the story of Annie, the illegitimate daughter of Kate Hannigan who fought her way out of the slums and into the arms of a kind and loving doctor, Rodney Prince. In Kate Hannigan's Girl, Annie must come to terms with her roots and endure the cruel stigma of illegitimacy in turn-of-the-century England. When Annie meets Terence, a poor but Oxford-educated young man who lives down the road, she discovers a love and security she never thought possible. But when her mortal enemy Cathleen determines to destroy Annie's happiness, Annie must summon all her strength and faith to keep not only Terence but her family and life as well. A moving tale that masterfully portrays the complex families and society of England's Northumberland countryside, Cookson delivers a poignant novel. Like the young Terence, fans around the world are sure to fall in love with Kate Hannigan's Girl.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Hmm..?.......2004-12-31

Sequels are usually very vague and boring compared to the first original works and this is by far no exception.

Annie Hannigan, the illegtimate child of Kate Hannigan goes through being made fun of for not have a real "father" and her enemy, so to speak, Cathleen Davidson amongst those who make fun of her out of jealousy.

I have noticed Chaterine Cookson makes a lot of religious references and after a while they get to be very annoying, like nails on a chalk board, she keeps rubbing into the reader about the character's beliefs and their significance. By the end of the book, Annie decides to turn to the church and become a nun and for the rest of the journey it is about her decision being vague, her parents (her mother mostly) suffering over her decision and everyone around her... I did not care for Annie as much as I did in the first book, whenever Catherine described her as a cold girl with her blank stare it just aggitated me, so perhaps if Catherine Cookson's goal was to deliver that type of a message - she has succeeded.

Overall I'd only recommend it if you really want to know what happened to Annie for it talks little about Kate and Rodney in this book, so unless this is your first book, don't read it, you will be disappointed.

    3 out of 5 stars A MEDIOCRE NOVEL BY A WONDERFUL AUTHOR..........2002-12-06

In this, her one hundredth published novel, the author takes a nosedive. For the legions of Catherine Cookson fans, it would have been better not to posthumously publish this mediocre novel and let the author rest in peace on her well deserved laurels. Catherine Cookson was a wonderful storyteller, but this book falls a bit short of her previous high marks.

Set in early twentieth century England, this is the story of Annie Hannigan, a girl who, through her mother's marriage to a wealthy country doctor, went from rags to riches. A flaxen haired, blue eyed beauty, Annie has her share of heartache when the boy she loves, Terence MacBane, seems elusive and out of reach. Her heartbreak is compounded when a viscious acquiantance, Cathleen Davidson, makes it her business to try and see that Annie and Terence never get together by putting Terence into her predatory crosshairs. Who shall be the victor? I am afraid that you will have to read the book and find out.

The usual themes found in a Catherine Cookson novel are found in this one, as well. Class conflicts, as well as romance and familial ties, abound. Unfortunately, the characters are not particularly well drawn, and the reader will find it difficult to care about what happens to any one of them. It reads more like a work in progress. Unless you already are a Catherine Cookson devotee, you will find it hard to find this book of interest. If you are not a fan, deduct one star from my rating.

    2 out of 5 stars Silly.......2002-06-29

I have read and enjoyed several of MS Cookson's earlier books when she was alive but I found this one to be soooo silly and farfetched. The characters were flat and unbelievable. You knew Annie was going to end up with Terrence from the very first and the action in between the first page and the last page was pretty boring. Lucky me, it was a Library book

4 out of 5 stars Romantic Love and Class Conflict.......2001-10-28

Set in the early twentieth century, this novel tells the story of the eldest daughter of Kate Hannigan, Annie. We first meet Annie when she is 14, growing up in a loving, prosperous family in the English countryside, but Annie is always aware of her mother's upbringing among grinding poverty, and the fact that Annie is illegitimate. Kate has since married a loving husband, Dr. Prince, but their background is never far from their thoughts.

When she is 19, Annie falls in love with the mysterious boy next door, Terence Macbane who has earned a seat at Oxford even though his family is very poor. Annie's so-called friend, Cathleen Davidson, is jealous of Annie, and tries to destroy her relationship with Terence. Annie's childhood friend Brian has long assumed that she would marry him, and his possessiveness is cloying and upsetting to Annie. Annie is also tormented and conflicted by her faith, and has vowed to become a nun, in spite of the wishes of her family.

Although the plot is full of melodrama, it works up to a successful and satisfying conclusion with love overcoming evil, and all the unpleasant characters put to rest. If you enjoy period romance novels, which I do as an occasional break from more contemporary writing, you'll enjoy Kate Hannigan's Girl.

    5 out of 5 stars Kate Hannigan's Girl.......2001-07-03

This book is so very "Cookson". I read at breakneck speed and and feared coming to the end. Catherine Cookson continues to force us to care for her characters and smell the grass under their feet.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for children and adults.......2005-10-18

A thorough, factual, story of the life of this remarkable women. Sarah Winnemucca was a woman ahead of her time in seeking justice and humanity for her people, the Northern Paiute, of the Great Basin. This book, for young adults, is wonderfully illustrated, including a timeline of her life. Teachers and readers will appreciate the references, glossary and index. This is the best introduction to Sarah Winnemucca for all ages. For a more extensive look at her life see Sally Zanjani's "Sarah Winnemucca," which is for high school and adult.

Can she find courage in her new big city home?

Meg is new to the city with its tall buildings and long shadows. It_s nothing like her Caribbean home. Here, the city closes in on her and she feels safe in her bedroom. But gradually she begins to discover that there_s more to the city than she thought. For instance, there_s the Chinese man who exercises in the courtyard near her apartment. His exercises are intricate and graceful, and they have interesting names.

One day on her way home from school, Meg finds a tiny swallow brought down by a sudden early snowstorm, and she takes it home to nurse it. Once it is better, she is reluctant to let the bird go, but her mother and the Chinese man both gently suggest that the bird needs to be free if it is going to live. Meg and her new friend, Jenny, both release the bird.

Courage to Fly captures the anxiety of a child who is alone in a new and strange world but whose imagination and courage are nourished by unexpected friendships.
