Book Description
Let's say you're a typical low-paid working stiff. You've sailed small boats all your life, you've saved a little money--you're finally ready for a real cruising boat. You drop in on Tadd, your friendly neighborhood yacht broker, who is more than happy to sell you that brand-new Trickledown 32 for only $90,000, plus a few optional extras like anchors, sails, cushions, a compass, instruments--stuff like that; say, $115,000 ready to sail.
"One hundred and fifteen thousand . . . dollars?"
"Not to worry," says Tadd. "Only 20% down and 10 years of easy payments and you're off into the sunset. Let's see, that's $23,000 down and, at 10% interest, only $1,215.79 per month--plus insurance of course. Send me a postcard from Tahiti."
"How much per month? That's half my salary! Don't you have anything in my price range?"
Tadd glances conspicuously at his Rolex, sighing, and points to a characterless Clorox jog with a spindly mast--a hyperthyroid daysailer with bunks for the seven dwarfs; NOT what you had in mind!
And then you see it, in the back of the yard, varnish hanging in strips off weather-beaten trim, rigging frayed, sails ripped and stained, dank interior with dangling wires and scurrying anonymous inhabitants. But underneath all the squalor you see the lines of a real cruising boat--a sturdy hull with a sprightly sheer from the pen of a Philip Rhodes or a Tom Gillmer--a fiberglass boat built back when craftsmanship still meant something.
You remember when you bought your house--it looked a lot like this boat, and you and your all-thumbs husband managed to breathe life into it over time, painting, papering, spackling--lots of spackling. This boat has possibilities.
"How much?" you ask.
"You're kidding, right?" says Tadd, flicking a bit of cobweb from his spotless Breton Reds. "Take it for, say, $8,000?"
Sold.
Well, now you've got it home, but Bob and Norm aren't there every weekend to help guide you through this restoration. Where to turn?
Turn to This Old Boat. Don Casey, co-author of Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, assumes you know nothing--not even how to use tools--and leads you methodically and good-naturedly through every step of turning a cast-off fiberglass boat into a real show-stopper, including the simplest and most comlete explanation yet of sailmaking--the sailor's darkest and most expensive art. Casey's step-by-step drawings guide you through a simple project--laying up a fiberglass instrument case, for example--then show you how to apply those skills to something more ambitious--like building a new hatch.
With this book and the best buyer's market in boating history, you can send Tadd that postcard from Tahiti--and have money to spare.
Can't afford that brand-new boat?
Take advantage of the best buyer's market in boating history. Turn a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht with This Old Boat.
Whether you are skilled or unskilled, whether you like sail or powerboats, here is everything you need to:
- Find the right boat at the right price
- Map out a logical, affordable renovation plan
- Work with fiberglass--everything from minor cosmetics to major structural repairs
- Renovate rigging, winches, engines, and other mechanical systems

"Casey's intelligent, practical advice covers just about everything, and his style is just what the doctor ordered for anyone daft enough to want to fix up an old boat."--Southern Boating
"A great book for anyone on the water."--Maine Coastal News

This Old Boat.......2006-07-22
Covers everything from dings to diesels. A must read for apprentice boatsmiths. This reading gives you the confidence and knowledge to fix up & repair most every defect in your used boat.
Before you buy that old boat - READ THIS BOOK!.......2006-04-02
This book is entertaining to read and really is an eye opener as to what you're getting yourself into re wooden boats. Really is a prmer on the topic or Wooden Boats 101 - when you are done reading it you'll know your up to the task or not.
Absolutely a MUST for your boat -- you need this book........2005-07-14
You're familiar of course with the numerous lists of necessary books to have aboard your boat. Boat Owner's comes to mind by Nigel Calder as one. HOWEVER, I believe you will find more useful information within the 408 pages. Also, it's book size (won't be a pain to store aboard) will be welcome.
The boring stuff (he tells you how to prioritize) -- some may need to hear/see safety first, and structure/bilge pumps et al. I could understand the reasoning but it wasn't real useful to me. His organizational check-lists will help folks actually plan chronology and FINISH the jobs.
The best part though was the step by step, well-illustrated how-to's. Everything I could want/need to know was covered, including how to read my electric meter, how much insulation the refrigerator needs, how much heat loss to expect in various sized boxes, how to plan for power needs, and a logic as to what we really need/can use/and WILL WORK aboard.
It's not a be-all/end-all book but it's very very good and well worth space aboard. You'll still need your shop books (for your engine, head, pumps, etc.) but with this gem you'll understand the why as well as the how to do repairs.
Even canvas repair is covered. Don't tell anyone, but it's not genius material. You can do it yourself and save big bucks. Mostly though, it's a book of instructions for repairs/improvements and "gosh, that'd be nice" type of things. If you don't know already, you'll learn step-by-step how to Fiberglas, how to make sails, how to fix wiring, WHEN TO HIRE EXPERTS, and more.
Even at retail price $35, it's well worth it, though of course I'd suggest saving $$ and buying used.
Not complete.......2001-05-26
I found that the book lacked certain basic information. for example: when restoring an old boat, one must typically contend with transporting the boat (perhaps mention of trailer, and cradle designs), or de-masting and storage, removing the multi-layers of antifoulant paint, correct the grazing of the gelcoat. For the interiour, one may decide to substitute teak for mahogany, white oak, etc, but there is no mention of altenate woods for cabinetry and interior work. For the deck anti-skid, how can you mold parts of the missing anti-skid, if you dont want to use threadmaster M. I just found the book a little bit less than basic.
I wish there were 10 stars! It should be on everyones shelf........2001-02-05
I don't know where to begin thanking Casey and recommending him at the same time. A feeble attempt follows:
This is the MOST valuable of my 80 or 90 boatbuilding books, hands-down. It doesn't matter what construction material you are using, or what your level of expertise. At the very least, it is a fun, witty, and motivating book. Even if you come out of it with no more knowledge than when you started (I guarantee that will not happen), it will give you the necessary wisdom and motivation to stay the course. It was the first 'boat building' book I ever purchased, and it alone motivated me to stop dreaming about a boat, and to start building/rebuilding one. And it was to this book I turned whenever a project was frustrating (this is almost daily, for the uninitiated--and he explains this, too). It was also the book I used as a primary reference, and it served me very well in the rebuilding of two medium-sized boats. It has since served me equally well in the building of boats from plans, though you will need more than he offers for this (that does not mean instead of this, but in addition to his book, another will be necessary).
Whether you are going to build a boat from scratch, or you are going to refurbish an older boat (he makes a hard sell), this book MUST be read. If you have only one book on your shelf pertaining to the construction/reconstruction/maintenance, this should be it. You will never forget it, and you will recommend it to others as strongly as I am to you. Your boat will feel naked without it.

A mother tiger wants her baby to go to sleep, but the little tiger resists. "'If I close my eyes,' he said, 'I can't see the sky.'" She assures him that he will not only see the sky when he sleeps, but will float among clouds and be cradled by the moon. Not in the least assured, the little tiger complains that if he closes his eyes, he will miss seeing the tree and the bird with blue feathers. With each concern, his mother consoles him with a comforting thought. If this gentle give-and-take were not calming enough for a bedtime story, Hallensleben's lovely dreamscapes (And If the Moon Could Talk) will surely do the trick. Double-page paintings of cloud animal shapes (with the little tiger cozying up with the moon), the "big mountains where the rain lives," and of mother tiger licking her baby are utterly hypnotic. Young children who are afraid to go to sleep will learn that "Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams" and that mom is never very far away. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
A little tiger takes an imaginative journey
The little tiger lay on his back in the tall grass.
"Close your eyes, little tiger," said his mother, "and go to sleep."
But the little tiger is worried about what sleep might bring.
His mother reassures him that once he closes his eyes, he will dream of magical places. And when he awakens, she will be right there, waiting for him.
Alternating between real-life scenes with the baby tiger and his mother and enchanted dream scenes of sleep's possibilities, Kate Banks's simple, comforting text and Georg Hallensleben's bright, colorful illustrations make this a charming bedtime story for small children.

Great Illustration.......2007-08-22
I first discovered this book at the library. I liked it so much that I've checked it out multiple times and have now purchased it.
Kate Banks' writing is a parent telling a story to a child. The words are soothing, but become more poetic with each reading.
Georg Hallenleben's art fills the page and takes you into the imagination of the writer.
I am a new mom and have received lots of books as gifts. I buy books used or on clearance as I see them. This is the first book I have purchased for my son at full price - I love it and would recommend as my top choice to anyone. I like it for naps.
Wonderful bedtime story...........2007-07-04
This book is one of my daughter's favorite bedtimes stories and mine. The little tiger is adorable and I love how all the illustrations complement the storyline. I absolutely LOVE this book and recommend it highly.
Purrfect for putting your little one(s) to sleep!.......2007-03-09
The beautiful illustrations and words of comfort help our two children, ages 2 and 4, at bedtime. The baby tiger expresses his fears of bedtime while mommy tiger provides words to calm and soothe.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-05-31
The writer and illustrator of "The Cat Who Walked Across France" team up again in another simple yet totally winning story. This time, our protagonist is a baby tiger--so innocent looking that he resembles a cuddly soft toy--who just can't go to sleep. With the enormous curiosity of any infant, this little tiger doesn't want to close his eyes and miss the sky, the trees, abright blue bird--all the wonderful, wondrous things around him.
In time-honored style, his wise mother counters all his objections with a parallel in his "mind's eye." In fact, she suggests that closing your eyes can bring you an even more varied and rewarding experience:
"The little tiger rolled onto his belly and listened to the leaves quiver overhead. 'If I close my eyes, I can't see the tree.' he said. 'But you can, said his mother. 'You can see many trees, where you can play hide-and-seek until the night finds you and brings you home."
This book was just made for quietly reading to your child as he or she gets into bed! ALong with the quieting possibilities offered in the book's beginning, Kate Banks also soothes the "what ifs." WHen the tiger imagines he's a bird, he suddenly acquires a fear of falling. The mother, who may have read some kids' books herself, answers "I will be there to catch you." IF he gets lost, "then I will find you." Banks knows no fear herself, she even tackles the dark: "'Don't be scared,' said his mother. 'Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams.'" (Awwwww...) The sleepy tigers imagines what he might dream of, and illustrator Hallensleben shows us a panoramic view of snow-capped mountains shaded blue and purple, sand dunes with purple-topped palms, and a giant orange fish jumping out of a deep blue sea, a seagull, an orange-billed penguin-ish bird, and the tiger dancing merrily on its back.
Hallensleben draws his typically rich oil colors here, and brush strokes and saturated, unusual color schemes (there's a bit of the Fauve here) are almost too visually exciting for a bedtime book. Still, a darkened room will dampen the colors, and Banks' ever-present, always reassuring mother tiger will undoubtedly work as well with your young audience as it did with her tiger cub.
A wonderful book!.......2005-07-18
This is a beautiful book about going to bed and having wonderful dreams! The story is simple for toddlers to understand and the illustrations are impressive. It really shows young kids' imaginations and that "mama tiger" is always there for her baby.

A toddler must have!.......2001-10-01
This has been my 3-year-old's favorite bedtime (and morning time, and afternoon time...) book since he was 2. The soothing rhymes are so relaxing. Beautifully illustrated. We've had the copy from our church library for so long we decided we needed to invest in our own. If you like Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. If you don't care for Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. A wonderful investment!
Love it, love it, love it.......2001-07-16
The sweet illustrations are nice and the wonderful rythym of this story is absolutely the best. It has a rhyming text that is peaceful and tranquil and the most wonderful thing to read your little ones (and maybe big ones) to sleep with. We love it.
A must for the 'go to sleep' library!.......1999-11-30
I love reading this book to my niece (age 3) and nephew (age 1) at bedtime--it's on their 'most requested' list! The illustrations are very beautiful and peaceful and the overall themes of love and security are just what children (and adults) need in this wild world! The soft sounds in the text of the story are very dreamy and sleep inducing. Lovely!

Buy this book! Help save comics!.......2000-01-19
Rick Veitch is one of the most talented writer/artists in the comic book field. Rabid Eye offers a surreal look into the mind of this unique individual. The biggest downfall of this collection is the lack of the beautiful covers from the original serial editions. It's a shame that the collapse of the direct market forced this magnificent book off the market. If you're interested in dream-work, or if you just love good comics, read this book. Perhaps high sales for this and other great comics will convince the publishers and retailers that comics are worth selling. If you enjoy this book, then I suggest searching Amazon for other great books with the following keywords: Alan Moore, Gaiman, Sim, Cerebus, Watchmen, Bissette and McCloud

Customer Reviews:
Eye of the Dream.......2007-01-06
Laura Kincaid is desperate. Her eight year old son Peter is missing and after three days the police are calling off their search for the boy. Her only hope is to contact Kain Cloudwalker. Kain is Laura's estranged husband and Peter's father although he has no idea that he has a son.
Kain tries hard to tamp down his hurt and anger when he sees Laura and she is surprised at how much she's still attracted to Kain. Neither of them will show their true feelings, but Kain does agree to help Laura find her son, which Laura is ecstatic about.
As they work together to try and find Peter, Kain and Laura each receive messages, either through dreams or from the many Navajo locals that they encounter. Their faith in each other and in themselves will be the strength that will sustain them through the dangerous journey ahead.
The Eye Of The Dream is about a love that is lost but then found again. The storyline seemed to be a little far fetched for me though. The villain's identity was surprising but the reasoning behind it fell short for me. I did however really like Kain and Laura. They are wonderful, strong characters and their love story is heartwarming. The Eye Of The Dream captivated me with the first few chapters but unfortunately, it failed to hold my interest.

exciting second chance at love paranormal romance .......2006-08-02
Laura Kincaid works as the head nurse at Tucson Children's Clinic raising her eight year old son Peter by herself. Just before Peter was born Laura walked out on her always absent Navaho spouse Kaine Cloudwater. She was fortunate to meet Ada Dooley who took the pregnant stranger in and gave her and her soon to be born son a home until the elderly woman passed away last year.
Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Klah informs Laura that her son is missing somewhere in Canyon Country. Three days later, Klah calls off the fruitless search in which no clues have surfaced. It is as if the child vanished into air. He tells her to ask Kaine, the best tracker in the area, to help her. Swallowing her pride, she begs Kaine to find Peter. Irate that she had a child with someone else after walking out on him, he reluctantly agrees and even acquiesces to her insistence that she accompany him. On their journey into wilderness, they talk until she finally tells him that he sired Peter. Outraged that she failed to inform him before, he fears the malevolent no longer human Skinwalkers abducted Peter though he is not sure of their purpose, but his offspring has the healing gift that Kaine and his male ancestors possess and they covet.
This is an exciting second chance at love paranormal romance that grips readers from the moment Klah calls and never slows down until the final confrontation. The action-packed story line uses Navaho mysticism on two levels; the evil Skinwalkers and the dreams the lead couple have had especially transmitted from his grandfather and Changing Woman. These elements along with the likable lead couple enhance and refresh a delightful tale.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2007-05-13
I teach at an inner city school in Miami. Ms. Gedddes' first hand account of growing up in an inner city environment was illuminating and moving. The questions she poses at the end of each chapter were not only helpful to me but have helped me in working with the children at my school. I have already passed my copy of her book along to one of our counselors. Ms. Geddes' book should become an anthem for all of those who who seek to find their way to a better life. No excuses, no nonsense.
A Little Inspiration.......2006-08-09
LEARNING TO DREAM WITH YOUR EYES OPEN by Melanie D. Geddes is a usable blueprint on how to dream and remove oneself from the dire straits inner city youth may find themselves in. The book is structured in an easy to read manner and each chapter ends with "Lesson Learned" activities to begin the journey. It begins with "Why Dream?" and ends with "Quiet Confidence." In between, the chapters deal with issues such as "Beating the Odds", "Changing Lanes" and "From Impossible To Possible", just to name a few. What I found interesting is that the chapters are no-nonsense, straightforward and if taken seriously, could actually alter a young person's life, no matter the situation.
As I read I realized this book is not only for inner city youth, but youth and adults from all walks of life. Techniques are given on how to set attainable goals, improve academic performance and take ownership for one's actions.
The author herself was raised in an inner city and she shares some aspects of her story, which fosters believability with the reader.
My favorite chapters are "Changing Lanes" and "Decisions, Decisions, Decisions." "Changing Lanes" highlights the necessity of altering your goals when the realization hits that your stated goal is not what you really want. The author also discusses how our lives can lead to nowhere and how fear and the need to feel safe allow us to accept our current situations. Chapter 8, titled "Decisions, Decisions, Decisions," deals with responsible behavior and how to change a situation, correct mistakes and learn from the mistakes of others. The author cites some real life examples of bad decision-making and the consequences of those decisions. Other reading materials are cited, which are excellent and motivating reads as well. This is a wonderful tool for all to use, whether you are a child, parent, educator, human service worker or volunteer; all will find something useful to help our youth succeed in life. My favorite quote - "circumstances can impact your starting point, but they don't have to necessarily determine your ending point."

One Of My Favorites.......2002-09-07
My aunt bought me this book for Christmas when I was about three or four, back in the late 70's when it was new. I loved it. It was my favorite book. My mom used to read it to me over and over again. I still have it, even though saddly the original cover is no longer with it. And I will never get rid of it. To this day I still every once in a while pull it off the shelf and read it, remembering those nights long ago when my mom was reading it to me. This is a great book, and if you can find a copy of it somewhere, I would highly recomend picking it up.
A book I loved to death.......2000-11-29
This was my favorite book when I was little. My father read it to me over and over again until I had it memorized! The repetition is wonderful for young readers; even if your children can't read, Jeffers' illustrations are enough to make anyone a little sleepier. I still dream of ending up in the treehouse at the end of the book. It's a pity Close Your Eyes is no longer in print.
My All-Time Favorite Bedtime Book.......2000-02-29
Over the years of reading books to my children, Close Your Eyes became both my favorite and my daughter's. The lyrical story is told on two levels, perfectly complimented by the illustrations. As a father, I identify with the dad in the story. My daughter is in college now, but we occasionally recite the story to eachother in our correspondence, and still treasure the countless bedtimes that we read this book together. It is, indeed, the perfect gift for new parents.
Great words and pictures for toddlers.......1999-12-14
My son loves this book and it's a great way to prepare him for bed. Its words are simple and easy to remember. He's already memorized parts of the book (as have we). And the pictures are great. Colorful and full of recognizable objects and animals. My son actually anticipates each page. I'd recommend this book to anyone who uses reading stories as part of the bedtime ritual.
This is my children's favorite bedtime story........1998-05-23
The lyrical poem and duel illustrations make this book a treasure. Susan Jeffers' illustrations of a father and his child's bedtime struggle add a whimsical touch. We have read this book so many times both my girls can recite it word for word. My eighteen year old daughter is threatening to steal the book when she leaves for college in the fall. I am browsing for additional copies in case she follows through on it.

arent you sick of lame dream books that dont make any sense? this one is perfect for the rest of us. everything's explained easily and completely. tucker says our dreams have nothing to do with "symbols"...they're about us, and whats going on in our brains. you GOTTA read this it makes everything make sense.
An okay book for the most part..........2001-05-23
Have you ever wondered about the history of dreams? What something meant in your dream? Or maybe even wondered about the weird dreams other people have had? This book includes all of this and some more...
I have read some books on dreams, but never really been able to get such an insight on them. It tells you everything about dreams and even special things to help you remember them. I thought my dreams were weird! Wait until you read some of the ones that are in this book! After buying this book I immediately started to read it and couldn't put it down. This book gave me a lot of knowledge such as "How come I had the same dream as my friend last night?" and about sleepwalking bizarre dreams, etc. Though I think they could have included a little more in it. I felt that somethings were missing.
I reccomend this book for anyone who wants to really get inside their dreams!
The Critics Speak...........2001-04-10
From VOYA This highly accessible and easy-to-read guide to dreams and their interpretation for young adults is arranged into three sections that are equally stimulating and informative. Some of the intriguing topics in part one include nightmares, prophetic dreams, freaky dreams, dying in your dreams, famous dreamers, sleepwalking, and sex and dreams. Part two offers a sometimes humorous analysis of nineteen different "weird dreams," such as "The One Where the Mushroom Grows Out of My Face," "The One Where I Kiss My Boyfriend, Then Get Hit by a Truck," "The One Where My Parents Throw Me Off a Cliff," and the ever-popular, "The One Where All My Teeth Fall Out." The book concludes with a do-it-yourself section for those interested in starting a dream journal, learning how to lucid dream, and developing an inner eye for self-analysis. Although teeming with fun facts, fascinating statistics, and relevant quotes, the appealing page layouts are not overfilled with cartoons and sidebars. Especially appealing is how Shaw made convenient use of his own dreams and personal experiences regarding the issues presented, infusing an otherwise flat study with a rather jovial and inviting voice. This technique not only helps give examples of the various concepts he introduces but also provides the necessary variety to the instructional narrative. With its wide appeal, this above-average and scintillating book is a recommended purchase for all public and school libraries. Dreamy.......2000-08-29
I've never really been a big dream freak until I had this one dream about playing tennis against both Williams sisters at the same time...and winning! I learned a lot from this book--and for $6, that's cool with me.

Book Description
People say hiking the Appalachian Trail is a "life changing experience" and I agree! I believe I've learned to be a little more patient. I've learned to realize what is important in life. I've learned to appreciate relationships with friends and loved ones. I've learned about spending time with myself. I've learned about pain and how much I could stand. I've learned the joy of climbing Mount Albert and seeing the beauty of the surrounding mountains. I've learned the happiness you feel when you get into a town for your mail drop. I've learned to appreciate what it means to have "Trail Magic" come your way. I've seen the beauty of the wild animals and I've seen how Mother Nature displays her beauty as you hike from Georgia to Maine. I've watched as everything turns green and the flowers begin to bloom. I appreciate a good pair of hiking boots while trekking through the rocks of Pennsylvania and boulders of the beautiful White Mountains. I've learned to deal with the weather changes as your going across Mt. Washington and the Presidential Mountains. I've learned of the peacefulness of the 100 Mile Wilderness and I've felt the excitement of climbing the last mountain, Mt. Katahdin. I think of these many things every day. I dream of them every night. Whenever I see a mountain or I pass a wooded area, my memory takes me back to the Appalachian Trail. Do you know what? I am going to do it again when I'm 70! "It may not be the best book ever written, but it is the best book you will ever read". This was a quote from a friend of ours who read this book. It is a heart felt book concerning the hike my husband took on the Appalachion Trail. It covers his many experiences and challenges. You won't be disappointed!
