Uh. . . .......2005-08-18
I absolutely loved The Children of Promise series by Dean Hughes, but I could not get past Troubled Waters in this series. I got maybe half way through, buy couldn't read anymore because of the way that one certain character is completely fawned over. I'm sorry, but just because someone may be beautiful in outward appearance does not make them a "beautiful" person and it also does mean that every Tom, Dick or Harry on the street is going to fall at their feet. I enjoy other books by Hughes, but I really hesitate at this one.
Where's the next one?!.......2003-01-29
This book is great. I am struggling (still) with finding good books to read, but I finished this one in about 5 days and I even work full time and have stuff going on every night. Great touching story and I can't wait for the next one!!

Despite some lulls along the way the book is very good.......1998-10-16
Coyle sets out to discuss two very topical issues in today's American society, racial strife and Alzheimer's. Her look at both topics is insightful. The characters are the book's strongest suit. At times the action slows to a plodding pace, but all in all the book was enjoyable.
Clarity of detail and character render this book outstanding.......1997-12-31
The author's ability to crystallize the details of experience generates clear understanding of a handful of characters whose lives and generations are intertwined. This is a must-read for those with an interest in generational and racial issues and the hope that lies in addressing them.
Book Description
Troubled Waters presents a comprehensive analysis of the political and economic dynamics of the Caspian basin. It examines the diverse issues and players in what has become a modern variant of the "Great Game" of the 19th century. Following a historical overview of the region and its oil industries, the book analyzes the domestic politics and the foreign policies of the five states bordering the Caspian - Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. It identifies all the external interests involved in the Caspian's political rivalries and control over its resources and territory, including the US, the European powers, various nationalist movements, Islamic militants, national corporations and international corporations.
Customer Reviews:
thoroughly written, easy to read.......2007-05-08
I knew a few things about central asia and the caspian region before reading these compelling pages. The authors knowledge is spread into this short book, giving all the information necessary to be aware of the geography, politics and economy of the countries in this part of the world. As you will see, the region is of main interest of "external actors" such as the United States and Europe, and big internal players such us Russia and Iran, all well depicted by the authors.
Energy is the main business of the caspian countries of course, but due to the geography in where those countries lay and the politics and different interest that mark the region, render difficult to pump that gas and oil off to new markets. Hence, everything here is long pipelines through different countries that help to make the price of the product less competitive, also affecting new projects (for example, a pipeline through Afghanistan). Thing is, these countries have plenty of gas resources that need to have markets. This book is a great read for those interested in the subject.
Caspian must.......2002-09-18
The two authors are very knowledgeable about the region and give the most comprehensive and updated analysis of the Caspian area, covering both the political and economical parameters. The book has an impressive bibliography, which makes it an excellent research tool for whoever is interested in expanding on the subject. Very well written.
Finally a long awaited all-in-one manual for the Caspian.......2002-03-26
In the decade since the breakup of the Soviet Union, we
were witness to the maneuvering and positioning of various
neighbor states and global powers as the battle for world
energy grows hotter.
I found this book to be a great introduction to the Caspian
region. Before this book, researchers and policymakers had
to look hard(and in many places) to find objective sources
of information that answered all their questions. This book
contains all that one needs to quickly learn about the region,
its history, politics, current problems, and perspectives for
the future.
Policymakers around the world recognize the strategic
importance of geopolitical control of the region. What I found
most striking is the equal attention given to all of the
political players in the world and not just the point of view
of Moscow or Washington.
I also appreciated the attention given to the Caspian's
environment, which is currently threatened to become another
Aral sea.
This book is for everyone starting from diplomats to
individuals who have an interest in the region and anyone
in between. I'll be recommending it to journalist friends
of mine who are covering or aspire to cover the region
in the future.
Book Description
Bridging Troubled Waters is about a robust and holistic approach to resolving conflict. It begins where much of the currently accepted theory and practice in the field leaves off. Like a hand pulling back the curtain from parts of us that have been closeted away, this book reveals ways we can use more of ourselves in addressing conflict. Moving beyond the analytic and the intellectual, it situates our efforts at bridging conflict in the very places where conflict is born--relationships. From relationships come connection, meaning, and identity. It is through awareness of connection, shared meaning, and respect for identity that conflicts are transformed.

Book Description
This work determines the processes that strengthen hostility between opposing groups and identifies those who are willing to act in order to change these situations. The backdrop of the Arab-Israeli conflict is used to demonstrate how collective identities are shaped by membership in ethnic and religious groups, and how these identities influence attitudes and behavior. It examines political attitudes, hatred of "others," and willingness to assume responsibility for the various social issues of this conflict. This book takes a fresh approach to the Arab-Israeli conflict by relating it to three distinct societies: Jews, Arabs, and Palestinians. Though it deals with conflict, this assessment is optimistic in the sense that it shows that bridges can be built and maintained among these groups. These bridges are still small and fragile, but may be the structures upon which more elaborate relationships may be developed.

Book Description
When heavy rains washed out the low-lying towns around River Heights, my friends and I knew we had to help. That's when we hooked up with Helping Homes to build apartments. Then the two-time state champion basketball team, the Lowell University Bullets, showed up -- and the waters, so to speak, turned murky.
While George couldn't be happier about working close to J. C. Valdez, the Bullets' star forward, not everyone around us is a fan. Take the person who is destroying our work and spray painting threats to J. C. on the walls, for starters. Is this the product of some basketball feud, or something much larger? I may be up to my elbows in sheet rock, but that won't slow my sleuthing. . . .

Troubled Waters is a modern, suspenseful read.......2007-09-19
Troubled Waters by Carolyn Keene is the newest book in the Nancy Drew: Girl Detective series. Growing up reading Nancy Drew mysteries, this book had a lot to live up to. Carolyn Keene has constructed a mystery novel that is modern and full of suspense to engage today's young readers. She has totally lived up to this veteran reader's expectations.
Nancy and her friends set out to help their town recover from devastating flood damage. While reading, I immediately thought of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Although the events in the town of River Heights were not nearly as catastrophic as the events following Katrina, Keene used her natural ability to encourage the reader to question the events unfolding in the book and draw and revise conclusions throughout this small town ordeal. While remodeling an abandoned building with a team similar to that seen on today's show Extreme Home Makeover, many strange events occur. Most of the trouble is centered on J.C. Valdez, a star basketball player lending his time and talents to help those in need. Is someone out to sabotage his career and reputation or is someone interested in halting the building of hundreds of apartments for those left homeless by the flood? Read Troubled Waters by Carolyn Keene to find out.

Book Description
Around the world, one billion people lack access to clean water. Droughts, floods, and waterborne diseases kill tens, perhaps hundreds, of millions of people (mostly children) every year. And huge multinational corporations see a profit opportunity unparalleled even by oil or gold. From Bolivia to Britain, water supplies are being privatized and sold for profit, cutting millions off from the single most crucial human need. Meanwhile, consumers in industrialized countries such as Italy, Britain, Australia, and the United States eagerly drink millions of liters of bottled water every day--some of which is less pure than the stuff flowing from their taps at home--at a cost of about one thousand times what tap water costs. In America, beef-flavored bottled water for dogs is sold; in Nigeria, you can buy a bottle of water guaranteed to make men more virile. Why are the politics of water so skewed, and what's being done about it? This book explores the problems and the solutions, and provides resources for ordinary readers to get involved.

Well-Presented Material.......2006-02-21
I found this book to be a very compelling source of information about our Global water crisis. It presented information in formats that are very clear and to the point. It illustrates quite well the tug-of-war going on today between corporations that sell bottled water and/or soft drinks and the people of countries who desperately need that water at low prices. This book defines water's critical role in the network of the earth's resources and how clean water should be the right of all human beings, not a commodity purchased by corporations and sold at huge profits. A must read!
Truths, lies, and myths surrounding a range of water issues.......2005-02-10
Anita Roddick is both an entrepreneur and an activist and in Troubled Water: Saints, Sinners, Truth And Lies About The Global Water Crisis, informatively surveys the issues involved in worldwide potable water availability, from the politics of water distribution and water quality to global warming and bottled water myths. Essays from Greenpeace, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and others, outline truths, lies, and myths surrounding a range of world water issues.
For water ignorants.......2004-10-15
This book could well be termed Water 101, but if you have been interested in water for more than a day, it is likely you already know more than what is inside. Besides, the information is poorly displayed in my opinion.
Most amazing book series ever by a business person.......2004-10-01
Troubled Water is part of an amazing library of books Anita Roddick, global entrepreneur and founder of Body Shop, has spent much of the last 3 years authoring and is publishing simultaneously.
Troubled Water is likely to have extraordinary consequences for global corporations in the water and soft drinks industries. For years, this sector has been asked by poor countries to collaborate responsibly and not to try to take over water in countries where cumulatively a billion people already have no fresh water access. As the author of World Class Brands 15 years ago, and a marketer ashamed to agree with most of Naomi Klein's charges of how much badwill global marketing has needlessly compounded over the last decade and a half, it will need a heroic and deeply human response from the likes of Coca-Cola if it is to remain in top 10 global branding lists 5 years out.
It is fitting that within days of the publication of Troubled Water, the president of the World Bank has declared a war on global poverty. Over in Britain, from where I submit this review, you can be assured that Water will be the main activist theme aligning 20000 concerned people converging for the European Social Forum (October 2004), and celebrating the Brazilian led launch of the International Free Water Academy. It is time the people of the world took back the branding of the humanity of water, and 2005 is a year jammed full of large scale change networking events, each of which will pay special tribute to water as a symbol of human freedom. Troubled Water is a book of our times, the start of an activepeace movement as well as with your and my god's blessings a whirlwind contributor to James Wolfesohn's war on poverty. It would be fitting to pay tribute to his and Anita's common sense of humanity and water with the way the World Bank declares our future's interdependence at every locality of the globe:
"The big issue of our time is global security. At present, we view it mostly through the lens of Baghdad or Beslan. While we certainly have to deal with these and other immediate concerns, by far, the greatest potential source of instability on our planet today is poverty, and the hopelessness and despair that it brings to so many in our world. Sixty years ago, the world recognized the need to bring hope to the millions of people left in shattered nations after World War II, and the World Bank was created to help them rebuild their lives. Its mission today remains as critical as it was then, if not more so. It is in all our best interests to help countries that struggle with crushing poverty to take basic steps, such as getting boys and girls into school; preventing diseases like H.I.V./AIDS, malaria and diarrhea; protecting our forests and oceans; and removing obstacles to trade so that poor farmers can get their products to market. Helping poor countries develop in this way is not merely the right thing to do ( though, of course, it is): investing in development is the safe thing to do. My generation did not grow up thinking this way. We thought there were two worlds - the haves and the have-nots - and that they were, for the most part, quite separate. That was wrong then. It is even more wrong now. The wall that many of us imagined as separating the rich countries from the poor countries came down on Sept. 11, 2001. We are linked now in so many ways: by economics and trade, migration, environment, disease, drugs and conflict. In our world of six billion people, one billion have 80 percent of the world's GDP, while the other five billion have the remaining 20 percent. Nearly half this world lives on less than $2 per day. One billion people have no access to clean water; over 100 million children never get the chance to go to school...

Book Description
It's been a picnic ground, an amusement park and home to million-dollar mansions, but few know the complex story behind the Canadian island adopted by Detroiters as their own.
Bob-Lo: An Island in Troubled Waters brings to life with vivid detail not only the numerous changes that have swept over the island with the tides of time, but specifically the impact it has had on its longest-residing private citizen, Dorothy Tresness.
Her story is as turbulent as the history of the island itself. The beloved Bob-Lo Boats are gone, the rides are dismantled but the story of Bob-Lo is far from over as Dorothy, in her 80s, steadfastly holds claim to her private slice of island paradise.
