4 out of 5 stars Nice journal.......2007-07-30

I quite like this book, though I bought it in a store, so I knew what it was when I purchased it. Yes, it's a journal with blank pages to write on. But what I liked about it is the interesting lists of places to see that pop up every 10 pages or so. It also has a quote about travel on each page. The cover is not a hardback, but not a paperback... somewhere in between. It has an attached ribbon bookmark, and a pocket in front that I would use to store receipts on the trip. I would have liked it to be spiral bound to make it easier to write in, so I may take mine to Kinko's and have them cut the binding off and spiral bind it for me.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2007-06-18

Not sure what I was expecting but I think you can get the same thing from a cheap journal without the fancy name

4 out of 5 stars Before You Die Journal.......2007-05-14

The book, while constructed of good quality is not exactly filled with information. It is more like a daily travel journal for your personal observations and notes of sites you seen during the travel. The book also is a checklist of places to visit/see. The checklist portion of the 1000 sites has a brief description of the location.

5 out of 5 stars 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal.......2007-02-04

Very informative and easy to use.

4 out of 5 stars Good Addition.......2006-11-03

This book is high quality and a good addition to "1000 Places To See Before You Die," but not really necessary. Has good trivia interspersed throughout it and between whatever you write in it during your travels.

Book Description

A world that exists in the shadows of our own.

A conflict we will never see.

One woman stands between those determined to control history and those who will risk their lives for freedom.

Maya is hiding in plain sight in London. The twenty-six-year-old has abandoned the dangerous obligations pressed upon her by her father, and chosen instead to live a normal life. But Maya comes from a long line of people who call themselves Harlequins—a fierce group of warriors willing to sacrifice their lives to protect a select few known as Travelers.

Gabriel and Michael Corrigan are brothers living in Los Angeles. Since childhood, the young men have been shaped by stories that their late father was a Traveler, one of a small band of prophets who have vastly influenced the course of history. Travelers are able to attain pure enlightenment, and have for centuries ushered change into the world. Gabriel and Michael, who may have inherited their father’s gifts, have always protected themselves by living “off the Grid”—that is, invisible to the real-life surveillance networks that monitor people in our modern society.

Summoned by her ailing father, Maya is told of the existence of the brothers. The Corrigans are in severe danger, stalked by powerful men known as the Tabula—ruthless mercenaries who have hunted Travelers for generations. This group is determined to inflict order on the world by controlling it, and they view Travelers as an intolerable threat. As Maya races to California to protect the brothers, she is reluctantly pulled back into the cold and solitary Harlequin existence. A colossal battle looms—one that will reveal not only the identities of Gabriel and Michael Corrigan but also a secret history of our time.

Moving from the back alleys of Prague to the heart of Los Angeles, from the high deserts of Arizona to a guarded research facility in New York, The Traveler explores a parallel world that exists alongside our own. John Twelve Hawks’s stunningly suspenseful debut is an international publishing sensation that marks the arrival of a major new talent.

4 out of 5 stars Fun not literature.......2007-10-04

I never saw the hype on this book. I found it by surfing Amazon. An earlier reviewer who compared it to Matrix meets Jason Bourne had it right. This is certainly not literature but it's a fast past blast of a read. The plot has already been summarized by others so I won't do it again. My addition would be that the premise is worth thinking about given the state we are in today. It's an e-ticket ride but a thoughtful one in between the mayhem.

4 out of 5 stars Quick read.......2007-09-26

Quick, unchallenging, fun, entertaining read.

Does not make you think to much, if you need a fast read for a long weekend, then The Traveler will work.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks.......2007-09-19

This book actually generated quite a bit of buzz before it was released last June and I had it recommended to me by a few people saying that it was in the vein of Stephen King, and since I'm a fan I would probably enjoy this. I managed to get an ARC through the bookstore I used to work at and then it sat on my shelf for about six months until I picked it up and decided to start reading it last week. I finished it about four days later after pretty much eating it up. I would describe it as very akin to a Michael Crichton techno-thriller with some plenty of sci-fi mixed in. After getting about a hundred pages into it I was even wondering if Crichton much just be working on this same book currently because of its similarities with his story lines, the main difference being that this was a little slower and the characters had more depth to them. After finished this book I realize that this has certain elements that Crichton would never put in his book make this an enjoyable original piece of fiction. If the Matrix trilogy had originally been made into a book trilogy and done by a good writer, it would've been something like The Traveler.

The book is set near to the present day or perhaps twenty or thirty years into the future. The world is pretty much like it is now, except for being a little more high-tech and with better gadgets. There is a group of people known as Travelers who have the unique ability of being able to leave their bodies and travel to other worlds or realms. They have existed for many thousands of years, Jesus and Mohammed are though to have been travelers. There is a group of people known as the Tabula whose job it is to eradicate these travelers by whatever means necessary. They have also been in existence for a long time. Then there is a group called the Harlequins whose job it is to project the Travelers by whatever means necessary; again they have been around for a very long time.

In the present it is thought that no travelers are in existence anymore, having been wiped out by the Tabula, while the Harlequins have been reduced to very small numbers. Our main character is the daughter of a Harlequin whose father is soon killed in the book and while she had renounced her duty as a Harlequin, due to the lack of these people remaining, she has been summoned to become a Harlequin once more, because two offspring of a traveler have been found alive in California. The traveler's gift is usually passed down through genes, though this is not certain. It is her job to find those two brothers and keep them safe. The Tabula also know of the existence of these two brothers, but their modus operandi has changed dramatically. They no longer wish to kill the Travelers, but to harness their powers. The reason being that using past Travelers they have been in contact with another race living in one of the other realms that the Travelers go to, and this race is vastly superior and more intelligent and has been sending them new inventions and technology such as creating quantum computers that can measure how Travelers pass into these other realms as well as being able to send additional matter into these realms. So they want to use the Travelers as guinea pigs to work with this new race.

This the setting of the book with a lot more details than I have given and features great chase scenes and amazing fights. The Harlequins are taught from when they are children how to fight with different weapons. At the same time the Tabula basically have the Internet, all technology, the government, police, etc. under their control. So their world has its similarities to that of The Matrix, as well as to Stephenson's Snow Crash and Gibson's Neuromancer; and I also saw a lot of Blade Runner in the book too. With the world in its current state, it's not surprising that a book like this has been written. The good thing is that apart from being a really great read, it is the first book in a trilogy and hopefully unlike the Matrix trilogy, it will not doom itself to an ugly death before one is half way through the second book.

Interestingly, the author John Twelve Hawks is very much a recluse who apparently has never met with his agent, has been working on the book for a long time, and has never owned nor has he ever watched any TV. So there are some thought-provoking parallels to keep in mind, along with some strange websites that have been created for the book, though it almost seems as if some of them were created before the book came out, which is just plain weird.

Just finished The Traveler. I don't think I'll be reading the sequels. Very unfulfilling. Not trash, but having just graduated with a creative writing degree I have to say that it seems like the book went to print without an editor. It's rife with cliches. The phrasing is awkward at times. The similes feel forced. The action is minimal and poorly rendered (When you're doing a "spinning back-kick" steel-toed boots don't help much since you're mking contact with the sole of your foot.) The secret history aspect of the book leaves much to be desired. (The Illuminatus Trilogy blows the doors off this lightweight if you're looking for age-old conspiracies.) Honestly, there were so many instances where I wished that I could have given some feedback to this inept writer before the book went to print. I'm not saying he's terrible, but for the amount of hype that this book have been getting...let's save our genuine praise for books of more merit. There is a huge void in this genre, and I think that this book is doing so well due to a lack of competition; it is filling that void in a way that Clancy and Brown aren't really capable of. I can't think of any books published in the last year that are along the same lines. People want this kind of a story, but they want it done well, with characters that have depth and action that matches the story's ambition. For sci-fi I think I'm going to stick with Asimov, Simmons, Card, and Bradbury for a while. The Traveler was enough junk food to last me a few years. If anything, though, it is a nice example of what not to do, or at least what can be done with minimal effort. I would say that it shows promise. Maybe in a few years Mr. Twelve Hawks will have organized his philosophy and weaved it into something that sounds more like storytelling and less like preaching.

Book Description

With outrageously false accusations piling up against her famous political family and an ex-fiancé in hot water determined to take her down with him, the last thing Jana Jasper needs is more trouble -- especially man trouble. But when she heads to the grocery store for an ice cream fix, not only does the muscled hunk in the frozen foods section ranting about spaceships and invasions look crazy, he looks…familiar.

Cavin of Far Star has never forgotten the girl he met during his weeks spent on that quaint little world, planet Earth, the girl who didn't believe he was real. And now he'll risk his future to save her. All she has to do is take him to her leader. Simple enough plan -- although Jana isn't so easily convinced. Hell-bent on charming his way past her defenses, he's determined to stay one step ahead of the galaxy's most feared assassin -- and may just capture his favorite Earthling's heart in the process.

4 out of 5 stars new direction done very well.......2007-08-20

This is new style for author Grant. A lighter tone, a freer tone, and I really enjoyed it. It reminded me a bit of that old Twilight Zone episode where the old man is really a prince hiding on earth and he falls for little girl who is crippled. Not saying the plot line is anything alike, just that sort of feel. Grant evokes that sort of timeless sense of when the world was a bit gentler than it is now. I am looking forward to more in the series that begins with this promising start.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Near-Future Adventure.......2007-07-26

Nine-year-old Jana Jasper is the youngest child of a California state senator and a Russian ballerina. Jana knew great things were expected of Jaspers, but although she had a fertile imagination she had never been able to communicate verbally. She knew what she wanted to say but when she tried to speak the words got all jumbled and refused to come out. The one thing she wanted most was the gift of gab, and one night she got her wish!

A Coalition scientist has been sent to Earth to collect specimens in order to determine the planet's habitability. If the planet is found to be habitable, the Coalition would relocate the native inhabitants replacing them with their own citizens. Curiosity finds his young son, Cavin, caught in an oak tree beneath Jana's bedroom window. Unable to tell anyone about the magical glowing boy she dubs Peter (after Pan) Jana determines to rescue him herself. Cavin is as delighted with her as she is with him. For the first time he becomes concerned about the Coalition's intentions. Unfortunately he cannot stay. One night he return's to Jana's window to say goodbye. When Jana tries to follow him she trips and falls, cutting her knee. Cavin heals her wound, bestows her with a kiss, and flees. An amazed Jana calls after him, and it appears that he's done more than heal her outside. She can speak! Jana tells her older sister that some day she will marry that boy.

Jana put her gift to good use and by age 29, she had become the youngest state senator in California history. Unfortunately her social life hadn't been nearly as successful. Now at 32, the pressure was on for her to make a commitment or ruin her career. It's not that she hadn't tried. She'd even gone as far as to become engaged three times, but she'd never felt the magic that she'd felt as a little girl with "Peter", and that had been a figment of her imagination. Or had it?

When the Jasper's squeaky clean reputation is inexplicably tarnished, Jana is determined to keep a low profile. Unfortunately when she is approached in the supermarket, by a man resembling something from a video game, it becomes virtually impossible. No, he's not part of some new promotion. He's come specifically to find Jana. He claims to be that "imaginary" boy that had ruined Jana for other men. He had never forgotten her and had worked his way up through the coalition ranks with the single minded purpose of saving Jana and her world. Now Earth had reached the top of the Coalition's acquisition list, and to make matters worse, an assassin had been sent to make sure Cavin of Far Star never accomplishes his mission. So much for keeping a low profile! Now insanely in love and on the run, can the pair get to area 51 in time to save the planet?

What fun! This book is an emotional roller coaster with multiple elements of fantasy, humor, romance, intrigue, suspense, and a wonderfully strong family foundation without which the pair would have had no chance for success. Amazing! Your Planet or Mine? is a magical near-future adventure that is not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Funny science fiction story!.......2007-02-17

California State Senator Jana Jasper credited the "glowing boy" she saw at age 9 as being an imaginary friend. After all, visitors from other planets just don't exist. However, when Cavin Far Star returns to Earth to warn Jana of an impending takeover, Jana remembers the boy she dubbed "Peter". Cavin wants to meet Jana's leaders, but Jana's family is currently under a vicious political attack so her clout is at an all time low. Meanwhile, a Terminator-like assassin wants Cavin dead. Can Jana and Cavin save Earth?

YOUR PLANET OR MINE? is a humorous foray into the science fiction realm. Susan Grant knows this genre well and she takes full advantage of all of the science fiction cultural icons already established, such as the connection to the Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator movies. Jana's habit of creating short, pithy Weekly World News style tabloid headlines is particularly catchy and provides some wonderful comic relief during some of the tense action scenes.

YOUR PLANET OR MINE? requires the reader to suspend a great deal of disbelief, which ordinarily is a bit harmful to books in this genre. However, Susan Grant's tongue in cheek approach to the entire looming alien invasion makes this quirky story work. YOUR PLANET OR MINE? is an out of this world adventure!

I really had a good time with this read. I was tired, depressed and picked this up because it look like it might be fun. It was. I laughed. At the end, my face hurt from smiling so much. Yes, it's different than her other book. Only show just what a super talent Susan Grant is. Cannot wait for the next silly aliens loves earth girl book.

5 out of 5 stars Grant delivers on all levels.......2006-11-16

People sadly do judge books by covers and often they like to "brand" authors. I hear that buzz word pushed about in writing circles all the time now, and author must brand themselves to be a hit. Well, being one who likes the off the beaten path, I think of branding as stereotyping. Hey, didn't George Reeve supposedly kill himself because he was stereotyped as Superman? In Hollywood stereotyping kills acting careers. So I fear "branding" in Romance writing can box readers into expecting `the same' from a writer. Everyone gripes when a writer does formula. Yet when a savvy author, such as Grant, changes channels, they run headlong into a wall of "this isn't like her other books. Well, duh? It's call being fresh, original, daring to go where no man...hum...woman has gone before! I say BRAVA!!! Grant has shown she can think outside of her brand X box, and give you a whole new Grant, and I think this only showcases the range of her talent. BRAVA!!

The Coalition Space Force has earth slotted for acquisition. Cavin, a high ranking military officer with CSF comes to warn Jana of the takeover, which causes the lass problems. Jana comes from a prominent California family and is now a State Senator. Such people just don't go around nattering to Aliens! Only, Jana's "relationship" with this particular `Man Who Fell to Earth' goes back to when she was nine and rescued Cavin who had gotten stuck in a tree outside her bedroom window. Jana was mute until Cavin kissed her as a thank you for the rescue. Now over 20 years later, Cavin is returning the favour of rescue by cluing up Jana about Earth's pending fate.

As you can imagine this `Mindy' isn't too happy `Mork' has arrived bearing "you are doomed" news. She has troubles aplenty without this! Someone has made her and her family a target of a smear campaign aimed at seeing Jana removed from office.

I see "reality check" people putting this down. Hey, this is FUN. This is a lighter side of Grant's talent we have not seen before, proving she is not a one trick pony. I for one applaud her taking a new venue for her prose and thoroughly enjoy the charming read. It's sharp, it's engaging, it's fast paced. Grant delivers on all levels!

3 out of 5 stars PASS THE CHEESECAKE.......2005-08-29

This is a great book for one reason: Cheesecake!

This is the story of a young model, Ai Ijima (who in real life was a sexy model) who falls through a dimensional rift with her buumbling camera crew and has all kinds of adventures throughout history. Think DR. WHO with boobs!

Every story features lots of sexy outfits, or sexy outfits falling off of our heroine as she meets all kinds of historic figures. Although it's kind of risque at parts, overall it's all in good fun and there's certainly nothing hardcore or offensive about it.

Ultimately TIME TRAVELER AI is a good fun read, suitable for fans of HEAVY METAL comics.

4 out of 5 stars really good!.......2007-01-11

I have just finished this book and then all of the others as of 2/07 by the same author. I very much enjoyed them all despite the fact that these are not the type of books I regularly read. I do read time travel books (love Jack Finney), but this was more of a romance novel, too. And, I'm not usually one for romance novels where one meets their undying forever love and has very hot erotic sex. But, for some reason, this book and her others were just completely entertaining.

These stories are more plot-driven than character driven. They aren't 'literary' by any means, yet the stories are a lot of fun.

These novels could definitely use some better editing. The author uses the word 'passed' incorrectly throughout the series, rather than the correct "past" (and considering they go to into the past, you will see this mistake quite a bit). There are numerous misspellings, too. In one of the books, there is the symbol (?sp) next to a difficult-to-spell name of a lake. Worst of all, there are many grammatical errors such as incorrect use of commas. All of these errors do detract a bit from the books and, after the first one or two books were published with so many mistakes, one has to wonder why the author didn't bother to get a new proofreader or editor.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT START to a Series!!.......2006-03-09

This book is a great read if you are looking for something light to breeze through!! I read my copy in 2 days and I have three kids, three dogs and one husband so it is not like I have a lot of extra time. The story is sweet and romantic. You do have to stretch your imagination a little bit and overlook a few things but don't you with all time travel books? I highly recommended this book!! I just started the second one and can't wait to read all the other books in this series!! Thank you Hollie Van Horne for a great story and a great time traveler series to keep my up late at night!!

2 out of 5 stars So-So..........2004-05-07

As an avid reader of time travel novels, I have read enough of them to know a quality book. While the main characters -- Chuyler and Trudy -- are lovable and endearing, I found the dialogue rather choppy and artifical. In addition, the suddenness at their falling in love from the beginning of the story threw me for a loop.

I found it odd how Trudy adapted so comfortably and quickly to the fact that she was 100 years in the past. Imagining myself experiencing such an unexpected turn of events, I don't think I would have handled the event so lightly. I also did not find Chuyler's quick acceptance of Trudy's time travel tale very believable. I think the author should have played out the time travel bit a while longer, to add to the possibility of it all.

Finally, I thought the kidnap scene toward the end of the book was a final, desperate attempt at making the story attention-grabbing. I couldn't wait to finish the book.

If you like fluffy time travel books, that covers storylines on the surface, this is the perfect book for you.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A WAY TO GET HOOKED.......2003-02-07

Even though this was actually the third book written in the series, Hollie Van Horne, had such a sense of continuity, she made it the first in the series, having all the details and relationships follow perfectly.

Romance writer accidentally falls through a time portal into the 1890's. Finds love and romance. Sets the background for the new Time Travelers Inc. company to be formed, for future time travel. It's a fantasy, but yet could it be real?

Hollie Van Horne sure makes you think so. I recommend buying all 6 books, reading them in a row, and continuing with all the new ones to come. The plot premise of the Time Travelers Series, leaves endless options for future books.

Become friends with Sam and Jim Cooper, Bruce Wainwright, and all the characters that you will travel with in all the books.

5 out of 5 stars The best time travel-romance series on the market.......2002-06-02

I had read one or two time travel romance novels before and was vaguely interested in them. Then I met Hollie at a booksigning and decided to read the first one in the series and if I liked it, I would buy the rest of the books. This book made me feel as if I had gone into the past. When I was finished with the book, I just sat there waiting to come back to reality. I felt like I had gone on this journey to the past and now I was coming home. Landing. I was on-line in less than an hour buying the rest of the series. Now, I can't read any other time travel book because they just don't make me feel like I went there the way her book did. I will never forget Trudy or Cuyler.

The travel bug knows no limits of age or gender, and neither should travel literature. In Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure, writer and illustrator Don Brown tells the story of an intrepid young woman and her 59-day drive across America in 1909. As Brown soon makes clear, Alice Ramsey's journey was no mean feat--for one thing, the roads were poor, there were no road signs, and there was only one guidebook for motorists--the Blue Book, which contained directions such as "Turn left at the red barn with the yellow silo..." Excellent directions as long as the farmer hadn't repainted the silo blue.

Accompanied by her friend Hermine and her two sisters-in-law, Alice Ramsey made her way west, fording flooding streams and muddy roads and facing mechanical failures, terrible weather, and other obstacles both natural and manmade until at last she entered San Francisco to a grand parade. Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventurehas drama, humor, suspense--in short, all the qualities one looks for in travel literature--and charming illustrations as well, guaranteed to appeal to young travelers-in-the-making.

Book Description

Don Brown introduces us to yet another little-known heroine. On June 9, 1909, twenty-two-year-old Alice Ramsey hitched up her skirts and climbed behind the wheel of a Maxwell touring car. Fifty-nine days later she rolled into San Francisco, becoming the first woman to drive across America. What happened in between is quite a tale! Through words and pictures, the author shares this story of a brave and tenacious young woman who followed her vision to conquer the open road - even when the road was nothing more than a wagon trail. Alice Ramsey's adventure offers a unique perspective on turn-of-the-century America and pays tribute to the pioneering spirit that helped create it.

5 out of 5 stars Hard as it was, Alice Came Through.......2005-05-05

Alice Ramsey of Hackensack, New Jersey was twenty-two years old in June of Nineteen Nine, when she started out on her trip driving trip across America with her two sisters-in-law and her friend Hermine as passengers. Narrow roads, dirt roads and roads that were barely there at all challenged them, as did mud, rivers and mountains. And when the car broke Alice was the one who had to get it working again. One has to remember that though this trip was a bit less than a century ago, this was an amazing feet. Women didn't have the vote, were considered much to gentle for such a task and many didn't think Alice would come through, but come through she did, making the trip in fifty-nine days.

This is a super book with out of sight illustrations by Mr. Brown. My young son loves the pictures and when he's old enough to really understand the story, he's going to love Alice Ramsey as we read along about her grand adventure. Three thumbs up at my house. One from young Devon, One from Mommy Sara and one from me.

5 out of 5 stars Here is a Road Trip where you can admire the women.......2004-06-16

No doubt young readers will be struck by the idea that on June 9, 1909 a twenty-two-year-old woman named Alice Ramsey made a name for herself by becoming the first woman to drive across America in an automobile. After all, the thought that this achievement would be a big deal should strike this as being somewhat odd. But one of the things that "Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure" does is remind its readers what life was like at the turn of the last century, especially if you happened to be a woman (after all, women could not yet vote in the United States).

Told and illustrated with watercolor paintings by Don Brown, "Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure" makes it clear why this fifty-nine day trip, which began on June 9, 1909, was something akin to something done by pioneers the century before. After all, Alice did this trip traveling with her friend and her sisters-in-law, and the only one who knew anything about automobiles was Alice. The car was a Maxwell touring car, which had a top speed of 42 miles per hour and where you had to light the headlamps with a match. To make things even more interesting there were no road signs, many roads were for horses rather than automobiles, and the only guidebook that existed for motorists only covered the eastern part of the country.

What is fascinating here are the details, the problems both big and small, that Alice Ramsey faced while driving across the country in her Maxwell. After all, this trip took place less than a century ago, which makes "Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure" a great example of those tales about the Olden Days when you can really tell how different things were way back then. If young readers were to think about what they could do today that would be in the same spirit, if not the same scale, as what Alice Ramsey did, it would be interesting to see what they might come up with to rival this road trip.

5 out of 5 stars Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure.......2002-11-01

A wonderful introduction to the conditions of the roads for the early travelers by car in America. Because of their determination, our roads were improved and the automobile industry flurished. A great way to make children and adults aware of the history of the early automobiles and how people like Alice Ramsey believed in them. The geography lessons lend themselves to great mapping activities.

5 out of 5 stars Alice Ramsey, Pioneer.............2002-09-25

"On June 9, 1909, Alice Ramsey drove out of New York City and into a grand adventure. Alice Ramsey wanted to be the first woman to drive across America. Alice's friend, Hermine, and her sisters-in-law, Nettie and Margaret, traveled with her..." So begins Don Brown's marvelous story of a little known young woman and her dream. Mr Brown's engaging and informative text, told in an easy to read conversational style, is filled with enlightening details about how the trip progressed over its 59 day period. Pigs clogged the road in Illinois, and railroad tracks slowed them down in Chicago and "...the car bounced over mile after mile of rail until the women were dizzy." Dirt roads became muddy and impassable when it rained, and as they traveled further west, there were no roads at all. "Alice followed telephone lines, hoping the wires would lead her to the next town. It wasn't always successful-sometimes it left them even more lost." And there were many mishaps and breakdowns along the way. But as she crested the Sierra Mountains, Alice knew she was now in California and close to her goal. "Alice guided the Maxwell onto a ferry that carried them to San Fransisco. When she rolled off the ferry behind the wheel of her Maxwell, Alice Ramsey became the first woman to have driven across America! It was August 7, 1909, Fifty-nine days had passed since Alice left New York City." Charming watercolor illustrations add just the right touch, and highlight the important events of the story. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure is an inspiring tale, told by a gifted storyteller, that is sure to whet the appetite of adventurous readers and send them out looking for more.

Luminous watercolors and a straightforward writing style serve to enchant the reader without over-romanticizing a true story. I look forward to more by this author.

    Book Description

In 1870, an eight-year-old girl named Mary Kingsley lived in a small house on a lonely lane outside London, England. Her mother was bedridden and her father was rarely home. Mary did not go to school. She served as housekeeper, handyman, nursemaid, and servant, for years. In 1893 Mary traveled to West Africa and proceeded to embark on an astonishing journey of discovery. In her high-necked blouse, long skirt, and Victorian boots, she endured the brutal heat and hardships of Africa, and thrived. With luminous watercolors and a lively text, Don Brown tells the fascinating story of a most uncommon woman.

    4 out of 5 stars Fascinating........2006-11-05

This was read and enjoyed by all five members of our family (ranging in age from 5 to 40+). It sparked interesting conversations about the Congo region and the plausability of Mary's stories (could you really scratch a hippo with an umbrella?). This book also prompted the two adults of the family to find a copy of Mary Kingsley's own biography to read.

    4 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2005-09-23

The Uncommon Traveler was written and illustrated by Don Brown. Don Brown was a professional illustrator. According to the School Library Journal, they called him " a current pacesetter who has put the finishing touches on the standards for storyographies." Don Brown's first book was RUTH LAW THRILLS A NATION.
This book is a non-fiction picture book, as well as a historical realism. This book is set in the past, an event, which is Mary's exploration of Africa. This book explains Mary Kingsley's childhood that gives her the courage and motivation for her travels to Africa. Mary is a heroic woman, who shows her strength throughout the book. This book describes her adventures in Africa, which she traveled alone and not listening to the warnings from others. This books also shows that dreams do come true and that you can
achieve your dreams, no matter what obstacles that you come across.
While growing up, Mary never attended school or never played with other children. Even though, Mary was alone, she was still happy. Mary mentioned, "I had a great, amusing world of my own: the books in Father's Library." These books as mentioned in the book were her companions and teachers, since she was housebound. At the age of thirty, Mary was free from her duties, when her parents passed away. Growing up, Mary had read books about her father's adventures and inspired by her father's journeys, and the books that she had read, Mary wanted to travel to Africa.

5 out of 5 stars Mary Went to Africa When Others Stayed Home.......2005-05-05

Like he did with his other wonderful children's books about Mary Anning, Alice Ramsey and Ruth Law, interesting, fascinating and heroic women all, Mr. Brown takes a brave woman most people have never heard of and turns her story into an inspiring tale that will lift the heart of all children from four to eighty-four. Englishwoman Mary Kingslely had been virtually house bound nursing her ill mother, even denied school, but when her parents passed away in her thirtieth year she was finally free, so to speak. She'd spent much of her life reading travel books in her father's library and it was travel she wanted to do. She settled on the idea of going to West Africa, a place unheard of for a single woman to go. But wearing her proper Victorian clothes, high necked, long sleeved shirt with a heavy skirt that almost hit the ground, she set out and had many adventures in West Africa.

This is a book about adventure and I try to point that out to my almost three-year-old son Devon. He is a bit young for the book, but his mother and I feel that books are the lifeblood of a child's future and we surround him with them. Books, books and more books for our son and this is one of the better ones. He will be learning to read with it.

5 out of 5 stars Mary Kingsley and her adventures........2005-02-01

The beginning of this book looks rather gloomy for Mary, eventhough she seems quite happy while she performs all of her many duties. "Mary's narrow life as handyman, nursemaid, servant, and aide went on for days, for weeks, for years" (Brown). After the death of her parents Mary was free to travel. She had been "inspired by her father's journeys and the travel books she loved" this inspired her to travel to West Africa (Brown). She saw and participated in many different things during her trip. Once she returned from Africa she wrote about her journey and shared it with others. This children's picture book is an excellent source for libraries to have. Children can read about the different culture and adventures that Mary experienced.

4 out of 5 stars Uncommon Traveler Mary Kingsley in Africa: an inspiring book.......2005-01-31

This book written by Don Brown is a wonderful children's book. In this story, set in 1870, Mary Kingsley uses her childhood to motivate her travels to Africa. Mary begins the story as a child, who is taking care of her ill mother. Her father travels a lot, and is rarely home. Although Mary never attended school she loves to read and uses this to escape. Mary, now an adult travels to Africa which was a big accomplishment for a woman at that time. The book tells some of her experiences in Africa. Without revealing what happens at the end, I will tell you that Mary has many experiences in this children's book. She takes the reader through her life. The illustrations in the book help the reader visualize Mary's life. This is not my favorite children's book, but I would highly recommend this book to any parent or child. It kept my interest and it is sure to keep yours.

4 out of 5 stars How Do You Fill The Hours in the Family Car? .......2006-08-03

During family car trips, children are notorious for asking the perennial question, "How much longer until we get there?" Now whether you are shuttling kids to a soccer game or on a long cross-country car vacation with the family, here's a valuable resource to turn your hours on the road into a valuable learning experience.

JOY RIDE!, FAITH-FILLED FUN AND GAMES FOR DRIVETIME by Jaqueline Lederman (Tyndale House Publishers) is a part of the Heritage Builders series. Targeted for all ages of children, this book is packed with ideas. As the author writes, "The goal of this book is to provide families with a good Christian growth resource for use in the car." The information is divided into three sections: games, discussion starters and Bible challenges.

The travel games help children learn new information and also use creative thinking to stretch children spiritually. As for keeping score, the author suggests you do what works for your child. If scoring and prizes motivate the child to play, then use it. The discussion starters contain several sections--jump start (to set the scene for discussion), speeding up (follow-up questions to continue the discussion), look at the map (a Bible verse to bring it into the conversation) and travel plan (the personal application section where children relate it to their lives). The final section, Bible Challenge, has three levels of difficulty: Easy, Moderate and Hard. No matter which type of question, the answers are included in the book and everyone in the family can increase their Bible knowledge from these challenges.

The author includes a caution in the introduction to this book, "You are wise not to make every trip in the car into a Bible learning time, and not to make every game or discussion end with a pointed moral lesson. Use your drivetimes to develop your relationships with your children and find out how they are doing, how their friends are, what they're up to, and so on."

This tool has potential for overuse but can be invaluable for every family with the right balance. When you're planning the next stint in the car, pull this small title from your glove compartment.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2001-08-24

It's July! Pack the car with baggage, food, and the kids. Head for fun and relaxation. But first, prepare for the hours on the road. Make the most of the time with Joy Ride; Faith-filled Fun & Games for Drivetime by Jacqueline Lederman. The games, discussion starters, and Bible challenges will enable you to interact happily with your children. As an added bonus, even you may learn new information (Oh yeah - it might be a good idea to bring your Bible along on the trip.)

For ease of use, the author has indexed activities by interest, trip destination, and topic. Plan to stick this paperback book in your glove compartment before you leave on vacation.
