Book Description
The twelve billion dollar cruise-ship industry caters to 10 million Americans annually on six- hundred million dollar floating cities.
In this terrifically entertaining history, Kristoffer A. Garin chronicles the cruise-ship industry, from its rise in the early sixties, to its explosion in the seventies with the hit show The Love Boat, to the current vicious consolidation wars and brazen tax dodges. Entrepreneurial genius and bare-knuckle capitalism mate with cultural kitsch as the cruise lines dodge U.S. tax, labor, and environmental laws to make unimaginable profits while bringing the world a new form of leisure.
A colorful and compelling behind-the-scenes narrative, Devils on the Deep Blue Sea is a definitive look at the industry and its robber barons who created floating empires.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Perspective on the Cruise Business.......2007-09-17
I found this book to be a very enjoyable read. It takes you beyond the marketing collateral of the cruise lines to the full story behind the industry's birth and development. The book is a wonderful narrative of the industry's short and eventful life. The author is fairly even handed in his treatment but there are times when you can sense when he likes or dislikes his subjects.
The author's assessment of the cruise line labor policies, environmental record and negotiation with Caribbean Governments was slanted. His view comes off as wanting the cruise lines to be vehicles of social change rather than commercial enterprises. I think he fairly criticizes the cruise lines for not living up to their environmental rhetoric but if the labor conditions are so bad onboard the ships, why are the positions so prized? If the Caribbean Governments are being abused so badly in their deals with the cruise lines, why do they continue to build larger piers to accomodate more ships?
The best parts of this book deal with the business deals that created the cruise industry and the characters that were involved. I have cruised for years and reading this book gave me a better perspective on the strategies and coincidences that shaped the industry. A good read!
Great fun!.......2007-05-27
Travel agents and veteran cruisers alike will get a big kick out of this book.
It's a behind the scenes look that pulls no punches but manages to remain affectionate. Garin simply proves that you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. I certainly hope it doesn't discourage any non-cruisers from taking the plunge.
My favorite bit: Carnival's Meshulam Zonis' line, "A passenger is like a wet towel," which he illustrated by hand motions that wordlessly said, "First we squeeze them this way, then we squeeze them that way."
War ships/tankers to cruise ships....Oh My!!!.......2007-04-25
In the first chapter, Garin writes of the last day on a cruise ship which any cruiser knows is every man, woman and child for themselves....no longer are passengers royalty but more like refugees! He captures the irony of the debarking day that has always made my family chuckle as we tell stories of things we see on that last day! E.g. one poor passenger's luggage broke open outside an elevator...not one steward or other crew member offered assistance....they walked right over his strewn belongings. Anyway, Garin knows cruises and gives a wonderful history of the makings/history of the cruise industry from its humble beginnings to the big business it is today (and the two major cruise lines left). I was particularly fascinated with the evolution of the ships themselves! This was an easy read (and if a portion got dry....I skimmed!). I am cruising in 17 days...will do so with even more appreciation for the experience!
If your cruise reservation is non-refundable...don't read this book.......2007-02-06
I picked this up after enjoying his Harper's article "On the great Ukrainian bride hunt". His writing style and my interest in critical looks at the evolution and externalities of specific industries (a la Fast Food Nation) made this an amusing & informative read. And the long odds that I'd ever go on a cruise got even longer.
An even treatment with a fascinating storyline..........2006-09-03
Being a vacationer who has been on numerous cruises, this book recommendation looked like a certain fit... Devils On The Deep Blue Sea by Kristoffer A. Garin. He does a very good job in revealing how the cruise industry works, and the forces that have shaped it along the way.
The story starts in the late 1950's, when the cruise industry was really nothing more than a way to transport passengers from one location to another. The rich often had a lavish experience, while the "steerage" passengers were cramped and confined to the lower decks with restrictions on where they could go and what they could do. But in both cases, it was still a case of traveling from point A to point B. The airline industry quickly made cruise ships obsolete for rapid travel, and the shipping lines were becoming a footnote in history. But a few people thought that cruising could become a destination in itself, a way to vacation, see other lands, and then return to where you started. But the appeal had to be broad, and the luxuries of first class had to extend to all the passengers. Thru visionaries, financial risks, and mergers, what we have today is a $13 billion dollar industry that is truly global in numerous aspects. But behind the glitter and glamour, there are some less appealing items of interest...
Garin talks about how the cruise industry is largely staffed by impoverished workers from third-world nations who sign on for low base wages and whatever tips come from passengers. To many of us, these base wages wouldn't even support poverty, but they are considerable in the countries where the workers come from. The hours and rules aboard ship are harsh, with 12 to 16 hour days with little time off the norm. The industry also pays little in the way of taxes due to their ship registration being out of country to take advantage of international treaties preventing retaliatory fees. The laws and rights of the United States are not always in play either, as the ship is actually foreign territory. And if that's not enough, many of the tourist destinations are unable to get additional fees from the industry to support their infrastructure, as the industry will threaten to pull out of the port and destroy their tourism. It can be capitalism at its worst...
Personally, this book was better than I expected. I thought it was going to be a muck-raking, "boycott cruises" diatribe, and one that I wouldn't necessarily agree with. But the balance between the story of the cruise lines and the less-savory parts of the industry was just about right. And even the "expose" part wasn't hypercritical. I came away understanding the abuses, but (in many cases) understanding both sides of the issues. And really, it's not much different than what most other industries would do in the same circumstances...
Yes, I'm still going to go on cruises, and I'll still enjoy them. But I'll be even more considerate of the staff that makes it all work, and more in awe of what it takes to pull off the experience, week after week after week...

Long lost book.......2007-02-02
I am so happy to have found "The Sailor Dog". I loved it as child so many, many years ago.It never left my mind.I loved the optimistic way of Scruffy and his adventures. The illustrations are still vivid in my memory.
Simply, I fell in love with him and his ways.
Classic Story.......2007-01-28
I loved this story as a child, and purchased it for a books for children drive.
It is about a dog who becomes a sailor and builds a new life. It is a book about adventure for the very young. Perfect for ages 3-6.
Shortened But Still Good.......2007-01-03
The Sailor Dog was my favorite book growing up. I remember it fondly as I looked at the pictures imagining a world where dogs sailed the ocean or flew planes and went on grand adventures. I have ordered the orginal in the past from Amazon for a local book drive and got what I expected. On this recent order which was for our 2 year old who loves both books and dogs I got the Little Golden Book edition. Remember those wonderful small books with the gold spine? This edition, however, was not the same Sailor Dog of my childhood. It is an edited version without some of the pages. If you are looking for the original, keep looking. Otherwise this is a fun book.
Not so golden.......2006-12-04
The Little Golden Book edition of this wonderful story does it an injustice: not all the pages from the original are included, and those that are are reduced in size. Try and find the original if you can.
I loved this book 50 years ago and was thrilled to find it.......2003-01-06
This book spoke to my soul as a little child (in the 1950s) - dreams of making it on my own, seeing the world, being adventurous. For years I looked for it, not remembering who it was by or the name. What a thrill to find it now and to be able to buy it for my friends' children and grandchildren! Thank you to Golden Books for bringing this back. But please give us an edition with all the illustrations and copy!

Book Description
The potential of energy resources in the Caspian region (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) has attracted much attention since the demise of the Soviet Union. Many industry analysts in the United States and other developed nations consider oil supplies from the Caspian a strong alternative to the Persian Gulf, and believe that a new reliance on its resources can reduce the perennial Western vulnerability to price increases and threatened cutoffs. But is the region capable of fulfilling that role? The relatively low demand for natural gas worldwide, the transitory and often perilous political situation in the Caspian, and the uncertainty regarding the region's oil-producing capabilities in general make estimates of its potential to alleviate energy demands seem dubious. Maureen Crandall's revealing study of relevant economic and security issues clearly separates what can and cannot be expected from this strategically important, yet politically unstable region. In addition to examining the complex issues of cause and effect surrounding Caspian oil supply, Crandall examines the interests of neighboring states (Russia, Iran, and China), as well as those of the United States in the global search for resources. Figures, tables, and a bibliography complete a study that will prove of vital interest to regional security specialists, defense economists, energy analysts, environmentalists-and anyone else interested in Central Asia and the future of America's energy supplies.

Customer Reviews:
A fine way to while away an afternoon reading aloud.......2007-05-21
This book tells in rhyming verse the story of a boy and his dog glorying in an adventure-filled day at sea. The small, orange-haired narrator and his dog, Skipper start out with a toy boat in a backyard wading pool. Then the boy's imagination runs amok, and he and Skipper set sail. They encounter a sea monster, a deserted island, and a band of pirates, and eventually sail home on the back of a helpful porpoise. The story celebrates imagination and adventure.
The rhyming text is catchy, and should appeal to younger children, making it easy from them to predict the end of the next line. Heidbreder is not afraid to use grown-up words from time to time, too, as in this exchange:
I shimmied the rigging
To the crow's nest.
I skimmed the deep blue
From east to west.
I like the internal parallel of "shimmied" and "skimmed". On an earlier page, he writes: "A ship came billowing by." It's beautiful. At first I thought that some of the rhymes were too simple. But they resonated in my head long after I had closed the book, and I've concluded that the poetry is actually quite powerful. Here's another example:
Up popped a porpoise.
It offered a ride.
We bobbed through the drink
As it swam with the tide.
The colorful gouache illustrations (like watercolor, but with more pigment) spill from each page, as though Denton's enthusiasm can't quite be contained. Gouache is the perfect medium to capture the colors of the ocean. I especially enjoyed the "rogue wave", a gloomy face made from a fall of water. Other pictures share sly little jokes with the discerning reader, too. For example, when boy and dog are escaping from the pirates, the boy thumbs his nose, while the chief pirate looks positively surly. The sea monster's foul smell is also fully demonstrated through the pictures, adding depth to the words.
Reading A Sea-Wishing Day aloud would be a fine way for any parent and pre-schooler to while away an afternoon hour. This is a book that will improve upon multiple readings, become a long-time favorite.
This book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on May 20, 2007.

William Smythe, a Southern California booster, was not alone when in 1900 he expressed his hope that "the great brown waste which lies on the borders of two republics... will some time be as densely populated as the lands of the Nile, as rich in industry as the Kingdom of Holland."
A century later, the coastal desert of Southern California has indeed become a rich and populous place. The interior desert, however, along the U.S.-Mexico border, is as empty and poor as ever. Historian William deBuys and photographer Joan Myers explore that country, its virtual capital the salt-choked Salton Sea, in the pages of this fine book, which offers a deeply learned but readable study of the politics of water and land use in the arid Southwest. DeBuys remarks that for Europeans and Americans the land has always seemed a geographic tabula rasa, subject to making and remaking, a landscape in which dreams can come true--one of them being to remake an unforgiving desert into an agricultural treasure house. Those dreams, however, can turn into nightmares, as speculations fail and dunes reclaim what is rightfully theirs--for, as deBuys notes, "in low places consequences collect." Desert rats and students of California history will find many rewards in these pages. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
In low places consequences collect, and in all North America you cannot get much lower than the Imperial Valley of southern California, where one town, 186 feet below sea level, calls itself the Lowest Down City in the Western Hemisphere, and where the waters of the Colorado River sustain a billion-dollar agricultural industry. The consequences of that industry drain from the valley into the accidentally man-made Salton Sea, California's largest lake and a vital stopping place for migratory waterfowl. Today the Salton Sea is in desperate environmental trouble.
A second river also ends in the Salton Sea. It is a river of dreams, the remains of which may be seen in the failed real estate developments that sprawl beside the sea. As the ending point of both the real Colorado and this river of dreams, the Salton Sea has become emblematic of much of the history of the American West. Its troubling story is masterfully told here in William deBuys's narrative and Joan Myers's austerely beautiful photographs.
The story of Southern California is fundamentally a story about the control of nature. Beginning with the Yuman-speaking tribes encountered by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, deBuys traces the subsequent exploration and development of the region through the Gold Rush of 1849, the government-sponsored surveys that followed, and the inept tinkering with the river by an assortment of irrigation and development interests that resulted in the floods that formed the Salton Sea nearly a century ago. He introduces us to a gallery of rogues and dreamers who saw a great future for this arid wilderness but could never refrain from interference with the forces of nature.
The floods that produced the Salton Sea created a vast desert oasis, but the agricultural exploitation of the region, combined with evaporation, poisoned that paradise. The stark beauty of the desert, the engineering feats that have transformed the landscape, and the eerie spectacle of Salton City and its ruined beaches and abandoned yacht club are the subject of Myers's photographs, made over a period of more than ten years. In the last section of Salt Dreams, deBuys acquaints us with the human and avian denizens of the region, all struggling for survival as the twentieth century draws to a close. The history of chicanery and greed recounted in deBuys's narrative and his empathy with the desert dwellers he and Myers have come to knowhardworking laborers and entrepreneurs who live on both sides of the Mexicali border, eccentrics hiding out in the Salton Desert, pelicans dying of avian botulismare crucial to an understanding of the border issues of today and the impassioned environmental debate on whetherand howto save the Salton Sea.

A history of the Salton Sea, which has become a prophetic story of mounting environmental crises that impinge on the water supply of southern California's sixteen million people.

A Tale of a Magnificent Disaster.......2003-03-11
I visited the Salton Sea to photograph birds and found it impossible to describe, telling friends they had to go there themselves to experience the place and the people. Now I tell them to read this book. From the creation of the Sea to the creation of Salvation Mountain, deBuys tells it's colorful history in a prose that fills you with the sounds and smells and people of the Sea and Imperial Valley. Anyone with an interest in man's unlimited folly, vision, corruption, and the coming environmental train-wreck in southern California needs to read this book.
What Every Member of Congress Should Know..........2002-01-28
Bravo! Salt Dreams is the first of its kind to wrap up all of the issues surrounding the Salton Sea and Colorado River delta in one volume. The best since Cadillac Desert in its cinematic portrayal of a complicated host of issues. Awesome writing on the heroism of US Fish and Wildlife staff. My only criticism is that Congressman George Brown is slighted; Sonny Bono often called him "Mr. Salton Sea". Certainly, a book Mr. Brown would have loved.
Reclamation/Folly in the Desert.......2001-07-10
Superlative read revealing the vast natural beauty of the desert and its inhabitants and man's irreversable errors in judging it as a fallen Eden. Together with Cadillac Desert it ranks as a southwest water classic. Beautiful writing and stunning photographs.

I originally read this series years ago and was thrilled to see in back in print. The series has a great sense of adventure and a fast paced reading style. LOVE THEM!! Get all three in the series!
this was an AWSOME BOOK!!!!.......2005-03-04
okay this book was great i read the first one and was hooked!this is one of my most favorite books.you just want raider and rosie to get together abd then get mad when they don't.it's perfect to read curled up on your couch on a cold fall day w/a blanket and hot cup of hot chocolate(i don't know if i spelled that right).i highly recomend you read this book.
reader.......2004-04-20
I loved these two books!!!! They are one of those books that you can't put down! I loved them.
A REALLY GREAT BOOK.......2002-10-27
Whenever I read reviews, I always want them to tell me the ending. I hate not knowing how books end. I also sometimes read last pages first. In this book, Rosie goes to the place that Raider and Octavia own, called the cove, to help take care of Raider. She is all messed up with her emotions, and doesn't know what to do, because she loves Raider but won't admit it to herself. So you find out what happens. I only gave this book four stars because the other books in the trilogy are much more exciting with more adventure. But other than that it is a great book. For more young adult historical romances check out all Ann Rinaldi's books, Elizabeth Massie's books and Cameron Dokeys' books.
best book ever!!!.......2002-02-16
i just love this book when i read it i just started to melt i just wish that there would be more of these kinds of books
Book Description
The biennial Around Alone yacht race (now known as the 5-Oceans Challenge) is the most thrilling adventure in the world for the sailors passionate enough to undertake it. Among the competitors in 2002 was Derek Hatfield, a former fraud-squad Mountie, whose forty-foot Spirit of Canada had cost him almost everything he had. In this nail-biting account of the race, Adam Mayers brings to life the joys and the agonies of racing alone — and the dreams that drive these men and women to sail around the world solo. Watch for Hatfield when he competes again in 2006.

The riveting story of a fast-paced, around-the-world race .......2006-05-04
Sea Of Dreams: Racing Alone Around The World In A Small Boat, by Adam Mayers is the riveting story of a fast-paced, around-the-world race for the "Around Alone" yacht race. Derek Hatfield in his yacht "Spirit of Canada" raced against twelve others around the world, beginning in New York Harbor, with stops in England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Brazil, and finally ending in Newport, Rhode Island. Sea Of Dreams is an amazing tale and very highly recommended reading, especially for anyone in search of a gripping and nautically inclined true-life story of a fearless pursuit of a dangerous race on the high seas.
Sea of Dreams vs Godforsaken Sea.......2005-08-27
This a great book, about the other solo around the world race. It reads like a thriller and taught me a lot of things I didn't know about solo sailing. Derek Lundy's Godforsaken Sea which was about the 96 Vendee was gripping and so is this one about the 02 Around Alone when the Cdn. Derek Hatfield was rolled over at the Horn and Brad Van Liew who lives in Charleston set new speed records for the race. His race was just as amazing. The other American guy Tim Kent was also a great story, getting stronger and stronger as the race went on.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book to help children "center".......2006-12-03
My children and I did not merely "read" this book; we have "encountered" it several times...This book has become a friend who brings us back to a settled inner soul, grounding us in the connection to nature, to nurturing, to words softly flowing to inner peace shutting out the exterior voices of turmoil. The colorful, gentle artwork draws us in and sets a wonderful mood for being receptive to poetry.
Poetry is not something that children encounter very frequently these days, as they surf the "Net" and use their iPods with all their spare time. They multi-task and rush through life at a rapid pace, too quickly sometimes to savor life. We all do this! I have found my children and I drawn back into a more reflective and appreciative attitude toward the process of living as we read the gently musing poetry about autumn and spring, the story about Great Wolf and poor Little Buddha Baby who is adopted by Great Wolf and sheltered carefully by him from the elements and as the two sing together. In a way, this book shelters us from the elements of a harried lifestyle, if only for a few still moments, and brings us back to the slower pace of life in which loving connection and "having open eyes to see and truly experience" are things which are valued and remembered. It is good to be reminded of these things. I recommend this book to any busy family.
