5 out of 5 stars outstanding and influential early American painter.......2007-06-05

President of the National Academy of Design from 1845 until his death in 1886, Asher Durand had a major influence on American painting in its early, formative years. Durand's influence with his paintings and his writings and work with other can been as second only to Thomas Cole, who was at different times both mentor and competitor to Durand in his long career. Though Cole has the higher reputation, Durand went further in defining the genre of nature painting in this early era, including the Hudson River School, and articulating and exploring its principles, sources, and aims in his writings. A series of nine essays Durand wrote in 1855 for the art journal Crayon: A Journal Devoted to the Graphic Arts, and the Literature Related to Them" are reprinted in the appendix.

One hundred color illustrations of Durand paintings along with more than 80 black-and-white pictures testify to Durand's exceptional touch melding realism and idealism in the nature painting of the first generation of American painters after the United States became an independent nation. "Kindred Spirits," the book's title, is taken from a familiar 1849 Durand painting of the writer William Cullen Bryant and painter Thomas Cole standing on a rock ledge overlooking a valley with a stream running down it. Not only are the two men meant to be seen as kindred spirits representing the brotherly-like love in the new nation, but the two men are meant as well to be seen as kindred spirits with the nature world spreading out around them like an ampitheater. An 1855 painting titled "The First Harvest in the Wilderness" pictures a man working in a field of golden corn or wheat with misty mountains rising around him. In the background is a log cabin with a woman working at something by its doorway. No matter what the subject and scene of a Durand painting, it bathes in an Edenic glow implying being chosen as one of Providence's favorites and boundless promise.

Mostly before he came to the nature painting, Durand did prints, engravings, and drawings too. Forty of these are pictured. "Kindred Spirits" is a full, authoritative study of the life, career, art work, and influence of this leading early-1800's American artist concentrating on his nature paintings.

Book Description

Treating animals just as any healer would treat human beings, Allen Schoen has become one of America’s most celebrated veterinarians. Kindred Spirits shares the transformative power of his remarkable methods, explores how alternative healing is revolutionizing his profession, and, in the tradition of James Herriot, shares heartwarming stories of animals and their caretakers who have deeply enriched each other’s lives. Through moving scenes–such as an ailing German shepherd who fights to stay alive so he can assist and comfort his ailing human companion–Schoen details the ways in which the human-animal bond can provide a wellspring of love and support, and outlines his own special prescription for improving the care we give our animals through adopting simple healing practices at home. A remarkable new synthesis of science and spirit, Kindred Spirits at last reveals the many ways our animal friends can help us lead happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read by everyone.......2007-02-16

So you think you know and understand your pets, especially dogs? Not until you read this wonderful and insightful book can one begin to understand the exceptional love and experiences that dogs bring into our lives. This should be required reading in schools!!!

4 out of 5 stars The World Needs More Dr. Schoens.......2006-06-13

This book is a great primer for people who have an inkling that our relationship with animals runs deep and is often spiritual or even mystical.

Dr. Schoen has given us a one-stop shopping source, with introductions to: alternative medicine for animals, alternatives to commercial pet food, and ways to enrich the human-animal bond through touch, massage, and meditation.

Buy it as a gift for someone whose eyes are opening to the reality that we are all connected and responsible for each other.

4 out of 5 stars For Animal Lovers.......2005-08-04

Allen M. Schoen, D.V.M., M.S., author of "Kindred Spirits" has written a sensitive book that pulled me in from the beginning. I have to confess that I am a person who feels more in touch with animals than than I do with most people. I have enjoyed reading this book so far and would recommend it to any adult who enjoys understanding the complex relationship between man and the animals around us. It is easy to read and full of wonderful anecdotes from the author's experience as a vet.

2 out of 5 stars Dubious information, egotistical tone.......2004-07-08

Dr. Schoen never met a form of "alternative" therapy that he didn't like. I'm all in favor of keeping an open mind and exploring non-traditional forms of healing. On the other hand, I think that your mind shouldn't be so open that your brain falls out. Extraordinary claims should require extraordinary evidence.

Just once, I'd like to hear Dr. Schoen say, "This form of therapy is complete clap-trap. I don't think it works, and it might even be harmful". Instead, Dr. Schoen embraces everything from acupuncture, to Chinese herbs, and all things in between.

And on top of that, the author's tone is one of self-aggrandizement and condescension toward his "less-enlightened" colleagues.

I'm a life-long animal lover and pet owner. I volunteer at the local animal shelter. I really disliked this book.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2003-04-03

This is a wonderful publication on a meaningful subject. I didn't read the book but ordered the abridged cassette tapes. All animal lovers should know about this book or tape and read or listen. Truly one that you'll be glad you bought.

Magic and Murder

When Flint Fireforge, dwarf and metalsmith, receives a wondrous summons from the Speaker of the Sun, he journeys to the fabled elven city of Qualinost. There he meets Tanis, a thoughtful youth born of a tragic union between elf and man. Tanis and Flint, each a misfit in his own way, find themselves unlikely friends.

But a pompous elf lord is mysteriously slain, and another elf soon meets the same fate. Tanis stands accused, and if his innocence cannot be proven, the half-elf will be banished forever. Solving the mystery will be a perilous task. Time is on the murder's side, and he is not finished yet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Elf Land.......2006-11-06

This was a very good book about Tanis Half Elven's childhood and how he met Flint Fireforge, the Dwarf. It gives a lot of information about Tanis, Flint, and the Qualinesti Elves. Tanis is accused of murder and he only has 3 days to find the killer and prove his innocence. It is a fun and exciting read!

4 out of 5 stars A Dragonlance must fan must read!.......2004-09-14

I really do recomment this book. Simply put it is the best the meeting books. An if you really like Tanis and Flint this may be one of the best books in the entire Lance series.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2003-03-30

This is the first book in the Meetings Sextet and occurs prior to Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Flint Fireforge happily settled in the elven land of Qualinost - who would ever believe this? He meets the young half-elf Tanis, and this is where their life-long friendship begins. This is also the start of the collaborative work of the companions of the Chronicles series, and tells part of the story of Flint and Tanis' younger years. I would recommend this book to anyone who really enjoyed the main characters in the Chronicles. The story shares some insights into these two notorious characters.

3 out of 5 stars Good story, but it had a few flaws and a bad climax........2002-10-22

... This book is a real pageturner. I couldn't wait to finally get to a book with some of the Heroes of the Lance. Flint and Tanis have a great relationship. I love reading their interactions. My favorite scenes are of Tanis and Laurana. I know I am a guy, but I do like romance in books! Good story throughout, even though you know who the killer is early on, unless you were a Basketball player from the University of Arkansas. The big problems I did have were that the relationship of Tanis and Laurana is left hanging. I wanted one more scene at the end. The worst part of this book which made me drop it one star is the fact that the ending is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to Scooby Doo. It's really bad. I had all this expectation and it was ruined. Too bad because this could have been a good book.

2 out of 5 stars This series leaves a lot to be desired.......2002-07-21

The Meetings Sextet's have not been what I expected at all. I was really disappointed in the series. Although I will say that it gives you a birds eye view of the humble beginnings of our favorite Heroes and Villans of the War of the Lance, Flint, Sturm, Caramon, et. al. I rated it lowly due to the fact that the stories put me to sleep, rather than keep me in good attention. If you want to know more about the characters it is a must read, if you are not interested do not pick up on the series.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Heart-warming Regency romance.......2007-06-26

Col Jack Caldwell moves in a recently inherited estate just to find out that the young lady next door is the same girl he saved years ago in a mission. Marianne cannot believe her luck when she reencounters her 'Jacques', the brave soldier who helped her and her maid out of France so many years ago. But he is clearly tormented and after she foils an attempted suicide she decides to help him. When Jack finds out that Marianne is accused of being insane (actually she has agorafobia due to the shock she had in France when she lost her family) so her greedy uncle can get her fortune, he is driven to action and they each are forced to face their own demons in order to help the other.

This is as cute as romance goes, with the tormented hero and heroine helping each other overcome their difficulties.

    4 out of 5 stars a riveting read.......2002-11-09

A word of warning: while I really did enjoy reading "Kindred Spirits," quite a bit, I must confess that the novel did drag a bit halfway through the book, and that while (for the most part) I did find myself sympathising with the heroine, Marianne Barnett, I did also find myself growing mildly exasperated with her inability to come to grips with her fears -- and perhaps this was because Allison Lane dwelt a little bit too long (and too often) on this subplot!

Colonel Jack Caldwell, haunted by what happened at Waterloo, and afraid that he had finally succumbed to his family legacy of brutality and cowardice, has decide to try and end his life. However when he finds the spot from which he will hurl his body off, he's interrupted by Miss Marianne Barnett, a young lady he rescued from the horrors of the French Revolution twelve years ago. It appears that Marianne owns and has been living on the estate next to the one he has recently inherited. Now, Marianne has her own share of demons. Twelve years ago, Marianne watched her family die at the hands of a French mob. That, together with the unkindness she experienced at the hands of her remaining family has given her a fear of strangers, and she's spent the past twelve years living in seclusion at her family estate. Now, however, with her trust about to end, Marianne will have full control of her inheritance, and she realises that she will have to learn how to overcome her fears. How she wishes that there was someone she could turn to and confide her fears. And then she sees Jack and recognises him as her valiant rescuer from the past. Realising that she had interrupted a suicide attempt, Marianne quickly decides to confide her fears to Jack, hoping that she will turn his mind from thoughts of death, and that he will, somehow, rescue her again. Will Marianne diversionary tactics work? But little do Jack and Marianne realise that danger comes not from their pasts but from a desperate and unscrupulous relative out to steal Marianne's inheritance, and who will stop at nothing in order to obtain this desired result...

On the whole, "Kindred Spirits" was really good read. Allison Lane has real knack for spinning a good yarn and for providing with us with sympathetic and engaging primary characters. However, while the story did unfold seamlessly for most of the book, once the scene of action changed from the country to London, I did think that things began to lag a bit. I didn't think that there was any good reason why it took until the third chapter from the end for Marianne to confront her detractors and successfully defend her right to run her own estate. Also, while I truly did sympathise with Marianne for all that she gone through (and believe me, she has survived and experienced a great deal of cruelty, brutality and grief), I found myself growing a little impatient with our heroine's reluctance to face her fears. Perhaps it is because this coincided with the sudden bogging down of the storyline? Whatever the reason, I did wish that Marianne had started showing a little more backbone and grit earliar than she did.

On the whole, "Kindred Spirits" was a wonderful read, and one (despite the few niggles) that I would have no trouble recommending.

this book is about the twins first trip to coventry island, their birthplace.it's excellently written.you can almost feel that you're on the island.there are some really sereious parts, like karsh's funeral, the first time cam and alex visit lunasoliel, and the battle with the furies. but, like any other twiches book there are plenty of hilarious parts. like when the twins go to afamily dinner at crailmore and turn their cousin vey into a frog. also, there are chapters where ileana is reading karsh's journal, and you get a peek into the details of an ancient curse.definetley recommended reading.

    5 out of 5 stars T-Witches book #7.......2004-05-05

The book that I read was the series of T-Witches. But the specific book that I read was the seventh book in the series. I absolutely love these books because the story is about twins and I'm a twin. Another reason I like it is because you never know what will happen next then about the witches. The points in the book are very exciting. All the spooky things that happen are very interesting. They capture your eye. The book talked about witches and how they deal with life. It was very interesting to see a day in the life of the witches of Camryn and Alexandra. They deal with special powers they have been given from the day they were born. Like I said before I ABSOLUTELY love these series of books. I would recommend these series to anyone who likes drama, romance, action, witches, and their types of spells and their powers. I hope you consider this book to read. You will love it the first time you open the book. You'll get hooked!

    5 out of 5 stars Kindred Spirits (T*Witches, 7).......2003-07-26

I started reading this books series T*Witches in about January of 2003. I think this is the BEST book series I have ever read. It has romance, adventure, and much, MUCH more! I recomend this book series to people who LOVE to read about witches, spells, mystery, adventure. When I started reading this book series, I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out!!! (This book series is the best series I have ever read. It'll be a BIG waste if you don't read this series.)

    5 out of 5 stars I can't wait for the next one!.......2003-06-02

I've been reading these books since they began and they're the best. I especially loved the seventh book because of what happened in it. It's really mysterious and exciting with a whole new bad guy! It's also in a new setting. For people who like romance and enchantment this is the best book ever! I can't wait to see what will happen to Cam and Alex (incidentally my name is Alexandra!) next. T*WITCHES are the best!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Best Whisky and Liquor Tasting Guide.......2001-02-13

One of the best whisky guides, even though it is diluted with other hard liquors as well. Not as pretty as "Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch" (there are no pictures), it has the better, more complete tasting notes, and user-friendly rating systems for both overall quality and price. Pacult is opinionated and often funny, especially when it comes to the one * liquors: The Borghetti Café Sport Espresso Liqueur (Italy) is "a disaster; one of the singlemost sickening liqueurs I've been within 50 miles of in the last decade." He can see the Licor 43 Liqueur (Spain) "as a useful addition in the kitchen of an imaginative cook; but on its own, it's horrible."

Even the popular Laphroaig 10-year old earns only one * ("...make sure you have a whip and chair handy after opening this beastie. . .") Yet, Pacult is not a curmudgeon, he gives the 15-year old Laphroaig a 3 (out of 5): "There's still oodles of peat, but my nose cavity isn't aflame as it was with the cantankerous 10," and the strong iodine and seaweedy overtones of another Islay Whisky, the Lagavulin 15-Year Old, gets a 4 * recommendation.

Pacult favors Bowmore, Clynelish, Highland Park, Longmore, Macallan, and Springbank as "Scotland's Finest Malt Whisky Distilleries." The 12-Year old Highland Park gets a full 5 * and is praised as a glorious malt...one of my top ten malts without any hesitation; find and hoard at all costs... on the palate...the sherry races to the front just ahead of peat, mild brine, and heather...." The 12-year old Macallan gets 4 * for its nose of spice nectarine, lanolin, tannin, and cream..." and "succulent tastes of ripe blueberry, bell pepper, sweetened coconut, and peppermint." Although I didn't agree with this last description, Pacult, as always, is opinionated, descriptive, and fun to read.

Although Pacult, the editor of "Spirit Journal" magazine, has a special love for Scotch whisky, the book includes similar notes on Brandy, White Spirits (e.g., Rum, Vodka, Gin, Tequila), Liqueurs, and Fortified Wines. Whisky, including single malt, blended, American, Canadian, and Irish varieties, take up about one-fourth of the 468 pages. The book describes briefly the making and appreciation of the liquors, an explanation of the rating system, and a bibliography. For a beautiful and informative "coffee table book" focused exclusively on whisky you might want Michael Jackson's recent volume, for a fun, thorough, and thoughtful guide to liquors, including a wonderful section on whisky, get this one.

    5 out of 5 stars A roadmap for a developing palate........1999-07-12

Ever wondered what that expensive bottle of cognac in the glass case tastes like? Afraid to spend huge amounts of money on fine liquor only to be disappointed. Or perhaps you're looking for the best tasting spirits that fit a more limited budget. In any of those situations, this book is for you.

The book provides exquisitely detailed tasting notes of virtually every form of spirit, and most of the available brands. Some of the notes are almost poetic. Others are quite funny. You definitely get the author's strong opinions, but usually with enough information to make up your own mind. He also explains the different kinds of spirits, their histories, and what they are "supposed" to taste like in a more generic sense. Afterward he gives notes and ratings on a 1 to 5 star scale (sound familiar Amazon.com readers?) for particular bottles. Those he gives the "5 star" designation have NEVER failed to impress me. Sometimes they are surprisingly easy to find and not expensive. Other times they become the objects of a personal quest, which is another fun way to use this book.

The breadth of the material covered is also impressive. Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados, Grappa, Gin, Rum, Vodka, Tequila, Scotch Whiskey, American Whiskey, Irish Whiskey, Canadian Whiskey, Oodles of Liqueuers, Sherry, Madiera, Port, Marsala.... and yes I am leaving a few out. Each of these topics has multiple (sometimes exhaustive) tasting notes within it. My favorites are the sections on Scotch Whiskey, American Whiskey, Cognac and Tequila.

Think of this as a reference book, a guidebook, or a treasure map. In my house it has been all three. If you buy liquor regularly - for yourself, for parties, or as a gift - this book will easily pay for itself. And while my own palate has developed its own particularities since I first read this, I still frequently return to it for new ideas and new experiences.

4 out of 5 stars extremely useful resource.......1999-01-03

Mr. Pacult's no-holds-barred and very opinionated reviews have been extremely helpful to me in selecting spirits that offer great value. I have not been disappointed in his selections.

    4 out of 5 stars Kindred Spirits.......2000-01-18

I was delighted with this charming love story. It was slightly reminiscent of the movie The Enchanted Cottage, with Dorothy McGuire and Robert Young. Brennert takes you on an exciting journey into the fantastic, while maintaining enough realism to make you believe in his world. An exceptional story with a super ending.
