5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing.......2007-06-13

This is an amazing book! While most people may not be able to re-create these parties, you can definitely get ideas from all of them. Take the ideas here and apply them to one or two tables or a small area. The pictures are wonderful and I am amazed at what is done in some of these parties. Would love to have a chance just to walk through one of these!!!!

I love this book. The themes and pictures are great. It's more for the higher end weddings

Subtitled: Inspiration for Creating the Party of Your Dreams

Worried about the upcoming holiday party you have to plan? You (and all your friends) know what Martha would do but it's time to shake things up. The problem is you aren't sure where to start.

Luckily for you, Inspirations by Preston Bailey is available. Preston Bailey is a well-known event planner for Hollywood stars. Recently, he's worked on Oprah's fiftieth birthday celebration and Donald and Melania's wedding celebration.

Ten parties, eight of which are weddings, are photographed and discussed in this book. Locations include Niagra Falls, a Virginia stable that is converted into a wedding chapel and the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each chapter celebrates a different theme. Yes, there are eight weddings covered but each wedding has its own theme, color scheme and something unique to offer. The last chapter provides ways to organize and showcase your dining table.

This book dazzles with its full-size color photographs. It celebrates colors, flowers and the unexpected. Reading this book was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon as there are a lot of things to ooh and aah over. Two of my favorite are pineapples made out of sunflowers and a dog made out of dogwood flowers.

Bailey's philosophy is you aren't just throwing a party, you are creating a theatrical event for your guests. It's important to pay attention to the details so your guests will know they are in for a wonderful, magical night. Some examples of small but important details that Bailey uses are: a wedding menu made out of edible chocolate, displaying sculptures that support the party's theme and embellishing cloth napkins with silk roses.

This book is not a "how to" because there aren't any step-by-step instructions. Rather, it's designed to be a "how about this idea" book. It's a peek into Bailey's creative process.

Bailey finds inspiration in nature, artwork and the various cities he has visited. He doesn't want you to simply copy his ideas but he wants you to use this book as a springboard for your imagination and personal style.

Armchair Interview says feeling ambitious and daring? Incorporate Bailey's suggestions into your celebrations.

4 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring.......2006-07-17

This book is certainly not a how to book. It is most definately a coffee table book showing off the talents of Mr. Bailey & his design team.
They are very good at what they do.
I use this book as my design inspirational bible and have produced some great, one of a kind arrangements for weddings and parties.
It is a pity that the author decided against sharing his knowledge. This book could have been a great best seller had he offered up some basic design techniques.
Though I love the book, everytime I thumb through it, I ask myself - who was the intended audience?

Book Description

"What's for dinner?"

If the sound of those three words sends you reeling or, worse, straight to the nearest fast-food chain or take-out joint, then relax. Dream Dinners will change all that forever.

With their new cookbook, Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna, founders of Dream Dinners, bring the successful philosophy behind their hundreds of assemble-and-freeze-meal stores across America into home kitchens. Dream Dinners offers up one hundred recipes for flavorful meals made with easy-to-find ingredients.

The premise is simple: Scoop or pour ingredients into baking pans or plastic bags, then store the uncooked dishes in the freezer. Later in the week or month, when dinnertime rolls around, just pop one of the frozen meals into the oven. Each recipe is provided two ways: One, prepare just one meal for the night, or two, prepare enough for three meals and freeze the other two. Dinner after sports practice, music lessons, and play rehearsals has never been easier!

In addition to recipes for hearty, family-pleasing classics such as Baked Pesto Ravioli with Chicken, Beef and Zucchini Casserole, and Cider-Braised Pork Loin Chops, Stephanie and Tina give a wealth of time-saving shopping tips and cooking pointers. More than for convenience, eating dinner together provides benefits for the whole family. Study after study shows that mealtime matters. Families who dine together form stronger bonds, and kids get better grades and develop lifelong healthful eating habits. Dream Dinners makes it easy for families to gather around the dinner table and share the ups and downs of the day.

With Dream Dinners, you will spend less time stressing in the kitchen and more time connecting with family and friends.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-09-27

I purchased this cookbook hoping it would have some of their wonderful recipes offered at any Dream Dinner location. I was sadly mistaken. These recipes seem to be old family favorites, and not the delicious meals created by the expert Chef's at Dream Dinners. I did however, find 5-10 recipes that I will try. You've probably seen most of the recipes in here, only they put their own little twist on it. Overall, its not a horrible cookbook, just not what I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Good, could be better.......2007-08-25

I overall like the book. I thought it could have been better. It seems they are trying to come off as more gourmet, not as family friendly. But it has a well-deserved spot on my shelf.

1 out of 5 stars I just wasted a lot of money..........2007-08-17

I am pretty upset. I just ordered a brand new cookbook, followed the recipe for a triple batch of the artichoke chicken casserole (which was about $50 worth of supplies. I knew better...I knew there was no way that 1 1/2 cups of uncooked rice would be able to reconstitute with the amount of liquid in the sauce. But, I trusted the book. What a disaster. I am about to call Papa John's. Here is the corrected cookbook (sorry, I didn't think to check for corrections since I just bought the book).

Woops, there are 45 PAGES OF CORRECTIONS!!!! Seriously? How did this book make it through to publishing? Whoever edited it should be fired. If you go to the dream dinners website there is a link with all of the corrections.

5 out of 5 stars A Working Mom's Best Friend.......2007-06-24

Dinner preparation has never been faster nor easier than it became after I purchased this cookbook. I'm able to have dinner on the table in minutes, and they are healthful -- no weird preservatives or artificial junk that my family doesn't need to eat.

Here's what I do: I use a grocery delivery service. When I place my order online, I have my Dream Dinners cookbook in front of me. Based on what meats are on sale, I choose a beef, a pork and a chicken recipe (sometimes I substitute a pasta, turkey or other meal). I then add the ingredients I will need to make 3 of each recipe. It's usually just another $60 or so on my order. When the order arrives, I take two hours or so to put all of my dinners together. At the end, I have about 12 dinners to stack and freeze in my freezer. TWO HOURS to make 12 dinners -- miraculous!

Some of my family's favorites -- Pork Tenderloin with Pears, New England Pot Roast. Happy assemble-and-freezing!

4 out of 5 stars Bravo! A Great Resource.......2007-03-29

Busy mothers, rejoice. Dinner is served - or almost, anyway. Using the innovative assemble-and-freeze method developed by the founders of the Dream Dinners stores around the country, even the busiest of cooks can learn how to pour ingredients into plastic bags and freeze them, then cook as needed. Whether for breakfast, dinner, parties or dessert, just a few hours in the kitchen will yield weeks of hassle-free meals.

I would have liked to see more photos and graphics (they're always appreciated with cookbooks), but still, this is a fantastic resource. Bravo!

Book Description

Colette peters, the celebrated queen of the confectionary arts, unveils an inspiring resource for serious home bakers, professional chefs, and aficionados of Colette's incredible edible architecture. The ingenious cake decorator - whose miraculous and luscious concoctions have appeared everywhere from White House Christmases to royal weddings - presents a master class in cake design and decoration, alongside an all-new selection of her own cake designs. With Cakes to Dream On, Colette's inspired creations can now be rendered into show-stopping cakes of your own.

Cakes to Dream On reveals the secrets to fashioning gorgeous and utterly distinctive cakes for all occasions - whether it's an opulent marriage reception (the majestic Ivory Wedding Cake) or a fanciful children's party (the whimsical Homage to Dr. Seuss). Colette presents designs for cake architecture ranging from the imperial splendor of Dolce de Medici, to the elegant grace of Bride's Vintage Cameo, to the topsy-turvy daydream of Mad Tea Party.

Colette begins with the foundations: she illuminates step by step the process of constructing a multitiered cake, from determining serving sizes and choosing appropriate cake pans to making fillings, and ultimately stacking layers so they don't tumble off the table. Cakes to Dream On also discloses insider tricks of the trade: Colette's easy-to-follow instructions in techniques such as sugarwork, gumpaste, brush embroidery, and piping will help readers recreate the spectacular effects of this singular confectioner's toolbox.

Bakers - and their enthusiastic audiences - will discover that these sensual masterpieces tantalize the palate as much as they do the eye. Colette's cake recipes include the Coco-Loco Cake, an alluring marriage of coconut and coffee; the Meringue Buttercream and its luscious lemon, raspberry, and mocha variants; and the ambrosial caramel-tinged Heavenly White Cake.

As breathtaking as Colette's cake works appear, her clear explanations of technique are meant to stimulate readers' creative instincts and give them ideas for crafting their own distinctive confections. With more than 150 dazzling full-color photographs illustrating both processes and finished presentations, and more detailed instruction than ever before, Cakes to Dream On will inspire readers to create their own mouthwatering masterpieces. Colette's master class is truly a launchpad for cake lovers' own confectionary visions.

5 out of 5 stars Colette is wonderful.......2007-09-03

I love all of Colette's books. I have been successful in recreating many of her wonderful designs. If you are looking for a decent instructive book on how to recreate special event cakes, buy any of her books.

2 out of 5 stars Cake catalog.......2007-08-17

When I bought this book,I knew it would be very advanced, but I was very wrong. This book is a cake catalog of the things that Colette Peters can do. The pictures are great, and there are a lot of ideas, but very little explaining and how-to photos. I thought I would learn how to make crooked cakes, but it turns out I learned more from a blog than this book.If you want ideas,it's great,if you want directions, search somewhere else.

Book Description

This landmark work, first published by Sierra Club Books in 1988, has established itself as a foundational volume in the ecological canon. In it, noted cultural historian Thomas Berry provides nothing less than a new intellectual-ethical framework for the human community by positing planetary well-being as the measure of all human activity.
Drawing on the wisdom of Western philosophy, Asian thought, and Native American traditions, as well as contemporary physics and evolutionary biology, Berry offers a new perspective that recasts our understanding of science, technology, politics, religion, ecology, and education. He shows us why it is important for us to respond to the Earth's need for planetary renewal, and what we must do to break free of the "technological trance" that drives a misguided dream of progress. Only then, he suggests, can we foster mutually enhancing human-Earth relationships that can heal our traumatized global biosystem.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Compelling!.......2007-03-30

The Dream of the Earth is a classic on environmental philosophy. It may perhaps be the most important environmental book ever written outside of Rachal Carson's Silent Spring. Berry tells us what went wrong and what needs to be done to reverse the dysfunction. A must read for anyone who loves our Earth Mother.

5 out of 5 stars Healing the Earth.......2004-09-22

Our planet, Gaia, is sorely in need of healing. Her earth, waters, and air are polluted. Natural resources are being depleted. Thousands of plant and animal species are becoming extinct.

In this classic book, Thomas Berry summarizes and discusses the dire needs of our planet for healing. While not going so far as to advocate spiritual healing as a solution, Berry strongly advocates for awareness of the innate intelligence of Gaia.

Berry masterfully explores the mind-sets that have contributed to the dangerous depletion of our planetary resources. He suggests that we have yet to find the guiding myths and images to inspire us to relinquish our focus on personal and national material gains in order to properly focus our energies on relating to Gaia in a harmonious way.

The annotated bibliography invites focused further reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Guide To Earth/Universe Connectivity.......2004-02-13

Thomas Berry has put together in this one book what a thousand other writers have attempted and that is: a complete format for human perception of reality that should and can pervade through all our earthly activities, esp. religion, politics and economy. Let Earth and it's biolgical processes teach and guide us to a rational, sustainable, regenerative, healthy existence.

There are many potent passages all through this work and I picked out one that I felt was inclusive of the gist of the book.

..."This universe itself, but especially the planet Earth, needs to be experienced as the primary healer, primary commercial establishment, and primary lawgiver for all that exists within this life community. The basic spirituality communicated by the natural world can also be considered as normative for the future ecological age."- Page 120

This is an excellent treatise on reverence for the creative life forces that sustain us and treat us daily to a plethora of interactive life processes and our need to acknowledge this gift by treating it with the awe and respect it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars A Global Story, A Saving Story.......2003-12-22

In one of his Dialogues, Plato says that the most serious difficulty one faces when attempting to philosophize is in "finding a suitable story for what one wants to say." But it's a difficulty worth facing at this time in history because a suitable story may serve to energize and advance current efforts to develop a globally responsible spirituality.

Everywhere we hear from perceptive folk that our conventional story has grown dangerously obsolete, and only by reimagining the world and our place in it can we advance beyond the dysfunctional limits of the old story.

The "dream of the earth" so beautifully described in this work by "geologian" Thomas Berry just may be the "big enough story" needed now to creatively navigate the global transition from a way of destruction to a way of sustainable wisdom rooted in a respect for the earth as respect for our very own bodies

1 out of 5 stars New Age Religion in the Guise of Christianity.......2003-04-12

Don't be misled. Because Thomas Berry is promoted as a Catholic priest, many people are falsely led to believe that his books present Catholic or Christian teaching about the environment. Instead, this book presents a New Age blend of do-it-yourself religion mixed with pseudo-science. If you're into that, you'll probably like this book...

Have you ever seen a cookbook that mixes controversy into its recipes? Have you ever come across a book that combines gourmet dishes, artwork, and political and social commentary? Can a single book raise questions, stir emotions, and make you thirst for food and knowledge? Art and Cook may just be this generation's breakthrough book and it's aptly labeled by its creators as being the leader of the Revolutionary Movement.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype.......2006-12-15

I bought this book because of a rave review in the LA Times. It was intended as a gift but I would be too embarrassed to give it to anyone. Rarely have I seen a worse designed book. It looks like first generation web design blown up and printed between hard covers. The recipes themselves look interesting and the photos are cute but the prentious verbiage and overblown graphics gave me indigestion before I set foot in the kitchen.

1 out of 5 stars extra ingredients sacrificed to page layout.......2006-03-03

If you want a cookbook that is so poorly edited that you will have multiple extra ingredients from the ingredient list that are not used in the recipe, then this is the book for you.

Entire paragraphs seem to have been cut out of the recipes for the sake of page layout.

What a piece of garbage. I have never been one to burn books, but this is a good candidate for the incinerator.

4 out of 5 stars A fun and original book!.......2005-12-03

I was very impressed with this book. Art and Cook is a very original concept and a great conversation piece for your coffee table or as a gift. There are fun recipes and VERY fun design to compliment them. This was a great purchase. The package alone is worth the cost of the book!!

Very Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars A stupid pretentious book, written by a stupid pretentious person, for stupid pretentious people - a complete rip-off........2005-11-27

Aside from the fact that the book was plagiarized by Allan Ben from unknowing photographers & designers who were swindled out of their ideas, designs, compensation, and credit - the book has no soul. There is no "running thread" or theme. Not one original thought. Not even worthy as a coffee table book. Don't embarrass yourself - you deserve better.

1 out of 5 stars freakish and pretentious.......2004-06-04

I use the words freakish and pretentious to describe this book because not only is it filled with "the cloud" (frenetic repeated techno-graphics used so commonly in early 90's websites) it reeks of turtleneck sweaters and black berets. The graphic design and images are distracting, at times distasteful, and on occasion, enough that I want to slap the book shut and hold it with two fingers away from me at arm's length.

Some of the images scare me. Take a look at the front cover. You see the eyeball EYEing you from inside the egg? If you perhaps think that a cookbook is about how food should eat you, then maybe it's for you. Or if you want to create food and have a nice display to put next to it when you display it in a gallery, maybe this book is good choice.

This is not a cookbook. It is a graphic design study with the subject of unappetizing food.

      Book Description

Ever notice the way a school of dome-shaped jellyfish floating in water looks like wild mushroom soup? Or the way a creamy, cratered moon can look like a crispy pita just waiting to be dunked into a swirl of hummus? If you haven’t, let Art and Cook open you to a disconcertingly fresh and strange world of correlations. Packaged appropriately in an egg carton, this quirky book serves up art the way it does food―in an eccentric, engaging, and witty manner.
Inspired by Dadaist and Surrealist ideals, Art and Cook aims to “fuse together conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely, joining the everyday rational world in an absolute reality, a surreality.” It melds pop art and food to create original works of art that do what any good art intends to: explore new territory, cause controversy, and make people think differently about how we consume food and about the world around them. Art and Cook is not your ordinary cookbook, but it is a totally satisfying and fulfilling experience.

"Established itself as a seasoned most provocative cookbook." ―Linda Hales, The Washington Post

Dreams can often seem real, but waking up usually ends the illusion. From blurred images that hunt her mind, Roshelle pulls from her dreams the very definite presence of a dream specter. But Roshelle isn't a coward and won't be scared of a dream. She welcomes him so she can look her monster in the face. Only instead of a beast, she finds her soulmate. Jared Campbell's mind is trained to sharp perfection. He's careful to touch the mind, but not the memory, until Roshelle-she remembers him. As much as Jared's life doesn't allow for his growing interest, his emotions just won't heed the warning. Roshelle is addictive and he wants more than just a taste. The dream specter and the dreamer meet on a collision course to danger-physically and of the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Another in the Dream Series.......2005-06-07

When Jared Campbell finds Roshelle Everitt on his mountain he's immediately distrustful of her. Sure that she's there as a threat to his family. As physics who are used by the government they are always watchful for threats. He quickly takes her to his home where he forces her to stay until he can figure out exactly who she is. He never expects the sudden connection that he has with her. Before long he realizes that their connection is far more than just physical and that she is the woman for him. Now he has to protect her from an enemy that is determined to use her and their unborn child for his own purposes.

After reading Mary Wine's first book, Dream Shadow, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to read Dream Specter as soon as it came out. As soon as I got it and immediately began reading and wasn't able to put it down until the end. Jared and Roshelle are both well developed characters who draw you in. Mary Wine doesn't forget the characters who were introduced in Dream Shadow and it is a welcome treat to see them again. There are many wonderful ebook authors but with Dream Shadow, Mary Wine proves that she's on the top of the list. Any book with her name on it is an auto-buy for me!
