Book Description
Within the past decade, lacrosse has seen explosive growth on the elementary, junior and high school, and college levels, rapidly becoming one of America's most popular playing sports. Lifelong lacrosse player and coach Daniel Morris, along with noted author Michael Morris, distill the essence of this exciting, fast-paced game into one compact volume, teaching everything the beginning and intermediate coach needs to know about the rules, equipment, skills, and drills of this venerable game.
Unlike other books on lacrosse, this guide reflects recent important rule changes, as well as the latest techniques in offense and defense, stick-handling, and advances in equipment that have transformed the game as it is played today. Chapters focus on critical elements of individual and team play, conducting practices, skill-building drills, and a playbook of offensive and defensive strategies. A resource list of suppliers, camps, and additional information is included.
This is a book that will find a place on every coach and player's shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Best coaching book I have seen.......2007-05-07
I am coaching youth, middle school, and travel lax teams and have very little on-field lacrosse experience. Of the tools I have found, this book is the most straightforward. When I see the most experienced coaches work, they are using the drills in this book. There is still a lack of good books on intermediate lacrosse offensive and defensive strategies, but this handles all the basics.
Great book for beginning coaches.......2006-10-02
I am very pleased with this book. Great outline of all aspects of the sport. A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.
Lacrosse Newbie.......2006-06-26
Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!
Exceptionally Helpful.......2006-03-25
I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team. I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport.
...at last!.......2006-03-20
Yes, at last a book that covers everything from novice to coaching for Lacrosse. Well written and informative, which makes it interesting and a easy read. I bought this book for my nephew who's a high school Lacrosse coach. He was thrilled, he told me there is almost nothing written about this sport, especially in such an easy to read and informative style. As he said. "If you're interested in Lacrosse, this is the book."

One of my "most recommended" books on craps!.......2007-05-12
If you understand the basics of the game but are still looking for a way to win on a consistent basis - John Patrick is your man. John's theories are simple and straight forward. You have to have near-perfect knowledge of the game in order to win consistently. You need sufficient bankroll to have a shot. You should approach the game with a theory or plan for HOW you are going to play. Set win objectives and loss limits. And have the discipline to walk with a small win. Will you do what it takes to win? Probably not. And according to John, that makes you a dork. Hey - get over it. After all, he's probably right.
On a personal basis, I've known John for about ten years now. He's a class guy and one of the few in this business who actually does the things he writes about. This book is a "must have" for serious crapsters.
Not So Advanced!.......2007-03-24
I have read this book several times. I have tested all of the systems in the book at great length and all have had the same results. All of the sytems and methods outlined in the book are, in the long run, losers. The best thing that can be accomplished (and not by all the systems) is that you learn how to manage your money and to leave the table if you should have a short term win. The newer books on craps have been revised to include more disclosures, but all in all this one has no more value than any other I have read. If any of the methods outlined in the book actually made money Las Vegas would be a ghost town.
Yes, yes, yes.......2007-02-18
This guy is a machine in writing books, and giving new logic and money discipline. I have about everything he's written, and always pick up new things in each. He throws in alot of stories as well about what it's like in his professional world of gambling. It must be something to have his skills and mindset when you walk into the room. Never hesitate in buying a Patrick book.
Good stuff.......2007-01-19
As always, Patrick does a great job with his money discipline in this one. He reminds me of alot of high level money managers in Wall Street. The upside always takes care of itself, when you take care of the downside. Great book.
Only Serious Players Need Apply .......2006-05-22
One of the few books available for the highly experienced player (aside from those on "dice control"), Patrick's book contains some very intriguing hedging strategies. A must-have for any craps library.

Customer Reviews:
Decent book, but very basic.......2007-08-07
this is a book about limit poker for a beginner. Not for the advanced player as the front of the book reads. But if you are a beginner, it seems like it should do a decent job at teaching. I was disappointed, but I've been playing foraa couple of years.
great book for my boyfriend.......2007-05-30
I bought this book for my boyfriend in Jan. He had been getting in to playing poker and wanted to learn more about Texas Hold Em. I checked out other books on Amazon, but decided to go w/ this one. Good thing I did because he LOVED it. He even looked over some other books in the store and said this was the one he would have chosen for himself.
Great book for learning how to analyze cards.......2007-01-20
This was one of the first poker books I got, and its layout was a great help. It starts with some basic principles, then jumps headfirst into 150 different scenarios, where you're asked how to play it further. Purdy provides the full odds and play situation, then his detailed answer on how you could play it, what could happen, and how he'd play it. It helped me greatly with understanding the strength of pocket cards and reading the board, plus analyzing what pocket hands would beat my made hands.
That said, the book's biggest weakness is the promotion of very tight play, plus an emphasis on using your cards as the sole determinant of whether or not to play hands. Strong pocket hands are rare, and players who put this to practice in real tournaments often will watch their stacks slowly disappear and get blinded off, going out of tournaments with a whimper. You will rarely see hands strong enough to play, and when you do, there is no guarantee you'll have a playable hand, let alone the winning hand, once the cards hit the table. The book also doesn't emphasize enough the importance of playing position, though it does go into detail how you play different based on chip counts. However, the book's scenarios often have you playing with a chip lead: obviously, as a beginner, you're not going to be in such a situation very often.
It's great for beginners picking up basic principles on pocket and hand analysis, plus elements of situational tournament play. Once you master its principles, though, you'll want to move up and read more advanced materials. Recommendations are all over the internet. However, I would suggest reading this before reading the convoluted strategy manuals that are popular today.
A good 2nd book on THE - Useful despite errors.......2006-12-04
This book contains a systematic error in its crucial table of opening hand strength on page 24-25. (It purports to give the odds a given hand has of winning when up against one other hand, but its numbers are too low for all hands but AA; the weighted average win rate should be 50%, but more than half the hands are showing win rates of less than 5%.) And there are better sources for systematic starting hand strength, generally using Slansky-style Groups 1 through 8 -- buy one of those first.
But I learned a lot from many of the situations in this book; most of the time where the book disagreed with my initial perception, the book convinced me with its logic. But sometimes Purdy missed something (in situation #146, your best hope is actually to get a fourth 3 on the turn or river, giving you the nut hand with your Ace kicker). And sometimes he made an error in drawing odds (and yes, I know that, say, 20% = 1/5 = 4-to-1); in the same situation the odds of getting an A or 10 on the turn alone are are 6.8-to-1 (not 11-to-1 as stated) and the odds of A, T or 3 are 5.7 to 1. (7 outs, for 40-to-7).
You have pot odds to call because there are probably no face-card pocket pairs (there was no raising pre-flop) and the odds are only 12/47 that anyone still in holds a 3 (6 callers saw the flop), and probably less than that since 3 is not a power card (it had more than average odds of being folded, except perhaps if it happened to be held as A3s). With pot odds you should at least call, not fold.
Low limit player, on the right track.......2006-11-10
I have been playing twice a week for a year now at a 4-8 game. Usual win rate of about 8 out of 10 sessions. This book helped to reinforce I was playing right most of the time and pointed out where I had some holes. I'd recommend for the average low limit player who thinks they are on the right track.

Interesting travelog for the Heartlands and the North.......2000-06-14
The PG (Player's Guide) series is a well-crafted, "user-friendly" set of guidebooks that introduces new players to the worlds of TSR. The approach is refreshingly light and engaging (gamespeak and rhetoric are kept to an absolute minimum), and as primary overviews of classic campaign worlds, these colorful sourcebooks are ideal! This one details the Forgotten Realms - chapters include lore on The Seekers (a great adventuring fellowship), and their journeys throughout the North - 128 pages, a fantastic story!

Decent, albeit a bit aged.......2005-09-09
A very good book on Magic strategies, but keep in mind this book was made in 1998 when Stronghold first came out, so this information is a bit dated. Obviously this means that some of the strategies have long ago lost popularity, or have no bearing on the current set's strategies. Another problem, is that some of the individual card descriptions for the Stronghold set are wrong (ie Flowstone Hellion is not a flying creature!). But outside of that, Mark Justice is an excellent old-school Magic player and if you play with older cards, you should definately read through this book.
Mark is one of the best in the business.......2004-08-05
When I was a serious tournament player I met Mark in Lincoln, Nebraska. Mark is a friendly, intelligent, and generous person. He's a great example of someone who found what he was meant to do in life. Mark is committed to the game and sharing his knowledge, which he demonstrated when I saw him in person. He also imparts his knowledge to fellow gamers in this well written book.
Obviously, the book went out of date (in a sense) soon after it was published. However, it contains a treasure trove of knowledge for the serious player. Magic is about strategy first and tactics second. Of course the game will change as WOTC develops new cards and different rules. I particularly liked the rigorous way the book delineates how to create an effective tournament deck. Mark also gives great tips about how to analyze new cards (how will that ever go out of date?).
I disagree with the foreward of the book - it states that anyone can become a great magic player with enough hard work. I've been around and I know that some people are naturally talented at Magic playing and will be better players than everyone else. However, using the book's advice will probably result in more wins for the committed student and player of Magic. econ
Good For The Newcommer...In 1998!.......2004-01-13
This is one of the only real strategy guides for Magic that I could get my hands on when I was still starting out. Written by one of the great masters of the game, Tim Deopulos, the book gives instructions on the more advanced aspects of the game, including tournament formats, deck history, tips and tricks, and even bluffing advice. In my mind, it acts as mostly as an "advanced rulebook." However, it is now six years old. The game changed so much since Tempest was in Standard, which seems like ages to any Magic player now (Honestly, since when did you play Tempest Booster Draft?). This was even before the Sixth Edition rules upheaval, which tried to simplify the game not only for newcomers, but also for tournament players. Due to this large expansion of the games rules, this guide is now a relic of a forgotten time; when the Auratog deck was still considered a cool idea (I remind you that this is before Urza's Saga) and when Standard was still fresh out of infancy. So, in conclusion, it was a great buy way back when, but now it's just part of the discount section, along with the Homelands boosters and The Wheel of Time CCG.
Sadly Out of Date.......2003-06-12
I won't waste much typing on this review. The title says it all. With about 3 new Magic editions released since this book was published, don't waste a cent on this stinker (8th Edition due out in July 2003). It was great when first released, but thye need to get on the ball and write a new one.

Will Be Appreciated By Veteran And Novice Gamers Alike.......2000-10-21
The World of Greyhawk, one of TSR's first and most popular AD&D game settings, is revisited in the Player's Guide to Greyhawk, an accessory that will be appreciated by old fans of Greyhawk who wish to return to this exciting milieu and by newer gamers who have yet to experience it.
This accessory includes an introduction to the world of Oerth; an overview of the Flanaess (the continent central to Greyhawk adventures), a section of gods and other political and supernatural powers; information on the city of Greyhawk itself; notes on the various races of the game world; special information on roleplaying in the Flanaess; "Adventuring Attractions in the Central Flanaess" (i.e., the vicinity of Greyhawk City); and several player character kits, three of them for orders of knighthood.
Graphic elements include a double-sided, 11" x 17" cardstock insert that features a full color map of the Flanaess on one side and the domain of the city of Greyhawk on the other. The maps are colorful and attractive, and whereas the Flanaess map is not nearly as impressive as the two posters that used to depict it, it is more wieldy; the Greyhawk domain map is well detailed and will prove a useful tool to anyone running an adventure in the region. Other color graphics include depictions of the symbols of major Greyhawk gods and powers (e.g., the hand and eye of Vecna, and the arrows and iron gauntlet of Hextor).
The Player's Guide to Greyhawk is well organized, fun to look through, and comprehensive enough to be of real value to players and DMs involved in Greyhawk adventures.
--Michael J. Varhola for Skirmisher Online Gaming Magazine
Excellent Summary for all players, and most DMs.......1998-12-20
The "Player's Guide to Greyhawk" is a well written, concise book about the history, peoples, politics, and other topics regarding the World of Greyhawk, and more specifically, the City of Greyhawk. I wish that it had more material on other places in the WoG, but overall it is a superb book that will give any player insight to the races and history that makes Greyhawk so special compared to other bland forgotten realms.

Players Guide for Dragonlance review........2000-02-11
This is a book I'd reccemend to all players on Krynn before the Age of Mortals. Consider this a book that takes the World Book of Anaslon from the Tales of the Lance box set and takes out the parts the player characters should not know, and you have the synopsis of this book. Although parts of the book may be found lacking to the players, this allows the DM expansion onto ideas that were not presented in the novels and expansions; merely hinted at.
