Book Description
The boys are back after 40 years! Author's Edition with previously unpublished text restored from the original manuscripts.
A strange sea monster appears on the lake ...a fortune is unearthed from an old cannon ...a valuable dinosaur egg is stolen. Watch out as the Mad Scientists turn Mammoth Falls upside down!
Take seven, lively, "normal" boys -- one an inventive genius -- give them a clubhouse for cooking up ideas, an electronics lab above the town hardware store, and a good supply of Army surplus equipment, and you, dear reader, have a boyhood dream come true and a situation that bears watching.
In the hands of an author whose own work involved technological pioneering, the proceedings are well worth undivided attention, as the boys explore every conceivable possibility for high and happy adventure in the neighborhood of Mammoth Falls. To the unutterable confusion of the local dignitaries -- and the unalloyed delight of Bertrand Brinley's fans -- the young heroes not only outwit their insidious rival, Harmon Muldoon, but emerge as town heroes. Here, captured under one cover, are the fun-filled escapades of the young scientists whose exciting capers debuted in Boys' Life magazine 40 years ago.

Good memories.......2007-04-28
I first read this book when I was about 11 and loved it. I thought it was so cool these guys had all these great ideas and equipment to pull them off. The book now reminds me of a simpler time when kids knew how to have fun with their imagination instead of a $400 video game.
I was so glad when I found the book available again. I look forward to when I can give it to my nephew and hope to instill in him the same sense of wonder books such as these instilled in me.
Read all of the M.S.C when I was a kid.......2007-02-03
My son has a thing for Kids Next Door, so I was immediatly reminded about these books. I loved them when I was a kid (8 or 10ish). I ordered the series so that I can read them to him (he's almost 6) and then he can read them when he gets older. I can't wait, plus this will get him more into reading (which he does more than he wants to admit) and less into tv and visual things. I'm sure he will love them as much as I did. Will post another when they come, but I distinctly remember a mini submarine, a baloon, and a flying saucer entering into the capers/stories (of this and other books).
When I was a child.......2007-01-31
I first owned the Mad Scientist Club through Scholastic Book Club. I think I was in the [...]and the book cost me $.35. Anyway, the book is good clean fun. There is nothing in the adventures of these young men that would embarass a parent. Actually, I always wanted to form my own chapter of the club. What they did seemed so much more interesting than holding a video game controller... which is what most kids are doing with their free time these days.

A favorite book.......2007-01-18
This book is one of my daughters favorites. She read it three times by the time she was 10.
One of the best memories of my childhood.......2006-06-01
was reading these short stories as they were published in Boy's Life. The collection was almost an anti-climax - still wonderful, but by then so thorougly digested I'd practically memorized them.
The real treat was when I bought these books for my son. Not only was there "The Mad Scientists Club" and "The New Adventures" thereof, but two full length novels published after the author's death - The Big Kerplop, and The Big Chunk of Ice.
All four are treasures.

This elegant volume--perhaps one of the best gift books on the planet--contains all six adventures of the irrepressible, mischievous Madeline (the smallest and spunkiest of the twelve little girls in two straight lines). Ludwig Bemelmans's Madeline was first published in 1939, and its five sequels have all become classics. In Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anna Quindlen's introduction to Mad About Madeline she writes, "Amid a childhood full of children's books, amid glorious pictures and imaginative plots, it is worth wondering why this story is among a handful of books that now-grown children invariably buy for their own more than half a century after Ludwig Bemelmans began writing it on the back of a restaurant menu."
Inside this hefty, richly illustrated edition, you'll find Madeline, Madeline and the Bad Hat, Madeline's Rescue, Madeline and the Gypsies, Madeline in London, and Madeline's Christmas, in addition to Quindlen's splendidly insightful introduction, an essay by Bemelmans on how he invented Madeline, never-before-published working sketches of Madeline, and photos of the Bemelmans family. The perfect gift for anyone who has made friends with--or should be introduced to--the precocious Madeline. (The jaunty verse makes Madeline perfect for reading aloud, and readers ages 6 and older will enjoy sounding out names such as Lord Cucuface.)
Book Description
For over sixty years, Madeline's adventures have enthralled her ever-growing audience. This collection brings together all six of the Madeline books in one volume. Every well-loved word and picture is here, plus an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anna Quindlen, an essay by Ludwig Bemelmans on how he created Madeline, and working sketches of Madeline, as well as photos of the Bemelmans family. This landmark volume will be treasured by the entire family.

A must have for every girl.......2007-05-12
I usually borrow children books from my local library but there are some I do want my daughters to own, this is one of them. Madeline's character is so charming, the stories are easy to read and full of adventures little girls will love.
The Perfect Bedtime Storybook.......2007-04-05
For years, young girls have been entertained by the adventures of Madeline, and this collection of stories only adds to the Madeline madness!
My girls love Madeline.......2007-01-16
Bemelman's quirky stories and wonderful illustrations captivate my girls when Madeline comes up as the evening's bedtime story. While the original story is by far the most realistic and best, my girls (both under five) love the fact that Madeline has new adventures, and we like that real things happen to her, like her appendix bursting or she falls in the river when playing on a bridge.
Unlike so many children's books, sometimes Madeline's sisters are "very sad." But reading Madeline makes my girls very happy.
good children's classics.......2007-01-10
I bought this as Christmas gift for my friends' kids and they LOVE it.
This is a fantastic collection........2006-11-10
My kids and I had very little exposure to Madeline, but Anna Quindlen's foreward intrigued me. My kids and I are now hooked. Madeline is such a charming character, and now we have all of her adventures to enjoy!

Robin Hobb returns to the sea with Mad Ship, the second book in a projected trilogy set in the same world as her famed Farseer series. Many unresolved questions from Ship of Magic are answered in this tale of sea serpents and dragons; living ships made of wizardwood; the Bingtown Trader families who sail the ships; and their disfigured cousins, the Rain Wild Traders, who build them.
The Vestritt family's liveship, Vivacia, has been taken by Kennit, an ambitious pirate. Captain Haven is a prisoner; his son Wintrow, who bears the Vestritt blood, finds himself competing with Kennit for Vivacia's love as she becomes a pirate ship. Althea Vestritt, in training to become Vivacia's captain, arrives home to discover her beloved ship lost. Brashen Trell, her old friend and shipmate, proposes that they sail to Vivacia's rescue in the liveship Paragon, who has lost two previous crews and is believed mad. Malta, Althea's niece, seeks help from her suitor, the Rain Wild Trader Reyn, whose family is the Vestritt's major creditor. Meanwhile, the sea serpents who follow sailing ships struggle to remember their history and return to their place of transformation.
Each volume in this series is a major undertaking, but those who enjoy original, epic fantasy, characters who grow and change believably, and fine writing will not want to miss The Liveship Traders. --Nona Vero
Book Description
In
Ship of Magic, the breathtaking first volume in her new fantasy trilogy, Robin Hobb wrote of the Liveship Traders of Bingtown. Now a new tide of glory and terror sweeps forward the story of the proud Vestrit clan, their priceless liveship Vivacia, and all who strive to possess her.
"If Patrick O'Brian were to turn to writing fantasy, he might produce something like this," raves
Booklist, and truer words have never been spoken. This is a tale of the Old Traders of Bingtown and their rare magic ships--carved from sentient wizardwood that bonds them mystically with those who sail them. Theirs is an ancient tradition, but one that is slowly eroding under the harsh realities of a cold new order.
For these once proud Traders, it is a humbling lesson to learn that the foundations of their world, which had seemed immutable, are resting on shifting sands. Their corrupt ruler is deeding away their ancestral lands to upstart newcomers, and a growing traffic in human flesh is eroding the boundaries of civilized society. A plague of sea serpents and pirates off the coast is destroying the established trade routes, and ancient fortunes are dwindling. Old debts are coming due, and talk of rebellion is growing. And added to this uneasy mix, ancient powers are stirring on the banks of the mysterious Rain Wild River.
At the center of the conflict lies the Vestrit clan and their liveship Vivacia. The Vestrits long for the Vivacia to make port, certain that her arrival will restore the family fortunes. And Althea Vestrit, beautiful and dauntless, yearns more deeply than any. For she lives only to reclaim the liveship as her lost inheritance and captain her on the high seas.
But unknown to Althea, the lovely magical vessel has been seized for a slave galley and a privateer by the ruthless pirate captain Kennit, and now the Vivacia sails, her decks washed with blood, through the perilous southern passages of the Pirate Isles. Held captive onboard is Althea's nephew, Wintrow, who has made a desperate bargain: he has promised to heal Kennit of a mortal wound using arts learned in his monastic boyhood--or forfeit his life and that of his father.
Meanwhile, in Bingtown, Althea finds her onetime sea mate Brashen still struggling to redeem his wild past and out to prove himself a ship's master. Though wary of each other since their brief, ill-fated flare of passion, they now make common cause in a quest to find the Vivacia. But should they risk all they possess to rescue a liveship who may not want to be rescued? For the Vivacia is far from unhappy in her new life--and for Althea and Brashen, the method of Vivacia's liberation may prove more dangerous than leaving her in Kennit's ambitious grasp.
Mad Ship is a rich, tapestried epic of enchantment that will set your imagination ablaze, proving that Robin Hobb is a writer not only working at the top of her form, but constantly surpassing it.

And Althea Vestrit waits even more avidly, living only to reclaim the ship as her lost inheritance and captain her on the high seas.
But the Vivacia has been seized by the ruthless pirate captain Kennit, who holds Althea's nephew and his father hostage. Althea and her onetime sea mate Brashen resolve to liberate the liveship -- but their plan may prove more dangerous than leaving the Vivacia in Kennit's ambitious grasp....
Customer Reviews:
Swashbuckling magical sea story.......2007-07-26
This is the middle novel of the "Liveship Traders" trilogy ("Ship Of Magic"), a fantasy saga of seagoing trading families bonded to sentient liveships made of rare wizardwood.
The Vestritt liveship, Vivacia, which had been taken from Althea Vestritt by her brother-in-law and turned to slave dealing, has been seized by the ambitious, slavery hating pirate Kennitt, further destroying the deteriorating finances of the Vestritt family.
Althea, with the help of the disinherited but dashing Brashen and the self-possessed outsider Amber, decides to go after Vivacia in the mad liveship Paragon, which has destroyed his previous crews and been beached for years.
The story moves from the traders' homeland of Bingtown, a place of Victorian propriety, to the disturbing magical land of the Rain Wilders where wizardwood is found, to the opulent corruption of the Satrap whose feckless greed is destroying his realm, to the seagoing adventures of Vivacia, her reluctant young Vestritt sailor Wintrow and her ruthless new captain Kennitt and, not least, to the undersea world of the great serpents who are mysteriously losing their minds and memories.
Basically a swashbuckling romantic sea story with magical properties and ethical strife, Hobb's story is only slightly marred by overwritten human quarreling. The grand adventure entertains but interested readers will have to look for the third installment, "Ship of Destiny," to see how it all comes out.
a wild voyage [no spoilers].......2007-04-07
"The Liveship Traders: Mad Ship" continues "The Liveship Traders Trilogy" as Wintrow adapts to a new life aboard his ship controlled by the pirate Kennit. The author masterfully blends numerous plotlines of continuous adventure into an extraordinary middle novel tying traditional family issues and values with survival inside a changing society during a political upheaval.
In a host of characters predominately female, Kennit reigns supreme by his engaging personality and arrogant attitude even when he reveals a fair amount of his mysterious and painful past. One of the best lines is when he commands a particular person to do something, the person boldly informs Kennit he cannot make him do anything, he is not a slave, to which Kennit replies, "I can make you dead."
The abundant cast, which includes many newer individuals, is nearly overwhelming. From Amber befriending the liveship Paragon to Brashen Trell and Althea Vestrit enduring separation, the characters themselves are the strongest point in the multi-layered tale. A few people mature like the glowing Wintrow Haven, and even his conniving and deceitful sister Malta begins to show positive changes in her behavior.
The challenging life of a Rain Wild Trader on a volatile land addresses the recurring Elderkind and magic quickened inanimate objects into living creatures theme from "The Farseer Trilogy". Near the end of the story, there is enlightenment about the unusual "tangle" segment and could have a great impact on the relationship between the Rain Wilder Traders and Old Traders.
There are disturbing events similar to the prior novel, which may be questionable for young readers. A more detailed map of the significant terrains including a legend plus a comprehensive appendix would have been useful.
I highly recommend this series to any fan of the fantasy genre.
Thank you.
solid performance.......2007-03-04
This is Robin Hobb's best series.
Her characters, plot, and theme are all well-fleshed out.
unlike her other series, the plot line moves at an appropriate pace.
Wonderful.......2007-01-09
This is the second book of the Liveship Traders trilogy. I found I just could not put this book down I read it in record time and could not wait to start the third book. I love Robin Hobb's style of writing, I wish I had discovered her earlier. I read and enjoyed the Farseer trilogy and I look forward to reading all of her books.
Liveship Traders, Book 2.......2006-08-02
The Vestrit family verges upon bankruptcy, and the Vivacia, the Vestrit family Liveship, is long overdue to return from trading. Their vast debts to the Rain Wild Traders are owed "in blood or gold." Unbeknownst to them, the Vivacia has been captured by Kennit the pirate, along Wintrow and Kyle Haven. But the Vestrits are not the only Trader family in trouble. All the Old Traders are feeling the pinch from the Satrap of Jamaillia's increasing taxes and the New Traders slave-made fortunes. People begin to openly discuss rebellion from Jamaillia. Althea returns home expecting to take over her ship, only to find it missing in action. When her old shipmate and former lover, Brashen Trell, also returns and confirms that pirates have captured the ship, the family initiates a mission to rescue Vivacia and their family members. Young but headstrong Malta Vestrit fears the possibility that she may be forced to marry a Rain Wilder to pay the family debt, while also secretly yearns for the adventure and the mystery of the Rain Wilds.
Kennit works his charms on Vivacia, attempting to win her over to the freedom and excitement of the pirate life.
The sea serpents gather and find a new way to restore their lost memories - namely eating Liveships. However, these memories are insufficient to allow them to complete their transformation alone. Even as they despair, She Who Remembers, freed by Wintrow at the cost of his life, is seeking them.
The Liveship Trader's Trilogy takes place in Jamaillia, Bingtown and the Pirate Isles, on the coast far to the south of the Six Duchies. The war in the north has interrupted the trade that is the lifeblood of Bingtown, and the Liveship Traders have fallen on hard times despite their magic sentient ships. At one time, possession of a Liveship, constructed of magical wizard wood, guaranteed a Trader's family prosperity. Only a Liveship can brave the dangers of the Rain Wild River and trade with the legendary Rain Wild Traders and their mysterious magical goods, plundered from the enigmatic Elderling ruins. Althea Vestrit expects her families to adhere to tradition, and pass the family Liveship on to her when it quickens at the death of her father. Instead, the Vivacia goes to her sister Keffria and her scheming Chalcedan husband Kyle. The proud Liveship becomes a transport vessel for the despised but highly profitable slave trade.
Althea, cast out on her own, resolves to make her own way in the world and somehow regain control of her family's living ship. Her old shipmate Brashen Trell, the enigmatic woodcarver Amber and the Paragon, the notorious mad Liveship are the only allies she can rally to her cause. Pirates, a slave rebellion, migrating sea serpents and a newly hatched dragon are but a few of the obstacles she must face on her way to discovering that Liveships are not, perhaps, what they seem to be, and may have dreams of their own to follow.

Customer Reviews:
No prior familiarity with the series is required to make this a fun, inviting read........2007-10-07
ary Pope Osborne's MONDAYS WITH A MAD GENIUS offers #38 in the 'Magic Tree House: A Merlin Mission' series. Here a mysterious message from Morgan le Fay, magical librarian of Camelot, involves two children the key to helping magician Merlin discovery joy in his life again. First they must journey to the magic tree house for 1500s Italy, and meet Leonardo da Vinci no prior familiarity with the series is required to make this a fun, inviting read.
Another great story in the series.......2007-10-02
My 8-year-old son is a huge fan of Magic Tree House, and this latest book was just as interesting and fun to read as all the other books. This time, Jack and Annie meet Leonardo Da Vinci in old Italy on their mission to find the secret to happiness. Again, Osborne spins historical information into a tale of magic and wonder, which is fun to read for children and are educational just the same. The plot is a bit more simple this time, and it is somewhat lacking the magic that "Christmas in Camelot" and "Summer of the Sea Serpent," but is is well-developed and leaves the reader content - at least my son and I were.
Magic Treehouse books continue to inspire.......2007-10-01
This latest installment in the hugely successful Magic Treehouse series finds Jack and Annie traveling back in time to the Enlightenment period to spend a day helping Leonardo da Vinci. This third installment in the latest four book challenge has Jack and Annie seeking the true meanings of happiness. Once again, Mary Pope Osborne uses her brilliant technique to bring history alive and to explore philosophical ideas. In this story she describes every day life in the 16th century, discusses Leonardo's ideas and challenges in a way that makes him appear very human, and gives a wonderful story for the painting of the Mona Lisa. This is all written at a level my five-year old understands and my ten-year old still enjoys.
Great Education, Great Book, Too.......2007-09-28
My second grader loves this new Magic Tree House book! He read it twice the day he received it. He become so curious about Leonardo Da Vinci that he asked me about him so I dig out one of my art books about Da Vinci and showed him some of his most famous works. The next day he shared this book with his class in the morning sharing time and the class had a good discussion about Leonardo Da Vinci. I can't think of a better way to give a 7 year old such great education! I haven't read this book yet myself but I'm going to read it when his best friend returns it.

Customer Reviews:
Silly, Creative, Educational Fun!.......2007-05-23
I am so glad that they came out with a Junior version of Mad Libs. I always had fun with the originals with family and friends growing up. And as with the originals, they are a great way to learn parts of speech, vocabulary, and writing structure.
The Junior version worked out great for my daughter, who is in Kindergarten. (Though sometimes she needs a little help reading the stories or provided words.)There are symbols to show what type of word is needed (ie: star=noun). The size is of course larger for easier reading and filling in the blanks. Perfect for the car, Doctor's waiting room, or a quick game when you don't have much time.
Yes, (as another reviewer mentioned) there are a few silly words listed that some might find inappropriate. (Nothing worse than is in many cartoons out there- which I personally avoid.) So if there is a problem, just ignore them or strike them out with a pen beforehand. There are plenty of others to choose from! It didn't ruin our fun.
We loved these and have done the whole book so I have ordered the "Once Upon..." version. I only wish there were more of these in a book! Still they are a good value. I hope they keep making more of these!!
my review.......2005-08-03
this book is easily one of the most enjoyable canteloupes we have ever used to jump fish. you simply can't beat this kind of cabbage with turnips or aardvarks.
Great activity, but with one downfall.......2005-07-24
My kids love these Mad Lib Juniors, especially because they provide a list of words to choose from in each category, thereby teaching kids about Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs, etc.
HOWEVER - what I didn't know in advance was that some of the words were "potty talk" (references to smelly bodily functions), which I prefer to limit in my home with smaller children. It's still fun, and they love it!

SO MUCH TO DO...
SO LITTLE TIME!
Customer Reviews:
This will make a reader out of your 1st-3rd grader.......2007-10-09
This was my first foray into the word of Franny K. Stein. My grandson read me two chapters every night and you know what. I enjoyed it as much as he did and now he is reading the entire series. It has made an "avid reader" out of my 7 yr old grandson....isn't that what a children's book series should do. Start your little ones with this one - it will not disappoint. Only drawback are the black and white pictures but, this too is getting them into bigger and better things to read in the very near future.
Jim Benton does it again!.......2007-05-08
This is the sixth book in the Franny K. Stein series and it is just as great as all the others. My 10 year old daughter has been reading Franny K. Stein books for the past several years and has enjoyed this one tremendously. Highly recommended.
Another hit!.......2007-04-04
Yet another hit from Frannie's lab! My three girls (ages 3, 6, and 11) loved this book! The 11 year old loves that Franny is wise beyond her years but still naive. The 6 year old relishes the fact that Franny is gross but not too disgusting. Franny makes even Mom and Dad laugh with all her lab experiments gone wild. And with all the line drawings by Benton even the 3 year old enjoys it! A great girl to teach us all that tolerance for those around us who are different is ALWAYS the best way to be!
Kids will find lots of fun and hilarious moments, here........2007-03-07
Jim Benton's FRANNY K. STEIN: MAD SCIENTIST: THE FRAN WITH FOUR BRAINS (1416902317, $14.95) is an inviting humor title blending black and white cartoons with science drama. Adding to the 'Mad Scientist' series is this exploration of Fran, who has problems with Igor, mummies, and more. Kids will find lots of fun and hilarious moments, here.
Another great Franny K. adventure!.......2007-01-14
This book just arrived Friday, and my 6- and 10-yr-olds read it together (they usually fight like cats and dogs) because they couldn't decide who should get it first! Mom ended up joining the fun, and no one left until the whole book was finished! Any time the kids keep saying "Can't we just read one more chapter", I'd say "It's a hit!"

Book Description
Mercer Mayer's very popular Little Critter stars in a picture book about feeling angry. With minimal text and funny illustrations to spell out every new situation, the book shows the Critter family saying no to everything Little Critter wants to do. He can't keep frogs in the tub. He can't help paint the house. Finally, mad at the world, Little Critter announces he will run away. When pals come by and ask him to come and play baseball, our young hero's mood quickly changes. He grabs his bat and heads off for the game, telling himself he can run away another day if he is still so mad.

For a 3-year-old or a 20-year-old.......2007-07-16
I purchased this book for my grandnephew that is 3 years old and has a very quick little temper. My son who is now 20 grew up with Mercer Mayer books and he enjoyed reading this short story too. The next thing I knew I was looking through boxes for all of his old books from childhood. Mercer Mayer clicks with kids.
Mercer Mayer is a Genius.......2007-04-09
He writes so that kids and parents both get it. His irony is hillarious and the kids totally enjoy that their feelings are portrayed. LOVE it.
Excellent Children's series!.......2006-03-11
Little Critter is not having a great day but by the end of the book it becomes better for him. These are great read-along books for your budding readers. I have at least two whole sets of this series as my children plan to pass them onto their children to read.
Delightful.......2006-02-25
I am a Nanny and this series of books are some of my childrens' favorites.
Mercer Mayer books are wonderful!.......2006-01-27
Not only does my three year old absolutely adore these books, but all four of my daughters enjoyed them as small children. I've found them to be charming and well drawn, each one dealing with a normal part of life for a child.
This one shows the child critter being mad because everything (destructive) he tries to do his parents tell him no, but when he asks to go play, he's allowed to do that...which makes him AND his parents happy. :)

Scenes of Instruction: The Beginnings of the U.S. Study of Film
ASIN: 0520247434 |
Book Description
This engaging, deeply researched study provides the richest and most nuanced picture we have to date of cinema--both movies and movie-going--in the early 1910s. At the same time, it makes clear the profound relationship between early cinema and the construction of a national identity in this important transitional period in the United States. Richard Abel looks closely at sensational melodramas, including westerns (cowboy, cowboy-girl, and Indian pictures), Civil War films (especially girl-spy films), detective films, and animal pictures--all popular genres of the day that have received little critical attention. He simultaneously analyzes film distribution and exhibition practices in order to reconstruct a context for understanding moviegoing at a time when American cities were coming to grips with new groups of immigrants and women working outside the home. Drawing from a wealth of research in archive prints, the trade press, fan magazines, newspaper advertising, reviews, and syndicated columns--the latter of which highlight the importance of the emerging star system--Abel sheds new light on the history of the film industry, on working-class and immigrant culture at the turn of the century, and on the process of imaging a national community.
