Upbeat ode to confidence and a positive attitude.......2007-10-09
David J. Schwartz wrote this book nearly 50 years ago, but its principles are as fresh as the latest positive thinking seminar. Attitude, says the author, determines whether people embrace opportunities in life, and how they handle difficulties and challenges. He teaches that professional and personal success is rooted in self-confidence, conviction and optimism. Schwartz's advice and recommendations hold up, though you may wonder what planet you're on when he refers to $65 weekly salaries and $1,200 down payments on homes. Life obviously has changed dramatically in the past half-century and, considering the vast number of self-help books on the market, Schwartz's ideas hardly seem revolutionary, though they may have been at the time. We believe this classic retains its valuable foundation: A basic, useable approach to pursuing a happy, purposeful life.
Think BIG is BIG.......2007-09-20
Highly reccommended! Not just for the aspiring business person..this book is for everyone. This is the secret before there was "The Secret". A must read, insightful for everyone who wants to have a better life.
Great Stuff/ Timeless Priciples.......2007-09-06
This is an all time classic. But if you buy this book you better not be looking for a contemporary book on cutting edge material. This is a classic like "How to Win Friends and Influence People", with solid moral and ethical principles of business and how to live your life.
I would say that this is a must read, except for the fact that you have to get past some pretty dated anecdotes and the fact that the writer does not reference who these anecdotes are about. I can't imagine a contemporary writer getting away with what was polite and respectful writing in 1959 & 1965 when Schwartz uses anonymous examples to make his point. If a writer does that today they would seem to be writing fiction.
I may have offended some and I apologize. This is a great book and I don't mean to take away from the very sound principles in it. My only warning is that it was originally written in 1959 and that doesn't make it any less than excellent.
Great book.......2007-09-06
A must read book for everyone. There are so many things a person can learn from this book.
Being proactive.......2007-08-20
If you think you can, you're right; if you think you can't, you're right also. 'Magic' is a great addition to any self-help library - David Schwartz offers concise and well illustrated advice on improving your every day life. Varying from discussions on positive thinking, to dressing smart, using goals, and overcoming the fear of failure, there is something for everyone in this book. Highly recommended.

Excellent book.......2007-08-08
This is the best book that I have used on this subject. Clear explanations, illustrations, etc.
Excellent.......2007-06-16
A really very useful book that explains a complex subject about as clearly as you could hope for. Covers a great range of topics beyond color management. I highly recommend this book.
Good book if you are searching for a step by step guide........2007-01-25
I was really disapointed by the book. I wanted something that would have been closer to the theories and technicals aspects of color profiles. This is mainly a step by step book to follow with specific software (or even hardware) to reach some goal. It is very software and hardware specific - not generic. I learned more about "how color profiles works together" on websites than in the book.
Much Needed Book.......2006-06-19
Digital photographers don't pay enough attention to color management. This book is exactly what is needed to remedy that lack. You'll find all the basics here, and enough in-depth information to start you on the road to calibrating and fine-tuning your digital equipment to accurately reproduce the colors you see.
Just What You need.......2006-01-06
This is exactly what I was looking for; it gives a quick in-and-out overview of colour management, with detailed information about calibration and profiles. Other books on this topic are twice the size, which I don't think is necessary for most people.
It goes into very good detail, with task-by-task instructions, and is well-organised and clear (One reviewer claims that it was "poorly edited and conceived"; I didn't have any of the problems they did).

Great help for any golfer.......2007-01-21
I found in this book the kind of help I ( New senior golfer )was looking for.

Great stuff - worked for me.......2006-09-04
I have been playing golf for a long time, but have had a psychological barrier about playing "too well". I knew that the mental / confidence part was as important as the physical/practice part of golf, but I really didn't have an approach to improve my mental game. Until I read this book.
Golf is a Game of Confidence is an easy read, setup as antecdotes of lessons learned over 18 chapters. I could really identify with many chapters, and the book really appealed to me. I would highly recommend the book to anyone seeking to improve their mental outlook and have more fun with the game.
Summarized setup: Smile, Have Fun, Analyze the situation, Visualize the shot, Do it, Accept the result, and Forget about it. (Repeat until the round is over) Using this approach, I have broken 80 in my last two rounds (78, 79). Previously, I usually shot in the 80's, but have only broken 80 twice in my life ! This book is the best golf investment that I've ever made. You can keep the latest $500 driver, I'll take this book - and I'm having more fun with the game too.
It really helps!.......2001-05-09
I just want to say that this book was very helpful in increasing my confidence in my all around game. We all have rounds where we hit the ball extremely well the front nine and blow up on the back or vice-versa. Though it doesn't really give instructions or tips, it's what you take from it that is so beneficial. I played a few days after reading just the first few chapters and what I took from it was to "stay in the present". Every time I found myself getting ahead with my score or dwelling on a poor execution, I would say to myself, "Just stay in the present" and I played one of my best rounds ever. I would very much recommend this book to anyone who has ever "blown-up" during a round.
Golf Is A Game Of Confidence.......2001-05-04
I started reading this book three days ago. Today I competed in a small golf tournament and won. I shaved a good five strokes off and had the funnest round iv played in a long time. This is a good book, it shows you the do's and don'ts in preparing for a shot, hole, or match. Read this book.

A pleasant surprise - concentrates on basic principles.......2006-02-22
How often do you find phrases like "made simple" in the title of a book, only to find yourself out of your depth after a few pages? Well, you can rest assured. this book really does stick to the simple things. It tackles the end game in terms of concepts and plans, concentrating on basic principles, which can be applied in a practical way to our own endgame.
After an opening chapter on pawnless endings, we have a chapter on King and Pawn endings, a long section on Rook and Pawn endings, the most common type of ending encountered in practical play, followed by chapters on Knight endings, Bishop endings, Bishop and Knight endings, and Queen endings.
The second part of the book consists of 100 exercises, all taken from practical play, to test to what extent the reader can apply the knowledge gained in the first part. What is surprising is the number of times really simple endings occur in practical play. The 100 positions include a great many taken from GM games. I was pleasantly surprised at how often, after only a few seconds thought, I was able to find the winning/drawing line simply by applying my newly acquired knowledge. But even more astounding was the number of times a GM or very strong player had failed to find the right method. Food for thought here!
There have been many books on the ending written over the years, including a good number in the present millennium, but in terms of value for money I reckon that this one takes some beating. It is yet another example of my oft repeated dictum that GMs are not the best people to write for less able players.
This review first appeared in the magazine En Passant.
For those of us that need help in the endgame.......2004-07-03
How good is it when the author takes time to write conceptually what's going on, place a diagram with arrows, circles and whatever aids are needed to clarify his point and then explain clearly what is it that he wants to do with the position? And how great is it when after five moves the author shows you what happened afterwards with another diagram and repeats the process of analyzing the position and showing you how to play it? I used to think that Concise Chess Endgames was the best way to start to study the endgame but I was wrong... This is the book! This is the book to start studying endgames! I consider that the author must be a superb teacher because he uses all resources available to him to teach. Why can't books on such an arid topic as the endgame be as illustrative as this one?
Book Description
SHE DIDN’T BREAK THE RULES.
THEY BROKE HER.
Beneath its peaceful exterior, Dabion is a land of violence and intrigue, its politics run by judges, schemers, and spies. Elzith Kar is one such spy, gifted with an uncanny skill derived from rigorous training—and an unusual magic inherited from parents she never knew. Dabion may have use for her talent, but its rulers fear the magic that tempts it, so Elzith has hidden her history and true power, becoming a master player in a game she despises.
But now, as she heals in the aftermath of a dangerous mission, Elzith finds herself temporarily forced into life as a civilian. It is here she finds Tod Redtanner, a humble man with secrets of his own, and feels compelled to tell him her story. But as Elzith’s history unfolds and the present begins to unravel, it soon becomes clear that the past haunts more than just her dreams. And that if Elzith is to survive, she has no choice but to return to the world of intrigue and corruption that was once her domain. And this time she must play to win.

Quite good.......2005-08-19
I really enjoyed this book. It was a little slow and hard to keep track of in the beginning with all the geographical information and a very lacking map for reference, but as I became more interested in the characters, more aware of thier surroundings and able to tell the difference between this guy who wants to wear a wig and this guy who shuns it, I developed a craving to learn more. Ms. Welch gave me just enough information to peak my interest, but never enough to fully understand and drove me after finishing the first book to want the second.
I do admit that I had prior knowledge that this was going to be at least a three part story and expected open questions at the end, but what I did not expect was a craving to know more and a genuine caring for Elzith.
This is not a book for people who read too quickly and want everything summed up in tidy package by the end. Instead it leaves things open for you to think about, ponder and question.
In short, I really liked it. And as a first book, I think it is fantastic.
decent first effort.......2005-07-07
Wow. There are very mixed reviews here, but I think the book was actually somewhere in between the extremes we're getting here on Amazon.
I had a difficult time getting through this; it felt a little like drudgery, and the reason that was so frustrating was because I was sure there was a complex, brilliantly subtle character study that could have been made with this material. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
1. Elzith Kar is unbelievably boring, not in what she does - she's pretty kickass - but in her development as a person. She's broken, unable to feel except to fear, a little - what she calls the 'hole in her head' (which she can hide), and seemingly unredeemable. This would have potential if it wasn't a 1st-person narrative, but the voice the reader is most intimately aware of is hers, and as she can't feel anything it's difficult for her to convey any feeling to the reader. (Well, except for an "aww, she can't feel. That's sad." I wanted more.)
As for the idea that her tortured past alone makes her original or developed - well, no. It doesn't. It's been done, to death, but for some reason I liked her anyway. Probably because she never once lied to herself.
2. And Tod Redtanner. I actually think he's the more interesting character, here - we have more evidence of him changing throughout his life, as a reaction to various events. This differs from Elzith because we don't see her at all before her loss of emotions, and she gets them back just enough to feel only that specific loss - her character is constant. So Tod is developed, but...he's every bit as boring as Elzith - just in the completely opposite way. Elzith's type of character has been done a million times in fiction; Tod's has been done a million times in real life. He's very average.
The only thing even remotely interesting about these characters is that they met each other.
3. Aaaand the setting. The world they live in has slowly gone to hell and it's slowly getting worse. The dangers in rigidity of the law is a premise with a lot of potential, and this is where I was hoping for more. I was sure something fascinating was going on, but Ms Welch didn't extrapolate enough. I have a working knowledge of this fantasy world and governmental structure, but no appreciation for its subtleties.
I wouldn't say the book is flat, but it's not fully developed either - somewhere smack in the middle, maybe two-dimensional. If it had been a little longer (and I'd been able to get better acquainted with some of the secondary characters - I really wanted to like Loyd, Justice Paloman and Aron Jannes, to name a few examples), it could have been a terrific book. But then, I suppose it could have truly flopped, instead.
It's a good book, and worth a read, but maybe not worth purchasing. Check it out at the library, and watch for later books - the writing definitely has potential.
If you're interested in the same type of lead character, try the Kushiel series (and no, not just because of the same cover artist, for Chrissake). If you're looking for subtle, pervasive character development (although there are big world-changing events happening too), I'd recommend Robin Hobb.
Getting it right........2004-07-14
I looked at the reviews on this book after checking out info on when Ms Welch's new book is coming out. I find baseless accusations in the reviews currently on the page. Flat characters-convoluted plot-it's not Kushiel's series. First, if you can't get past the fact that 1. Cover artists rarely read the book, and can do covers for more than just one author, and 2. Michelle M. Welch is not Jacqueline Carey, you may be in for a disappointment. As for Flat characters-I don't see how a recovering alcoholic, who's taking it one day at a time is flat, perhaps a little boring, yes, but not flat. A spy, who was thrown in a dumpster as an infant, forced to grow up in a shadowy underworld and who is thus, left cold and logical with few emotions, are flat characters. Maybe I'm just too thick, but I'm seeing depth. Convoluted? The story is well developed, it's set in the middle of a world with a deeper history than you get to see in a single story-Perhaps this is too much for an average reader to grasp. Wait, I'm an average reader, so it can't be that. Choppy. Yes, you win. It's a little uncomfortable to read, but I believe this is by design. You aren't supposed to be comfortable reading this. You're supposed to see hopelessness, and possibly a little gleam at the end, where the future is unclear. I look forward to the second book "The Bright and the Dark", which Amazon claims is coming out soon.
Fantasy is not just wizards and kings.......2004-07-14
I have one question for the reviewer from BC Canada: who put him in charge of the genre? No, "Confidence Game" is nothing like the Kushiel books. It owes more to magic realism than epic fantasy. All the books that reviewer recommends are epic fantasy. That's comparing apples to oranges. "Confidence Game" is subtle and different. Some of us like different.
Disapointing.......2004-06-27
As much as i wanted to enjoy this book I just could not get involved because of the convoluted and choppy structure. There were no real emotions to the characters, and the setting was flat and tedious.

Realistic movement activities that include all..........2007-07-19
I ordered a few books similar to this one but I am most impressed with this book. The activities seem realistic to do even with a larger number of children. You don't need a bunch of complicated equipment either. Some games require beanbags, balls, hoola-hoops, jump ropes, or nothing at all. Some games are the traditional ones like Duck, Duck, Goose, Red Light, Green Light, and Hot Potato but are modified a little bit to keep all the children engaged. The book is organized nicely and the instructions for each game is simple and easy to understand. I am looking forward to implementing these activities in my classroom.
a resource guide for movement activities.......2006-08-21
This book was informative and offered many activites that would enhance an early education movement program.

Tag, you're it! In Playful Parenting, Lawrence Cohen demonstrates that parents need to lighten up and spend a few hours giggling with their kids. Play is inherently educational for children, he claims, and parents can learn plenty by examining the games kids play--from peekaboo to practical jokes.
Cohen is quick to point out that no matter what your child's temperament, she has a playful side. In its most basic form, play is a way to communicate. The author examines, with plenty of hilarious personal anecdotes, the details of play at every age and across genders. From his daughter and a new male friend discussing how "cool" nuclear weapons are and how "gross" a love song is, to a younger child zooming full-speed around a park at a birthday party, we're shown the exuberant truth behind playing: not only is it just plain fun, it can spark a variety of important sensations. One short section discusses the common phenomenon of happy giggling turning instantly to tears. Cohen suggests that "the fun play opens the emotional door to let out the giggles, and a flood of other feelings come pouring out after." Some specific ideas for games are included, and you'll find recommendations for everything from play wrestling to gentle storytelling. One chapter focuses on how to cope with play you don't find enjoyable, and how learning to appreciate these games can lead to surprising emotional insights. This is where Cohen's years of practice come in handy--it may be true that we all play, but not everyone immediately grasps the underlying messages. This is not simply a book filled with family activities, but rather an exploration of play for all ages. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Parents have heard that play is a child's work--but play is not for kids only. As psychologist Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., demonstrates in this delightful new book, play can be the basis for an innovative and rewarding approach to parenting. From eliciting a giggle during baby's first game of peek-a-boo to cracking jokes with a teenager while hanging out at the mall, Playful Parenting is a complete guide to using play to raise strong, confident children.
Have you ever stepped back to watch what really goes on when your children play? As Dr. Cohen points out, play is children's complex and fluid way of exploring the world, communicating hard-to-express feelings, getting close to those they care about, working through stressful situations, and simply blowing off steam. That's why "playful parenting" is so important and so successful in building strong, close bonds between parents and children. Through play we join our kids in their world. We help them express and understand deep emotions, foster connection, aid the process of emotional healing--and have a great time ourselves while we're at it.
Anyone can be a playful parent--all it takes is a sense of adventure and a willingness to let down your guard and try something new. After identifying why it can be hard for adults to play, Dr. Cohen discusses how to get down on the floor and join children on their own terms. He covers games, activities, and playful interactions that parents can enjoy with children of all ages, whether it's gazing deep into a baby's eyes, playing chase with a toddler, fantasy play with a grade schooler, or reducing a totally cool teenager to helpless laughter.
Playful Parenting also includes illuminating chapters on how to use play to build a child's confidence and self-esteem, how to play through sibling rivalry, and how play can become a part of loving discipline. Written with love and humor, brimming with good advice and revealing anecdotes, and grounded in the latest research, Playful Parenting will make you laugh even as it makes you wise in the ways of being a happy, effective, enthusiastic parent.

A truly excellent book.......2007-08-01
Mr. Cohen brings to light important and practical ways to get closer to your children. This book -- based both on sound research and everyday applications -- will be a great help to any parent who desires closer bonds with their child. After all, parenting should be fun and Cohen teaches the reader how be a thinking and playful companion to a child.
Great Book.......2007-07-20
I love this book!!!!!!
I read Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn and loved it, but I felt I needed ideas on alternatives to punishments and rewards because you can't always reason with a 2 year old. This book was just what I needed. It has given me great ideas on handeling situations with my toddler. Instead of things turning into a power struggle we are now being silly and laughing.
We liked the concept.......2007-04-07
My husband was already practicing "Playful Parenting" but I am sure others would benefit from some of the concepts presented. We have connected with our adopted daughter through playful parenting-she is very attached to us.
this book is awesome.......2007-03-24
I am so glad I found this book in a local library. However, it is so chock full of ideas to use that I think I need to buy it, because my child is just a baby now and I need to remember the many ideas as she grows. I will be re-reading it often I can tell. There's a lot in this book, all helpful, and especially touching is his advice on what not to do. As a child, my parents thought locking me in my room was good discipline. I don't forget that and needless to say our relationship is not good to this day. It's hard reading this book because my parents did a lot of the things he highlights as things to avoid, and I have to put the book down often because it's too much to digest emotionally. I wish I had had an ideal childhood, but this insightful book can help me ensure that I don't repeat those mistakes. I'm very thankful I came across it.
I love this book, learn to romp with your kids!.......2007-01-31
I've always thought wrestling with your kids was good, and I was very glad to find a book that actually agreed and gave explanations for why this is so. It truly helps with teaching about giving people space, being gentle and sharing; my son is one of the most non-confrontational in his playgroup, and I know it's in part because of the things we've taught him from this book. I love it!
