We've all been there: We know we must confront a coworker, store clerk, or friend about some especially sticky situation--and we know the encounter will be uncomfortable. So we repeatedly mull it over until we can no longer put it off, and then finally stumble through the confrontation. Difficult Conversations, by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen, offers advice for handling these unpleasant exchanges in a manner that accomplishes their objective and diminishes the possibility that anyone will be needlessly hurt. The authors, associated with Harvard Law School and the Harvard Project on Negotiation, show how such dialogues actually comprise three separate components: the "what happened" conversation (verbalizing what we believe really was said and done), the "feelings" conversation (communicating and acknowledging each party's emotional impact), and the "identity" conversation (expressing the situation's underlying personal meaning). The explanations and suggested improvements are, admittedly, somewhat complicated. And they certainly don't guarantee positive results. But if you honestly are interested in elevating your communication skills, this book will walk you through both mistakes and remedies in a way that will boost your confidence when such unavoidable clashes arise. --Howard Rothman

"What is a difficult conversation? Asking for a raise. Ending a relationship. Saying ""no"" to your boss or spouse. Confronting disrespectful behavior. Apologizing. Conversations we dread, and often handle clumsily as a result, are part of all our lives: in boardrooms and family rooms, across the negotiation table and the dinner table. Now, Difficult Conversations teaches us how to handle these dialogues with more success and less anxiety. How does it work? Based on fifteen years of research and consultations with thousands of people, Difficult Conversations pinpoints what works. The authors discovered that regardless of context, the same small but crucial errors are what trip us up--and a few key adjustments can make all the difference. * The role of emotions--ours and theirs * The impact of what is said and what is not said * Why admitting our mistakes will put us in a stronger position * The truth behind the myth that women are better at expressing their emotions than men * How to respond productively in the face of personal attacks Who is this for? Filled with examples from everyday life, Difficult Conversations is certain to be an instant and lasting classic for families, neighbors, bosses, employees, customers, tenants, landlords, psychologists, teachers, and more. Who are the authors? Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen teach at Harvard Law School and at the Harvard Negotiation Project. They have consulted to countless businesspeople, governments, organizations, and communities including all parties to the negotiations on constitutional transition in South Africa; school teachers in Medellin, Colombia; and community leaders and the police department in Springfield, Massachusetts. They lecture throughout the world and have written on negotiation, conflict resolution, and communication. Bruce Patton is co-author of Getting to Yes."

This little book can be a great help. We all have avoided conversations we knew were going to be difficult. Often not talking made things worse, so as things became intolerable we had the discussion and things got even worse. These authors break down the inner structure of difficult conversations and how we often mishandle them. They then show us the ways in which we can turn this into a constructive process that brings more understanding, greater cooperation, and learning that will help avoid repeating the difficulties in the future.

Certainly, I can't recap the whole book in this little review, but I especially like their concept of three conversations happening within each difficult conversation. They are the debate over what happened, the feelings conversation, and the identity issues. In the what happened conversation the problem is that each side assumes it knows the truth, that they know the other party's intentions, and that they know where and how to assign blame. Of course, all this is a fiction and a waste of time. It does nothing to fix the situation or improve the process to avoid the problem in the future. The book then shows you how to have a constructive approach to the same problem. Excellent stuff!

The authors are part of the Harvard Negotiation Project and has a foreword by one of the authors of the famous book, "Getting to Yes". The book is concise, but full of very good information. I recommend it very much.

Difficult Conversations, by Stone, Patton, and Heen, is a foundational book in the literature of holding difficult conversations in purposeful ways. I have read it often and use its principles in my teaching and in daily life. Underlying its principles is the simple understanding that we can get better at listening, talking, and acknowledging what is actually going on in our relationships; that we create the reality of our lives by the ways in which we talk about it; and that one conversation at a time, we can choose to work with the energy of conflict instead of avoiding it. There are many good books on this topic. I suggest reading them all, starting here.

5 out of 5 stars Lively Success Literature.......2007-08-16

This is the type of book that keeps on giving and requires continual review over one's career. W. Clement Stone writes from a perspective of first hand knowledge in a lively and dynamic candor that doesn't motivate, but rather gives you the tools to motivate yourself. Although some of the language is archaic, the principles are sound. Give it a try.

    5 out of 5 stars Concrete Wisdom..........2007-06-13

With so many "self help" books available these days, it's great to finally find one that, figuratively speaking, puts its money where its mouth is!
    W. Clement Stone was the epitome of enduring and selfless, and his legacy of philanthropic endeavors continue to uplift long after his death.

If you're interested in developing drive that will take you places, there is no better example than Stone himself.

Every person should own a copy of this book!

4 out of 5 stars Easy reading for the college student about to burn out.......2007-04-12

I bought this book after I looked up the many quotes used in the "The Secret". I found W. Clement Stones stories to be very insiprational, a light easy read as I eased my self into a days study of corporate income tax. There are many sales techniques that one can pick up reading this book that are so simple, but I guess they are just those things, those simple things that people need to repete in your head for you to ever remember.

I especially recommend this book for College students to keep with them before finals, its a nice way to start your day of studying.

5 out of 5 stars the success system that never fails.......2007-03-20

The best book ever written. There should be 7 billion copies printed and handed to every person in the world to read . . . the world would infinitely better if everyone did.

5 out of 5 stars 1 Good Reason to Read Is It NEVER Fails.......2005-05-27

If W. Clement Stone lived for over 100 years I am willing to accept that the principles of this book have worked far longer than I have had time to experience. But one year from now I will be able to testify that I have successfully seen all the successes of practicing these principles and all the failures of not practicing them as well for over twenty years.

    W. Clement Stone & I attended the same High School but during different times and I'm sure that in my days of living on the North side of Chicago that I actually walked across some of the same sidewalks and pathways that he traveled. I experienced seeing the insurance empire he created in Combined Insurance. Many days I walked passed this building as a Senn High School student but it was not until I read his book "The Success System That Never Fails" ten years after I graduated from High School that I realized how much W. Clement Stone had an amazing mind.

So when I recommend this book to you it is not just out of having read it but also out of having seen with my own eyes some of the communities and some of the lives W. Clement Stone touched.

This is a great book written with valuable easy to read illustrations that move the heart and inspire the emotions. If you want to learn how to experience future abundance and the fact that it takes less work to succeed than to fail you've just considered the right book for you.

Learning how to use the power of the will while developing the true understanding of know-how has brought me huge benefits and it all came from this book. Some other real powerful things you will learn from this book are:

How to Get a Person to Listen to You.
    Using Positive Statements.
    Taking Inventory of Yourself.
    Developing a Time Recorder.
    Doing The Right Thing.
Learning From The Experience of Others.
It's Never to Late to Learn.
    Enthusiasim Attracts.
    A Blueprint For Success
If You Want Something, Go For It.

Well this is only a few of the things that you will learn from a man who set a goal to live for 100 years and achieved it. Now it's your time to succeed, it's your time to experience greatness and truly consider the real truth that you too like W.Clement Stone were born for great things. Don't take my word for it read the book today.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those entering their 3rd age or their retirement zone.......2006-07-23

I found this book to be a concise, easy to read book about the joys and opportunities to be found in this stage of our life. Howard and Marika explore topics that a near and dear to us, that we must pay attention to if we wish to make this journey look like what we have always hoped for. Sometimes we all need a map to get us where we want to be!

    5 out of 5 stars A Purpose-Filled Life.......2005-06-14

The book, Too Young to Retire, as well as the Stone's web site and book study groups, is their effort to teach people how to live a life filled with purpose, rather than the emptiness of so many retirees' lives.

The book begins with an introduction to the Stones and how they arrived at the attitude that they did. It then dives right into the largest problem that retirees face - money. If you ask most people approaching retirement age what they fear most about retirement, running out of money is tied with poor health. The Stones tackle the problem face on, correctly stating the "it is much less risky to worry about money than to face the volcanic changes of midlife and beyond." Once the discussion is concluded, they suggest several techniques to put money in its place, including the tried and true method of keeping a daily record of how you spend your money.

Not content with tackling retirement, the Stones next look at the world of work and why work isn't working. They cite many of the same ills that books such as Take Back Your Time discuss: too little vacation, too much pressure, too little fulfillment and more. The book quotes Rutgers University's Heldrich Center for Workforce Development study, "Most workers see their 'retirement' not as a time for leisure and travel, but as an opportunity to do fulfilling work, and find avocation in what they do." The end of the chapter offers methods to work through to who you really are. These are good starting places, but the more hard-core 9-5ers might need a little more work. The Stone's suggestion to hire a personal coach, even for a little while, is a good one.

The book is complete with pages and pages of resources. More can be found at their website.

If retirement is in your future, this book is a great place to begin the process.

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Money and Skip This One.......2004-01-30

Unless you are a far-left political idealist; "open-minded," as Mr. and Mrs. Stone say, their book offers little useful information for retirees.

5 out of 5 stars Especially for anyone over the age of 62.......2003-09-21

Motivational speaker Howard Stone and yoga teacher Marika Stone team up in Too Young To Retire: An Off-The-Road Map To The Rest Of Your Life to present readers with a down-to-earth instructional guide which is drawn from the authors own lives as a couple, their research, and several assorted case histories in order to present practical and effective alternatives to retirement -- including stimulating work and community service. From opportunities to earn money or participate in business, to volunteering one's time, to traveling for fun and profit, Too Young To Retire is an exciting and dynamic self-help instructional guide for charting new possibilities for the future and highly recommended reading -- especially for anyone over the age of 62 and not ready for the rocking chair/nursing home slide into oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars Why Retire when you can Review?.......2003-07-29

"It is already clear the 21st Century will demand more of all of us, young or old. The gifts we are given ? longevity, better health, education and financial resources ? come with responsibility. After all, we have inherited and even helped create a world that needs our wisdom, experience, and compassion now."

I've always thought the idea of retiring to be a strange concept. Why would you just give up your entire life? Even if you gave up your job should there not be other interests you would pursue, perhaps even more aggressively than your previous job.

It has been said that a "hobby" is more the man than his "job." I jest not when I say reviewing can be quite a great job/hobby.

The authors explain how to awaken the inner activist or volunteer. Chapter 5 gives a list of 101 Opportunities you could pursue. I know for sure there is a need for professional people who can keep giving their talents to society. Some of the ideas include:

    Relocation Specialist
    Personal Coach
    Home Tutor
    Travel Writer
    Yoga Teacher
    Massage Therapist
    Author
    Executive chef
    Cabaret Singer

You might be thinking, "Hey, those sound more fun than what I'm doing now!" I personally like the "author" and "massage therapist" idea.

The authors explain how life is uncharted territory. How we live in a culture preoccupied with wealth. Are we not living our lives to find our deepest purpose?

    The Contents Include:

Money - The Prose of Life
    It's Not Working
It Is Working - Volunteering Revisited
    101 Opportunities for the Open-Minded
    Toward Wellness
    Radical Departures
    Resources

After you read this book, you will wonder if retirement really represents the "good life."

Well if you take Chapter 7 into account and start traveling the world, this might be just the bliss your soul has been craving. I also "loved" the idea of becoming a care taker. Who would not want to go live in a beautiful location as a property manager?

This book is about living in the moment and seeing your new freedom as an excuse to do exactly what you love.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Method in Self Awareness.......2005-03-21

Excellent book. The book does not directly explain at first what it is trying to entail, but as the reader digresses through the various voice dialogues with the interviewer or facilitator, the development of the larger picture is perceived. And I must say, this particular model has stuck with me for quite some time in many other books and teachings I have read, as well as personally experienced in my life. This book really does convey a rather substantial paradgm of human psychology.

The ideas conveyed in this book is that of each individual consists of multiple energies or self personalities, each conveying a different part of ourselves. With such voice dialogues, the awareness level of our consciousness increases, our aware ego or observer ego has the ability to gain awareness and perceive silent separateness from our divided energies. We become able to bring or higher selves to obtain an observer's view of our various selves, both the energies we use to control and depend on, as well as those we repress and disown. Anotherwards, it opens us up in awareness to ourselves. We become aware of our hidden observer where we can objectively view all of our different energy patterns or personalities which we use and depend on and those we reject and disown.

What is conveyed is how we are to cease repressing our disowned selves, by honoring and listening to such demonic parts of ourselves, while at the same time, continuing to let our positive energies that we currently use to guide us to continually do so. Throughout the book conversations are conveyed which portray the most common various personalities most of us have.

At the end of the book, the last chapter has a wonderful illustration on Greek mythology and the parallel of a disowned personality, as in the case of Apollo disowning Dionysus and the story of King Pentheus and his denial and disowning of the new god, Dionysus and the disastrous outcome from repressing and disowning this new god.

Based on the most successful mind development program in the world today, You the Healer offers a complete course in Silva Method healing techniques in a do-it-yourself, forty-day format. By reading one chapter a day and doing the indicated exercises, you can be firmly on the path to wellness in just six weeks. In You the Healer Jose Silva and Robert B. Stone offer a proven method of attuning to the special mind frequency called alpha. In this alpha frequency, a healing state is activated. These lower-frequency alpha brain waves can be used to achieve maximum well-being; they can be applied to healing yourself as you work with your health-care professional; and they can be used to help you heal others. Included are inspirational stories of people who have successfully used this method to regain their health after illness or injury.

Go ahead and buy it if you must. Everyone should read a Silva book once in their lives. Do you pick up the supermarket tabloids now and then to laugh at their audaciousness and wonder exactly what sort of people actually take them seriously? If so, I know you'll enjoy this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Mind & Energy Control.......2006-10-19

I am only maybe 1/5 of the way into this book, but can tell you already that I highly recommend it. As a Reiki practitioner, I understand the concepts of energy and hands-on-healing, so I was receptive to the book before I received it. I have also been interested in and a believer in using the mind constructively throughout my entire life. I am also heavily into positive affirmations and visualization, and have taught some of these techniques to others in classes. This is a great book which teaches you how you can actively participate in pursuing far better health than you have probably ever dreamed of. Most people do not seem to really understand how really effective we can be at creating or preventing our health problems. Isn't it worth approximately ten bucks to find out how you can be healthier and happier for the rest of your life? Read it, practice it, and BELIEVE. I no longer have colds/flu, even when exposed to people with them. I have eliminated several medical conditions. Is it because of exercise and weight loss alone? Some may tell you that. The power within your mind, and self talk is astounding! Many now realize that. Neuro-linguistic programming (positive self-talk)is a mega $$$ business for a reason. Know also that negative self-talk can also have a profound effect on you, one that you do NOT want, so be careful what you "say" to yourself and about yourself, even in jest. Take this seriously.

Read this book and also check out books/CDs by Wayne Dyer. Check out the Silva DVDs/Cassettes recorded by Silva's daughter to meditate with. The down side of the book is that you cannot read meditations and do them at the same time, but what you could do with this book is to get yourself an inexpensive voice recorder and read the meditations onto the recorder. Then you could practice the meditations easier. If you do not have a soft voice, find a friend to record them for you.

Update, August 2007: Just returned from a Silva class in Pittsburg. It was wonderful! Did lots of meditations, like those in the book. Lots of visualizations, and lots of psychic/intuitive practice. You can find Silva classes online.

By the way, an important note is that with Silva techniques, there is an expectation that they be used for the betterment of all. If your intent is other than that, they probably will NOT work for you. I hate to mention that, but sometimes people want to use psychic powers to rip other people off or for self-centered reasons. There was someone in class who, it appeared, wanted to use Silva techniques to become a millionaire. It don't exactly work that way, Hon. (The person seemed to have difficulty doing the exercises, too.)

We're all in this together, folks. The correct concept is peace and love. That is the ONLY way to move forward, in my opinion of course.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - Unbelieveable - Truly a Miracle.......2001-08-19

This book is a must-have for the betterment of humanity. Not only does it explain how you can heal yourself, but how you can heal and help others at a distance through the proper use of mental imaging. It leads you step by step through an inspiring 40 day workout where it explains not only HOW you can accomplish these miracles, but more importantly, WHY it works, and it makes sense! You can begin using these techniques immediately and see impressive results. It allows you to discover your "true purpose in life" - to help your fellow man. Along with attempting to help others, anonymously, who are in need, I send this book to them anonymously, then sit back and watch the results. This is the most positive, uplifting book ever written. The author is a true inspirational genius. Could you imagine what a wonderful paradise we would all live in if everybody practiced these techniques.

    Book Description

Women are naturally healers. Throughout time, they have performed curative roles as mothers, midwives, caregivers, and wisewomen, but modern medicine has suppressed this important tradition. Ancient women healers knew that the body is more than what is seen: through body, emotions, mind, and spirit, we can connect with the Goddess and actively choose to heal ourselves and others. By relearning and using ancient skills like aura and chakra work, creative visualization, meditation, laying on of hands, psychic healing, and working with crystals and gemstones, women can prevent or transform many dis-eases of the body and spirit before they become matters for modern medicine.

In THE WOMEN'S BOOK OF HEALING, Diane Stein, author of the best-selling ESSENTIAL REIKI, demystifies, explains, and teaches these skills in ways that modern women can learn and use. She first introduces basic healing, then applies those skills to healing with crystals and gemstones—a beautiful, effective, and empowering aspect of the ancient woman's healing methods. A comprehensive guide from a knowledgeable healer, THE WOMEN'S BOOK OF HEALING proves that well-being is within a woman's choice and natural abilities, and reaffirms her timeless role as healer of herself and others.

5 out of 5 stars Finding What Was Meant For You.......1999-12-26

I just got the book and immediately checked out the high points, reading the prologue, bits here and there, etc. I knew this was something I could get into. Diane Stein has put into words the same conclusions that it has taken me years to reach. I have not read the entire book, but I will devour every word. The main topic, explanatory from the title, is woman's place in healing, that woman has always been a healer.

She has sections about auras and laying on of hands, of crystals and gemstones and their powers. My sister was in a head-on collision the first of June. It's a miracle she's alive. I took her a necklace of amethyst, which is a healing stone, and it is really making a difference. Diane also has a section on chakras and colors. I am not yet familiar with chakras, but I know from experience the power of color therapy. My bedroom is done in shades of blue and I have a sound-effects machine that simulates the ocean. Oh, yes, it works!

I highly recommend this book, even though so far I have just skimmed off the overflow. Another plus - she expresses herself in plain English. There is not a lot of technical jargon to plow through and say, "Say What? " If I could only keep one of my Christmas gifts, this would be it. Thanks for listening to me.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any woman........1999-03-31

This book teachs you how to heal yourself. It works. I highly recomend it for any woman looking to take charge of their own health.

3 out of 5 stars Informative but sometimes a little irritating.......1998-09-25

I bought this book because it covered a wider range of crystals than the only other crystal-healing book I had, (Crystal Enlightenment by Katrina Raphaell). However, I have found I use Stein's book far less. It crams a great deal of information about a wide range of crystals: however depth is often sacrificed as she goes from one crystal to another in a few words. Because of this information-density it can be hard to find what you are looking for. There is an index but it's not uncommon to look up several entries on the same stone, only to find lots of short, not very informative mentions. Tighter structuring or indexing would have helped greatly.

I also found the women-only tone a little irritating at times. I consider myself to be a feminist but did not feel it needed to be marketed as a specifically "womens" book. I did not feel there was information in there that warrented a separatist approach. She had a tendency to generalise about the nature of women-as-healers in a utopian way, which I thought was unrealistic and also a little suffocating.

Diane Stein has improved as a writer since then: for those who are interested in other forms of healing, "Essential Reiki" is a great, ground-breaking book. (She also tones down the preachiness for that one). For a book on crystals, however, I'd recommend Katrina Raphaell's "Crystal Enlightenment" far more.

    Book Description

Policing is a consuming profession with incredibly high elements of stress. Research suggests that police divorce rates are more than double the national average of ordinary marriages. The spouse's fear of physical danger, adjusting to shift work, transfers and changes in the officers' personality are only a few of the contributing factors, but the most crucial problem is the breakdown of communication within the relationship. From the beginning of the officers' careers they are trained to control their emotions, and thus are accused of being cold-hearted. Spouses agree that law enforcement officers grapple with the real-life horrors on the job and that the bitter belief that 'cops don't cry' is sadly untrue.

4 out of 5 stars Good for new police wives/families.......2005-09-29

I have been married to a police officer for 8 years. I finally decided to read a book dedicated to police families to try to make sense of some of the issues that only a police family will have to deal with. This book was terrific!

    4 out of 5 stars a readable useful book.......2003-05-18

For COPS DON'T CRY, Canadian Vali Stone conducted interviews from which she has quoted extensively & surveys & added them to her own personal experience within the distinctive lifestyle of the police community, to bring together her information & insights into how to sustain a supportive & enduring marriage & family life.

Vali Stone makes no bones about it: When your spouse is presenting symptoms of job-related stress, she repeatedly urges you to get help immediately, as she did. Doing nothing about it will not make it "go away" & will, ultimately, ensure defeat of your marriage.

COPS DON'T CRY is a serious & good book, no matter which profession you or your spouse is in. Listening to what spouses have said about being married to a policeman, is both engaging & eye-opening. It is a look at how couples live together, through better or worse, & what those old-fashioned attributes such as loyalty, compassion, & living a public life can be.

    Well done! Highly recommended.

      Book Description

More than seventy-five teens from across the country were interviewed on a range of topics and issues: parents, friends, sports, clothes, school violence and peer pressure. With the passion and frustration expressed by teens in their narratives, as well as in their artwork and poetry, this book is a unique combination of original teen contributions and effective stress- and anger-management techniques from a mental-health professional. Most important, it was designed expressly for teens. Hot Stones and Funny Bones is divided in three sections. "Telling It Like It Is" highlights problems and issues that nearly every teen faces in the middle- and high-school years, expressed in their own voices. The second section, "The Best Way to Cope with Stress", offers a host of coping skills and relaxation techniques for teens to utilize, ranging from ways to boost self-esteem and effective anger-management skills, to meditation and creative expression. The third section, "Final Comments From Teens", reveals opinions, lessons learned and advice to parents and teenagers about the struggles and triumphs of teen years. In addition, every chapter includes "Thoughts, Reflections and Action Plans", where teens can process what they've learned, using the information to make healthy behavioral changes. With all the stress and gamut of emotions in our hectic-and at times chaotic-world, this book will be a hit with teens trying to make sense of it all and stay sane at the same time.

      Book Description

Photos of author/originator illustrate sequence of all 19 movements and 1 pose in this gentle moving meditation which circulates and balances internal energy. Along with brief written instructions, photos provide the reader with an easy way to follow the patterns from start to finish. Introductory sections and those at the end of the book include complete information on the background and philosophy of this holistic discipline which can aid in stress reduction, relaxation, and a number of other physical, mental, and spiritual conditions for which society seeks guidance. Mr. Stone emphasizes that T'ai Chi Chih makes no claims whatsoever about "curing" any condition, though he points to potential benefits of regular practice and relates stories of practitioners who have attributed various kinds of improvement to T'ai Chi Chih.

The author explains how to do the Great Circle Meditation, a seated meditation that complements T'ai Chi Chih/Joy thru Movement, another way of circulating, stimulating and balancing the chi (internal energy).

      4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to others.......2006-06-01

I am writing in response to the person who left a comment on July 23, 2002. This person does not know what they are talking about. There are two forms of Tai Chi. One is this book, which is a easier method to learn. The other is Tai Chi Ch'uan, which is a more experienced version. If this person has read as many books as they say they have, they would know that. This is a good book.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent qigong.......2005-04-30

Clearly, some who have rated the book low haven't taken the time for even the most cursory examination. They object that it is not "Tai Chi Chuan". Of course not, it is "Tai Chi Chih" and a quick reading of the introduction will reveal both the intent and the origin of Tai Chi Chih. I don't believe there is any attempt to mislead here, nor is the title a cynical marketing ploy.

What Tai Chi Chih is is an excellent qigong set designed entirely for health and meditation and which can provide many benefits of the far more difficult Tai Chi Chuan. It is very gentle and can be performed by almost anyone.

I have studied Tai Chi Chuan and a number of other qigong systems and have a strong basis for comparison. Different qigongs seem to produce different "qualities" or feelings/vibrations of qi. I find the effect of Tai Chi Chih to be quite perceptible, very pleasantly physical, very detoxifying, like a deep internal massage. Just a few days of practice begins to yield more energy and a feeling of more ease and balance. It circulates the qi very effectively and leaves my abdomen and back feeling very open, springy, and unravelled. The rocking on the feet draws up earth qi which is circulated within via arm movements.

Tai Chi Chuan feels a lot like this, when practiced correctly, but is more difficult to achieve. When practiced incorrectly, I have found it can actually exacerbate tension and energy blockages in the body.

Take time to study the movements of Tai Chi Chih and practice them for many days before making your own evaluation. It would be better still to learn from one of several videotapes on Tai Chi Chih.

1 out of 5 stars Tai Chi Chih!: Joy Thru Movement.......2005-02-16

I am a taijiquan instructor and would advise anyone to be very warry of this title. The statement, "...complete information on the background and philosophy of this holistic discipline..." sent a big red flag up for me. Taijiquan was developed as a martial (fighting) art, not a "holistic discipline". Doing taiji will give you health benefits from the physical exersize, and through increased qi (chi) circulation (which must be taught), but it is not the primary reason the art was developed. If you are more interested in health/qi benefits, then get a book on qigong. There are many books that are far better than this one, buy authors that really know what they are talking about. One of them is Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming. Any of his books, tapes, or DVS's would be highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars A great Book Despite the Confusing Title.......2004-01-10

Sure, the title has "Tai Chi" in it and it really is't a Tai Chi book in the usual sense. Go beyond the title and you find Stone has given us a marvelous set of Chi Kung exercises that anyone can do.

The author realized that most people just do not have the discipline and patience to learn Tai Chi. So he took his years of experience among Chi Kung Masters, produced 19 forms that move the Chi and gave it as a gift to all of us.If you do not want to do Tai Chi, but want its benefits get this book or even better the tape.

Stone is an interesting sincere guy who has led a remarkable life. Read the description of his spiritual writings and background on other areas of Amazon.

So he shouldn't have called it Tai Chi Chih. So what. Other authors have done the same, "Tai Chi Chi Kung" Or Tai Chi that or Tai Chi this- not uncommon. It sells exercise books.

1 out of 5 stars This is not T'ai Chi Ch'uan.......2002-07-24

If you want to learn T'ai Chi Ch'uan, look somewhere else.
I am not quite sure what the author was trying to achieve. Probaby trying to create his own style of Qigong and give it a marketable name. It is very misleading.
It appears to be a money making endevour as far as I can determine from related sites on the web.
I have over a hundred T'ai Chi Ch'uan books in my library, this is NOT one of them.
