5 out of 5 stars One of the best introductions.......2007-07-13

I was skeptical about this book after buying it at a used book store, yes they still exist. Handwritten font, pictures and an incredibly wide range of topics and an author I wasn't very familiar with. Once I started into it I basically inhaled it. This has to be the best introduction to philosophy you could wish for. Compared to Scruton's or Warburton's respectable books for example this book is really a unique piece of work. The drawings are incredibly humorous and the expertly distilled presentations and conclusions are light enough somehow that you can read huge swaths of this book in a sitting.

I recommend you reread the book a few months later and on the 2nd reading spend more time on the quoted text and less on the authors conclusions. This is totally appropriate for bright and curious high school age kids or their older comrades.

After this book personally I would then move on to Warbuton and Scruton and then on to Russell.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2006-04-01

I purchased this book for my Philosophy class and I must say it is a very easy text to understand. The illustrations help dirve points that would normally be overlooked. I enjoyed this book a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Philosophy.......2003-09-22

This book is an excellent introduction to philosophy. The author makes complex philosophical problems relatively clear without sacrificing their inherent complexity, and he organizes philosophers and philosophies according to their response to various philosophical problems. His writing is fair and honest and he does not appear to have an axe to grind. The illustrations are both humorous and really helpful. It is through books like this that anyone can gain insight into the importance of philosophy and its ramifications in daily life.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, yet Serious Introduction to Philosopy.......2003-04-30

This topical introduction has hundreds of humorous illustrations drawn by the author. Writing in an engaging conversational style, he presents the issues typically covered in introductory courses, but with unusual clarity. I used the first edition several times as the core text for my Introduction to Philosophy class with great success.

Those who have read the first edition will miss the wonderful handwritten script. It has been replaced by a font called Tekton that is, unfortunately, somewhat tiring to read.

4 out of 5 stars A fun introduction.......2001-10-14

This book is probably as good as any other general overview of philosophical ideas. It covers epistemology, ontology, religion, freedom, ethics, political and social philosophy, and art. Donald Palmer includes some people quite a lot (Plato, Marx, Freud, Sartre) while there are many philosophers who are not mentioned at all, but considering the number of philosophers and their numerous ideas, this may not be a fair objection.

What makes this book different from others is that it is very light reading. It isn't condescending, or excessively simple, but Palmer writes in a conversational manner and with a frank, sometimes humorous tone. And you see how no philosophical ideas, however convincing, are free from being challenged and scrutinized. This may not be a book you refer to time and again, but for a relaxed and entertaining introduction to different branches of philosophy, Palmer does a fine job. Tedious and confusing language is something you won't have to worry about.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to Greek Mythology.......2007-08-16

I bought this book for my 5 year old and it hooked her right away. After a brief explanation of "how it all got started", there is approximately one page devoted to each god/goddess and at the top of each page it mentions who the parents are which is great to give a youngster an idea of how all these gods, goddesses and mortals fit together.
The picturess captured her attention and the level of detail is just enough so that she remembers the salient qualities of each character. After having read through this many times, I feel she will be more than ready to handle the next level of detail. If they only had Greek Myth. action figures, she'd be in heaven (or, I guess, Mt. Olympus)!

5 out of 5 stars The Gods and Goddesses of Olympus By Aliki.......2006-11-07

This is by the far the best book I have foud that explains the creation according to the Greeks. I have used it in my high school classroom as well as my junior high and it is always a hit. This book contains the origins of the universe starting with mother earth (Gaea) and father sky (Uranos), the birth and the reign of the Titans and the reing of the Olympians Gods when they took over the earth. It aslo gives a great and thorough introduction of each of the 14 Olympian gods that reign upon Olympus. The pictures are amazing. The whole book is a work of art!

5 out of 5 stars D'AULAIRES BOOK OF GREEK MYTHS.......2005-12-31

It is a beautiful book. I really like the picture of The Birth of Athena. The Athena in it is so cute. It has stuff like Gaea, Cronus and Rhea, Hestia and Zeus, Hades and so much more. You should read about Aphrodite and Eros (Cupid). Buy this book for any child. I am 7 and I love it. Enjoy this wonderful any age book.

4 out of 5 stars Great for kids.......2005-07-11

This is a great way to introduce kids to the stories of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. I remember reading this book as a kid time after time. To this day I am still fascinated by Greek Mythology.

Book Description

LOOK includes essays by actor Alec Baldwin, news anchor Katie Couric, pop culture commentator Simon Dumenco, fashion designers Heatherette, Fashion Week visionary Fern Mallis, fashion expert Patrick McDonald, socialite Tinsley Mortimer, editor of People Magazine Martha Nelson, and fashion designer Zac Posen.

Beginning in February 2005, famed portrait photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders began photographing the personalities of New York's Olympus Fashion Week in a specially designed photo studio backstage at Bryant Park. Over the course of three seasons, Greenfield-Sanders has photographed more than 200 famous faces. With LOOK: PORTRAITS BACKSTAGE AT OLYMPUS FASHION WEEK, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders continues his tradition of documenting the wide cast of characters that comprise a single industry. As he did with the art scene in ARTWORLD (Fotofolio, 1999) and porn stars in XXX: 30 PORN-STAR PORTRAITS (Bulfinch, 2004), Greenfield-Sanders now turns his lens on the fashion industry. LOOK captures the fabulous and fashionable who come together under the Bryant Park tents twice a year for New York Fashion Week. This commemorative photography book from one of the most prestigious photographers of our time offers unique insight into the personalities who make New York Fashion Week one of America's most exciting events. The limited first edition run of 2,500 copies includes portraits of Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria, Courteney Cox, Rosario Dawson, Paula Abdul, Hilary Duff, Jason Lewis, Kristin Davis, Marcia Gay Harden, Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Claire Danes, Anne Hathaway, Patricia Clarkson, Jake Shears, Jenna Jameson, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Betsey Johnson, Tommy Hilfiger, Oscar de la Renta, André Leon Talley, Hamish Bowles, and many, many more.

5 out of 5 stars A departure.......2006-10-26

Full disclosure: I know Timothy.

That said, though, I was honestly astonished at the difference between this series and the photographer's previous essays -- especially in the color. There's a blushy or even feverish tone running through every picture, and it's definitely not just the printing. People here really look the way they do at the shows -- flushed, pumped-up, and raring to rock, or shop, or put clothes on or off, or whatever.

Form aside, the content should make this book essential for anyone in or interested in the high-end garment trade. There are a few especially fashion-literate actors and other ante-camera celebrities here, but the emphasis is on people like, say, Kim Hastreiter or Stan Herman, who are immensely powerful in the industry but not often photographed, and then not usually very well. With all of these people together you get a vivid cross-section of what's really going on under the tents. Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Pure brilliance..........2006-09-28

Mr. Greenfield-Sanders has done it again. After such an insightful 'look' into the world of adult film with XXX, I was so pleased to see he was able to do the same with the fashion industry. The portraits are beautiful and the essays certainly add to the experience.

Book Description

In tracing the emergence of the Macedonian kingdom from its origins as a Balkan backwater to a major European and Asian power, Eugene Borza offers to specialists and lay readers alike a revealing account of a relatively unexplored segment of ancient history. He draws from recent archaeological discoveries and an enhanced understanding of historical geography to form a narrative that provides a material-culture setting for political events. Examining the dynamics of Macedonian relations with the Greek city-states, he suggests that the Macedonians, although they gradually incorporated aspects of Greek culture into their own society, maintained a distinct ethnicity as a Balkan people. "Borza has taken the trouble to know Macedonia: the land, its prehistory, its position in the Balkans, and its turbulent modern history. All contribute...to our understanding of the emergence of Macedon.... Borza has employed two of the historian's most valuable tools, autopsy and common sense, to produce a well-balanced introduction to the state that altered the course of Greek and Near Eastern history."--Waldemar Heckel, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

A must read.
Dispels many of the falsehoods propogated by the Greek government concerning the ancient kingdom of Macedon.

1 out of 5 stars Trying to prove what cant be prooved.......2007-01-11

Cypriots are Greeks that live in Cyprus. They share the same ancestors as the Greeks, same religion, customs, traditions. They feel and declare Greek.Cypriots speak an idiom of Greek which is described as Cyprus language.Although almost same with Greek language when they speak amongst them it is difficult to be understand by a non Cypriot. If someone tried to write a book about the Cypriots 2000 years from now and insisted that they are different nation because the other Greeks could not completely understand them when they spoke or because they referred to them as Cypriots would that be a logical argument?Borza is desperately trying to doubt thousands of other historians, proofs, ruins, sculptures, signs in order to make an outrageous claim and conclusion that the ancient Macedonians were not a Hellenic nation. He does not succeed so ofcourse , but he succeeded in making his statements a ''bible'' to F.Y.R.O.M. s pathetic propaganda and a quote in every F.Y.R.O.M.ian post over the web.I wonder if these people have ever read any other history book in their lives..

1 out of 5 stars Long Live The Hellenic Republic.......2004-12-15

The gov't of Skopie (FYROM) gives this clown (Mr Borza) money to write books about how Macedonians are not Greek. Sad, truly sad!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent but misrepresented work of scholarship .......2004-12-08

I bought this book expecting a major critique on the so-called "Greek position" and found nothing of the sort. Grossly misrepresented on both the internet and in other publications, Borza has often been presented as a staunch advocate for a position in the "Macedonian Question". The truth is virtually the opposite! Borza, as with all objective historians, takes no position on this topic other than providing an overview of recent historiography of the region, a topic to which some mention of the practice of nationalist history is usually indispensable.

The Focus of this book, not unlike the works of Hammond and Errington, is strictly on Macedonian history as historians, both modern and ancient, know it. This book however focuses on a much less-known period of Macedonian history, so those looking for an account on Alexander should look elsewhere. It is perhaps unusual how the book focuses on this history with much greater detail than other books, and the author has been overly commended for this effort. I will not dwell on the author here, but anyone who is vaguely aware of this subject should not need further convincing of his reputation and the respect he receives from others scholars within his field.

Since I choose to respect Amazon's reviewing system, I do not see the need to espouse my own opinions on the question of Macedonian ethnicity or further the agendas of those who do. It is clear that among most historians there is little disagreement on the subject other than on trivial matters of interpretation, and in any case the places where there seems to be conflicting opinions are of little relevance to the question of ethnicity. It is also here where evidence drastically diminishes to the extent that any objectivity dissolves into a polemic which needn't concern those interested in what the Macedonians themselves cared about. That said, the concurrence between Borza and the authors constantly cited against his work is incisive; so much so, that there seems to be some inconsistency among those maintaining the "Greek position" as to who is indeed their authoritative source!

It is a shame how a work of scholarship, cited by numerous scholars as a "must read" in their bibliographic notes, has lent itself to a continuing controversy, which exists in little form outside cyberspace and political spheres of interest. The author explicitly stated that it was not his intention to discuss it, and at any rate maintained an objective outlook: devoting only a few pages to the problem, yet uncompromising to opinions which he sees as evidentially fragile.

This is indeed a must read if you are interested in Macedonian history, but if your concerns lie elsewhere, this is not the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good supplement to the manual.......2003-10-27

This book includes boilerplate language on general photographic techniques found in other books in the series by the same author. What is extremely helpful, however, is explaining some of specifics on the operation of the E-10. I never would have figured out how to use the white balance settings based on the manual that comes with the camera--it is woefully incomplete. That section probably justifies the purchase of this guide.

3 out of 5 stars A Better Manual Than The Manual With The Camera.......2003-02-18

Essentially, this is a well written manual that helped clarify some of the operation of my Olympus E10 digital camera. It's sad you have to go to a book to get the information a product manual should provide. This is a manual for the camera. Do not buy thinking it gives you more information to do different camera techniques.

This is a wonderful, easy to read book, and I'm suprised that I only chanced upon it by accident. I wouldn't really class it as a full-on "self improvement book". Its more of a fun read with a wide variety of short Greek stories, each with a brief explanation of the lessons and deeper meaning that can be drawn from them. Great for picking up and reading several pages at a time.
