Book Description

In Serpent, Clive Cussler introduced a hero for the new millennium in Kurt Austin, the leader of NUMA's Special Assignments Team. In previous encounters, Austin and his colleague Joe Zavala have battled eco-extortionists and mad empire builders-but they have never faced a menace like the one before them now.

In the heart of the old Soviet Union, a mining tycoon has proclaimed himself czar of Russia. Claiming Romanov ancestry and backed by billions of dollars, he is determined to overthrow the already shaky Russian government-and U.S. opposition doesn't bother him one bit. A little crisis of their own should distract the Americans for a while, and he knows just the thing. . . .

Filled with all the hair-raising action and endless imagination that are Cussler's hallmarks, Fire Ice is a dazzling thriller from the grandmaster of adventure fiction.

Mikhail Razov is a Russian billionaire who claims descent from the Grand Duchess Maria, daughter of the last Russian czar. Razov now seeks to reclaim the Russian throne. His strategy includes the use of underwater earthquakes, tsunamis and a massive release of methane to trigger large-scale global warming. The latter will destroy much of the United States and make Siberia the breadbasket of the world. Razov also wants to locate the original crown of Ivan The Terrible which was reported to be on board the Odessa Star when it sank in the Black Sea in 1918. The Grand Duchess Maria survived the sinking of the Odessa Star.

Pitted against Razov are Kurt Austin of the National Underwater & Marine Agency and his old KGB rival Viktor Petrov. Petrov is still working for the Russian government.

FIRE ICE reminds me in some ways of a Tom Clancy story. It is loaded with technological descriptions and explanations. This will be a big plus for many readers. My main criticism is that the book's characters lack depth. In addition, the plot is based on bizarre and incredible possibilities reminiscent of a James Bond novel. In spite of these shortcomings I consider FIRE ICE to be fairly good escapist reading - particularly if the reader has an interest in high tech gadgets.

1 out of 5 stars This is Cussler?.......2003-08-04

Are we sure Fire Ice was written by Cussler? I've been fascinated by his imagination since I read Raise the Titanic years ago, and I've read a number of his books since. First, it is too much a reworking of other novels and too little an adventure based on historical possibilities. Second, it appears to be written with Hollywood, not readers, in mind; one can almost read the script's instructions between the lines and the director's voice in the background. Too bad. It really was an idea with possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-07-12

This is a great book. It is innovative and captivating. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. That is what makes Cussler a great author he throws surprises at you to make you keep guessing and interested. I would recommend this book to anyone because it suits everyones needs in a story.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Ice a compelling read........2003-01-24

Fire Ice the third in a developing series of fiction from the NUMA files is without question the best yet.

As with the others there is a historic link to the plot that takes the reader a little while to connect the current plotline to. But that in my opinion is the best part of this well paced, thought provoking novel.

An excellent vacation read.

1 out of 5 stars Might have a great plot, If Clive ever arrives at it........2002-11-25

I feel that that great author , Clive Cussler has lost his way. I am now up to page 100 and am still looking for a plot. Along the way I have found this book plagued with excess adjectives, adverbs and side issues. I will continue doggedly to find a plot, but I am getting very weary of Kaela and Ivan who really don't contribute much. I suggest if you want to add to your Clive Cussler collection that you buy this used and try it out. I still recommend C.C. , but he is on probation!

5 out of 5 stars Dus Vedanya Tovarishch .......2007-10-01

The Rosenberg File (2nd edition) by Ronald Radosh and Joyce Milton is a gargantuan piece of superb literary research. The authors take the reader into the dark world of Soviet espionage within the latter part of the decade preceding the war, during the war, and shorlty thereafter.

The ideological sympathies portrayed by many Americans towards Soviet Russia during this time period is no secret, but many took their ideals and sympathies too far! The Rosenbergs, and their accomplices were prime examples of those individuals.

The book reads like an ongoing novel, but...this novel is true. The authors do a magnificent job in laying out each "player" in this "Great Amercian Tragedy." The reader is allowed a glimpse into the formative years of each personality which ultimately enhances the events and story line as it starts to unravel. The crumbling "house of cards" follows the arrest and incarceration of Dr. Klaus Fuchs (who should have been extradited from England and stood trial along with the Rosenbergs!)

The authors present enough recent information (i.e.; FBI files, Venona Intercepts, KGB archives, and publications) to confirm (without a doubt), that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were guilty as charged.

The court room testimony, and drama revealed in the book is as unique, and moving as anything one could ever find within the Nuremberg trials.

The only criticism I would mention is that a book of this size (616 pages including notes and index section) should have had numerous photo plates. In addition, a little more information (if there is any) on Ruth Greenglass would have been appreciated. After all, a woman with the code name of "OSA" (Wasp) deserves a little more study and explanation. Did her Soviet handlers know her better than her husband?

The Rosenberg File (second edition) is actually a "6-Star" book with a 5 star rating.

4 out of 5 stars SOLDIERS OF THE REVOLUTION.......2007-03-05

Eisenhower, Stalin, the Cold War, the Korean War, atomic bombs, atomic spies, air raid shelters, the "Red Scare", McCarthyism and the Rosenbergs- in the mist of time these were early, if undigested terms, from my childhood. Ah, the Rosenbergs. That is what I want to write about today. Out of all of those undigested terms that name is the one that still evokes deep emotion in these old bones. For those who have forgotten or those too young to remember the controversy surrounding their convictions for espionage in passing information about the atomic bomb to the now defunct Soviet Union and their executions defined an essential part of the 1950's, the formation of the Cold War period in American history. Their controversial convictions and sentencing evoked widespread protests throughout the world. Thus, those who seek to learn the lessons of history, and about justice American-style should take the time to carefully examine the case and come to some conclusions about it.

Frankly, I have not, until recently when I read the updated The Rosenberg File by Ronald Radosh and Joyce Milton (written originally in 1983), read any new books on the case so that one of my tasks was to re-read the old material, read the new post-Soviet material, and make some suggestions about what to look for in trying to understand its history. This book, for friend or foe of the memory of the Rosenbergs, is a good place to start.

And what is the scholarship on the case? Was their trial a frame-up in classic American-style against leftist political opponents of the Cold War and American foreign policy? Were they, individually or collectively, "master spies" at the service of the Soviet Union? Were they innocent, if misguided, progressives caught up in the turmoil of the American "red scare" of the post-World War II period? Did the government through its FBI and other security agencies, its attorneys, its judges stumble into a case which would make many reputations? Did the American Communist Party, itself under severe scrutiny, betray the Rosenbergs? Did the various international campaigns on behalf of the couple work at cross purposes with their various demands for a new trial, reduction of sentence and clemency? What kind of people were these Rosenbergs? In short, were the Rosenbergs heroic Soviet spies, martyrs, dupes or innocents? Those are the questions thoughtful readers are confronted with and are fully examined in this book.

Let me add that very few people are neutral on the question of the Rosenbergs, and give the nature of the case no one should be. The authors here are convinced of their guilt in the legal sense and that seems to be good enough for them, although they have some issues about the propriety of the executions. My take on the meaning of the case is different which reflects a different political perspective from the authors. As the title of this piece indicates they stood up for the cause they believed in, the defense of the Soviet Union, and they did not flinch when the consequences of their actions required they pay the highest price. Whether you agree or not, if the reader is merely interested in the spy thriller "who dunnit" aspect of the case and getting the 'bad guys' rather than a thorough review of the case and its political ramifications perhaps one should look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Real History.......2005-07-03

When Ronald Radosh and Joyce Milton began the research for this book, many people across the political spectrum became uncomfortable. That is because this is an actual work of history, rather than an ideological screed masquerading as history. Radosh and Milton have been faithful to the historian's profession: they have interviewed, they have researched, and they have made an honest, ethical attempt to answer the crucial historical question: "What really happened?"

Ideologues on the left and the right have feared and criticized this book because it does a thorough job of lifting the fog of ideology and shedding light on events. What really happened to the Rosenbergs? The revelations are shocking, debunking years of mythology that, even now, continues to be taught in public schools by overindoctrinated teachers. Julius was, indeed, a spy for the USSR, and his wife was fully supportive of his activities, a minor accomplice. They did indeed pass on crude atomic information to the USSR. The USSR would have built an atomic bomb by 1950 at the latest even without the Rosenberg's information. A New York judge used the Rosenbergs to further his career and imposed an unrealistically harsh sentence. President Eisenhower approved of the Rosenberg execution as a warning to anyone else who would spy on the USA. Most of the Rosenberg's most vocal defenders were well aware of their guilt, even as they proclaimed their innocence. Finally, the Rosenbergs could have saved themselves, but chose to put their politics above their children.

These revelations will continually be tested and challenged. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that they will be overturned any time soon. Radosh and Milton have amassed an awesome array of primary and secondary source evidence supporting their conclusions, including interviews of surviving witnesses, court documents, and a review of the scientific evidence -- with only passing reference to the formidable Venona decrypts, which fully corroborate their conclusions.

This book is highly recommended for an understanding of the Cold War era.

4 out of 5 stars Stop apologizing, start reading.......2003-06-21

The Rosenberg case has faded with time and turned into a diffuse urban legend. Facts are rarely possessed by those who are most vehement about the case. This book puts an end to the hodge-podge of information that led some people to believe the Rosenbergs were innocents framed by the government. The truth is that they were spies, they were communists, and they engaged in treason. The Soviets would have acquired The Bomb with or without the Rosenbergs. That doesn't mitigate their guilt for hastening the information to our enemy. The Rosenbergs weren't tried for what they believed. They were tried for what they did. And they were killed for what they did not do--which was recant. Sworn communists, they chose death instead of life. A selfish, stupid choice that placed a worthless ideology over the needs of their two young children, who have written worthwhile books about growing up as orphans of two of the most infamous American traitors. This book ends the speculation that they were innocent, that they had no chance to save their lives by recanting. Here are the latest facts and the fullest account of a chapter in American history that continues to be a vital flashpoint for people on either side of the political spectrum.

5 out of 5 stars Read both this book and The Brother by Sam Roberts.......2002-03-03

The Radosh book concerning the Rosenberg case is a much fuller and more comprehensive treatment of the case than is the more recent book, The Brother, by Sam Roberts. The Brother is based on the current recollections of Ethel Rosenberg's brother David Greenglass who fingered both Ethel and Julius in testimony. David also served a number of years for espionage, himself, as part of same case.

The review by a recent reviewer which states that The Rosenberg File clears Juius and Ethel apparently has not read this book which makes it very, very clear that Julius was certainly part of a communist espionage ring in the NY City area for years during WWII. The Venona Files also make the same case. It is Ethel who was probably not actually guilty of active espionage activities. It should be said, also, that both Rosenbergs could have saved themselves by telling the truth. Ethel might well not even have been charged, and Julius would almost certainly not have gotten the chair. But, they chose to lie right up to the end and be martyrs for the communist cause. The Radosh book, strongly documents the case against Julius and is also forthright about the weakness of the case against Ethel.

Read both The Rosenberg File for completeness and The Brother by Sam Roberts for a facinating sidelight from the point of view of one of the central characters in the story.

As World War II reached its climax, the U.S. push to create an atomic bomb spawned an industry the size of General Motors almost overnight. But a little-understood human dilemma quickly arose: How was all the radiation involved in building and testing the bomb going to affect the countless researchers, soldiers, and civilians exposed to it? Government scientists scrambled to find out, fearing cancer outbreaks and worse, but in their urgency conducted classified experiments that bordered on the horrific: MIT researchers fed radioactive oatmeal to residents of a state boys' school outside Boston; prisoners in Washington and Oregon were subjected to crippling blasts of direct radiation; and patients with terminal illnesses (or so it was hoped) were secretly injected with large doses of plutonium--survivors were surreptitiously monitored for years afterward.

It was these plutonium guinea pigs that set journalist Eileen Welsome on her decade-long search to expose this grisly chapter of America's atomic age, a feat that would earn her the Pulitzer Prize. In the impressively thorough and compelling Plutonium Files, Welsome recounts her work with a reporter's gift for description, characterizing early radiation researchers as "a curious blend of spook, scientist, and soldier," tirelessly interviewing survivors and their families, and providing social and political context for a complex and far-reaching scandal. Perhaps most damning is that not only did these cold-war experiments violate everything from the Hippocratic Oath to the Nuremberg Code, Welsome reveals, they were often ill-conceived, inconclusive, and repetitive--"they were not just immoral science, they were bad science." --Paul Hughes

Book Description

In a Massachusetts school, seventy-three disabled children were spoon fed radioactive isotopes along with their morning oatmeal....In an upstate New York hospital, an eighteen-year-old woman, believing she was being treated for a pituitary disorder, was injected with plutonium by Manhattan Project doctors....At a Tennessee prenatal clinic, 829 pregnant women were served "vitamin cocktails"--in truth, drinks containing radioactive iron--as part of their prenatal treatmen....

In 1945, the seismic power of atomic energy was already well known to researchers, but the effects of radiation on human beings were not. Fearful that plutonium would cause a cancer epidemic among workers, Manhattan Project doctors embarked on a human experiment that was as chilling as it was closely guarded: the systematic injection of unsuspecting Americans with radioactive plutonium. In this shocking exposé, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Eileen Welsome reveals the unspeakable scientific trials that reduced thousands of American men, women, and even children to nameless specimens with silvery radioactive metal circulating in their veins. Spanning the 1930s to the 1990s, filled with hundreds of newly declassified documents and firsthand interviews, The Plutonium Files traces the behind-the-scenes story of an extraordinary fifty-year cover-up. It illuminates a shadowy chapter in this country's history and gives eloquent voice to the men and women who paid for our atomic energy discoveries with their health--and sometimes their lives.

5 out of 5 stars We need more of this!.......2004-11-18

A friend maintains that "very few conspiracies don't get found out".. this is definitely true in this case, but how many other experiments have been done on children, perhaps wards of the state in numerous states using private agencies subcontracting with state child care agencies that we might never hear about?

Of particular interest is the Fernald school chapter, where MIT researchers befriended vulnerable kids and traded "friendship" and "caring" for doses of irradiated milk the kids were made to drink without their knowledge or consent in Massachusetts.

5 out of 5 stars Skeletons in the closet.......2000-12-08

This book is scary to say the least. It is well researched and details what is a practice probably still going on today in experiements we do not know about. I was particularly troubled by the Fernald school, where unwanted kids were befriended by MIT researchers who took them on trips and gave them presents in return for the kids drinking radioactive milkshakes. Was some of this done to generate data for use in bringing the first commercial microwave to market by Raytheon?

I was a guinea pig of sorts growing up in state child care and years later was confronted in an interview with what i suspect was a NSA employee as to whether i knew what " a controlled experiment is". As a young child, a former Pentagon official befriended me and tracked me,keeping files for research purposes over a 20+ year period.

Whitey Bulger is alleged to have been a participant in the MK Ultra experiments involving LSD.

I strongly recommend this and Jonathan Harr's "A Civil Action" to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Plutonium Files (not x-files).......2000-11-23

The release of Eileen Welsome's book "THE PLUTONIUM FILES- America's Secret Medical Experiments in the Cold War" in paperback will hopefully make this important book more accessible to the general public.

Detailing the effort of the US government to test the effects of Plutonium and other radioactive substances on people, the book outlines first the creation and evolution of the nuclear program that created the need for such testing, and then the US government's attempt to conduct such testing on its own citizens without their knowledge or informed consent. On strictly a superficial level there is much here which will attract the "x-files" crowd: Super-secret installations, eccentric scientists and far-fetched experiments on unsuspecting citizens. The kind of information that makes conspiracy theorists sit back from their computers in darkened little rooms, pump their fist in the air and utter that now-hackneyed phrase: "The truth is out there"

Fortunately for the reader, Welsome assiduously avoids such sensationalism and instead draws a largely compassionate picture of the US government's program and of the people who perpetrated it and who participated in it. Welsome's well structured and organized account of the growth of the plutonium testing programs involving critically ill persons across America during the Cold War years teems with information and insight, yet it manages to treat victim and perpetrator alike with a measure of respect and empathy that places this book well above the level of the standard "Shocking Expose". To her great credit Welsome goes beyond merely packaging the results of her extensive research and alarming discoveries in a "tell-all" book.

Certainly, THE PLUTONIUM FILES introduces information which, by its nature is bound to shock and disturb many, but the book also addresses the too-often forgotten issue of context: Was what happened acceptable by the standards of the time in which it occurred? In addressing this question Welsome probes more deeply into her subject, examining the duality, the moral dichotomy, inherent in the decision to implement this program. In a time when the world was still dealing with the results of a devastating world war and the possibility of another seemed likely the need for answers had an immediacy which could be ignored only at the world's peril. Hard decisions had to be made and extraordinary measures taken; Welsome is clearly cognizant of this as she assess each program and as she examines and balances the need against the action and its end result, the author treats the reader to some of her best analysis.

The Plutonium Files- America's Secret Medical Experiments in the Cold War is certainly an important book; one which adds a significant chapter to the recorded history of the growth of atomic science. Despite its scientific topic and exhaustive sourcing the books narrative is direct and engaging, its organization straightforward and its conclusions informed and objective. A book that is well worth its price, Welsome's book would be a great Christmas present for everyone from an avid historian to the omni-present x-files fan; who will find much in here to confirm their most exotic fears. Overall an excellent book for which the author has received two much deserved awards.

5 out of 5 stars Just Amazing.......2000-11-22

This book was completely amazing.

First, you want to be appalled {as well you should} with the amount and type of experiments that were carried out {radioactive cocktails for pregnant women!!}. How could anyone do this to another person??

Then, you think of the people in your own life who have gotten bone marrow transplants, or radiation treatment for cancer. It gets harder to hold the original doctors as evil monsters. Don't misunderstand me - informed consent is a must. How do you inform them of outcomes that are absolutely unknown - how do you start to know?

I thought a lot about this book as I read it, and continue to think about it now that I'm done. I'm sure there must be a middle ground between what they did, and what needed to be done. It is riveting and amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one.......2000-09-01

This book has been haunting me since I finished it almost a year ago. How could we justify human experimentation? In the name of national security in the time of war? In the name of national pride in the age of nuclear arm race? Or, simply for the sake of personal career advancement? The answer is: WE CANNOT. What strikes me is that some of the scientists in question were building their career and reputation by conducting these secret experimentation. They were enjoying their fame and success while their victims and many generations after (if the victims still managed to have children) continued to suffer. What disgusts me the most is that even in the final moment of their life some of these scientists still denied any wrong-doing. When I read to that part, my heart ached and I could not hold back my tears, for I was a scientist too. Now a year later, I am still haunted by those stories. But more so I have come to realize a new question: If those experiments were done on other animals instead of human, would the book still raised the same controversy and interest?

Book Description

"The Cuban files [on the Kennedy assassination] add new pieces to the puzzle and give us a clearer picture of what really happened."-Oliver Stone, director of JFK

This is the first publication of the declassified Cuban report into the Kennedy assassination, instigated at the request of the US government. Fabian Escalante directed Cuba's investigation and describes how Cuban units infiltrating anti-Castro groups in Miami inadvertently uncovered a conspiracy against President Kennedy among those who had felt betrayed by the Bay of Pigs debacle-the Cuban exiles, the Mafia and the CIA.

Fabian Escalante is a former head of Cuban counterintelligence.

Published as part of the series The Secret War.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh perspective.......2007-05-10

Well-written, thoughtfully composed. If there's anyone left in the world who doubts a conspiracy (professional disinformation puppets like Gerald Posner discounted, or those who've been in a coma since before Nov. 22nd, 1963) this is one more solid nail in that coffin. The preponderance of evidence unearthed in the last 40+ years simply demolishes any specter of a disaffected lone nut. This book is written from the Cuban (non-exile) perspective with no real axe to grind (no one now seriously believes Castro was behind the plot) and Escalante has done a large amount of homework. His findings parallel those of most of the serious historians and researchers, and short of who fired the fatal shot from the knoll, is complete and satisfying. I found his timeline catalogue of actions against Cuba interesting, especially when he weaves in the "patsying" of Oswald. This book belongs on the shelf of those afore-mentioned historians and researchers. And it's not full of typos and grammatical weirdness.

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever on the case...for the informed reader.......2006-11-20

It has been said once that the truth about JFK's assassination would never be known "in our lifetime".
This short volume contradicts this statement and proves that it is still possible, provided there is a will to do so, to bring the case to justice.

For a number of years now, most serious scholars and searchers (meaning those who have no specific agenda to market, and who try to analyze the evidence without bias)of the JFK case have come to the conclusion that the murder of Kennedy was some sort of side-effect of the secret war against Castro, what would be called today a "blowback" in Intelligence parlance.
Since that war involved elements of the CIA, Military Intelligence, FBI, Mafia, Cuban exiles and their supporters (mainly business or pro-business figures), names of individuals and organizations pertaining to this loose alliance of interests have repeatedly and regularky cropped up either during the various official investigations or the work of researchers.

Unfortunately, even though some HSCA investigators started unraveling some crucial information, the official inquiry in fact buried the case (see HSCA investigator Gaetan Fonzi's book). So no real, "hard" investigation of what was still only a very compelling hypothesis (was JFK killed by people in relation with/pertaining to the secret Intelligence and Military apparatus at war with Cuba?)ever took place.
It befell to independant researchers to pour over the evidence over the years and painstakingly verify and refine the information, zeroing on the hypothesis described very sketchily above: a general overview of the conspiracy, but with some crucial elements missing to complete the puzzle.

So, just when you thought that we would have to be content with what we've got, comes this little book, which gives names, dates and places and allow the serious searcher to reevaluate previously gathered information.
What we have here is, in fact, the hard inquiry into the Anti Castro Cuban Exiles that we were hoping for, but never happened.
Well, it came to pass that some people did have a reason to be very interested in the activities of Anti Cuban Exiles at the time and did have the means and motives to obtain detailled information about what they were up to at the time of JFK's assassination: Cuban Intelligence.

Former head of Intelligence Fabian Escalante relates how, in the course of their eforts to thwarts assassination plots against Castro and prevent sabotage, they came across fragmentary information that allowed them to reconstruct the assassination in Dallas and identify some of the principals in the crime.

One of the greatest asset of the book is that people that are only alluded at in previous books are identified by name, and dates and details of specific events are clarified.Basically, who said what to whom, when and where.

Imagine having several informants deep within the most violent exile groups of the sixties, crossing paths with such notorious figues as David Phillips, Franck Sturgis, Carlos Bringuier, Guy Bannister, and the like.

Imagine analyzing all the information coming back, and starting to find, along the years, an intriguing track of evidence leading back to the events in Dallas.

Imagine capturing a senior Anti Castro exile, seriously wounded, who would start talking, after years of treatment in a Cuban hospital, of what he knew about JFK's death.

In fact, don't imagine it, because that is Escalante's story.
The book is full of details that should be taken upon and pursued by serious researchers. For instance, Escalante ponders, with good reason, about an obituary published in Dallas sometime after the assassination, and announcing the death of a group of "Exile patriots" killed in action in Cuba. Escalante states that some of the names given in the obituary do not correspond with the identity of the three men actually killed that day.

He also wonders why, of all places, this obittuary would be published in Dallas, and not Miami, the homeplace of the Anti Castro community.

The names of the "would be dead" men are given by Escalante (so go buy the book...).
It is my guess that serious inquiry of these persons would show that they were direct participants in the crime, at the action level (probably a shooter team)

Another crucial information, in my view, is that according to Cuban Intelligence, David Morales handled David Phillips, and not the other way around.

Oh, by the way, the book blows of the water the theory propounded by "ultimate sacrifice" (the only JFK book I could not finish, and I have read some real turkeys on that subject believe me..), of a coup d'état led by Che Guevara and supported by Kennedy that somehow led JFK to take unnecessary risks that day in Dallas (yes, I know, makes no sense to me either..). There is not a single mention or allusion to that supposed plot in the Cuban files.

When you know the efficiency of Cuban Intelligence, as demonstrated by Castro's endurance (see also the HSCA records for details of plots foiled by Cuban agents), if there was such a plot, it would have been penetrated and unmasked.

So five stars, and a must read for serious researchers.

On the other hand, if you are new or not very well versed in the assassination specifics or general issues of debate, I would recommand you start somewhere else.

You need a good background information to really appreciate and make sense of what is presented here

As you see, there are tons of information to be gained here, in a mere 300 pages.

TO START OFF I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO BELIEVE THIS "CRACK POT BABBLE" IT TOOK ME NEAR 3YRS., A FRIEND, AND A NOTICE OF WHAT HAPPEN IN THE MEDIA AND WHO RUNS IT. SO ALOT OF THIS DOES CHALLANGE WHAT YOU WERE TAUGHT BUT IT ALSO QUESTIONS MYSTERIES THAT ARE ALREADY OUT THERE. SO KEEP AND OPEN MIND AND SEARCH FOR THE TRUTH. EITHER TO THIS BOOK THAT IS MAYBE WRITTEN BY A CRACK POT THEN THERE IT IS CASE SOLVED OR IS WHAT HE IS SAYING TRUE? IF IT IS TRUE ALL OF IT THEN WE SHOULD KNOW THE TRUTH.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS MY BIBLE.......2002-10-13

Besides "Battlefield Earth" no other book has had such a profound impact on my life. I think it is important to reveal the truth behind the government lies about the Nazi's and UFO's. However, this book leaves out important tidbits of valuable information about the hidden Government messages designed to brainwash us in everyday newspapers and movies. Also, this book completely overlooks the battels in Outer Space between Africa and China as well as the battles for control of the undersea weapons bases during the Spanish American war. However, everything in this book is completely true, just sort of hard to belive at first, just like the delightful newspaper: Weekly World News (quite possibly the only truthful newspaper left). You must forget your old way of thinking and begin to believe the truth and pass it on, otherwise we all might become victems of these horryfying conspircies. Thank you Branton, you will almost certainly go down in history as one of the greatest people who ever lived!

1 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Joke.......2002-09-01

Whoever this "Commander X" is, he's obviously a comedian. This book is a joke. The author's argument wanders all over the place and is not coherent. The quality and resolution of pictures and documents in this book are incredibly poor. The pictures are out of focus and/or grainy, and could easily be fakes or pictures of something else besides what they are claimed to be. Anyone who believes this book will believe anything. I am NOT a UFO skeptic, I do believe they exist, but this particular book is a sham. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars How wild does it get?.......2002-02-19

It gets VERY wild. Books like this are hard to review actually. From what angle should you come from? I mean, here is a book that talks about reptilian aliens living in underground bases in Antarctica and colloborating with Nazi criminals and the US govt to take over the world. And careful: this is NOT a sci-fi novel.Nope, the author professes to be reporting to us the "truth". And what i am describing above isnt even half as wild as this book is.
I guess that with the aid of some wonderful herbs this can be a great read (you could wind up having a bad trip of course)...
Then again if you are a seasoned paranoiac this is just the right stuff for you.

4 out of 5 stars AN INTRIGUING -- AND OFTEN BIZARRE -- POINT OF VIEW.......2001-01-23

THIS BOOK TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT. I mean here is a photograph toward the back of the book which shows a man standing on the outer rim of a craft that very much looks like a flying saucer. There is another picture of a similar vehicle with what looks to be some sort of weapon suspended from the hull of the ship. Advanced weapon at that. Unlike other UFO pictures this look amazing real so I dont know what to make of the author's claim that some of the UFOs we see were actually either constructed by the Nazi toward the end of WWII, or have been manufactured in places like Area 5l supposedly based upon the Nazi UFO designs. A zillion books have been written on UFOs being interplanetary in origin . . . that is the most popular belief among so called serious UFOlogists. But there are other schools of thought -- and the author, Branton -- has done a deservingly good job of collecting data which possibly shows that at least some UFOs are"man" made. More than half a century after the close of the war we may still be fighting the evil Hitler!

5 out of 5 stars James Bond and Bruce Roberts: Better Together!.......2007-04-21

Ian Fleming was an agent for British Intelligence; Bruce Roberts wrote "diaries" exposing the secret history of the 20th Century. Kidnapping, murder, espionage, money, power--who needs fiction when the truth is so startling?

5 out of 5 stars Gemstone File History.......2006-09-17

As the author of "A Skeleton Key to the Gemstone File" in 1975, on which all of the books and references to the Gemstone File have been based, I have watched with amazement how my brief summary of Bruce Porter Roberts' work has been circulated worldwide and written about by others. Six books that I know about have appeared so far. But the first book to be published which will contain a significant amount of the original Gemstone File papers will be my own: The Gemstone File: A Memoir." "Inside the Gemstone File" contains some excellent information about the relationship between Bruce Roberts' writing and Ian Fleming's James Bond novels and movies. It, together with Gerald Carroll's book, "Project Seek," provide valuable supplemental information and background regarding the Gemstone File.

2 out of 5 stars Find the original documents!.......1999-09-07

The only way to know if the 350-1000 handwritten pages of Bruce Porter Roberts, given the name of the Gemstone File could be used to arrest and convict the killers of John F. Kennedy is to find them, read them, and determine where the information came from and how reliable it is.

Until the original documents are released, there is no way to know where the information came from or how reliable it is.

This is the fourth book on the subject so far, and the obvious behavior to engage in is not being followed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Connections, Thoughtful, and Amazing!.......1999-08-04

If you want to read an enjoyable, indepth look at the possible truths behind the James Bond books and films, pick up this brand new book. Chapter Seven is a classic, truly a good, fun read thatgives indepth data on what Ian Fleming had in mind regarding Bond and his villians. There's convincing evidence that the supervillian Blofeld probably was based on the reallife Aristotle Onassis. The linkages are intriguing too, such as the mysterious Area 51-type location, the Hughes-clone, the Onassis-clone, the oil industry thatare evident in the 1972 Bond film based on Fleming's *Diamonds are Forever*.I'll stop there, other than to mention that right before Ian Flemingmysteriously died, he had apparently made arrangements to fly up to NewJersey to talk to his old British intelligence service buddy, Ivan T.Sanderson, according to this book. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's more history in this one book than in ten history textbooks you'll find in your local school! Highly recommended.

Book Description

When FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover reported to the Nixon White House in 1972 about the Bureau's surveillance of John Lennon, he began by explaining that Lennon was a "former member of the Beatles singing group." When a copy of this letter arrived in response to Jon Wiener's 1981 Freedom of Information request, the entire text was withheld--along with almost 200 other pages--on the grounds that releasing it would endanger national security. This book tells the story of the author's remarkable fourteen-year court battle to win release of the Lennon files under the Freedom of Information Act in a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court. With the publication of Gimme Some Truth, 100 key pages of the Lennon FBI file are available--complete and unexpurgated, fully annotated and presented in a "before and after" format.
Lennon's file was compiled in 1972, when the war in Vietnam was at its peak, when Nixon was facing reelection, and when the "clever Beatle" was living in New York and joining up with the New Left and the anti-war movement. The Nixon administration's efforts to "neutralize" Lennon are the subject of Lennon's file. The documents are reproduced in facsimile so that readers can see all the classification stamps, marginal notes, blacked out passages and--in some cases--the initials of J. Edgar Hoover. The file includes lengthy reports by confidential informants detailing the daily lives of anti-war activists, memos to the White House, transcripts of TV shows on which Lennon appeared, and a proposal that Lennon be arrested by local police on drug charges.
Fascinating, engrossing, at points hilarious and absurd, Gimme Some Truth documents an era when rock music seemed to have real political force and when youth culture challenged the status quo in Washington. It also delineates the ways the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations fought to preserve government secrecy, and highlights the legal strategies adopted by those who have challenged it.

Did the government have something to do with the assassination of John Lennon? Click yes if you think so or no if you don't.

5 out of 5 stars The Woodstock Nation revisited.......2003-10-18

It did bring me back "...to those thrilling day's of yesteryear." I was 18 and in the Army in 1972. I have forgoten most of the events unfolding that year, and this book brought back those scene's, as well as the THEN famous people who are just "faded memories" now. John and Yoko, Abby and Jerry, The other Chicago seven members, all of them are here and live again in these declassified FBI files. You would think some of the printed report's on the coming's and going's of the counter-culture leaders were written by old busy-bodies. Most documents are just plain nonsense and gossip. Why the Government tried to supress these for so long is a wonder. I would like to know what the British sent over to the FBI in the way of documents. These are shown to the reader as still being blacked out, and some dated beyond the date the FBI stopped watching Lennon's movements. A well done book by the Prof. and well worth the time if you like to read book's of a more political theme. Not for the four mop top's type of Beatle's fan. If you lived through the Day's of rage and wish to take a walk down those paranoid paths of the Hippie era then buy this book (I did not say "Steal This Book.")

2 out of 5 stars Better than Elvis's sleeping pills.......2001-07-28

Well I just woke up from a long nap after trying yet again to *yawn* read a chapter of this *yawn* book. Definitely not nearly enough bananas or geese in it for me. If you want to hear long drawn-out stories about getting files from government agencies....well all I'm saying is I guess my primary interest in Lennon has always been his music and I just don't give a hoot about this stuff-- not enough entertainment value. I thought the book "The day Elvis Met Nixon" was much better. Oh go ahead write me a negative response.

4 out of 5 stars A Legal Mystery Tour.......2000-06-04

First a simple test. To whom was FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover referring when he wrote to President Nixon's Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman, "[He is]...a paradox because he is difficult to judge by the normal standards of civilized life....His main reason for being is to destroy, blindly and indiscriminately, to tear down and provoke chaos...."? Adolf Hitler maybe, or some seminal Osama bin-Laden? Of course not, as you already know it was none other than our friendly, pudgy-faced, mop-headed, evil genius, that heinous John Lennon, composer of such bellicose anthems as "Imagine" and "Give Peace a Chance." Reason enough to warrant the FBI's surveillance of the man for 24 hours a day, for years on end? Well, not really, but they did it anyway. This book details the efforts by the author, Jon Wiener, and two ACLU attorneys, Mark Rosenbaum and Dan Marmalefsky, to obtain the 200 odd pages of documents held by the FBI on Mr. Lennon, that the agency had refused to release, (typically on grounds of either national security or ostensibly to protect confidential sources). To this end the attorneys employed the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) as their basis to obtain these documents. The run-around that they were given by the government should be nothing new to students of previous such encounters, and the fact that it took 15 years to achieve it should not prove too surprising either. But without doubt the central point of this book, and one that cannot be overemphasized, is that it was the FBI (acting outside of its own charter and the explicit instructions contained in the FOIA) that violated the law, while finding no criminal activity on the part of Mr. Lennon. Possibly I'm too old, too jaded or just plain too cynical to be surprised to find out that the government, or its representatives, are capable of lying, placing illegal wire-taps, harassment, obfuscation and underhandedness. Certainly all of that happened here, and it is hats off to Rosenbaum and Marmalefsky for uncovering much of the skullduggery. Although most of the information on Mr. Lennon that was unearthed as a result of this effort was largely already known to any diligent reader of, for example, "Rolling Stone" magazine, following the trail of the hearings and legal arguments is a fascinating and worthwhile one, and the book's final chapter was (for me, at least) an eye-opener.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent encyclopedia of scandals!.......2003-02-04

This wonderful book is simply jam-packed with information on scandals both recent and old. I picked up the book to read something about the scandal that ruined Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, and found an excellent synopsis of it. Reading on through the book, I read about many scandals that I had heard about (such as Father Coughlin, the 1982 Congressional Page scandal, and much more), and quite a few that I had not (Supreme Court Justices forced to resign, murders, divorces, sexual scandals, and much, much more).

As might be expected with a book that is organized like an encyclopedia, this book covers many subjects, but none of them to any great depth. But, I do not consider that to be negative. What this book tried to be, it succeeds at being, quite admirably. It covered everything scandal I could think of, and succeeded in giving me a basic understanding in the shortest time possible. Therefore, if you are interested in reading about the many scandals that have flamed up throughout American history, then I highly recommend that you get this book!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate conspiracy book.......2007-04-30

This book is awesome! Very fascinating, entertaining, and educational. It's also written and organized in an exciting and easy to read format with some nice illustrations.
About every conspiracy you've ever heard of is in this book. JFK, Elvis, The Holy Grail, Roswell, Waco, The Bermuda Triangle, 9/11...man, it's fun to read and contemplate.
Every topic has a brief explanation, some strange facts, suspects, most convincing evidence, and then ends with a skeptical take on why the particular theory might be nonsense.
The book never tries to take sides, except on the Elvis story it ends saying "The King is dead. Get over it." How funny!
You don't need to be a conspiracy theory nut to enjoy this book, but you might turn into one after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Bang up to date, bang on the money.......2005-07-19

If you enjoy conspiracy theories, this book is for you. It is one of the most entertaining, razorblade sharp and easy-to-read, general books on the subject that has ever been published. Whilst some of the photographic material is pretty standard, there are some incredible shots in this book that I'd never come across before - even in five years looking into some of my favourite theories on the net.

One of the great things about this is that it covers modern hot topics such as the murder of David Kelly (on that case it includes some amazing new material) and what the second war in Iraq/911 is really about.

Probably the best book to give to someone fairly new to the real stories behind the news, there is something for everyone in this book. If you are a sceptic about conspiracy theories, you will probably enjoy the acid, dark and often sarcastic humour the writers bring to the topics they cover, but if you are a conspiracy nut like me you'll enjoy a lot of the new twists that they have put into print.

One of the author's - David Southwell - is the subject of a lot of gossip in certain conspiracy circles after it emerged in a front-page Sunday Time's story that he worked with MI5 on terrorist issues. Amongst all the crazy stuff on aliens and Elvis, there are traces of a lot of inside knowledge about the world we aren't meant to know about.

My only gripes are that it could have done with some better editing in places and that the authors drop hints o things they were obviously afraid to publish (though they get away with exposing some amazing truths).

All in all, the most fun conspiracy book I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars The type of book Bill Hicks would have written.......2005-06-29

Wow. An easy five-star book. This is the conspiracy book that really stands out from all the rest of the bloated tomes clogging up the shelves. A fantastic, fun format is combined with real savvy write ups on not only the usual conspiracies, but some of the more unknown but lot more interesting ones.

Well written, there is lots of insight into the world - how the government really works, how the media really works and how all the secret agenda shape our lives. A lot of books that make you question authority are really po-faced, but there's some great humor in here and it's no surprise that this book is dedicated to Bill Hicks - it is exactly the type of conspiracy book he might have written.

Great looking with some amazing pictures, this is the book. One of the best I've read on this topic and certainly the funniest but genuinely scary book I've ever come across.

2 out of 5 stars File it in the Only Buy if Cheap Basket.......2004-12-07

This picture book is a nice introduction to conspiracies for anyone who has lived on the moon and never heard any conspiracies before but honestly you'll already know at least most of the ones in here before reading. It is good though how each conspiracy has a paragraph written through the eyes of a sceptic on each conspiracy contained within. Don't get me wrong, you will also learn some interesting facts you may not previously know about some of the conspiracies that may convince you their true. I found that although they have the topics of some major conspiracies they do not have the actual more well known conspiracies about them. For example the 9/11 one in this book does not mention at all the conspiracy that a plane did not actually crash into the Pentagon which is making the rounds on the Internet at the moment. Nor does it mention the Philadelphia plane being shot down by the US air force to prevent it crashing into a Nuclear Powerplant/Capitol Hill which is believed by a substantial number of people.

The other thing I think could have been improved in this book is the font colour and background selection. The Kurt Cobain, Extra-Terrestrials intro pages and others are impossible to read at night or if you are a bit tired with their faint grey text and black backgrounds.
