I bought this set for my 23 year old for her birthday. Two of our other children enticed her into reading Harry Potter. She really wanted the set and so the entire family pitched in to get it for her. She loved it. She was so excited. I have read the Harry Potter series myself except for number seven, which I am going to do soon. The entire series deserves a five star rating. Ordering from Amazon was easy, fast and efficient. The books were shipped promptly and were everything Amazon said they would be. I love ordering from Amazon and will continue to do so in the future.

I ordered the item in your communication except with a CD included. The CD never showed up. You then sent a replacement with exactly the same result. After I called Amazon I was informed that you were out of the advertised item. I was then informed via email, to which no reply was allowed, twice, that I would be charged for the item and its replacement I can see that we will be having a battle royal with the credit card company as there is no way on God's green earth that I will pay anything for such absolutely lousy customer service.

Since I am an international student studying in the United States, my perspective is slightly different from those of other reviewers. If you are studying for standardized tests such as SAT or GRE, this is the ultimate authority you should refer to whenever you feel unsure on the exact meaning of vocabularies you encounter in past administrated tests. If you practice on questions on analogy for awhile, for example, you would discover that the ETS (Educational Testing Services), the maker of GRE and SAT, also relies intensively, although not thoroughly, on Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary definitions to design their questions. Only by referring to the MW can you truly understand why certain answer choice is correct, while others are not.

As a bonus, you also have exclusive rights to send inquires on difficult words to MW resourceful editors, a service I find extremely helpful. Although responses are slow (because of, surprisingly, numerous projects in Merriam-Webster Corporation), you will generally receive the most authoritative answers from the brightest people on the planet. As an ESL learner, I am deeply obsessed with the flexibility, inherent logic, and beauty of English language; all introduced by this enlightening tome.

    5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile purchase.......2007-08-04

I have been using this dictionary for many years. I have gone through a few editions. A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a word that this dictionary did not contain. I decided that it was time for a change. I purchased The New Oxford American Dictionary.

I found out that there are features that this dictionary has that The New Oxford American Dictionary, Second Edition does not contain. First of all, the thumb tabs are quite helpful and time saving. Next, would be the word origins, country and languages when applicable, and year that it actually became a word. Followed by the pronunciation keys and parts of speech. In some cases, they also have word variations.

The only reason that I had bought the Oxford one was because this dictionary has words missing that I feel should be included. If a larger more updated version of this becomes available, I will be happy to purchase it.

Excellent reference book that I use on a daily basis. Spell Check on my computer doesn't always have the answers to my horrific spelling ability. So having this reference book along with the Spell Check on my computer I can actually write an email, letter or report and impress everyone without looking like I have the worst spelling abilities this side of the Mississippi !!! LOL I should have purchased this book along time ago and now that I have I really have no idea what I did without this reference book all this time !!!

    Book Description

What if everything we have been told about the origins of Christianity is a lie?

What if a small group had always known the truth and had kept it hidden . . . until now?

What if there is evidence that Jesus Christ survived the crucifixion?

In Holy Blood, Holy Grail Michael Baigent and his co-authors Henry Lincoln and Richard Leigh stunned the world with a controversial theory that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene married and founded a holy bloodline. The book became an international publishing phenomenon and was one of the sources for Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code. Now, with two additional decades of research behind him, Baigent's The Jesus Papers presents explosive new evidence that challenges everything we know about the life and death of Jesus.

    Download Description

    "

What if everything you think you know about Jesus is wrong? In The Jesus Papers, Michael Baigent reveals the truth about Jesus's life and crucifixion. Despite -- or rather because of -- all the celebration and veneration that have surrounded the figure of Jesus for centuries, Baigent asserts that Jesus and the circumstances leading to his death have been heavily mythologized.

As a religious historian and a leading expert in the field of arcane knowledge, Baigent has unequaled access to hidden archives, secret societies, Masonic records, and the private collections of antiquities traders and their moneyed clients. Using that access to full advantage, Baigent explores the religious and political climate in which Jesus was born and raised, examining not only the conflicts between the Romans and the Jews, but the strife within the different factions of the Jewish Zealot movement. He chronicles the migrations of Jesus's family, his subsequent exposure to other cultures, and the events, teachings, and influences that were most likely to have shaped his early years. Baigent also uncovers the inconsistencies and biases in the accounts of the major historians of Jesus's time, including Josephus, Pliny, and Tacitus. The enduring influence of these accounts in forming our most common conceptions of Jesus reveals that spin is not a new phenomenon.

Taking us back to sites that over the last twenty years he has meticulously explored, studied, and in some instances excavated for the first time, Baigent provides a detailed account of his groundbreaking discoveries, including many never-before-seen photos. The evidence he has uncovered has lead him to make shocking new assertions that threaten the conventional account of Jesus's life and death and shake the very foundation of Western thought, based as it is upon the assumption of Jesus's divinity. Ultimately, his investigation raises the hope that we may gain a new understanding of Jesus.

Another person trying to disprove something they don't want to beleive. Ovewhelming evidence proves that Jesus was crucified. Nothing in this book disproves it, because nothing in this book can stand on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling and fun, yet stretching at times.......2007-08-19

I would first like to state that I really enjoyed reading this book and the very original experiences the Mr. Biagent shares. As a truth seeker, I read every text as objectively as possible simply with the hope of learning, never to reaffirm my own beliefs or scour them in the hopes of criticizing others.

The fact is that Mr. Biagent is correct when he states there is little to no extra biblical evidence of Jesus. Perhaps there would have been more had the Vatican not destroyed any and every piece of evidence that didn't jive with the Gospel accounts. Christians often like to throw out Josephus as their trump card, but even the Christian apologist Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) admits that the infamous passage is at least partially interpolated. 2 centuries after the death of Christ there was no mention of this passage in the comprehensive debates we have on record between Justin Martyr and Origen. Not one mention of Josephus. Why? Probably because it didn't exist and was interpolated at a later time.

The Jesus Papers does seem to stretch in some areas while in others proposing fascinating theories as to the life of Jesus and his possible travels. The idea that he might have survived the crucifiction seems far fetched to me personally, but nonetheless there is confusion on the gospel accounts as to those final moments of his life and time thereafter. In my view, it's this type of confusion that leads the door open for such theories.

In a perfect world, I would read this book again for a more comprehensive review. But to sum up the first go around, it was quite enjoyable and well written. Unfortunatley, many readers are simply too slanted and grounded in their own belief system to consider such thinking.

If you have an open mind, read this book. If nothing else, you will be entertained, and even a get a little history lesson while you're at it. Perhaps you'll find the text more sound, as a whole, then I did.

4 out of 5 stars Depends on if your open minded.......2007-08-17

My thoughts is that Baigent did do tons of research, and this is based on way more than a painting. If you are open to the possibly that Jesus may have been a wonderful "human" that could have been a great politician, this might be a good read for you. For those who can not go there, than this is not for you.
He got off track a couple times, and if he was next to me telling the story I would have smacked him. But when he got back on track I was back on board. It's a OK read, but not the greatest cover up in history.

    1 out of 5 stars Supporting illusions..........2007-08-10

So continues on the scheme to deface and devalue Jesus Christ. I say if you have something to write about, put it on paper and back it up with some facts and sound theory. Everything else, highlighting this shabby attempt to further a mudslinging campaign, is a unthinkable strech of unsupported faith.

5 out of 5 stars Jesus Papers Review.......2007-07-24

This is at the least, an interesting book with ideas, proofs and things to consider and learn.

The mad, shaggy genius of the comics world dips deeply into the well of history and pulls up a cup filled with blood in From Hell. Alan Moore did a couple of Ph.D.'s worth of research into the Whitechapel murders for this copiously annotated collection of the independently published series. The web of facts, opinion, hearsay, and imaginative invention draws the reader in from the first page. Eddie Campbell's scratchy ink drawings evoke a dark and dirty Victorian London and help to humanize characters that have been caricatured into obscurity for decades. Moore, having decided that the evidence best fits the theory of a Masonic conspiracy to cover up a scandal involving Victoria's grandson, goes to work telling the story with relish from the point of view of the victims, the chief inspector, and the killer--the Queen's physician. His characterization is just as vibrant as Campbell's; even the minor characters feel fully real. Looking more deeply than most, the author finds in the "great work" of the Ripper a ritual magic working intended to give birth to the 20th century in all its horrid glory. Maps, characters, and settings are all as accurate as possible, and while the reader might not ultimately agree with Moore and Campbell's thesis, From Hell is still a great work of literature. --Rob Lightner

    Book Description

Legendary comics writer Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell have created a gripping, hallucinatory piece of crime fiction about Jack the Ripper. Detailing the events that led up to the Whitechapel murders and the cover-up that followed, From Hell has become a modern masterpiece of crime noir and historical fiction.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Moore and Campbell have delved deeply into the story of Jack the Ripper, to present a version of what might have happened, based on what they knew and discovered in the research.

While odd looking to start with, the artwork seems to fit the squalor of the times once you start reading, and the density of the work is pretty impressive.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece! What did you expect me to say?.......2007-08-07

Thick as a phone-book and often difficult to navigate. 'From Hell' is a comic that demands a lot from the reader and not is possible to finish over a single visit at the restroom. But it will yet be a highly rewarding experience for whoever who dares to give it a try.

In one of his most ambitious works Alan Moore gives his version of the still unsolved crimes of Jack The Ripper. Stories of the police, the prostitutes, citizens of London and the killer himself are neatly meshed together with a enthusiastic analysis and ideas that appears very realistic though most is fiction. Comics are rarely seen as intelligent or complex as this.

Eddie Campbell's drawings has this raw and unpolished look that suits the story just perfect and he makes a great deal of portraying the locations, the people and the gruesome killings in details. The killings are extreme and not for the weaker but they naturally also plays an important part and should certainly not ever be left out.

Now, just imagine the enormous research both must have done for this book!

    5 out of 5 stars UNBELIVABLE.......2007-06-06

i made the decision to purchase each of the 10 books individually. only needing #'s 8 and 10 i DO NOT regret my decision. the individual 10 books are WAAAAAAY cooler than the one volume with the whole story in it. it means you get 10 covers with 10 different paintings... cant get cooler than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Graphic Novel written by Alan Moore.......2007-05-25

It's in black and white, a foot thick and will give you nightmares for a month.

If I could sum it up in a few sentences I'd be doing it a disservice and be a liar.

Buy it, read it and weep, for there will never be another book like it.

    Watchmen for grown ups.

    5 out of 5 stars Superlative.......2007-03-17

'From Hell' has been in the world of literature for quite some time now. Like several other works by Alan Moore, it had also led to a paradigm shift in the world of Graphic Novels right from the beginning. But this work has a particular shade attached to it that we don't encounter elsewhere. Jack the Ripper has been the subject of so many works that sooner or later he/she may also become the butt of jokes like Knights' Templar (e.g. truest sign of one's insanity being his launching of discussions related to Knights' Templar). However, this book is no joke. It is a grim yet fictitous account of the Whitechapel murders based on Stephen Knight's now infamous "Royal Conspiracy" theory.
The story is briefly about the indiscretions of Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor (Prince Eddy) that leads to her marriage to a shopkeeping lady and causes the birth of a girl. When the matter is attempted to be suppressed by the Queen through Sir William Withey Gull, Annie Crook (mother of Prince Eddy's child) becomes insane, but this secret is learned by Marie Kellie. She forms a loose confederacy of some of the other "Joy Maiden"-s of Whitechapel to blackmail the royalty through the painter William Sickert, which leads to their being butchered by Sir William Withey Gull, as per masonic rituals. These crimes are finally exposed, but masonic cover-ups as well as other efforts to silence Inspector Abberline succeed in suppressing the actual occurrences and distorting the entire picture.
Like all other works of Moore, it is a research paper, aimed at analysing those killings and to come up with meanings that our philosophy can not explain. This book is not for those who might wish either to read it for pleasure or to brush up their knowledge regarding "Ripperology". It is a work that might very well challenge your sanity and compell yourself to look at those faces, leering at you from the shadows, with a little more concern.

We preferred this cover to the NRSV over the Noah's Ark cover, which seems a bit juvenile as children go from middle elementary to upper.
The references, articles, maps, and tidbits are excellent, and the children in our church love their Bibles!

The Second Edition of this fundamental textbook maintains the book's tradition of clear, thought-provoking instruction. Readers are provided once again with an instructive mix of mathematics, physics, statistics, and information theory.

All the essential topics in information theory are covered in detail, including entropy, data compression, channel capacity, rate distortion, network information theory, and hypothesis testing. The authors provide readers with a solid understanding of the underlying theory and applications. Problem sets and a telegraphic summary at the end of each chapter further assist readers. The historical notes that follow each chapter recap the main points.

    The Second Edition features:
    * Chapters reorganized to improve teaching
    * 200 new problems
    * New material on source coding, portfolio theory, and feedback capacity
    * Updated references

Now current and enhanced, the Second Edition of Elements of Information Theory remains the ideal textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in electrical engineering, statistics, and telecommunications.

An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2007-09-21

This is the standard reference on the subject, but I found it very disappointing. The chapters felt disjointed to me. But what is more problematic is the lack of rigor in the writing. For example, terms are used without being precisely defined; assumptions are made without this being made explicit; and descriptions are given without precision. (A good example of the latter is the section on Huffman coding, where the algorithm is "specified" by giving two examples.)

The book may be good as a reference (time will tell...) but I did not find it good for learning the material.

3 out of 5 stars topics are OK. poorly written.......2007-06-01

Believe me, I have read many many textbooks. Not one is like this book. The problem is that the authors don't explain, to an extent where terms are not clearly defined. I have to frequently stop and GUESS what the authors mean by the symbols and terms, and writing something in that particular way. The flow of understanding is constantly stopped by these intensionally introduced hurdles. I say intensional because from the preface of the book I see that the authors are pretty proud of that.

I think I am already quite good at guessing what the authors of other books occasionally skip. But this one really annoys me. I think it is really a waste of time to have to guess something that is just basic definition.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-05-14

Honestly, this is a great book on Information Theory. Though, I must admit, I was petrified when I got it. I didn't buy it directly from Amazon, but from some other vendor, and when I receive it, the front and back page was all in Chinese! It happens to be someone who bought it in China (for a tenth of the price) broght it to America and sold it. The text itself was in English, fortunately. That's why this days I don't buy anything in Amazon that is not directly from Amazon, unless it is strictly necessary!

5 out of 5 stars Updated, reorganized, expanded Second Edition.......2007-03-25

The preface of this book says, 'This is intended to be a simple and accessible book on information theory.' That's true, but it is aimed at the senior year or early graduate level where a theoretical background is needed for computer science, communications engineering, applied mathematics or similar fields. The mathematical nature of the book says that the student should at least have a background through calculus and a couple of upper level courses in statistics/probability. After all, Information Theory is generally considered to be a branch of applied mathematics.

On the whole, the writing style of the book (other than the equasions) is rather light and entertaining. For instance his discussion on the similarities between gambling and data compression brings a rather complex notion down something we can identify - that's before he gets into the math of course.

One complaint about the first edition of the book was that it didn't have enough problems for the student. This has been solved by the addition of a couple of hundred additional problems. There is also a dedicated web site for this book with more material, including solutions to selected problems.

3 out of 5 stars A good survey of Information Theory.......2007-02-08

Elements of Information Theory was the book I used in graduate school. It takes a topical approach to the subject from standard topics like source and channel coding, esoteric concepts like Kolmogorov complexity, to applied topics like how to get rich by applying Information theory to horse racing and the stock market. Overall I thought it was a good book. It is well written and exposes the grandure of subject. However what it provides in bredth it takes away in depth. Several topics, including fundemental ones like entropy, while well illustrated are not at all motivated - they are just given as definitions. In this I feel Galleghers book is superior. Also there is a real dearth of problems, its unusual to do all the problems in a book and feel you have not done enough to understand the material. Many a time I found myself scouring the web for more problems to augment the ones provided. So if you are looking for a broad view of the subject of information theory, this is the book to buy. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of the fundamental topics get Gallegher.

    Book Description

This well loved writer effectively uses his personal mistakes to illustrate riveting truths about repentance and forgiveness. As he focuses on the true authority of God, he is careful to explain by example the important difference between "submission" and "obedience."

The same struggle with divine authority is also represented through the lives of John the Baptist, the Apostle Paul, and other biblical figures. An especially helpful book for Christians who want to develop a serious pursuit of God.

    5 out of 5 stars Faith builder.......2007-07-16

Respect for authority in and out of church is at a all time low. I'm not saying that I agree with everything word for word, but I do understand and live by the thought that if we (as in all people) can not function under authority we'll never be able to function in it! I try not to forget that just like the roman centurion Jesus is under the father's authority and he never disobeyed.

    1 out of 5 stars Spritual Poison.......2007-07-16

This is one of the most abusive and manipulative teachings under the classification "Christian literature" that I have ever read. While the idea and importance of submitting to Gods inherent authority is indisputable, The agendaized, one-sided presentation of it is categorically false. In this book Bevere neglects to teach the full council of God as represented by Christ in his resistance to the religious authority of His day. As is shown in the Gospels, Christ rebukes, resists, confronts, questions, and evades those in authority until His appointed time. Never, through Christ's actions or words, does He suggest mindless submission to errant authority. John the Baptist resisted and rebuked the religious and civil authority; Paul confronted Peter's hypocrisy, he didn't submit to and follow his wrong example; although David didn't take Saul's life, because it wasn't his to take, neither did David utterly submit to Saul's errant authority but withstood Saul until God's appointed time.
This Book promotes "a different Gospel" Throughout this book. It suggests that we must get right first (thru repentance) before God will accept us. Though repentance is an essential component of salvation it doesn't suggest perfection but a change in pursuit; we no longer pursue the things of the world but the things of God. All throughout his book Bevere's statements suggest a works salvation, a salvation that is obtained through correctness and self-effort rather than the work that Christ has done. Bevere suggests that God is not able to have grace (unmerited favor) on anyone unless his personal work is right. Everywhere I turn in Bevere's book I read a gospel of works salvation. Biblically, those who teach or hold this position are categorically, false teachers.

THE GOSPEL IS SIMPLE; Christ died for the sins of the world, not only for eternal life but also for the result of sin in the world today. You don't have to work for God to be able to have mercy on you; God is able regardless of your efforts. It is faith alone in Christ and His atoning work on the cross that saves. No amount of work can be done, in this present life, to improve your condition, Christ has done it all; faith in His work is sufficient for all and that faith in Christ secures your right standing with the Almighty. If you believe that Christ died on the cross for your sins, then you are "in Christ."
So why do we work? Simple, it is an expression of love and appreciation to God for His infinite mercy. When we circumvent Christ's work with our own we are attempting to work for our salvation and this brings us under the requirement of being 100% perfect to be saved.

I plead with anyone considering this book, in the name of our Lord and savior, Christ Jesus, avoid it, IT IS POISON!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Doctrine of Demons.......2007-07-11

There are numerous instances of "proof-texting" in this book. Scriptures are taken out of context in order to create a new doctrine, similar to what Satan attempted with Jesus. Specifically, Acts 26:14, Matthew 21:31, 1 Corinthians 11:31, 2 Peter 2:19, Exodus 9:16, 1 Peter 2:17, and the list goes on. Here are three important examples:

    1) Bevere quotes Psalm 91:1-He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. A shadow is a likeness of someone, meaning Christlikeness produces rest. Bevere extrapolates the word shadow to mean covering, but the word "covering" isn't in the Bible the way Bevere teaches.

    2) Exodus 9:16 "But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." The words "raised you up" in the original Hebrew mean "to stand." In context, this means that God spared Pharaoh from the plagues, thereby granting him mercy. Bevere implies that God put Pharaoh in power, giving him authority. Bevere assigns the work of the enemy to God.

    3) Bevere quotes Romans 9:18 and Romans 11:33-34 as if they read together. This totally changes the meaning!

We are told in the 10 Commandments to honor our parents, but to worship only God. We must never idolize pastors or institutions. It is time for reform in the church! Moses' authority was Old Covenant. Jesus is the New Covenant head of the church, and His church is a living organism, not in institution. Never forget, Jesus criticized and was insubordinate towards religious authority/hierarchy, yet all the while, He was submitted to God.

    5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2007-07-09

This book, along with another of John Bevere's books "How to Respond When You Feel Mistreated" have absolutely changed my life for the better. I have a freedom in my heart that I have never experienced!

    1 out of 5 stars Unnecessary gimmick.......2007-10-02

I feel bad giving a Bible a 1-star review, but I think it's important to draw attention to some faults in this particular version.

"The Bible in 90 Days" simply takes the number of pages in the entire Bible and divides them into 90 daily readings. At the top of every 12th page is simply a box marking the start of the next day's reading -- which falls in the middle of a verse quite often. You don't need to buy a new Bible for this -- just divide the # of pages in your edition by 90 and read that many each day!

This edition also doesn't include any study helps to help make the daily readings understandable.

I've helped hundreds of people read thru the entire Bible, and many have told me that they found some Old Testament sections very hard to get thru (and I agree for myself!). Books like Numbers can be hard to read -- especially if asked to read chapter after chapter without explanation. "The Bible in 90 Days" makes this error -- 12 pages of Leviticus is a lot harder for most people to read than 12 pages of Matthew. A better approach for most people is to read a bit of the Old Testament and a bit of the New Testament each day. This not only holds the reader's interest, but also gives them a better comprehensive view of Scripture, understanding how Old & New Testaments work together.

If you don't already own a Bible then maybe there's merit to buying this one to motivate you to start reading -- but you might be better off spending your money on another edition with study helps. Otherwise, this just seems like an unnecessary gimmick.

    4 out of 5 stars A Challenge Worth Taking.......2007-07-16

The Bible in 90 Days is an excellent reading plan for someone who has read most or all of the Bible before. By reading 12 pages each day you will begin to see the Bible in a new light. It becomes God's story rather than man's story. You will see that from the beginning God had a plan to restore us to Himself.
This reading plan is prefect for someone who has been following Jesus for years and wants to see the Bible in a fresh way. I would not, however, recommend it to someone who is new to the Christian faith or just checking it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day.......2007-03-09

The BEST purchase I have made in a long time. I have always wanted to read the Bible from front to back and this Bible makes it so easy to do just that. It gives you starting points and ending points. The NIV version is very easy to understand. I recommend it for the first time reader or the experienced.

I have been keeping up with my daily reading. I love the large print of this Bible and am learning so much from the Old Testament. I would recommend this method of reading the Bible to anyone. I use a highlighter as I read to mark things that I might want to study further.

Easy to read and to understand. I find myself reading it more like a novel and sharing with my friends as if it were a soap opera.

    Book Description

With Cover & Bake, the editors at Cook's Illustrated set out to revive the venerable casserole. From Turkey Tetrazzini and Chicken Divan to Crab Imperial and Hoppin' John, casserole cooking represents the ingenuity and practicality of the American cook. In Cover & Bake, the editors set out to investigate the old standards and in the process have re-imagined the art of the one-dish meal to meet the demands of today's cook.

Here you will find classic assemble and bake casseroles like Macaroni and Cheese and Creamy Chicken and Rice as well as more inventive dishes like Mediterranean Chicken Bake and Polenta Casserole with Italian Sausage. We've experimented with techniques that allow you to cook everything in just one pot where possible, avoiding the need for hours of preparation and clean up just to get a casserole in the oven. And nearly every recipe can be made ahead allowing busy cooks to serve these wholesome dishes on a busy weeknight.

Looking beyond what most people consider to be a casserole, the editors offer a rather original take on the subject with inventive skillet "casseroles," slow cooker meals that are really worth serving, pot pies with multiple topping options (many of which you can make ahead), oven braises and stews that cook in a low oven for hours so you won't have to stand over a hot stove, and breakfast and brunch dishes that can be assembled the night before.

In addition, this book contains all the relevant tastings and testings conducted in America's Test Kitchen. Learn which casserole dish is our hands-down favorite. Are all storage containers created the same? Want to know which slow cooker has the best combination of features?

In short, Cover & Bake is filled with 200 one-dish meals for everyday cooking. We've made these casseroles a whole lot better tasting while making sure that what everyone loves about casseroles remains - the fact that they are practical one-dish meals that require a minimum of fuss and last minute attention.

    5 out of 5 stars Good recipes.......2007-04-26

I have made several recipes from this book and they have been great and easy to follow. this is the first cookbook I own from Cook's Illustrated and I'm now adding one more to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cookbook.......2007-04-03

This is my favorite cookbook, and I use it often. It not only has wonderful recipes that I use often, but also features little snippets and articles such as which tomato paste is best, how to know if your eggs are fresh, and how to choose a dutch oven.

My favorite recipes are the Macaroni and Cheese, which is a favorite at pot luck dinners, the Beef Stroganoff, Beef and Guiness Stews, 4 cheese pasta with basil and tomatoes, and there are dozens more I haven't attempted yet.

This book is not about your mother's (or maybe just my mother's) casseroles. The ingredients are top notch and the result is fantastic. I've given it as a gift on several occasions and can't recommend it enough.

There is not, as another person mentioned, an abundance of photos, and I do wish there were more, but I'd prefer great recipes and fewer photos over fabulous glossy photos and lackluster recipes, which I've found in plenty of other books!

4 out of 5 stars Hungry for more pictures.......2007-03-08

I am inspired by photos of the finished products in any cookbook. So, this one disappointed with only a handful of photos. I would pay a few $ more for an abundance of delicious looking pictures. Cook's Illustrated is very dependable for excellent recipes and continues to be in this book. They have ironed out the wrinkles and achieve perfection with these recipes.

    4 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2007-02-05

When I look at reader reviews of cookbooks, I want to see names of specific recipes that were outstanding, so here's one I tried last night: page 61, Chicken Casserole with Spring Vegetables and Tarragon Cream Sauce (oh, gosh, I just noticed it says it's for 6-8 people, and my husband and I snarfed down half!) Any other recommendations out there??

5 out of 5 stars SO GOOD I BOUGHT TWO.......2007-01-09

This is a great cookbook for anyone that has to cook for a group or just likes to cook dishes that can be enjoyed for the next few days. It is filled with warm and comforting recipes from a wide range of backrounds. Every recipe I have tried has come out as wonderfully as it was described. As is the case with all of the Best Recipe Classics cook books by the Cooks Illustrated editors this book includes comprehensive descriptions of the history of the recipes as well as the trial and error lessons that the test kitchen discovered in the process of perfecting the recipe. I have enjoyed this book so much that I gave it to a friend for Christmas.
