3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the reviewers have indicated.......2007-10-06

I purchased this book about a year ago and put it to use in the last 2 weeks with 7 interviews. The feedback I gained from the reviewers was much better than most of the information I gleaned from the book.

It is important that no one, while searching for a job, use the answers in the book. Apparently they are wrote and are fully expected by the interviewers. The real thing to learn from the book is to begin with an example but always lead into how you learned from whatever the incident was and bring that to what you have accomplished with what you learned.

Overall I am not unhappy I bought the book, but it will not be a book I keep as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars The best book for your interview.......2007-07-17

I found this book to be an excellent reading to prepare for an interview. All the chapters are important and to the point. I prepared for two interviews with this book and the interviewers were impressed with me. The recommendation of knowing as much as you can about the industry, company and job is priceless. I went as far as to prepare a marketing report on one interview. Good book, buy it, it is definetely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful, one for the permanent bookshelf.......2007-06-04

Used this extensively when preparing for interviews during first year of MBA-landed multiple offers, not just because of this book but it surely helped. I have found it useful even for changing jobs (not just useful for recent graduates as one reviewer said). Came back to Amazon to purchase yet another copy as I have given away two previous copies I owned. Best best, flip through it in a store like Barnes and Noble and if you like it, come buy online...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best practical guides ever.......2007-05-27

I digested the book, and did everything Dr. Leanne recommended. I tested it by researching an industry I had no experience with, and landed an interview even though no jobs were on offer. I had spent about 6 weeks reading everything I could and prepared all the interview questions in the second section of the book. It turned out that I was more knowledgeable about the company than the manager who interviewed me, so it turned out to be a very strange experience. First, he resented that a senior manager sent him to interview me. He then yelled at me several times, and accused me of lying about white papers that the company had released.

After that exciting interview, I am convinced that this is one of the best practical books I've ever read. Where else can you find a book that tells you exactly how to upstage a senior manager with 13 years of industry experience?

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-08-20

After reading this book I actually got a job after over a year. It helped me a lot with my interview technique which pretty much did not exist. The book is arranged in such a way that if certain questions don't relate to your profession you can just skip through it. The questions are clear (and many familiar) and the responses sound like real people talking and can be easily modified to suit your profession. Anyone who hs been without a job for a long time or short will find this book quite helpful.

Recruiting and retaining the proper employees is an undeniable key to corporate success, and The Headhunter's Edge offers proven advice for those on either side of the process. Want to attract the best skills to your company, or find the best company for your skills? Jeffrey E. Christian, a high-level search consultant for corporations like Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, says we've entered a talent economy in which thinking like an executive recruiter can make the difference whether you're hiring or looking for work. The bulk of the book details suggestions for finding the right people (don't rely too much on academic credentials, do seek résumés displaying upward movement), uncovering the candidates who can sell more than themselves (prepare interviews for specific positions, craft questions that show decision-making and problem-solving aptitude), ensuring that potential employees are who they claim to be (go beyond the references initially supplied, meet personally with critical sources), and retaining those you ultimately select (don't be stingy with compensation, benefits, responsibility, or recognition). Additionally, it shows how to turn this advice around and advance your own career (use well-prepared phone calls to stand out, pay attention to events inside and outside your organization). Packed with loads of such practical and specific tips, this book is recommended for anyone involved on any level in the job market. --Howard Rothman

4 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all managers.......2005-03-10

This book is called "The headhunter's edge" but Christian's mission is to make any hiring manager "Think like a headhunter"

Now Christian is not just ANY headhunter. He's the founder leader of Christian & Timbers, the pioneer in recuitment firms that focussed on IT industry and was the person who showed Carly Fiorina to HP

In the book, Christian looks at what managers need to do, "look for talent" most of the time and shows that what differentiates good organizations is talent. He seeks to define what talent and leadership is, he says it is NOT a good education or experience but mostly "soft" factors that one needs to sense like integrity, humility, intellectual firepower and others.

He also believes that talent is contextual, and that good leaders spend an inordinate amount of time pursuing great talent, or ensuring that great talent does not leave their doors.

So, its not a book just for headhunters, recruitment people or CEOs. Even a manager who has the final decision on who gets on his team will benefit from this book.

I would recommend reading this book with more academic articles on leadership and EQ. Then Christian's examples will put things more into perspective.

What is more interesting is the example of top CEOs who put a great focus on recruitment process for their organizations like Bill Gates, Jack Welch and even VCs like Vinod Khosla.

5 out of 5 stars Do not have to be a CEO to benefit here.......2002-09-29

At first glance, it would seem that this wonderful read was intended solely for those running billion dollar companies (those multi-million concerns can get by without a ferocity for talent). Glance again. Everything Mr. Christian says is just as true for the 150-employee distributor or metal-stamping company as it is for the colossal tech firm. Human beings ARE the corporation. They dictate the momentum a business pushes against or gets swept away by.

In a fell-swoop, Christian validates the entire headhunting industry at its core purpose-to find the MOST appropriate candidate for the position. There is a world of difference between great and irreplaceable. Yes, a small percentage of concerns have the luxury of hiring an "outsider" to find their next star. Yet, this book isn't so much aimed at the IBM and Dell's of the world as it may first appear. Christian implores UNIQUE WIDGETS INC. to do everything in its power to grab, and hold onto, persons who MAKE the company.

Again, this is as much for the corner barbershop as it is for a company bent on cornering the market. No business person can afford to disagree with this man.

4 out of 5 stars somewhat helpful in organizing my search efforts.......2007-10-02

this book didn't say anything new that you can't find elsewhere or on the internet. but it surely saves me a lot of trouble googling by putting everything together.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Overview... but there are better books out there.......2007-07-06

When I checked out this book, I was expecting some innovative method that would drastically change my approach to the job search. Instead, what I read was repackaged information that you could find on the Internet. Instead, I would recommend 10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search: Everything You Need to Get the Job You Want in 24 Hours - Or Less. I found that book to be a more concise and thought provoking tool that helped me succeed in getting my most recent job as a Regional Sales Director.

5 out of 5 stars Great Job Search Book.......2007-06-13

I have to tell you this book is outstanding. It was both very informative and entertaining. Searching for a job is never fun. And if you're fortunate, you'll never have to search for many jobs in your life. If you're not experienced at looking for work, the search process can be arduous at best. This book provides a structure/methodology by which to conduct a highly effective job search and helps ease the "pain" of looking for work. I would recommend it to anyone from a new college grad to an experienced executive.

5 out of 5 stars At last....a book that "understands".......2007-02-05

As I read through the Pierson method I was so happy to see a job search method that combines an excellent description of the realities of a job search with a true understanding of the job seeker. Readers will come to know why they balk at the idea of a cold call and spend many hours surfing the internet. And they will also gain confidence in themselves, along with a system that works.

Pierson knows the job search trail and he knows what it's like to look for a job. Bravo for this wonderful book.

Jess Dods, MBA
Career coach

5 out of 5 stars Focus, Structure, Accountability.......2006-10-19

The hardest part of a job search, at least for me, is treating the search itself like a job. Pierson provides structure and methodology to your search but also, and importantly, accountability to yourself through the use of a progress chart. He offers a common sense, step by step process that helps you create an effective marketing plan for yourself along with the not inconsequential side effect of a boost in self confidence.

Book Description

Headhunters--third-party agents paid a fee by companies for locating job candidates--perform a unique sales role. The product they sell is people, matching candidates with jobs and companies with candidates. Headhunters affect the professional lives of thousands of employees every day, and their work has a profound, though hidden, effect on the employment picture in the United States. William Finlay and James E. Coverdill draw on interviews with and observations of headhunters and on analysis of headhunting training seminars, lectures, industry newsletters, and a mail survey of headhunting firms. The result is a frank and sometimes unsettling portrait of the aims, attitudes, and tactics of practitioners.

The payment of fees has shifted from candidates to employers, and recruiters now find people to fit jobs rather than the other way around. Finlay and Coverdill address what they feel is a serious lack of research about the work headhunters do and how they do it. Their book is built around three major questions: What advantages do employers derive from using third-party agents to handle candidate search and recruitment? How are headhunters able to accomplish the double sale ("selling" candidates to employers and employers to candidates)? What criteria do headhunters use for selecting candidates? In the process, Finlay and Coverdill link their findings to larger issues of institutional and historical context, revealing the economic and political reasons clients use headhunters, demonstrating how headhunters manipulate clients and candidates, and assessing the impact of headhunters' actions on hiring decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting read, even if repetetive on the main theme.......2007-05-13

I found the book to be full of useful material. Although sometimes one has climb around the author's ego, this will be one of the books that I re-read every few months.

3 out of 5 stars For Contingency Recruiters only.......2005-07-24

Not a bad academic study of the contingency recruiter world. It lays out the basic recruiting process for the low to mid level staffing world.

5 out of 5 stars Best comprehensive headhunting book for headhunters.......2005-05-13

I have been working in this field for 25 years, and read most of the major books. Although I am a big fan of Bill Radin, this
book blew me away. Perhaps it's social science orientation rather than "war stories" that you find in other books of this ilk. True, as another reviewer says it does not have a major web focus, but the web is a tool and more for HR than headhunters. Companies don't pay 5, and occasionally, 6 figure fees for what they can get off of a $500 ad on Careerbuilder or Monster.com. The data doesn't lie. Anyone that wants to start, improve, or reach their peak in this often misunderstood profession should definitely read this book. It's a fairly quick read, but it tells you what you need to do to be a successful headhunter via in depth surveys of successful practitioners.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of how headhunters work, but in mind 90's.......2002-10-01

As a novice in the recruiting/headhunting industry doing research for a business plan, I found this book to be very informative. It has input from a lot of real time headhunters, so you get to understand how they work on an industry level and on a day to day basis. However, in spite of vast research the authors have put into this book, most of the research was carried out in mid nineties (although the book was published in 2002) so the word "internet" comes up only twice (or a few times) in the book. One gets an impression that the resume/candidate database is one of the most important assets for a headhunter, but I wonder to what extent that is relevant given that a few resume databases such as monster, careerbuilder, hotjobs (some of these sites are mentioned only once or not at all) will give anyone access to a greater number of resumes' than someone who has been in this business for a long time and relies on the resume's in their own database.
But, is in any industry, certain things always remain the same, even with the influence of the internet, and this book does a great job of shedding light on how headhunters work in the marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For All Headhunters.......2002-03-08

This book is really excellent. The authors have captured the essence of what it is to be a headhunter. Absolutely accurate. A must read for all headhunters, corporate recruiters, employers and employment professionals. This book is filled with perceptive insights, analysis and conclusions that accurately portray how and why headhunters do what they do. Headhunters, as well as people who use headhunters, will benefit greatly from this information. After reading this book you will know more about headhunting than many headhunters themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on how to WIN the job, NOT nail the interview.......2007-09-28

This is a book that teaches you how to find the right job for you! Not just taking any job that comes along for the sake of "getting a job". Details how to find more information on the company(ies) you are interested in working at, and how to use that information to your advantage. This is NOT the typical interview book - it's about getting the job and setting yourself apart from everyone else. Nice section on negotiating the offer as well. Quick read, definitely worth the time!

5 out of 5 stars At last original content when it comes to job interviews.......2007-01-19

I must say I really found Nick Corcodilos' take on job interviewing refreshing. He clearly states that we spend far too much time trying to answer specific questions. We should take control of the job interview and show the hiring person that we can do the job. I find much of his information very valid and very worthwhile. Is is always practical, maybe not.

I like that he emphasizes you must do more than post your resume online on a few job boards and hope for the best. This honestly is a frustrating and almost pointless way to search for a job considering less and 2% of people who post resumes find jobs via this search method. He really stresses that you shouldn't be spending all of your time applying to these jobs, but find the hiring person at the company you want to work for and present yourself there.

Unlike most job interview books he really stresses you are on a marketing campaign, and you should do your best to market yourself to people who really do the hiring. While some people view the information as redundant, I think he has valid points. He is passionate about his message. He really feels your job search should not be a passive act, but you are out there for yourself.

I would highly recommend reading this book, and adapting some of his suggestions to your job search. While the material can be redundant, it is worthwhile, and really serves to emphasize a very solid message of you need to participate actively in your job search. You must also shine above the other canidates when your interview comes.

3 out of 5 stars Some compelling points, but not entirely useful.......2006-08-24

Overall, I appreciated Nick Corcodilos's book. He analyzes with wit what exactly is wrong with America's employment system and provides innovative advice about how to revolutionalize the typical interview process by "doing the job" instead of answering typecasted questions that have nothing to do with the actual work or the person's ability to do the job.

However, this book is impractical for many reasons. One reason I did not like this book is that it is obviously addressed to a highly educated audience that want to work solely in the private sector. It gives no practical advice to those who want to work in government or non-profit, where the ultimate goal is not necessarily to "make the company more profitable", as Corcodilos repeatedly posits. In the government sector, you are NOT going to be considered for employment unless you fill out the required pre-employment screening forms, no matter what. Corcodilos also tacitly implies throughout his book the assumption that all employers are benign by continually asserting that "the employer wants to hire you". Most of us know that this is simply not true. Many employers size up potential employees based on factors irrelevant to the job, such as their race, ethnicity, age, sex, weight, height, personality, attractiveness, and whether they think this person would be a threat to their job or position in the future.

Another reason I do not like this book is that it does not give practical advice about how to sell one's self when the position they are interviewing for or seeking is new, or when the person is trying to break into an industry that they don't have much experience in. These people are not going to be able to convince a hiring manager to let them "do the job" if they don't know what that "job" is going to be like in the first place because it is new and experimental, or if they don't have much ground to stand on because of a lack of industry-specific experience. I would have liked to see a section on how people can convince employers to give them a chance based on their current skills and potential, but that is not addressed in this book.

I agree with another person's review that there are definitely many managers out there who would not allow a candidate to "take control of the interview". Many employers are not even competent enough at conducting the typical interview, much less for allowing the candidate to take control of it - this requires a certain level of imagination and open-mindedness on the part of the employer, something a lot of employers and/or their hiring processes unfortunately do not have. More practical advice could be given about how to maneuver during typical interviews and to demonstrate how much the job applicant really knows or is capable of.

In short, this book contains a lot of truths and creative ideas, but important ones were left out, and they are not altogether entirely practical.

3 out of 5 stars Good Advice, but is it practical?.......2006-03-26

I picked this book up thinking it might be about new approaches to hiring the right people. When I quickly saw that it was about job hunting, I started to put it down but something about it intrigued me. Nick Corcodilos, author of ASK THE HEADHUNTER: REINVENTING THE INTERVIEEW TO WIN THE JOB had been in the headhunting business for 18 years when he wrote this book. Its premise is rather simplistic, but there is some useful information here for job seekers.

The first thing you learn in this book is to forget everything you know about the traditional methods of securing a position. IN summary, the book tells you, rather than send out countless resumes hoping for a few interviews, focus more on a few companies you wish to work for and be more diligent in your approach. In other words, instead of hunting with a shotgun and hoping a few pellets land your prey, use a rifle with a few well placed shots.

I won't say the book is without merit, but some of the advice does seem rather impractical. I can see how the techniques offered by Corcodilos could be very effective, I don't see many hiring managers allowing a job candidate to "control the interview" and "do the job" in the manner prescribed in many instances. If you can find a hiring manager tolerant enough to allow doing these things, you should be a shoe-in, but that's a big "if".

My biggest complaint about this book is, it is very repetitive. Though smallish at just over 200 pages, what is said here could easily have been reduced to a 50 page booklet with the same effectiveness. Job seekers will learn from this book, but be prepared to read basically the same information, over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Be different, get hired faster.......2005-10-27

Instead of memorizing canned answers to questions like, "Tell me about yourself," Nick shows you how to completely take over the interview and conduct it on your terms.

The book's thesis is this: Do the job in the interview. It's a revolutionary concept and deceptively simple. If the book is at all repetitive, as some reviewers have complained, it's only to make sure that you really get the concept.

Once you do "get it" and follow Nick's advice, you will literally have no competition for the job you're interviewing for.

I know this to be true for 3 reasons:

1) Nick is an experienced headhunter, not some "ivory tower" type with no concept of how the hiring game is played.
2) I used his techniques myself (without knowing them, because it was 15 years ago) when I used to work for other people. And I was able to get hired rather easily by "doing the job" right there, in the interview.
3) In my book, "51 Ways to Find a Job Fast -- Guaranteed," I write about similar proven techniques, such as, "How to start work before the interview."

Nick's book is really worth your while. I recommend it to all my clients and friends.

5 out of 5 stars This book is SWEET MEAT!.......2005-10-02

I wrote a review when this book first arrived BUT somehow it didn't post back in 2001. Everything Mr. Bass does is QUALITY! I should know, I have written two books about him and his work with RANKIN/BASS. To my delight, it was reported in VARIETY just a few short days ago that this book's rights were purchased for a feature film project by NICOLE KIDMAN's company and the film is to star the GREAT actress! I could only hope for a part in the film. What a GREAT story! These days I have been recording a solo CD with the GIN BLOSSOMS (Robin Wilson Producing) BUT I still continue my work with RANKIN/BASS and their work has never been more popular. JULES has also written a few Children's books based on HERB, THE VEGETARIAN DRAGON and has shown great range with all the various things he has done in his career...including Directing MAD MONSTER PARTY. I would suggest that you disregard several of the negative reviewers here and check out this book before the film comes out.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to get through & not very realistic.......2005-08-10

This book had parts that were very hard to get through. The whole story is very unrealistic. It is obvious this book was written by a man, as the female characters were impossible to relate to and the male characters were forgiven under unforgivable circumstances. When I finished this book, I couldn't wait to read something fun and sexy. Wasn't a complete waste of time but I wouldn't recommend a friend to read it.

        5 out of 5 stars Irresistably funny!.......2002-11-09

I could not disagree more with the review posted by Anna Mitchell. First of all, I question her credibility as a reviewer given the fact that she has trouble with simple spelling....can she really understand the various 'layers' to Headhunters? Far from simplistic, this story hits the human heart hard and accurately, guising the important questions in a glittering gilded cage of ribald wit and wicked humor. So much of our popular culture cultivates disatisfation for the average woman - she is literally pummeled by advertising, celeb shows, and slick magazines into feeling as if everyone out there is living a 'better life' somehow. 'Everyone' being the rich, the glam slam crowd. Bass' ultimate message is a wonderful one: at the risk of reducing it to the simplistic, this tale dares the reader (male or female) to live life to the fullest - and to understand that there is no jewel or car or material possession, that fame, glamor, and wealth are but tin compared to the shining gold of real happiness and the power of Love.

Piercingly perceptive, wildly entertaining - it's no surprise this was snapped up for film adaptation. I'll be the first in line.

2 out of 5 stars thinking of very boring!.......2002-07-10

I really thought the sounds of the novel of Headhunters would be fun and different to think about. The writer Jules Bass makes it sound like a fun very unreasonable things for middle aged women to enjoy reading about. I was wrong about the novel hard to keep my train of thoughts on when reading.
When the coffee shop seen of the four women, Eleanor, Irene, Carla, and Darlene meet to help deal with there personal life. The writer trys to make it seem as if the novelis about your everyday middle aged women, helping support each other with thier poblems. Bass make it seem like the support group is to help each of the four womens problems and try to meet new people. Bass makes this seem like four women enjoying the single life, he sets the seen about the four who plan a yearly vacation just to try to get away seem like good ideal at first.
Bass trys to use different types of career women uses such as, a avon lady, lawyer, booker at modeling agency and a women going to be a nurse. These four different careers are like the seen of women working to make a living on there own. Bass makes the jobs of an average paying job where they only can go on a small vacation each year.
The writer Bass what was he thinking about making up the unreasonable ideal of the vaction to Monto Carlo a very expencive and very much unaffordable for the four women.
Then thiers the seen about were the four Eleanor, Darlene, Irene and Carla go to a Hollywood Castaway like that would really happen, then play dress up get excited about dressing in the gowns, jewery very much not real and the cocktail dresses. How they knew someone to help the four ladies dress out of this world. The seen of a dream is as if that would only be a dream not real.
The writter Bass there goes to the four men Julio, Thevor, Mariuce and Jean. That there just happen to be four men doing the same crazy ideal, wear outfits out of this world too, the name brands and it all. How he thinks they would do the same thing.

Then the writter Bass trys to see a very unreal seen where they go to Monto Carlo. The name of the vacation places make it seem very rich and famous dressed up place. The only place where the women would only meet the rich and famous. The writter makes it seem to be a very high class place to where you could only use big money and where fancy dresses to be worn in the hotel and casinos.
Bass uses a seen like king and queens would only be seen, the entreces of the hotel needs to get real about this. Does Bass think that anyone would ever think that a place that has never seen the four women in that part of thier town. And that thier going to be introduced like a rich and famous person whos known. Then Bass writes about four men who are going to be done the same way.
I'm sorry but the part of the novel where they keep buying and playing the games, use of the credit cards. Bass makes them seem so unreal with the great deal of about the amount the women spend you can not even think of spending that much money. Bass makes the money spend so unreal with big amounts of money.
I really hate to down a writer about there work. But Bass could have made the novel more real or a more likely amount of money spent instead of millions of dollars he makes it seem that the four women spend. Then the ending of the book where the four go to jail and the they think of another ideal about a band. The writer does make me want to read the book somewhat. But he could make it more interesting. I don't like to down writers because I know it take a lot of great deal of talent to be a writer who get thier own books published and they are really trying to get the point that they are thinking across. I think I can speak by saying this novel was very boring and very hard to read the whole novel with much interest at all. I would suggest to anyone who plans on reading this novel to go check it out at a liberary not to buy it. But in my oppinion don't waste your time. The only person I would suggest to read this novel if they are looking for a novel very unreal to think about. I think anyone else who has read this novel would agree to what I have wrote about this novel not good to read at all. So my final review of the novel is do not waste the time or energy on reading this novel you lose interest at about one-third the way through the novel. Wish I could give a better reason to for readers to read this, but theirs not one . Sorry not a good novel at all to read.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Charming.......2002-01-19

Jules writes with such a charismatic style that captivates your mind and makes you wish you were there with the women embarking on a journey. It takes you through so many of the emotions of us women have about wanting to get out and take chances. And lets not forget about the men in the book... this book is a must read you wont be able to put it down.

1 out of 5 stars As bad as her name.......2005-02-01

I read this book a while ago (I was a self employed exec recruiter for fifteen years) and it still stands out as one of the silliest. The amount of information either a Manager or another headhunter will glean from this material is negligible. The pages discussing her "schedule" in which she shows us all how hard she works are so laughably self-important that you should skim them in the bookstore for humor's sake.

        1 out of 5 stars Yuk.......2002-11-07

Quite frankly, this book is more about negating the idea of the executive recruiters' three martini lunches rather than providing good job search tips.

4 out of 5 stars Good advice while getting your feet wet.......2002-03-22

In many ways this is kind of an off kilter book - Reynolds seems to want to be aiming at the executive, but in reality I think her book is applicable to just below that level, who are just starting out in higher managerial searches. Taken from that starting point, the book is a very good overview and advice book. Much of what she says is common sense, but sometimes it's nice to have it reiterated so that we don't forget it. As someone who is going to eventually be looking for new employment and to move on up, I found it in some ways reassuring to be led step by step through things. I don't believe I learned much new, there was certainly no "ah ha!" moments. But it did assure me that the path I've been looking at is correct, and what I know is valuable. She is not afraid to touch upon those areas a lot of people are uncomfortable with - such as compensation negotiation. Reading this book is like a comfortable session with a career counselor who's there to calm you down and help you through the next step. While currently job hunting has slowed a bit, it will rebound. And anything that helps us get a leg up on the competition is appreciated.

        1 out of 5 stars I'm happy I did not buy it!.......2002-01-05

After seeing an interview of Ms. Reynolds on CNN's "The Neil Cavuto Show" I was interested in learning more about her. I searched the web and found her book on the Amazon.com site, with your reviews & excerpts. After reading the excerpts, and almost falling out of my chair laughing about "The Week of a Recruiter", I pondered about the last twenty years I have spent as a HEADHUNTER. Ms. Reynolds and I must have worked on two different planets - in the same profession.
I have and still read many books about career searching, the recruiting industry, etc. There are some damn good how to do it books on the market - not this one. Who needs someone to give us a minute-by-minute account of her personal and professional life - who cares! Can you help me find a good recruiter, can you help me find a good job, can you help me find an industry that won't fall apart this or next year? If you need help, buy a book by the name of "What Color Is My Parachute", I believe that is the correct title. This book gives you clear and concise information, not some obtuse opinions.
The main, and only, objective for executive search firms is to find the best candidate for their clients, not to find people jobs who want more money, bigger titles, or easyier commutes. In our twenty year history, and the many placements that we have to our credit - the best candidates that we have found for our clients are people who are happily employed at their present positions and not even thinking about looking at other opportunities. The best way to find a job is to be the very best you can at your present position, be active in your industry associations and organizations, write articles for your industry websites, magazines, etc. Be visible. Be the best you can be and the executive search industry will find you. There I just wrote my first book!
If you do happen to find yourself out of work, call a few friends and ask for any recommendations they would share with you about executive search firms that are industry related and that they have had experience with. Best of all check industry, and specific company websites, there are a chuck full of companies looking for people. Ms. Reynolds is correct in pointing out that there are differences in the types of executive search firms. It boils down to two main differences; retained & contingency. Try to work with retained search firms that have a retainer from a specific company for a specific position, as opposed to contingency firms. This will at least assure you that they are not just collecting resumes. That is what most contingency search firms send most of their time doing.
Ms. Reynolds is correct again about being open and honest with a recruiter that you trust. But you have to be very careful with whom you trust personal information. When I ask a potential candidate about their martial status, their remuneration package, whom do they report to, etc. and the answer is "I will not divulge that information", I simply thank them and hung-up. Be firm not stupid. You could be passing up that knock on the door that only comes around once, and you will never know what you missed out on.
Ms. Reynolds' book is nice but I don't think it will get you a job. When an executive search consultant does call you, be polite, be honest, and remember it is a very small world.

        4 out of 5 stars Thorough Primer.......2001-12-14

"Be Hunted" is a very thorough primer on the various ways one can attract the attention of search consultants. For many, this book can provide a rare and useful insight into the intricacies of the search profession, as well as the candidate/recruiter relationship. But as a seasoned search consultant myself, I believe it's important that the reader understand that "getting on the search consultant's radar screen" is only one aspect of the overall job search process.

A much more comprehensive book on this topic is "The Secrets of Executive Search ... Professional Strategies for Managing Your Personal Job Search," by Robert Melancon. "Secrets" is similar to "Be Hunted" in that both were written by seasoned executive search consultants. But "Secrets" is much broader in scope and focuses on those aspects of the overall personal search job process that really make the difference between success and failure.
