    Book Description

Utilizing a variety of hands-on lessons, this book introduces readers to the basics of Pro/Engineer® Wildfire™, one of the most widely used CAD/CAM software programs in the world. The author's basic premise is that the more parts, assemblies, and drawings one creates using Pro/E® Wildfire, the better one learns the software. With this in mind, each lesson introduces a new set of commands with an incrementally more difficult set of parts while building on previous lessons. The parts created (in Part One of the book) are used to create assemblies (Part Two) and generate drawings (Part Three). Readers are able to work with actual completed parts, assemblies, and drawings in a short-lesson format, instead of building large complex projects where basic commands may be overshadowed and lost in a complicated process. Rather than attempting to cover all of Pro/E Wildfire's features, this book provides an introduction to the software, makes one reasonably proficient in its use, and establishes a firm basis for exploring and growing with the program.

3 out of 5 stars Best Pro Engineer Book Available.......2006-08-11

While fairly good at describing how to use the tools available in Pro-E, the Definitions and explanations of conceptual use of these tools is lacking. I do not recommend this book for people who are trying to learn Pro Engineer on their own. Use of this book is best in an setting where an experienced user or instructor are available for assistance.
For 100$ this book does not stand up to a 50$ book for learning another problem like Alias Maya. But certainly because of a lack of competition, this book seems to be the best choice.

    Positive Aspects:
1)After completing this book you should have a strong grasp of the fundamental of Pro Engineer and should be able to use most of its processes and tools.
    including:
    -Extrusions
    -Revolving Protrusions
    -Cuting (negative Protrusions)
    -Revolving Cuts
    -Chamfering
    -Threading.
    -Setup and Environmental settings
    -Dimensional Values
    -The Configuration File system
    -Datum planes
    -Layers
    -Parent/Child Hierachy system
    -Sketching and 3d navigation
    -Point manipulation
    -Unit control
    -Shell (Molding) Tool
    -Sweeps and Trajectories
-Exploded views and Sub assembly Drawings
-Drawing layouts, Title Blocks, Print views, and Part Lists

    2) Good layout, and clear instructions. Pictures are complete, and do a good job of illustrating steps. Step by step instructions allow for quick results in making models and learning the software when understood.

    3) After completion of the book, most fundamental products can be completed in Pro-E. While it is not a complete explanation of all of its features, the topics covered more that give a solid foundation for creating most 3d objects and using models to communicate in the real world.

    Negative Aspects:
    1) Definitions and Explainations
The books is horrible at explaining why tool and process are important of necessary, or defining what they are. People unfamiliar with CAD lingo, will struggle with this books definitions.

Take this Quote explaining Datums and Layers: "Datums and layers are two of the most useful mechanisms for creating and organizing your design (Fig. 5.1). Features such as datum planes and datum axes are essential for the creation of all parts, assemblies, and drawings using Pro/E. Layers are an essential tool for grouping items and performing operations on them, such as selecting, displaying or blanking, plotting, and suppressing. Any number of layers can be created. User Defined names are available, so layer names can be easily recognized. Most companies have a layering scheme that serves as a default standard so that all projects follow the same naming conventions and objects/items are easily located by anyone with access. Layer information, such as display status, is stored with each individual part, assembly, or drawing."

This explanation is the only one located in the book explaining Datums and layers in the book, but no where does it define what a datum or layers is. It doesn't mention how datum planes are imaginary references from which measurements are made. Instead seems to say, that we should use them because everyone else does. This sort fluffy explanation just for the sake of having words, is riddles throughout the book. I found myself using online dictionaries such as wikipedia for definitions.

    2)Incomplete instructions.
Following the instructions exactly won't necessarily construct a Lessons model. On lesson 2 I spent nearly 8 hours trying to figure out how to use the Create Defining Dimention tool. Only when I was able to grab a colleague, did I figure out that I needed to use the middle mouse button to release the dimension. A simple mistake which is exacerbated by the lack of description of how to use the tool in the book.

Many instructions in this book leave out very simple steps like a middle mouse button click, or the use of a tool or button that can create hours of problem solving and experimentation.

    3) No explanation of Errors. Or problem Solving help.
Often, out-of-order commands in Pro-E will result in errors which are very difficult to problem-solve. Because of some of the incomplete instructions in this book, it can be very difficult to figure out what when wrong or how to fix it. It seems that if simple explanations on how Pro-E works, or how it gathers information were explained, that these mistakes could be avoided by learning users. Or even if warnings of some common errors that occur and how to fix them would be extremely helpful.

    Conclusion:
Most other modeling and CAD programs like Alias MAYA, Ashlar-Vellum, and Solid works use different systems or have better documentation. A book guiding users through Pro-E really should be more expansive than what is found in Louis Lamit's book. A new comprehensive revision is seriously needed before a book like this can be used to learn Pro Engineer independently. However, for an assisted guide, this book is currently the best among a large crowd of bad books on Pro-E instruction.

When looking to learn Pro-E be ready to purchase more instruction, or spend time searching the Internet for help than this book can provide.

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad buy, software is sheer torture.......2006-07-11

I bought this book with the intent of studying and learning. But..it wouldn't activate. After some help from PTC and resetting the URL to the right version it loaded, including the license activation. OOPS! the CDs are outdated, program shuts down. (No help whatsoever from PTC with this issue, they're clueless). Getting hold of the author, 2 new CDs are sent out immediately (But I did pay for the postage). The CDs are loaded, ProEngineer starts up, but can't download ANY of the files that the books uses for lessons because the new student version is inhibited. While the book gives good instructions, the rest is just pure incompetence. This course will teach you to really hate ProE before you even start to learn it, and frankly compared to Solidworks and Inventor Version 8, this is some seriously outdated software with weird file structures that tells me I'm running a mad mix of old software and patches to make it look "new". Just awful. I might get it working but I've been struggling with it for some 10 days now. I feel like I've been ripped off and if I don't get it working soon I want my money back from Amazon.com

    1 out of 5 stars Software doesn't work.......2006-06-21

Software doesnt work and PTC is not taking responsibilty for this. Without the software this book is worth $20. I am absolutely disgusted with what I got after paying $95.

I AM A CONTRACT MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER, AND HAVE BEEN FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS. THE PROBLEM WITH CONTRACTING IS THAT EVERYONE WANTS YOU TO KNOW THE NEWEST SOFTWARE, BUT WHERE DO YOU LEARN IT? INEXPENSIVELY THAT IS. LOUIS GARY LAMITS WILDFIRE BOOK IS THE ANSWER. I SPENT A COUPLE OF WEEKS LAST SUMMER DOING THE TUTORIALS, THEN LOOKING FOR A JOB, AND FINALLY GETTING ONE ON WILDFIRE. WHEN I STARTED WORKING I HAD NO PROBLEM MODELING AND DETAILING. IN FACT I PROBABLY KNEW A LOT MORE COMMANDS THAN SOME PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN USING WILDFIRE FOR A WHILE.
HE ALSO HAS A WEBSITE WWW.CAD-RESOURCES.COM THAT HAS SHEETMETAL AND SURFACE TUTORIALS, THAT CAN BE DOWNLOADED FREE!!!
IF YOUR A PRO/E USER WHO WANTS TO LEARN WILDFIRE, OR NEW TO PRO/E THEN BUY THIS BOOK.
P.S. THE 'PRO/E WILDFIRE TRYOUT' SOFTWARE WILL ONLY RUN FOR 60 DAYS, BUT YOU CAN GET A NEW DISK SENT TO YOU FOR $2.00 (SEE WEBSITE), OR YOU CAN JUST TURN BACK THE DATE ON YOUR COMPUTER TO KEEP IT RUNNING. -TOMMY C-

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive Pro/E Wildfire book; worth every penny!.......2003-11-18

Concise and well presented with a strong approach on appropriate parametric modeling techniques that are not usually covered in other books. This is with out a doubt the best-written introduction book on Pro/E I have ever seen. It is also quite good as an upgrade book. Lamits propensity for writing textbooks throughout the years truly comes out in this new version. I could not ask for a better manual to instruct my students with. Not only does it cover parametric modeling with a step-by-step approach were one learned technique builds on another, but it also covers assembles and detailing as well. It comprehensively covers the new WildFire interface and includes a free CD with a 60 to 120 day Tryout Edition that contains Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/MECHANICA. What a deal...If you find a better book I will eat this one!

    Book Description

This tutorial was created to introduce new users to Pro/ENGINEER® and has been updated for Wildfire 3.0. This release of Pro/ENGINEER continues the major revisions to the software started with the first Wildfire release, particularly in the user interface which continues to become more Windows®-like and easier to use. The tutorial covers the major concepts and frequently used commands required to advance from a novice to an intermediate user level. Major topics include part and assembly creation, and creation of engineering drawings. The major functions that make Pro/E a parametric solid modeler are illustrated.

Although the commands are presented in a click-by-click manner, an effort has been made, in addition to showing/illustrating the command usage, to explain why certain commands are being used and the relation of feature selection and construction to the overall part design philosophy. Moreover, since error recovery is an important skill, considerable time is spent exploring the created models (in fact, intentionally inducing some errors), so that users will become comfortable with the "debugging" phase of model creation.

The lessons in this tutorial are meant to be covered sequentially. Discussion of commands is, for the most part, restricted to their use within the context of the lesson. For this reason, many options to commands are not dealt with in detail all in the same place in the text, as is done in the on-line reference material.

The multimedia CD-ROM produced by Jack Zecher at IUPU-Indianapolis is included with the goal of providing users with multi-modal learning tools and experiences. The CD should help significantly in getting "up the learning curve." The CD follows the text very closely, and although it intentionally does not go into all the detail contained in the text, it provides an excellent overview of the material in each lesson. We expect that many users will find it advantageous to go through the CD presentation for each lesson prior to working through the lesson in detail.

    OVERVIEW OF THE LESSONS:

Lesson 1 - User Interface, View Controls and Model Structure

How to start Pro/E; representation of Pro/E command syntax; command flow in Pro/E; special mouse functions; Pro/E windows; controls for managing the view and display of objects; the model tree; how parts and assemblies are structured.

    Lesson 2 - Creating a Simple Object (Part I)

Creating a simple part using sketched features; datum curves; Sketcher and Intent Manager are introduced; sketching constraints, alignments, and procedures; feature database functions are introduced; part templates.

Lesson 3 - Creating a Simple Object (Part II)

Placed features (hole, chamfer, round) are added to the block created in Lesson #2; listing and naming features; modifying dimensions; adding relations to control part geometry; more Sketcher tools; implementing design intent.

Lesson 4 - More Features for Creating Parts

A new part is modeled using a number of different feature creation commands and options: both sides protrusions, an axisymmetric (revolved) protrusion, a cut, rounds, and chamfer. More Sketcher tools. Edge sets. Mirrored features. Model analysis tools. We will intentionally make some modeling errors to see how Pro/E responds.

    Lesson 5 - Modeling Utilities, Parent/Child Relations, and the 3 R's

These utilities are used to investigate and edit your model: changing references, change feature shapes, changing the order of feature regeneration, changing feature attributes, and so on. Suppressing and resuming features. If your model becomes even moderately complex, you will need to know how to do this!

Lesson 6 - Sketcher Tools and Datum Planes

More tools in Sketcher are introduced, including sketching relations. The mysteries of datum planes and make datums are revealed! What are they, how are they created? How are they used to implement design intent?

Lesson 7 - Patterns and Copies

Creating a counterbored hole and hole notes. Patterns (one-dimensional or two-dimensional); radial patterns of placed and sketched features. Pattern groups. Copies using translation, rotation, or mirroring.

Lesson 8 - Creating an Engineering Drawing

This lesson will introduce you to the process of making dimensioned engineering drawings. Two new parts are created (both parts will also be used in Lesson #9 on assemblies). Much of the work in creating the drawing is done by Pro/E, although a fair amount of manual labor must go into improving the cosmetics of the drawings.

    Lesson 9 - Assembly Fundamentals

This lesson will show you how to create an assembly from previously created parts. This involves creating placement constraints that specify how the parts are to fit together. Assigning appearances (colors).

    Lesson 10 - Assembly Operations

This lesson will show you how to make modifications to the assembly created in Lesson #9. This includes changing part dimensions, adding assembly features, suppressing and resuming components, creating exploded views, and creating an assembly drawing. Display styles.

Lesson 11 - Sweeps and Blends

These are the most complicated (i.e. flexible and powerful) features covered in these lessons. They are both types of solid protrusions, but can also be used to create cuts and slots.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Roger W. Toogood, Ph.D., P.E. is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Dept. at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Dr. Toogood's research activities in robotics include symbolic generation of equations of motion of rigid and/or flexible link manipulators mounted on fixed or moving bases, development of a natural language interface to a robot controller, kinematics and path planning for automatic obstacle avoidance; and graphical animation and real time control for teleoperation. The dynamic analysis capability has been used to simulate the dynamics and control of a very large flexible manipulator mounted on a moving vehicle traversing rough terrain.

A second area of interest is the application of computer-based tools in mechanical engineering. This has resulted in some expertise in computer graphics and a specific research project in the application of artificial intelligence and expert system technology to mechanical design. Applying AI techniques to the early, conceptual phase of mechanical design, explore diverse design alternatives, without limitations due to either reconceived notions or lack of experience of the human designer, can have the most beneficial effect on the design process.

Just what I was looking for. Great tutorial for any Pro/E newbie

2 out of 5 stars weighing tickoo and toogood.......2005-08-24

i have both beginner books tickoo's and toogood's

sure tickoo's book is more expensive than toogood's but it's worth every penny.
Put it this way. toogood just brushes through every subject and tells you to "experiment, play, etc". sure i would experiment, but its' frustrating when you dont know your way around (beginner). i dont have time to spend hours "exploring" either.
tickoo spoon-feeds you everything, and can be used easily as a reference guide in case you forget something. try doing that with toogood. you have to dig through his unnecesarily philosophical language. it gets even worse since the book is not arranged step-by-step like a self-teaching book should be.

sure toogood might be a pro at using proe, but knowing is one thing and teaching is another. tickoo has 1/4 of a century teaching experience under his belt (or so i read)

dont cheapen out on this one guys/gals.

2 out of 5 stars go for sham tickoo.......2005-03-09

This book is ok for starters. Just about ok.
It omits (intentional) a whole bunch of features. Toogood barely touches drafting (pro/detail)(omits BOM tables, balloons, some important assembly features - they are available in advanced tutorial). This book leaves a lot to be desired. Only the basic - very basic proengineer tools are discussed in this book. If you really want your money's worth, go for sham tickoo's proengineer wildfire for designers. In tickoo's book, you get a fair knowledge. He discusses good number of menus and options. It is easy to refer back in case of any questions because of the organization of the book. Hope this review is useful.

1 out of 5 stars Problems, Problems and more Problems.......2004-10-20

Problems, Problems and more Problems. This is the way I would describe the book. This is my view, and I am expressing it as a practicing design engineer.

Errors in this book are too numerous to name and address and far from acceptable as an Engineer. Is Roger an Engineer or a very poor English major.

You will require lots of patience's and time, one cannot effectively get through this book without reference to the companion CD. The quality of the CD is very poor!!

I believe most new users of Pro-Engineer reliant on this tutorial is up the river with out a paddle. The author wrote this book in hopes that you understand and know Pro/E and or assumed that either the reader has previous exposure to an earlier version of Pro-Engineer. The search goes on for a good basic book on Pro/E.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good book to learn ,but you get free 60-day tryout edition.......2005-09-09

This book is not good for anyone. It has very few practice excerises and it skips lot of necessary steps which you have to figure it out by trail and error method.I found it very bugging .You get a 60 day trail version ,but the catch is it's a student version and has less capability than a commercial one.
According to me it's waste of money and time.Even though you get a CD-ROM ,I recommed to browse other books on market that has free trail version than buying this book just for the software.

    2 out of 5 stars BEWARE - Not A Good Tutorial.......2005-03-09

I was reading these reviews less than 2 months ago preparing for a graduate school class in which Pro-E was used, I never used Pro-E before (just AutoCAD). I ignored the one bad rating on this tutorial and bought it. What a mistake!!! This book will only give you headaches. The topics are very specific, it starts with a given part and makes some specific changes (which may be good for advanced work, NOT for a beginner). NO sections on just basic operations like sketches or making basic lines/curves. Many examples skip steps and you have to guess your way through. No explanations of core functions, like constrains (a function not familar to an AutoCAD user). LOOK FOR ANOTHER TUTORIAL!! Or just use the "Free" Pro-E help which I am now doing and it works quite well.

4 out of 5 stars A very good ProE text !!.......2004-10-12

I am currently teaching ProE using this book as the main text. It has been written for learning ProE from a beginning level. It starts off with a chapter (Lesson) containing eight models that most students can complete in a few hours. Like running downhill, this really builds confidence and zeal in students.
The book has a good mix of solid modeling examples as well as some assembly and drawing content, all contained in a compact, economical 400 page book. I highly recommend this book for the beginning student and anyone wanting to jump start their experience into the WildFire arena.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for appropriate techniques of parametric modeling.......2004-10-12

The consistency and accuracy that Mr. Lamit maintains throughout all of his Pro/E books, going all the way back to Pro/E 18, has been of great assistance to teaching newcomers as well as folks needing to upgrade their skills to the newest revision in all of my classes over the years. With the free 60-day tryout CD of Pro/E that comes with the book and the supplementary documentation on his cad-resources.com page, it is truly a great bargain for anyone wishing to delve into the complex world of Pro/E. Many of my students comment about how much more concise his books are compared to other CAD books that they have used. Each lesson builds nicely from one chapter to the next and covers a vast amount of territory for a book of this size. Others don't even come close and I can only hope that he will continue to write these fine books for many years to come otherwise I am sure I will have great difficulty in finding any comparable book that conveying the appropriate techniques for parametric modeling.

2 out of 5 stars Too little Too late.......2004-09-18

First, I am very surprise that Amazon allows authors to rate their own books. I was not surprised to see that Lamit gave himself five stars for a two star book. Give me a break.

My company is presently using Pro/E Wildfire 2.0. I have experience with Pro/E Wildfire. The engineering department will be switching to SolidWorks 2005 in the next year. I am concern with this move. I think Pro/E is a better product. A colleague purchased this book and I had some time to review it. I am very glad that I did not waste my money on it.

My colleague took the risk after reading a worthless review by the author and bought it. We are both trained Mechanical Engineers with over 5 years experience each with Pro/E.

The book itself is aimed at people with no previous knowledge of the software and little engineering experience. One thing that I did not like is that the author would go on explaining examples in words, "lots of them" and lacked some, "no many" key illustrations in the tutorials. A new user would be lost. An experience user would just be frustrated. Just like Roger T., too wordy and long winded. PS: I bought Roger's book and it was worst. Yes, it is for the Advance user, but it is riddle with mistakes. Is Roger an Advance user? Believe this one! Just say it, show it and do it. And make sure that it is correct. The illustrations that were used are poor. Less words, additional illustrations and better quality, and less mistakes would have been helpful. To use this book, you better have previous experience with Pro/E and extensive drafting and design knowledge. The author automatically assumes that you have certain knowledge, even with all of his words.

    Product Description

This book is written for first-time FEA users (in general) and MECHANICA users (in particular). After a brief introduction to finite element modeling, the tutorial introduces the major concepts behind the use of Pro/MECHANICA to perform Finite Element Analysis of parts. These include: modes of operation, element types, design studies (analysis, sensitivity studies, organization), and the major steps for setting up a model (materials, loads, constraints, analysis type), studying convergence of the solution, and viewing the results. Both 2D and 3D problems are treated. The tutorial uses a click-by-click format to show the command sequence exactly as performed by the user for a wide variety of models and design studies.

    4 out of 5 stars If It Were Possible, I'd Give It 4 - 1/2 Stars!.......2007-02-15

This is a very good introductory text on using Pro-E with the optional Mechanica structural and thermal (conduction) analysis package. The author, Toogood, begins with a light overview of the finite element theory (non-mathematical) and ties in the Mechanica application. He illustrates how to use the various types of analyses available in the FEA package by walking the reader through setting up a problem (pre-processing), activating the mesher and solver, and viewing the results (post-processing). The written procedures in the book are, for the most part, detailed, complete, and accurate. Mechanical, fluidic pressure, and thermal loadings are discussed and utilized. Optimization and modal analysis (determination of natural frequencies of a body) are also demonstrated. Typically, two (2) or three (3) problems are posed, pre-processed, and post-processed in some detail within each chapter. At the end of the chapter are review questions followed by a couple of problems for the reader to work on his own.

In general, this book does an excellent job of teaching the techniques of using the Mechanica application in a number of different problem scenarios. However not being a complete novice to FEA, I am unsure whether someone totally new to the field could get a sufficient understanding of the FEA background theory and limitations from this text alone. In other words, a reader might come away with the skills to setup and run an analysis, but not really understand the reasoning behind the application, the proper selection of pre-processor inputs, and finally the results. To this point, Toogood references the works of Paul Kurowski (among others) for a better understanding of the FEA technique. For those interested, Kurowski now has a book entitled, Finite Element Design for Engineers (ISBN: 0-7680-1140-X), which I found to be a useful companion to this text. If that is not enough, Toogood is available and relatively prompt and generous with assistance (through e-mail) for students with questions.

For those wondering how much modeling skill is required, the answer is not extensive. However, a basic familiarity with Pro-E is needed. Although they are mostly simple models, the reader is required to develop all models used in problems from scratch w/o much assistance from the author (though models can be downloaded from a website, according to the author). Since this book discusses only the integrated mode of operation of Mechanica w/ Pro-E, importing models made with applications other than Pro-E is not addressed and may lead to difficulties, especially for the novice user.

If I were to suggest improvements to this author they would be few, but would include providing answers to questions posed in the worked examples and at the end of chapters. In addition, it would be nice to be able to review his procedures and solutions for the reader problems at the end of the chapter (perhaps at a website). Inexplicably, the author does not include an index in the book either. This makes it tough to quickly review an individual subject or item later on. An advanced chapter or book on Mechanica would be a welcome addition.

The integrated mode of operation allows for rapid switching and similar GUI's between the solid modeler and FEA application. Nevertheless, there are a couple of gotcha's worth mentioning that plagued my work w/ Mechanica. It is relatively easy to create a solid model in Pro-E that cannot be readily or fully utilized by Mechanica. The optimization routine can fall victim to this problem. Without sufficient thought about what and how you will accomplish a task in Mechanica, some time saving techniques used in the sketching mode of Pro-E may not translate well into Mechanica either, making it impossible to select certain entities in the pre-processor. Idealizations used in certain cases won't work with this type of problem.

Finally, the user will want to double check all settings and selections in the pre-processing segment. If there is the slightest error in setting the boundary conditions (loads, constraints, and etc.), the results produced will probably not be correct for the real problem being modeled, i.e. the old "garbage in, garbage out" scenario. Always critically look at the output from the analysis. Does it make physical sense? If possible, compare some significant value from the post-processing to a quick, independent analytical check. It pays to be careful and cautious before accepting the results of any numerical analysis.

    1 out of 5 stars Book: A Big Mistake.......2005-12-03

I purchased this book to enhance my knowledge of Pro/E. I have been using Pro/E for over 6 years. Purchasing this book was a big mistake and a waste of my time. This book is very second-rate. The instructions and procedures in each chapter are not clear, correct nor complete. The quality of the illustrations are poor. It looks like the book was produced on a copier machine.

Toogood assumes that the reader knows everything. If this was true, why would anyone buy a book to read and learn from. This book was a big mistake. It now holds my coffee in the morning.

    1 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Tutorial.......2005-07-20

I've used many different CAD systems for over twenty years. And, now I'm learning Pro E. This book is very disappointing for several reasons. First of all, the instructions for each example are not complete and very difficult to follow. And, there are very few pictures of the command menus. Worst of all, the parameters of each command are not well explained as to how they relate to each part example. And, it has no Index. So, it is difficult to use as a reference. I've decided not to continue using this book and to look for something else that is less frustrating to use. If any of you know a really good Pro E tutorial, please let me know...

    3 out of 5 stars A good book but...............2005-03-09

After completing this book you would have developed a fair amount of working knowledge. But the exercises given in this book leave you irritated by the time you reach its assembly. Too many errors. The drawings provided for components are at the best misleading (not all). You start assembling and you wonder why they are not constraining properly - that's coz u got the dimensioning wrong. At first I started documenting errors. But midway just gave up as it's an unending saga. While practicing the tutorials, if you skip through paragraphs, you would definitely miss something or the other. So you have to read each and every line with utmost attention. To be fair, if you have time, this is a good book.... but again it could be much better.

4 out of 5 stars Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire for Designers by Sham Tickoo .......2004-12-18

This book is definitely helpful (would you believe essential) in learning Pro/engineer Wildfire. It achieves a good balance between reference material and tutorial examples (as compared to Lamit's books which are mostly tutorial with CadTrain screen prints and step by step instructions, but with a good index).

Explaining any major software package really requires two books. This book is a good first book and it also covers some of the more advanced 3D modeling topics that you would expect in a second book. The examples of dimensioning and annotating 2D drawings are simplistic educational ones and not of the level used in industrial design drawings going to a machine shop to be fabricated.

The index is inexcusably incomplete. Key words like: note, layer, view, orientation, hide, shading and colors are missing from it. I find the topics that should be indexed by going to the most likely chapter and looking at every page for them. As hokey as that sounds it actually works fairly well. The help files with Pro/Engineer fill in most of the pieces that are missing from this book and they have an excellent search engine.

In the creating cross sectional views tutorial on page 10-24, I found one frustrating mistake in instruction step 11, which should read, "Choose the create 2 point lines from the sketch view pulldown sketch menu and draw the lines ..."

The bottom line is that this book will definitely assist you in learning Pro/Engineer Wildfire. Although count on the many hours of struggle and frustration that are required to learn any major software tool. I don't think any book or approach will ever change that.

    4 out of 5 stars Terrible index.......2004-04-07

Terrible index and wordy. Good tutorial, but not good as a reference book.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but verbose.......2004-03-10

The book is good, both for an experienced user migrating to Wildfire and a newbie. The author teaches the software on a step by step basis, followed by a thorough tutorial at the end of the chapters. The tutorials are useful, might as well skip the preceding sections and jump right at these to learn the software.

The book has one downside though, the author is very verbose, indicating even in the last chapter to "Click the right mouse button...", the book could've easily been 75 to 100 pages shorter.

The chapter on Surface Modeling is available for download from the publisher's website and it measures up to the rest of the book.

Overall, a good buy if you are new to Pro/E Wildfire.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Book...I liked it.......2003-12-19

Once I began this extraordinary book, I could not put it down. "Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire for Designers" is so much more than a gripping learning textbook. With his impeccable research, the author introduces us to aspects of designing. I, for one, had never known existed...or even thought about. I found myself, unwillingly, leaving the book, and time and time again, going online to view his website- only to find a new world of tips and techniques opening up for me. What a trip! What a read!

The book, take us through Feature creation commands, editing commands and far back to even sketching. We learn about the secrets of design intent.

The writing is excellent. Just learn it from first chapter to last and enjoy the world of product designing using Pro/E!

    5 out of 5 stars Learn Pro/E Wildfire efficiently.......2003-12-19

I am using Pro/ENGINEER since release 2000i and when I got Wildfire I thought I will learn it myself. But after playing with it for some time, I realized that I need some text to refer to. Then I got hold of this book. It is one of the best books available that someone can use to learn Wildfire. This book describes the solid modeling tools in Wildfire in detail with a lot of images and the language used is easily understandable. While working on engineering projects, I find this book very handy and I can refer to the explanation for modeling tools that are generally needed for most of the mechanical engineering projects.

In addition to the explanation to the modeling tools, there are tutorials in the book with step-by-step explanation. A number of tips and notes are given in this book that helped me in increasing my efficiency. By using this book I not only learned to use Wildfire but also learned to use it efficiently. The Detailing and Drafting portion of Wildfire is also explained with lot of details, making it easy for me to generate various types of drawing views of assemblies and solid models.

The chapter on surface modeling that is available for free download also seems to be good with 2 tutorials although I have not started learning them. But seeing the images they seem to be good.

3 out of 5 stars too wordy, repeated instructions.......2007-01-08

Overall, the book is ok... but it's too "wordy"... Things that can explain in one sentence take the whole paragraph. The instructions on how to create new file and setting working directory are repeated like 10 times. You will be able to learn basic feathers of Pro/E with this book if you're willing to spend the time.

Although diagrams and figures are provides, most of them are the finish product (maybe without finalize dimensions), which doesn't really help much. Although the book is like 800 pages, the contents would fit perfectly into something like a 300 pages book if the author spend time integrating the methods. For example, instead of spend 30 pages on sketching and another 30 pg on extruding and revolving, he can probably combine both into 20 pages without any compromise on the reader side.

Even though I've been holding off from writing the review because I want to resell the book.... but.... who cares

Tis is the follow on the wildcat and follows Dean's attempts to put a stop to the rustleing ad to deal with her case of the hots for Jake who dumped her for a carrer as a lawman. The mistery continues in the next book. The sex is welll written and while the plot is weak its Ok and woith giving a better than average rating to the book.

5 out of 5 stars Do you love westerns?.......2004-09-29

I just love westerns and this one didn't disappoint. The love scenes were HOT, HOT, HOT!!! I loved the heroine she wasn't winey or annoying, she was very independent and self-assured. The hero was a nice alpha male and the heroine really made him work to earn her trust again. **sigh** It was a very believable relationship. I was a little surprised at the ending. I don't think I'm giving anything away, there is a cattle-rustling mystery that does not get solved and continues on into the next book. So of course I have to get the next one. I also recommend anything by Sarah McCarty too. She writes great westerns and has great alpha cowboys.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent erotic western romance ..........2004-08-21

Great characters, great love story, and fantastic alpha male. I love everything written by this author and this story was no exception. The next in the series (available as an e-book) was also wonderful. I think Ms. McCray has a way with the westerns--the characters are pleasing and the dialogue seems very genuine. GREAT HOT love scenes and and dark brooding alpha male make this story a keeper for me.

4 out of 5 stars Saddle up, partner! (Corny, I know.).......2004-07-24

This is the first Western romantica I've ever read, and Wildfire is one of the yummiest, sexiest, most erotic romances out there. The thing that I like the most is that it is set in rural Arizona with a backdrop of country life. Dean "Dee" MacLeod has had a great deal of horses and other life stock stolen from her ranch, and no one in town appears to know what's going on. But things get even more complicated in Dee's life when ex-boyfriend Jake Reynolds decides to help out with the case. He'd left her ten years ago and her heart is still broken. Her plan is to make the ultimate seduction that will show him what he's missed out on all these years, but Jake has other ideas in mind...

Cheyenne McCray's descriptions are insatiable beyond compare. I couldn't help but turn the pages until I was done with this gem. I had loved Book 1 of The Seraphine Chronicles, and now McCray has outdone herself with this first installment of the Wild series. The one thing I didn't like is that she left a rather big cliffhanger -- the reader doesn't get to find out who the rustler is. I guess I'll have to read the other books and find out, not that I wasn't going to anyway! I highly recommend this delicious romantica. Ellora's Cave and Ms. McCray have done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Those Cowboys!!!.......2004-03-17

Wildfire is the first in Cheyenne McCray's Wild series. If you love alpha cowboys this is the book for you, be warned though this is an erotic romance so has graphic sex scenes. Dee Macloud is running her ranch by herself, her ranch hands call her the "Ice Queen" which couldn't be further from the truth. Ten years ago Jake Reynolds left Dee in the middle of their hot love affair without a second thought, or so Dee thinks, but Jake has never forgotten Dee and is back in Arizona looking to take up where he left off. This is a very sexy read and you will not be dissapointed. Ms McCray is an author who is on my must buy list simply because i know she will deliver in her books and i know i haven't wasted my time or money.
