An excellent guide for pruning everything in the garden. Diagrams are clear and easy to follow. After looking at more that 20 books on pruning, Pruning Made Easy was my choice and I am very satisfied.

I like this book so much - this is the third copy I have purchased this year! (I keep giving my copy away to family members who desperately need it.) The black line drawings are what keep bring me back to this one book for all of our pruning needs. We have berry bushes (some wild and some we planted ourselves), flowering shrubs, fruit trees, a bonzi tree, a dogwood, grape vines, 3 old Oaks trees and 2 young Walnut trees. This ONE BOOK has helped us to care for each of them according to their needs and age. It has helped turn my brown thumb into green.

If you're looking for a good basic book on pruning this is it. I purchased the Ortho book on Pruning and it was a terribe. I went to the library and rented several books on pruning and this was by far the best.

3 out of 5 stars O.K.......2004-12-15

I was somewhat disappointed when this book came. I was expecting a detailed description on pruning individual types of trees. For example, I wanted a book that I could look crepe myrtle up in the index go to that page and have a detailed description on how and when to prune. Crepe Myrtle is not even in the index. I am going to buy the Southern Living Gardening book now.

Provides lots of interesting gardening information if you are planting only trees and shrubs. Book does not detail anything for vegetable gardeners. Title should be changed to include the word "Forestry" rather than the broad term 'gardening".

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful handbook.......2005-02-07

This is a great reference for those gardening in shade. It is organized in a logical format and can be easily used. The photos are nice and the information helpful as plants are considered for a shade garden. While it may not be adequate for those gardening in the deep south, it is very well suited to zones 5,6, and 7.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2002-06-22

This wonderful little book (thick, but only 4.27" wide) is an absolute necessity for anyone who wishes to do some gardening in a shady area. In fact, this book is really three books rolled into one. The first section looks at shade and shade gardening, it is straightforward and highly informative. The second section is entitled The Color Plates, and gives a long list of shade-loving plants, including a very nice color picture, and a highly informative description. The third section goes hand-in-hand with the second, and gives more in-depth information.

This book is really great, a must have for those of us who wish to do some gardening in a shady area. I highly recommend this book to all gardeners!

5 out of 5 stars Great idea book with pictures of shade lovers.......2001-03-22

The Taylor's Guides are very reliable sources for gardening information and great pictures, and the Shade Gardening Guide is one of the best. Shade gardening is difficult for many reasons. There are not that many very showy flowers for seasons other than Spring, and there are many types of shade. The descriptions are very specific and helpful: light shade, dappled shade, "the more shade, the less moisture is needed," and so on. The soil and shade descriptions for each plant are excellent and detailed.

Although the plants are listed alphabetically for the cultural requirements, the pictures are listed by groups: trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, summer bulbs, ground covers, vines, grasses, and ferns. I would recommend that people using the book for plant selection read the "Encyclopedia of Plants" part as well as the brief but good descriptions with the color pictures.

Keep in mind too that the flowering times are primarily for New England (zone 5). Furthur South you may get earlier and more flowers. For example, Ceratostigma is listed as an Autumn bloomer, while in PA, it blooms from July through October. So you get more than the book suggests. Not bad. Anyone with shade should experiment with the plants in this book. As a gardening professional, I see so many great and underused plants listed and described in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good resource for Southern gardeners.......2000-09-09

Having recently purchased a condo in Houston with a north-facing porch, I eagerly awaited delivery of this book. However, I was quickly disappointed. This book should be titled "Shade Gardening in the North," since virtually all of the plants listed are for Zones 5 and lower...not much help for my Zone 9 garden. It did contain a couple of pages of information for shade gardening in the South (which they consider to be North Carolina!), but I was really looking for specific information on the types of shade plants I could plant here. This would have been a great book if I lived in Ohio, but not so good for us Texans.

Woodland plants add magic to any garden, with lush carpets of color, foliage at the middle level, and majestic height. Contrary to myth, large spaces and special soil are not required. Drawing on her own experience running a thriving woodland nursery, the author provides seasoned advice on the unique challenges of woodland gardening, including managing light levels, choosing the right plant for the right place, and achieving the well-balanced soil structure that is often key to growing a variety of woodland plants. Extensive planting suggestions will endow gardeners at all levels of experience with the confidence to experiment, and the extensive plant directory will inspire all gardeners to bring woodland plants into the garden for year-round pleasure.

2 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2007-09-30

This book gives an introduction to gardening with woodland plants. I can recommend it for gardeners who want to initiate on this.
I have many years of gardening with woodland plants and found the book of little use.

2 out of 5 stars Drawbacks.......2007-09-22

After examining a library copy, I decided not to purchase this title. In addition to the drawbacks noted by another reviewer (British emphasis and sparse photographs), the book lacks zone information and a common name index.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Design Ideas Combined with Plant Profiles and Photographs: Check with Your Nursery for Local Versions That Winter Well.......2007-08-01

If you live in Somerset, England, this book will be an irreplaceable guide to improving your woodland . . . or creating one from scratch. Ms. Junker is from Somerset, and her perspective is heavily dependent on those growing conditions. If you live someplace that's much colder, you'll need to check on the plants that interest you to see if they survive the winters in your area. To help with that, Ms. Junker provides a list of places where you can see woodland plants in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as nurseries that have display gardens to demonstrate woodland plant concepts. The gardens and nurseries may not be right next door, but I'm sure you'll enjoy the trip.

The book opens with Ms. Junker's concepts for a woodland garden, taking it from the perspective of not having a tree canopy through to already having one. She favors thinking of your woodland garden in three layers: the canopy of tall trees, intermediate plants (like rhododendrons), and flowering plants that will do well on the woodland floor (especially bulbs and ferns). She talks helpfully about how to deal with spaces of all sizes and degrees of being wooded.

I found the book very helpful since our property is heavily wooded with many intermediate layer flowering plants. But we haven't done much with the ground layer, so the book's ideas were intriguing to me. In addition, she drew my attention to ornamental tall and intermediate trees and plants that could provide some interesting variety in our woodland.

To me, the photographs helped the most. I could identify flowering plants by name that I've seen do well in our area. Combined with her information, I have the basis for many interesting experiments.

The book's main drawback is that plant directory (the bulk of the book) is not as fully illustrated as I would have liked. I suspect that the solution is to look up the formal botanical names on the Internet to find photographs that illustrate what's being described.

Ms. Junker has obviously forgotten more about woodland gardens than I'll ever know. It's great to be able to draw on her experience and ideas.

Nice work, Ms. Junker!

    2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-02-03

This is the sort of regional gardening book that might have been marketed in 1965. The information is very basic, poorly explained, poorly illustrated, and dated. I doubt if the book was good for much when it was first published in the late 80's, but now with the revolution in Southern gardening carried on by the likes of J. C. Raulston, Tony Avent, William Welch and a host of others, the book seems stale and joyless.

2 out of 5 stars Gardening in the South With Don Hastings : Trees, Shrubs and.......2001-09-04

I was very disappointed with this book. It carries almost no usable data, just vague language. It seems that Mr. Hastings used this book as a tax right off to travel to England and other countries for research. I do not care of the lush lawn of England, nor do I care of the beauty of an oasis in the Middle East. I especially do care to read phrases, as "there is no perfect grass for the South, just make do with what you have". I rated this book 2 stars due solely to the pictures. If you were looking for a book that offers real usable data, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars The first book I turn to........1998-04-02

When I moved here several years ago I was new to the South and to gardening. My husband bought me this book and it has been my constant companion. It is the first book I turn to when I need a tree or shrub for an area, and Mr. Hastings is always the final determinant of whether the choice I made was a good one. I've landscaped two properties, and the book seems to grow with me as I need it.

5 out of 5 stars Live down South? Got a yard? Better buy this book!.......1996-08-31

Don Hastings is a true plantsman of the South. Every gardener in the region knows the Hastings name due to the huge mail-order seed business the family owned for generations. And of course, down South family name is everything! Hastings shares the wealth in his Gardening in the South series. I've read many gardening books. The difference here is that, first, it is written for my part of the country. Others are often written with a Northeast focus that just doesn't apply to our heat and humidity. Second, Hastings is not shy about expressing a definitive opinion. If your new house has a silver maple, "Prune it at the ground with a chainsaw," Don advises. There are other writers you can read twice and still not be sure if they're for it or agin it. Live down South? Got a yard? Better buy this book

      Book Description

The American elm, elegant and highly adaptable, was an essential feature of America's cultural landscape for more than a century, forming great verdant parasols above—and giving its name to—streets all across the nation. The elm became a defining element in the spatial design of America's villages, towns, and cities, first in New England, and—with the westward transit of Yankee culture—eventually throughout the United States. This fascinating and generously illustrated book traces the elm's transformation from a fast-growing weed into a regional and national icon, and shows how Elm Street satisfied America's quest for a pastoral urbanism imagined since the time of Jefferson.

      Book Description

Beloved author Sheila Williams beautifully captures the bittersweet humor and vivid adventures of women who survive the worst life can toss at them—and fight back to claim their right to be free, to be themselves, and to live in . . .

The courage to change doesn’t come easy. When Opal Sullivan walks out on an abusive husband after fifteen years, she has only her dreams in her pocket. Her new beginning starts in Appalachian River country, where she sees a bit of herself in a graceful but dilapidated house. Like Opal, the house is worn-out and somewhat beaten up, but it still stands proudly and deserves a second chance.

So Opal opens her doors—and her heart—to a parade of unforgettable characters. There’s sassy Bette Smith with her cantaloupe-colored hair and four-inch heels; short-tempered Gloria and her devilish son, Troy; the mysterious Dana, who dresses in black and keeps exclusively nocturnal hours; a dog named “Bear” who is afraid of his own shadow; and Jack, who doesn’t mind hanging out with an OBBWA (old black broad with an attitude). It is Jack who helps Opal understand a funny thing about life: You can’t move forward if you keep looking back. . . .

      5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-08-12

I really liked this story. The characters were well developed. I was routing for the heroine in this story. I loved the way she turned her life around and opened her home to other abused woman. I love the way that with the help of people around her that she came to understand that everyone new what was going on in her life and that altough she tried to hide the bruises, everyone knew that she was an abused woman. I loved the way that her relationship developed with the male charatcer that volunteered his time at the shelter because his sister was in an abusive relationship. In addition, the supporting characters were great. I loved the real estate agent. She was fun. Along with the mysterious woman that rented out the garage apartment. The child in this story, boy did he deserve a spanking but he had redeeming qualities as well. I liked the fact that his mother was able to get on with her life and get a really nice job as a land scaper. The sad side of this story was the young girl that tried to support her abusive boyfriend and paid for it in the end with being brutally beat up by him. This was a great story that I highly recommend.

      4 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-12-18

I really liked this book, but I didn't think it was as good as Dancing on the edge of the Roof. I wish she gone into more detail of the emotions battered women face when they leave their abusive husbands. The author could have expanded more on Gloria's, Opal's boarder, struggle between rebuilding her life and her guilt for not going back to her son's father. I think Opal's husband would have been more realistic if he hadn't always been so hostile. Often abusive husbands try to woo back their wives once they've left, Opal's husband does not attemtpt to do that. Also, I would have liked Imani to have been a little angry with her mother not leaving sooner. Overall I thought the book tried very hard and did a good job of explaining the complexities of leaving an abusive relationship. I think Ms. Williams made it clear that leaving an abusive relationship involves more than just physically picking up and leaving. I like that in both of Ms. Williams books her lead characters are middle aged women who are just discovering themselves. Ms. Williams really seems to be able to write about women who are on the edge in gripping, beautiful language.

      5 out of 5 stars Can't keep her down.......2004-05-20

This is a touching story about a woman who finally finds strength to walk away from an unhealthy marriage. Women from all walks of life are sure to enjoy this one because if you haven't been there, you at least know of someone who has.

4 out of 5 stars Getting Your Identity Back.......2004-01-22

Sheila Williams has come back at us with, The Shade of My Own Tree. Domestic abuse is something that not every woman or man has a chance to walk away from. If they are lucky to do so, starting over may not be as easy as they envisioned. Will they be able to make it? Be able to stay strong and not go back to the abuser? Opal Sullivan made that choice to walk away and start over before it was too late. This is her journey to reclaiming her identity.

What seems to be a trend in William's stories, you meet a rainbow of characters. From the eccentric Bette Smith, the adventurous vampire slaying Troy, the moving rag mat dog Bear, to the mysterious woman in black living in the coach house. One big step for Opal, after leaving her husband, Ted, was finding a place of her own. That came in an old Victorian by the river, that looked as if it had seen better days. Like Opal, the house and its occupants, were on a road of discoveries and second chances. Opal rediscovers her passion for painting, and love where she least expected.

There were times when the story lulled, but Ms. Williams has a way with words that keeps you tugging on. This is a great story of people learning to lean on each other and ask for the help that they thought they would never receive. Thus reclaiming themselves.

5 out of 5 stars The Tree of Life.......2004-01-06

Sheila Williams' second offering of a down on her luck woman packs the same punch as her first offering, Dancing On the Edge of the Roof. The Shade of My Own Tree introduces Opal Sullivan, a mentally and physically battered divorcee trying to decide what to do with her life. Williams expertly takes us back in time to relive Opal's life as a young mother and wife forced to sever ties with her extended family.

After purchasing a dilapidated house in Appalachia, Opal puts in motion the necessary renovations to take in female boarders temporarily. While the core of the novel highlights Opal's strengths coupled with the reservations of putting her dreams in motion, Williams showcases some very zany characters that add much-needed humor to Opal's situation. These characters allow Opal to offer a helping hand in their lives while Opal gets a glimpse of the person she once was. What better person to help a battered woman than a former battered woman.

With witty dialogue, a helping hand from Opal and from the boarders and other new friends, Sheila Williams offers hope for everyday women with a renewed energy.

          Book Description

The definitive guide to a popular hardy perennial.

The growing popularity of hostas can be credited to their colorful beauty, longevity and ability to grow successfully just about anywhere. Hosta foliage comes in astonishing variations. From blue, green, yellow to multicolored, the leaves appear in all manner of shape, size and texture.

Their growing season stretches from early spring to late fall. The plant's flower ranges in color from white to pale lavenders and blue-purples. For gardeners in colder climates, the best part is that hostas flourish to Zone 3 -- virtually all of continental United States as well as populated areas of Canada and Alaska.

Hostas introduces modern, busy gardeners to the charms of this beautifully diverse plant. After a brief section on the fascinating history of hostas, the book covers growing the various cultivars in fine detail.

          Topics include:

Illustrated with color photographs throughout, Hostas is a valuable resource for modern, creative gardeners.

Excelent book for the average gardener. This book concentrates on using Hosta's in the garden with other plants. 3 out of 5 stars Pleasurable reading .......2005-07-24

It was a pleasure to read this book and worthwhile. However I am a person looking for more of a book that doesn't put it all on the line. She states in the book on pg. 27 that she does not like to write about pest and diseases however she does imparts some useful information for the novice hosta grower, but not nearly enough for an enthusiast. This is a good little book for the half hearted gardener. This is certainly not a book to hold as any type of real reference material.

          5 out of 5 stars Hostas inspires.......2004-09-17

'Hostas' by Rosemary Barrett is well written, thoroughly researched and a pleasure to read. The photographs are first-rate and will inspire anyone who is landscaping in the shade. The reference sections of the book seems very thorough - although I am no expert! This is a book that can truly be judged by its cover: well designed, well-produced and beautifully presented.
