The material I belive was written with sincerity. I personally had hard time relating to the information about alliens, giants, dragons talking to the writer. Otherwise the book can be engaging but a bit to me personally it vibrates on the science fiction frequency.

If you were to travel to the Amazon, say, or the source of the Nile, you would likely find the people there wearing corporate logo-branded T-shirts and listening to the latest pop hits on the radio. Using a GPS device or satellite photos, you can track your location just about anywhere on the face of the planet. Given globalism and the ease of travel to once-remote places, where is a would-be flag-planting adventurer to go these days?

The answer, writes Michael Ray Taylor in this intriguing book, is inward: inside the earth by way of the millions of caves that pierce its surface. Following an international team of fellow cavers--men and women in peak physical form and apparently without fear--his narrative takes us deep within the ice caves of Greenland; a vast underground labyrinth of rivers and chambers in Mexico's Yucatan; a cave on a cliff wall overlooking the Colorado River near the Grand Canyon, one that no human had ever before entered; and other great caverns of North America. High-quality (and sometimes astounding) full-color images accompany the text, offering views that usher us into a world of blind snakes, bats, strange geological formations, and uncanny sights that few surface-dwellers have been privileged to see.

Caving is not merely adventure for its own sake, Taylor notes. "Over the past decade," he observes, "scientists have been surprised to learn that in the deepest recesses of the Earth are repositories of exotic microbes ... far more varied in types of species and their individual strategies for survival than all the plants of an equatorial rain forest." Some of these microbes, he suggests, may deliver chemicals for fighting disease; they also deliver important evidence about the history of life on the planet.

But, all that said, caving offers plenty of thrills, and Taylor's book does a superb job of capturing both the science and the adventure of a journey to the center of the earth. --Gregory McNamee

CAVES: EXPLORING HIDDEN REALMS by Michael Ray Taylor (0792279042, $35.00) provides some outstanding cave shots from caving experiences around the world. The book accompanies a new film 'Journey Into Amazing Caves' which was released in March 2001: many of the hundred-plus photos are from the film and highlight places no large-format camera has gone before.

5 out of 5 stars How would you like to explore the mysteries of caves?.......2004-04-25

Many of us have probably been very fascinated with caves since we were small children. However, we probably never had the actual experience of exploring caves nor will we ever undertake such a voyage to many of our planet's uncharted regions.

Perhaps, the wisest and safest way to satisfy our curiosity pertaining to the study of caves, or as it is called, Speleology, is to seek out a good reference text. National Geographic Society's coffee-table book entitled CAVES: EXPLORING HIDDEN REALMS, authored by Michael Ray Taylor, would certainly meet the criteria as being one of the most outstanding introductions to the mysteries of the underground.

The tome is the companion text to the McGillivray Freeman Imax film by the same title.
Taylor separates the book into three distinct sections, ice, water and earth in order that we have a general understanding as to where caves are to be located as well as their respective formations. As the author states: "the skin of the world hides many caves. All are profoundly shaped by, and profoundly affect, the nature of the land overhead. Caves are to a surface landscape as veins and capillaries are to a human face-the hidden structure of an inseparable whole."

The ice section introduces us to the caves of the heartland of Greenland where glossy photos provide us with fantastic visual entertainment that convey to us the beauty of these caves as well as the danger constantly prevalent within. Moreover, we are also clued in to the many animal creatures found within these subterranean enclaves such as the tardigrade. It is to be noted that the study of life in caves is known as biospeleology.

Our adventure moves onto to some of the caves discovered beneath the Yucatan or the section dealing with water. One only has to stare at the introductory photos to this chapter and we can appreciate the utterances of the cavers when they assert: "we are amid the wildest scenery we had yet found in Yucatan; and, besides the deep and exciting interest of the ruins themselves, we had around us what we wanted at all other places, the magnificence of nature."

The final stop on our journey delivers us to the caves of the earth where we explore the deepest one in the United States, Lechuguilla located in New Mexico. We also venture into the caves of Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia or as they are termed the TAG region. The spectacular photo of the Lechuguilla certainly reaffirms the statement that "a picture is worth a thousand words."

Enhancing the usefulness of the book are the many articles pertaining to the study of caves that have been contributed by several well-known experts. These short essays also include those of the author, Michael Ray Taylor, who has explored more than 600 caves in expeditions that have taken him around the world.

Bon voyage on your next expedition into the world of caves where all you will need is a good chair and Michael Ray Taylor's brilliant book.

5 out of 5 stars Where in the world to cave.......2003-07-04

I am always left breatheless at the majestic beauty of every cave I am blessed to enter. This book gives wonderful descriptions of caves and the pictures in this coffeesque style book are the icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to caving.......2002-12-12

This book is very well written with lovingly detailed chapters devoted to the many splendid cave networks dotted around the world. There's a great section on the flora and fauna of the underworld, as well. I went potholing in Kak Canyon once, and saw a couple of chutney ferrets, all thanks to this book. Incredible creatures - and I wouldn't have known they were there until I read this.

5 out of 5 stars Super cave explorers.......2002-02-14

I really liked this book. It has good pictures for people who want to be a cave explorer. It tells you a good description of the caves these people explored. I really liked the fact that they explored ice, water and earth caves. I think students that are studying caves would really like this book

Book Description

South of the Clouds offers a fascinating, intimate portrait of China by telling the story of an American man who ventures into its hidden realms---romance, politics, the criminal underworld, and Tibet. As he matures from a wide-eyed student into a journalist and a seasoned observer, he develops a passion for uncovering secrets, about China and about himself. The author navigates his way past forbidding walls to peek inside the dark corners of Chinese society, relying on a remarkable collection of friends and acquaintances who help guide the way: an embittered policeman in Xian, a gay professor in Shanghai, and a Buddhist monk in Tibet, who presides at an ancient burial ritual where the corpse is carved up and fed to wild vultures. The Tiananmen Square massacre, people smuggling, and the Falun Gong movement are among the political and social upheavals that the author explains as he witnesses China's uncertain road toward capitalism and its place in the modern world.Along the way, the author wrestles with his own cultural identity, his sexuality, and his spiritual bearings. He finds an erotic outlet in the Chinese "Sauna Massage" and a stirring emotional connection with Jin Xing, a brilliant choreographer and China's first openly transsexual citizen. Ultimately, he discovers the answer to lifelong questions on a mountaintop in Tibet. Seth Faison, with a subtle understanding of Chinese culture, brings past and present events to life in a thought-provoking account of this mysterious nation and its people.

5 out of 5 stars re-read this on a trip through china.......2006-10-14

I recently re-read Seth Faison's marvellous book on a return trip through China. I was in Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai and then Hong Kong all in the space of a week. Faison's book was like a becalmed harbor that I could return to -- every time I got on a plane or settled down to bed. His crackling prose and incisive view of China and the gentleness with which he explained what is a tangled and complex place were something I looked forward to each day. It's a great book and deserves the widest possible attention.

4 out of 5 stars hidden schmidden.......2006-08-19

I'm sure that with technology, there are no secrets. I give it four stars instead of three stars because people who take issue with his contradictions will want to read this. Break out the highlighter pens. I laughed when he acknowledges for the first time (and then frequently throughout the book) that Chinese women are fodder because I've heard the lengthy and boring explanations by those who refuse to admit that about themselves. Use a different color to highlight the many times he feels that Chinese have developed an "obsession for money" and that Chinese women use him to get magazines, currency exchange and see him as marriage material while they cannot afford his expat coffee or sundae. (The kinds of things he was asked for, many people would have no problem giving without the burden of the economic and racial differences between the giver and the receiver. Obtaining magazines are a big deal FOR EXPATS in China. There have been some socially retarded incidents of too much asking but I think the Chinese are better at showing when that's been inappropriate of Chinese so I think he could have been clearer about that.)

Then use a third color highlighter for the many times that he is reliant on the generosity not just material but the generosity of Chinese attention that helps him acclimate and get his job done. People and perhaps especially Chinese fail to draw the comparison that the percentage of Chinese immigrants who enjoy that thorough a level of generosity overseas is much less than the percentage of nonChinese who are helped by Chinese in China. I bear him no rancor though I can't imagine he would appreciate this review. I haven't laughed so much READING in a while. The pungent motives and unspoken assessments are not a shock and I think he's very clever and remembers that many Chinese know this so he presents them for consumption. It's his admissions that save him just as when Kip Fulbeck's narrator admitted that he wouldn't want his daughter dating someone like him. LOL. I wonder if M. Faison (French Huguenot! LOL) has ever been frustrated that Chinese don't realize how clever he is. This book is not about "dating." It's about world politics and its instruments. And his cleverness is not in his confessions of eliciting confidences but in the entire book.

A good companion to this book is Thailand Fever written from both Western and Thai perspectives (as interpreted by a Westerner apparently) with tips on how to successfully navigate the cultural misunderstandings to forge successful romantic relationships. The tone of Thailand Fever is different because the goal for the Westerner is different. I don't think that the authors of either books speak for all Westerners although Thailand Fever tends to generalize. Some expats may welcome South of the Clouds and refer to it to reinforce their criticisms; however, this book fails to explain that Asians and notably the Chinese are very good at ignoring other people and becoming invisible when they are not being appreciated or well-regarded sincerely so there is something to be said when they help you.

I'm fed up with the lack of Asian male faces in American media while Asian women are left exposed and devalued so that this kind of reporting is part of the mainstream depiction instead of just a blip. I'm calling quits on going to the movies and closely considering every American media purchase I make (including magazines) from now on. I've had it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Journey! .......2005-12-30

Wow... I just started reading this book two days ago and I'm completely engrossed... wished i had started reading it on a weekend, in order to read it faster!!!
Having been in China just a couple of months ago, I wish I had read this before my trip. Seth Faison provides lots of information about China society, culture, history and politics without sounding too judgemental. This is one book I'm sure I'll come back to. Essential reading for these times!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-20

Faison brings us closer to the people of China and gives us an honest view of himself and how his own personal uncertainties influenced his choice of going to China and his life there. He dates a woman, who like China, has deep secrets, and he dates another who's personal choices help him understand himself. He visits the sauna massage to have a human touch and someone to talk with.

I like this sort of armchair "travel" book because it skips the tourist sites, hotel/restaurant reviews and encyclopediac history in favor of narratives about the people and the times. You will not read about the Great Wall nor Summer Palace here, and the Xian soldiers are only here because they are part of a story about real, everyday people.

These narratives are rich and memorable: the emmigrants and their familes of Fujian, a bootlegger, a sadly compromised government guide in Tibet, the slow build up to and the ensuing confusion of Tienamen Square. The sky burial, haunts me now, a day after finishing the book.

5 out of 5 stars A great read to better understand the hidden realm of the Middle Kingdom.......2005-12-14

I've spent over 8 years in Asia with much of it in China and have always enjoyed reading books about China. Many though, do not come close to capturing the modern thoughts of China as it changes from an agricultural to industrial power as this book does.

If you are looking for a deeper understanding of how many Chinese feel on the street, with threads of intrigue, history and current events I heartily recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Opening volume in an unusual fantasy quintet .......2006-12-10

This is one of the two opening volumes in a group of five books. Sharon Green initially started with the intention of writing two individual novels, of which this was one, but the tale grew in the writing into an unusual double trilogy.

Green herself described it in the afterword to the final book as an "odd series" organised into "two crossed trilogies in the form of an X."

The first trilogy tells the story of the sorceress Chalaine and the sorcerer-prince Bariden. This trilogy starts with "The Hidden Realms", shares the middle book "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams" with the first trilogy, and is concluded in the final book of the quintet, the appropriately named "Game's End.

However, another part of the same broader canvass is the story of Princess Alexia and the mercenary captain Tiran d'Iste, both of whom are shapeshifters. Their adventure, which includes both a romance and a quest for a kingdom, starts with "Silver Princess, Golden Knight," and continues as the two stories come together in "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams", which is the middle book of both trilogies. The story of Alexia and Tiran is sort-of concluded in the fourth book in the quintet, "Wind Whispers, Shadow Shouts". The double titles denote this second trilogy.

The linkages between the two stories are clearest in the middle book, where all four characters work together, and at the conclusion of "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams" each of the two couples become the rightful King and Queen of their own Kingdom. In the final two books, each couple has to defend their newly-gained realm and its' people against attack by powerful evil from beyond the worlds.

If you are going to read this series, it helps to read each trilogy in order and to read "Game's End" last. Hence the sequence is

1) and 2) "The Hidden Realms" & "Silver Princess, Golden Knight"
(Either can be read first)

3) "Dark Mirror, Dark Dreams"

4) "Wind Whispers, Shadow Shouts"

5) "Game's End"

This quintet of fantasy novels, written between 1993 and 1996, is rather more mainstream than some of the author's earlier works. Sharon Green has put a lot of effort into creating the personalities and magic powers of the heroes and heroines, and some of the other major characters. The plots - in both senses of the word - are also quite intricate.

Rather less effort appears to have been put into creating the worlds where the stories take place, the minor characters or most of the villains, who tend to be fairly two-dimensional and thinly sketched out - to such an extent that many of the places in the stories and many of the characters do not even have names. In places there is good use of humour but there could be rather more.

Overall as fantasy novels go this is average, by which I do not mean to damn the book with faint praise. It's not the best fantasy story you will ever come accross, but it's not the worst either.

The main thing going for this series is that it is such an unusual way to build a story as to make it interesting to see how Sharon Green put it together.

4 out of 5 stars Realms of Oooh Lah lah.......2001-10-27

Have you read a book in your youth, and it has been in your mind since then. This book is the only one I can remember for so long. I remember the author's name, the title, the characters... This book is definitely a must-read for fantasy lovers both young and old, probably better for the young adults. The book is so great because it mixes two of my favorite genres together, fantasy and romance. It can get a bit creepy and confusing, but don't pass it! read, read, read!

5 out of 5 stars An interesting series.......1999-11-30

Hidden Realms, Silver Princess Golden Knight, Dark Dreams Dark Mirror, Wind Whispers and Shadow Shouts, and Game's End all take place in the same world with two sets of main characters who interact. Each book, however, focuses on only one couple.

Hidden Realms introduces you to Chalaine and Bariden. Silver Princess Golden Knight introduces you to Alex and Tiran. Dark Dreams Dark Mirror brings these couples together. Wind Whispers Shadow Shouts continues the story with Alex and Tiran. Game's End then end the story, focusing on Chalaine and Bariden.

I like these books so much more than Sharon Green's other novels simply because the couples actually get along. There none of the "I love you, but I can't admit it and won't be happy if we *are* together." The problems that arises from the couples are not the declaration of their love for each other, but rather how to cope with outside forces trying to separate you and your own self doubts.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and funniest fantasy books I've ever read........1998-06-26

This is the first of Sharon Green's books that I have ever read and I've been addicted ever since. I really like this book because it is a fast paced fantasy adventure with a touch of humour and mystery. All the ingredients for a really good read. The interaction between all the characters particularly the two main ones, Prince Barian and Charlaine, make this book a delight to read.

and his assistant, Avalina, who discover some ancient artifacts, which leads them to the secrets of interdimensional space travel, and the ability to travel to these realms. I did not complete this novel, since I felt that it had to be completely
rewritten with more characters and richer detail.

I then began a new novel called Singer's Star, based off of the Singer's Hall myth in the Wartburg Castle, in Eisenach Germany and the Sir Gewain and the Green Knight myths, which is also listed after the Avalon novel, which was my attempt to introduce more characters, and a richer plot structure than the Avalon novel had, and which also updates some older Germanic myths themes, by placing the themes in an outer space setting in
a high tech age similar to the Star Wars series, instead of placing the myths on Earth in the mythical ages of Earth`s past.

The basic plot of the Singer's Star novel, begins with a space ship full of Wandering Minstral's, who are traveling to an annual Singer's Competition held at a hidden space station inside of dark star. Before they get to the space station, they must travel through some uncharted regions of space, filled with pirates, strange creatures, and unknown challenges. Once they arrive at the space station, the Singer's competition
is held at the Singer's Hall, and during the competition, the tales sung, come to life, due to the strange nature of the dark star, wherein the Singer`s Hall is located, and where what is sung in the dark star, becomes reality, and opens a doorway to the imagined lands of the tale and song. In the midst of the songs and tales sung at the competition, a heroic figure from one of the tales sung, similar to the Green Knight, in Sir Gewain and the Green Knight, comes to life, and enters
the Singer's Hall at the space station, and challenges, the minstrals in the hall to a quest that leads through the doorways to the imaginary realms of the Green Knight's tale as sung by one of the minstrals. While on their quest, the Minstrals travel through many strange dimensional, and otherworldly
doorways, and lands, that all come to life through the imagination of the Minstral's tales themselves, and their own actions, while experiencing the realities of the lands of their own imagination and ancestral myth`s.

Again I have not completed this novel yet, and do not intend to, since I expect to be to busy with other matters, to allow me to complete the novel in a satisfactory manner.

I hope you enjoy these novels.

        Respectfully,

        Baron Von Volsung,

        Book Description

Nearly every ancient culture has legends of ancient visitors who came from the stars. These visitors brought knowledge, advances in technology, and sometimes chaos to the primitive inhabitants of earth. The best preserved of these legends are embedded in South American lore and in sacred wisdom passed from generation to generation in Native American traditions. The Hopi tribe, for example, has a detailed and complex mythology involving what appear to be aliens. The Hopi also have specific prophecies involving a return of these visitors.

"Visitors From Hidden Realms" details many of these ancient South American and Native American legends and compares them to modern reports of UFO sightings, strange appearances of unusual people bearing important messages, and alien abductions. Author Brent Raynes, who has investigated UFO reports since 1967, presents a multitude of previously unpublished UFO cases and abductions and shows how these seem to be directly related to the visitations reported by modern shamen. Raynes also presents the thoughts of some of the most important thinkers in the field of ufology and reaches remarkable—and surprising—conclusions about the visitors.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I read it because of the forward by Brad Steiger.......2005-05-23

This book is a mix. He interweaves indian history and myth with UFo's and other mysterious events. The book was at times, not my cup of tea. I sometimes found it boring, and certainly long. But at other portions of the book were some real diamonds and nuggets of information presented in a way with surprising potential.

This book is wothwhile because it introduced me to the UFO and alien contact expeiences induced by dimethyltryptamine.

You will find discriptions of such things as the "Blue Xendra Arch" of Alagoas, Brail.

This is a book with potential. If you are interested in indian lore, then you should consider this book to be a 4 or 5 star book. I found the Indian lore boring, thus my lower rating. It is a good book. It has it's plusses and it's minusus.
