A Cavern of Black Ice opens J.V. Jones's Sword of Shadows trilogy. (Her first novel was The Baker's Boy.) The story is set in a land divided among small warring clans of hunters and more sophisticated southern cities whose lords covet the clan territories.
Young clansman Raif has a touch of "old blood" magic that guides his arrows to the heart. Bad times come when a hunting party that includes his father and clan chief is wiped out by a supernaturally aided attack, and Raif's open suspicion of the brutal new leader eventually drives him into exile. Meanwhile, Iss, overlord of Spire Vanis city, keeps a chained-up sorcerer whose powers he channels by revolting means, and has unexplained but shuddersome plans for his "foster daughter" Ash--herself an unwilling focus of dread forces. Raif and Ash find themselves fleeing together through wintry, hostile clanlands, pursued by Iss's vilest henchmen, seeking the dubious goal of the Cavern of Black Ice.
What lifts this tale far above routine quest fantasy is Jones's deft characterization, relentless intensity, and unsparing depiction of pain and slow-healing injury. She has a flair for memorably horrid images. Here a sorcerer gloats over one of his nastier tricks: "A man could not fight when his corneas were snapped from his eyes like badges from a chest."
This hefty volume is over 800 pages long, but the narrative grips hard once it's gained momentum, and the pages turn increasingly fast. Strong meat. Next comes book two, A Fortress of Grey Ice. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Download Description
It is said in the Known Lands that when one prophecy dies in its fulfilling, somewhere another moves into place. When Jack, the baker's boy, successfully fulfills the prophecy that centered around his birth, a new prophecy arises to the north, where lie other lands, harsher places, populated by people just as intriguing and complex as those we met in the Book of Words trilogy. Two young residents of the northern territories--Raif Sevrance, member of the Clan Blackhail, and Ash March, a girl who is suddenly overtaken by powerful dreams--find themselves first drawn together, then swept up in a series of events that will bring their peoples into a vast war. Dark magic, great bravery, treachery, danger and heroism join in a three-book series that brings to a new level the writing talents of J. V. Jones.
Book Description
"Wonderful . . . J.V. Jones is a striking writer." So says Robert Jordan, the author of The Wheel of Time epic fantasy series. And Jones lives up to that praise in the highly charged epic adventure of Ash March and Raif Sevrance, two outcasts whose fates are entwined by fate and by need, in the cold, dark world that threatens to be torn asunder by a war to end all wars. They are but two of many who fight the dreaded Endlords, but both Ash and Raif are special in unique ways that isolate them, yet which also enable them to perform heroic acts that might save their world.
Raif, wrongly accused and cut off from his clan by the treachery of their new headsman, has a talent for killing that is part of his curse and his burden. But he bears another burden of greater weight. Ash is a sacred warrior to the Sull, an ancient race whose numbers have declined.Raised as a foundling, she never knew her true heritage, she must learn to accept the terrible gifts of her heritage.
But as Ash learns more of her greater fate, Raif's task looms dark and desperate, for he must journey through the nightmare realm of the Want, a place where even the Sull now fear to tread. For deep within the Want is the Fortress of Grey Ice, and there he must heal the breach in the Blindwall that already threatens the world. Should he fail, not even Ash's powers can save them...
Customer Reviews:
I really enjoyed this book.......2007-06-12
I enjoy fantasy books. Allot have underdeveloped and totally unreal characters. This one is not like that at all. I picked up this book at Wal-mart on clearance sale. I thought I might get through a chapter or two. I couldn't put it down.
So Much Potential Wasted in this Frustrating Book.......2007-05-14
A Fortress of Grey Ice had great potential. The author definately has a knack for developing characters who are interesting and complex and putting them in a compelling world.
But the potential is lost because the book is so weakly plotted, so poorly written and so tedious.
First off, as others have mentioned, there is too much narrative and too little dialogue. In the second half of the book I found myself skimming along reading the rare dialogue between characters and the first sentence of narrative paragraphs. In other words I was interested in the characters but bored by the tedious exposition.
Secondly, there are eight or ten main characters and, for the whole length of the book, with the exception of Angus Lok who flits from here to there, they have nothing to do with each other. The entire novel could have been broken down into ten short stories each telling the tale of a single character.
Third, the author has hopelessly screwed up the character of Raif. Perhaps she just can't get into the mindset of a young man but Raif, as written, is a muddle. I never for one moment believed that he would choose to go live with the maimed men. I think it was just a plot device to get him to the rift. Meanwhile he gives no thought to the Uncle who befriended him and saved him. Why doesn't he go look for his uncle? Because it would not suit the plot, that's why.
And we are supposed to believe that he would take part on a raid on his old clan and kill clansmen when, at the same time, he still holds clan honor so high that he won't speak a single word against clan, even to save himself? It makes zero sense. He would run first. Or kill himself. Anything before that.
Also, in the first book, it was made very clear that Raif has the gift of heart killing living things. But it was also made very clear that he was an average target bowman. Now, suddenly, even injured and out of practice, he can out-shoot the best bowman in the known universe? Why? Because it makes a dramatic scene? How? The Gods helped? Fate?
In the end the author creates compelling characters. But she doesn't let them talk. She doesn't let them interact. And she makes them act in ways that are radically out of character in order to further the "plot". It all adds up to 2 stars but it could have been a lot more.
Still going strong.......2006-06-30
Although I do agree with other reviewers that the second installment in the "Sword of Shadows" series did not benefit from the high level of narration and pacing that made the first book so addictive, it was still a very engaging novel, and she's quickly becoming one of the better Fantasy acts out there nowadays. The novel still focuses primarily on Raif and Ash, and the relationship that we all know them to be developing, but it's the accessory characters and the landscapes that truly elevate this novel. With characters like Vaylo Bludd, Marafice Eye, Mace Blackhail, Angus Lok, Drey, Effie, and Robbie Doone, J.V. Jones has truly populated her world with well written and believable people, and with few exceptions, she avoids the wretched fantasy stereotypes of the "too good" or "too evil" character.
Much like the first novel, the description of the landscape is stark and breathtaking, and provides the second great strength of the novel. Even though this wasn't as pleasing as the first installment, Ms. Jones has laid the foundation for a heck of a series, and I can't wait to see where she's going next with the story. For the most part, it's a great combo of drama, action, and fantasy, and if she can straighten out the narration a bit, there's no reason not to expect a 5 star effort on the 3rd installment.
Good stuff!.......2006-03-19
I like fantasy and I enjoyed this series so far. There is plenty of intrigue and magic to keep you reminded that this is not just another series and the author is not afraid to kill one of the good guys. I like the fact that she is able to track multiple cultures and settings so well.
My only irritation is that I can't seem to locate anything to finish the series. I hate having to wait this long to see what else is going to happen.
Flawed Genius?.......2005-09-22
First of all, I should state emphatically that this book (and the earlier book in this series) is excellent. Jones has a strong, detailed, highly imaginative writing style that is refreshing to read in a genre that has nearly run out of promising authors. Most other reviewers on this site have thoroughly covered all of Jones' many strengths, and it serves little purpose to rehash them.
That being said, I have noticed several problems that seem in stark contrast to her otherwise great writing. It would be unfortunate if one were to buy these books after hearing nothing but rave reviews that will not discuss her faults.
One of the more frustrating of these is the authors desire to endow her characters with almost supernatural mood-reading abilities. Personally, I have never been in a conversation with someone and read much into a "darkening of the eyes", whatever that even means. In fact, so much is conveyed in the conversations in this book "under the surface", without words, that I'm starting to doubt my own conversation skills. There's a whole world of communication that I've been missing! I want to emphasize how distracting this writing style is. There are conversations that involve more thinking and analyzing of the other's thoughts than actual speaking. Imagine a converstation like that! "Thank you for coming. We have a lot to talk about." Five minute pause while both people stare at each other, analyzing every minute facial movement and gesture. "Well, you asked me to come here. Should we start?" Five more minutes...you get the point. Its more than a little ridiculous.
A second, more glaring issue is Jones' overuse of narration. There are literally whole chapters where no action takes place and no words are spoken between characters. Perhaps if that were to happen in just one chapter, when all others moved swiftly, it would be powerful. But the author seems to feel the need to TELL us what her characters are thinking, rather than SHOWING us through actions or dialogue.
This point may be a little niggling, but I've noticed that no one ever does anything "roughly", it is always "not gently". There have actually been several times I had to re-read a sentence to understand exactly how character A grabbed character B, and what that implies, because of the author's reluctance to use a phrase that does not involve a qualified gentle action.
Finally, and this is perhaps my most serious critique of Jones' writing, is the egregious lack of judgement--or worse, lack of action--of her characters. So many of the problems in the story could be solved if people simply DID something, usually the painfully obvious thing. For instance, so many of the problems in the Blackhail clan could be solved if Raina would simply tell everyone she knew that her bastard of a husband had raped her to force her into marrying him, which was itself a rather ridiculous plot device in the first book. In another example, Raif suffered days of torture and faced imminent execution for a crime he never even committed, but refused to tell his captors of his innocence because he did not want to stain the honor of his clan--who had banished him, and had in fact committed the very crimes Raif was being accused of! Simply put, it is maddening. It reminds me of those old 80s sitcoms where the entire infuriating episode is driven along because of some ridiculous misunderstanding, and where if one character just stopped for a moment and had an open conversation with someone else, the entire problem would be solved.
Don't misunderstand me. This is very, very good book. However, these problems are so distracting that I cannot honestly say it deserves more than 3 stars. Any fan of the fantasy genre will definitely enjoy it. Think Robert Jordan mixed with George Martin. If Jones manages to avoid the "Jordan Bug" and wraps this up in another book or two, this could well be one of the best series to be published in the past 10 or 15 years.

Great Story.......2007-09-16
Elaine Cunningham does a wonderful job in this book as all the other reviewers before me have surely said. And it is a little late for me to review this book i guess you can say, but I must tell you that I have gotten a late start in reading forgotten realms novels, and I have caught up and am an avid reader of these novels as well.
Back to the reciew of Silver Shadows, this book shows the quest that Arilyn undertakes independently of Danilo Thann. If you are reading this book, you have surely read Elfsong, and that is the book that describes Danilo's quest for the harpers. Elaine is a great story teller and from first point on is able to apprehend your attention and take you through Arilyn's journey of her self and for the harpers and the elves of evermeet. In addition throughout this quest, you see the maturity of Arilyn as a person since Elfshadow.
Overall Elaine Cunningham is one of my favourite authors of the realms, and this book is one of the various Forgotten Realms books i would recommend.
Tour de force..........2007-03-26
After many boring and sometimes offensive perspectives of the Forgotten Realms, I finally come to Silver Shadows. It is one of the best fantasy tales I have ever read. Ms Cunningham has her hands on the pulse of Faerun as the story begins where her others left off. This one completely envelopes and compliments Elfsong and doesnt need to be read in sequence. The publisher like series or trilogies. This is both for marketing and in most cases, rewrites of Lord of the Rings. "There is gold in them dungeons!"
This book was the last big published effort by old TSR. A name that strikes fear and excitement in the publishing industry. Most of the time, pulp is the result. This author was the exception. While Ed Greenwood created the Forgotten Realms, he has some problems telling his stories! This is a wonderful setting with infinite possibilities. Most guest authors bring hack-saws to it. This title shines with a timeless appeal and original plot that is hard to beat.
Arilyn Moonblade was introduced in Elfshadow in 1991. Her temperment is not appealing as the story unfolds, yet her spirit makes her likeable. The adventure she undertakes is engrossing and highly imaginable. It seems to come beyond the Realms and into the very heart of the meaning of "fairy tale". Tolkien is left out of the picture, which seems to be a problem for other authors of this setting. Humor and Fun are highlights of this thrilling tale, that itself would make a great movie in the proper hands. The bad guys are loathesome and the Elves are a delight. Oh, I almost forgot a nice dragon thrown in.
Ms Cunningham has exceptional skills at creating a world that is filled with whimsy, light romance, laughter, and totally engrossing battle scenes! Now if only the rest of the authors could be this good!
A fine continuation of a noble series.......2006-11-10
Yet again Arylyn Moonblade is off to adventure, but this time at the behest of the Queen of Evermeet?! In this book we go from one suprise to yet another as Arylyn finds herself in trying times even as her associate (Danilo Thann) has his own adventure in the second book of the series. This really is a great book for anyone who loves stories involving elves and heroic selfless deeds. It is a good read and worth the money.
WELL DONE Elaine Cunningham-AGAIN!!!.......2004-06-19
Arilyn Moonblade is back! The half-elf Harper finds herself involved in another adventure in the lands of Tethyr this time, tying to save Green (Wild) elves from Zhentilar deserters.
The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself once again and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping a balance between what is suitable to young readers and what to adults! Subtle hints such as "Omnivore" Ferret/Amulet of underwater Breathing in the Mistress Penelope's Baths and Garvanell's "payment" is exactly what many of us fans out there who are now in our 30's would like to see more of-something a bit more spicy than the usual. From the moment you pick up the book you have trouble putting it down and if that is not a clear sign of a fantastic writer/author and a great plot, I don't know what is!
Elves, Zhents, assassins, Duty, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about. A great trilogy indeed with Elfsong and Elfshadow and a "must read" along with Evermeet! One should seriously start thinking about maybe turning them into movies... DON'T MISS IT!!!
Wonderfully Written... Horribly Edited.......2003-08-20
This was an amazing book. Elaine Cunningham lets readers into Arilyn's complicated mind and the strange powers of the Moonblade become more apparent and it's demands worsen upon it's half-elven bearer. I enjoyed every page of this book, the plot, characters and setting were masterfully put on paper but...
You might wonder why I only gave 4 stars when this book's plot and characters are obviously 5-star material. While Elaine did an amazing job for this book whoever edited it did not. I am no english grammar whiz but still there were obvious mistakes that should never have been printed. For example, on one page a halflings name is Sandusk and on the next it is Suldusk. Also, the land which this tale takes place in is named Tethyr, it says so in the map in the front of the book but throughout the pages it is misspelled, one sentance it is Tethyr and on the next line (really!) it's spelled Tethir. I know these are just annoyances but that's it!
I enjoyed the premise and style of this book, I love the way Elaine Cunningham writes but I was thoroughly annoyed by the editorial mistakes.
A 5 star book
A 3 star editing job
Please overlook the bad editors and read what Elaine Cunningham is saying, it's a wonderful book, please read.

Mortals should choose to read it.......2007-08-01
I confess: I do not read much. I have an amazing attention deficit that prevents me from finishing even the loftiest of classics. I finished reading this book. This fact may not seem so interesting to most, but is high praise considering the countless unfinished volumes in my office. The characters are endearing, Onweald springs vividly from the pages, and I anxiously await the unfolding of the next scenes in that world's history.
Simply cannot put this book down.......2007-07-13
I have to admit that I haven't finished th book yet, but not for lack of trying! I was explaining to a colleague why I was so tired (staying up until 2 AM, reading "just one more chapter" of "Choices Meant for Gods") and how exhilarating I am finding this book! Sandy Lender has taken great care to develop interesting characters. The book keeps you guessing. The teacher in me likes to try to predict what is coming next -- and I'm almost never right! I can't wait until Ms. Lender writes another book!
Great New Fantasy!.......2007-05-01
It's so refreshing when a novel comes along that grabs you from the outset and won't let go. Such was my experience with "Choices Meant for Gods." The characters are as real as the author can make them without literally leaping from the pages to be with the reader. Instead, the reader is drawn inexorably into Lender's new world, where even gods are "human." I hope that many more readers can have the opportunity to enjoy this marvelous work!
Great new Fantasy Realm!.......2007-04-27
Too many fantasy authors are re-hashing the same old plots, acted out by the same old tired heroes and heroines. Here we have a refreshing new take on things! I love that Chariss is both someone I can identify with and whom I can dream about becoming. . . it's what fantasy is all about!
Gods & Mortals.......2007-04-23
This book has a great deal to offer. It is good fantasy. It is good writing, period. The pace is fast, the characters well-crafted and compelling. The treatment of the gods and their interaction with mortals is original. My big complaint is that I must wait for the sequel(s) to learn the outcome.

shadow rising.......2002-02-27
this is one of the best series of books Ive read in a long time. the events happen at a pace that makes it hard to put down. I'm a commercial fisherman,Iread alot on my down time they are enchanting enough to take me away to a different world even 125 miles out in the ocean. I highly reccomend this series to all sci-fi readers. My one and only regret is that Mr.jordan cannot produce them fast enough.then again if he did they would not be as engrosing. My eyes and mind await the tenth installment of the series "the wheel of time"
Best of RJ Review.......2001-01-18
Having already read these four books and enjoyed them all, the tapes were also very good. The books were fantastic but, i could not read while i drove or did certain other tasks that required my eyes and hands now that is taken care of. I can now do just about anything and enjoy these great books. So, i do recommend reading the books but, if your a person on the go then this collection on tape is a fantastic substitute.

the sword of bedwyr.......2006-11-03
this is an exellent book that i have just finished. this book has extreme action, and a very gripping plot. I would definitly recommend this book to anyone who love or doesn't love fantasy books. I am about to start Luthrien's Gamble the 2nd of three books in this series.
the sword of bedwyr.......2006-11-03
i think this book is exellent. it had extreme action, and a gripping plot. if I reccomend any book this I one I definitly would. I my self am about to start the second Luthrien's Gamble.
Best Author To Read.......2006-08-05
To say I'm a big Salvatore fan is putting it mild. If there was only one author in the world you could read then that should be Salvatore. The Sword of Bedwyr (Crison Shadow Trilogy) is very well written and brings your imagination to life. If you liked Lord of the Rings, then you'll love any of the Salvatore books available. Once you pick up this book you'll never be able to put it down. Enjoy!
Not Bad.......2005-11-03
This book and series as a whole was a good read. I didn't find anything truly unique, but it was written well, and the story flowed nicely. If you want to read a light fantasy by a good author, I would recommend this book along with the final two Luthiens Gamble and The Dragon King.
Salvatore does it again! Great story.......2005-08-20
R.A. Salvatore explores another new world in this book the first book in the Crimson Shadow trilogy. The world is no where near as developed as his world of Corona (Demon Wars), yet at the same time the story isn't as deep and moving either so it makes sense.
Fans of Salvatore looking for another 'Drizzt' novel here will probably be disappointed. This book, and trilogy, are meant as a light fantasy read and that is exactally what you get. The story is well told and the characters are well fleshed out. I may even go so far as to say this trilogy has one of the best Salvatore characters ever made in that of Oliver, but I'll let you be the judge of that.
This book is fast paced and has enough action to keep everyone interested. There aren't as many plot twists as with Salvatore's other work, but I think that was intentional here as well.
If you are new to the fantasy genre, or are looking for something different to read from your favorite author. Give this one a chance. Be careful not to expect too much from it though. Take it at face value and you will really enjoy the ride.

A wonderful world full of loved ones........2003-06-29
Gah...the ending. I first started this series with Kingmaker's Sword back when I was about 13, and found a dusty copy in a library. I was hooked, it became my best read ever, and I swiftly bought my own copy, and others to come, and read the whole first series. When the Sword and Exile series came out, i was devasted. So many of my favorite characters were being killed of like flies, Red Kian and Kerridwen of old age. (Needless to say Kian was my favorite. *hisses at Kerri*)The series came to a stunning conclusion that left me in tears, I am sorry to have left this world.
What's the difference?.......2002-12-25
Reading all six of Ann Marston's books is like those games in magazines and newsapers "Spot the difference". All the books are alike except some minor details. It's actually quite boring reading these books when you already know exactly what happens only by reading a few chapters. And to finish: an advice to all you fantasy readers out there - Books that evoke a sort "prophecy of a hero that will defeat evil" or something like that gives away the ending already.
Good Finish to a fantastic series.......2001-09-03
The entire series maintained its quality consistently. Normally authors have the habit of getting worse as more books in the same series come in (eg: Robert Jordans wheel of time) but Ann Marston was superb from start to finish.
The plot was well planned and executed. Only I wish there could have been a slightly longer tale after they go get the swords in the island.
A Good Conclusion.......2001-07-10
As twin boys come of age and step-up to their destiny, love, adventure, magic, and loyalty step-up to them. Sword and Shadow was an incredible read! A wonderful conclusion for those who have followed the Sword in Exile Trilogy. The characters seemed real, and, as often happens, they became my friends. I shared their trials and their joys with my heart racing and my mind spinning. Often during reading, I would laugh or jump up and down and then look around and realize that I was in my own house, and not on the battlefield with my favorite heros and heroines-a good feat for an author. The reason I give this book only four stars is that, as is often characteristic of Marston, the ending left somewhat to be desired. The epilogue gives a quick explanation of the years to come, but I, of course, yearned for more. Perhaps this is simply the mark of a good writer, but I think the story would have been enhanced by added pages. A wonderful read- enjoy it!
I'm so, so terribly sorry........2001-06-17
If you have bought and read the rest of these, and you're wondering what the last ever is like, I'm so, so terribly sorry for you. Because this book is a complete cop out. Now, don't get me wrong, I love EVERYTHING I have ever read, but this *was* a cop out. She got to the end, and went, "Oh my god, the end, better finish!" and that's all I think I can say...

Book Description
The fate of a world rests on an unlikely hero. . . .
Tucked away in peaceful Shady Vale, the young half-elf Shea Ohmsford gives little thought to the outside world. Yet far to the north, the evil Warlock Lord has dispatched shadowy Skull Bearers, creatures twisted by dark sorcery, to hunt him down. At the same time, a black-cloaked giant of a man appears in Shady Vale. He claims to be the mysterious Druid known as Allanon, a wizardly wanderer of vast knowledge and power–and he has come to see Shea. For Shea, he says, is the last descendant of an ancient Elven king. Only he, in all the world, can wield the fabled Sword of Shannara. And only the Sword can stop the Warlock Lord from destroying all that lives.
The Sword lies far from Shady Vale, in the Druid castle of Paranor. And Paranor has fallen under the shadow of the Warlock Lord. Yet all is not lost. Shea will rise to the challenge. Together with Allanon and a handful of brave companions, he begins a desperate quest into the very heart of evil. . . .
The Sword of Shannara Part 1: In the Shadow of the Warlock Lord is the newest addition to the Del Rey Imagine program, which offers the best in classic fantasy and science fiction for readers 12 and up.
