Book Description

Joey O'Shay is not the real name of the narcotics agent in an unnamed city in the center of the country. But Joey O'Shay exists. The nearly three hundred drug busts he has orchestrated over more than two decades are real, too; if the drug war were a declared war, O'Shay would have a Silver Star.

With nerves and mastery worthy of his subject, Charles Bowden follows O'Shay as he sets in motion his latest conquest, a $50 million heroin deal that originates in Colombia and has federal agents sitting at attention from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., to New York City. As it unfolds, O'Shay reveals the unerring instinct and ceaseless vigilance that have led him through minefields and brought down kingpins. But now they have led him to a place where it isn't so clear who the heroes are or what the fight has been for. And still the warrior fights on, in a murky and unforgiving landscape readers will not be able to forget.

5 out of 5 stars haunting true story of u/c narcotics officer .......2006-12-27

As he did in Down by the River, Charles Bowden takes the reader deep into the shadow world that is the war on drugs. This book reads like a well crafted literary mystery novel - think Graham Greene or Scott Turow -except it's true. If you read both River and Shadow, you'll get some idea of the personal toll the drug war takes on the cops and their families, and also wonder how they can go out and fight this evil day after day and year after year. Especially since the street agents are the ones who pay the biggest price, while the "suits" play the career game. Joey O'Shea could be the model for Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice.

4 out of 5 stars It ain't a pretty world .......2006-03-29

I'm an unabashed Bowden fan -- I'd read his grocery list if he published it. This isn't his best book (that honor would lie, in my mind, with either "Blood Orchid" or "Down by the River") and he does things a little differently here, such as using more traditional storytelling devices, such as suspense. That said, I read it straight through, hanging on every word. This is a dark and depressing book -- the kind that made me question not only what kind of world we live in, but also what I even know about the world today. Throughout his entire career, Bowden has worked hard, finding characters such as Joey O'Shay, the undercover drug "warrior" in this book -- and I get the impression that he devours their insanity, insecurities and internal demons and can only try and purge that burden by writing books that the rest of us will then wonder about long after we've finished reading them. There are two main reasons to read this book: One, because it's really good. And two, because smart journalists and great writers such as Bowden are a rarity and deserve to be supported whenever they share their thoughts and experiences with the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars A Shadow in the City:Confessions of an Undercover Drug Warrior.......2005-09-20

In the beginning chapters I judged the style as a bit aloof. It does not take long, however for Charles Bowden's wordcraft and narrative style to hook you into the surreal life Joey O'Shay leads.
A Lone Efficient Wolf, down a long hall....in an office, deep inside the belly of the DEA. The Eagle Scout agents will not even walk past his door. It does ones spirit good to know they are not all twisted right wing suits.
I highly recommend this book for those who think they lead a strange life. O'Shay lives in a dimension all his own, and one largely of his own careful making.
I hope he allows us more when he retires.

5 out of 5 stars In Dubious Battle.......2005-08-03

In January of 1935, shortly before Steinbeck sent off his manuscript of "In Dubious Battle," he wrote, "But man hates something in himself. He has been able to defeat every natural obstacle but himself he cannot win over unless he kills every individual. And this self-hate which goes so closely in hand with self-love is what I wrote about. This books is brutal. I wanted to be merely a recording consciousness, judging nothing, simply putting down the thing. I think it has the thrust, almost crazy, that mobs have." What does this have to do with Bowden's latest book? Everything and nothing.
He is a poet trapped in a journalist's psyche, and this is no more evident than the opening of this book. I think the same could be said of Steinbeck who approached the world scientifically through metaphor. I would have enjoyed this, a conversation amongst Bowden, Abbey, Ricketts, Steinbeck, hell, throw in Joe Campbell.

Buy this book and learn about the animal within us all. An animal that purrs while ripping the flesh of a gazelle.

5 out of 5 stars Winning the Battles on Drugs, Not Affecting the War.......2005-07-28

One definition of insanity is that a person keeps doing the same thing over and over even after he knows that it won't work. I have met people like Joey O'Shay who have such a deep seated drive to wipe out the drug business that they almost couldn't function doing anything else. Popeye Doyle of French Connection fame was one.

I've also seen them reach the point where perhaps they have been shot a time or two, perhaps they have looked at all the drugs that the French Connection stopped from comming into the country ($32,000,000) doesn't mean that drugs are any harder to get. (In fact police tell me that the drugs on the street are of higher quality and lower price than ever before.) Then like Joey O'Shay they begin to question the futility of our never ending war on drugs. And somewhere along there Mr. O'Shay you'd better find a way to leave this life behind.

I do not profess to know the answer to the drug problem, but, Guys, this isn't working.

As you might guess, in this book Joey O'Shay is a cop on the undercover drug beat. He's being very successful, but the people he puts away are replaced immediately. He's involved with another huge drug deal. He's having a problem understanding that winning the battles he is fighting isn't winning the war.

Book Description

Acclaimed author Jen Holling presents the stunning final novel in her sensual trilogy, set against the windswept hills of Scotland, about a trio of sisters with witchcraft -- and passion -- in their blood.

Rose, the youngest of the MacDonell sisters, is more concerned with her father's mysterious illness than with her impending marriage to her childhood sweetheart. A gifted but frustrated healer, she decides to beg help from William MacKay -- a reclusive laird who is renowned not only for his ferocity, but also for his healing powers. Denied entry to his fortress in the cold, harsh mountains of the far northwestern highlands, Rose uses cunning to force her way in, and William is duly intrigued with this bold slip of a girl. But securing his help may not be enough to save Rose's father. For there is something darker at work in the glen, something more powerful than William's and Rose's magic combined, and only the soul-deep passion that shadows their mutual desire can help their love prevail.

4 out of 5 stars It was good.......2007-02-19

I am a die hard fan of romantic novels. I have all three of the series and I absolutely love them they are all really good.

5 out of 5 stars What an ending!!!.......2006-08-29

This is the third installment of The Brides of the Bloodstone trilogy. It's the story of Rose, youngest of the three MacDonell sisters. While they were little girls, their mother, a powerful witch, was burned at the stake. In fear for their lives, their father hid them separately. Now many years later, and on his deathbed from a mysterious illness, the MacDonell has summoned his daughters home.

Their lives are still in danger so he has arranged each of them to be married to men he can entrust with their safety. Rose, the youngest and blessed with the healing touch, is betrothed to Jamie MacPherson, a childhood friend she hasn't seen in years. Her wedding, however, has been postponed so she can devote herself to discovering the source of her father's illness.

Despite her many efforts, her father continues to deteriorate. To Rose's mind, her only hope is William MacKay, a gifted healer also known as the Wizard of the North. Since her many letters to him have gone unanswered, Rose decides to travel to his fortress to see him in person.

William is determined to shun the girl who has traveled many miles to see him, but curiosity forces him to disguise himself and seek her out. What he finds is a beautiful woman who is dedicated to helping others, even at risk to herself.

His fascination with her finally forces him to see her and eventually agree to travel to MacDonell castle to see her father. But in truth there is a sinister plot behind the MacDonell's illness and his wife's death and this mysterious enemy will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

This was such a great ending to a wonderful trilogy. The plot of the MacDonnell's illness and the mother's death at the stake is woven throughout all three books. It is finally resolved in this last tale but what an ending. Jen Holling has done a masterful job weaving several storylines together to create an enchanting tale of love, treachery, and greed.

4 out of 5 stars Saved the best for last.......2006-07-22

The final novel in the MacDonell Brides trilogy, this is the story about the youngest sister, Rose, a powerful witch and healer.

She was only eight when witch hunters burnt their mother alive. Sent far away from her home, she's waited for the day when she could return to Glen Laire and be with her family once again. Now her wish has finally come true, only to find out that her father is dying. For all her healing powers, nothing seems to cure whatever ails her father. Frustrated with his declining health and her inability to heal him, she writes to William MacKay - the reclusive Lord of Strathwick and a very powerful healer. But when he ignores her letters, she braves the wildness and sets off to the northern highlands ready to beg him to see her father.

William, the so-called Wizard of the North, is known for his great healing skills. But with Scotland in the grip of a nationwide witch hunt, he has been a virtual prisoner in his own home when his own clan has turned against him. When Rose appears outside his fortress, he initially denies her entry. But her persistence soon wins over, and before he could think twice, he accompanies her back to Glen Laire to try healing her father, only to discover that they are dealing with witchcraft that is beyond his powers.

MY SHADOW WARRIOR is, in my opinion, the best novel in the trilogy. It is more character-driven and we really see the attraction grow between the main characters. Rose and William are well suited, connected together by destiny and the magical powers they were born with. We see more of the characters from the first two books, as they help Rose and William uncover the person behind the witchcraft that is slowly killing their father. Some new secondary characters are also introduced, and I thought William's daughter, Deidre, was simply adorable and her own special ability adds to the fun.

While this book can stand-alone, it is better to read the other two novels to get a richer understanding of the MacDonell sisters. I must admit though that the mystery regarding the black wizard is rather obvious from the first book, however, I enjoyed the trilogy especially this book. The first two novels are MY WICKED HIGHLANDER and MY DEVILISH SCOTSMAN.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-09

Third in the series, this novel wrapped up the rest story lines left dangling in the other novels.

The romance in all three novels was excellent. All were equally entertaining. I read the entire series between Saturday and Thursday of one week, while working full-time.

My only disappointment in the whole series was that the villain was obvious from the first time he was introduced, and it took three novels of Alan suffering before the matter was FINALLY resolved.

5 out of 5 stars Holling doesn't disappoint!.......2005-10-10

I am not and never have been a romance reader, but I'll always read Hollings books. She is that good. And I have to agree with M. Rondeau: Holling saved the best for last. I didn't see how she could possibly do any better than the riveting first two books of the McDonnell series, but My Shadow Warrior is like the finale of a dazzling fireworks display. Rose is such an endearing heroine, and her dilemmas (saving her dying father, trying to escape a past of abuse at the hands of a 'foster' family) make for a heart of compassion as well as inevitable faults. Very realistic, very identifiable. And hero William McKay breaks the mold when it comes to love interests. His past is as tortured, if not more, than Rose's, and his heart is just as big. The darkness surrounding him adds tension to his and Rose's already tense and knee-weakening attraction. And readers of the first two novels will be glad to see Gillian and Isobel again as they work with Rose to get to the bottom of their father's illness. The climax you have been waiting for happens here!

    Book Description

No American military unit can claim as colorful and volatile a history as the 75th Ranger Regiment. From the French and Indian War of the 18th century when its guiding principles were first written down by Robert Rogers, to the most recent combat operations in Iraq, Rangers have led the way in America's wars for well over 300 years. Today's Army Rangers combine the rugged individualism of American frontiersmen with the finely-honed ability to operate as a close-knit team, wreaking havoc amongst enemy forces wherever they are deployed. This book portrays some of the most fearsome warriors of the most powerful army in the world.

The book has three parts: The Rise of the Rangers - Their origins through Vietnam; America's Small Wars - The modern Rangers in Iran, Grenada, Panama, Iraq and Somalia; The Global War on Terrorism - Afghanistan and Iraq. The post-Vietnam era occupies 75% of the narrative, which contains many dramatic first hand accounts of combat with fascinating supporting detail on doctrine, training, tactics and equipment. Appendices supply further information on regimental lineage, honors and citations, organization and equipment, medals awarded, regimental commanders, NCO roles and Ranger doctrine.

    From the Ranger Creed
Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other Soldier.... Never shall I fail my comrades. I will keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight; I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one hundred percent, and then some more.

From the reminiscences of the first commander of the modern 1st Battalion, 75th Regiment
'The things I remember; it'll be the Gold Medal Infantry of the world; they'll be able to do more with their hands and weapons than any other infantry unit in the world. Wherever they go they'll be recognised for their superior excellence. There will be no hooligans or bums in that organization... There will be a creed that they will develop, live by, train by, and fight by.'

    From the Military Book Club
'From the first battles fought by Robert Rogers' Rangers in the mountains and swamps of upstate New York, to fierce battles in the blistering desert towns of Iraq, Shadow Warriors takes you for a 250-year tour with the Army Rangers. And what a tour it is!

...Honor the men who lead the way with this informative illustrated history.'

5 out of 5 stars The definition of a freedom fighter.......2006-10-23

Maybe it's because I'm close to the subject but I enjoyed every single line writing in this book. This book tells the story of a person that had an early understanding of the damage that communist governments could inflict on the freedoms and human rights of individuals.

Felix's fight against communism went from being inserted inside Cuba helping to support and created armed resistance, to training and advising locals in Latin America to fight Castro communist trained and sponsored guerrillas that have brought so much pain and death into Latin America. He also fought in the jungles of Vietnam and had an essential role in the tracking down and capturing Ernesto Guevara in the Bolivian jungles.

Che seems to be a hero by many that have been only touched by Fidel's Castro propaganda machine, but for people like me that were born and lived under Castro regime, we have a first hand knowledge of how Che agreed and supported the repressive steps taking by Castro against the Cuban people to increase his grip on power.

Felix Rodriguez fit, in my opinion, to the definition of a hero. This is a book that anyone interested in cover operations should read, but particularly Cubans that have lived under Castro regime and want to know the side of their history that is impossible to find under the Castro's regime's Cuba's history books.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a joke.......2005-02-25

This book is about an individual who obviously has a lot of imagination. Unless you intend to consider this as a fantasy novel, I would strongly recommend against wasting your money on this piece of propaganda.

5 out of 5 stars He REALLY hated Castro.......2004-06-09

Rodriguez reminds us that being anti-Castro does not make him pro-Batista. He's pro-Cuba.

The son of a well-to-do doctor who escaped to Miami, Felix has spent his entire life fighting against Castro and his communists. One of the last men to see Che Guevara alive, he said he greatly regretted the man's execution and protested against it. He even relays the ironic anecdote of how a physician (Che) wound up as economics minister for Castro, and their brief but informative discussion on why the Communist rebellions in Africa failed.

He also has no love for the CIA, detailing the number of times in the Americas and South East Asia that the Agency screwed up his missions from bureaucracy or sheer stupidity, and the pathetic budget they were allowed to use. He considered them to be useful idiots in his own crusade.

Idealistic to a fault (Several faults) and yet quite shrewd, it was Rodriguez who warned LTC Oliver North that the arms coming in were being grossly overcharged for and that someone was pocketing the money. That he was ignored by North and others shows again the frustrating universe he had to operate in. And yet he persisted.

The writing drags a little here and there--this was one of Weisman's first projects, I believe. But it's not bad overall and there's plenty of content. A great counterview to the numerous bios of Che and others, and a rare examination of the very underplayed US response. The CIA didn't smash the Communist Revolution. The Revolution failed due to it's own (greater) incompetence and dishonesty. A comparison of the players on each side makes that obvious, and Felix was one of those players.

A fine addition to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book of a true hero.......2003-07-25

This is a fantastic book first of all. It tells the story of Felix Rodriguez who despite being Cuban born fought for this country's ideals and in fact became an American citizen. I won't go into the whole book, I'll leave that to anyone who reads it, although it is a great book, and you will see that Rodriguez does not deserve the things that he has been unjustly accredited with. A must read for those interested in CIA or Special Ops hiistory!

    Book Description

Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs meets Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior in this thriller that races at breakneck pace--from the critically acclaimed author who gave Stephen Coonts "a nightmare for a week."Alfie Woodard always completes a mission. The skills he learned in the Australian Special Air Service have carried over to his new life as an Aboriginal spiritual leader and contract killer for drug lord Jay Burrell. Alfie knows how to stalk and kill a victim, then disappear without a trace. But it's the ritualistic murders and the devouring of his victims during the Aboriginal ceremony that send a clear message to Burrell's enemies.Charley Payne was losing it. He had spent his life as a door kicker for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in the world's hot spots. When his friend, Police Detective Sergeant Bobby Lee Martaine realized that Charley was becoming a danger to himself and his missions, Bobby Lee offered him a job. Trading in his guns for a camera, Charley finds his new life as a forensic photographer in the Twin Cities uneventful and peaceful-just what he needed, until Charley is called in to photograph a gruesome murder scene. There are no fingerprints and only one clue, a bizarre Aboriginal painting. Most in the police department begin to suspect a serial killer is on the loose. Bobby Lee is closing in on Alfie, but Alfie learned in the SAS that a mission is not complete if you've left a trail behind. When Bobby Lee and his family turn up dead, Charley returns to the way of the gun. But he will be fighting a war on the spiritual leader's turf in the Australian outback. A fight to the death that took place in the Aboriginal dream world five centuries before.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Original and Exciting!.......2006-04-24

In "Warrior in Shadows", Charley Payne is a damaged soldier. A man tired or being a killer, but the warrior is so much a part of his soul that he cannot turn his back on it. He's ready to live his life quietly now as a Minneapolis, urban dwelling photographer. Enter Alfie Woodard; ex-Australian Special Forces, now a for-hire killer and Aboriginie Medicine man that kills not only for pay, but to increase his Spiritual powers.

Marcus Wynne has created a classic tagonist/protagonist character. In many ways Alphie and Charley are the same man that at some crucial point took different paths. Charley becomes reluctantly involved in the investigation of a series of ritualistic killings that smack of serial killer. However, Charley sees beyond what appears to be insane, into a world that few can travel. This leads to the inevitable meeting between these two Yin/Yang "brothers" in a showdown that pits Charley's hard earned, deadly skills of war and spirit against Alphie's equally deadly skills.

This is an extremely satisfying, quick read that takes place in Minneapolis and Australia.

Pick this one up, you won't be dissappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Dirty Harry Meets the WHeel of TIme.......2005-05-11

This was pretty predictable. Very bad guy does many bad things to good guys buddies and friends. The good guy hunts him down for a final show down.

So much for the plot, this was a very enjoyable romp. Marcus Wynne knows his guns and hardware so there were no .38 Glock revolvers in this book. What sets this book apart is the Aborignal mysticism that is the core of the fight between Charley and Alfie.

I also appreciate that Wynne moves the plot right along. My one complaint is that everything was very pat and tied together. Life is a bit messier than this.

Oh, one other thing it is pretty clear that Wynne likes a Glock 30. I prefer a Glock 36 for my carry piece.

Still this is a book to read and an author to track.

Bye the bye mate - Wonk! Wonk!

5 out of 5 stars Hang in these, IT's worth it!.......2005-03-16

Great book, this guy knows his hardware, and CQB tactics!

(Actually, a shade too much empahsis on the gear, but that's the genre requirement.)

The middle chapters are a tad weak on style. I got tired of everybody brewing up some gourmet coffee every other page.

(Did this guy write this on his laptop sitting in Starbucks?)
This guy keeps thing very lean, I think stylistically, those middle chapters could use a bit more meat.

But, that's piddling. This is a front to finish exciting read, and the climax, pays off EXTREMELY well.

Don't know about the woo woo stuff, but most of the tactics are real world usable.

    4 out of 5 stars Outback battles.......2004-07-11

Good action with some mystical stuff thrown in. The author knows his stuff and it shows, I await his next work.

5 out of 5 stars Wynne Strikes Again!.......2004-06-24

This was another good book by Marcus Wynne. He has turned out to be one of the most unique writers that I have read. In this
book our hero is Charley Payne. He has left his employment at the
CIA to become a forensic photographer for the Minneapolis police.
Payne is called in to photograph scene where the victim is
partially devoured.Charley also notices a painting on the wall from the Aboriginis.
The murderer is Alfie Woodard who is an Aborigini warrior who also served in the SAS.Alfie is a contract killer who works for
Jay Burrell a big drug dealer.Alfie uses his tribal practices to
strike fear in his victims.Alfie kills one of Charley Payne's friends and his family.
Charley hooks up with Kativa Patel,an expert in Laura region art. They fly together to Australia to pursue Alfie Woodard.Once
    there a battle ensues.
This is another good book fron Marcus Wynne who has come up
with another frightening villain in Alfie Woodard. In "No Other Option" Jonny Maxwell were scary as well.Buy this book and read it. It is excellent.

This is the story of a young white girl, Alys, that rescues a young indian boy and his sister by means of some secret caves under her house. In return the young boy, Moon Wolf, wows to make her his wife when they are old enough if only she'll come with him to his tribe. She declines and years later, after having spent time back east learning how to be a lady, she returns to her mum at Fort Benton, only to learn that a rogue indian called Wolf Shadow harasses the bulltrains containing goods destined for his people. One day she spots blood on the ground after such an attack and follows it....right back to the secret caves of her childhood. She finds Wolf Shadow injured and heavily bleeding but takes on the task of nursing him back to health. During this time she comes to realize that Wolf Shadow and the young boy Moon Wolf with whom she was severely smitten as a young girl, is one and the same person. They rediscover the bond between them and mutual friendship, respect and in the end love blossoms even though Wolf Shadow has woved not to take a wife for as long as he is needed to interfere with the illegal trade of whiskey to his people.

I brought this book with me on holiday and it took me only two late in the evening sittings to finish it - I just couldn't put it down. Once more Karen Kay tops herself and has delievered a true keeper.

I have never wanted to read historical romance novels. (All the flowery words are too much!) This book was not like that. I am of indian heritage and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was a book I did not want to put down. I am awaiting her next book in the series of "The Legendary Warriors." I would recommend this book to anyone that likes romance as well as adventure. I am now hooked on Karen Kay.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and pleasant to read!.......2007-04-24

This is an excellent book for both the new seeker and the battle worn spritiual warrior. I found it pleasant to read and very refreshing in its honesty and realisitic world view. Mr. Cuhulain blends his spirituality and livelhood in a way that gives credit to both his honor and understanding of both.

His ability as an author makes this book easy to read, which is one of my main complaints with many books on spirituality for seekers. LOL Its hard to learn when you have to force yourself to get to the end of the page. *blush* With this book you look forward to what is coming next. You get the sense that you are in the presence of a wise and caring friend.

Kudos to Mr. Cuhulain for providing an excellent resource to us all!

5 out of 5 stars Newbies need look no further........2005-09-29

I for one like this book. It contains everything a beginner would need and presents it in a linear-logical order. It touches on more advanced things too for those further along on their path. This is not merely a cookbook of worthless spells. I would recommend for anyone honestly wishing to start on their own daily practice.

    5 out of 5 stars Exactly How I Feel.......2005-09-19

Ker Cuhulain has documented the true essence of male Wicca. This book outlines exercises, and view points that I am sure will connect with any male wiccan who is in touch with his god half.
He makes interesting associations between the elements and the spiritual side of wicca. If you are a Wiccan male who is in touch or looking to get in touch with the inner stag, this book is for you.
If you are looking for a recepie book on ritual or spelcrafting this book is definately not for you. You are called on to connect with your inner nature and let it guide you.

5 out of 5 stars True to Wicca.......2005-08-09

An absolute book in the truth of the Wiccan Way of Life. No hocus pocus, but basic facts for self improvement. Not a book for those looking for 'magic spells.' Does repeat the lessons of The Wiccan Warrior. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Guidebook for the 'Wiccan Warrior'.......2004-01-26

Kerr Cuhulain is a Wiccan police officer, based in Vancouver; he's been in the field for the past 24 years, and a Wiccan for more than thirty. I've not read his first work, The Wiccan Warrior, so I can't compare the two, but from what I've read in this book, I like his easy style, and the general applicability of what he writes.

It's written as a guide to beginning your own Book of Shadows, to be worked through as you go along. It's broken up into five parts, one for each element (Spirit, Earth, Water, Fire, Air - the reasoning behind the order explained near the end of the book). Cuhulain gives comprehensive exlpainations behind each point he brings up, which is a refreshing change, whether I agree with them or not. It shows that he has thought carefully about what he believes and I respect that.

Cuhulain states that one cannot be Wiccan if they do not adhere to the Wiccan Rede - I'm sure this will generate mixed reactions among readers. His explaination of karma isn't terrible (pg. 38), and he does acknowledge the destrutive tendancies apparently inherent in human nature and it's purpose, noting the adage 'In order to heal you have to be able to hex' (pg. 39).

He makes apt parallels between dicplies such as martial arts and magick, manipulating ki and ritual mindset, etc. bringing his style of Wicca and neo-pagan magick in line with an inspiring warrior tradition.

There are a couple minor things that are an annoyance more than serious problems. The first, incorrectly stating that Litha occurs on the autumnal equinox (page 176). The correct date is noted as being the summer solstice in the gloassary, but those new to Wicca could easily become confused by this misrepresentation. As well, the anti-drug stance he takes toward magick and ritual is disapointing, but then again, he is a cop, so it's somewhat expected.

There were a few little things that impressed well upon me, such as Cuhulain's use of CE/BCE to refer to dates rather than the Christian date system, which is often paradoxically found in some Wiccan and neo-pagan texts. As well as his uses he or she throughout the book. I love that it has footnotes, and attributes quotes and information correctly. Small things, but they make a difference.

Though this is written as a guidebook for the 'Wiccan Warrior', many concepts and ideas presented within are applicable to magickians of any style. Overall, it's an excellent start for any novice.

Just about everyone has heard of Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, and Napoleon, three historical figures who, for better or worse, radically changed the world. But what about William Walker, Fred Ward, and John Singleton Mosby? They didn't live centuries ago and what they did also changed the world we live in. And each of them faced almost unbelievable odds...and won. Here are just a few covered in the book.
    - William Walker recruited a handful of barflies in San Francisco and not only conquered a country but frustrated the plans of the world's greatest empire.
    - And John Singleton Mosby, a Confederate private, carved "Mosby's Confederacy" out of what is now suburban Washington and prolonged the Civil War at least six months.
    - In World War I, Paul von Lettow Vorbeck, the German commander in East Africa, showed the world that black soldiers could fight as well as Caucasians.

Enthusiastically recommended for any personal, academic, or community library Military Studies/Military History collection, Soldiers In The Shadows: Unknown Warriors Who Changed The Course Of History by military historian William Weir is a compilation of true stories about ten soldiers whose brave and intelligent actions helped shape history around the world, yet whose deeds on the field of combat remain largely forgotten today. From Edward Lansdale, defender of Philippine democracy; to John Singleton Mosby, a Confederate private who effectively prolonged the Civil War at least six months; to Captain Jack, a Modoc Indian chief who defied 100 times his followers' number of U.S. Army troops for months, Soldiers In The Shadows is a simply fascinating case study of military history and men who made it. Also very highly recommended is William Weir's 50 Battles That Changed The World (1564144917).

1 out of 5 stars misuse of the facts.......2003-08-03

on page 228, chapter 30, the author quoted that a Communist official said " You are a turtle egg!" This is a fact, but it happend on Nov 14, 1951(ref: "Truce Tent and Fighting Front", US Army Offical Korean War History), not in the spring of 1953 as the author claimed.

This seems small but the whole book thus becomes questionable.

1 out of 5 stars Is it the truth? Who knows..........2003-01-12

Special oeprations in the Korean War is a new/interesting subject for me. I've read quite a bit about Vietnam and post-Vietnam special ops stuff but this was my first text on the Korean War. Unfortunately, even if what is contained in this text is true...I have serious reservations about this text. This book is written with such a slant that it almost sounds like early 80's anti-communist propaganda!!!

For one thing, it constantly uses racial slurs to make the North Koreans, Chinese, Russians and the Japanese(?) sound like monsters or sub-human. It continues to wave flags about how great the Western "democratic" forces were and how evil the Communists were. Now I'm not making a judgement call here, but I think I can make up my own mind if facts are presented as objectively as possible...I'm not 2 years old and have to be told what is good or evil.

If that's not enough for you, the language used to describe operations is repetitive and dull.

I now see why this is "bargain price" book. Find something else. You'll thank me later.

    Breuer, William B. Shadow Warriors
The Covert War in Korea DS 921.5 S7 B74 1996

The well published Mr. Breuer--he boasts 23 other war-related texts-- has quite a talent for writing gripping text. Readers will find alot about the Korean War here not described in other books. There is a detailed description of the myriad of deceptive tactics employed by the North Koreans to distract attention from their imminent attack in the Seoul Corridor. Several chapters describe the preparations for the Inchon landing. Operation Trudy Jackson, using surveillance garnered from the small island of Yonghung, twelve miles south of Inchon, gathered vital data on troop strength, tidal ranges, placement of enemy mines, etc. I am eternally grateful to Breuer for finally translating "Wolmi-Do" as 'moon tip island'. (By the way, sunset and moonset over the Yellow Sea are a joy to behold]

Breuer is a bit confusing when he talks simultaneously about Inchon being a 'secret', while soldiers in Pusan, Japan, and the US referred to it as Operation Common Knowledge. Not only had the Chinese wargamed an Inchon landing as a possibility (and never informed the North Koreans they had done so), but the NY Times itself ran an article suggesting the idea in its September 14, 1950 edition. Breuer acknowledges this, but then shifts his focus to the disinformation campaign designed to fool the North Koreans the landing would be at Kunsan. I think his point should be to make clear that secrets are hard to keep and it is best to sew confusion to obscure your true intentions.

Breuer says the damage done by the Philby/Maclean/Burgess spy ring was primarily leaks of UN battle plans in North Korea, especially the restrictions placed on MacArthur. The Chinese knew they did not have to worry about another amphibious landing, for example. (Even when Van Fleet wanted a series of amphibious assaults up Korea's east coast, it was shot down-- the US had decided on a limited war.) Although the spies did their best to hide evidence of planned Chinese intervention, enough evidence was available from Commanders on the ground, and through other channels (such as the Indian Ambassador).

Other intelligence operations had a mixed outcome. The Li-mi project, an attempt to distract and tie down Chinese Communist armies in Yunan Province, was largely a failure. The US missed a major propoganda coup when they failed to publicize that smallpox raged in the devastated Chinese/North Korean territory. Ironically, it was the US that later suffered a barrage of Communist accusations about 'biological warfare.' The North Koreans constantly deceived US aerial reconnaisance into thinking major damage had been inflicted on roads, bridges, tunnels, and supply convoys.
The authors references to spy operations in Manchuria are interesting but sketchy and incomplete. Readers looking for cloak-and-dagger intrigue in Manchuria might want to read Lawrence Gardella's "Sing a Song to Jenny Next," instead. And the elaborate preparations to kidnap Syngman Rhee--who was dismayed at the US's willingness to accept a permanent division of the Peninsula-- make amusing reading for those aware of the crosscurrents of loyalty vs. pragmatism in the Cold War era.

Some spy operations pay off in ways that are unanticipated. Such was the outcome of operation Moolah, which offered a hundred grand to any communist who landed a MIG-15 at Kimpo airport. Two months after the War was over, North Korean Air Force Captain Ro Kum Suk did exactly that

4 out of 5 stars Exhilarating for any fan of military intrigue.......1997-05-12

In June 1950, North Korean communist soldiers crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea. The United States' stance against global communism would endure its first bloody test. Shadow Warriors: The Covert War in Korea documents the high level clandestine operations that encompassed the "Forgotten" War in the Far East. Breuer reveals that perilous cloak-and-dagger operations were equally common on both sides of the conflict. Whether it be evidence supporting direct Soviet military involvement in Korea or CIA operations deep into the Chinese mainland, Breuer writes with a flair that hooks the fan of political intrigue while presenting enough historical detail to satisfy the avid military historian.

Upon perusing Breuer's notes, most of his book is based upon memoirs of top-level officials in the Korean conflict and author interviews with key players. Nevertheless, further government documentation appears warranted to support the author's arguments. However, Shadow Warriors is highly entertaining as a work of literature and most informative into a realm of military history of which most casual historians are unaware.

Kol and Zoia figure out his problem and almost instantly understand just how much danger they could be in.

Cougar brings together a highly trained Special Forces soldier and an up and coming PI who face a problem that could get them both killed. Zoia has a lot of experience with the post-traumatic symptoms and is determine to help Kol. Kol is wondering if he has come down with post-traumatic stress disorder after his release. Kola and Zoia are wrong about the problem but together they begin the journey to face down their enemies. Cougar brings you right into the story and the entire book. After finishing I was very happy to be able to go on to the next. Ms. Chase was very successful in setting the hook and I couldn't wait to get to Zoia and Kol's ending.

    Jaguarondi by Betty Hanawa

Dylan Gomez has recently been forced out of the Service and the Special Forces because of the blackouts he suffers from. These blackouts are very new to him and the worse part is he can't remember and always wakes up naked. Today is no different, well it is a bit as he is in a cage and a strange woman is standing over him demanding answers. Haley Lundberg works in Wildlife Control Management and is surprised to find a man has replaced the Jaguarondi in her cage. Haley might be a civilian now, but for a while she was in the service and part of an elite woman's force. Haley and Dylan are both shocked to see him shift back and forth between a man and a Jaguarondi - now the question is who did it and why. Dylan is pissed and going to find out but not alone because no way is Hayley going to let him go on his own. Such begins their journey to danger and discovery.

Jaguarondi has two levelheaded ex-service specialists trying to wrap their minds around something out of fantasy. Haley knows that she can't ignore what she has on film and besides she doesn't want to ignore sexy Dylan anyway. Dylan is in total denial until Haley finds a way to make him remember one of his blackouts. Knowing that no one should every mess with free will, Haley and Dylan are determined to locate who changed Dylan and where it was done. I loved the full steam ahead and don't mess with us attitude of Haley and Dylan. It was so interesting seeing two logical people trying to put logic towards a fantastic problem. Again Jaguarondi pulled me in even more and I finished the story wondering where my journey was going to take me.

    Black Panther by Myla Jackson

Ramon Osceola has retreated to his island home to bring himself back under control. He has no idea what was done to him while being held captive, but it was enough for the military to retire him almost immediately after his rescue. Hannah Richards is on the run and isn't quite sure who she is running to. Hannah is a doctor who was blackmailed into doing scientific experiments on several men. She knows that her reception might be deadly when she admits who she is and what she has to offer. Ramon and Hannah connect right away but the feelings of passion are edged with rage to begin with. However Ramon can't turn Hannah away after he discovers why Hannah did it. They start a dangerous trip of rescue and revenge.

Black Panther places a very pissed panther in very close and personal contact with his doctor. Ramon knows he was given the ability to shift into a Panther but he isn't sure why or who exactly was behind it. Hannah has wanted Ramon since he was one of her subjects and now she must face his anger and request his help. Ramon and Hannah work their way from rage and desperation into passion while tracking down the person behind the experiments. The emotions that were written into Black Panther leaped off of the pages. The surprises for Ramon and Hannah kept me turning the pages. Another wonderful story in a great book.

    White Tiger by Delilah Devlin

Casey McTaggert is a data gatherer in a secret government agency. She has been tracking the double agent known as the "Tiger" for several years and when it became clear he was in the US she was determine to get to him. However she is amazed to find out that the "Tiger" is actually a White tiger shifter. Khalid Razeh has been an unknown double agent for years and has stayed out of the states for a long time. He was held captive with several other men, however he was the only one the group who is not American. Khalid knows that he has to find the solution before he is used as a scapegoat. Casey and Kahlid never expected the passion that pulled them together. Casey knows even better than Khalid what the danger is they are facing and who is actually behind everything.

In White Tiger you find out that sometimes the government can be fooled but not totally ticked. Casey had access to enormous amounts of data that until she meets Khalid doesn't come together in her mind. Khalid knows his life could be in danger if he doesn't get to the bottom of why he was changed. Casey and Khalid join forces to solve the mystery despite the danger they both will face. I was so happy to find that they were joined by the others for the showdown. Casey is able to gather all the pieces of her data together to help Khalid just when it matters the most. Ms. Devlin took two characters that should not have been able to come together and not only made it work, but made it seamless.

Shadow Warrior has four outstanding stories that intertwine so well that I actually forgot I was reading 4 stories by different authors. I found the entire plot line just different enough that it captured my attention right away. I actually did not want to put it down when I had to and picked it up as soon as I could to finish it. There is not one story that I can say stood out to me more than the rest, which is why I loved the entire anthology and kept forgetting it was an anthology. My only wish was that the ending was extended just a bit more so that I could have seen the final showdown.

Shadow Warrior to me is a must read and one I know I will come back to again and again. There are very few anthologies in which I actually forget that I'm reading a collection of stories by different authors, Shadow Warrior is one and so well done that I not only recommend it highly, but I Joyfully Recommend it. Enjoy it - I know you will.

4 out of 5 stars Four talented authors pulled me into the story and didn't let go until the last page!.......2006-11-11

I loved this anthology! The stories were imaginative and well thought out. Genetically enhanced shapeshifters? Sexy as hell heroes? Smart, sensual, take no bull heroines? Steamy sex? Thrilling stories? I'll take all of the above and you can get them in this book! I was rivetted from page one and the stories and love scenes flowed and had me turning pages right up to the very end. I highly recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars Smokin' HOT!!!.......2006-11-10

I've read my share of sensual romance, but this one is truly smokin' hot. Best part of all, the romance is entwined in engrossing, can't-put-it-down stories of shapeshifters. Each author's story was unique and well thought out. I loved being able to suspend my belief and get totally caught up in their futuristic world. Thanks for the great read.

5 out of 5 stars On Your Toes Exciting.......2006-11-10

I found this book to be gripping and sensual. The characters are well developed and all four books flow seamlessly into each other. The background was unique and diverse and the characters jumped off the pages. Well written. I'd wait in line to buy another book by these talented four authors.

2 out of 5 stars Shadow Warrior Knights of the Magical Realm.......2006-11-07

I was very disappointed in this book. The whole premise was shaky to begin with. The shape-shifter who was genetically enhanced and the woman who suppossedly fall for them. The lovemaking was stilted and boring, and overall just not what I expected. Do yourself a favor and save your money.
