    Book Description

CMMI® (Capability Maturity Model® Integration) describes best practices for the development and maintenance of products and services across their entire lifecycle. By integrating essential bodies of knowledge, CMMI provides a single, comprehensive framework for organizations to assess their development and maintenance processes, implement improvements, and measure progress.

This book is a definitive reference for the most current release of CMMI (version 1.2). In the new edition, the authors have added tips, hints, and cross-references in the margins (in color) throughout the process areas to help you better understand, apply, and find more information about the content of the process areas. The book also now includes brief, insightful perspectives on CMMI written by people influential in the model’s creation, development, and transition. A new case study from Raytheon illustrates a real-world application of the model to a services organization. Whether you are new to CMMI or familiar with an earlier version, if you need to know about, evaluate, or put the latest version of CMMI into practice, this book is an essential resource.

The book is divided into three parts.

Part I offers the broad view of CMMI, beginning with basic concepts of process improvement. It describes the process areas, their components, and their relationships to each other. It explains the model’s two representations as well as paths to the adoption and use of CMMI for process improvement and benchmarking.

Part II, the bulk of the book, details the generic goals and practices and the twenty-two process areas now comprising CMMI. The process areas are organized alphabetically by acronym for easy look-up. Each chapter includes goals, best practices, and examples for a particular process area. The two CMMI representations are described so that you will easily see their similarities and differences and thereby be better able to choose the right approach for your organization.

Part III contains several useful resources, including CMMI-related references, acronym definitions, a glossary of terms, and an index.

If you believe in creationism then read this book with caution. This book tries to brainwash you into thinking that evolution is based on solid foundation and creationism is quack. Buyer beware. I would not buy this book for someone under 18 years of age.

For over thirty years, McGraw has been putting out various editions of this highly successful textbook. Now in its tenth iteration, McGraw has made an important extension. It added a CD (which was long overdue). Plus, the book gives access to an online resource called PowerWeb. Pretty snazzy! You can access whole bunches of material there which is simply not in the book.

Hopefully, this may help motivate some students to learn more effectively. But a disquieting counterargument has arisen in some quarters. Is a new edition really needed? Perhaps an earlier edition would suffice for most students. If so, this would let several buy second hand versions far more cheaply. But if the publisher goes to this edition, and it is made mandatory by a school, then it is far harder for students to find used versions. At least for a few years. And later? When those used editions start circulating, what if the publisher and school then go to a newer edition?

This title is a comprehensive look at many aspects of science. Its Study guide is very helpful in preparing for examinations. The book, however, has a complicated way of explaining material. This slight defect may be reduced with the help of the useful appendixes, and study guides.

This book has a lot of tips about SQL Server, although it doesn't say that on the cover. This was actually good for me since I was going on a job interview and I needed something like a comprehensive tips reference book on SQL (and SQL Server). I could have easily chosen a worse book. It's a bit wordy for me, and I'm not used to seeing so many typos, but considering that I have seen some terrible SQL books out there (including my college text), this book is actually well thought out.

I wasn't expecting two people from UPS to have carry this book into my office--the book is huge.

I have been using MYSQL for a year and I am moving to MS SQL Server. The book's tips (over 600) have been invaluable.

I used the code the book provides to convert many of applications to support transactions. Got to eliminate tons of code.

1 out of 5 stars Faulty "research" = invalid conclusions.......2007-09-11

I realize that this book was originally written in 1987 and at that time, the studies cited by this amateur author weren't so grossly out of date as they are now. However, this book is in its 4th printing (2000) and a good scholar, rather than someone with a moral agenda to push, would have updated their research.

Even in 1987, the studies cited were outdated, clearly biased and/or lacking any scientific validity whatsoever (psychoanalytic "studies" from the 1960's), or blatantly misrepresented (John Money's "success" of gender socialization? Read "As Nature Made Him" by John Colapinto for the real story).

Gender orientation and sexual orientation are NOT the same thing; homosexuality is not a "symptom" of a "damaged" gender identity. Neither gender nor sexual orientation is 100% socialization, as Konrad tries to claim; there IS an inborn component, which he would have learned had he done some current research - but of course, that would only happen if he had actually wanted to give a fair and balanced study of the topic, which is clearly not his purpose.

Konrad's use of "science" is a joke at best and dangerous at worst as he tries to push the idea that homosexuality is a disorder, a symptom, and not only a "choice" but the WRONG choice. This book should've died in the 80's where it belongs.

5 out of 5 stars For the new struggler.......2007-06-27

Pastor Konrad's book, "You Don't Have To Be Gay" is one is read initially back in 1989 at Outpost Ministries. It was challenging to me then as I started out my journey out of homosexuality.

Today, I like blessing brothers just starting their journey with copies of "You Don't Have To Be Gay" as a means to help them along in their journey! I highly recommend it for any man leaving the Gay Lifestyle or for men wanting to help them!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful. Accurate. Worth a read by even the detractors........2007-05-04

Never finding solace within the so-called "gay community", never mind that if you're not a certain way (aka 'the stereotype'), you'll be laughed and harrassed by as many within the "community" as those who'll maim gay people (which is also a sin - violence against another is always violence), I bought this book. And read it.

I used to be homosexual. I used to be very much gay-rights, pro "civil unions", and so on. But noting how so few in the gay community seemed to care about these things, that was the first sign. Having visited 9 annual festivals/parades since "coming out", I've seen a lot of changes. None of them very good and would only incite the ire of people far less "diplomatic" than I.

It is worth the read. For anybody, including counselors and psychiatrists and especially gay men, longing for loving relationships rather than sleazy and dangerous liasions with other men who certainly won't care about anybody except themselves.

While I never thought myself inadequate as a male, the remaining reasons that incite people to homosexuality are told with gravitas and veracity. You cannot find solace in an area filled with other people also lacking solace. Especially if you have to do certain, uncomfortable things in order to "feel accepted" or even "normal" when you know it isn't and you know they won't change regardless what you do to attain their favor. It's ersatz.

Even Roseanne recently made a statement, which only reflects the narcissistic behaviors in the gay community. And she didn't need to apologize for them because she was correct. Keep in mind, she helped promote GLBT people as equals during the 1990s (at least until the final year of her TV show when they were turned into stereotypes as well.)

Maybe I never found the right man. But I was laughed at by plenty of them over the last decade because I had goals and ideals. They just wanted to get off or mock anybody who didn't "think" just like they did. Or claimed to. And, the ultimate irony, it was the gay "community" that had me seeking other options. What they call living is deplorable, and if they are represented by the parades and festivals featuring X-rated materials and acts, then there's a lot of warped folks out there who can't realize they are only adding fuel to the political fire. (A certain singer, a few months back, described "gay culture" quite adequately and that was the wake-up call for me.) But the time for cynicism is over. It's time to move on. I want to thank Jeff for an eye-opening, legitimate book. I wish I had read it sooner.

One final thought: Love is about the soul. Not the body. Homosexuals tell us it's love of the body; that much is incontrovertibly clear. And what they do in the name of demanding equality is not love.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2007-02-24

This book gave me hope when I'd been told for years to just accept myself as gay. It angers me that my counselor had never heard about his information. I had to find it myself.

5 out of 5 stars For the person who does not want to stay gay or is tired of living the gay lifestyle.......2007-01-05

This book is a great resource. It is written, not for the person who is happy being gay, but for the person that is looking for a way out. The research is excellent, and the author himself walked away from the gay lifestyle so he speaks with authority. I too have walked away from being gay and I highly recommend this book for someone just starting to research the facts and is looking for hope.

    Book Description

Originally developed for use in automotive applications, CAN (Controller-Area-Network) has become the de-facto communication standard in vehicles and mobile systems, as well as in any kind of distributed embedded system.

With this book, the necessary basics for understanding, implementation and application of CAN-based data communication systems shall be provided. Therefore, a basic introduction into data communication in cars, machines and on the factory floor is given. A main focus of the book is the introductory description of the physical and data link layer of the CAN protocol. In addition, a description of the general architecture of CAN protocol controllers is provided together with the most important CAN chips available on the market. Another focus of the book is the introduction to the most important CAN-based higher layer protocols, especially CANopen and DeviceNet. Finally, general aspects for the design and implementation of CAN-based networks as well as hard- and software components and development tools are described.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Poor readability.......2005-04-01

This publication attempts, with good intentions, to provide a complete overview of Controller Area Network, but lacks the basics of good and comprehensible writing. The technical information on the CAN standard is mostly solid and provides some interesting details, but also contains a number of incosistencies and leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Rather than concentrating on CAN alone, the author(s) decided to include sections on higher-layer protocols such as CANopen, DeviceNet and others, which are too detailed for a quick overview, yet by far not sufficient for someone who needs solid information. Also, the author(s) apparently did not invoke the process of proof-reading before publishing their work (

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Introduction to CAN.......2004-06-15

This book is a comprehensive textbook from which engineers can learn how to develop CAN networks and Higher Layer CAN Protocols. It is an essential part of any engineering library covering the physical, data link and higher layer protocols of CAN, including CANopen, DeviceNet, SAE J1939 and time-triggered CAN (TTCAN). It also included a review of several microcontroller brands that have integrated CAN controllers as well as a chapter devoted to planning and designing CAN networks that I, as a novice, found most useful.

Having had no previous detailed experience with CAN, I was able to set up a CAN network and begin exchanging messages after reading this book. I believe this is a must read for anyone who is contemplating using CAN networks.

3 out of 5 stars Not great, but no other choices........2003-11-14

This book contains some good introductory information on CAN,
but it is hurt by poor readability. The book was originally
written in German, and the translation to English is lacking.
You can usually figure out what is meant, but some chapters are
tough going. [usage hints to editor: "e.g." should only be
    used parenthetically]

The main reason I bought the book was for the chapter on
DeviceNet, and I was disappointed in the treatment of
DeviceNet. I found the descriptions of DeviceNet frames were
often confusing. If the book contained just _one_ example
message for each type, it would have answered so many questions
that I haven't been able to figure out after re-reading the
    text several times.

What would have been wonderful would have been an example
"session" that included connection setup and data exchange
messages, but the DeviceNet chapter only contains examples of a
small subset of the message types.

    After paying $80, I felt a little ripped-off, but it's the only
thing I could find that covered DeviceNet at all. The
introductory CAN info was OK, but it is available elsewhere in
better prose for much less money.

Sure, there are probably grammatical errors in this review, but
you didn't pay $80 for it...

      Book Description

A range of alternative mechanisms can usually be postulated for most organic chemical reactions, and identification of the most likely requires detailed investigation. Investigation of Organic Reactions and their Mechanisms will serve as a guide for the trained chemist who needs to characterise an organic chemical reaction and investigate its mechanism, but who is not an expert in physical organic chemistry.Such an investigation will lead to an understanding of which bonds are broken, which are made, and the order in which these processes happen. This information and knowledge of the associated kinetic and thermodynamic parameters are central to the development of safe, efficient, and profitable industrial chemical processes, and to extending the synthetic utility of new chemical reactions in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and academic environments.Written as a coherent account of the principal methods currently used in mechanistic investigations, at a level accessible to academic researchers and graduate chemists in industry, the book is highly practical in approach. The contributing authors, an international group of expert practitioners of the techniques covered, illustrate their contributions by examples from their own research and from the relevant wider chemical literature. The book covers basic aspects such as product analysis, kinetics, catalysis, and investigation of reactive intermediates. It also includes material on significant recent developments, e.g. computational chemistry, calorimetry, and electrochemistry, in addition to topics of high current industrial relevance, e.g. reactions in multiphase systems, and synthetically useful reactions involving free radicals and catalysis by organometallic compounds.

        5 out of 5 stars It Ain't Over 'til It's Over.......2002-03-12

John Lukacs's book deserves a new look in the post-September 11 world. Written in response to Francis Fukayama's well-intentioned but misguided book on "The End of History" (a thesis that Fukayama was forced to revise recently), Lukacs shows that history, and human nature, are both alive and well. Written in a lively, readable style that is capable of true eloquence, this book dismisses the neo-Hegelian thesis that the triumph of democracy is inevitable.

Instead, Lukacs points to the long experience, in Europe and elsewhere, of war, evil and the continued power of cultural and moral factors in driving human behavior. By reminding us of these truths, Lukacs demonstrates that history can not only revive the past, but enlighten the present. Particularly impressive is his emphasis on character, and the power of individuals to change history, in decisive ways, at critical moments. Great men -- Churchill in particular -- are given their just due, and determinists, economic or otherwise, are given short shrift.

My only criticism of the book is Lukacs's sharp and unwarranted criticism of Ronald Reagan, whose boldness and persistence are dismissed with the usual stereotyped remarks about his lack of energy, intelligence and education. Lukacs overlooks the fact that Gorbachev, who gets the lion share's of the praise for the end of the Cold War, merely bowed to the superior force of the United States, which was marshalled with great skill by Reagan and his national defense team, particularly Caspar Weinberger and CIA Director William Casey. To paraphrase Mae West, Gorby's goodness had nothing to do with it.

Despite this defect, however, Lukacs's book, while nearly ten years old, has aged well. I recommend it highly, especially for those seeking understanding and perspective on the fate and future of the West in this hostile and unstable world.

5 out of 5 stars An unconventional vision into the future.......2000-06-28

People who don't like this book have a fundamental misunderstanding of Lukacs' perspective and, I would bet, have not read his previous book of essays on this same topic "The Passing of the Modern Age." Lukacs is not a "conservative". He is a self-proclaimed "reactionary". His ideas, generally don't fall within the typecast categories of "liberal" or "conservative". Readers who appreciate clearly thought out and well written observations into the events of the last century and possible senarios in the future will greatly enjoy reading one of the more original thinkers of our time.

2 out of 5 stars Lukacs walks the rope of political correctness.......1999-06-14

I spotted this book on a book-market in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and knowing Lukacs as a conservative yet good historian decided to have a read. Disappointment is the first word that springs to mind. Why? Lukacs makes quite a few good observations about Eastern Europe, democracy and the European Union. The problem is that he never really gives a solution or even a direction in which to go citing " I am no prophet". Strangely, he plays the prophet for the greater part of the book. In his reflections and conclusions Lukacs says that the twentieth century is already over and the end of modernity is just around the corner. He might be right and this is a legitimate point to make. However, in the book there is an undercurrent that suggests that things will only get worse. The new barbarians are coming! And that brings up the second point: Lukacs is truly on the knife's edge of political correctness. Remarks about a.o. Hitler, immoral and vandalous (immigrant) youths discolour this book. Lukacs is grumbling like an old "law and order" man and that is not befitting a historian of his caliber.

All in all, too bad.....worth a read though, if only to see how Lukacs' idea about the new barbarianism coming from inside the human being, is proven by the author himself!!

2 out of 5 stars An interesting topic ground into the earth.......1998-07-01

Very boring. A 20 page monograph puffed into a book. A few ideas, widely scattered through more detail about eastern european ethnic divisions and prejudices than you'll ever want to know.

          Critical Acclaim for ADENAUER

"A gripping narrative . . . brings to life an intriguing historical figure . . . an enthralling perspective on the processes that shaped the postwar world."--Daily Telegraph (London)

"Charts the ironies of Adenauer's complicated life. This is the story of a marathon man, but it is narrated at the pace of a sprinter and with the elegance of a hurdler."--The Times (London)

"Lucid and engaging. This is a well-researched and elegantly written volume which deserves a wider readership than the purely political."--The Herald (Glasgow)

"A highly readable, thoroughly reliable, intelligently critical life-and-times. . . . This portrait does justice to a man who is often invoked as a prophet of a United States of Europe, but who was in truth the greatest of German patriots."--Literary Review (London)

"Well-researched and admirably written . . . reveals Adenauer the man--with all his authority and strength, his persistence and endurance, and his streak of ruthlessness and political cunning."--The Independent (London)

          THE LAST GREAT FRENCHMAN

"Knowledgeable, lucid . . . the best English biography of de Gaulle."--The New York Times Book Review

5 out of 5 stars A strongly recommended addition to community library Sports & Athletics collections........2006-11-05

The 'Tour de France' is an historic annual bicycling contest across the French countryside and through French communities that began in 1903 and in recent years (thanks in large part to Lance Armstrong) has become of great interest in America. In "Ascent: The Mountains Of The Tour De France", British cycling author and 'Tour de France' expert Richard Yates has written a history of this remarkable bicycle race with all its drama and competitive excitement in the mountain country expanses of the race course. Profusely illustrated with 150 duotone photographs and other historical illustrations, this superbly written and knowledgeably presented 160-page history is a 'must read' for all dedicated bicyclists and Tour de France enthusiasts, as well as a strongly recommended addition to community library Sports & Athletics collections.
