Art meets earth science in Earthsong, a gallery of spectacular aerial photographs by Bernhard Edmaier. Reproduced in full color on oversized pages, the patterns of deserts, glaciers, volcanoes, and grassland often resemble abstract paintings. But the wisdom of this book lies in its pairing of beautiful images with brief explanations by geologist Angelika Jung-Huettl of the forces that produced these startling effects. Divided into four parts--Agua (water), Barren (tundra), Desert, and Green--Earthsong is full of surprises. The action ranges from the brilliant, firecracker-like explosion of lava fields on Mt. Etna in Sicily to the sci-fi shapes of boiling mud pools in Waiotapu, New Zealand, powered by sulphur gas. On Disko Bay in western Greenland, a delicate embroidery of fine-grained ice has been shaped by wind, waves and frozen fog. The pristine clarity of early morning light reveals huge swaths of rolling and rippling orange-red sand in the Namib Desert of southwest Africa. Subtly meandering patterns worthy of a master etcher are carved into the icy wastes of Iceland by the action of volcanic dust, snow, sun and wind. While most of the book surveys sparsely inhabited regions, geologic action is also observed next door to major population centers. Cutting a dark ribbon through a lush meadow in eastern Germany, the Tollense River and its hungry algae will eventually erode and conquer the entire valley. Quietly acknowledging the effects of global warning, Earthsong literally hovers above the earth to reveal the effects of the interconnected forces that continue to shape our planet. --Cathy Curtis

Absolutely striking photographs.......2005-02-10
Edmaier takes us to a variety of isolated and relatively unpopulated areas for some terrific aerial photos of our planet. We see water, ice, tundra, glaciers, sandy deserts, volcanoes, coasts, grassland, and forests. And Jung-Huettl's descriptions of what we are seeing are nicely done.
The overall effect is eerie, as if the Earth were uninhabited (by our species, at least) and we humans were looking the place over and trying to decide if we wanted to visit it, live there, or try someplace else.
In any case, the photographs are marvellous and show plenty of detail. If I were writing a book on planetary science, I'd want to use a couple of these photos for the section on our little world.
Disappointing - especially from Phaidon publishing.......2005-02-02
I was really looking forward to receiving and reading this book - I had looked at it in the stores but it was plastic wrapped and, therefore, I could not see what was inside. However, once I had received it from Amazon and opened it, my eager anticipation gave way to annoyance and disappointment. The photographs of the earth from above are, indeed, spectacular and of the highest quality, BUT Edmaier has used (or appears to have used) the same (or variations of the same) photographs over and over again - even though the book is supposed to have four distinct themes, Aqua, Barren, Desert and Green. I own several books published by Phaidon and have been impressed beyond expectation with every one of them - not this time. I considered the book price to be reasonable until I opened it - now I feel as if I have been ripped off! With over 220 pages, I expected in the region of 150-200 different photographs. Yes, the photographs are different but most of them are just different views of the same subject - not what I expected at all. Overall, a nice coffee table book, but far too expensive for what you actually get. Very disappointing!
Great coffee-table viewing.......2004-12-09
This is a beautiful book--incredible photography, carefully printed. There is a printing flaw on page 26.
An Extraordinary Visual Feast.......2004-11-28
This is a book that one must see to truly appreciate. I came across it in a store and began to browse because it looked as though it was a collection of spectacular works of modern art. The realisation that it was an album of aerial photographs only made it more compelling. There are many images that are breathtaking in their own right but the effect of combining them into a planetary photo essay is nothing short of outstanding. It uniquely explores the great diversity of Mother Earth while highlighting the beauty that is always present in her many forms.
Everyone I have showed this book to has had a similar reaction. If you are looking for a gift for that person who is difficult to buy for because they seem to have everything, look no further. They are sure to be delighted.
Book Description
Wisdomkeepers takes you on an extraordinary spiritual journey into the lives, minds, and natural-world philosophy of Native American spiritual elders. The elders tell who they are, how they live, and what they believe. Magnificent portraits complement the soaring text. Among those profiled are Buffalo Jim, a Seminole who describes the Seminole story of creation as if the Everglades were Eden, talks of his people's individual passage into the after life, and reveals that every field of wild plants is, to him, a medicine garden. You'll also meet "Uncle" Frank Davis (Fancy Warrior), a Pawnee Elder who describes the "path to understanding" as a trail filled with scraps of paper, each one a piece of a puzzle. Also profiled is Mathew King, a Lakota who warns of punishments for those who would destroy the Earth Mother.
Readers share the innermost thoughts and feelings, dreams and visions, laughter, healing remedies, and prophecies of the Wisdomkeepers, whose humanity shines through every page.

He's a hack writer.......2007-09-29
I'd give this a low rating just because the author is an insufferable spammer.
But his writing is tedious, too. They're called "vanity presses" for reasons like this.
A MUST READ!.......2007-08-28
If you are interested in Native American history and culture, this book (like all of Arden's books) is a great place to provide insight. Wisdom is the key point in this work as well as his others. A fantastic piece and one that will grab your heart, mind, and soul.
Wisdomkeepers is a must read!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-08
I have had the pleasure of knowing both Harvey Arden and Steve Wall for many years now. Their books have touched the heart of many people around the world. This book is one of their best ever! The photos and stories/histories of the Wisdomkeepers within awaken your senses in a profound way. Journey with these two former National Geographic icons and learn with them, through them, and find what you've been looking for - an understanding of what it is to be human, through the journey of these amazing purveyors of hope, wisdom and truth.
Wisdom.......2007-05-22
She:Kon (Sago)(Hello) To all who read this and hope you are all well. I personally know some of the Wisdom Keepers, Elders whose words are in this book and know them to be of good mind and person. I am Mohawk and Odawa and I come from upstate New York near some of the Reservations and I fully recommend this book for any person who needs to come back to the reality of the living world around them and bring them back to the basic relation between humankind and all the life that is on this earth and surrounds us in the cosmos.
Great Teachings...............2007-03-14
Very informative, Well done and a listening pleasure...Something you can listen to over again and pickup something new each time....

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful artwork, and a story that can only be described as "epic".......2007-03-09
The artwork in Earthsong is a fairly unique style, and over time continues to improve as the artist continues the story. The first volume (this one) is actually entirely redrawn, and some of the original story has been revised for the print edition. The result of this is a very beautiful book, cover-to-cover. From the first page spread, which features the main character laying under a beautiful tree, to the pages in which we meet the main villain, this book does not dissapoint either in drawing or writing.
The story is as stunning as the artwork, with character depth being the primary draw for me. Characters like Nanashi, K'thonya, and Felucca become quick favorites as the main character (named Willow) learns more about them, and more about her new surroundings in a quest to find out who exactly, or what exactly she is.
Earthsong is definitely a story that anyone can pick up (it's child-friendly), and is beautifully drawn and written so it will also keep you entertained throughout. The only bad part about it, is when you get to the last page and realize you can't keep going.
Absolute Eye candy.......2007-03-01
There are so many reasons why Earthsong is worth buying. Number one has to be the art though, it's one gorgeous page after the other. The colors are jaw dropping, the characters are extremely well designed, and overall if for nothing else you'll want to buy it just to be able look at something this gorgeous.
But you'll want to buy it for more then that. Because the storyline is as good as the artwork. It's engaging and unique, but has a lot of very familiar tones to it that will entertain sci-fi, fantasy, and even action/adventure fans alike. In my opinion, it's one of the best on-line to print comics since megatokyo.
Earthsong.......2007-01-10
A very well written and well drawn comic. I have enjoyed it in it's online version and definitely would purchase more should they come around.
Earthsong - Well Written and Illustrated.......2007-01-10
For fans of the newer versions of Japanese style manga/anime graphic novels - Earthsong (originally and still on-line)is a must read. The plot is intriguing and the artwork is top notch. The author/artist, Lady Yates, spins a unique universe where the stars and planets are sentient ... and I'll let you read the graphic novel for the rest. No point in spoiling the surprises!
Earthsong Vol1 review.......2006-11-04
A very interesting comic, not often I get drawn in enough to buy the comic in a book. Great artwork along with a good story and characters you feel like you actually get to know makes this a great start to what looks to be a top-class comic.

Lyrical.......2004-04-29
The photographs are gorgeous, sure, but what really sets this book apart is its lyrical mastery of the poetic. This is one photographer who can write almost better than he snaps. The descriptions are liquid, the stories float. His exquisite descriptions match the peerless beauty of the nature he writes about. A beautiful book. Newbert should write more. He brings the majesty of the ocean to the printed page.
Within a Rainbowed Sea.......2000-03-25
Beautifully photographed. It's sets the standard for underwater photographers worldwide. Probably the finest "coffee table" book of its type.
Book Description
In Earthsong, the trilogy's long-awaited finale, the Aliens have abandoned Earth, taking their technologies with them and plunging the planet into economic and ecological disaster. Devastated, the women decide to take their failed Laadan project back underground, desperately seeking guidance from their long-dead foremothers. The women discover an ingenious solution to the problem of human violence and seek to spread their knowledge-but has their final solution come too late?
Customer Reviews:
Imaginative departure from "Native Tongue".......2000-06-02
This is presented as the third volume of the "Native Tongue" trilogy. In a sense this is true, since it uses the same universe and is set at a later date than the first two volumes. In most respects it is not, since it departs from the main theme ("language sets the stage for perception") and the grand design started in the first two volumes and picks up other ideas.
This is much less a true sci fi novel than the first two volumes and it is even more tongue-in-cheek. If nothing else, this book is highly imaginative and a pleasure to read.
Feminist future fantasy about language altering thought.......1996-11-08
This is the third book in a series of three, and is clearly the inferior of it's predecesors.
In Native Tongue and Judas Rose, Suzette Haden Elgin wrote provokatively about
the role of language in a fictional future where woman are second class citizens.
Earthsong simulataneously abandons the major subject of the previous two books (the
emergence of a "woman's language", laadan) and at the same time will make
absolutely no sense to people who haven't read the earlier books.
Also, many of the characters are mere snapshots (introduced to give us a flavor of
the range of women's viewpoints in this new society) and the lack of deep
characterizations and fragmented narrative can be disconcering, particularly
if you like your fantasy with clear connections and resolution.
I don't mean to sound totally negative, for there are some thought-provoking
ideas here- particularly a new way to solve the problem of human starvation.
But these ideas stretch the boundries of scientific credibility. For all these reasons,
I give Earthsong a 4.

Book Description
Warm illustrations and the rhythm of a traditional song carry an important reminder for new generations "In the North Atlantic Ocean 'neath the Arctic sun, Lived a mom and papa right whale and their whale calf one. Blow! said the mom. I blow! said the one. And they blew and they spouted 'neath the Arctic sun." Read it. Sing it. Enjoy it. Learn from it. This picture book for the preschool set, based on acclaimed singer-songwriter Sally Rogers' popular song Over in the Endangered Meadow, offers a host of pleasures. Its rhyming text, which revolves around dialogue between parents and their offspring, both human and animal, can be read aloud and also sung to the traditional tune Over in the Meadow. As the words roll along, the book proves to be a glimpse of animal families and a counting vehicle wrapped into one. In addition to the right whale, ten other endangered animals are named: panda bear, Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, black-footed ferret, sun conure, Gila monster, leatherback turtle, gray wolf, American crocodile, and Indian python. Notes at the back give additional information. Children will enjoy how the warmly stylized art brings all the animals into a quilt that symbolizes the unity of everything on Earth. Share! said my grandpa. Let's share this place./And take care of Mother Earth as she spins through space.
Customer Reviews:
A pleasing book of many uses.......2001-06-29
The poem, "Over in the Meadow" by Olive Wadsworth is one of my all-time favorites. It is from this poem that the song, "Over in the Endangered Meadow" is taken, upon which this book is based. Given that it is a counting poem, not only conservationalist ideals are presented, but a progression of numbers as well. My two-year-old and I both enjoy the lush, rich, saturated illustrations that depict a variety of endangered species in their natural habitats. Notes on the animals and what is endangering them, as well as the musical score, are included at the back.
Since, in the book, the song is sung from the perspective of grandparents to their grandchildren, environmentally conscientious grandparents might want to add this book to their collection, or choose it as a gift for their young loved ones.
Another fine nature/counting book inspired by "Over in the Meadow" is "Somewhere in the Ocean" by Jennifer Ward and T.J. Marsh. We bought that book for our son following a trip to the aquarium nearly a year ago, and it continuities as one of our toddler's most requested favorites.

Excellent execution of concept (see Editorial Review).......2002-01-20
The photographs are simply spectacular, from the sweeping herds of wildebeest(?) to the flamingoes... Art Wolfe's short, but descriptive commentaries about each photo are not only very informative, but quite interesting!
And notwithstanding the disclaimer about the (minor) digital manipulation for artistic effect, which the photographer very openly discusses in the book, these are some of the most incredible wildlife pictures you can see...
