4 out of 5 stars Pretty cool for kids and adults.......2002-03-11

This is a very cute book. It appears to be for kids but can be enjoyed by adults as well. It is a guide to drawing the animated style heroes. It goes over the basics of how to do proportions, as well as how to view body parts as everyday shapes (explains it better than some of the other books I've seen). It uses the heroes to tell you how to do things, which is a cute device. It even explains how to draw the center of balance, action, perspective, foreshortening, and the like. I really enjoyed this book. Very easy to understand. The only thing it lacked was that while it went over how to draw the male form in detail, it did not take the same care in the female form. Some of the differences were covered, but not all. Other than that it's great! Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars a preatty good book for beginers.......2000-01-07

well the truth about this book is that it ain't all that useful if you already know how to draw. Yet if you have no idea how to pick up a pencil this is the book for you

5 out of 5 stars Great instruction.......2007-06-12

This book is really great. My son picked it out as something he wanted because Spiderman was on the cover. I would never have thought to buy it. The content is great. It takes you step by step in drawing. It all starts with the stick figure with ball joints. This may seem dumb, but it is essential. I have been poor at drawing a body or figure, but after using the starting point of the stick figure and then adding more to it, I could not believe how well it turned out. I still only at the beginning too. Lots more to learn from it! This is a great way to teach my son how to draw at an early age. The superhero tie in is perfect, but the content is top notch.

4 out of 5 stars Great for kids!.......2007-02-06

I make my living as an artist and am a lover of comic book and cartoon art. This book is a great introduction for children of any age who want to learn to draw superheroes and comics. It keeps the concepts fairly simple. My kids love it. I believe they have done all the exercises in the book and are ready for something a little more in depth...like maybe "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way."

2 out of 5 stars Good for young artists only. More serious artists left wanting more........2005-10-08

This book is good for young artists and young artists only. If you're a kid who just wants to enhance your doodling skills then buy this book! The markers it comes with are water based, cheap, and nothing like what the pros use. If you are over 13 or you are young but want to become a very serious artist do not buy this book! you should buy: How To Draw the Marvel Way by Stan Lee. That book is quite a bit more advanced and involved for drawing your favorite Marvel characters and for creating your own characters.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Drawing Books Ever Written.......2003-06-22

When I started out with this book, I was a clumsy, struggling artist, who knew nothing of muscle layout, stick figures, how to draw hands: mostly nothing. I had been illustrating my comic books with simple cartoon figures for some years.
After purchasing this book, in literally two weeks after I started reading, it my drawing skill increased three-fold! My simple cartoon characters found life in incredibly illustrated figures and costumes, bringing to life new characters in my excitement to draw new things.

This book is not just another drawing book; in fact, I have never seen anything like it. It doesn't just teach you to draw in the Marvel style, it kick-starts your unique artstyle. So in just a couple years, one will have almost indefinitely recognized their own way of drawing detailed figures.

Not just an average drawing book, this is a drawing book that shouldn't be passed up. This is the epitome of a wonderful drawing book for beginners. An enthusiastic 5/5!

5 out of 5 stars Great art book for art class........2003-01-05

I brought this book to help me with an art project. With the book's help I got a 98 on the project. It gives steps on how to draw many marvel characters like from, Spider-man, Rogue, Storm, and many more. A great book for beginners of all ages.

1 out of 5 stars A complete waste of resources.......2006-02-25

Sadly, this book was outdated and inapplicable the day it hit the stands. Repeated changes to the City of Heroes interface, infrastructure and gameplay have moved the game so far away from this book it often seems to be discussing an entirely different game. In many ways, it is.

If you're looking for a quick start guide, strategy guide, or even just a collection of helpful hints, this is NOT the book you want.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide!.......2005-10-03

Very helpful guide. Much of CoH is not easy to understand and this guide really helps.

3 out of 5 stars Well, it could have been better..........2005-09-20

The strategy guide is outdated, and should be revised for the current issue of city of heroes, the book still refers to the villains "council" as Fifth Column, and there are other things that are clearly outdated, it would be nice if Prima would take the time to give us a quality product, all in all, I would say, if there is a marketplace seller with a cheap price on this, go for it, it's been useful, but don't pay full price for an outdated strategy guide.

5 out of 5 stars Helps Wonders.......2005-08-30

I use my book all the time. To help myself and to help other players. It is a little outdated in that it doesn't have the badges n it, but being that I have 2 computers, it is no biggie to pull the site up on one and the game on the other. Hubby and I both love it...though I use it more. : ))

Book Description

In 1935, popular culture was transformed forever when DC published its first book of all-new, all-original comic material. To the delight of millions of kids everywhere, the modern comic book was born.

With the introduction of Superman in 1938. DC Comics made history again, this time with the publication of the first super hero comic book. To this day, the Man of Steel remains the most recognized and celebrated hero in the world. Inspired by its innovative early success, DC went on to create legions of other superheores--Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and dozens more of the most popular comic book characters ever created.

In the sixty years since the first super heroes were created, the artists, writers, and editors of DC Comics have been developing, refining and extending the reach of their comic book characters. The DC fictional world has branched into a worldwide profusion of entertainment formats: books, toys, movies, radio, television, video games, and an online computer network.

Here, for the very first time, is the complete story of America's favorite heroes and their talented, dedicated creators. In over 100 short and spirited essays, author Les Daniels offers remarkable new anecdotes about the company's history, traces the complex genealogies of the characters, describes behind-the-scenes politics that influence the stories, and interviews dozens of artists and writers--the real stars of his engrossing tales. The reader can open the book anywhere and become immersed immediately in the fantasy world of high adventure and magical mayhem.

5 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A very good history, covering all the major characters up to when it was published, as well as the various tv and movie ventures. It even throws in a few merchandising samples, that may well be of interest to the hardcore collector type.

A definite must have reference material for the DC fan with an historical interest.

4 out of 5 stars DC A to Z.......2006-02-26

Necessity for any DC fan. It is dated (1995) but it still have the major characters that made DC great.

3 out of 5 stars coffee table book, more like Superman, Batman, and friends.......2002-06-12

Unlike Peter Sanderson's Marvel Universe, which is also an oversized coffee table book, Les Daniels doesn't try to create an overview of the DC Universe or dwell on the growth of the major characters. Well, he does, but only for Superman and Batman for the most part. Not that other DC Comics don't rate a mention; even Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis get a bit. The problem with the book, which isn't bad by any means, is that it is broken into two-page sections, with no topic allowed to go beyond that. Therefore, there are copious two-page spreads about Superman and Batman, and other characters are likely to get one. One of those two gets a spread every five or so.

I grew up a Marvel zombie, but because of Daniels's choices, I learned more about the Marvel Universe from Sanderson than I learned from Daniels about the DC Universe, and I expected it to be the other way around. This is not to say Daniels doesn't have valuable information. His material about the founding of DC and much of the Golden Age material is going to be largely new for younger DC readers, who grew up with Action #1 as the most valuable comicbook of all time. I doubt too many people knew about the Golden Age Red Tornado, a hefty homemaker turned superhero who was something like a female predecessor to Marvel's Forbush Man, or certainly dressed that way, and played for comedy. Oddly, aside from showing a two-page spread depicting the Super Powers action figures of the eighties, the better known Silver Age Red Tornado is never mentioned. While Red Tornado is a second-stringer, he's hardly a minor figure in the DC Universe. There is comparatively little on Vertigo, despite its significance, and it perhaps goes into excess on film versions of the DC characters (the only place Congo Bill is mentioned, despite his recent Vertigo treatment). Other characters rating only a few paragraphs or even a mere sentence include Green Arrow, Mister Miracle, Shade the Changing Man, Animal Man, The Spectre, Deadman, The Demon, The Phantom Stranger, The Creeper, Firestorm, even Aquman! Very little about Brainiac; nothing on The Scarecrow or Mr. Freeze, either. Too little on The Flash and Hawkman. Oddly, even though it notes the Super Powers action figures were designed by Jack Kirby, it doesn't mention whther the Super Powers comicbook series he was deeply involved in in the 1980s was really a toy tie-in or really had to do with the Fourth World (though the two page spread on it said it was never completed, it still made no mention of Super Powers other than the action figures).

Perhaps because DC had to restructure its continuity so many times and say certain stories never happened, or were at least part of an eradicated timeline (they happened, but the world itself was revised through a crossover paradox, negating that they happend) that Daniels took this treatment. Perhaps he was trying to be more commericial. But two page spreads on Superman food products, Batman food products, ephemera for each, is a little excessive considering what was chosen to be left out, even if these two ARE more commercial.

At this time, I don't know that there is a better alternative to this book regarding the DC Universe. None of what is here is bad, but some of the choices leave a lot to be desired. Great coffee table book for the DC fan, but one is unlikely to learn much about the characters of the past 30-40 years that isn't going to be well known to them.

5 out of 5 stars Aliens, Amazons and Dark Knight Detectives.......2002-05-31

"DC Comics : Sixty Years of the World's Favorite Comic Book Heroes" is a nice tribute to the company that has given us some of our most recognizable and long lasting fiction characters. Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman are as much a part of Americana as Mickey Mouse, Coca-Cola and Moby Dick. A blend of art and cheap entertainment, the comic book has evolved throughout the decades, as have the heroes within.

The history of this company is laid out from the beginnings of the comic book, to the debut of the long-running Action Comics (Superman) and Detective Comics (Batman). Each of the company's successive stages is detailed, the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, and the Modern Age. Familiar rivals, such as Plastic Man, Captain Marvel and the Charleston and Quality heros are shown. Frank Miller and Alan Moore are given their just due. Superheroes in film and on television are shown.

The pages contain great photographs and reprints of classic comic culture. It is nice to see the classic covers of the years in high quality reproductions. A cavalcade of toys, badges, trinkets and other tie-ins are displayed.

All in all, this is a great book for DC comics fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute for a Major Contributor to Pop Culture.......2001-08-07

The modern comic book came to life with "Superman." Since the "man of steel" burst on the scene more than 60 years ago, there has been an onslaught of underwear-clad superheroes, many of the more legendary ones under the DC banner. All of the company's major titles and their respective print and filmed versions are featured here, from the "Batman" serials of the 40's to the update 90's television series "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." For anyone with a passing interest in comics as an entertainment and art form, this is a lavishly illustrated and comprehensive work. In sequential order, we get the full history of DC from its humble beginnings to its status as one of the premier companies in its field. Marvel may have overtaken it in the 60's with its more "adult" characters, DC still reigns as the originator of the comic book and the book supremely showcases that status.

4 out of 5 stars The Amazing World of DC Comics.......2007-05-10

This book goes over the history of DC Comics. It is a "coffee table" type book with lots of colorful pictures. It does a good job of discussing most of the major characters and genres published by DC over the years. Of course, superheroes get more pages than anything else, but they also cover things like romance comics and horror comics. Movie and television adaptations of DC Comics properties are also covered. Very well produced book that should appeal to anyone with an interest in comic books.

4 out of 5 stars Attractive corporate history.......2005-10-05

This is a beautiful coffee table book, thoroughly illustrated and full of much fascinating trivia about comics. When reading it, though, it's important to remember that the book was fully approved and virtually coproduced by DC Comics, and so basically represents DC's PR department view of its history. For example, it mostly rationalizes or dismisses the company's appalling treatment of Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. For history, there are non-corporate approved books that do a much more realistic job. But for beautiful pictures and an overview of the comics themselves, this is great.

4 out of 5 stars History of comics, cartoons, movies and television versions .......2005-04-07

The best description of the power of Superman as a cultural icon is the answer that former science fiction writer Isaac Asimov gave to the question: "How is it possible that Superman is capable of flying faster than light?" His answer was, "Einstein's theory of relativity is based on theory, while Superman's powers are based on fact." While Asimov's answer is of course presented with tongue in cheek, it does demonstrate the influence Superman has over our lives. He, along with Batman, have been the primary characters in the DC comics group of characters.
However, the DC comics group has featured many different characters over the years, and even the main characters have undergone dramatic changes. This book is a recapitulation of those characters as well as their origins and in some cases their demise and rebirth. Even Superman was once killed by a super villain, an event that made national headlines. Many people considered the death of a hero to be intolerable, yet the issue where Superman was killed sold more than any other issue that was not a premiere issue. Unusual and short-lived characters such as Deadman, the Creeper, and the team of the Hawk and the Dove are mentioned.
If you are serious about comics, then this is a book you must read. The television and movie incarnations of the comic heroes are also included. Until I read this book, I never realized how many different television series and pilots featuring DC super heroes have been created. Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman have all been the star of one or more television series. While some never progressed beyond the pilot stage, others are timeless. Even though the special effects are weak when compared to what can now be done, the strength of the characters still makes the Superman series starring George Reeves well worth watching

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the world of DC Comics........2003-08-31

Buyers beware, apparently this is an updated edition of Les Daniels' earlier book, so don't fork out the money if you already own the earlier book, unless you think 16 pages of new material is worth the price. Otherwise, this is an excellent introduction to the world of DC Comics. It summarises the history of most of the major DC characters, from their humble origins to their glory days and beyond. Much more so than Marvel characters, DC characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Justice League have, over the last half century or so, worked their way into the very cultural fabric and the psyche of the American public. With the advent of globalisation, their influence now extends well beyond the shores of America into the wider world - just show anyone in Australia, which is on the opposite side of the globe, a picture of Lynda Carter in her star-spangled costume, and they can tell you that she is Wonder Woman. A great reference for all comic book lovers, especially fans of DC characters.

Although the content still rates 5 Stars this edition has been deceptivly marketed and doesn't.This is essentially a reprint of DC Comics :60 Years from 1995. Ok it's an updated edition with 16 additional pages but that's only printed on the back cover. If you liked Les Daniels work on the first book you can easily be suckered into buying this edition online thinking it's a new book. It's not!

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best..........2005-03-02

This book was OK, but not as good as I hoped. There were a few slight changes that the author made, which kind of confused me.
Well, in the story, there's a villian named Outback Jack, and his sidekick is a sock puppet. (Not so original, considering that Awful Alvin, another villian in some other books, has a lamp as a side kick). There's a file they steal from the newspaper office that tells them about treasure map on the face of a clock.
But, at the beginning of the book, Larry is called Lawrence once.
Not that I don't like the name, but the nickname Larry seems to make more sense for him. Also, the author played around with Larryboy's secret identity (Or secret identities in this book)
which confused me a lot.
This book is good. I read it sometimes. It's just that the other books in this series seem to make more sense than this one. Most things are much different in this one than in the others.

3 out of 5 stars Um..........2004-10-20

Now, don't let this review fool you.

I love the Larryboy books, and the movies!

However, this book didn't really measure up.

This is the only book that I wasn't really sastified with. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy it. Larryboy is adorable, and Pruneman is a good addition. There are even a few inside jokes. (In Chapter 15, for example, Larryboy shouts to "three scallions". Trust me, if you've seen VeggieTales, you'll get it.)

However, at the end, it didn't seem fully fleshed. Outback Jack was not exactly, in my opinion, a very interesting villian. He's neither scary nor very lovable, which is a problem because every other villian has been either one or the other. Not to mention the bad guy whose sidekick is an inanimate object has been done before! (See the Awful Ear Wacks Attacks.)

The plot seems a little strange. Maybe I read it too fast, but it didn't seem to make much sense.

Is this recomended? Well, it depends. If you want to read every single book in the series, go ahead. Anyone who doesn't care about reading every book can skip it.

The back of the book says:
Jack Donovan needed a vacation, not another dangerous assignment from the elite paramilitary Shey Group. But this mission was personal- Piper Payne, the sassy girl who'd grown up next door, had been set up and marked for death. A fiercly protective Jack vowed to keep Piper safe at any cost, only to discover that the twenty-five- year -old virgin was hell-bent on seduction. Somehow he'd have to keep his mind on the job and his hands off her never-ending curves. Because he couldn't afford to make mistakes, not when their lives- and his heart- were on the line.

I enjoyed watching the girl go after the guy in this book. She could hold her own in the fighting and there were some interesting, and unexpected, scenes which required them to be more daring than most. Truly an enjoyable read, although the ending seemed a bit rushed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful record & pics of events for future generations.......2004-07-02

This book is filled with inspirational and heart-breaking stories of many of the heroes from the 911 tragedy. True stories of courage, sacrifice and patriotism are accompanied by moving color photographs of the Twin Towers in Manhattan, rescue workers and search dogs, fire fighters, and memorial tributes to the many lives lost. A great historical record and timeline of the events and the aftermath. A must-have for every American's library - so that we and our children, and future generations will NEVER FORGET! The reviewers who saw this as sappy and politicized must be a cynical and jaded bunch. These things happened to REAL people. No political agenda here. The rescue workers and ordinary people were the heroes-that's who this book is about.

1 out of 5 stars Republican party propaganda?.......2004-06-04

This book appears to be nothing more than a Republican/Administration attempt at politicizing the tragedy of 9/11. If you were to flip through the pictures, you would think the only politicians responding to the tragedy were President Bush and Rudolph Juliani.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It.......2003-10-24

This book appears to have been written by the Administration itself... it's terrible.

The stories are sappy. The photos are of poor quality. There are brands smeared throughout.

Don't buy this. It's made for idiots to show their idiotic guests.

    5 out of 5 stars A touching tribute.......2002-09-09

"America's Heroes" gives a stunning look at the heroes of September 11, 2001. From the firefighters, to the people aboard united flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, these people are all considered heroes. And you can't forget the rescue dogs who practically worked themselves to death, trying to find somebody alive amongst the rubble of the World Trade Center.

This book is lasting tribute, filled with pictures, not of the buildings burning or the towers collapsing, but of the New York City firefighters & police officers, soldiers and of people mourning the loss of a loved one. It also features an excerpt from President Bush's address to the country on 9/11, a timeline of the terrorist attacks and stories about the people there that day.

This is an extraordinary book that every American should own so we will always remember the courage and the bravery of those everyday citizens who lost their life or risked their life trying to save another soul and didn't think twice about it.

    5 out of 5 stars A classy, well-done, tear-jerker.......2002-01-16

By far, this is the best book about 9/11. The stories in this book about the heroic rescue efforts in New York and DC are amazing. This book will be considered a classic in the years to come.

    Product Description

Without warning, a huge map of the world appeared in Loren's mind's eye. Loren blinked, but the map was still there. Soon it was covered with ocean waves beating on every shore. Then the waves turned into the faces of young people flowing over every nation. Was Loren being given a glimpse of the future? If so, what part was he going to play?

Ever since he was a young boy dreaming of writing "God is Love" on the moon so that all the world's people could see it, Loren Cunningham has committed his life to reaching the whole world with the Good News of Jesus Christ, ministering in every nation on earth.

Through his unswerving belief that nothing is impossible for God, Loren's vision of waves of young people became the reality of Youth With A Mission, unleashing young Christians in missionary service when that was unheard of. Today, through the mission he began, multiplied thousands of believers- young and old- are working together to bring the gospel to the whole earth.

1 out of 5 stars The story of a man who followed after God, no matter what........2005-12-14

This book tells the story of a man who, at age 13, heard the voice of the Lord, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel." He was also given a vision of waves of young people carrying the Gospel into all nations. He actually did preach in every nation, before he was 60. He formed a missions organization called "Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and saw thousands of young people carry the Gospel to almost every nation, and the story of God's supernatural enabling in all this is very exciting. What an encouragement!

4 out of 5 stars Janet & Geoff Benge, Christian Heroes Then & Now: Loren Cunn.......2005-04-25

This is one of twenty-five biographies written for juveniles by the Benges for the Christian Heroes: Then & Now Series, and published by YWAM. Interestingly, of all the subjects of these volumes, Loren Cunningham is the only one still living. One wonders to what extent his inclusion in this group is due to the fact that he founded YWAM in the early 1960s, and whether the volume might not have been more appropriately placed in YWAM's International Adventures series, all of which deal with contemporary missions work.

Loren Cunningham offers a bibliography (at p. 219) noting Cunningham's own works (co-authored with Janice Rogers)- Is That Really You, God? (1984), Making Jesus Lord (1988), and Daring to Live on the Edge (1991). Several of the people and events covered in other YWAM books are also mentioned in passing. The refitting of the Anastasis (see pp 182-84), for example, is treated in Jeannette Lukasse's A Cry in the Streets (2002), while Floyd McClung's work in Amsterdam (see p. 190) is covered in greater depth in McClung's Living on the Devil's Doorstep (2001).

The Benges' book serves as a useful biography of Cunningham's life to date. The subject has had an undeniable impact on missions in the latter part of the 20th century and this work is accessible to both juveniles and adults. Like most works in the hagiographic tradition, its focus is on the positive, and the fact that it is published by YWAM could raise questions as to its impartiality. While the definitive biography of Loren Cunningham's life has yet to be written, the fact that the Benges were not content to rely exclusively on secondary materials, but went to the trouble to interview their subject (see p. 219), means that their work will play a role in any subsequent discussion of YWAM's founder.
