    Book Description

I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers, but what about pizza? It is three in the afternoon and the man slowly rolling out of bed next to me with a slice of pepperoni pizza stuck to his back is none other than...Ace Frehley from KISS.

I realize to the average person this might seem strange, but it is business as usual when you are with Ace. There was no telling what you could be a witness to. Ace was a vampire, staying up all hours of the night. I would only find out about all of the mischief he had done during the night after we ate our afternoon breakfast. At first, I really couldn't figure out how he did all he did on so little sleep. But who knows how they do things on planet "Jendal".

Sometimes, in a moment of rare sobriety, I would wonder how I got myself into this position. I was a small town girl in her twenties who had never even seen cocaine, only drank on occasion and who had never experienced a "one night stand" or a sexual liaison with a married man. Well, I am about to tell you how it all happened, how I got sucked Into The Void... With Ace Frehley.

    Book Description

From acclaimed New York Times bestselling fantasists Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman comes the spellbinding conclusion to the epic adventure of wonder, courage, magic, and ambition that is the breathtaking world of the Sovereign Stone.

Over two hundred years have passed since the mystical Sovereign Stone was shattered and the world of Loerem faced its most dangerous test ever—the rise of the dark lord Dagnarus. But now Dagnarus has stirred from the Void and seeks the utter conquest of all Loerem. Leading a seemingly unstoppable horde of bestial, powerful minions and a host of insidious undead, Dagnarus captures mortal kingdom after mortal kingdom, until he stands before the very gates of New Vinnengael, as traitors within the city plot to yield the crown to the undead lord.

In the darkness and turmoil that follows, all heroes must first master their own fears and weaknesses before they can take up the fight to stop Dagnarus, and the company spreads across many lands to face many perils. Mortally wounded by a Blood-knife wielded by an undead Vrykyl knight, the Baron Shadamehr lies dying, and even the many skills of his beautiful, beloved Alise may not be able to save him. Others face desperate journeys through hostile lands and difficult tests of character. And, unsuspected, a deadly Vrykyl stalks the pecwae Bashae—and his precious burden, the human portion of the Sovereign Stone—through the streets of New Vinnengael.

Yet the gods have their own plans for this imperiled land, and drawn by an unknown call, the Dominion Lords head for the Portal of the Gods, the mystical, haunted site of Dagnarus's terrible treachery two hundred years beforehand. For if all the parts of the sundered Sovereign Stone can be reunited, the Dominion Lords can stop Dagnarus's unholy plans for domination. But one piece is still missing. . . .

As the past and present converge in a desperate race to determine the future, an unlikely hero will arise. A man who will become far more than he ever dreamed possible and who holds the fate of all Loerem in his hands. And to save Loerem he must venture into a realm of utter terror and darkness . . . into the very blackness of the Void itself.

4 out of 5 stars Great series, poor ending. Worth buying though........2005-11-15

Poor ending, though the series was excellent... I'd say that it would be normal to be disappointed by the ending. The entire story build up to that very point and it wasn't as earth shaking as the authors would have you guess. However I did think the adventure there was actually worth the price of getting the entire series!

4 out of 5 stars A stunning conclusion to an epic tale.......2005-08-19

This book is the third and final instalment of the Sovereign Stone Trilogy capping another wonderfully created world by Weis and Hickman. Wies and Hickman have a knack for bringing home the story at the end of trilogies. I've read some authors where the third book is the worst in the series. Not the case here. This book finishes up the story in grand fashion and I can honestly say that I wouldn't have ended the story any other way.

This world is unlike their Dragonlance books in that they have complete control over what happens and it's noticably a little darker than their other works.

The story during the Sovereign Stone Trilogy moves along at a break neck pace. There are multiple twists along the way. I thinkt he thing I like best about this trilogy is that the 'villian' starts off as a good guy for the most part, but with misguided ideals. He doesn't really know he's being evil he thinks he's doing what's best.

Overall, if you are a fan of Weis and Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles of Death Gate cycle you should give these books a chance. The world if fresh and different from most that is out there today.

If you're ready for a new journey, jump aboard and get ready for a fun enjoyable ride.

3 out of 5 stars Ashes To Ashes, Dust to Dust, Portal To Portal.......2005-05-19

The conclusion to the Sovereign Stone Trilogy, the predicatively-named Journey Into The Void, follows the path of the sundered stone through Loerem and back to the portal of the gods.
Book three focuses on the abominations called taan and their subservience to the lord of the void Dagnarus and that race's interaction with humans, elves, orken and dwarves. As the level of violence ratchets up, Dagnarus' ambition of ruling the world draws nearer. For 200 years he has plotted the moment when he would fulfill his ambition and walk in the footsteps of his long-departed father King Tamaros. His moment seems assured. Much like its two predecessors, however, Journey Into The Void relies too heavily on simplistic coincidences and twists of fate to be fully convincing. The ending, in particular, seems rudimentary and anti-climatic, although Dagnarus' musings about being a just ruler who will bring prosperity to his subjects are an intriguing contradiction to the linear fable of good versus evil. In the end, the irony is not enough to erase an inadequate ending. A partial redress is left to new and complex characters like Captain Of The Captains, Alise or Baron Shadamehr, but sadly they are stifled in these environs. That will have to do however.
Every rose has its thorns. In this case, the thorns manage to overwhelm the story.

2 out of 5 stars Might as well finish it..........2005-02-14

The most positive excuse I can give for reading this book, is if you've already read the first two, it's not too painful to just go ahead and finish this one too.

That being said, this book read like it was writting to fulfil a contract, with no particular insight or imagination going into the telling of the story. The actual climax was such a letdown as to be almost insulting.

The overall story seems to center around a great cruel joke that the gods play on the people of this world. Giving them a "gift" that they state up front will throw the races into war and chaos. Then three books go by trying to get the stone put back together so the gods will take the damn thing back. Gee, thanks gods.

There was also a very odd juxtaposition of the typical fantasy races. I know it's not written in stone or anything, but the deliberate trashing of traditional racial attributes was very distracting. i.e. Orcs, are an intelligent, if superstitious, seagoing race. Elves are a petty and warlike people. Dwarves are a fanatical horse riding culture. If you're going to mix things up that much, why even start with the same race names. Just make up new ones, it would work far better.

If you didn't start this trilogy, trust me...skip it. If you've already read the first book, stop there, it stands alone anyway. If you read the second, you might as well finish it.

3 out of 5 stars A Decent End to the Sovereign Stone trilogy...........2005-01-04

I am a huge fan of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. But this Soveriegn Stone Trilogy has been at best a so-so fantasy story. Book 1 was more of a prequel, Book 2 seemed to get lost in itself, and Book 3 finally puts it all to rest. This is not their best work. But it did remain interesting throughout. The ending is a bit of a letdown and it seems that any chance of some intense action is dispelled quickly. I would not really recommend this trilogy to a friend when there are simply better fantasy stories to focus on out there. So only read if you read the first two. Then put it on the shelf to gather some dust.

      Book Description

A prominent practitioner, an influential theorist, and an esteemed educator, the architect Peter Eisenman today stands at the center of architectural discourse and debate. This book, a companion volume to Eisenman Inside Out: Selected Writings, 1963–1988, gathers a generous selection of his later writings. In these texts Eisenman undertakes theoretical analyses, close readings of his own works, and innovative assessments of the designs and writings of other architects and critics.

In a major introduction to the volume, Jeffrey Kipnis looks closely at Eisenman’s approach toward language and writing, a practice in which architecture itself becomes a form of written theory, as well as at his context within a critical canon that includes Jacques Derrida and Rosalind Krauss. Presenting the range of Eisenman’s important contributions to architectural theory, this collection of nineteen essays provides insight into the architect’s own understandings and methodologies and offers provocative challenges for his readers.

3 out of 5 stars Review of "New Frontier, Book 2".......2002-07-19

Peter David is, without question, the best author of Star Trek books that there is. His "New Frontier" series is a delight to read, with excellent plot, characterization, humor, and competent writing.

That being said, (and as I said about the first book of this series) this book wasn't really one of his better efforts. Granted, his "off day" is better than most writers' best, but still...

We're two books into the series, and still, it feels like we're just setting the table. I'd really like to have seen more happening by now. And again, we end on a cliffhanger, something that I really hate. (Honest, I promise I'll buy the next book without a cliffhanger ending if the writing is good, and if it isn't, the cliffhanger isn't going to help, because I won't CARE what happens next.)

Also, and this is just a personal preference, but I've always HATED the character of Shelby, so I could have really been much happier if she wasn't involved, but at least she's mostly being used for contrast between the "cowboy" Captain Calhoun and her own straightlaced, annoying self. I hope David doesn't start working at making her TOO sympathetic a character; I really DON'T want to start liking her.

Definitely worth reading, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. Hopefully, things will start picking up in the next couple of books.

5 out of 5 stars The Journey Continues.......2001-03-20

This sequal to the House of Cards has made me a true fan of the New Frontier series. The story is great, as well as the characters, that are both from previous Star Trek tv shows and from past books, or just new from Peter David's head. Be sure to have the next book ready to go.

4 out of 5 stars THE ADVENTURE CONTIUES!.......2001-01-28

The second book in series follows straight on from where book one left off. This is great book for many reasons, it introduces an old enemy for Si Cwan as well as giving us information on his missing sister, and the interaction between Kebron and Cwan is absolutley great. This book has all the ingrediants for a perfect Star Trek story, action, humor and intrigue but it still feels that the story still hasn't kicked off yet.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation.......1999-12-22

I was very anxious to read this continuation of the first book in this series. The only thing that let me down is that he left me hanging, waiting to read the third book.

5 out of 5 stars Polished THIS one off in one night!!.......1999-01-25

It's only 150 pgs, and needs to be more!! Can't wait for this future installments of this new series. Peter David has always been able to bring action, humor, and good characters together into a fast-moving format. And an interesting cliff-hanger at the end....

        Book Description

The last two decades of psychoanalytic discourse have witnessed a marked transformation in the way we think about women and gender. The assignment of gender carries with it a host of assumptions, yet without it we can feel lost in a void, unmoored from the world of rationality, stability and meaning. The feminist analytic thinkers whose work is collected here confront the meaning established by the assignment of gender and the uncertainty created by its absence.

The articles brought together in Psychoanalytic Reflections on a Gender-free Case: Into the Void address a cross-section of significant issues that have both chronicled and facilitated the changes of the last two decades of feminist psychoanalysis. Difficult issues which have previously been ignored (such as the pregnancy of the therapist or sexual abuse regarded as more than a fantasy) are considered first. The book goes on to address family perspectives as they interact and shape the child's experience of growing up male or female. Other topics covered are the authority of personal agency as influenced by the language and theory of patriarchy, male-centered concepts that consistently define women as inferior, and the concept of gender as being co-constructed within a relationship. Thus the authors explore the notion of gender identity as an ongoing negotiation among multiple gendered selves.

The gender-free case presented here will fascinate all psychoanalysts interested in exploring ways of grappling with the elusive nature of gender, as well as those studying gender studies.

5 out of 5 stars A Great and Original Addition to the Star Trek Universe.......2004-12-28

Peter David is perhaps the best writer of Star Trek fiction out there -- he has written many of absolute favorite Star Trek novels, Imzadi among them. In creating the New Frontier series, David breathes new life into a stale series that has been tied to the vision of Gene Roddenberry or the producers of the television shows. Not the case here. David mixes old and new characters to create an exciting story that is both original and true to Gene Roddenberry's vision. Among the new characters introduced Captain Calhoun is probably the best captain to sit a starship since Captain Kirk. He has many of Kirk's qualities, but also the leadership skills of Picard and Sisko. Peter David surrounds Calhoun with some old ST:TNG characters and new faces like Bourgoyne-172, a Hermat (hermaphrodite). Burgoyne-172 is the kind of charactes the TV producers would have been too scared to tackle. Overall, this book is a great new addition to the Star Trek universe.

5 out of 5 stars Just Be Open For Change.......2003-08-21

Usually I think of Star Trek as what mankind can do if it put it's mind to it. A utopia where anything is possible... If you are any of the following you might want to reconsider your those views and put them on the side before reading this series.

Peter David, has introduced a Hermaphrodite main crew character named Lieutenant Commander Burgoyne 172, she is the Cheif Engineer of an old Ambassador class vessel.. (Enterprise 1701-C was the same vessel class.) So far he/she has the hots for Dr. Selar... but I won't say more. If you can't tolerate this kind of writing in a story this novel is not for you.

Than there is the new Captain a brave Kirk-Sisko like character.
Mackenzie Calhoun. This man does not follow the tradition Starfleet by the book approach when you get into book 3 of this book, you will see why. I like this Captain only because he has a willingness to fight and or do the very unexpected when the odds are impossible.

I do not wish to go into the rest of the characters. I will say this... Peter David is a master Sci-Fi, writer, when he writes you can almost tell when he's having fun and when he's just writing... I like the inside jokes that Peter David writes.

If you are a TNG fan... You will like this novel. If you are a TOS fan you will like this novel. I have just ordered the rest of the series... I hope you all consider this a good novel.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek New Frontier A New Ship, Crew & Mission.......2002-11-23

This review is in reference to the turtleback, ISBN: 0671019783 and the four paperbacks.

        Book One: House of Cards
        Book Two: Into the Void
Book Three: The Two Front War
        Book Four: Endgame

Peter David being one of the best Star Trek authors throughout its history is rewarded with his very own series. I can only imagine how honored he must've been to be able to create a whole new series. Tasked with this, he stepped up to the challenge and exceeded even his own high standards. One of the main things I love about the whole New Frontier series is that Peter David is allowed more freedom with what he can do in the New Frontier series as opposed to one of the other lines. The only question I have about the first four books of this series is why is the series started off with four small books, when this clearly could've been accomplished with two books or one large hardcover? Either way, who cares, they're all four of them absolutely fantastic!

Just like Star Trek The Next Generation's "Encounter at Farpoint," Deep Space Nine's "Emissary," Voyager's "Caretaker" and Enterprise's "Broken Bow," the four book set or the turtleback containing all four is Peter David's introduction to this great new series! "House of Cards" starts off with the introductions to several of the primary characters. It also includes some great cameo appearances as well. Captain Jean Luc Picard from the USS Stargazer inspiring M'k'n'zy of Calhoun (Mackenzie Calhoun) to join Starfleet. Lieutenant Soleta is introduced to the series through a chance meeting with Ambassador Spock, consequently saving her life. And finally, the ever dreary Admiral Jellico makes his first of many appearances. Commander Elizabeth Paula Shelby from STNG's "Best of Both Worlds" is given a first name, a nickname and a history with the new captain. Ensign Robin Lefler and Dr. Selar are brought over from STNG as well. Dr. Selar's introduction is extremely interesting.

New to the world of Star Trek we're introduced to: Captain Mackenzie Calhoun formerly M'k'n'zy of Calhoun from the planet Xenex. Captain Calhoun is certainly one of the best new characters added to the world of Star Trek. Zak Kebron, who is the USS Excalibur's Chief Security Officer. He is a Brikar, a race of beings who are basically built like large, moving landmasses. Lord and later, Ambassador Si Cwan, one of two remaining members of the ruling family of the Thallonian Empire, which has collapsed. Which is the cause for Starfleet sending the USS Excalibur into Sector 221-G. Commander Burgoyne 172, the Excalibur's Chief Engineer. Burgoyne is a Hermat, which is a species where each individual is pretty much made up of both sides of the battle of the sexes. An particularly interesting character to say the least. Lieutenant Mark McHenry, the Excalibur's primary helmsmen, an exceedingly intelligent and of course, eccentric human.

Mix all of these extremely interesting characters together with Peter David's well thought out villains and what we have here is an enormously great line of Star Trek novels. The only downside, they are more or less in episodic format and have a tendency to end with To be continued...., and they're not a regular line coming out with several per year. The upside, with one exception, they typically come out two or three books at a time. If you purchase the turtleback containing all four stories, it includes a Star Trek New Frontier Minipedia. Overall this is a great series that will make a fine addition to your Star Trek collection!

5 out of 5 stars Note-Perfect Pulp for new Star Trek crew.......2002-07-11

If you like Star Trek, and you like Peter David, you can't go wrong with the first four books of "The New Frontier", his introduction to Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the rest of the crew of the Excalibur. I was hooked on David's writing through his classic "Grey Hulk" series of Marvel Comics. I find his prose and wit stands out from the crowd (though they did bring in some good writers for the original Trek book series).

These first books in the ongoing "New Frontier" series are classically organized, developing the characters in their individual threads and then bringing them together on the Excalibur for a unifying adventure in their new territory. There's very nice balance between characters and a breezy pace. The Star Trek comics, er books, have a little more leeway with asides that you don't get in the TV shows or movies. With Peter David writing, the often serious tone is punctuated with comic relief. The time and place is set around the time of the Next Generation, with Jean-Luc Picard and even Spock putting in an appearance.

Just to be clear -- these books read like comic books, or like a Star Trek episode. It's pure pulp, but pulp of the highest order. One word of warning: these "books" are barely novella length; it takes about an hour to read each, and that's if you read the funny parts twice. All in all, just as Star Trek should be.

        BRAVING THE VOID
        Journeys into Healing

        Book review
        By
        Dr. Stephen J. Faulkner
        Duncan, B.C.

For physicians and health care workers who are interested in Energy Healing and holistic approaches to health care, this book is a landmark work. Dr. Michael Greenwood's second book "Braving the Void - Journeys into Healing" is a well written, easy to read account of his experiences and insights as a physician and acupuncturist at the Victoria Pain Clinic.

Physicians in primary care reading this book will immediately resonate with some of his ideas on chronic pain and chronic illness. For example, the discussion of the doctor-patient relationship and the increasing trend of modern medicine to practice by protocols and algorithms using "evidence based" treatments is very relevant.

"To suggest one form of treatment is good for all people in all situations seems patently absurd, yet physicians have allowed fear to provoke them to abandon their inner strength and relinquish their authority when dealing with patients"

The concept of the void, which was initially developed in his first book, "Paradox and Healing", co-authored with Dr. Peter Nunn, is one that is best experienced to be appreciated and understood. Having experienced the void myself in therapeutic situations it is something I believe all holistic physicians and healers must experience and enter into periodically to be fully aware of what is happening both for themselves and their patients. Michael Greenwood has embraced this belief and, together with his other staff members, has developed a model for energy healing for conditions as diverse as chronic back pain and chronic fatigue, to breast cancer and multiple personality disorder. Other areas I found extremely interesting were the case histories on phantom limb pain, electrical burns and shamanic possessions.

Dealing with these "energies" can be extremely fatiguing and at times frightening, and Dr. Greenwood has been very modest about his experiences. He should be considered the James Cook of the human psyche, beginning to chart new continents and oceans of human energy, which have been previously "Terra Incognito" to western minds. His medical training is the navigational equipment required to prevent him landing on the rocks and his skills as a humane physician and acupuncturist the gift that provides safety through the gale-force winds and ocean storms.

This kind of work, dealing with chronic pain and the failures of so many other "so called" orthodox treatments also brings up the shadow work that a healthy society must engage in for its survival. As Michael suggests, our health care system is all too ready to focus on the "light" and "positive" aspects of our culture but reluctant to approach the "dark" or "negative" aspects. This is not the kind of work for the faint-hearted. A willingness to explore one's own shadow side and belief system is essential if one is going to navigate the unpalatable places of the client's psyche. Fortunately for us, there are pioneers like Michael Greenwood who are giving us frameworks to work with such as the void from which we can springboard into the unconscious material that lies stored in the body/mind continuum.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to all health care professionals involved in holistic and energy healing.

5 out of 5 stars Dr Greenwood breaks new ground at the frontier of medicine.......2001-11-14

Braving the void clearly and vividly describes how our memories are not only stored in the brain, but are widely distributed throughout the body. This has important implications for illness, since post-traumatic stress disorders can be deeply stored within this body-mind memory system, and may be expressed as intractable symptoms such as chronic pain. This memory storage system may be viewed as a holographic field or pattern of energy. "Unblocking" the abnormal energy pattern can restore health by releasing the memories. During this process, the patient can enter a space termed the "void", where the abnormal patterns of consciousness are exposed and released.

Dr Greenwood uses various techniques such as acupuncture, forced breathing, kinesiology, and massage to release the memory patterns. He provides fascinating case histories of patients who were suffering from chronic pain, and other manifestations of ill health, being transformed back to wellness through manipulation of the body-mind systemic memory system.

This is an excellent book for healthcare professionals who wish to learn more than they were taught at medical or nursing schools, and for patients with chronic illness and pain secondary to past physical and psychological trauma. I highly recommend it.

Compared to any of the other books situated in the Dungeons and Dragons universes, I have enjoyed the Spelljammer stories quite thoroughly. I recommend this book highly to anyone that likes Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Darksun, Greyhawk, or Planescape.

5 out of 5 stars "When I hunger, I will eat its brain".......2004-08-17

Into the Void, is the second book in the Cloakmaster Cycle series, which consists of six (6) books in total. Picking up from where Beyond the Moons left off, the book sheds light on Teldin Moore and his quest to find out more about the magical cloak he carries and somehow be free of it.
This time, the gnomes are much more serious and in control than in the previous book where they were simply pathetic and overly chaotic. This of course could have been done on purpose in order to support the possibility/notion that space faring gnomes are quite different from "dirtkicking" ones.
Moreover, there is much more information provided regarding the Spelljamming world. A lot of this material could have and should have been presented in the first book through Gomja, since it is not that complex/difficult/advanced material, even for one as "simple" as the giff. Anyway, better late than ever as they say...
The plot as a whole is excellent! The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Moreover, Nigel Findley does a great job of presenting the distinct culture and civilization of the space faring peoples. He has done a great deal of research in order to provide such an accurate and lucid description of these people.
Illithids, neogi, space battles, intrigue, betrayal, and swordfights are all about.
In addition, there are some new and interesting races/creatures like the Arcane (very Star Trekish) and the space sharks that spice up things.
Furthermore, there are strong elements throughout the book of both Star Trek and Babylon 5, therefore Sci Fi fans should really get a kick out of this one.
On the negative side, there are some questions from the first book that are left unanswered: a) Why/how Teldin can understand foreign languages (it is obviously the cloak, but has Teldin picked up on it)? b) Why did he seem as being a draconian to the draconians while at the SAME TIME as himself to humans (there must be some kind of magic from the School of Illusion at work that has not been explained).
No answers there; hopefully that will be dealt with in one of the other books further down the line.
Furthermore, Estriss is presented much more like Zoidberg from Futurama as opposed to the dreaded mind flayers that we're all used to. He's just too "nice." As a result, further explanation should be given as to WHY Estriss is not like the other mind flayers!
Finally, towards the end of the book, a "charmed" Teldin has little trouble convincing Aelfred with no evidence whatsoever, and who up until then had been a model for loyalty, and who has known Teldin for only a couple of months, to mutiny against Estriss, whom he's known and worked for, for years. This one is a bit far fetched...
I recommend the Spelljammer Campaign Setting or any other Spelljammer accessory to supplement the material, and/or provide visual aids to the reader in relation to helms, ships, creatures/races etc.
In conclusion, Nigel Findley does a FANTASTIC job of establishing a cliffhanger for the next, third book in the series. Into the Void is strongly recommended to all Spelljammer and Forgotten Realms fans, as well as all Fantasy enthusiasts.

4 out of 5 stars Into the Void (Spelljammer Books).......2000-04-04

In this exciting, action packed book, Teldin Moore, the adventurer/farmer from the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons world of Krynn (Dragonlance), is plunged into space and must head to the world of Forgotten Relms. On his way he faces many parils and meets up with an Illithid, a race of octupus-men with wonderous psychic powers. I though this book was wonderful and a sure read for any fan of Spelljammer or fantisy for that matter, or anyone who likes to stay up all night becouse they can't put a book down.

This is a AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH PROPULSION DIRECTORATE report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A853653. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The one-dimensional, inviscid equations of motion are applied to the problem of describing the shock and rarefaction wave which form when the flow of a perfect gas from an infinite reservoir into a vacuous main is initiated. Characteristic theory is applied to show that the rarefaction wave is a centered, simple, backward-facing expansion wave. It is further shown that the stagnation temperature is a strict function of the local sound speed in the domain of this wave, and that the sound speed has a fixed, distinct value on each of the straight characteristics of the wave. The Rankine-Hugoniot Relations are used to show that the shock coincides with the greatest lower bound of characteristics. The local sound speed monotonically decreases to zero as the limit of characteristics in the wave domain is approached, resulting in the stagnation temperature monotonically approaching its maximum value there. It is deduced that the stagnation temperature function described in this report represents the thermal spike observed during the establishment of flow in a short-duration test facility. It is concluded that the thermal spike is the artifact of the flow work done to form the shock at the initiation of the blow- down process in such a facility.
