Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for teachers.......2007-09-30

I received the book and it is just what I wanted....a great resource. I teach Language Arts in Junior High and I wanted a list of graphic novels to guide me in my purchases as to suitability and content. It has certainly provided direction.

2 out of 5 stars Childhood Dreams.......2007-07-22

The main problem with this book is the list itself. There are far too many books aimed at children and teens, and not enough for the mature reader. The author seems to have stopped reading the latest books, and is trapped by the classic, easy insertions. How can you leave out "Road to Perdition" and "A History of Violence" ? Sure, Spiderman and Superman are fine, but both of these are more comic book and less graphic novel. The term Graphic Novel has moved beyond the superhero stage.

5 out of 5 stars would strongly recommend this for any reader, teacher, librarian, teacher educator, or parent with an interest in comics.......2007-04-15

As an educator trying to get a handle on graphic novels and comics in literacy education, this was an excellent starting point (along with Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art). The selections, descriptions, and rating were helpful and accurate. It's been an excellent guide.

The entries are listed alphabetical by author, and I only wish that there were alternate indexes (by ratings or subject). However, it did force me to expand my initial interests...not a stress for a brief book.

I would strongly recommend this for any reader, teacher, librarian, teacher educator, or parent with an interest in comics or graphic novels--it can introduce you to a variety of titles or expand your existing readings.

5 out of 5 stars Give this book a try.......2007-02-02

This book was written as an introductory guide to the the world of graphic novels because graphic novels and comics have become such an intregal part of mainstream culture in recent years. While noting the best books, I worked hard to balance the variety of types of graphic novels published for different audiences. If you do read this book, you'll probably discover some real gems as well as plenty of good graphic novels. You'll also get ideas on what to read next.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-12-02

I thought this would be a list of adult grahic novels, like those of Harvey Pekar. A few were, but many were for children or comic book collectors. I do not think some of them really qualify as graphic novels. From the term "your library" I understood my own personal library, but seems it is for public librarians serving a mixed public. Fine, but I did not see that in the editorial description.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough detail.......2005-01-12

In the spirit of graphic novels, this pamphlet (since it is scarcely large enough to be called a book) uses very few words to describe the top 101 graphic novels of all time.

And that is the problem. I'm sure the internet is full of opinions on the graphic novel "canon". I wanted something MORE than just a bibliography, sorted alphabetically by author.

Each book has no more than a four sentence summary with a rating to suggest whether it would be suitable for kids, youths or adults. I would have expected:
* author/illustrator bios
* ratings for plot, characters, design, artwork etc
* ranking of the books in order

Any connection between the attention span of a typical comic book reader and the brevity of this book? You can draw your own conclusions.

If you're interested in the different visual techniques of storytelling, check out the Scott McCloud or Will Eisner books on the subject.

Very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Great for newbies.......2001-12-27

Weiner's book credibly describes some of the medium's most important works. It could be a good starting point for those who haven't read comics in many years or perhaps for parents looking to find something to engage their kids. It's also a fine, quick read for those who already know about the industry, offering a few surprises and lesser-known gems.

5 out of 5 stars You Should Give this Book a Try.......2001-12-22

The world of literature is rapidly changing. Today people are
bombarded with numerous entertainment formats that were not available in past years. The comic strip has adapted readily
to these changes and has grown. There are numerous sophisticated
graphic novels that prose readers might enjoy, even treasure,
if exposed to them. Further, there are several graphic novels
that do not feature superheroes that might well be enjoyed by
superhero readers. I wrote this book to alert the general
public and the comic book reader to these changes in this oft-
maligned form of communication. This book is intended to help you see an old media a bit differently.

4 out of 5 stars Although not the best collection ever produced, this book is a fine sampling to any fan of the rude little guy.......2007-08-05

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Andy Capp (the first drawing was published on August 5, 1957), I'd like to officially express my admiration for this comic strip, possibly for the very first time.

At first eye-sight, Andy Capp does not give the impression of being anything extraordinary. I was introduced to this thoroughly unsympatethic bum when I was ten and liked him immediately, which puzzled many in my surroundings. Indeed, the strip is hardly a children-comic and seen in retrospect, I believe my first interest was mostly established due to the amusing drawings and funny characters; honestly, there were times when I thought the strip was pretty nasty. I kept liking it, though.

What is it, then, that have made this character so popular? Andy Capp is not one of those comics which everybody originally avoided but which eventually received cultural status. No, Andy Capp was an immediate hit; only a couple of years after his first appearance in The Mirror, he was already a commercial icon. And his popularity did not diminish, even though the times changed and he eventually had to give up smoking.

Andy Capp's popularity remained because behind its simple construction, Andy Capp is, in fact, an intelligent comic strip filled with at times VERY clever (and hilarious) dialogue. Being a Norwegian-born, I only read translations of the strip for years, but I eventually began to read it in its original language as well, and then, BO-OM! I can recall many occassions when I had to stop reading in order to write some of the jokes down. Being a cartoonist myself, the strip taught me a lot about the timing of comics and use of language. I'd like to come up with examples, but really, they are best seen on paper.

Perhaps even more significant, though, is the complex relationship between Andy and his wife, Florrie. In most comic strip marriages, the family atmosphere is almost without exception either wonderful or horrible. In Bringing Up Father, for example, Jiggs and Maggie might communicate with an "acceptable" tone once in a while, but this is always disturbed by Jiggs' self-absorbness and Maggie's intolerance. In the same way, the idyllic life in Blondie is perhaps interrupted by a few arguments, but the family is a healthy and lovely one. In Andy Capp, on the other hand, sarcasm and fighting take the largest part of the couple's time, but Florrie frequently smiles apologitically while she, most often indirectly, explains to the readers why she tolerates Andy's misbehavior. To a large extent, she seems to accept the rude comments from her husband and much suggests that she actually loves him, which is further made clear by the "pet"-naming.

This book, THE NEW ANDY CAPP COLLECTION NO. 1, mostly consists of new material published after the death of Reg Smythe. During the last few decades, Andy Capp has softened considerably and the new cartoonists have not fully succeeded in following the brilliant characterizations which were part of Smythe's strength. However, the drawings are almost impossible to differ from the originals, and I chuckled a lot while reading the recent strips as well. Andy Capp-fans should certainly add this book to their collection, especially since it also offers some strips by Smythe's hand as well. But newcomers to this wonderful comic strip should be warned; there are better publications to mark their interest with, namely the sadly hard-to-find ANDY CAPP THROUGH THE AGES.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Capp, a Little Cleaned Up But Still Insufferable .......2005-02-07

The original Andy Capp, created by Reg Smythe, was a dialect-speaking wife beater, a loathsome but very funny human being. The modern Andy speaks in standard English and doesn't pound on Flo (though she pounds on him--reverse sexism?). But he's still as insufferable as ever, and this new, updated strip is a delight.

Just don't reform any more, dear old reprobate!

Book Description

You May Not Tie an Alligator to a Fire Hydrant is a collection of the 101 dumbest real federal, city, and state laws in America, compiled by Jeff Koon and Andy Powell, a couple of high school seniors with a Web site visited by hundreds of thousands of browsers every month. These laws will astonish, possibly outrage, and certainly amuse citizens everywhere.

Here you will learn that forgetting to close a gate is against the law in Nevada; that flying a kite is illegal in Schaumburg, Illinois; and that shaking carpets in the street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is strictly forbidden. You probably haven't tried cutting off your arm to make people feel sorry for you -- but if you live in Alabama, it is against the law. Many Texans will be surprised to learn that their hoes must be no less than four feet long. Perhaps more disturbingly, Indianans will be forced to recognize that being sexually aroused in public could get them arrested. With so many potential legal pitfalls around us all, it is comforting, finally, to learn in these pages that, in Alaska, the people who make laws have sagely concluded that emergencies are "held to a minimum and are rarely found to exist."

This hilarious compilation features forty-six original illustrations by award-winning artist Ward Schumaker that brilliantly capture the absurdity of so many of our laws with a light and elegant touch.

WARNING
These laws, all verified by the authors and presented along with a reference to the corresponding federal, state, or city statute, may cause readers to lose any desire to pursue a career in law.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-03-01

The authors have found a couple of really dumb laws, but most of the book features unusual scenarios that the authors create that are technically illegal. The title is an example of this. The law actually states that the fire hydrant should not be blocked by anything- so yes, it would be illegal to tie the alligator to the fire hydrant. But is that really a dumb law? Each page features one law and the authors comments. Not much substance to this book.

1 out of 5 stars A Good Idea That Needs More Work.......2003-09-15

This is a book by two kids. It started off as a school project. The idea is to list laws that seem very strange, dumb or just plain off-the-wall. It could have been a good book but it needs a little more research.

Each page has a catchy phrase about some law. The title of the book is one such phrase. There is then some of the text of the law it refers to. Unfortunately, sometimes the blurb is actually the direct opposite of the law given. I found this to be really unforgivable in such a book. Very often I got the idea that the authors just didn't understand the language used in the laws and sometime I felt they never read them in the first place.

Still, there are some dumb laws that they did get right. But really, there should have been a lot more attention paid before this ever saw print.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2003-07-05

Sorry guys, but this is the dumbest book I have read in a long time. I bought it thinking it would be good beach reading and, boy, was I wrong. Being eaten by seagulls would have been less painful than enduring this drivel. A little thought into this project would have proved helpful as many of the laws quoted were instituted for very good reasons such as the law regarding ice cubes in El Paso. Do you want to buy ice cubes that were produced across the border with their stellar health regulations. Most books of this type are quite entertaining, but not this one. It's just plain stupid.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice! Words to live by!.......2003-01-24

I thought I was doing the nice folks a favor when I tied my dog Snuckles to the fire hydrant while I went into the 7-ll for a slushy and a ding-dong. However to my horror, when I came out of the store I found an alligator swallowing my dog. He then got his head and teeth stuck around the leash. Before I could do anything a police officer came up to me and asked if that was my alligator tied to the fire hydrant. I told him that I had never seen that alligator before in my life. He then asked me if that was my leash and I told him it was. Unfortunately, just then a fire broke out across the street and the fire trucks soon arrived. However, the fireman couldn't get to the fire hydrant as a vicious alligator was guarding it. The whole building burnt down and I was arrested and charged for tying an alligator to a fire hydrant and blocking a fire hydrant that was needed during a fire resulting in thousands of dollars of damage.

While I was in court, even though I had argued that the alligator was not mine, it was proved by the prosecutors that it was mine since I had confessed to having my leash on it. In the end I was fined $500 dollars and sentenced to 100 hours of community service and forced to read this book.

Without a doubt, had I read this book before, I would not have had to read it now in humiliation after failing to take Jeff's advice. Had I known I could have lied about the leash being mine. Good advice Jeff but a little too late for me!

By the way, the alligator and I are now doing fine and I've adopted him as a pet. Poor Snuckles.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-07-28

hilarious... worth buying and reading over and over again. see down for mirinda's review. it sums up my thoughts exactly.

I really enjoyed this little book, easily read in one sitting. And even better, I asked my husband to explain some terms used, which got us talking sports together, like just what is a 3-6-3 double play? Drawings are terrific. And I actually learned something, always a plus. A keeper. A gem from page 108: "Good pitching always beats good hitting and vice versa." Credit Pittsburgh Pirate lefty Bob Veale.

        Product Description

The comic-spawned Spider-Man franchise, despite its “pop” status, demonstrates important trends in literature. It raises numerous key questions for developing a better understanding of literary elements and devices. How, for example, do writers involved with the franchise reconcile divergent plotlines and characterizations that appear in multiple serials, and in a number of concurrent depictions of the hero in comic series, television series and films? Readers may be surprised to realize that Shakespeare grappled with similar topics in his Henry VI series, and, for instance, in the character Falstaff’s reemergence from death in The Merry Wives of Windsor. This textbook inspires a greater appreciation for literature by studying important literary themes found in comics. By deconstructing comics, it raises critical thinking about literature, a crucial skill for understanding language and composition. Chapters discuss DC, Marvel and other comics’ varied attempts at portraying race, politics, economics, business ethics and democracy; responses to the Cold War and the events of September 11; and portrayals of prisons and capital punishment. Each chapter offers a series of questions that stimulate further reading, writing and discussion. Photographs are included as well.

        3 out of 5 stars Marvel'ously Unique.......2007-02-07

A delightful read for English majors, I should think, as it proceeds much like a very long essay with all the intellectual humor of an "A" student. While sometimes long-winded and repetitive, the publication maintains interest through what is perhaps the most academically under-assessed literary genre in our pop-culture. Kahan and Stewart's knowledge behind comic books and graphic novels impressively highlights the historical, political, social, religious, and sometimes philosophical themes behind past and present forms of the most renowned superheroes. Movies, television series, cartoons, and recreations are all brought out to the challenge of what themes changed and which stayed the same.

Some desireables would be: to improve the organization of ideas and to add more current comic book titles to those reviewed.

With proper permission and research, I think there's room and interest for a sequel.
