Book Description
Dietrich von Hildebrand, widely regarded as one of the great Catholic philosophers of the 20th century, is well-known for his numerous books, but, until this present work, not much has been known of his remarkable and inspiring life. Written by his wife, Alice, also a highly respected Catholic thinker, this is a fascinating, moving and, at times, gripping account of a truly great man of the Church who suffered much for the faith. Based on a very long "letter" Dietrich wrote to his wife late in his life, it tells his story from his glorious youth with a unique intellectual and cultural formation, his coversion to Catholisism, his great passion for truth and beauty, his extensive writing on Christian philosophy and theology, and his steadfast, determined opposition to Nazism that made him a marked man who miraculously escaped execution. A powerful biography of a relentless fighter against injustice, a devoted son of the Church, a man who had the "soul of a lion". Illustrated.

A Lion of the Church.......2001-01-30
"The Soul of a Lion" is a very moving account of the life of Dietrich von Hildebrand, one of the most important Catholic theologians of the 20th century. Since it was written by his lovely wife, Alice, she does not pretend to be an unbiased observer. However, while she clearly writes from a heart filled with deep love and affection, she also recounts his mistakes and character faults without attempting to whitewash them.
Some of the highlights of the book include the sections detailing his very cultured, very European uprbringing; his conversion to Catholicism; and his courageous, outspoken opposition to Nazism, resulting in his dangerous escape to America with his family.
My one disappointment with the book is the ending-- Alice von Hildebrand ends her account with his arrival in the United States. This necessarily leaves untold the story of how the first Mrs. von Hildebrand (Gretchen) died, and how Alice had the great good fortune of meeting and eventually marrying Dietrich. Surely this is another moving tale which deserves to be told! Perhaps, someday, a continuation??

A Great Intro .......2006-05-22
Soul Among Lions is a a wonderful tidbit to introduce the wit, wisdom, prophecy, profanity, and other gems attached to the genius of Will Campbell. The readings are indeed short and crisp--and powerful. My suggestion is to read slowly and chew the cud carefully--you can bet Mr. campbell never utters a word he hasn't savored first.
There are longer and thicker books among the author's impresive canon, and each is worth the journey, but Soul Among Lions sheds a little light on why such a diverse cast of characters, from Thomas Merton to Waylon Jennings and various points in between, have sought out this particular "Bootleg Preacher," sat and watched him whittle down a cedar stick, and perhaps muse a little here and there.
And it is just a taste, but if it stirs your appetite--and it most likely will--then there are other Campbell books waiting to be devoured.
Meditations on truth.......2002-04-26
These are very short meditations focusing on scripture in relation to present day situations. They are meant to tantilize you and begin discussion or thought. This is an easy book to just pick up and read a few pages or sit down and read the complete work in very little time. For me it was a breath of fresh air.
Cliff Notes.......2002-01-13
Each musing (chapter) gets only a few pages. It reduces some of his ideas to no more than: wouldn't this be nice? with no suggestions to make it happen. I was hoping the book would be more like Jim Wallis' Faith Works.
Another gem from Brother Will.......2000-07-25
Will D. Campbell, "bootleg preacher" to the unwashed and unlovable, has penned another book of wonder. Brother to a Dragonfly is viewed a modern classic[as it is}.Soul among Lions is a worthy cousin. Brother Will has stayed busy, stirring up a hornets nest wherever he can, placing a well intentioned burr in the saddle of the powerful. The short, wonderful essays are a goldmine for the comitted christian{though, of course, that statement covers an awful lot of ground}.Read Brother will, then look at yourself. If you are not challenged, read it again. To comfort the powerless and make the powered uncomfortable, and to do it with wit, and poetry.Quite a book, quite a human being.
A gentle reminder that we are all in the same family........1999-05-15
With a gentle poetic nudge, Campbell reminds us that we are all in the same family, that we humans need each other as much as we need to get on with the business of forgiving. This book of short essays that Campbell calls "musings" (and that can be read in less than an hour) asks questions about human frailties and pretenses with love and acceptance and wit. A Southerner of courage and conscience and keen intelligence, Campbell wonders why the Fannye Browns who quietly go about doing good for others are forgotten while the Trent Lotts and Jerry Falwells seem to go loudly about doing good for self. Campbell muses that the national angst about homelessness can be assuaged if each church congregation takes just one homeless person into its care. He wonders about the motives of the Christian Coalition and simply asks that we look beneath the surface to find our common humanity. "Soul Among Lions" will give moral courage to the reflective reader. This thought-provoking book is the sort to purchase by the dozen to send as gifts to friends and one's elected officials.

Wonderfully down to earth observations........1999-07-02
I recommend this book to all persons interested in lions in the America's. It will appeal to and educate people with diverse opinions on the management of this wonderful species of cat. Mr. Shaw is not only a good biologist, he also tells it like it is, and in a well written way. I especially hope that North America's wildlife decision makers will read and heed Mr. Shaw's conclusions about lion management. This book is for the biologist, the rancher, the lion hunter, and the preservationist.

Chamberlain is great the book is dull.......2001-08-29
It has been several years since I read Soul of the Lion. However, although the Civil War years of Chamberlain are quite interesting and alive, the rest of the book is quite dull. Chamberlain's remaining days in Maine and Florida are just not very interesting reading. I attribute most of this to Wallace's weakness as a writer.
A fitting tribute to an outstanding General and Soldier........2000-08-15
This is an excellent book by Willard M. Wallace that was first written in 1960. It begins with the family background of the Chamberlain family and its historical roots back in Europe and then goes to the birth of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and details his life story, in which many triumphs and tragedies happened. While this book was written in a "romantic glossy tone", it is an excellent resouce for material about this gallant soldier and his contribution to save the Union at Gettysburg and Petersburg
A man of immense intellect Chamberlain spoke many languages and was a gifted writer and poet. His natural leadership abilities was an inspiration not only to the students at Bowdoin College in Maine, but also to the 20th Maine on the hard fought day of July 2, 1863. This man quite possibly saved the Battle and thus the Union with his suprising and daring charge down Little Round Top thus suprising the men of the 15th Alabama and the rest of Confederate General Evander Law's Brigade.
A true leader, as the book points out, Chamberlain was elected Governor of Maine and in later life was a great speaker at many GAR Reunions.
This is an excellent book and highly recommended to anyone who wants to know more about the brave and amazing Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.
Very good biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.......2000-06-19
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain is one of the greatest American military heroes of all time. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his courageous leadership of the 20th Maine Volunteer Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, thereby ensuring his place in history. "Soul of the Lion," by Willard M. Wallace, is a well written biography of Chamberlain. With clear and lively prose, Wallace chronicles Chamberlain's early life and career as a professor at Bowdoin College; his rise from command of the 20th Maine to general officer rank in the Union army; and his unfailingly heroic performance in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, including Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Five Forks.
Wallace also details Chamberlain's post-Civil War career as Governor of Maine (1867-1871); President of Bowdoin College (1871-1883); and unsuccessful businessman. Especially interesting was how Chamberlain, as commander of Maine's militia, saved the state from violent anarchy during the 1880 gubernatorial election.
Despite being well written, "Soul of the Lion" doesn't quite approach the depth found in the best biographies of military leaders. I would have especially appreciated more detailed information concerning Chamberlain's relationships with his family members. This is only a minor reservation, however; "Soul of the Lion" is a good basic survey of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's life, and a highly recommendable book about one of the great Americans of the 19th century.
A Classic Biography that Stands the Test of Time.......1999-12-11
Although John Pullen recently wrote a biography of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Willard Wallace's 1960 classic remains a highly readible and informative gem. This was an era of great writing about the Civil war, including Bruce Catton's Centenial trilogy and the first two volume's of Shelby Foote's masterpiece. Wallace's writing is equally lucid and his coverage is vast in scope. He devotes nealy as many pages to Chmaberlain's post war career as he does to his heroic years as the Colonel of the 20th Maine and later General. We all know of the heroics of Bowdoin professor (turned military leader) Chamberlain on Little Round Top but he also was instrumental in the final battles near Petersburg at Five Forks and Quaker Road. Despite being wounded (for what seems to be the umpteenth time) he went on to rally his troops. After the war he went on to serve a governor of Maine and President of Bowdoin College. His Presidency of Bowdoin was progressive but troubled. Quite simply, his innovations were ahead of their time thus opposed by many in the Bowdoin community. In politics, he was independent, answering to no bosses and as head of the Maine militia, he put down a near inserection, after a disputed election, without calling out his troops. This is a great book about a great American. I highly recommend it.
Common man with an extraordinary life as soldier & statesman.......1999-01-10
The biography of Joshua Chamberlin is about a common man who had an extraordinary life as a result of a seminal event at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was a professor in Maine who decided it was his duty to serve his country. He had no military training, but became one of General Grant's most trusted generals. He fought in some of the most terrible battles in the war. For his courage at Gettysburg by turning the Confederates flank on the Little Roundtop with a bayonet charge, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. After the war, he was Maine's governor and statesman until his death. A truly inspiring life story.

When C. S. Lewis published The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe he created one of Christendom's most cherished allegories. Viewers of the movie, as well as readers of the book will come away deeply moved by what they have encountered in Narnia. They will have countless questions such as: How did the Witch take over Narnia? Why couldn't Edmund resist temptation? Why did the Lion have to die? And they will find the answers in this wonderful book written for Christians and non-Christians alike.

Easy overview........2005-12-31
This book was an easy and quick read. It is really only intended as an overview of LWW and Lewis and the debate between "good" fiction/fantasy and "bad". For the Christian who is interested in this issue or somone only casually familiar with C.S. Lewis or LWW it is a good read. If you are looking for more of an in-depth theological treatise...probably not for you.
An Average Book on a Great Work.......2005-11-13
One reviewer commented that this book is preachy and didactic, of which I must agree. This is not always a "bad, but in this latest book by Gene Veith, it becomes at times, a rabbit, going into non-needed areas. This happens most when he is discussing the differences between C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling. I have never read a Potter novel, and didn't like the first movie that my teenage daughter dragged me to, but I must say, too much sensitive American Evangelicalism is apparent in his dealing with the subject (I must concur with Vieth in that he anticipates both a pro-con review of his position on Potter). While not as overly anti-Potter as other fundamentalists and evangelicals, I think he still misses the boat. I think children "get the books" like children get Narnia.
The opening of the book is pretty much average. It does work well as a study tool for a small book-group or study group. He does make some good points and while I think most of the points he raises are obvious to C.S. Lewis fans.
His critique of Pullman and "His Dark Materials" raises the bar on this book. What was a below average review on Potter is elevated here, but his average opening on Narnia itself, regulates this book to an average read on a great work by Lewis.
Excellent book for Christians who love fantasies.......2005-11-02
Whether you agree with him or not, Veith knows how to make a Christian think. I happen to agree with him, though. I've read most of Veith's books, and I was not disappointed by this one. I thoroughly enjoyed it, learned valuable things I didn't know, and highly recommend it to all Christians who love fantasy literature, and to all parents whose children love fantasy literature.
The Dearth of Veith.......2005-10-15
I'm greatly disappointed. Having read other work by GEV over the years, this is hasty and generalizing. It is also preachy and didactic--and if you don't get my negative connotations of those two words, then this book is probably one you will appreciate.
As a fan of both JK Rowling and CS Lewis, I hoped for an intelligent discussion of similarities/differences between the two. Instead, we receive false assumptions and poorly supported arguments. One example: Rowling has said that she never intended HP to be categorized as "fantasy literature." Yet that is one of GEV's primary arguments against it--that it is inconsistent with the rules/expectations of fantasy.
Another example of weak argumentation from p. 162:
"This is a major difference between The Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter books. Though Harry comes back to his miserable life with his Muggle family between terms, his true home is with the witches. In Narnia, the characters (with one important exception at the very end of the series) come back to their families, and their true home can be found in ordinary life."
First, Harry's home is with the "wizarding" community--a much truer way of putting it (within Potter-world), but GEV chooses the HOT word "witches." Shame on you! Secondly, we are told several times in the Narnia books that the children (and others) frequently gather together to talk about their adventures, leading one to think that their "ordinary life" was much less satisfying than their life in Narnia.
If you are new to Narnia, or need a supplement to your Bible study culminating in a trip to the LWW film in December, or need confirmation that HP is inferior literature, this book might meet your needs. Otherwise, I don't recommend it.

Now I Know Why Editors Are Reputed to be Drunks........2005-01-17
Critiquing a formulaic MacHack'nSlash is hardly worth the effort and besides, it's unsporting to snipe at such easy targets. These things are written to fulfill a publisher's specs, and this one is further hampered by being quite dated. Concepts which were quasi-trendy when it was published seem doddery and flaccid now. The protagonist apparently belongs to the political party known as `twit', that is, he's written with the political savvy of a not terribly bright public schoolboy, and he's coupled with a Jesus martyr complex. *Yawn.* Not appealing. But it was meant to be a quick read, a bit of slumming for the brain.
So why do I bother complaining about this one rather than dropping it and moving on to another one? Because the writing itself is so infuriatingly awful and my temper snapped at finding yet another author who believes that writing requires no skills whatsoever beyond a desire to produce a near schizophrenic mash of words.
Fantasy and science fiction offers writers a wonderful chance to demonstrate a vitality and love of language, as well as to take conceptual risks within the stories. It's a shame when it's plodding and lifeless.
Heart and Soul both fit for the gods!.......2002-06-20
This is one of seven books in the Fifth Millenium series by Wehrstein, SM Stirling, and Shirley Meier. It falls concurrent with The Cage (Meier/Stirling) and Shadow's Son (Meier/Stirling/ Wehrstein) in the timeline of a post-Apocalyptic world filled with moral dilemmas, sweeping destinies, magic, politics, and swordplay. Every book in this series is wonderful, but the two books about Chevenga are extra-special.
Indulge in "chiravesa" (a yeoli philosophy of "being the other") for a moment, and be Chevenga: by the time he was six years old, he knew he had a choice between early death (before the age of thirty) and everlasting glory, or an obscure life and the end of his people. What would you choose? What would any hero choose? But glory doesn't come without a price for Chevenga, beyond the guarantee of early death, and his sufferings and challenges in the two books (Lion's Heart and Lion's Soul) are enough to make one weep.
His time as a captive arena fighter and slave to the Imperator of Arko should give plenty of satisfaction to those who enjoy good descriptions of swordplay and the struggle between a slave and master; the romance he has with a beautiful gladiatrix should please the love-addicts among readers; the politics and intrigue are worthy of George R.R. Martin (if rather more condensed).
An added bonus from this series: it teaches responbility and caring in a way that many parents no longer do. It shows that being a hero doesn't necessarily mean flash and daring, but rather courage to do what's right even when it hurts, as well as considering all sides of an issue before making a decision. It encourages people to grow and change for the better. In other words, it's normal fantasy literature! Yet there will be those out there who complain that it's not a Christian book, or that it teaches Devil-worship (like the much-maligned Harry Potter books, just because they mention magic), or that it will cause people to do drugs or enjoy same-sex love... All I can say to those folks is, when you shut wonder and beauty away from yourself because you're afraid it might teach you something different from your world view, you also shut yourself IN, and miss the things that make so many book wonder-ful!
I actually didn't mean to go on a rant, there, I'll just end by saying this: The only bad thing about these two wonderful books (the entire wonderful series, for that matter) is that they are out of print.
REPRINT!.......2001-03-05
I agree wholeheartedly with the reader who reviewed the other book by Wehrstein in the Fifth Millenium series! I don't think any other fantasy-series (my personal collection of SF and fantasy has reached some 500+ titles by now) has ever affected me like this series, and as amazingly good as the rest of it is ("Shadow's Daughter" by Shirley Meyer, "Snowbrother" by SM Stirling, "Sword and Shadow" and "The Cage" by Meyer and Stirling, and "Shadow's Son" by all three) these two ("Lion's Heart", "Lion's Soul") by Wehrstein are without a doubt the very best of the lot. The first book describes the hero, knowing from an early age that he will die young at the hands of an assassin and that there is so much he must do before then, growing up in a most fascinating fantasy (actually it's post-nuclear holocaust) society, dealing with some of the other beautifully desribed fascinating cultures and ending up as a gladiator when taken prisoner by the... need I say it?.. equally fascinating baddie empire. The second book describes his escape and the war he leads against this empire, his attempts to reform the society of that conquered people, and finally his death (you'll feel the tears well up when you read that part!). The agonies and trials he suffers during these two books makes one wonder if Ms Wehrstein really enjoys torturing her hero but it only touches the reader even deeper. Why, oh why are these two books so unknown among lovers of SF and fantasy?! Reprint them NOW! Reprint the whole Fifth Millenium series! Find these books, no matter how many used-book shops you have to turn upside down, and read them!
