One of a kind.......2006-12-04
This book portrays the Indian spirit Black Hawk as known to the Spiritualist Churches in New Orleans. Black Hawk is a 19th century Midwestern Indian warrior especially dear to the heart of African-American spiritual faith in the deep South. Black Hawk's following first blossomed in New Orleans sometime around the 1920s through the work of the spiritualist Leafy Anderson. The book has biographical material about both Black Hawk and Leafy Anderson and includes interesting material about several of the spiritualists who came after her and who still keep the tradition alive. The book tells of the way Black Hawk benefits the lives of those who call on him - "He'll fight your battles." - Jason Berry is a fine, sensitive writer. The photos are great, expecially the one of Big Chief Jolly of the Wild Tchoupitoulas taken at the time of Mardi Gras in 1979.
Outstanding.......2006-10-03
This is the only book I have been able to find on Black Hawk and the Spiritual Churches of New Orleans. The author takes you on a journey into the heart of New Orleans both with text and color photographs. The author really seems to know his stuff. I have enjoyed reading this book several times, each time learning something new. The author gives details of the spiritual church movement in New Orleans and throughout the African community. We read about the incorporation of Black Hawk, a powerful Inidan warrior is venerated and worked for the benefit of all, including usual shrines to the Black Hawk spirit. Highly reccomended!

Excellent sequel to Patton Boyle's Screaming Hawk.......2000-07-14
What a great continuance of the journey of this priest, learning of native american spirituality. This text takes us down the intriguing paths of divine circumstance. The medicine man, Flying Eagle sends this priest, Screaming Hawk to places he once had not chosen to go and learn deeply about his own spirituality. Becoming a warrior is much different than he had imagined. There are so many parallels to Christianity. This book is a must for those who search outside themselves for meaning. Meaning is nearer than you may think.

Heartfelt Gift.......2007-08-25
This book is a generous telling of Tela Starhawk Lake's life and training. She shares so much of her personal experience that it is at times painful to read. Very informative about the obstacles to continuing traditional Native practices in a modern world, and her profound determination to continue because of or in spite of those obstacles.
Freaky owls, activism, and triumph over negativity.......2001-07-14
Since i am a Northwest transplant and OBSESSED with native american spirituality i was siked to read this book by a Yurok medicine woman. She gives some sorely needed insight into women's moontime ceremonies, herbs (ANGELICA!), and the meaning of some friendly and foelike animal spirits all over the country. Since i already fell in love with Sioux medicine people, my heart sang when she told of meeting Lame Deer and others, participating in a Sundance, and recieving full healing the Lakota way. I ate this book up.
Hawk woman dancing with the moon was great !.......2000-07-02
I liked Hawk woman dancing with the moon a lot , because it tells you a lot about indian culture and also gives practical instructions if you're interested in moon-ceremonies , for example . Tela Star Hawk Lake talks about her own life (how she became a shaman , different ceremonies , her family ,...) , the life as an indian today and hundreds of years ago , her tribe and tells legends . All in all , I can really recommend this book to anyone that is interested in indian culture ! It's novel and informative book at the same time .

Is a newly revised and edited edition of American Indian Ceremonies. This new edition should be available in late October, 2002.
Excellent Practical Workbook.......1999-01-05
For someone seeking a practical way to familarize themselves with one Cherokee path. Working the Medicine wheel outlined in the book can help one attain not only a Spiritual awareness, but also can help heal past hurts (the healing comes from your work). I Strongly recommend this book for individuals without access to a formal group or for groups without a leader schooled in the Eastern Cherokee tradition. Rather that a revelation of secret indian traditions , this book is is just what it says it is: "A practical Workbook & Study Guide to the Medicine Path".

A practical guide for native shamanism........1998-11-08
This book focuses on the objective aspects of working with the indigenous spirits of the land. It contains much of the crafts-work and skills used in shamanism, such as constructing a spirit pipe, making medicine tools, smudging and more. The Cherokee language is presented, with the syllabary and words. Totems, correspondences of stones, plants, animals, planets, and meditations are covered, and much more ... It's an easy read yet loaded with useful information and clear illustrations, and resource lists. Great book, I've enjoyed it for some time and expect to continue using it.

Highly recommended.......2006-10-11
Ambrose Hawk writes concisely and clearly on a little-understood topic. I could hardly put the book down even to eat, and by the time I finished it, I felt that I had the information I needed to approach scrying with confidence. If you wish to learn scrying, you will not go wrong with this volume.
I wish I had this book when I was just starting out.......2006-01-16
I have been scrying for over a quarter of a century and yet this book was able to teach me new things about my old craft. The best thing about Mr. Hawk's book is that it contains a complete set of instructions. From selecting a scrying device, to preparing it, to clearing it of past influences, to linking it with your own psychic nature, and (most importantly) to actually scrying, this book is solid gold. It is delightfully free of dogma and the writing is clear and easy to understand. "Exploring Scrying" should be in every psychic's bookshelf.
Well Done Subject Matter!.......2005-04-16
I have had the pleasure of knowing and conversing (thru E-mails) with Ambrose Hawk for a few years now. He is a member of my own online discussion group as well as a continued contributor to the online site, A Mystical Grove.
This is a little book with a good solid message. It's about helping you to open your creativity thru the use of an old technique called Scrying. In case you're wondering Scrying is another term used by the Occult community for "seeing that which is yet unknown" usually thru a device of some sort such as a pool of ink, a mirror or crystal to name a few.
The book is chock full of ideas, tips, & hints to help you facilitate a better understanding of what Scrying is and how to use it. While not only helping you discover the future, Scrying also goes to help you learn to focus your mind. This alone is worth the time and effort it takes to learn to Scry.
Another important aspect that is often overlooked on this very subject is the use of Scrying to help one become more creative. For instance, take a problem or challenging situation you're facing and focus your mind onto your speculum with the problem right there in front of you. Let it sit there and allow your mind a free rangeof possible alternatives. You will be surprised at what will pop up! Some of the ideas may not be useful to you at all however, many will be OR can be adapted to be useful!
One of the best chapters in here is Chapter 6 which is about choosing your Speculum - the device used to Scry with. Ambrose discusses the various potentials using the traditional crystal ball and whether you should or not opt for glass or real crystal. He also discusses the pros and cons of a dark surfaced mirror. Then you get him later discussing using wine in a bowl as a speculum.
He goes on to give you some of hs own lessons in exercises and how ritual interacts with the Scrying art. Plus he shares with you some subtle things like what you may see but is careful not to plant ideas in your head which is precisely the thing you DON'T want. Rather Ambrose allows you to make up your own mind.
All in all, I found the book to be useful and insightful. It had an index and biblilography and even had a short bio about the author at the very end. The book doesn't have any redundant material other than maybe basic relaxation exercises but for the most part, it's a complete and fairly tight book on the subject. At the listed price, I felt it rated 5 out of 5 stars of a book on this particular subject. It held my attention and offered much in the way of practical applicatons. Get this one and add it to your collection but most of all, study it and DO the work!
uuuuuhhh ok........2005-01-26
This book is ok, thats it. You can do a search on the internet on skrying and come up with the same stuff. IMHO there are much better books out there on the subject. Here is how you skry: 1. Learn how to visualize anything with as much clarity as possible.
2. Learn how to project these imaginations outside yourself as if they were seperate objects/beings/energies/etc. 3. When you reach a decent level of this take a solid color object (black/midnight blue/red/green...) 4.Imagine object are on surface. 5. continue to do this while building on your ability to *accurately* view things. 6. Skry
If your serious about skrying there are MUCH better books out there.
Totally different view on scrying. .......2004-08-04
Very little reference to magic or metaphysics but that's what makes is so good. It looks at several theories and ways to scry including a lot that are more towards the physchological instead of the esoteric.

Red Hawk puts his intense life experiences in his work........1998-04-30
I have known Red Hawk all of my life & he is one of the most intense questioners of the meaning of life & death on this planet. Some of his narratives relate to his own life directly & some indirectly. He wondrous storyteller.
Finally..........1998-04-23
Finally a book of poems that speaks of my own experience and understanding of the world!! This book and Red Hawk's two previous books are some of the best poetry I've ever read...and I read poetry like a fiend. As a high school English teacher, I am always on the hunt for poems whose literal meanings are clear enough for students to be interested right off but which also offer a wealth of deeper meaning once the surface is scratched--Red Hawk's poems are perfect for this. My students love him and so many have begun reading poetry on their own after this introduction!! (This, of course, is the English teacher's secret fantasy--a world of poetry readers!!) I, myself, am always moved by the depth of the poems themselves and I always notice something previously missed. If you read only one poem in your life, read "For Rain Drop Who Grows Up" -- it is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful tributes to a child I have ever read.
An important & powerful book of poetry;highly recommend........1998-04-16
Red Hawk speaks with such a stunning & plain elegance that his voice can be a help to others. He tells the truth no matter how bad it makes him look. His is a book about honor, love, wisdom, death and how to use all of those as spiritual practice. It changed me; it is a book which matters.
A powerful, thoughtful and amazing experience!!!.......1998-04-05
This beautiful collection of poems follows Red Hawk's stunning "The Sioux Dog Dance." Following a year at Princeton University as its Hodder Fellow, Red Hawk has lost none of his ability to powerfully convey images of beauty and evil as revealed in everyday life. Much of this work is autobiographical and reveals the writer/educator as a self-described "loser" searching for salvation in an ugly world. He has the rare ability to seek and find the truth in the smallest and seemingly most meaningless of actions. With spare and simple prose, Red Hawk turns a perceptive and unwavering eye on the world, as well as himself. THIS IS A MUST-BUY, EVEN IF YOU HATE POETRY!!!

Book Description
The gentlemen of medieval and Renaissance Europe had three all-consuming passions: warfare, courtly love, and hunting with a hawk or hound--and the philosophy behind the last of the trio really encompasses them all. Hunting, the sport of kings, served as training for battle, a rite of manhood, and a powerful ritualistic pastime. In vivid and engrossing detail, here are all the appropriate methods for hunting deer, boar, wolves, foxes, bears, otters, birds, hares...even unicorns! A dazzling diversity of sources (poems, ballads, letters, court directives, royal accounts, gamekeepers' handbooks, psalters) illustrate how hunting and hawking appear throughout medieval art and literature as metaphors and motifs for everything from romance to combat.
Customer Reviews:
John Cummins is a superb historian.......2005-05-18
I purchased this book over a year ago and found after the first chapter that it was uninteresting. Finally, I went back to it and am pleased I did.
The following chapters on the beasts and fowl hunted by hound, hawk and other methods are very good reads. At times the olde English which accounts for about one quarter of the book really are difficult as 1400 English is not modern English, but in saying that there is a definite charm to it being included and it is a thankful reality.
John Cummins unlike most modern historians is superb in easily telling a story when he needs to do his vocation and then sits back and allows the original texts to tell the story. Cummins appears in his work to have an existential experience with the world he is speaking, instead as I stated before with most historians these days who write from cramped apartments smelling of book mold.....Mr. Cummins also pleasingly does not include his ego in writing his opinions. In this book, you see the world through the eyes of era 1400 hunters.
I did find one mistake in his writing as to why a hunter of that period would dress as a huge woodcock, in thinking size mattered. In truth, for birds that are preyed upon, like geese, a decoy 6 feet tall actually has more appeal than a regular size decoy, that explanation should have been secured by Mr. Cummins.
The only drawback, beside the first chapter, was he only wrote a few paragraphs about the setters when employed in hawk and other hunting. As one who has a great affection for the Irish Setter, I would have liked a chapter on the intricate training of this breed.
In relating all of that, this book pleased me as it is historical prose. I will look for Mr. Cummins other books on Christopher Columbus and Francis Drake as I am certain after this book, he will not displease me in reciting history through the words of those in which he records.
Solid and helpful.......2001-07-14
This book is essential for anyone who wants to know about western European medieval hunting. Cummins admirably completes the task of being thorough, with frequent references to and quotations of primary texts. The structure makes the book easy to follow and inclusions of anecdotes and poems makes the reading fun.
This book captures both the practice and the romance of hunting throughout the centuries of the middle ages. It is generous of detail. My one complaint might be that there is little attempt to discuss different practices in different regions of Europe, though the author acknowledges the existence of slight regional variations and does try to delve into them here and there.
It is hard to imagine that any other book on the subject need be written for some time.
Welcome to the world of the Medieval Hunt.......2001-05-12
Over all, an excellent introduction to the world of the Medieval Hunt. Some knowledge of medieval history and/or study is helpful, as the author does sometimes seem to assume you know what he is talking about. Full of vivid descriptions, (especially concerning the chapters refering to "Par Force" hunting) One can almost see the Hunt as it unfolds. The chapters concerning the "Par Force" and the "Bow and Stable" Hunts are excellantly done with much intricate detail covering everything from how the hounds were taken care of to how much the Huntsman made. This section alone makes the book worth purchasing. The section on falconry, I found was not quite so in depth as the "Hounds" section, though it was definately useful and interesting.

Product Description
Arvid Lloyd Williams, author of the acclaimed Hawk's Valley: A Good Place To Die, has teamed with author Bonnie Shallbetter to bring you the long-awaited dramatic sequel, Sophie's Hawk: Spirit of the Raptor.
The Indian wars in Minnesota were declared officially over by the end of 1862. However, bands of hostile Sioux still roamed the Big Woods and the prairies of Minnesota. Hawk and Jake Owen are appointed by Colonel Sibley to search out and rescue a missionary who had been captured by the Sioux. Follow them through hostile Indian country along the Minnesota frontier to Big Stone Lake, through Brown's Valley, around Lake Traverse and into Dakota Territory. Through their adventures you'll meet Standing Buffalo, the friendly chief of the Sisseton band of Sioux, and Little Crow, Chief of the Mdewakanton band of Sioux and reluctant leader of the hostile warriors.
Old friends are reunited and new and interesting characters are introduced, each with his own story to tell, in the continuing saga that is a blend of true-life history, fiction, romance, and tragedy mixed lightly with a dash of Williams/Shallbetter humor. You will chuckle at the antics of Mister Erickson and Grampaw Wells. You ll shudder from the violence of war -- and perhaps shed a tear.
