Book Description

Those extraordinary little events in your life happen for a reason.
A coincidence-sometimes a silly little thing-changes the course of your day . . .
or even your life. Is it chance, or is God communicating with you?

When God Winks at You is packed with true stories demonstrating that God does communicate with us, making incredible things happen in our lives every single day. As you read the riveting accounts of everyday and famous people-including Tim Conway, Rudolph Giuliani, Billy Graham, and Don Knotts-you will begin to recognize the godwinks in your own life, both past and present. Through these tangible signposts from God, we receive personalized messages that reassure us, stop us from worrying, chart our path in life, and help us keep the faith.

When God winks, He is reaffirming that there is absolutely nothing about us that He does not know-our every hurt, our every desire.
And that to me is very comforting

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING READ!.......2007-09-27

This book was an OUTSTANDING read! The compilation of real stories is so encouraging. It is one of those books you don't want to stop reading, so you read small bits at a time to make it last longer! This is a must read and would make a great gift for friends and family. If you aren't a believer in God's hand in your life...or in God at all for that matter - this one will really make you think twice. It's not a religious "corny" book - its real stories, about real people and their very real "God wink" experiences!

5 out of 5 stars A Divine Appointment to Make.......2007-08-13

You don't have a clue about being present until you start paying attention to what's in it. Only for the true seekers of God's will for their life and those who want to be awakened from their aimless slumber. If you're stuck on PRESUMING God's will for your life in stead of standing in faith with the humility to be open for whatever HE may call you to purpose in and KNOWING that it's HIS will, (which is a little more than just a feeling) ...you'll miss it. But for the one who is ready to lay it all down and consider the cost with the price of surrending their life to do what God has and step in faith no matter where it leads...you've got to take this ride and journey through this wonderful sharing.

5 out of 5 stars I've bought 18 copies and intend to buy more -- here's why..........2007-06-16

This little book is a tremendous book to share the presence of God working in our lives. It is a very easy book to read (like eating chips), incidents in various lives of celebrities and ordinary people that are too powerful and miraculous to be "coincidence"... after reading, you become so much more aware of how God has "winked" at you through His actions. It is exciting to suddenly be aware that God is actually working in various incidents in your life. I've given 18 books away so far, and the recipients are excited about sharing their copy with others -- a "pass-along" book. I intend to buy 10 more soon, so I can share with whomever God "winks" into my path. This has become a "book ministry" -- glorifying Him through passing along books.

THIS BOOK IS A GREAT SPIRIT LIFTER. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR ANYONE WANTING TO SHARE SOME INSPIRATION. IT IS A SHORT READ AND WELL WORTH THE TIME

This is a great short read on the miracles that impact our lives every day...many of which we don't understand until years later!

Book Description

It is not by accident that you just picked up When God Winks. Whether you call it synchronicity or coincidence, what brought you to this book today is worth remembering. In fact, you may have suspected all along that there is more to coincidence than meets the eye. These seemingly random events are actually signposts that can help you successfully navigate your career, relationships, and interests. SQuire Rushnell shows us that by recognizing our "God Winks," we can use the untapped power of coincidence to vastly improve our lives.

The author applies his compelling theory as to why coincidences exist to fascinating stories in history, sports, medicine, and relationships involving both everyday and famous people including Barbra Streisand, Charles Schulz, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Costner, Mark Twain, and Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

1 out of 5 stars Quite Disappointing.......2007-09-28

This book was extremely disappointing. I was very excited about it. I've had times in my life when I KNOW the Lord has worked and I was hoping this book would help me be more in tune to the Lord's work in my life and help me see specific situations I may have missed. What a joke!!!

The book seems to be more of a manual for how to use coincidences to do what you want and feel good about it. Many of the examples of "God Winks" lead people to do things that our Lord would not approve of (one example being divorce).

But my biggest complaint is that the vast majority of the author's examples of "God Winks" comes from the rich and famous. I got the impression that the author apparently can not even relate to or understand the work of God in the average person's life. This mistake on the author's part could lead to a reader becoming hopeless rather than hopeful that the True God is working in their life.

I did not come away from the reading believing that the author knew and understood the True God of the Bible, though I did gain some benefit from reading the book. Reading it did remind me that God does work in my life in a personal way and that I need to always be looking for that work - and more importantly that I need to acknowledge, cherish and remember that work.

I would like to share two instances that I know God worked in my life. One could be considered a "coincidence" but the other is just God's work. And both are simple, average examples of the Lord working in an ordinary person's life. They do not describe any life-changing events, but they are God's work non-the-less.

1) My car - a Subaru Justy - was doing it's job getting my family of 5 around (two in car seats!). We joked about it being the clown car because we could all squeeze in and it looked funny; all of us piling out. The driver's side seat belt broke. We called to find out how much it would cost to fix and discovered that we really, really could not afford it, but what else could we do? Days later we received a letter in the mail informing us that the seat belts had been recalled and we could have it repaired at a dealership for free. What a BLESSING! This seems like a coincidence (or a "God Wink") but I took it for what it was....the Lord watching over us and taking care of our needs.

2) Shortly before my grandfather died we made a trip to visit him. He was my favorite person in the world. The whole time we were there (as other times before) I would get on to my boys for being loud and rambuctious. My grandfather would sit in his chair in the living room and seemed to be sleeping. He was very frail. I was afraid that my boys would bother him. At one point the boys came bouncing loudly into the room. As I was about to get on to them and scold them for being loud I looked over at my grandfather. He was sitting in his chair laughing! He was wasting away at the end of his life, yet he was enjoying his grandsons' romping around his house. That was pure gold to me. You can't call this a coincidence. You could call it a "God Wink", but after reading Rushnell's book I have an aversion to that term. God did move and speak into my life, but it was absolutely nothing like what Rushnell describes in his book.

I could give many more boring examples of how God has worked in my ordinary life. They probably wouldn't be as appealing as Rushnell's examples because they weren't coincidences on my path to being rich and famous. But they are real examples of a real God working in an ordinary person's life. And they didn't lead me to do something that God would not approve of, quite the opposite. All of the personal experiences I've had with God working in my life have led me away from sin and toward God.

All that to say that if you believe in the God of the Bible don't waste your time reading this book. Instead spend the time really thinking on and praying about how the Lord has worked in your life. Thank Him for it and rejoice!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a quick read and has a lot of short stories to illustrate how God is making Himself known in our lives. I came away with the hope that the coincedences in my own life really are signs that God is touching my life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best advanced text on the market.......2005-10-06

This textbook is a very detailed and very up-to-date exposition of Neuroscience, and in my view, for the more advanced student it is one of the best books out there. What it is NOT is a simple, concise introduction for people who are studying the nervous system for the first time. If you are taking an entry-level Neuroscience course you are likely to be overwhelmed by the amount of detail, and, like some of the other reviewers who gave this book a bad rap, might blame the book for the fact that you can only take in so much detail in a first sitting, and fail to see the forest for all the trees. So if you are new to Neuroscience, read something like Bear et al "Neuroscience - Exploring the Brain" first, and only once you have absorbed that, turn to this beautifully detailed book for a much closer look at the subject. The chapters on Vision by Clay Reid and the Hearing chapters by Brown in this book are quite simply and without a doubt among the best textbook chapters on these topics anywhere, (and much better than anything you will find in Kandel!)

4 out of 5 stars Most up-to-date text on the market.......2005-03-28

I'm a clinical academic neurologist with an MS in neuroscience some 25 years ago, and I decided to read through this text as a means of bringing myself up-to-date in the field. This textbook accomplished that task admirably. I will agree with some critics that parts of it were far too detailed, especially the sections on molecular neurobiology, where too often things got bogged down with discussions of a protein's biophysical properties, for example. Another caveat is that there are some production defects--the pages around 200 are not in the right order, and I found a few diagrams that were mislabelled. But the illustrations are really gorgeous. I've made extensive use of the CD, which contains all the figures and their legends, for Power Point presentations to the neurology residents I teach. I would suggest that future editions of the CD incorporate some videos and animated diagrams that could better illustrate some concepts, e.g., details of signal transduction, which is REALLY complex and was hard to follow in the text. But Kandels text is now several years older and as the pace of neuroscience is so incredibly rapid, this text contains more of the latest info.

2 out of 5 stars Too detailed.......2002-05-29

This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.
The smart money would go with the Kandel who clearly defines
his purpose at the outset of his classic book.
(I notice that the reviewer ,who bestowed the text 4 stars, and the author both call San Diego their home.)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Fundamental!.......2001-04-22

I was rather lucky to take my chances and go-for-a-buy for this title instead of the much more cited "Kandel-Fourth Edition"... The book is really awesome, well-written and edited, with many good first-time-seen illustrations. It spans the whole field of contemporary Neuroscience (from biochemical to cognitive and clinical) with extreme efficacy and reference. The authors did a great job integrating the contents of each section with clarifying examples and extensive references, making it ideal even for new-comers. As a medical student with research interests in this vast field, I was very pleased with my decision to buy this textbook.

5 out of 5 stars A must in any med-school.......2000-08-20

This book can make any person understand the basic aspects of Pathology, it requires a good level of Histology knowledge ( not more than a good approach of the previous course ). Excellent images and explanations make this issue a good purchase.

The only drawback I've found is the fancy words the authors use to define something it's easy to understand, but after all I think it's a vey good choice.

Book Description

In the past five years, the development of new imaging technologies that make possible faster and more accurate diagnoses has significantly improved the imaging of disease and injury. This new edition of Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology describes and illustrates these new techniques to prepare medical students and other radiology learners to provide the most optimal and up-to-date imaging management for their patients. Not only are new diagnostic techniques outlined, such as the multidetector computed tomography diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and the diffusion-weighted magnetic-resonance imaging of stroke, but hundreds of new diagnostic images have been included to illustrate the radiological characteristics of common diseases with state-of-the-art computed radiography, ultrasound, multidetector computed tomography, and magnetic-resonance images. The text has been completely reviewed and updated to present the latest and best strategies in diagnostic imaging.

New interventional radiology procedures have been added, including vertebroplasty, a percutaneous injection treatment of painful spinal compression fractures; uterine artery embolization, a surgical alternative to hysterectomy in women with painful or bleeding uterine fibroids; and radiofrequency ablation, a percutaneous technique for treating unresectable tumors in the liver and other organs with probes that superheat and thus destroy cancer cells.

A new chapter on advances in diagnostic imaging describes many cutting-edge imaging technologies, such as three-dimensional and digital imaging, functional magnetic-resonance imaging, PET-CT (positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography), cardiac calcium CT scoring, multidetector gated cardiac CT, and molecular imaging.

Review by a medical student interested in Radiology

This book is good if you want a starter to book for radiographic images that encompasses a variety of fields of film study. It was an easy read for each chapters, but way too basic, the author rambles as if you're a 6th grader. So, I only suggest this book if you want only pictures to get an idea of what radiographic films show for some common pathology. The book started with the OVER-SIMPLIFIED anatomy with comparison to the radiographic images. You will need a better book for a more in-depth review of Radiology. There is hardly anything on Neuroradiology, IR, flouroscopy, etc. It was only SLIGHTLY useful for my General Radiology rotation. Plus, most hospitals usually has this book in their library, may be an edition older though.

One think that bothered me about the illustrations were that the lesions were usually not labeled, they were just discussed or mentioned within the illustration's caption or the chapter explanation. The book is pricey for what it contains. It should be worth $40 or less!

4 out of 5 stars "A great book for medical students".......2007-05-15

I's a really good book for those who don't think about being radiologist, an understanding introductory book and it seems that it was speacially done for medical students.
It arrived in just 1 week, and it is fast if you consider that I'm from Peru, the book arrived in good conditions, so I have no complains.
Definitively what i was looking for. A good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars slow to ship.......2007-02-08

Product arrived in great condition but took almost 2 weeks to ship.

5 out of 5 stars I will buy it.......2003-03-26

I am a medical student taking my radiology elective (finally) in the spring of my fourth year. Our department loaned the book to us during the rotation. I've found it to be one of those few books that I will actually purchase to have on my shelf at home (and I'm NOT going into radiology). It is written in a pleasing, conversational manner. The illustrations are of high quality. The discussions are at just the right level for an introduction to radiology. And there are many little "problems" presented throughout the text for the student to puzzle over. The answers are either listed in back, or turn up later in the "conversation" within a few pages. Although it seems long (over 500 pp?), it is mostly pictures. I highly recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars great introduction book.......2002-08-10

It is a very well written basic introductory book. This book is a must for any medical student interested in imaging. To get the most out of a radiology elective, suggest reading this book cover to cover.

FOR EACH,
THERE COULD BE ONLY ONE

They came from the darkest places: secluded monasteries, the Carpathian mountains, galaxies under siege. They were men with the blackest pasts--warriors, vampire monks, leaders of armies--but whose passions burned like dying stars. They had but one purpose: to find those women who fulfilled them, completed them, and made them rage with a fire both holy and profane. They sought soul mates whose touch consumed them, yet whose kisses refreshed like the coolest rain. And each man knew that for him there was only one true love--and in finding her, he would find salvation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Book #11 in Carpathian Series.......2007-08-14

This was a nice anthology of three short stories. All nicely written and fun to read.

1. Dark Descent by Christine Feehan is #11 in the Carpathian series. It's Joie and Trian's story. As far as I know, this is the only place you can get their story.

2. Star Queen by Susan Grant. Wonderful. I found a new favorite author here. Read many more of her books. Reviews coming.

3. Sacrilege by Susan Squires. I liked this story, then went on to read another of her books that, quite frankly, shocked me. It was "The Burning." My review for that one is coming soon. I didn't read anymore of her books after that.

4 out of 5 stars Tooooo Short.......2007-06-27

I have to admit I was curious how 3 authors(only one of which I had previously read books by) could write one book...I did not realize they were 3 short stories and am glad for it but dismayed as well. The three stories were each well written...full of detail and romance and intrigue, HOWEVER, they were too short. I enjoyed reading each but felt myself longing for so much more and for each to be a full length novel. I particularly felt the ending to Christine Feehan's Dark Descent left too much open and hope to have that story continued. Susan Grant's The Star Queen atleast included an ending which made it more bearable when it was over. Susan Squires Sacrilege left me wanting to read a book about Pietr and his rise, fall and rise again so hopefully he will come to life, so to speak, in another book. I have read two of her previous books, Sacrement and One With The Night...her characters and storylines always beg to continue on...I like that Julien and Sarah were brought into this short story as I found myself craving more of them after One With The Night ended.
I recommend The Only One for those who love romance winning against all odds and for those who prefer short stories and even for those who will like me, wish there were more pages for each of these stories to be had.
Linda

5 out of 5 stars The Only One.......2007-01-12

I picked this up because I am a fan of Christine Feehan. I had not read anything by the other authors at that time. After reading this, I would definately read more by them and I am totally hooked on the dark series. I would recommend the series to anyone who is hooked on Vampire stories with some romance thrown in. The characters are larger than life and a thoroughly enjoyable read.

good short story and opens up other's as well

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment galore.......2006-09-16

When I bought the book I thought...Wow! But as I began to read my excitment turned to disappointment. The first story is a repeat of the second story in Dark Prince, the second story was all over the place and I counldn't get into it, and the third? Yawn!!! I love Christine Feehan's work but I would not have bought this book if Ihad known the contents.

Since this is a book of mini stories it made for quick reads. I wish they were full stories though so each story could be extended some, they left you wanting to know more of what happened after the story ended.

Until Death Do We Part by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Esperetta, daughter of Vlad Tepes, was on her way home when her escort was attacked by the Turks. Her savior, Velkan Danesti, took her to his home to care for her and while she was there, they fell in love and married. Esperetta's father had vowed to see Velkan dead. Velkan's family has disowned him because of his marriage to their enemy's daughter. Esperetta and Velkan devised a plan to fake their deaths so that they could leave the country and live in happiness. Their plans go awry and both end up dead. Artemis revived Velkan after he agreed to become one of her Dark Hunters and because the souls of both Velkan and Esperetta were joined in magic, Esperetta lived (after a fashion) with him. Because of seriously misunderstanding a few events, Esperetta and Velkan separated, hating each other. Five hundred years later, they meet again, both still hating the other. Can they get past their anger to once again find a love meant to last forever?

Although Until Death Do We Part is a good story, the five hundred year separation of Velkan and Retta really didn't seem all that believable, especially when Retta's companion, Francesca, was added. I simply couldn't see Francesca completely giving up seeing her family and all hope of finding a mate for that amount of time.

Ride The Night Wind by L.A.Banks

Jose has found a way of staying out of the gangs in East L.A. without being killed for not wanting to join. Jose is a very talented artist that does any artwork that the gangs want and they pay for it. Jose's mother hates the fact that he's both an artist and that he does jobs for the gangs. Juanita has finished high school, but has given up her dream of going to business school to help out her family by working in a pharmacy and taking care of her home, as well as raising her little brother. She resents that her mother loves her drug dealing big brother without reservation, but treats her like a servant that she doesn't even like. Jose and Juanita meet after being attacked by something evil. Can two people, although very much attracted to one another, stay together with so many things against them?

Ride The Night Wind is the first story that I've read of the Neturu Guardians, and I can tell you that it certainly won't be the last! Jose and Juanita have so many things fighting to keep them apart, although because of their separate destinies, it does take a while to get together. I absolutely loved Ride The Night Wind with its action, danger, love and passion all woven into a wonderful paranormal story. All of the characters feel so real that I felt like I could reach out and touch them.

The Gift by Susan Squires

London, March, 1820

When Major Vernon Davis Were was in El Golea, his embassy was attacked by a horde of vampires. Everyone was killed, all but him. When Asharti decided that she wanted Rufford, Davie was finally released from his slavery to go back to England to summon Rufford back to North Africa. Rufford went back to Asharti and killed her, now he's asked Davie to come back to help in the fight to destroy the vampire army that Asharti has left. He doesn't want to go back for several reasons, among them, he wants to stay well away from the place that, for him, was a living hell, plus he's about to ask Lady Emma Fairfield to be his wife. Feeling guilty that he was the one to send Rufford back to the hell that is North Africa, Davie leaves England and Emma to join the battle against the vampires. Little does he know that Emma refuses to give up the man she loves and follows him. Now both Emma and Davie are in danger of losing their lives.

I love how Ms. Squires has created her vampires. The Companion is a unique way to explain their vampirism. I adore Emma, Rufford, Fedeyah and Davie. The Gift is a fascinating story that I enjoyed greatly and I will be searching for more of Ms. Squires' vampire tales.

The Forgotten One by Ronda Thompson

Having lost her parents through an accident, Lady Anne Baldwin was taken in and raised by her aunt and uncle. Craving the love that she had lost through their parent's deaths, Anne does her best to be no trouble to the couple that never wanted children so that she can earn their love. When Anne meets Merrick, the new stable master, she is completely attracted to him and ends up not acting at all like herself. Anne's one rebellion is her love of horses. Merrick helps to build her self-confidence and in turn Ann falls deeply in love with him. There is no way that a noble heiress can be with a servant...or is there?

The Forgotten One is a tale that stole my heart. Anne is a shy, but strong woman and Merrick is deep down, a caring and sexy hero that is perfect for her. When Merrick changes after the first time they make love, Anne showed both him and me just how strong, stubborn and loving she could be. The Forgotten One is the perfect feel good end for this anthology.

Love At First Bite is a completely wonderful anthology that brings together love, passion and danger with very different, yet complimentary authors and their unique stories. For lovers of paranormal romances, Love At First Bite is one you should not miss!!

This story wasn't worth the money or the gas to drive to the book store to get it! This has got to be the worst Dark-Hunter story yet. I love this series but SK is just drowning for stories anymore. How do you clear up 500 years of misunderstanding in 70 pages??

The story was not believable in the least, neither character was fleshed out or likeable and the setting was dismal. SK used the history of the Turks/Romanians and Shakepeare's Romeo and Juliet in an attempt to flesh out the background of this story in order to fit it into 70 pages.

Not worth the money or the time to read it.

Book Description

In The Children Are Free, Rev. Jeff Miner and John Tyler Connoley offer a comprehensive yet easy-to-read examination of the biblical evidence regarding loving same-sex relationships and God's attitude toward them.

In Chapter One, the authors lead the reader through a discussion of each of the six passages traditionally used against gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. In their friendly and authoritative style, they demonstrate how an anti-gay interpretation is a misapplication of these scriptures.

Then, in Chapter Two, Miner and Connoley turn our attention to the biblical stories and passages that affirm loving same-sex relationships. Did you know Jesus once met a gay person? Jesus' loving response is just one of the well-researched stories presented in this chapter.

Chapter Three asks readers to take seriously the call of Jesus to think more deeply about biblical rules. And Chapter Four calls Christians to action, making a connection between the conflicts in the early Church and those occurring within the Church today.

This book belongs in the library of any Christian questioning the role of Scripture in the lives of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, or the role of GLB people in the Church.

5 out of 5 stars Simple book delivers profound insight.......2007-09-01

This book is for those who wish to find out the truth about what the Bible REALLY says about homosexuality. It isn't for those who want to read it in order to disprove it. It is for those who need a clear, concise and Biblically sound response to the major scriptural passages concerning homosexual expression. Approach the book with an open mind and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you. Don't come to it with your preconceived ideas, even if you're supportive of gay people. Let something fresh come to you from this book, because it has the power to do that. It is infused with God's character - love, humility, sound reasoning and clarity. It has something to say to the church if only the church would open their ears to listen.

5 out of 5 stars A book that answers the question it asks........2007-08-05

This book is biblically sound and addresses both the clobber passages so often misquoted on same-sex relationships and other passages not normally considered as speaking to this topic. I have recommended this book to many of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars This book doesn't leave you with a cloud of suspicion over your head.......2007-05-20

I have read over 20 books on the subject of homosexuality and every one of them left me feeling they weren't being completely honest or they were relying on speculative historical data. Many books on this subject are looking for loopholes or excuses. This book is so straight forward and honest. The authors remind us over and over again that we need to be careful what questions we bring to the bible: in this case "Is a relationship of two people of the same sex possible and can it be blessed by God?" The Children are Free is very simple and very clear.

This book, as well as "Calling the Rainbow Nation Home" and "A Time to Embrace Same Gender Relationships in Religion, Law and Politics" are the 3 essential books that I would recommend to any person of the Christian faith who is truly struggling with the issue of homosexuality.

Just the thing I have been trying to find!
Both solid scholarship, faith-insight and wrestling,
but also timely and provocative.
Thank you, Amazon, for making this book so readily available
to the interested public.
I sincerely hope more people will get this book
and study it, inch by inch, line by line.
I did not realize how un-faithful I have become concerning
this topic.......needed to have my biases challenged by one
who really cares deeply about this subject.

3 out of 5 stars if only..........2007-05-13

The first half of this book should be available as a pamphlet! It was a wonderfully done examination and explanation of how one can read the Bible, believe in it, and still not condemn homosexuals.

But the second half ruins the whole thing. In the second half, they spout Spong-ian anti-theology that attempts (and fails) to undermine not only traditional Christianity as a whole, but also their own argument in the first half. If the first half were there all alone, it could be a book to present to conservatives to show how the traditional understanding of the key passages is in error. But the second half undermines that usage, as it claims that the Bible is just a set of myths and legends, that it doesn't really matter what it says, only what you get out of it: UU uselessness. And for this reason, no conservative will be convinced of anything but their own fears that all the people who support homosexuality are hopeless liberals who don't believe in Biblical authority.

I am deeply disappointed, and I plan on looking elsewhere for help in presenting the *good* arguments to those of us who believe in the Bible. I strongly recommend that a person buy the book, and read only the first half, and tear out the second half and burn it.

1 out of 5 stars The worst book I have EVER read.......2007-07-23

I can honestly say that "One With the Night" is the worst book I have ever read. Although I have enjoyed reading a variety of books in this genre, this particular book was so utterly ridiculous that I wanted to toss it out the window. I did finish reading it, however, and now plan to pass it along to my friends because it is truly awful--much like the movie "Showgirls". Ms. Squires' writing style is just fine, but she includes all of these disgusting S&M scenes in the book and at one point even writes about the hero of the book being compelled to wear nipple clamps and... (well, I won't go into further detail because it would not be appropriate for a public website). After all of the silly bondage/S&M scenes, the Loch Ness monster arrives on the scene. At that point, I laughed myself silly.

Only read this trashy novel if you will enjoy reading something truly tasteless.

4 out of 5 stars 4 Klovers! Courtesy of CK2S Kwips & Kritiques.......2007-07-18

Callan Kilkenny longs for a release from the vampire curse that plagues him. Upon learning of a scientist who is researching a cure for vampirism, he presents himself to the good doctor as a test subject, willing to suffer the experiments until a remedy is discovered.

Dr. Blundell is only too keen to accept this unexpected offer, as his only child has contracted this mysterious condition. Infected through a cut after an accident in her father's laboratory, Jane has received no guidance for her newfound powers, her strange cravings, and the disturbing sexual urges she has begun experiencing - urges that increase in volume when she sets eyes on the ruggedly handsome Callan.

But not everyone is happy with Dr. Blundell's research. There are factions that would destroy his work and others who would own it all costs. Soon all hell will break loose at the little farmhouse that houses Dr. Blundell's laboratory - and Callan and Jane will find themselves right in the middle of it!

Susan Squires is a new author to me, but her blurb for One With the Night intrigued me, since I enjoy both historicals and paranormal romances - especially those with vampires. I have read many vampire tales over the years, many in the romance genre and even more that are not. I never tire of the theme, but I always appreciate a new spin on the phenomena, which is one of the attributes about this book which attracted me.

Squires' main characters treat vampirism as a disease, and while this may not be the first time this theory has been broached, it is less prevalent than others. She combines an old legend with a new concept regarding the origin of vampires, a little scientific research, and a non-traditional love story set in the Regency period.

Callan is certainly an atypical hero - he has long been subjected to continuous torture and subjugation at the hands of his Vampire Mistress. Freed upon her death, he sets out to find a way to remove his vampire companion and redeem himself of the evils he was forced to perpetrate while a slave. Make no mistake, however, Callan is far from a natural submissive. Indeed, he is very alpha male - strong, heroic, with a spirit not easily controlled. Yet when he falls for Jane and her life is subsequently threatened, he is willing to do anything, even sacrifice his freedom and his life, in order to protect her.

Jane is a woman out of place in her own time. She is an intelligent, independent woman, whose desires lean more to the cerebral than the matrimonial. For all her intelligence and spirit, she is still stifled by the time period she lives in, and to a degree by her own father. Although love has never been high on her list of priorities before, that changes rapidly when she meets Callan, and we see her woman's heart begin to blossom and come to terms with her scientific mind.

One With the Night is the fourth in Susan Squires' Companion series, a fact which is not at all apparent from the book cover - something which always irks me. I prefer to read series books in order, and appreciate it when both the series name and the reading order are easy to find within the book - either on the cover or in the first pages of information. That said, this book worked very well as a standalone novel, and I had no issue slipping easily into Squires' world. Even when I had completed the story, I had no clue this was part of a series until I recently visited Ms. Squires' website, which clearly identifies its place in her Companion series.

One With the Night will be enjoyed by anyone who likes a Regency Romance with Paranormal aspects, even if they have not previously read any of this series.

4 out of 5 stars Vampires, Nessie and a cure for The Companion.......2007-06-14

Susan Squires has written several books based around her concept of "The Companion", a parasitic/symbiotic blood disorder that confers strength, immortality, healing and ability to compel peoples' minds, all set in the early 1800s. Like her other books, "One With The Night" follows a similar theme, a vampire male who has suffered much torture under a strong vampire woman, has to face his fears when falling in love.

These books are all well written with interesting settings and varied characters. In this story, Callan Kilkenny, an Irish/Scottish vampire, is searching for the cure for his vampirism and understands that a scientist believes he has almost found it. When Kilkenny arrives at the scientist's house in Scotland he identifies the reason for the research - the scientist's daughter, Jane Blundell, is a new vampire (it turns out she was accidentally infected by some of the stored vampire blood that her father had). Kilkenny fights and kills a vampire who has come to kill the scientist as the possibility of a cure is a threat to some of them. Kilkenny realises he will have to guard the scientist and Jane to ensure they are safe as they work for the cure and he also volunteers to be the guinea pig for each new batch of the formula.

Almost immediately Kilkenny and Jane find themselves attracted to each other. He knows it's part of The Companion's influence on them but she knows nothing about her condition and doesn't find Kilkenny very forthcoming about it. She questions him but seldom receives helpful answers. When three more vampires arrive to help with the search for the cure Jane realises that there is a lot more to being a vampire as she sees Elyta, an old vampire, using her compulsion on Kilkenny. Can Jane and Kilkenny find the cure? Can they escape the evil influence of Elyta? Can Kilkenny come to terms with his past and the things he has done?

A problem that many people have with Susan Squires' books (and I am one of them) is the detailed descriptions of the tortures her heroes undergo. In this book it is less in the backstory (flashbacks, a device she uses in each book) but is detailed in events that are taking place in this novel. The scenes of male rape are very distasteful and the reader can get the impression that Squires enjoyed writing these parts a little too much, especially as such scenes are in all her Companion books. These are erotic stories but the main emphasis of this writing seems to be on the tortures and rapes rather than the relationship between hero and heroine. She depicts the mental anguish of the hero throughout his experiences very well and Jane, also, grows to learn of the effect her father's opinions of women have had on her. However this character development is subsidiary to the main plot of the attempt to find the cure and of the tortures of Kilkenny.

There's a guest appearance in this story of Nessie (the Loch Ness Monster) which is amusing but overall the dark tone of the story and the torture and rape descriptions don't make this easy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting romantic twist........2007-06-13

I enjoyed reading this book because it had an interesting new twist on what was a "vampire". It sounded believable, like it could actually happen this way. I loved the character Callan. He had an impeccable will and sounded so HOT!! I would love to find a man like him,,hehe. I couldn't help falling in love with his character. Come to think of it, I would take him as either human or vampire ..seriously. Overall it was a good story, something different than all the previous vampire stories I have read.

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars.......2007-05-20

Accidentally turned into a vampire, Jane Blundell does not meet another of her kind until Callan Killkenny comes to her father in search of a cure for the curse that plagues him. Now, Jane learns what it means to be a vampire, and what it means to be a woman in love. However, she and Callan are not the only vampires who want to know about the possible cure her father has been working on, and the others who want it are not at all good or in any way kind.

**** Good and evil are portrayed in start contrast in this well-written, dark tale. Ms. Squires' wordcraft is adept and vivid, but it should be noted that there are some very disturbing scenes. She creates villains who are shown to be utterly twisted and evil and it might be difficult to read about their actions. ****

5 out of 5 stars Well Written - Really Drives Home Impact to Those Affected but Not Involved.......2005-10-22

I never thought about the thousands of people all over the world who conscientiously practised their profession but were brought down by a series of scandals by people they never knew working in offices they never dealt with. This book is the fall of Arthur Andersen from their point of view. It details the history of Arthur Andersen from its founding until the end and tries to makes sense of what happened. They do a powerful job, making the reader sensitve to the size and corporate culture of Andersen and explaining how changes in the company to accomodate the changing demand for audit services opened the door to this kind of thing to happen. If you couple reading this book with books about Enron itself, you will definitely be feeling that only the people in Anderson involved in the scandal should have been brought down. That being said, they do leave in the "smoking guns" - the former scandals that had caused the SEC to say basically, "One more time and your dead" to Andersen. Enron was the one more time. Still, this book made me think that there might have been a better way of handling it.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly interesting book.......2005-08-23

I had to read this book for school, and as one may figure before reading an accounting book, I was planning on it being a little boring. Contrarily, this book was very good. It was written by four ex-employees of Enron and Arthur Anderson, so it is very credible.

The book progressed very smoothly, and it made me very knowledgeable on what so many of us have heard, but so few really know about.

4 out of 5 stars good, workman-like explanation, approving yet critical.......2004-12-01

I read this for a writing project and found it one of the best accounts available of what happened to make this company collapse the way it did. While there is occasionally a sense of victimization running through it - the authors all worked for AA or were affiliated with it - it does not stop them from hard-hitting analysis of how a company declined from iconic status as a standard-setter to one that was, well, slowly corrupted and traducing its values (like, the authors contend, all the other big accounting firms).

What this book adds is an analysis of how AA's governance evolved, from a tightly controlled firm with a charismatic leader to a global, highly decentralised one that was impossible to govern. This was a slow, evolutionary development with consequences that no one could have foreseen. Slowly, values eroded, a culture came undone, and the result was, in many cases, a naked scramble for money. In essence, accounting became a doorway to far more lucrative consulting arrangements, and so AA began increasingly to cooperate with those it was supposed to audit as a public service and with independence and integrity (as it clearly did in the past when the firm stood for something).

Where this book is weaker is on the wider context of the economy, which the reader will have to seek elsewhere. Moreover, while the SEC scrutiny - and the indictment that killed the company - may have been unfair, there were so many scandals developing that at least one firm was slated to take a fall. It was AA, as it turned out, somewhat a scapegoat in which many many good people got hurt, but still, in retrospect, it looks very very bad. I cannot feel outrage at its demise, though I do feel sympathy.

Recommended for specialists. This ain't pleasure reading, but the story is one that needs to be told as an ethics case study.

3 out of 5 stars Great overview of what is wrong with accounting..........2004-11-01

The Good: It provides a decent overview of the history of Arthur Andersen leading to the Enron debacle, and a good historical perspective of events leading to the downfall of AA. Also reaches some interesting conclusions at the end.

The Bad: Like another reviewer said, there's no in-depth "inside" look at what was going on in the Houston office, or really any explanation for the Waste Management, Sunbeam or WorldCom restatements beyond what's presented in the overview. It's not so much "Inside Arthur Andersen" as it is "The Rise and Fall of Arthur Andersen".

The Ugly: It's really far too short, and too heavily reliant on newspaper and internal AA documentation. I found a lot of things informative and enlightening about the book--but I admit I knew almost nothing about what happened before I read this book. It's a great starting point, and it raises many more questions and paths of inquiry than it does answer or solve anything.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting prespective.......2003-08-14

I was with Andersen for 8 years up until the fall of the firm. Book Description

The Handbook of Research on Teaching the English Language Arts, Second Edition--co-sponsored by the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English--offers a comprehensive overview of research in the field. This thoroughly updated second edition reflects developments in educational research and new information within the areas of language learning and instruction since the publication of the first edition in 1991. It assesses the significance of research, evaluates new developments, and examines current conflicts, controversies, and issues, while linking the work in one area to related work in others. Coverage includes the theoretical bases for English language arts teaching; different methodological perspectives; the early years of language acquisition; the multiple aspects of the language arts; teaching specific aspects of the English language arts curriculum; oral and written discourse; computer applications to language learning; and current approaches to studying the many ways and contexts in which people learn language. This Handbook is an essential resource for all professional educators, particularly curriculum designers at all school levels, researchers, policy planners, and practicing teachers of the English language arts.
