Snow doesn't just fall on cedars on Michigan's Upper Peninsula: it coats everything, mobile and inanimate, in a treacherously quick, dangerously thick blanket of white. As Alex McKnight observes, gazing out the window of his cabin in Paradise, "It looked like about six inches of new snow. Around here, that qualifies as scattered flurries." Given this climate, the urge to hibernate is perfectly understandable--batten down the hatches, throw another log on the fire, and wait until the spring thaw. For Alex, the denning impulse is as much psychological as it is physical. Haunted by memories of his deadly failures as a cop, a private investigator, and a lover, Alex wants nothing more than to plow his driveway, be cordial to the snowmobilers who rent his cabins, and lower his core emotional temperature to the forgetting point. Unfortunately, he's got friends who get in the way of his seasonal plans.

When Vinnie LeBlanc, an Ojibwa Indian, convinces Alex to fill in as goalie for his hockey team, slap shots and hard checks are soon the least of his worries. Instead, he becomes embroiled in a tangle of conflicting allegiances; one of his opponents, Lonnie Bruckman, a bigot and a psychotic, is terrorizing the Ojibwa reservation in ways both personal and professional: he abuses his girlfriend, Dorothy Parrish, and sells "wild cat," a methamphetamine derivative, to members of the reservation. Dorothy--desperate to escape her Ojibwa heritage but reluctantly acknowledging its force--turns up on Alex's front door with a mysterious canvas bag and a plea for shelter: "'The wolf moon means it's time to protect the people around you because there are wolves outside your door.'" But the next day, she's gone.

As Alex, devastated by his inability to protect Dorothy, tries to find her, he must confront Bruckman--for whom a snowmobile is less a recreational vehicle than an instrument of torture; a mysterious Russian named Molinov; the combined forces of the local police and the DEA; and, it seems, even those he has always considered friends. Luckily for Alex, Leon Prudell, "a two-hundred-forty-pound whirlwind of flannel and snowboots," who really, really wants to be a private investigator, is right there to lend a hand. Leon adds a welcome note of comic relief to the novel (as does, to be sure, Alex's own dryly sardonic wit), but the book's tone is largely elegiac: "It was the middle of the day, but with the sun hidden behind the clouds and the weight of snow in the air, there was an oddly muted light, dim yet persistent, as each snowflake seemed to glow with its own energy. I stopped for a moment ... hypnotized by the sight of it and by the sound of my own breathing." Surviving winter takes many kinds of courage, and the reader will be enthralled by Alex's efforts to disprove Molinov's ominous warning, "'Once you freeze all the way through to your soul, you will never feel warm again. You'll see.'"

Steve Hamilton won the 1999 Edgar Award for his first Alex McKnight mystery, A Cold Day in Paradise, and Winter of the Wolf Moon will reassure readers that neither beginner's luck nor sophomore jinx troubles this author. --Kelly Flynn

Book Description

Ex-cop and sometime P.I. Alex McKnight endures the bitter winter of Michigan's Upper Peninsula in his log cabin with warm fires and cold Molsons. When Dorothy Parrish, a young Ojibwa woman, asks him for shelter from her violent boyfriend, McKnight agrees. But after secreting her in one of his cabins, he finds her gone the next morning. McKnight suspects vicious, hockey-playing Lonnie Bruckman of abducting the woman. But his search for her brings on more suspects, bruising encounters, and a thickening web of crime, all obscured by the relentless whiplash of brutal snowstorms. From the secret world of the Ojibwa reservation to the Canadian border and deep into the silent woods, someone is out to kill-and McKnight is driving right into the line of fire....AUTHORBIO: STEVE HAMILTON, born and raised in the Detroit area, now works for IBM in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and children.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Story but a Weak (Unsatisfactory) Second Act.......2007-09-02

One of the problems when a author begins a series, is that he knows that at some point he will have to create a secondary line of interest from the one that was set-up in the first book. Alex McKnight is an ex-minor league catcher and ex-Detroit Michigan Policemen who retired from the force after being shot three times in the chest, with one bullet being left close to his spine. He lives in the Upper Peninsula (UP or Yoopee) of Michigan in the town of Paradise. He makes his living by renting out cabins that have access to Lake Superior in the summer and snowmobiling trails in the winter.

More than anything, McKnight doesn't want to be a cop or even a private investigator ever again. But just like in the first book he is pulled back into criminal investigation by the whims of chaos. He has even got a
'partner' in the guise of a snowmobile salesman, Leon Prudell (who we met in the first book). His only 'friends' are a Ojibwa Indian Vinnie Le Blanco and Jackie (as Scotsman) who runs the Glasgow Inn.

The first book was filled with references to the Ojibwa way of life and the way the people of the first nations looked to the land. Yes some of it was 'hokie' but it's what makes these types of stories interesting. In this book, the Ojibwa way of life is only tangential to the story and feels as if it was thrown into the story at the last minute.

There is a lot of flippancy and smirking in the way some characters are presented. Two DEA agents are named 'Champagne' and 'Urbania'; could this be a plug for the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana? Two Russian bad guys are named, 'Roman' and 'Pearl'; the word for novel in Russian (like in French/Italian) is Roman, but I'm not sure of the "Pearl" connotation. Vinnie La Blanco's (who is an off-reservation Indian) last name translate to "The White". Throw in Mc"Knight" and the Sault (Soo Michigan) Ste. Marie Police Chief "Maven" and it starts to get a little overwhelmingly 'cutesy'.

Lastly, we are left with the knowledge that at some time in the future there will be a showdown between McKnight and a 'vicious' Russian mob boss named Molinov (he shoots two of his own men for killing an 'innocent' woman); and you get the feeling that this book was only written to prepare the way for the rest of the series. It's way too over the top when it comes to violence for violence sake.

Not to mention the unrealistic physical recovery of McKnight, after being dragged behind a snowmobile and suffering a partially collapsed lung and concussion, he walks out of the hospital the same day that his chest tube is removed. The guy is forty- eight years old and can hardly walk the day after playing goalie in a thirty minute hockey game; but can leave the hospital with a couple of broken ribs and a three inch incision in his side! Enough said, let's get back to reality.

5 out of 5 stars Striking discription and story.......2006-12-01

This is my second "Alex" Novel. What can you say. You can feel that snow and cold, the boredom that can develop in the Upper and the people that live there and how they cope. His living in Michigan and observations have made him a great writer, any of us that live here in Michigan can feel all that he discribes. His plotting is great also both storys had me wondering all the way to the end. I will continue to read all his books as I progress. They are all great.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!"Winter of the Wolf Moon".......2006-11-06

I would call me an odd reader especially for a female!(46)Romance novels, etc. never have interested me.Never would I have thought a detective type story would even interest me!I couldnt put it down!I read it in a few hours! In fact I have just ordered the rest of his books! This was the first of the series I have read ,but now have all the rest coming!Should be a fine winter for my reading,of Mr. Hamilton's, Alex Mcknight series!!

4 out of 5 stars Howling at the moon.......2005-04-04

What I like about Steve Hamilton's books is the seamless transition between humor, albeit sarcastic humor, and the 'game's afoot,' the mystery. But then Hamilton's real strength isn't that but rather his poetic description of the forest, in many places along the UP still untouched, the cold, nature, the sky and the solitude. He's a little bit of James Dickey and James Lee Burke, who write of the south, while at the same time peppering the reader with the quips and glibness of Parker and Crais. A difficult task considering the solemnity of the forest and the comedic qualities of Alex and Vinnie. But Hamilton keeps Alex's tongue in check when he's painting his canvas.

The plot is fairly pedestrian. Here we have the woman in distress and the traumatized hero, Alex McKnight 'volunteered' to help her. Then you have the contiguous sanctity of the Native American culture that Detroit born Alex didn't grow up with, but respects and in many ways, embraces.

Someone is selling designer drugs on the Reservation, and Alex and his friend Vinnie LeBlanc wonder if the two events, the girl in distress and her subsequent disappearance, are related to the drug traffic. And then there's the winter.

Hamilton describes it so well you may want to click the heat in your crib up a notch. Beautiful writing, worth the more common boy meets girl, helps her out, loses her, looks for her and gets a real good beating on the journey. Hamilton has a great future, and we're the beneficiaries. 4 stars. Larry Scantlebury

3 out of 5 stars A great follow-up to his first novel!.......2005-01-16

Steve Hamilton's novels are so enjoyable to read. I just love the feeling of having one in my hand. This time Alex McKnight gets mixed up with a woman named Dorothy who asks for his help. Abused by her boyfriend, she just wants to get away. After letting her stay at one of his cabins, she turns up missing. Alex thinks her violent boyfriend may have kidnapped her and feels personally responsible for her disappearance. Later he finds out that she had a bag full of drugs and her boyfriend isn't the only one looking for her. Fast-paced and always a joy to read, Alex's personality leaps from the pages. I can't get enough of his wry humor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Retsudo Yagyu orders an open assault on Ogami Itto.......2002-12-06

"Gateway Into Winter," Volume 16 of the Lone Wolf and Cub epic manga by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima marks a major turning in the saga. Of the five episodes collected in this volume, three of them constitute major developments in the blood feud between Ogami Itto and Retsudo Yagyu. The fact that these three stories run consecutively only heightens the cumulative impact and make it very clear that we are entering a significant new stage in the epic:

(78) "Umbrella" is the quiet before the story, a tale of Daigoro left to fend for himself in a city. In addition to spending his time drawing on the wall, each day he witnesses the plight of a young girl, who must carry an umbrella to keep the sun out of the eyes of her mistress. Daigoro tries to lend a helping hand, but this only makes things worst for the young girl. As is often the case with stories focusing on Daigoro, the ending is simple and poignant.

(79) "Sayaka" is the last remaining child of Retsudo Yagyu and Ogami Itto's nemesis is training her carefully, sacrificing retainers so that she may hone her skills. Sayaka's strategy is simple: while attacking with her sword she throws a whirling o-teduma dagger into the air, forcing her opponent to make a choice: block her stroke and the dagger will strike. After she works out new attacks to all possible responses, her father sends Sayaka forth to slay Lone Wolf & Cub. But he also makes her a promise: if she, his last child should fall, then he will launch a frontal assault on their foes. Either way, there will be serious consequences for our hero.

(80) "Clouds of Silk" is one of the stories will have been waiting to read for a long time. I have engaged in speculation as to what the content of the Yagyu Letter might be, but I have given up on trying to guess the secret way that hides the message. I had no clue as to what it might be, but I did suspect that it would be something good. This episode proves I was right. I have been reading these stories one at night before going to bed and if this story had stopped sooner than it did I do not think I would have had the will power not to continue on to the next story. Fortunately, "Clouds of Silk" provides a better stopping place.

(81) "Demon Hide, Demon Seek" finds Ogami Itto and Daigoro in a whole new world where every city and village in the land has a poster with their pictures: 50 pieces of gold for the pair dead, 30 pieces of silver for information on their location. This story involves the first of what we have to assume will be many encounters with bounty hunters as the assassin becomes the target.

(82) "Gateway Into Winter" almost offers something of a respite from the high drama of the previous stories. Ogami Itto is persuaded to stay the night at the house of a woodcutter, who is tempted to try for the offered reward. But what can a poor woodcutter and his family do against the former executioner of the Shogun? One of the nice touches in this story are Kojima's drawings of Daigoro asleep.

I know I have said this before and I have little doubt I will offer up the same opinion again, but this is the best collection of Lone Wolf & Cub stories to date. Certainly it is has more pivotal stories than anything we have read previously. This might not be the final act in the saga (I certainly do not think that it is), but this is a whole new ballgame for our hero. Of all of the legendary comic series that come to mind, none of them were this good for this long. Most of the time the best of the best are limited series, ala "The Dark Knight Returns" or "The Watchmen," but there is no comparison to what Koike and Kojima have wrought.

Book Description

It is snowing in the wintry mountains of northwestern Pennsylvania. Once the land of wilderness scouts, later of the boomtowns of the first American oil barons, it is now a spare country of proud men and women hanging on to their lives, dignity, and what's left of prosperity in the declining years of the twentieth century. One tough old man, W.T. Halvorsen, is not going to let it all slip away without a fight. And the wolves are beginning to howl again in the mountains.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars As the Wolf Loves Winter.......2002-10-09

I found this to be an enjoyable, well-written thriller with unusually strong characterization. Poyer achieves an unusual feat, creating a junior high age girl character who's only annoying some of the time.

As people die mysteriously in the wintry Pennsylvania hills, a mining corporation faces a hostile takeover, and some begin to blame the killings on recently introduced wolves.

The corporate parts of the story are frankly rather boring until you reach the culmination, the reason for them. Poyer must have dealt with corporate vampire types before. The takeover and proposed restructuring ring true.

Believability isn't necessarily this novel's strong point. The twist, the criminal behavior of a character, comes with no foreshadowing whatsoever. Secret mines where trespassers are savaged by attack dogs? Wolves saving children from frozen lakes? (The wolves are described well and mostly accurately, but that bit lost me). Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book. The descriptions of the winter mountains are especially strong. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for a cold winter weekend!.......1999-01-11

Wow. I just finished reading this book during a subzero Midwestern winter, and I believe that was the best time to read it. The cold leaps off the pages and gets into your bones, just like it does to the characters in the book. You're reading along very nicely, understanding the plot and the players in it, when WHAM! A startling announcement at a community meeting throws you a curve. An old man and a little girl are lost in the woods. And suddenly you're on a literary roller coaster, flying toward the conclusion of the novel, unable to do anything but finish the darn book. It's great! Now I have to go read the other two episodes in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Third in the series of Hemlock County novels by David Poyer........1998-08-08

"Racks" Halvorsen, the old man of the woods in Hemlock County returns to take on corruption in the remnants of the oil business in the home area of the origins of oil production. Masterful writing by a great story teller with a true gift in use of the English language. If you like well developed characters, Pennsylvania, the oil industry, ecology, and a fast paced read; you can not go wrong with this book. If you haven't read the two previous novels in this series, reading this one will send you scrambling to find them. They are entitled: "Winter in the Heart" and "The Dead of Winter". You will find yourself in "Racks" Halvorsen's shoes and almost feel the frostbite.

5 out of 5 stars Where is everyone? No reviews yet, and this book is GREAT!.......1997-12-13

I have reviewed only a few books, and a "10" to me is equal to "Silence of the Lambs" in quality. So I find it hard to believe that I am the first one to review this book! It is exquisitely written, and the various threads will keep you fascinated trying to figure out how they'll fit together at the end. It's a weird premise for a popular novel, granted - "...an explosive novel of wolves, ecopolitics, oil, and murder" says the cover - but it doesn't require an ecological bent to appreciate this masterful work. Well, I'm off to find MORE David Poyer!

5 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful.......2006-03-07

My girls just loved this story of the wolves. Seven wolves waiting while the pups are being born. The eagle waiting for the pups to grow, so he can attack, the girl pup who is almost taken, but saved by father wolf at the last second. This story had my girls on pins and needles time and time again. Add to the mix that the book is beautifully illustraged and you have a book for toddlers and young readers that is just wonderful.

Kay Winters' Wolf Watch is a lyrical and intriguing story that that achieves a rare blend of poetry and realism. Winters is a rare and gifted poet and storyteller. This book is a must for all animal lovers!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book.......2001-05-29

Wolf Watch by Kay Winters is one of those books that a child will read and remember when he grows up. It is not only beautifully illustrated (the paintings are breathtaking), but the prose is powerful and poetic as well. You really feel as though you are inside the wolf pack and the wolf's world. I was never particularly fond of wolves (Little Red Riding Hood and all), but after reading this book I have a much truer picture of this amazing animal. I am now a wolf fan and want to do what I can to help save the wolves. I wouldn't be surprised if this book inspired many children--and adults--to help save the wolf. It will also inspire children to care more about all animals, I think. Buy this book, read it yourself, and then give it to a child you care about.

5 out of 5 stars My wolf loving son's favorite book.......2000-10-25

My 6 year old son loves this book. He has checked it out from his school libary about 4 times since the begining of the school year. This book is well written, with beautiful illustrations. The story is told in a sort of poetic manner. Sheds light on how wolf life is in a way that isn't bloody or scarey for younger children. My sons favorite animal is the wolf. Santa plans on bringing this book to my son for Christmas.

WINTER WOLF HAS BEEN ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOKS FOR YEARS. I USUALLY RE-READ IT EVERY YEAR WHEN THE SNOW STARTS BLOWING AND THE TEMPERATURE DROPS. IT HAS SURVIVAL STORIES, INTERNATIONAL COLD WAR INTRIGUE, ROMANCE, INTERESTING PEOPLES SUCH AS THE LAPPS AS WELL AS VERY WELL DEVELOPED CHARACTERS. IT HAS A DARK SIDE TO IT AND THE SUSPENSE BUILDS TO A FEVER PITCH THAT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO PUT DOWN. THE OUTDOOR EMPHASIS, WITH TUNDRA CROSSINGS, NAUTICAL STRUGGLES AND SIMPLY TRYING TO SURVIVE IN THE BRUTAL COLD AND WIND OF THE ARCTIC NORTH WHILE FIGHTING AGAINST TRAITORS AND KILLERS KEEPS ME TURNING THE PAGES AND RE-READING THIS BOOK ANNUALLY. I LOVE IT. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK BUT BAD START!!!.......2002-08-15

Jack Horne is a loaner. He lives by himself deep in the mountains. Three girls have been taken by the Arapaho. Horne is the only one who has a change of getting them back. Horne was once living with the Arapaho so he knows their customs. The Indians who took the girls are led by Red Hawk, who once was a good friend of Hornes. He looks for several months and the book is about his trying to find them. There is a lot of action and the book will hold your attention. I gave it a three because of the beginning. You are told on the first four pages how the book is going to end. I dislike books that do that. I much rather find out at the end of the book instead of the first. Shame on you Jory Sherman.

5 out of 5 stars PARRY DID GOOD!!!.......2001-12-06

This is the story of Wyatt Earp and his son, maybe, that he knows nothing about. Nathan Blaylock is the supposed son who is looking for Wyatt to kill him. Blaylock has been left a letter by his mother, before she died, stating that $20,000.00 dollars is his if he provides proof he killed Wyatt Earp. This book is how Nathan, Jim Riley and friends try to find Wyatt. The chase leads them through San Francisco, up to Alaska. There are many adventures and gun fights along the way. Do they find Wyatt in the end, do they kill him???? Have to read to find out. A well written book that gets you involved with the characters. You are sad when something happens to some of them. Keeps you attention. Think you will like this book. Really just fiction but after all most are just fiction.

4 out of 5 stars New Wyatt Earp Story.......2000-01-30

I have been reading books on Wyatt Earp for some time now, fiction and non-fiction. Richard Parry's Winter Wolf was a very good "What if" type of book. I was kept involved with the characters from the start of the book till the end. The real figures from Wyatt Earp's past helped to bring a feeling of reality to the story. Made me kind of sorry to know it was fiction.

It certianlly got me to wondering what might have happened if Wyatt had a son. I look foward to his next book and I am sure the readers of Winter Wolf will also. This is a book well worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......1999-11-14

I typically read at least one book per week. This book is the best I've read in over two years. I normally don't pick up western themed novels, but after watching several Earp movies recently I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed. I have recommended it to all my reading partners - and all have come back with similar experiences.

5 out of 5 stars The Serial Novel lives - and opens a great vista on Alaska........1999-10-27

As an author myself, I am distressingly short on time for pleasure reading. This book was worth the time! Having discovered it while teaching at University of Alaska, Fairbanks last summer, it gave me all kinds of insight and background into the terrain, the spirit, and the history of Alaska, an almost indescribably fascinating place. Louis L'Amour was my mentor, and I think he'd have been impressed both with Richard Parry's detailed historical research, and his capacity for keeping a story moving. Parry also proves my point that the SERIAL novel is a GREAT form of literature and entertainment. This book whetted the appetite for Book II!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've read all year!.......1998-05-02

I read over 100 books a year, and I rank them from 1 to 10. If I get one "10" a year, I'm happy. This is a Definite 10. This book has it all, action, adventure, and a great coming of age story set in Alaska. I don't normally read westerns, but I think anybody will enjoy this one.
