Book Description

A sinister fire in a Copenhagen bookstore ignites a relentless hunt across four continents. Arson and murder reveal an insidious plot to steal a Bible that once belonged to Charles Darwin, the father of evolutionary theory. And Commander Gray Pierce dives headlong into a mystery that dates back to Nazi Germany . . . and to horrific experiments performed in a now-abandoned laboratory buried in a hollowed-out mountain in Poland.

A continent away, madness ravages a remote monastery high in Nepal, as Buddhist monks turn to cannibalism and torture. Lisa Cummings, a young American doctor investigating the atrocity, is suddenly a target of a brutal assassin working for clandestine forces that want the affair buried at any cost. Lisa's only ally is a hidden pilgrim, Painter Crowe -- director of SIGMA Force, an elite command of American scientists and Special Forces operatives -- who is already showing signs of the baffling malady that destroyed the minds of the monks.

Now it is up to Gray Pierce to save both Painter and Lisa -- and a world in jeopardy -- as SIGMA Force races to expose a century-old plot that threatens to destroy the current world order . . . and alter the destiny of humankind forever.

Combining the historic scope of The Da Vinci Code with the relentless thrills of today's best action novels, James Rollins's Black Order is a classic adventure -- an ingenious and breathtaking tour de force that explodes with revelations . . . while offering a startling new view of our place in the grand scheme of existence.

1 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to "Bob" or "George?".......2007-10-11

I put this thing down after 20 or so pages. "Monk." "Grey." "Painter." Could we have a "Bob" or a "Dennis," please? Apart from the names, it simply wasn't believable. Marquez put a version of the Wandering Jew in South America, a girl who turned into a spider/scorpion, an immortal dictator, and he made it all believable. This simply seemed silly.

4 out of 5 stars The information was interesting - the story telling was too spasmodic.......2007-10-10

I've read Map of Bones and now Black Order. I recall liking Map of Bones, however I found Black Order to be written almost as though the writer was attempting a movie script. Every scene, and I mean EVERY scene, ended abruptly at some heightened, agonizing point of tension so that after reading only a few chapters I grew quite frustrated. It left you feeling as though you had proverbial whip-lash. I gave the book 4 points b/c the content was interesting and I enjoyed the plot. The melodrama got to be a bit much for me and I am not sure I will be purchasing Judas Strain after all the stops-and-starts with Black Order.

1 out of 5 stars Vastly overrated, waste of money.......2007-10-05

Given the great reviews and my love for this type of novels, I was more then ready to enjoy this book. Unfortunately it turned out to be more of a comic book then a novel. Rollins tries to pawn this comic book type plot off as 'scientifically' accurate. It that sense he makes a joke of himself and his writing. I would have been perfectly happy to ignore the ridiculous scientific inaccuracies of the plot. But he simply will not let us. He writes page after page of gibberish trying to convince us of the accuracy of the science. Even if you can ignore the rubbish of the science, maybe the action will keep you going. Yet even here you're left almost laughing at his writing. Save your time and money and avoid this author!

1 out of 5 stars Drivel.......2007-10-03

Makes the Da Vinci code look like it was written by Gore Vidal
The Black Order is insultingly under reasearched, trite, and idiotic.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, read something else.......2007-10-01

I picked up this book while waiting for my car to be fixed, and once started, I enjoyed it enough to finish. But I do not recommend this book to anyone. The plot is somewhat interesting, and the writing is adequate. However, the book just falls flat for me. I didn't empathize with any of the characters or really become engaged with the story. If you're stranded somewhere and need to waste some time, this book may be acceptable. However, in my opinion, there are too many great books to waste time reading merely adequate books. Look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Black Mystery Indeed.......2001-04-17

The truth of the existence of a top secret budget used to fund highly classified military projects is now a generally acknowledged fact. That members of Congress must routinely approve the expenditure of many billions of dollars to the Pentagon and various defense contractors is a necessary evil in a world that requires constant vigilance as the price of our continued freedom, or so we are expected to think.

In "Secret Black Projects Of The New World Order," author Tim Swartz reveals just how some of that "mystery money" is actually spent: to fund military technology light years beyond what the public believes is the actual state-of-the-art as well as to construct underground bases throughout the country that may be designed not only to shelter high ranking members of the government during a nuclear attack, but which may also serve as locations to which they bring unwitting "abductees" being used for government mind control and genetic experimentation.

The book begins with an overview of some of the more recent developments in the creation of spy planes for the US military, much of which still remains highly classified. Swartz provides a wealth of interesting details that chronicle the step-by-step process that has led to the Stealth bomber and the still unofficially acknowledged Aurora. The many twists and turns of governmental disinformation and cover-up efforts are examined, including the fact that UFO hysteria might be used to obscure what is actually quite terrestrial though extremely advanced flight technology. In other words, what are often labeled as UFOs could in fact be the mind-boggling weaponry of our own military.

Other uses for the black project funding are also revealed, among them secret electromagnetic weapons that were tested up and down the eastern seaboard of the US and Canada in the late 70s, resulting in extreme shock waves and power surges that blew apart sections of the houses in the surrounding area. The exact cause of the extreme electromagnetic "booms" was never discovered, but Swartz makes an excellent case for the probable culprit being a secretly funded military test.

"Secret Black Projects Of The New World Order" is a great source of both hard information and intelligent speculation regarding one of the most urgent issues of our time--how our tax dollars are being spent without our knowledge or consent to fund secret military projects that may be designed to enslave us as much as to protect us. (Witness the secret surveillance of civilian members of the population by the ubiquitous black helicopters, which is also covered in the book.) Armed with the material Tim Swartz herein provides, the reader will become better able to guard himself against the lies of the New World Order, which he sadly is also helping to foot the bill for.

5 out of 5 stars Aliens or Air Force?.......2001-03-19

Who is flying the UFOs? Is it aliens or the Air Force? Maybe both! For a detailed look at secret black budget projects, manmade UFOs, and the possible alien connection, get this well done book by an author that I am now growing more fond of each time I read one of his books. Well done.

2 out of 5 stars poorly written non documented dribble.......1999-07-03

This book was a great dissapointment. The author rambles from topics such as secret underground military tunnels linked by 700mph mag lev trains-to the Aurora project. I should have known that the book would be a study in paranoia, anything involving the term New World Order usually is, but I had hoped for something a bit more realistic from an analysis standpoint. The only good componants of this book involved some plausible presentations of various stealth aircraft of assorted sizes. Even than, the author goes of the deep end and asserts our B-2 bombers utilizes a secret new world order anti-gravity system. Hey, how about a little credit for the aliens?

3 out of 5 stars The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.......2004-03-18

The old wounds of Europe reopen: geriatric fascists last seen in the 1930s hobble lethally into the late 20th century, settling old scores and detonating bombs to teach a new "decadent" generation the meaning of order. Who better to stop them than another group of old timers--former members of the International Brigades from the Spanish Civil War, reunited for a final battle of bullets and principles.

This is a serious graphic novel with high ambitions. In a couple of respects it manages brilliantly. The artwork by Enki Bilal is exquisitely nuanced; his line finds dignity and pain in these old faces, and like them his Europe is beautiful and decayed. Author Pierre Christin's story has the satisfying weight of verisimilitude--and thematically he really gets what has to be here for this tale to work: the bitter intercourse of the past and the present.

Flaws? Christin's large, mostly uninteresting cast is populated by Hollywood cut-outs (think a left-wing "Dirty Dozen," bereft of the charm). Though its intricacies and sweep are compelling, the plotting isn't above an occasional cheat. And for a presumed critique of zealotry, the book is maybe too fond of its zealots. That said, there's enough here to recommend The Black Order Brigade as a cautionary tale about the price of belief--and fighting fire with fire. It's just not the dramatic equal of either its social intelligence or its ravishing artwork.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Graphic Novel.......2003-06-01

I can proudly say this is the toast of my graphic novel collection. In fact, I think this book defines the term "graphic novel". In its 78 pages, it spins itself like a true novel, with rich characterizations and complex set-pieces. True, there are lots of dialogues and voice-overs, but they never drag the story down. The story I won't reveal, but it reminded me of the Sam Peckinpah film "The Wild Bunch" in that the main protagonists are a bunch of men( and one woman ) well past their prime who assemble for one last job. Only, the job here is eliminating a bunch of equally old Fascist mercenaries. The bottom line is: If you are an admirer of mature graphic novels, buy this book. If not, stick to "X-Men".

        Book Description

The Africa of his ancestry, the Caribbean of his birth, the Britain of his upbringing, and the United States where he now lives are the focal points of award-winning writer Caryl Phillips’ profound inquiry into evolving notions of home, identity, and belonging in an increasingly international society.
At once deeply reflective and coolly prescient, A New World Order charts the psychological frontiers of our ever-changing world. Through personal and literary encounters, Phillips probes the meaning of cultural dislocation, measuring the distinguishing features of our identities–geographic, racial, national, religious–against the amalgamating effects of globalization. In the work of writers such as V. S. Naipaul, James Baldwin, and Zadie Smith, cultural figures such as Steven Spielberg, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and Marvin Gaye, and in his own experiences, Phillips detects the erosion of cultural boundaries and amasses startling and poignant insights on whether there can be an answer anymore to the question “Where are you from?” The result is an illuminating–and powerfully relevant–account of identity from an exceedingly perceptive citizen of the world.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Cheesy, boring, ridiculous..........2004-02-20

I had neither the desire nor the inclination to finish up this book. The plot is cheesy, the story is boring and the sex scenes are cheap and useless. The story of a young doctor who discovers that the new private hospital she works for is also a place where people go to seek pleasure intrigued me at first. However, this book and its erotic scenes read like a tacky, low-budget porn film. The BDSM scenes are especially ridiculous. I like erotica that awakens my intellect as well as my senses. Deanna Ashford has disappointed me with this book. She did a great job with Wild Kingdom, but this one misses the mark in more ways than one. Black Lace has let me down again. I hope that the next Black Lace book I read will be something like Menage, Wild Kingdom, The Tutor or The Captivation.

        2 out of 5 stars Utterly gratuitous.......2001-10-24

The characters in this story serve no purpose other than to fill up the usual Black Lace required scenes: BDSM from both sides, male-male, female-female, etc. There are some extras in there, and the sex is all very hot, but the plot is thinner than sub-atomic particles, and the characters could be cardboard cut-outs for all the reader would notice. With the possible exception of the actress and the orderly, who do develop a relationship and show some concern and tenderness in their encounters, all of the sex in this book is just a roller coaster ride of graphic shocks and erotic-boardering-on-bizarre encounters. If that is what you are looking for, do buy this book, you'll enjoy it immensely. If you are looking for plot, however, skip this one.

1 out of 5 stars You'll need a doctor after reading this book ..........2001-04-13

What a disappointment. This is nothing more than a hump and bump book with no character development no real plot no story no nothing.... I mean by the time we hit page 4 the main character, DR. Helen, is already .. well you know ....

Trust me when the cover says "Helen Dawson is a dedicated doctor ... " it should have said that Helen Dawson is a dim witted, boring, trailer trash character (if there is such a thing in the UK then she would be it) that is about as erotic a bowl of cereal...

The story deals with an oversexed DR who after working at a UK city hospital is transferred to a private instituion that deal with the movie crowd from the USA.

Needless to say it appears ALL the staff is so busy with their sex lives that I'm very glad none of the patients have any real medical need for them to be able to recover from their operations.

Don't waste your hard earned money on this .. as the Dr should have said .. take two asprins and call me in the morning ....

        4 out of 5 stars Doctor's Orders.......2001-02-05

I really enjoyed this novel. It had great sex scenes, but also a good story to keep you interested. The characters were well developed and the plot made sense. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys erotic fiction.

          Book Description

The popular mythology of the SS has a clouded story which is so complicated as to almost defy belief: a tale of intrigue and nepotism, of archeology and Teutonism, of art and symbolism. The story of "Himmler's Black Order" is one of an organization led by a man motivated by the belief that he was the spiritual reincarnation of the Saxon King Heinrich I, founder of the German Reich. It is the story of street fighters and convicted criminals becoming Ministers of State and police commanders; the story of charitable works and mass extermination being administered from the same building; the story of boy generals directing vast heterogeneous armies on devastating campaigns of conquest. Here, indeed, fact is stranger than fiction. This book covers in detail the origins, development and organization of both the Waffen-SS and the Allemeine-SS. The latter has been sorely neglected in post-war literature, yet it was the real body of the SS from which the more famous branches grew. The wide-ranging effects which the SS had on the police, racial policies, German history, education, the economy and public life are all described. Sections are also devoted to uniforms and regalia which were carefully designed to set Himmler's men apart as a new elite in Third Reich society. The SS at war is considered, and a balance struck between the substantial battlefield achievements of the Waffen-SS and the atrocities of SS and police forces in the occupied territories. The little-known story of the Germanic-SS, staffed by foreigners in Western Europe, is also related.

            Book Description

The Crucible of Race, a major reinterpretation of black-white relations in the South, was widely acclaimed on publication and compared favorably to two of the seminal books on Southern history: Wilbur J. Cash's The Mind of the South and C. Vann Woodward's The Strange Career of Jim Crow. Representing 20 years of research and writing on the history of the South, The Crucible of Race explores the large topic of Southern race relations for a span of a century and a half. Oxford is pleased to make available an abridgement of this parent volume: A Rage for Order preserves all the theme lines that were advanced in the original volume and many of the individual stories. As in Crucible of Race, Williamson here confronts the awful irony that the war to free blacks from slavery also freed racism. He examines the shift in the power base of Southern white leadership after 1850 and recounts the terrible violence done to blacks in the name of self-protection. This condensation of one of the most important interpretations of Southern history is offered as a means by which a large audience can grasp the essentials of black-white relations--a problem that persists to this day and one with which we all must contend--North and South, black and white.
