Customer Reviews:
A Great deal on Great books.......2007-07-08
I haven't purchased "the set" but I do own all the books. There are some monsters in the Monster Manuel 2 that are over-powered, but overall these books bring a great assortment of monsters. I wouldn't worry too much about two the books being 3.0 versions. There's not really enough of a difference between 3.0 and 3.5 to worry about in my opinion. However, if you really want them up-to-date, you can download files that do just that for free from the wizards of the coast website.
Not so bad.......2007-02-27
One of my very good friends owns this set and she says that the conversions from 3.0 -> 3.5 are not difficult at all. WOTC actually provides an update manual in PDF form (completely free) that shows you how to update the Fiend Folio and Monster Manual II to 3.5 so this is actually a good deal considering you get a massive amount of new monsters to play with and conversion is fairly quick.
not updated to 3.5.......2007-01-05
For all those that do not want to do the research themselves: The Monster Manual II and Fiend Folio books included in this set have NOT been updated to the D&D 3.5 rules. All three books are hard-covers though.
Note: I have not purchased this set (for the abovementioned reason), but this review was based on posts on the WOTC message boards from people who actually owned this set.

Book Description
For more than thirty years, Pern has conjured visions of brave men and women mounted upon the backs of dragons. As anyone knows who has been touched by the storytelling magic of Anne McCaffrey, to read of the exotic world of Pern is to inhabit it—and to experience its extraordinary dragons is to soar aloft with them and share their dazzling adventures.
Now, A Gift of Dragons brings together three beloved stories and a thrilling new tale of Pern in a single volume illustrated with beautiful artwork by Tom Kidd. In “The Smallest Dragonboy,” Keevan is the youngest dragonrider candidate, determined to impress a dragon when the next clutch of eggs hatches. But what transpires will surprise everyone—Keevan most of all. In “The Girl Who Heard Dragons,” a young girl’s rare ability to communicate with dragons puts her family in danger and will bring her face to face with her greatest fears—and with her most secret desire. The “Runner of Pern” is a girl named Tenna, who follows family tradition by delivering messages—and who will find her destiny on the mossy traces that runners have used for centuries under the dragon-filled sky. And finally, a very special gift: an exciting new Pern adventure, published here for the first time, fresh from the imagination of Anne McCaffrey.

A Gift of Dragons.......2007-10-02
Good read. Story about a young girl outside the community of dragonriders who entered their community. She was/is a person who "hears" all dragons but is not bonded to one specific dragon. I enjoyed it.
A Gift of Dragons.......2007-09-09
I like the short stories of Anne McCaffrey. I have the entire series, Dragonriders of Pern, and many other of her titles thus far and will continue to acquire subsequent editions as they hit the booksellers.
Fascinating Short Stories.......2007-08-01
I pick this book on a hunch at a bookstore while I was visiting friends in Oakland, Ca. When I realized that it was a series of short stories, which I don't care for, I thought I would be disappointed, but as it turned out I really enjoyed this book. The stories are appealing and the characters are very interesting. Overall, the book was worth the money, but I'll stick to full-length novels.
second time around.......2007-05-13
I first read the Dragons of Pern books many years ago. I enjoyed them very much. Recently I purchased them for my greatgrandson and reread this story with the accompaning other two stories. They are still great stories and my greatgrandson (age 12) loves them too. I will be purchasing others in the series for him. A great read for anyone who likes stories about intelligent dragons and fearless riders.
Awesome Book.......2007-05-06
I really loved this book. It is a good addition to any Pern Fan's collection.

Book Description
This slip-covered gift set contains the three New York Times best-selling titles that make up the epic War of Souls trilogy: Dragons of a Fallen Sun, Dragons of a Lost Star, and Dragons of a Vanished Moon. Authored by Dragonlance saga co-creators Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman, these titles each hit multiple best-seller lists upon initial release.
Customer Reviews:
Well, I am a fan of Weiss & Hickmann so..........2007-07-08
Great books. I have to admit that vol. 2 was a bit slow and dull at first but vol. 1 and 3 and most of vol. 2 made up for this. Didn't much care for the lovestory between Silvanoshei and the dark knight Mina so all this about Silanosheis love that wasn't returned is a bit dull for me (yes yes, I am a guy). But all in all I would rate this as a 5 star product. Another great story from Weiss & Hickmann.
Not as good as Weis and Hickman's previous novels.......2007-06-05
First let me start off by saying that I did enjoy these books. But I enjoyed the previous books more. The Chronicles Trilogy was the first set in the Dragonlance world and I must say the best. It all sort of went downhill from there, albeit a long hill with a small angle but still downhill. I really thought that with The Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame that led up to The War of Souls Trilogy, that there would be a "rebirth" (if you will) of the Dragonlance Series. But sadly that wasn't to be. An IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: I have been led to believe that the writers, Weis and Hickman, actually have very little creative control over the Dragonlance Series. I believe that these books are meant to be companions to the world of D & D. I enjoy reading not throwing dice to see how much damage I do. As such, maybe they threw dice to see how the storyline would unfold. I don't know.
The Good:
The story is great. The action is great. Tas the loveable and unlikely hero is back. There is a lot of action and intrigue to keep you interested. The whole trilogy is one big twist after another.
The Bad:
I'm afraid there may be more bad than good...but only just. The number one problem, and it is SERIOUSLY BAD, is the typos. Did anyone actually proofread this book? I mean seriously it is bad. By the middle of Dragons of a Lost Star (second book in the trilogy), I was almost ready to call it quits just because it was so hard to make any sense of it. Misspelled words...bad punctuation...missing words...extra words. Just really, really, really bad. They need to fire whoever edited this book.
Now about the problems with the stories themselves. POTENTIAL SPOILER
My best advise to the readers about these books and this goes for pretty much ALL of the Dragonlance novels: Don't get attached to ANY character because they ALL die. The writers spend 3 books building a character and getting them developed then kill them. Why would you do that? Take a lesson from R.A. Salvatore or Terry Goodkind and keep your main characters ALIVE. It's what keeps readers coming back for more. If Salvatore had killed Drizzt after his first trilogy, Salvatore's career as a writer would have been a lot less eventful. Same goes for Goodkind's Richard in the Sword of Truth books.
Let's see who has died along the way to The War of Souls. Keep in mind these are MAJOR CHARACTERS!
Sturm Brightblade, Tanis Half-Elven, Caramon Majere, Raistin Majere, Tika Majere, Alhana Starbreeze, Crysania, Goldmoon, Laurana, Palin Majere, Riverwind, Steel Brightblade, Tanin Majere, Kitiara Uth Matar (who needed more development), Berem the Everman (death was justified), Flint Fireforge, Tas Burfoot (dead but brought back) and I'm sure there were others but I think you get the picture. And again these were major characters. Why even bother developing them if they are so expendable? Heck, I wouldn't even bother being creative with the names. Maybe I can write a Dragonlance novel. "Here is Sam. Sam is an elf. Sam has to overcome insurmountable odds to save the world. Sam overcame the insurmountable odds and saved the world. Now Sam is dead." There, I just wrote a whole Dragonlance novel in five sentences.
What was the point of "The Second Generation" and "Dragons of Summer Flame"? They introduce new characters and then killed them all. Stupid.
Summary of my review:
These books have a great story, great plot, and great characters who will all die. Or if that sentence had as many typos as these books...Thes books have great story great plot and grate charactrse woh will all dye.
Engrossing but ultimately unsatisfying.......2007-05-13
I have been a long-time fan of Weis and Hickman and their Dragonlance books. They have an uncanny ability to write engrossing stories full of conflict and angst and failure that somehow still come together at the end on a note of acceptance and hope. In general, the characters end the stories as better people than they started them as, and the price the characters pay is redeemed by what they gain by the end. I looked forward to this new series. The story is certainly engrossing -- I found it hard to put the books down, even during the darkest and bleakest points in the story. But unlike their earlier works, Weis and Hickman don't manage to wrap this one up well. Several story lines end abruptly, as if Weis and Hickman just ran out of steam on them and gave up. More important, almost none of the characters end the story having learned anything important. The sacrifices made by the characters remain unredeemed at the end. I was left disappointed and unsatisfied. Go ahead and read the story -- it is well written. Just be prepared to feel incomplete at the end.
A Dragon Story and Much More.......2007-05-08
What makes this series so fascinating are the set of characters, especially the kender, who adds just the right amount of comic relief, and the freshness that comes from a vivid imagination on the part of the authors. You won't feel like you've read anything like this before.
Great Addition.......2007-03-27
I've been working on the first book of the three and so far I'm enjoying it as much as all the other Dragonlance Novels I've read. If you love the Dragonlance novels, you won't be upset with this pick.

We love the Good Knight!.......2007-02-19
We've been enjoying this series starting with Good Night, Good Knight and this is another good one but not our favorite (the other 3 are a little better: Good Night, GK, Get Well, GK, and Take Care, GK). The Little Dragons try to make a special birthday for the Knight but with predictably messy results. She found the story silly and fun. We would recommend all of the Good Knight books

My Father's Dragon--a favorite of young readers since the 1940s and a Newbery honor book--captures the nonsensical logic of childhood in an amusingly deadpan fashion. The story begins when Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father as a boy) runs away with an old alley cat to rescue a flying baby dragon being exploited on a faraway island. With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer disarms the fiercest of beasts on Wild Island. The quirky, comical adventure ends with a heroic denouement: the freeing of the dragon. Abundant black-and-white lithographs by Ruth Chrisman Gannett (the author's stepmother) add an evocative, lighthearted mood to an already enchanting story. Author Ruth Stiles Gannett 's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
When Elmer Elevator hears about the plight of an overworked and underappreciated baby flying dragon, he stows away on a ship and travels to Wild Island to rescue the dragon.

If your child likes animals, humor, adventure, and maps..........2007-10-10
This might be the book that gets your reluctant, or comic book obsessed child into reading. This book includes a dialogue with an alley cat on the first page...a map of imaginary lands, and a clever story about imaginative trickory of various animals. I haven't seen a lot like this out there for the 7-10 year old readers. It also makes for great bedtime reading, as the adventure is gentle, the pictures not too frequent, and the text soothing, descriptive, and rhythmic.
Buy a better quality print of this book.......2007-08-22
While the story is definetly worth 5 stars, all the paperback printings of this story render the art absolutely hiddeous. The fine graphite shading of the illustrations is totally lost and the images end up looking like Xeroxes from a newspaper. I grew up reading this story in an anthology of stories published in the 1950's; the art in the anthology is of the highest quality so I know most reprints of this story today are sadly lacking - and it's a shame, too, because I know how much I enjoyed looking at the pictures as a child with my grandfather reading the story to me. These newer printings leave much to be desired.
SUPER .......2007-08-14
I just finished reading this clever, witty and engaging book to my almost-four-year-old son and we both enjoyed it very much!
My daughter - age eight - read it in about thirty minutes and I am considering using it as a resource for copywork in our daily lessons.
This is one of the most entertaining and sweet books we've ever read as a family.
My boys favorite series!.......2007-01-03
Great story about a boy who rescues a baby dragon. My 3 and 5 year old love this series, and anything that doesn't beep, flash, or make a mess that will get a 3 year old to sit down for half an hour at a time has to be great! The storyline is very imaginative, and revolves around being nice to others and using what you have to solve the problems you run into.
AN Amazing Adventure.......2006-12-17
These books are so special because they capture thae minds of all readers, and mean somthing more to younger kids because, Ruth Ganett use her imagineation as is she could go into a mind of an kid 5-9 and speak their thoughts. I am an avid reader, so out of all the books I've read this is one I will cherish forever. Everyone should read it even if a 190 year old person special ordered a super deluxe HUGE print version, they would still enjoy it.

The Tale of Custard the Dragon
ASIN: 1430307420 |
Book Description
Rochelle Moore has written a magical fairytale about SNODVARK THE NAUGHTY DRAGON. The author has interwoven a moral within this beautifully written book: "IT IS OK TO BE DIFFERENT" Watch your child light up as they fall in love with this baby dragon. Watch as their imagination is enlightened and engrossed in SNODVARK'S naughty adventures. This is a highly recommended childrens fairytale which is suitable for all ages particularly 4 to 10 year olds.

Snodvark the Naughty Dragon.......2007-02-23
I was very disappointed in this book. The story is poorly written and obviously was not edited. It is full of grammar errors as well as mis-spelled words. Sometimes words are left out of sentences entirely. The story line reads like something a grade school student would have written. I would not recommend this book.

magical fairytale that actually teaches them right from wrong.

Customer Reviews:
Wag the Dog........2004-02-06
This delightful story tells the tale of a boy who meets a kindly dragon on the edge of town. The boy and the dragon become friends and start spending a lot of time together. Then the people of the town find out about the dragon and send for St. George. The boy meets with St. George and takes him to meet the dragon. All three soon become friends and find themselves in a quandry. George doesn't want to kill the dragon and the dragon has no desire to kill George. A plan is hatched and at the end of the story everyone lives happily.
It's really great reading this to younger children. It's got a great message about not prejudging others. It also shows how people can sometimes get everything they want, without anyone having to get hurt by it. That doesn't happen often, but it's nice to be reminded now and again that it can.
A Treasure!.......2002-05-11
Author of historical fiction.
This book is a treasure for your library. It brings endless pleasure, and is the kind of story that spans all ages.
It is the tale of a boy and his dragon who lives up on the Downs. In spite of the bad reputation dragons have, the boy and he become quick friends. Saint George shows up to do battle with the reluctant lizard, and the boy arranges a mock battle, unbeknown to the villagers that pleases everyone.

I love this story but am interested to know the illustrator. If it is Marlene Ekman's illustrations in the hardcover version then it is the best publication. Her pictures add real life to this wonderful child's story.
Reading level is age 8 and above.......1999-05-19
This is a wonderful story that can be enjoyed by all ages. But because of some of the archaic phrasing I would not recommend it to students under the age of 8.
