Product Great...Distributor Poor.......2005-09-23
I paid a premium for faster delivery. From the time the order was placed to the time It was delivered, was a week. If thats premium service then it's a joke. For as much as the shipping charges were I would have expected a much faster delivery. I actually did not have it when my class started which set me behind from day one.
For the younger studier of earth science.......2001-05-10
I used this book for a class I took. It is definitely for someone with no prior knowledge to eaerth science. This would include if you have taken any middle or high school level Geoscience class

Good for AM portion of PE Exam and PM portion of Geotechnical.......2006-09-26
Even though Index is not that great like CERM (Civil Engineering Reference Manual, you can still find valuable examples and basic concepts that PE Exam requires.
Best of Luck.
Excellent Resource.......2000-11-18
I found Mr. McCarthy's book to be a valuable resource. From a geologist's perspective, it was of great help in bridging the gap between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. It gave me greater insight into not only field technique, but also into geologic considerations that are of importance in foundation design. The text was both concise and clearly written.
From a Civil/Geological Engineering student's view..........2000-05-03
* Poor index - no detail * Good detail in text on subjects covered * Has some errors in the chapter on flownets * Disjointed in discussion of compaction * Good for students with little to no soil mechanics background

Book Description
The fifth novel in Asimov's popular Foundation series opens with second thoughts. Councilman Golan Trevize is wondering if he was right to choose a collective mind as the best possible future for humanity over the anarchy of contentious individuals, nations and planets. To test his conclusion, he decides he must know the past and goes in search of legendary Earth, all references to which have been erased from galactic libraries. The societies encountered along the way become arguing points in a book-long colloquy about man's fate, conducted by Trevize and traveling companion Bliss, who is part of the first world/mind, Gaia.
Customer Reviews:
great finish to a great series.......2007-08-08
Well if you are reading this book it is only because you have read the preceding books, and to be honest as others have said this book is a departure from all the others, it focuses more on the human element and no so much on technological marvels that some of us wish we could see, it is a fitting ending to a series and it is very satisfying.
A great book...because.........2007-06-06
It's part of the great Foundation saga from I. Asimov.... i really enjoyed every word of it.... you must read the saga!
A bit disappointing.......2007-02-13
It would seem that the last batch of books produced by the Asimov aren't quite what they use to be. I'm still and always will be an avid fan, but the last two books in the foundation series were a bit of a let down. Though Foundation Forward (in the timeline between Prelude to Foundation and Foundataion) was relatively the best of his last 3.

The Last Book of the Foundation Series (in Foundation Timeline), 4 stars, 356 Pages, Publ 1986.......2006-06-01
Golan Trevize looks for Earth. The novel picks up right after the end of Foundation's Edge. I found Foundation's Edge slightly confusing in that there was something effecting the minds of both the Foundation confederation and the minds of the Second Foundation, and wasn't completely sure if it was a Third Foundation or what. Foundation and Earth clears that up, well sort of. It is not a Hari Seldon originated organization, it is the planet Gaia, but calling it a Third Foundation could be used if you redefine The Foundation. It is hinted that there may be yet *another* group effecting events in the galaxy; the equivalent of a Fourth Foundation... or maybe a Zeroth Foundation. This is one of the slight, but exasperating aspects of this novel. In the Author's Note of Prelude to Foundation, Asimov wrote that he could and may add to the Foundation series and as for books after Foundation and Earth he could add "additional volumes - as many as I like"). In parts it feels like that, that Asimov is setting himself for additional volumes, rather than this being the definitive end to the Foundation series, as it now is. Another thing is that Asimov groups his Robot, Empire, and Foundation series in one all encompassing series. For whatever contradictions exist between the series, Asimov gives preference to his Robot series.
Foundation and Earth takes us on a tour of seven different planets and the different habitations of each. Some have gone to the dogs, some are autocratic, and there's excitement on each one. Asimov has set up the galaxy in that are no other known intelligent non-human (or human-made) species. Sort of answers the famous questions on the lack of evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence: "where is everybody?". Well, Asimov's answer is: there isn't anybody else... well kinda, sorta... If you read the book you'll understand. Actually, even though there are these ambiguities on the universe here and there, Asimov does wrap up the Foundation series somewhat nicely (although you may not like it as it differs from the original Foundation series), as well as wrapping up his grouping of all of his series into one.
The best Foundation novel !!!!.......2005-11-09
This is, in my humble opinion, the best Foundation book of all!
I wish good old Isaac continued to expand the notions introduced in this book, instead he regressed and wrote "Prelude to Foundation."
Book Description
Citywide networks of green roofs can result in cooler summer temperatures, reduced energy demand, controlled stormwater runoff, protected wildlife habitat, and an enhanced sense of urban well-being. Highlighting these benefits, Green Roofs informs and inspires communities, designers, building owners, and government and business leaders by showcasing the environmental and aesthetic potential of green roofs around the world.
"Imagine the effect of community kitchen gardens on the rooftops of New York City," writes visionary green architect William McDonough in his forward. "The gardens would make visible the vital connections between water, soil, food, and human culture, and create a network of living landscapes across the ancient archipelago that is New York City."
Hundreds of photographs, forty case studies of exemplary green roof projects - from Mexico City to Malmo, Sweden to Fukuoka, Japan to Dearborn, Michigan - provide inspiration and guidance for green roof development, as well as design details. The book includes seven essays on green roof development in Berlin, Tokyo, London, Portland, Chicago, Toronto, and New York City. Additional essays detail the technical requirements, architectural history, and design possibilities of vegetated rooftops.
Customer Reviews:
Look elsewhere for technical info.......2007-06-25
Perhaps some of the previous reviewers liked it because they use it for inspiration when designing at the very high visual level -- because really, this book is about pictures.
There is no useful information in the book about the design or construction of green roofs (except a couple of pages in passing).
Want to know more about how to design and construct using membranes, insulation, drainage, soil and gravel? Then look elsewhere.
Want to know more about how to design and construct a green roof on a new versus and existing building? Then look elsewhere.
How about planning the maintenance needed for a green roof whilst at the design and construction phase? Again look elsewhere.
Nice Coffee Table book, but no real information.......2007-01-25
Compared to the wealth of books on the subject in German and Japanese, there has yet to be a single good book in English. This book has nice pictures, but it doesn't even attempt to touch on the detail required to fully understand this subject adequately to qualify people to specify and actually implement Green Roofs. [...].
Green roofs around the world.......2006-04-23
GREEN ROOFS: ECOLOGICAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION advocates the construction of 'green roofs' which can reduce energy demand and protect wildlife, packing in a survey of buildings and communities already using such roofs to their advantage. Some forty case studies of these projects pair color photos of roofs around the world with discussions of sustainable development and project management: thus practical applications appear alongside environmental advocacy. Experts also discuss technical requirements and history, which will please working architects. An excellent survey of working green roofs and their appeal.
Great Book.......2006-01-27
As a very vocal proponet of green or living roofs I love this book. I believe that Mr Collum, previous reviewer must have just looked at the pictures. Pages 9 through 23 tell very well why we should have green roofs. If you are already an advocate or a newbe to green roofs, this book is for you. There is not a lot of technical information here but it gives the bare bones. If everything you needed to know about green roofs was here you couldn't lift the book. This book is ment to inspire you to get behind green roofs and advocate them in your neighborhood.
Why produce a book like this?.......2005-12-23
This book has lots of nice photographs. That is all. The technical section consists of two pages which state that a waterproof membrane is needed between the roof structure and the soil. There is no information of a technical nature in the book. I wonder why use up the earth's resources for no value. An absolute waste.

Customer Reviews:
One word per page, but good for vocabulary........2006-03-02
This book is nice, sturdy, and slick so it's lasted through countless Spanish classes as well as my own three children for close to four years. If you're looking for a story, this isn't it. It has an English word and a Spanish word on each page. The main thing it lacks is the phonetic Spelling. Overall, a good vocabulary builder, or an addition to a comprehensive curriculum's chapter on weather, like Flip Flop Spanish.
Bright pictures and nice sized words are easy to see, but just not a real show-stopper for daily use with my own children. However, it is great in my Spanish classes.
At home, it would be a great addition to any curriculum, to change things up with some colorful pictures. Many of my clients use it with Flip Flop Spanish.
Spanish/English fun for little ones.......2002-10-18
It amazes me to hear my grandson and granddaughter using the Spanish words from this volume and the others in the author's bilingual series. I guess that is the best tribute to the quality of the books in the series--they reach and they teach. The books are thoughtfully put together and have great visual appeal. Lots of fun for the grandkids (and for me) as we learn.
Bilingual Fun for Beginners.......2001-06-23
Que suerte! What luck! We are so glad we came across this book and the others in Gladys Rosa-Mendoza's series. The author does a nice job of introducing basic English and Spanish vocabulary words in an interesting way. My son enjoys listening and looking at the colorful drawings and trying to repeat the words. All in all it's a nice addition to our children's bilingual collection. Gracias Amazon for providing these great teaching tools!!!!

Book Description
The revision of this best-selling text for a junior/senior course in Foundation Analysis and Design now includes an IBM computer disk containing 16 compiled programs together with the data sets used to produce the output sheets, as well as new material on sloping ground, pile and pile group analysis, and procedures for an improved anlysis of lateral piles. Bearing capacity analysis has been substantially revised for footings with horizontal as well as vertical loads. Footing design for overturning now incorporates the use of the same uniform linear pressure concept used in ascertaining the bearing capacity. Increased emphasis is placed on geotextiles for retaining walls and soil nailing.
Customer Reviews:
Its Alright........2007-08-30
Its a very good source, and considered a bible by some, but is strictly in metric and also relies on software instead of thorough calculations at certain points. I dont have a hatred of metric, but I wasnt raised on trained in the system so it'll make you feel quite left out if youre not an SI guy/girl. As to the software comment, its very true and sometimes examples skip steps at which point the author jumps from A to D to M to Z with little or no explanation.
so-so.......2007-01-16
I regret this purchase. If you want to know how to do these calculations...do not buy this book. If you would like to blindly use a diskette to solve problems...well by all means purchase now.
Excellent Working Reference.......2007-01-03
This book is an excellent working reference for any civil/geotechnical engineer. The example problems are very well written. The charts and graphs are easily read and very clearly printed. Excellent section on the design and analysis of segmental retaining walls. Beware of some other sites selling versions of this book printed overseas and sold here.
CLASSICAL TEXTBOOK for GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS .......2006-03-01
I'm a civil engineer involved in the design of large hydraulic structures.
We still use Bowles in our firm for designing many structures including retaining walls of different kinds, cellular cofferdams, buildings foundations, etc.
It includes many examples, easy to understand, and many charts and tables very useful for the designer.
A fundamental reference.......2003-07-09
If you have only a few geotechnical engineering books, this should be one of them. As a practicing geotechnical engineer I use this book 2 to 3 times per week. It includes the theory and essential reference material.
Book Description
A remarkable collection of vibrant and diverse readings, Sustainable Architecture White Papers explores the critical link between our built and natural environments. Cutting-edge architecture, design, planning, public works, and education leaders illustrate the value of a new architectural strategy. Sustainable Architecture teaches us that when creative processes are used in conjunction with social, cultural, and environmental systems, architecture can meet the aesthetic and practical requirements of today without compromising the needs of future generations.
A sample of the contents reveals a top-notch team of forward-thinkers: William McDonough: "Eco-effectiveness: A New Design Strategy" Croxton Collaborative Architects: "Human-Centered Sustainable Design" Architectural Record: "Taking the Elective Out of Environmental Education" Karl Linn: "Reclaiming the Commons" Pliny Fisk: "Advanced Green Building" James Wines: "The Art of Architecture in the Age of Ecology" Emilio Ambasz: "Green Towns"
This beautifully assembled compilation, published by the Earth Pledge Foundation, follows on the success of Sustainable Cuisine White Papers and reflects the organization's mission to promote sustainability, primarily in the areas of architecture and cuisine. Working with architects, builders and designers, and farmers, chefs, and restaurateurs, Earth Pledge creates nonprofit media projects that promote "green living" in these respective areas.
With a preface by Paul Hawken, this is a star-studded collection of essays on sustainable architecture that speaks to professionals and nonprofessionals alike. A perfect read for anyone interested in how the architecture and design aesthetic connects with environmental sustainability.

Sustainable Architecture White Papers.......2006-11-06
A must read-and-keep for everyone, young-and-not-so-young, in the architectural profession, and the rest of the building indudtry!
Socially Conscience Design.......2005-07-11
I am an architecture student, and this book has insight that I may not have gained through other resources. It is a fast read with a lot of great examples and theory. This resource contains multiple ideas from leading practitioners in environmental sustainability. Chapters include: "Practice, Building Community, Public Works, Homes and Schools, Products and Materials, and Resources."
Great Green Resource.......2003-03-12
Short papers on many different topics concerning green building, sustainable design, and renewable energy. Top experts in the field offer advice, experience, and resources.
The voices of sustainable design.......2001-06-26
The Earth Pledge Foundation's Sustainable Architecture White Papers brings together leading voices---of architects, designers, planners, educators, manufacturers, and journalists---in a handsome, diminutive volume. The essayists are each a part of the sustainable design movement; some have been in the trenches for years, such as Randy Croxton and Kirsten Childs, James Wines, and Bill Browning, and others are household names, such as William McDonough (writing with his chemist collaborator Michael Braungart). Some address the big picture and others deconstruct the micro components of the effort, such as non-toxic paints and office furniture. The volume includes an interview with Samuel Mockbee, who founded Auburn University's Rural Studio, and whose clear-eyed approach to how architecture fits into communities is remarkably elegant and simple. "The smart architect thinks rationally about a combination of issues including sustainability, durability, longevity, appropriate materials, and sense of place," he says. "The challenge is finding the balance between environmental considerations and economic constraints." What's important about a diverse collection of essays like this now is that it comes when the movement is breaking into the mainstream in a more complete way than it has in the past. Sustainability is being addressed, increasingly, as something that involves not just the physical but also the social, institutional, and spiritual aspects of life on earth. This volume is a valuable guide to that breakthrough, from the practical to the visionary.
Book Description
It costs a lot of money to build a well in Africa - a lot more than Ryan Hreljac had thought. Still, the six year old kept doing chores around his parents' house, even after he learned it could take him years to earn enough money. Then a friend of the family wrote an article in the local newspaper about Ryan's wish to build a well to supply people with safe, clean water. Before long, ripples of goodwill began spreading. People started sending money to help pay for Ryan's well. Ryan was interviewed on television. He appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, twice. His dream of a well became an international news story. In Agweo, Uganda, villagers were used to walking a long way every day in search of water. What they found was often brown and smelly and made a lot of people sick. But when Ryan's well was built, life in the village changed for the better. A young orphan named Akana Jimmy longed for a chance to thank Ryan in person for this gift of life - clean water. When they finally meet, an unbreakable bond unites these boys from very different backgrounds, and a long and sometimes life-threatening journey begins. Ryan and Jimmy is a true story of friendship and compassion in which a simple wish to help others brings focus to the necessities that unite us all.
Customer Reviews:
Action.......2007-05-29
Every person - child or adult - should read this book. Ryan is the perfect example of someone who saw a need and took action. As a teacher at an International Baccalaureate - Primary Years Programme, this book stands side-by-side with the profiles and attitudes of a reflective learner.
A much needed resource for a shrinking planet.......2007-02-28
The story begins with a teacher telling her classroom of young children about the plight of children in Africa who are without clean drinking water. A boy saves up money from household chores to help. But the book is far more than just a story about bringing a well to an African village. There are enough twists and turns in the plot to keep everyone on the edge of their seat. Not only do Ugandan children drink unclean/unsafe water, but their very lives are at stake because of roving bands of kidnapped children who were forced to become soldiers. A thoroughly engrossing book suitable for classroom read-aloud time.
