Altogether, over twenty years of collecting and research, both in the United States and in England, have gone into the development of this book. In the pattern section over 360 patterns are identified and shown in full color. The book also contains a brief history of ceramics and the manufacturing techniques used by Johnson Brothers and other dinnerware manufacturers. An added chapter presents some historical background and motivation on the "Historic America: and "Old Britain Castles" patterns.
To date, this book is the most complete work on the Johnson Brothers Company and its wares. In all, there are over 560 color photographs and a number of informative sections detailing backstamps, styles, coloring, and the variety of pieces and items produced.
For years, my mother has been urging me to read fantasy and science fiction novels, to branch out of my safe cocoon of romance books and thrillers. She's touted the works of Wen Spencer as being some of the best, and yes, now that I've had the privilege of reading A BROTHER'S PRICE, I announce to the world that my mom was, as usual, correct.
Kudos to Ms. Spencer for getting me so worked up with this book that I'm now compelled to seek out her entire backlist! With A BROTHER'S PRICE, we enter a world in which it's not oil, gold, or money that have the highest monetary value, but men. Men, as in male children born to mothers-an event that happens so rarely that male offspring are often hidden from everyone but immediate family, and that many of these children are treated as a commodity, bought, sold, traded, and sometimes stolen outright.
For the women of Wen Spencer's make-believe world-which, by the way, reads as oh-so-probable-having a male child is cause for celebration, joy, and secrecy. Due to miscarriages, still births, and unexplained circumstances, women have no trouble giving birth to a multitude of female offspring, but a boy is a very rare occurrence indeed.
For Jerin Whistler, a boy who's near to coming of age and the dreadful thought of being sold into a marriage of his sisters' choosing, taking care of a multitude of younger siblings isn't enough of a life. Taking care of the family farm-when's he let out of his sisters' sight-isn't the kind of life he'd imagined for himself, either. But with so many siblings, the majority of whom are girls, Jerin sees no other life but allowing himself to be sold into marriage for a "brother's price," gaining his sisters monetary gain to continue their way of life.
When a mysterious young woman named Ren is left for dead in the wilderness of the Whistler property, Jerin knows that it's his duty to bring the woman to safety and ease her back to health. What a surprise it is when he discovers that the beautiful Ren, for whom he's quickly falling in love, is none other than Princess Rennsellaer. For Jerin's family, all of whom are well-meaning despite their sometimes crass attitudes, Jerin's rescue of a true-blooded Princess is the chance they've been waiting for. All they need to do is return Ren to her royal family, arrange for her marriage to Jerin, and the family will be set for life.
As most stories go, however, nothing is ever that simple. Jerin finds himself swept up into royal politics, where some women will stop at nothing to make sure that men are never allowed into positions of power. As Ren and Jerin grow more deeply in love, as tempers rise within the royal family, and as continued attempts to kidnap the Princess need to be thwarted, Jerin realizes that marrying for love might not be as easy as he'd hoped.
I loved this book! A twist on the typical royal princess who wants to wait for her "one true love," Wen Spencer's world of too many women and too few men is all too believable. Jerin is a hero that anyone would be proud of, not only for his bravery and devotion, but for his desire to do whatever it takes to keep those he loves safe.
To my mom, thanks again for being right! And to Ms. Spencer, thanks for such a fabulous book, definitely worthy of its 5 Blue Ribbon rating!
A Nice Thought..........2007-03-14
It's nice to find a book that completely stands out in the fantasy genre. A Brother's Price is an extremely original romance ( and please do not mistake this for anything but a romance).
As the summery and other reviews will say, it is based in a world where there the birth of a baby boy is rare. In this world, women rule though clans of sisters and men are nothing but pieces of property.
I enjoyed all of the little details that Wen Spencer put into the novel. Landmarks are named after females, the fairy tales and nursery rhymes also have strong female influences.
The plot itself is filled with clichés. If it weren't for the gender switch, they would be unforgivable. By far the most interesting part was when the Whistlers came to the palace for the first time and the actual courtship began. The ending mad dash and subsequent `damsel rescue' paled for me.
After a bit, it did get a little creepy especially when the author would write the man having bows in his long hair and acting like a silly little - well-- girl. What is the point of writing a female dominated society when all the women end up doing is acting like men?
Anyway, my advice to readers who are thinking about this book is to once again remember that this is a romance novel... and a rather silly one at that. The whole idea of the gender switch is silly in itself so you need to approach the book with a very light heart and be ready to forgive a few small plot holes.

Book Description
Eighteen-year-old Stony De Coco is trapped in a working-class world that offers him only one way of proving his loyalty, and no way out.
Customer Reviews:
Should Have Been Better.......2007-10-06
I almost titled my review Could Have Been Better, but I changed the first word to Should, instead. Having read most of Richard Price's books, I know that he is capable of doing better than this. BLOOD BROTHERS is not as gripping as his first work, THE WANDERERS, nor as compelling as subsequent works, such as the staggeringly good CLOCKERS or even SAMARITAN. Although BLOOD BROTHERS is OK and I would recommend it to any fan of Price's, it simply does not measure up to the standard Price set for himself.
BLOOD BROTHERS covers much of the same ground as THE WANDERERS. Again, the reader feels the alienation and hopelessness of the world inhabited by the characters. The grit is so ever-present that washing one's hands after putting the book down is not out of the question. Yet the ground covered is a little too familiar. There is not much here that feels original. I am reminded of the trouble of being a good rock band. You need a sound that distinguishes your band from all the rest, but also need to make sure your songs do not all sound alike.
The main thing that distinguishes this novel from THE WANDERERS is that, whereas THE WANDERERS looks at several characters as part of a group, BLOOD BROTHERS sharpens that focus to a single main character, Stony De Coco. Such a shift in focus should have been sufficient to explore new ground and make the book more interesting than it is. Yet although the reader may feel for Stony, it is not enough to raise the story above mediocre.
One thing sorely missed are those standout scenes that made THE WANDERERS so chilling. As I mention in my review of that book, the venereal sandwich, the rooftop scene and the bowling game really stick in the reader's head. No similar scenes exist here. Although Price showed fantastic early promise and later grew tremendously as a writer, the middle books show, if not a collapse, at least some stumbling along the way.
Dark yet poetic view of Italian-American Working Class life.......2007-05-06
No matter how miserable you think your life is, just be thankful you weren't living in New Jersey circa 1974 with the DeCoco clan and their circle. What a hopeless, nihilistic existence. Nobody here is going anywhere fast. They all seem to be in the grip of emotional traumas which none of them have the requisite education to explain and spend their whole lives trying to nullify through various means - alcohol, casual sex, whatever. Richard Price is one of the GREAT novelists of this or any other time. Just when you think that you've read every possible word that anyone could say about the human condition, along comes a blindingly intelligent talent such as he who opens your mind to something fresh that you had never previously grasped. What he gives you in his novels is absolute authenticity and understanding of what goes on in the souls of such folk. And he does it in a sensitive yet tough manner.
BloodBrothers is a novel that left me profoundly shaken after I'd read it. Although I preferred the surrealism and humor found in The Wanderers (the humor and racism are toned down slightly here), this book has more structure, is more of a novel in the classic sense of the word. They both have their own attributes and ultimately, I would encourage anyone who appreciates truth, humor and brilliant writing to seek both of these novels.
I don't know how he does it but..........2006-01-03
Richard Price is one of my favorite authors, and I have read all of his novels. This is by far my most favorite (and it was the last one I read!). This story really hit home with me...Stony has to chose between doing what he loves for s*** pay, or have a well-paying job that he loathes. When I read this book, I was going through a similar situation, and most of us at least have issues with our families that run deep and complicated. Something about the way Price makes his characters so true to life...I feel that in Blood Brothers even more so than his other books. After I finished the book I felt like I was going to run into one of the characters on the street someday. Highly recommended. If you're new to Richard Price, get this one first! ...but you will get hooked and have to buy all the rest eventually ;)
Although not his best seller, possibly his best.......2001-08-29
Critics repeat ad-nauseam that Price is good with dialogue and Blood Brothers is no exception, propelled sometimes almost exclusively by conversation. It's similar in subject to The Wanderers but the scope is much more focused this time around. And unlike The Wanderers it doesn't boil down to a few vignettes. After finding long-awaited success with Clockers and Freedomland, Price's earlier work is being re-released, getting it the attention it deserves. Blood Brothers is maybe superior to his later work, possessing a frankness that makes it both accessible and intimate.
Highly entertaining and very real.......1998-10-15
A very amusing book. It is highly entertaining with great characters and a great plot. An enjoyable read. If you want a serious read, ignore but if you want an entertaing read, go for it. Read it anyway!

Great book for the little one.......2002-12-09
It is just great for our situation. We just got a baby boy. Not only did this book helped our 5-year-old daughter with reading it also helped her to cope with and to understand the changes that come with the new baby. The stickers encourage her to read independently and give her a sense of accomplishment. The word list on the back of the book helps her to see the similarity between words and helps her with spellings. I found this series of books thru a fundraising activity. I am glad I bought them.
I had to force myself to finish this book!!!.......2002-08-03
A friend loaned us a (different) book entitled OUR NEW BABY written by Beth Atchison, and while browsing in [local store], this book caught my eye. Wanting a similar book to keep for ourselves, I picked up this book and read it. I was extremely disappointed not only in this books content but that someone would write such a negative book for children. A new baby can be a delicate situation in the minds of little ones and it is my opinion that books which reassure the child and help them to feel positively about the new baby would be best. The first half of this book, left me with a very negative feeling, with such lines as "my new baby is a pest.... Mom likes him the best. It wasn't until the final pages that this book turned those negative images into positive ones. I felt that the damage had already been done. Please find this book and read it for your self, before you decide to buy it. It may work for your child, but I put it back on the shelf, not willing to take that chance with ours.
Excellent.......2001-03-12
It has been very hard for me to find just the right books for my kindergartner to read. I wanted to find some books with a plot but not to many overwhelming words. This entire series of books has been JUST what I have been looking for. They are not to simple but they do have a story line to them. They come with star stickers and he enjoys reading them becausue every time you read the story you can put a star on the inside front cover. He wants to fill up the inside cover with stars!! The reward stickers are a great idea and have definately encouraged him to read and then read again.

Monk novels are the best!.......2006-08-13
As a history buff, I enjoy Victorian novels and the Monk novels are both history and mystery.
Padded writing but gritty atmosphere.......2004-02-03
Perry's Victorian London mystery, featuring the amnesiac ex-Inspector William Monk and the Florence Nightingale-trained nurse Hester Latterly, revolves around the disappearance of a model husband and father of five with a successful business.
Angus Stonefield disappears on a visit to his vicious and violent twin brother in the slums and Angus' lovely wife is convinced that this time Caleb - the twin - has murdered her husband. While investigating, Monk runs into Hester Latterly setting up a make-shift hospital to deal with a serious outbreak of typhoid in the filthy and overcrowded slums.
Hester and Monk's relationship remains tensely ambivalent and Monk's bitter interior monologues become tediously repetitious. This is a heavily padded novel with an overworked plot device but Perry's fans will enjoy her gritty depiction of hopeless poverty and stark class divisions.
One of Perry's best novels.......2004-01-18
A lady instructs ex-inspector Monk to find evidence of her husband's death. She is convinced that Angus, a devoted husband and father has been murdered by his twin-brother Caleb, a true monster by all accounts. Her means of susbsistence are threatened because she and her five children cannot inherit Angus' fortune unless she is able to produce a body. Monk understands her existential dread. Of course, there is always the possibility that Angus went deliberately underground or that his wife had a hand in it. He is helped by nurse Hester Latterly, who is very busy with typhoid patients, rich and poor, and by star-attorney Oliver Rathbone who pleads Mrs. Angus' cause before court. Monk goes also through a private nightmare: he falls in love with a charming lady who encourages his advances. Suddenly she tears her clothes up in full view of many high-born eyewitnesses and runs away screaming...But before she is able to round off her scheme and ruin Monk's career, Hester resorts to a very artful ruse...
One of Perry's best. Gripping, psychologically revealing, and sociocritical. Perry is as good as Dickens when she exposes grievances. In one scene she reveals that the lower classes of the time owned just one pot: for cooking, doing the laundry, washing the baby and as nightpot...Hester's counteroffensive against the libellous lady will make you shake with laughter - and wince...
An enthralling read with a disappointing ending.......2002-04-28
I love Anne Perry's ability to twist and wind through a story and keep you hanging until the last pages. I also love her well researched novels that offer such exsquisite detail about Victorian London, especially the class differences (particularly in this book). Unfortunately I found the conclusion of this novel truly unoriginal and disappointing. The result it ended with was a thought that had ocurred to me earlier in the novel, but I doubted it just because of the lack of inspiration it required. I am more fond of the Monk/Latterly series than the Pitts series, and "Cain..." is one of the better stories among the Perry novels, but I would definitely read it knowing in advance that the ending doesn't compare with the rest of the story. If you want a truly excellent Anne Perry book, read "The Face of a Stranger" (the first Monk/Latterly novel). A great read.
Cain His Brother.......2002-03-08
This is the best book by this author that I have read so far.
Perry's writing style is unobtrusive, somewhat given to unclear pronouns, but generally solid.
I found it interesting that nothing seemed to differ between this setting, in 1859, and the setting of the author's Pitt novels, in the late 19th century, except that the Pitts have telephones. I wonder how authentic that is. I found no obvious errors, except that, in keeping with the rest of Perry's books, the women seem very independent for the period.
Perry has come up with what must be one of the best characterization hooks ever invented. William Monk suffers from amnesia. He has reason to think he was an unpleasant person, a person capable of wronging others, in the past. But... he can never know what, exactly, he did. I would have liked to see a few more original touches in his *current* character, but it's still a fascinating idea.
The plot of Cain his Brother is outstanding. A minor consistency error here and there does not detract from its drama. A man has murdered his twin brother -- or has he? I thought I had the secret figured out several times, but I was wrong. But when the answer was revealed, it made perfect sense. Perry sometimes has surprise twists out of nowhere at the end of her books, but this time she got it exactly right. I remained unclear on one thing --Ravenstone's motivation -- but that may be my oversight.
This is a very entertaining historical mystery which I strongly recommend.

Customer Reviews:
A very poorly done book : not "als ik kan".......2006-02-15
I never write reviews but I really feel ripped off by this book and I would like others to be able to avoid that.
I bought this book after acquiring an early Stickley Brothers dining room set (table, chairs, buffet, china cabinet) and I wanted to find out more about them. Where better to start than with a book called "Stickley Brothers Furniture?"
If you know anything about Stickley furniture (and I don't profess to be an expert), you know that there were several brothers who manufactured arts and crafts furniture, under several company names. There was Gustav Stickley, Stickley Brothers Furniture Company, L & JG Stickley Furniture Company, Stickley/Brandt Furniture Company, etc.
Out of 238 pages in the book, 126 are devoted to Gustav Stickley and 31 devoted to Stickley Brothers. The rest are devoted to very spotty coverage of L & JG Stickley and Charles Stickley (who gets all of 8 pages). So the book titled "Stickley Brothers Furniture" devotes maybe 15 percent of its content to Stickley Brothers furniture.
While the illustrations are very attractive (evenly lit, in focus, no distracting background), they are apparently all lifted from a single auction house's catalogs. This is clearly with the auction house's consent as there is a lengthy piece about how great the auctioneers are (presumably the price for using their photos).
There is virtually no real effort at scholarship or teaching ways to "identify and value" the furniture, though the prices realized at auction (no date given) are included.
So for your money, you get virtually nothing but the catalog entries for a miscellaneous lot of furniture that happened to go through that particular auction house's inventory.
This is not a book that will increase your understanding of Stickley furniture (and particularly Stickley Brothers furniture) unless you have never read anything about this topic in your life. And if that's the case, you would be much better served with another book. There are quite a lot of good ones out there.
Wow!.......2005-04-15
The graphics in this volume are outstanding! The book is a highly informative volume for Stickley furniture.

Book Description
Set in 1850, Three Golden Rivers tells the tale of the four orphaned Bayard children--Jenny, Stephen, Carlotta, and Mady--who must leave their farm and move to the city in order to support themselves. They find a home on the South Side of Pittsburgh in a shanty, known locally as a clinger, on the steep hillside overlooking the rivers and the city. Young readers will gravitate to this remarkable story full of the details of life in a robust nineteenth-century city, in the words and experience of four children left to fend for themselves. Infused with the famous real-life characters of Andrew Carnegie, Charles Dickens, Jenny Lind and Stephen Foster, Three Golden Rivers is a natural segue to further study on these famous personalities, as well as a chance for young readers to learn much about the folklore, commerce, and ecology of the mid-nineteenth century in a booming industrial center. Three Golden Rivers is filled with fascinating bits of history such as the kind of food people ate in the mid-19th century and how it was preserved without refrigeration, the thriving commerce of the riverboats, the glass making industry that made Pittsburgh a leader in glass production, and a glimpse at the early development of the steel mills that would come to define Pittsburgh for the next century and a half. Three Golden Rivers will delight young readers as they get caught up in the lives of these independent and energetic youngsters on their own in the city. It will also provide educators and parents with an endless source of information and ideas for educational projects and approaches for discovering the history of the last century.
