The price of Magic.......2007-10-10
"Magic's Price" is the darkest and most gripping of the Last Herald-Mage trilogy. It is heart-wrenching,and the closing epilogue is at once satisfying and poignant.
In the final book,Vanyel is older, wiser, and still dealing with his grief from losing Tylendel. He has had many lovers, even fathering children with women despite his own attraction to men. Tylendel is his lifebonded. Mercedes Lackey solves the problem of Vanyel's loneliness with Stefen,a Bard with the power to sing away pain. Stefen is young enough to be Vanyel's son,yet he is Tylendel reincarnate (though Tylendel was slightly older when they first met) Stefen's courtship of Vanyel is at once romantic and humorous. The rarely humored Vanyel finally laughs, finding love in the process.
However, tragedy darkens their blissful world. Vanyel's beloved Aunt Savil is murdered,as are other Herald-Mages. Vanyel is brutally gang-raped. While the villain is vaguely defined (a common problem in Lackey's writing),Vanyel gives the final battle his all. In the epilogue, however,Lackey shows that death does not have the last word.
When Mercedes Lackey created the character of Vanyel, she said she intended for him to be gay, connecting it to him being the Last Herald-Mage. Though he has fathered children,he dies without heirs of his own and a family. He finds love with Stefen, who mirrors himself at a younger age;paradoxically,Vanyel sees him like his father, and emulates his mother. In some ways,Vanyel drowns in his own image like Narcissus, yet in the end he is redeemed through his ultimate sacrifice. In the beginning,Vanyel was a vain peacock;in the end,he is the fiery phoenix.
An Utterly Engrossing Series!.......2007-03-31
I picked up this series because I was in the process of writing a fantasy novel with a gay hero and I wanted to see what other works were out there. I had never read Ms. Lackey's work, so I didn't know what to expect. I was not just pleasantly surprised by this trilogy, I was completely captivated by it and very sad when I reached the final page. The plot is interesting and the pace is quick. The characters, especially the hero Vanyel, are extremely sympathetic, primarily due to the fact that they are so flawed. Some may find the romance a bit sappy, but I'm the first to admit that I dig that kind of thing and you'll see it in my own novels as well.Orphan's Quest (Chronicles of Firma, Book One) Best of all for me, though, was the fact that although her hero is unapologetically gay, the series does not become mired in its "gayness" as so many other works of gay-themed fiction I have read.
This trilogy gave me a great deal of inspiration to push on with my own fantasy aspirations. I owe Misty a big hug if we ever meet face to face. I highly recommend these three books. Whether you're gay or straight, you'll find them an excellent read and, like me, you'll be sorry to reach that last page.
Best and worst of the trilogy.......2006-02-27
I thought the story was better and more enjoyable than the first two. BUT, it also describes the homosexuality in greater detail.
I tolerated the first two because of the tasteful use of "fade to black" before any love scenes. This one goes into more detail -- though still tame by "romance novel" standards.
The worst was the depiction of a gang-rape. Uncomfortable to read.
The hero was still too moody and sulky for me and too dense to see the good in his life. Also, too careless in some very important decisions.
A reasonably satisfying ending.
I'm glad I read it. I will not be recommending it to my children, however.
Excellent!.......2006-01-20
This triology along with the arrows of the queen triology are among my favorites of the Valdemar series. Full of magic, action and meaningful relationships along with an exciting plot that leaves you wanting more.
beautiful but flawed.......2005-10-30
Like the hero, Vanyel, this book was beautiful but also deeply flawed. The violence and destruction done to the hero was over the top and needlessly graphic. However, the characters (except for the garden variety villain) were likeable. I especially liked the relationship between Vanyel and Stephan, his boyfriend. The author made you want to root for them and feel the anguish of each when they were separated.
Book Description
Making, keeping, and enjoying money isn’t just about investments, salaries, inheritances, or dividends, according to Deborah Price. It’s also about the games people play around money and their character type in relation to it. In Money Magic, Price shows readers how to stop making fear-based money choices and how to transform their relationship with money to obtain the wealth they desire. The book is structured around eight “types”: the Innocent (the ostrich approach); the Victim (blaming circumstances); the Warrior (conquering money); the Martyr (always rescuing someone); the Fool (gambler looking for a windfall); the Creator/Artist (regarding money as evil); the Tyrant (controlling through money); and the Magician (benefiting spiritually and financially from money). The Magician is the book’s ideal, and Price offers exercises to help readers attain it. “Outlines how one can become a ‘Money Magician,’ bringing one’s attitude toward money in better alignment with deeper life goals.” — Publishers Weekly

Book Description
You will learn that the whole purpose of the alchemical process is to change our thinking and feeling natures, and move up to a higher frequency in consciousness and see what we want in life, clearing the channels for Spirit and getting us back into the natural order of the universe, where we see infinite possibilities of life.

Price emphasises what he has said in other books.......2002-03-18
They say that the human subconscious must hear a message over and over again until it takes root in the consciousness and becomes a habit. John Randolph Price has put together a nice little tome that really draws, from what I can see, about six or seven of his previous works. It is a nice synopsis book, but if you are like me, and have read and enjoyed Price's work over the years, you realize that he has said it all before and with a little more detail than you can find in this small volume.
Dynamic Alchemy.......2000-10-10
The author of The Jesus Code and fifteen other books has opened for modern eyes another ancient secret formula expressing the eternal paths to self-mastery and co-creation. Price says that conflict and scarcity cannot exist in a universe of love and infinite abundance. So, create your own program for greater joy and fulfillment in life. Realize the power of the mind and the holistic unity of spirit and matter. Allow the Creative Principle to work by dynamically materializing your ideals into the world of form. Price has restored "dynamic alchemy" which began disappearing in the mid-1800's when a particular teaching was promulgated with the specific purpose of proving the objective world was only an illusion. The art of Hermetic Alchemy deals in the mastery of mental forces; the changing of mental vibrations into other vibrations, not changing lead into gold but something that image conveys to our imaginations. We may truly be spirit inhabiting physical bodies, but we do exist temporarily in this material universe. John Randolph Price takes us from the Alchemical Sun to Saturn, and then to Isis, to show us that being prosperous is equivalent to a life of beauty, happiness, and freedom. Burn through to see the eternal truths living in the life of the spirit. Enlightened living comes from working with a spiritual discipline of whatever technique helps you to transcend the physical self and personal ego. Be the Light! Move to the fulfillment of your dreams. Live, enjoy, and prosper!
A Blending.......2000-09-17
This little book is a real treasure of information weaving the archetypal energies into everyday life. If you are a student of Tarot, Astrology and Alice Bailey writings Mr. Price's reflections will allow deeper insights into your own alchemical process.

Fantasy With Passion.......2005-08-15
Mercedes Lackey's Last herald Mage series consists of three different books, originally published separately: Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise and Magic's Price. They describe the life of one man, from adolescence to maturity, who lives in a world peopled with kings, warriors, fantastical creatures and all of the things that readers of fantasy have come to love and identify with.
One slight twist: Vanyel, the story's protagonist, just happens to be gay.
From the titles, the stories obviously have to do with magic and the people who wield it. Lackey writes with great passion, and it is her love for the world she's created in these books that makes them worthwhile. Her system of magic isn't overly complex, but it is well thought out, and has appeal to a wide range of readers.
Rather than focusing on epic battles and the machinations of vast armies, Lackey concentrates on character development and interpersonal relationships. One gets a sense that she spent time getting to know each character and giving that character a piece of herself.
The first book deals with Vanyel's coming of age. I won't go into detail, because spoiling the plot is hardly the point of a reader review. I will say that where Lackey fails is that she sometimes is reduced to the overly dramatic. When something slightly funny happens, the characters shove fists in mouths to keep from laughing, and can barely stand up for fear of splitting sides. When something bad happens, it's always the worst thing imaginable. But such is adolescence, and one comes to enjoy Vanyel's strengths, be annoyed with his faults and earnestly hope he will mature. Which he does.
Aside from creating a very competent feel for magic use, from the perspective of a reader of fantasy, the plots to each of the three stories are interesting and well written. The plots move, rather than just serving as an excuse for another writer to extrapolate upon what she thinks magic is.
On top of all of that, a love story that touches the heart, if you're a reader who enjoys that sort of thing.
Mercedes Lackey writes with grace and style. If you are a reader of fantasy who enjoys works by writers such as Anne McCaffrey or Terry Brooks, the Last Herald Mage series is definitely something you should consider putting on your reading list.

The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a house. Book Description
Can a $10,000 investment yield $1,000,000 in a year? In five years? If so, what is the risk involved?
These are the kinds of questions to which this work is addressed. Such fantastic results are possible in the stock market. Individual issues fluctuate widely enough and often enough to permit this and more. Techniques are presented here that put an average yield on invested capital of 10% per month, well within the realm of possibility. Compounding profits at this rate, such a yield can return $1,000,000 on a $10,000 investment within 50 months.
An actual trading experiment will be described using these principles which produced an 8.9% yield per transaction--every 9.7 days. Such a yield, if continued, compounds $10,000 to $1,000,000 in 15 months. If such results can be attained in the market -- why isn't everyone doing it?
The answer is complex, but the elements are simple: effort, knowledge and psychological barriers. Any goal this worthwhile requires time and effort. Most investors, amateur and professional do not have the kind of analytical background needed to shear through rumor, opinion, and adage to get at the basis of why stock prices change. And finally, even with knowledge in hand, many investors lack training in the emotion-logic balance required for success.
Nevertheless, all of these obstacles can be overcome. It is the purpose of this book to provide you with the essentials. The results are yours if you care to apply yourself with sufficient intensity. Investment operations will be presented here in a deliberately unorthodox manner. We will turn our backs firmly on all cliches, adages, and market lore that will not withstand critical scrutiny. Where necessary, we will not hesitate to form new ones that do fit the facts.
You will find here that the big money in investing stems from the principle of "profit compounding:---of short-term trades. It is further shown that this potential cannot be exploited in an optimum manner without a large improvement in transaction-timing capability that cannot be achieved using tradional investment methods.
You will be exposed to: a concept of profit maximization; a model of stock price motion with prediction implications; an explanation of why chart patterns form---and how to use this knowledge to your profit; step-by-step methods for using the price-motion model to generate definite "wait," "buy," "hold," "sell," "sell short," "cover short," and "protect profit" signals; an explanation of why moving averages work and how to design your own for use in transaction timing; a complete trading method: how to select issues, how to analyze them for action signals, and how to improve your chances of turning and keeping a profit; the extent to which you should be concerned by chance factors, whether or not you should sell in case of war or financial crisis; the reasons why psychological considerations can affect your profits and what you can do about it; an introduction to numerical analysis and spectral analysis, upon which the results on the book are based.
The problems of trading techniques and methods are dealt with directly. Enough methods and references are included to permit further research if desired.

Can anyone who's read the book please answer this.......2007-06-18
The queston pertains to page 61. At the top of the page it says; 13.9 week cycle is 7.4 weeks along -hard down, 4.6 week cycle is 3.6 weeks along hard down. How is the conclusion reached that these are hard down and the triangle at the top of figure III-9 will perform a downside breakout. I'm really scratching my head on this one. My email is michaelaz@cox.net. Thanks for your help, Mike
Must read for those who want to develop a TA system!.......2004-07-06
i'm glad that most who reviewed it here got it! it is a little mathematically beefy. even if you can't grasp the heavy math of the last chapters, the layman can benefit from the graphical buy/sell/hold signals and easy offset moving average methodology. while this book doesn't provide the holy grail, it gives you "willie wonka's golden ticket" into the wall street candy factory...
It works.......2004-06-08
Reading this book gave me a real understanding of the stock market movement. Now, I look at indicators, patterns, etc. with a different pair of eyes. The book explains convicingly that stock market moves in cycles. I am now using it successfully in my trading. With it, I have the ability to estimate market tops and bottoms frequently. My analysis for Nasdaq is posted in http://www.geocities.com/zentex3/ if you want to see evidence of me putting this into practice. Overall, the book is enjoyable read. The mathematics can be difficult but I do not use Fourier Analysis or any advanced maths to put his method into practice. In fact, I actually used very basic maths and put it in my excel spreadsheet and the envelopes are plotted automatically. I just turned the logic he uses for visual analysis into basic rules.
This is a break through book.......2003-12-17
Many people still don't understand what J.M. did. They compare it to already beaten channel analysis or Moving average analysis. It isn't what Hurst used, it is how and why he used it is important. Hurst was the first to point the relation of proportionality of time/price swings with the periodicity of indicators as well as synchronicity of time cycles and he laid out mathematical foundation for computerized measurements. This requires some technical/programming skill and what's more important good sense of proportion.
But even you are a good programmer, but without good sense of proportion you'll go in circles and don't get it (I met many rocket scientists like that). So first of all you should be good observer of life with some mathematical skill to fully comprehend what J.M. Hurst introduced. His statement of 90% success isn't an exaggeration; it is rather conservative estimation assuming human error. His methods have potential to be 100%.
(And even you aren't a programmer, but understand Hurst ideas, you can tweak existing charting package to do the job for you, that would take some time, but possible)
What he discovered in stock analysis is comparable to a perpetual motion in physics.
After completing his work J.M. mysteriously disappeared. No he isn't dead, rather silenced. This book is already out of print and I wouldn't be surprised if it disappears again. Remember Wall Street doesn't want you to win; they reserve this right for themselves...
A classic.......2003-07-07
Nicely written, but unfortunately becoming dated. Cycles are almost common knowledge now, with the new wave of time based traders off Fibonacci. Also, MA envelopes and other variations of bands are incredibly popular now. I think his real edge is the length of time of the cycles. Most people will not have the patience to wait months for a setup and then hold on to the trade for several more months. That allows the longer cycles to go the course, while letting the shorter traders fight over the smaller wiggles. The claims of 90% winning trades is also questionable, but when you do catch the relative cycle high or low.. it sure does look brilliant.

The Sterkarm Handshake
ASIN: 0060721979
Release Date: 2004-10-05 |
Book Description
Andrea Mitchell has never felt as if she belongs in the 21st century. She's too fat, too clumsy, and too plain. So when she's offered the chance to take the Time Tube back to the 16th century -- and back to Per, the young Sterkarm warrior she fell in love with once before -- she doesn't hesitate. The lovely, boisterous, and crude Sterkarms have always made her feel welcome and at home. Maybe this time she'll even stay for good.
But things on the 16th side are not what Andrea expected them to be. Per doesn't know who she is, and a wedding between the Sterkarms and their enemies, the Grannams, ends in bloodshed and confusion. Even when Andrea discovers it's the Elves who have betrayed them all, no one wants to believe her. She may have made the biggest -- and the deadliest -- mistake of her life.
In this blistering sequel to her award-winning the sterkarm handshake, Susan Price weaves a riveting tale of revenge, deceit, and love, set against a backdrop of warring clans and brutal passions.
Customer Reviews:
"For There's Sweeter Rest, on a True Love's Breast...".......2006-05-09
The novel that preceded this, "The Sterkarm Handshake" was an explosive, riveting and nail-biting story based around the concept of the cultural clash that would follow 21st century time travellers attempting to exploit the riches and opportunities that the past had to offer. The corporation FUP had completed a Time Tube that would transport employees into the past of a different dimension, in order to explore the possibilities that the unspoilt land offered. Only one thing stood in their way; the fierce and treacherous Sterkarms who were not prepared to stop their feuding and troublemaking just because a bunch of "Elves" asked them to.
The scientific ramifications of a time travelling device was not the focus of the novel; instead Susan Price focused solely on the interactions between past and present, and the impossible odds that her protagonist Andrea Mitchell had to face in attempting to negotiate between such uncontrollable powers. As the winner of the Guardian's Children's Fiction Prize and short listed for the Carnegie Medal, "The Sterkarm Handshake" comes very highly recommended.
But how does the sequel live up to the original? Sadly, like most sequels, not as well. "A Sterkarm Kiss" begins about a year after the Time Tube was closed down. Andrea now works as a barmaid and has lost all hope of ever seeing Per, her 16th century love, again. But then the extraordinary happens; her old boss, the greedy, immoral and cowardly James Windsor approaches her and offers her back her old job as liaison to the Sterkarms. The Tube is up and running again, but this time the old mistakes won't be repeated. This time the Tube connects into a new dimension; where the "Elves" can begin afresh with their treatment of the Sterkarms.
This time, they can use their prior knowledge of the Sterkarm leaders to manipulate them and come across as peacemakers rather than an invading force. Brokering a marriage between the Sterkarms and their main foes, the Grannams, is their first step in securing peace and a stable environment in which to exploit the land. Andrea - despite some reservations - eventually accepts Windsor's offer; the chance of seeing Per (albeit one who has never met her before) too great. But as always, there is treachery at work...
The idea that they travel into a different dimension, to meet a whole "new" set of the same characters in the 16th century felt at first like a bit of a cheat, as if Price had given herself a "clean slate" in order to explore an entirely new scenario rather than build on the established situation of the previous book. However, by the end of the novel it becomes clear that there is a reason behind the change in dimension which eventually pays off - it may just be a little frustrating at first if you're eager to get updated on the Sterkarms of the first book.
The novel is geared toward teenagers, but whereas "The Sterkarm Handshake" could be read by younger readers as well as older ones, I'd be a little more hesitant to put this in the hands of a thirteen year old, as there are several scenes of violence, sex and language. These types of things were also present in "Handshake", but not quite as graphically described, and there are also several deaths of established characters which come across as rather pointless (though perhaps this seeming pointlessness is precisely the point about death that Price is trying to make).
And then there's the end; to call it a "cliff-hanger" is an understatement, as it seems to end mid-chapter. With this being the case, and without any third installment in place, it's difficult to understand the reasons behind writing a sequel, especially when "The Sterkarm Handshake" was wrapped up so neatly and poignantly. Price's writing talents are still on clear display here, but unless there's a third "Sterkarm" book to continue what's left unsaid here, I recommend
Sterkarm Kiss.......2005-08-26
Andrea and Per return in this sequel to A Sterkarm Handshake.
I still don't really understand the rationale for marketing these graphic, brutal and not very cheerful books as young adult novels -- not that I have any complaints at all about any of the aforesaid qualities, but usually young adult books, whatever tribulations their protagonists face, have a cheerier worldview. Whatever.
Anyway, though I enjoyed this book, in which the 16th century Scottish Borderer Sterkarms are cozened and threatened by 21st century business interests and Andrea is used alternately as lure and spy before being forced to choose her loyalties, I didn't think it was quite as strong as the first book. The worldbuilding and characterization were less detailed than in the first book, but more importantly the pacing felt off to me, with the whole thing a bit rushed and underdeveloped and the book coming to an end before it seemed as though it should. I still think it was worth reading.
Time Travel Fan.......2005-06-09
After reading a plethora of time travel, juvenile and adult, I find A Sterkham Kiss, and Susan Price's first Sterkham novel, The Sterkham Handshake, the very best in its genre. It's an absolute can't-put-down story, with vivid insight to 16th Century Britain (albeit another dimension of 16th Century Britain)and captivating characters. A thoroughly riviting novel that won't fail to entertain the young adult+ reader.
Good, but not as good as STERKARM HANDSHAKE.......2005-02-10
First, I'd say you really must read the first book in order to enjoy this one & to "get" it. Ok, that being said, I felt that the in the first book the plot & characters were much more developed & realized. In this book, the reader is just thrown into the action & there is much less character/plot development, instead there is a lot of violence as noted in one of the editorial reviews.
I also was disappointed in the ending. It is, indeed, a cliff-hanger & one can only hope that the auther plans a 3rd installment...one that is a bit more slow-paced & thoughtful (like the first) rather than nonstop fighting & slaughter as muc of this one was. Still, I felt her ending was a cop-out & would have rather that this book been wrapped up a bit better...with a 3rd installment still to come.
Even having made these points, I did enjoy much of the book & look forward to reading more about Andrea & Per in the future. Their love story is what really keeps my interest, & I hope to see more of that angle if there are future books.

"Beware of shaking hands with a Sterkarm!" goes the folk saying. Why the warning? The members of this wild 16th-century Scottish clan are left-handed, and while they smile and offer the right hand, the left wields a dagger.
When a 21st-century mega-corporation opens a Time Tube to the 16th century, the stiff-backed CEO finds his plans for exploiting the mineral and tourism possibilities of the ancient English-Scottish border frustrated by the Sterkarms--raiding parties of men he regards as primitive animals.
On the other side of the Time Tube, anthropologist Andrea Mitchell has been sent to live with the Sterkarms to be the corporation's informant and translator. There she is surprised to find herself admired for her generous curves and accepted warmly by the volatile and affectionate--but intermittently murderous--clansmen. When her lover, Per, is grievously wounded on a raid, she persuades Old Toorkild, the chief, to allow his handsome and adored son to be transported to the 21st century for healing. But when Per awakes in a world four centuries ahead of his own, his terror and suspicions of treachery bring down a wild collision between heartless technology and a ferocious people skilled in passionate defense of their life and lands.
Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize in England, Susan Price's The Sterkarm Handshake--a richly textured love story, a vivid and sometimes humorous portrayal of confrontation between cultures, and a thumping good page-turner--should find enthusiastic fans among teen-fantasy and time-travel buffs. Book Description
"Beware of shaking hands with a Sterkarm."
For generations, the Sterkarms plundered the Scottish border. They were known for shaking on a bargain with a dagger clutched firmly in one hand -- and for not keeping their promises.
Now people from the 21st century have found a way to travel to the Sterkarms' time. The 16th century is rich in natural resources and historical detail, perfect for the modern investor or scholar. Anthropologist Andrea Mitchell finds more than research there, as she falls in love with a young Sterkarm warrior. But when he realizes how powerful and destructive the visitors truly are, he vows to keep them from his land forever. And in the bloody battle that ensues, Andrea must choose between her love and her world.

Just okay..........2007-06-06
Have been looking forward to reading this book for a while, as it has received many positive reviews here and elsewhere. What started out as a compelling story line, quickly turned into tedium and annoyance mixed with flashes of action. I kept telling myself to pick it up again, to keep going. Alas, halfway through, I gave up for good. A disappointment.
Capitalism clashing with clan warfare.......2007-02-24
I loved this book! My only wish is that more historical detail for the weapons and equipment had been present, such as found in Richard Cornwell's "Sharpe" series.
"A Sterkarm Handshake".......2006-05-31
I recently read the novel "A Sterkarm Handshake" and I thought it was one of the most wonderful books I have ever read...and trust me, I've read quite as few!!! I love the clever way that Susan Price can write how she can refer to the real world 21st and 16th side without really saying what happened or what she meant. Susan Price is a great novel and she's up there with J.K.Rowling, J.R.R.Tolkien and C.S.Lewis. Susan Price has already won two awards for each of the books she has written "A Sterkarm Handshake" and "A Sterkarm Kiss". Although I must say, "A Sterkarm Kiss" though it was good, wasn't as good as "A Sterkarm Handshake." If you enjoyed "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman, you'll love this book. If you loved this book you'll love "His Dark Materials Trilogy" by Philip Pullman!!!
There are better books out there.......2006-05-03
The concept of this book is interesting, but I don't find the execution to be well done, especially in terms of characterization and writing.
We're supposed to accept the romance between Andrea and Per without ever seeing anything to support it. Windsor is more than just a bad boss, he's all the bad bosses ever concieved melded into one completely unbelievalbe person. It's impossible to think he could actually run a success company. His only purpose is to cause trouble and manhandle the plot towards whatever scene Price has in mind next. Bryce is initially the level-headed, logical security chief, but by the end of the book he's acting like one of the rent-a-cops he originally had such disdain for.
The coincidence with Joe Sterkarm is so outlandish, it makes the rest of the book impossible to take seriously. The overall plot is predictable, especially with the foreshadowing story about the elf-swan near the beginning. We already know what's going to happen; all that's left is to see which unlikeable characters die before it's over.
Quite frankly, the puppet strings of the author are all too visible throughout the book. If you're looking for time travel with a cultural emphasis, I recommend "The Doomsday Book" and its follow-up "To Say Nothing of the Dog", both by Connie Willis. I guarantee you'll be happier for having read them than you will for The Sterkarm Handshake.
Stop Whining Andrea... .......2005-12-31
Really not worth the read. It started off as a cute little romance/sci-fi, you know, the type of time travel story, where people from two different times meet, fall in love and such. However, the difference was that in this book, the main character Andrea isn't even likable. So she's overweight, but somehow, the author uses her weight to justify all of her character flaws. Andrea is in love with Per, and a large part of it seems to be because Per's "hot," and she believes she can't do better in the twenty first century. She is able to kiss Per even after she watches him kill security guards who were her friends. It shows how shallow she is, because Per is not honest, treats her like dung when he wants to, and a killer. Throughout the book, she is portrayed as a self-sacrificing woman who would do any thing for the man she loves which was annoying because the relationship was more of a "fat-woman-being-flattered-by-the-attentions- of-hot-but-violent-and-sexist-teenager" fling rather than love. Andrea is portrayed as shallow, weak, disgustingly infatuated until she is beyond reason or morals. I would try to be sympathetic, but after pages and pages of her moaning about morals, and doing the right thing and then throwing herself at Per right after he murders her "friends" was too much. It seems that all the stereotypes of being overweight are placed on her: she has no self-confidence, very shallow and well, sort of dimwitted and overall weak.
Victor, her boss, was portrayed as the villain in the story, however it was much easier to sympathize with him. He is a business man, and although, he has some serious flaws, it is possible to see why he would get fed up with the Sterkarms and Andrea. He is disgusted by the Sterkarms, who rob his men, even when they had negotiated a treaty, and who kill in barbarious ways. I thought that was reasonable, compared to Andrea, who sees the Sterkarms wearing watches from the 21st century, which she knew were stolen, but doesn't say anything. Although Victor is selfish and greedy, he makes sense and is practical, whereas Andrea plays out to be a ditsy, hysterical girl with her first crush. If you are looking for a book with a heroine, don't read this one - its seems to bring the feminist movement back a few decades.
The plot was violent, and some of the nasty parts were unescessary. The author did a good job of using the vernacular, and describing the conditions of the time though. And I thought sending Per to the present was very amusing. The main weakness of the book is its main character, and if you are a feminist, keep away - you'll hate her as much as I do.
