Book Description
Bean's past was a battle just to survive. He first appeared on the streets of Rotterdam, a tiny child with a mind leagues beyond anyone else. He knew he could not survive through strength; he used his tactical genius to gain acceptance into a children's gang, and then to help make that gang a template for success for all the others. He civilized them, and lived to grow older. Then he was discovered by the recruiters for the Battle School. For Earth was at war -- a terrible war with an inscrutable alien enemy. A war that humanity was near to losing. But the long distances of interstellar space has given hope to the defenders of Earth -- they had time to train military geniuses up from childhood, forging them into an irresistible force in the high-orbital facility called the Battle School. That story is told in two books, the beloved classic Ender's Game, and its parallel, Ender's Shadow.Bean was the smallest student at the Battle School, but he became Ender Wiggins' right hand. Since then he has grown to be a power on Earth. He served the Hegemon as strategist and general in the terrible wars that followed Ender's defeat of the alien empire attacking Earth. Now he and his wife Petra yearn for a safe place to build a family -- something he has never known -- but there is nowhere on Earth that does not harbor his enemies -- old enemies from the days in Ender's Jeesh, new enemies from the wars on Earth. To find security, Bean and Petra must once again follow in Ender's footsteps. They must leave Earth behind, in the control of the Hegemon, and look to the stars.

Jeesh fans unite under the Free People Of Earth.......2007-07-10
A fine close to the Ender Saga. There are a few intended loose ends but I really enjoyed going back and filling in the blanks of how the Hegemon united Humanity back on earth.
I will admit that I am a huge fan of Enders Game but did not like the immediate follow ups with the Pequinos etc and was pretty damned happy when Mr. Card went back to the battle schoolers and hard sci fi.
By the by I really like the Indian Battle schoolers speech to the Caliph on there being no real muslims so long as they advocate the murder of those who dare to leave the religion or those who refuse to join. It was very well put. It doesn't spell it out but it does remind one of how barbaric Catholicism was a mere 400 years ago and forces you to sadness in terms of the fact thatt some people never learn from their mistakes or those of others, especially when they think they are on the true path. It was such a nice real world political statement that for that alone I would have bought the book.
couldn't put it down!.......2007-06-07
I loved the Ender series so I hesitated to read the Shadow series for fear that it wouldn't live up to the original source. I was so wrong! The books have been among the better Card books that I have read. If you loved Ender, you'll adore Bean!
excellent work.......2007-06-01
After reading john grisham's latest book and getting disappointed, since this is the latest of all shadow series, I thought card might have not done a good job in writing Shadow of the Giant; but the author hasnt disappointed me. Although it has similar plot as the previous book, Shadow Puppets, after reading this, I started wondering when would the next volume come out.
Bean, growing too big for earth, left into space with his "deformed" children, knowing he won't ever be coming back. And Petra later remarried to Peter, the Hegemon of earth, and help peter unite the world.
Well thats just part of the story and theres more about battle school grads and Ender's jeesh and, of course, about Achilles who get shot in the head by "the Giant."
For all the reader's of the series and fans of Card, this book will make you love his work more than ever.
Orson's Best Yet!!.......2007-04-03
This was an excellent book, couldn't put it down. My only complaint is he left a couple of loose ends. I just hope that means new books.....
A fine yarn, all tied up.......2007-03-09
Scott, has done it again! Amazingly, he has told a taut, plausible tale with memorable characters in a universe he created 2 decades ago. He also tied up many plot lines, as well as leaving opportunities for continued dreaming of what happens next. Excellent and you will enjoy this conclusion to the Shadow series.
Book Description
From bookstores to stereo shops, independent retailers have been struggling to stay alive in the shadow of the superstore giants. In this new book from The Armarium Press, international speaker and sales trainer Eddy Kay shows small business owners how to turn the challenges presented by superstores into unprecedented opportunities for success.
Written for store owners and top managers, Thriving in the Shadow of Giants opens with a brief romp through retail history to remind readers that evolution is a fact of life in business. Kay then walks his readers through a refresher course in acting like a specialist - addressing topics from developing personal trade with customers to providing service that results in customer satisfaction.
Each chapter concludes with a Specialist Spotlight. These profiles feature successful specialists who have learned to turn the superstores' strengths to their own advantage and to exploit market niches the big guys are forced to ignore. Readers meet an appliance store owner who decided it was smart business to open up shop across from Wal-Mart
partners at a neighborhood bookshop whose customers come from around the world and through referrals by Borders up the street
and a model train store owner who explains how he and his colleagues forced the big-box retailers out of their industry completely.
Kay's lively writing style reflects his understanding that small business owners don't have the time to wade through statistical analyses of superstores' sales patterns - as other books might have them do - but neither are they going to be placated with quick-fix solutions for their woes. Retail is hard work, Kay reminds us, but his real-world examples and humorous anecdotes leave readers agreeing that running shop in the shadow of the giants can be fun and rewarding as well.
Book Description
Ten years ago, Up Against the Wal-Marts helped smaller businesses take on the corporate retailing empire. Now, with the giants bigger and more influential than ever, the underdogs have an even tougher struggle. The second edition of Up Against the Wal-Marts is here to help, with an updated focus on marketing and brand new ways to conquer (or at least co-exist with) the Goliaths of the shopping mall.
The authors have updated many of the businesses profiled in the original edition -- so readers can see how those companies have refined their operations to stay competitive -- and they detail the best practices of hundreds of successful small companies. The book also examines several fast-growth chains in a variety of markets. With advice for improving customer service and loyalty, maximizing the power of electronic marketing, hiring and keeping great employees, and more, Up Against the Wal-Marts is a formidable strategic tool any business can use to become (and remain) competitive.
Customer Reviews:
This book was probably helpful in 1994!.......2005-01-01
I can see that this book may have added value in 1994, but it is entirely out-dated at this point. The copywrite itself is from 1994, and the examples are dated back to that point. I am interested in seeing if the customer examples they list are actually still in business. Although I am sure they are, the techniques recommended in this book are only 1/2 the story for a modern day business. Perhaps the authors could update the book, with new statistics for the Wal-Mart's of the world, along with strategies to succeed on the Internet. It is a little strange to read a book that talks about how important it is to fax, and to trim phone bills by dialing after 11pm... as I said, this book is for the dinosaurs.
An MBA in a BOOK !!!!.......2004-01-15
I have no relationship with anyone connected with this book - it just sounds like I do. We stumbled across this book- and have now bought more than 12 copies for our key staff over three years. IT IS the BEST TRAINING BOOK for RETAIL MANAGERS I HAVE EVER SEEN. Whoops - sorry I get excited - but you get my point.
It is NOT about Wal-Mart - it is about being smart in operating your own business - and when you are smart - you have a much better chance of success.
Every chapter is solid with good info -- no fluff.

A Slingshot, But at Least it's Something.......2003-07-15
The Wal-Mart behemoth-beast's unchecked onslaught on our landscapes and local economies continues, but now there is more help to at least momentarily stymie the beast. With small victories here and there (the meatcutters' union win, for one, and that decision rendered right there in ARKANSAS, no less), this is one of the books that shows how we can be as good a friend to Wal-Mart as that it is to us, and we can learn from that very intelligent, mutating virus. This book helps a person think about retailing in the shadow of Wal-Mart the way an FBI profiler thinks about a criminal. It's not fighting fire with fire, but learning the weapons of the opponent and then thinking beyond them, to a more advanced level. It's an escalating fight. But it's a fight the little guy will win because Wal-Mart is now TOO big. The little guy is far more agile.
Learned about this book at sprawl-busters.com, a very helpful site (Al Norman's book is great as well!).

Remember the Spanish Armada.......2000-01-07
Don Taylor and Jeanne Smalling Archer explain how to prosper "in the shadow of the retail giants." This is quite literally a "how to" manual, filled with hundreds of specific examples, suggestions, strategies, and cautions which can be of substantial benefit to literally any small-to-midsize retail operation which is currently struggling to survive and then succeed. Of course, the David and Goliath metaphor is invoked. The co-authors stress the importance of courage, ten survival strategies, and "about 500 stones." (David needed only one well-placed stone. Today, he would need more "ammunition" because there are so many different "giants" to conquer. It is worth noting that David did not wrestle Goliath.) Interestingly, the "Big Three" (Wal-Mart, Kmart, and Target) all opened their first stores in 1962. They were not the first discounters but they had learned a great deal from pioneers such as Ann and Hope, Korvettes, Zayres, Arlands, and Gibson's. Once "Davids" themselves, they eventually became "Goliaths", demonstrating (in process) the importance of the ten strategies which are examined in Up Against the Wal-Marts.
The authors organize the material according to three overriding themes: change, improve, and succeed. In the 1990s, change has been the only constant. Improvement is not an option; it is an imperative. With regard to success, the co-authors leave their reader with this final statement: "Many small businesses are going to be successful competing with the giants, and we can't think of any reason why yours shouldn't be one of them."
Book Description
Who's cheating whom in college writing instruction? This book argues that through binary privileging of the "real" author (the inspired, autonomous genius) over the transgressive writer (the collaborator or the plagiarist), composition pedagogy deprives students of important opportunities to join in scholarly discourse and assume authorial roles. From Plato's paradoxical dependence on and rejection of Homer, to Jerome McGann's dismissal of copyright as the "hand of the dead," Standing in the Shadow of Giants surveys changes and conflicts in Western theories of authorship. From this survey emerges an account of how and why plagiarism became important to academic culture; how and why current pedagogical representations of plagiarism contradict contemporary theory of authorship; why the natural, necessary textual strategy of patchwriting is mis-classified as academic dishonesty; and how teachers might craft pedagogy that authorizes student writing instead of criminalizing it.
Book Description
The First General Of Israel In 2,000 Years, He Brought West Point To The Middle East In this dramatic account of a colorful life is the warm and energetic personality of a courageous man, loved by nearly all who knew him. American to the core, Mickey Marcus after serving his country with distinction in World War II responded to the appeal of a beleaguered democracy in the Middle East and became one of the truly great heroes of modern Israel, the only soldier interred at West Point who was killed fighting under a foreign flag. First published in 1962, Kirk Douglas starred as the legendary Mickey, whose gravestone bears the quiet legend: Colonel David Marcus - a Soldier for All Humanity. Critical Comment: At long last, the gallant story of Mickey Marcus. May it be a light and inspiration to us all. David Ben-Gurion Fascinating, unforgettable. Hal Lehrman, N.Y. Times Books A rattling good yarn, presented with skill in clear, free-wheeling style - N.Y. Herald-Tribune Heart-warming and often thrilling. St. Louis Post-Dispatch Magnificent biography. Marcus emerges as a marvelous human being, in addition to having been a great military hero, in this splendidly-compiled story. Detroit Jewish News A wonderful book and a very important contribution. Leon Uris A powerfully told testament to a man's integrity and a woman's faith. Mickey Marcus represented the finest synthesis of patriotic Americanism and a meaningful Zionism. Rabbi Balfour Brickner, Stephen Wise Synagogue, New York Ted Berkman is a remarkable reporter and a brilliant writer whose biography breathes with the life of Mickey Marcus from preface to epilogue. Intermountain Jewish News (Denver) Truly a most touching biography. I would have missed something fine in life had I not read this absorbing history. I was thrilled. Major Gen. R.N. Danforth (retired), former Superintendent, U.S. Military Academy Easily the best story in a long time. Fast moving action, vivid word pictures, reading one cannot lay down till the end. A magnificent book, to be read twice and shared with others. New England Farmer

Cast A Giant Shadow.......2007-06-28
A fast reading biography of a truly unusual and remarkable man. I recommend the book highly.
Every year, during May, The United States Military Academy (West Point) has a memorial service commemorating Col. David "Mickey" Marcus. If you are anywhere near West Point, you owe it to yourself to attend the service.
The story of a hero of freedom .......2007-05-13
I was surprised at how good this book is, and how much work must have gone into writing it. Berkman who for most of his professional life was a screenwriter did a tremendous amount of research to tell this story. As a screenwriter he increases its readability by casting a great deal of it in dialogue, though this raises questions about his 'fictionalizing' at certain points.
Nonetheless there is a strong sense of the overall reliability and authenticity of the narrative. The story is a fascinating one. Marcus was a true hero , a person of tremendous personal courage and ability. He was a fighter and a man of many accomplishments. Born to a poor Jewish family, and orphaned of his father in his early years he worked hard to win entry to West Point where he was intercollegiate welterweight boxing champion. He had a successful Army career including a stretch as head of phystical training for the Army's elite Ranger unit, and was mustered out only to become Corrections Comissioner of the City of New York. But when the Second World War began he returned to the Army .He did important administrative work but eager to contribute to the battle on the ground, parachuted into the Normandy battlefield where his sense of command and battlefield savvy were vital . For his actions he won the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. . At the end of the war he was with Patton's forces and was among those who visited liberated Dachau. The horrors of the concentration camp deeply effected him, and were part of his decision when later called upon by emissaries from Israel, to go and volunteer and help the Jews in their fight for a homeland.
Marcus made important contributions to the disorganized and beleaguered Jewish forces. He aided Ben- Gurion , and argued for the building of conventional forces and not simply guerilla units. He urged thus that the units of the Palmach lose their independent decision- making power and become part of the overall force of the Haganah. Marcus also made a great contribution to the Israeli forces in the battle for Jerusalem by pushing for the building of an alternative route, the Burma road to Jerusalem. It was while doing this that he was killed when a guard mistook him for an enemy soldier.
Marcus was a character of great energy, imagination, and flair. Berkman tells how he too was a person of great humanistic ideals, a fighter for freedom and human dignity.
One other central theme of the story is his relation to his wife Emma who suffered his long absences but remained the anchor of his existence. The book is filled with moving excerpts of his letters to her.
Berkman's tone in this work is upbeat and promotional. He tells the story in an exciting way. Here it is possible to wonder whether he might have done more in exposing the critical opposition to Marcus.
But the book is an overwhelmingly positive and convincing one. In the course of it not only is Marcus' story told, but we have the sense of a different time, a different world and different values. This is most apparent in Marcus description of and feeling about the Israelis he serves with. He finds them to be energetic, idealistic, youthful , innovative , and above all courageous.
Marcus himself came to beleaguered Yishuv, an underdog in its war against five Arab Armies, and made a major contribution to its victory.
EXCELLENT BIOGRAPHY.......2006-11-22
A well written story of one of the most unusual American war heroes as well as a stirring account of the birth of Israel.
MICKEY MARCUS WAS A MAN WHO LOVED FREEDOM.......2005-08-15
This book is a fantastic biography of an amazing man. He is a man who should be loved by those who love freedom, and hated by those who despise freedom. This book intimately details the sacrifices of this war hero in both WWII and the Israeli War of Independence. Ted Berkman does a superb job in documenting the feats of this man, enabling David Mickey Marcus to serve as a role model for future generations.
BEST HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY AVAILABLE!!!.......2001-05-29
An unusual, rather bold title; however, 'Mickey' Marcus was an unusual, incredibly bold man. The author keeps you turning each page with disbelief that this book is covering the shortened lifetime of ONE man! His list of accomplishments would look like a who's who list, only they were all accomplished by ONLY him. No matter how avid a reader, you will find yourself saying "How could one guy pull ALL this off and How come I've never heard of him before" I usually read a biography a day. This is by all means the most unforgettable and without a doubt my highest recommendation for anyone interested in the flame within man. And once you have heard of him (for this is not a book that you could put down without finishing) you will find there are thousands of web pages honoring multitudes of his individual achievements; but, this is THE book about ALL his achievements and his biographer is a GREAT writer allowing us an intimate look at an amazing person.
Book Description
For nearly fifteen years NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture has been a leading scholarly journal of baseball history. Covering the cultural and historical implications of America’s national pastime, NINE has explored baseball from the earliest matches and little-known players of the 1800s to the modern billion-dollar industry and its superstars of today. Here, gathered for the first time, are the best essays from NINE that center on the complex and multifaceted topic of African Americans in baseball.
This diverse collection offers an enlightening look at African American baseball in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Negro Leagues, and the turmoil surrounding the integration of baseball by Jackie Robinson and others. Influential figures such as the Negro League team owner Effa Manley, the writer Sol White, and the player Don Newcombe are explored, along with Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey. The book features an introduction by NINE founder and editor Bill Kirwin. Represented as well are other respected baseball historians, including the late Jerry Malloy, considered by many to be the leading scholar on nineteenth-century black baseball. Out of the Shadows addresses such themes as the importance of baseball to the African American community, the personal hardships faced by early integrators Robinson and Newcombe, the influence of female owners on the Negro Leagues, and the early days of barnstorming before integration, thereby providing a balanced and engaging overview of African American baseball history.

Growing up with Sandy.......2006-08-08
I knew Sandy when she lived across the street from my Grandma Stafford. I was raised by my mother's Mom and Dad and I spent a lot of time in the neighborhood. Sandy was a normal kid growing up and we spent time playing around the neighborhood and on more than one occasion I was invited in to her home for a cold drink on those hot summer days in Indiana. We went to the same schools and I watched her play basketball for a short time.
I lost track of Sandy when I was in high school but she was one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. I never realized she was growing taller than me while we grew up because I saw her every day and I was always very short until my last years in high school.
Read this book. Let Sandy tell you about her life and get to know her a little better. You'll be glad you did. I moved to Phoenix a long ago but I'm sitting in a hotel in Shelbyville as I write this. I've just said goodbye to my father and for the last few days I've been riding around town and visiting some of my childhood hangouts. I stopped by my Grandmother's yesterday and I made a point of pausing by the home where Sandy grew up.
It brought a smile to my face.
My Friend.......2006-03-22
Yes,I too have read this book. Yet there is so much more to SAndy we were room mates for a few years and i would not have traded them for anything in the world She has the kindest heart of any human on this planet, this is true. However she also carries with her sadness, frustration, and bitter feelings torward some individuals who have taken advantage of her on numerous occations....I won't name name's but one day i will.So you know who you are..........Bottom line is Sandy still needs help. If you know her ...call her write her..send money. be a REAL friend......she needs us all.
A Touching Book and Beautifully Written!!!!!!!!.......2002-04-02
I must confess that I had not heard about Sandy Allen before I read the book. I was truly overwhelmed by her - despite all the difficulties that she has faced in her life, Sandy remains a warm, sensitive and upbeat person. Whenever Sandy neglected to share some important facts with us in her own words, particularly because of her modesty, Jack Kleiman told us "the rest of the story." As far as I am concerned, Sandy should also be noted as the person with the biggest heart.
The simple life story of an amazing woman.......2002-01-31
I expected this book to be more sensational. I was pleasantly surprised that it is the simple, honest story of an amazing woman. The book filled me with admiration for this woman who has a very serious difficult physical condition. Admiration because she is loving, caring, and down-to-earth despite the amount and the kind of attention she has received throughout her life. Although, as she describes, much of the attention has been pleasant (e.g., her appearances on TV with Maury Povich and Sally Jessie Raphael), some of it has been very unpleasant. The writing is not stylish or polished at all. The explanation of her condition and the effects it has had on her life are told in a very personal way. But what really comes through very well is Sandy's personality. That's what makes this book worth reading.
