Book Description

In the realm of the Dark-Hunters there is a code of honor that even immortal bad boys must follow: Harm no human. Drink no blood. Never fall in love. But every now and again a Dark-Hunter thinks himself above the Code. That's when I'm summoned. Who am I? I'm the one thing the fearless fear. Step over the line and it's my wrath you will face. Nothing can touch me. Nothing can sway me. I am relentless and unfeeling. Or so I thought until I met a female Dark-Hunter who goes by the name of Danger-it's not just her name, it's how she lives her life. She doesn't trust me at all. And who could blame her? She alone knows that I'm here to be judge, jury and most likely executioner of her friends. Yet she is my key to saving some of them. Without her, they all will die. Dangereuse St. Richard is a deadly distraction. Something about her is reawakening a heart I thought was long dead. But in a race against evil, the only hope mankind has is that I do my duty. And how can I do my duty when it means that I will have to sacrifice the only woman I've ever loved?

Have you ever suffered from "Over-hyped Syndrome"? Although a foreign phrase, many of you have experienced it a time or two. Do you recall the last time you saw a really bad movie that just about everyone kept telling you was amazing? Yup, you were a victim of O.S. In this instance I am referring to Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Sins of the Night." On a scale of 1 to 100- with "Fantasy Lover (Dark-Hunter, Book 1)" being a 94 and anything by Catherine Coulter being in the single digits- SOTN was an 86. Still better than most authors but only slightly "worse" than "Seize the Night (A Dark-Hunter Novel, Book 7)."

What, you ask, was wrong? Honestly, I think our lovely Mrs. Kenyon is working too hard under the demand from her DH fans. This has resulted in a sloppy plot and slightly choppy writing. Specifically, she uses obscure reference to pop culture and such colloquialisms as "TMI." Who talks like that?! It didn't mesh with Danger. Do I need to even make reference to the heroine's name or the cheesy puns in the book? Then there were the few but distracting un-translated phrases in Spanish and French. This all served to basically alienate the reader from this world. It's ironic that I should be saying this as I speak and read enough Spanish and French to know what she's having her characters say. I also own all but one of Sherri's books and consider myself a diehard fan.

I think everything just went downhill when about halfway through I realized that I didn't much care about Alexion's story (he's not one of the "main" LA. characters like Kyrian or Zarek). I also figured out the plot after about, oh, page 40. Like the old adage about writing term papers, "Think of ten good ideas. Then throw them out. The eleventh is the only worthy one." Sherri picked something like her third idea. Some readers won't figure it out until it blatantly slaps them in the face. Those who are actually used to her writing style may groan when they get to the end.

Still a good read, but not necessarily a "must read" for her fans. You don't learn anything new. Not that I can see. Non-Kenyon buffs may like it MUCH more though.

I loved this book!
It explains so much that I didn't know before! I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it, but for anyone who's an Ash fan... READ IT!!

I discovered this series last year and read a lot of the books in succession. The main thing you notice as you go along is that all of the main plots in the books are annoyingly similar. Guys meets girl, she makes him feel things that no one has ever made him feel before, but he can't get involved with her because of yada yada yada.. still they wind up having sex where he often growls at the taste of her, etc, etc.

What keeps me hooked to this series are the side stories. Every book gives you a tiny bit more insight into who and what Acheron is and his relationship with Artemis is really complicated and interesting. Then, of course, there's Nick Gautier's story. The end of "Seize the Night" blew me away and I can't wait to see more of Nick.

In conclusion, these books are a great and fun read, but if you get bored with the formulaic main plot lines, hang in there for the kickass overall story.

Sherrilyn Kenyon keeps up her usual pace. She has anticipated the question been asked about Archeron and gives us the answers.

    London, 1817

Fiery swords of lightning clashed across the sable sky. Great rolling clouds flung down a warning spatter of rain. Thunder growled in the distance, but the only sound in the dark, empty street was the frantic percussion of the girl’s running footfalls.

Every step jarred her in her thin kid half boots. Her dingy skirts swirled about her legs, threatening to trip her. Fleeing the glow of lanterns on the broad avenue, she raced up a murky side street, her long hair tangled and wild. Her pale young face was stark with terror as she glanced over her shoulder and pounded on, her fists clenched, her breath raking harshly through her gritted teeth.

With a small gasp, half a sob, she pitched around the corner ahead into a coal-black alley and immediately pressed backward out of sight into the shadowed alcove of a doorway. There, she held perfectly still, but for the panicked heaving of her chest. Don’t move. Don’t even breathe.

They were only seconds behind her.

The riders came with the storm at their heels— relentless, inescapable as the approaching tempest. Another throaty snarl of thunder vibrated the windowpanes of the darkened building where she hid. She huddled down against the bricks, trying to make herself smaller, for when the low rumble faded, another sound still remained—softer, but more terrible by far.

    Clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop.

The relentless cadence of hoofbeats grew louder. Becky Ward shut her eyes with a grimace of fear, a bead of sweat rolling down her cheek. The narrow alley funneled the sound of their approach: the squeak of well-oiled leather, the jangle and hiss of deadly blades, guns, pikes, and pistols—weapons that did not even have a name in English.

Not that the riders had been sent to kill her. Oh, no, she thought bitterly. The prince wanted her brought back to him alive. If she had one advantage, that was it.

She yanked in the muddied hem of her skirt a split second before they came trolling past the mouth of the narrow alley. She stood trembling in the muggy heat of the summer night, holding her breath, agonized with waiting as they stopped mere yards from her hiding place.

They nearly had her, and, expert trackers, the Cossacks knew it. Prince Mikhail Kurkov had sent four of his best warriors after her, though many more were at his beck if these should fail. From where she stood, she could see the looming silhouettes of the second pair.

Huge, menacing men with thick beards and elabor- ate moustaches, the battle-hardened Cossack soldiers wore dark gray coats over baggy trousers, which they tucked into their black riding boots. Beneath the brims of their foreign-shaped helmets, their inscrutable faces were browned and leathery from life in the saddle, their slightly slanted eyes cool and efficient. It was said they were descended from the Huns.

One sniffed the air, trying to scent her out, while the others glanced around, murmuring questions and replies to each other in a low, rapid tongue that she could not decipher. She swallowed hard as they split up to continue searching for her in pairs. The first two continued onward while the second turned their swift, rugged horses around and headed back toward the wide, lamplit thoroughfare, whatever it was called. Oxford Street . . . Piccadilly? Becky wasn’t sure. When they had gone, she nigh collapsed with exhausted relief, leaning all her weight against the locked door behind her.

For a fleeting moment she allowed herself to shut her eyes.

    Another hairbreadth escape.

After four days of this, on the run, hunted from town to town as she had made her way southward to London, she did not know how much longer she could last. She had not eaten all day and had reached a foggy-headed state of fatigue. Fear seemed to be the only thing keeping her awake; but closing her eyes brought no respite, for it immedia

It seems that I start every review of a Tami Hoag novel the same way: I love Tami Hoag and would read just about anything by her. This was a pretty good story which was left open for a sequel which I am about to order. The story was good, the crime was good and I liked the characters. What I did not like was that the two main characters, Mitch and Megan were so eager to make love and fight with each other in no particular order. Some of the passion scenes were absolutely laughable. These two were so hot for each other it was silly right from the first meeting. Also, the clue that brought the whole thing together and put the game in motion was completely overlooked by the investigation team, although I figured it out by page 15. I also correctly guessed the bad guy (well, one of them anyway). I guess the other is ready for the sequel. Anyway, this book is 540 pages long. Skip the love scenes. They are silly. Also, I hope Mitch gets over his guilt and poor me complex. Maybe Megan can develop a relationship outside of her desire to carry a badge. Not a bad book. Not the best by Tami Hoag, but as I say in many reviews: An average book by Tami Hoag is generally an above average book.

5 out of 5 stars The Quiet before the storm?.......2007-07-03

I recently took a break from reading the awesome romance novels and jumped into Tami Hoag's novel "Night Sins". This is an awesome horror story about a small town and a little boy of 8 being kidnapped. Tami had a lot of twist and turns in her novel that kept you guessing about who did the kidnapping. It's also a great story about letting go of the past horrific events and being able to move on. Tami did a wonderful job in writing this great suspensful novel.

    Thanks Tami!

    4 out of 5 stars Solid Bones.......2007-03-12

Nights Sins is worth reading despite its flaws. These characters were well developed in typical Hoag style that hooks you and keeps you turning the pages. Some other reviews mention unresolved loose ends and I do agree on that issue but this book has solid bones which carries throughout the story.

3 out of 5 stars The author lets the reader down at the end!.......2006-10-18

Throughout the book Night Sins, Hoag manages to keep the reader guessing to a fairly decent degree. However, when all is said and done, or, in other words, the last chapter of the book, she lets the reader down with a resounding thud. There is no real resolution, only a phony, half-baked resolution that leaves you wondering why you bothered to read the book. If Hoag's other books are anything like this one, then I guess it is good that until now I had never read any of them. I doubt I will be reading any more.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Passionate Demure.......2007-08-16

I am so happy that I came across this delightful adventure on the bargain shelves at my local bricks & mortar bookstore! I had never even read "Romance" as a genre before!

Though I've always been a great fan of Jane Austen, it was indeed a lark that this momentous afternoon deigned fit all circumstances abiding good luck and agreeable happenstance when this novel's premise caught my eye... And one wouldn't even believe what's happened since!

Though this story takes place late in the era, I can reasonably assure all that I've Become A Robustly Ravenous Regency Romance Reader!!

Truly - I am changed (though I haven't determined whether it has been a change that's enhanced my intellectual character, or degenerated it) - Whatever the case, I am certainly more colorful...

Our heroine here, Miss Anne Marsh, is the daughter of a Dissenter Minister, previously engaged to a gentleman with whom she'd anticipated a quiet, comfortable future.... However, our hero Jack appears on the scene, and subsequently, without any design whatsoever, divines quite another future for her. He is the second son of a Duke, and being recently returned from danger and adventure overseas, brings with him all the repercussions, and indeed by happenstance and luck- essentially all the very things destined to disrupt and overturn all prospect of comfortable predictability- into Anne's life. Once back in England, he soon finds himself very quickly obliged to resort to the power of his family name in order to protect Anne's very life -- !

Along the way, they get to know each other even more -- and, again, luck and happenstance intervene, leaving the reader veritably breathless with delight!

All I can say is that Jack is everything one could want in a hero: strength, good looks, and a spirit of adventure -- Anne is eminently likeable: kind of heart and able to stand well on her own two feet!

This is the first in a Trilogy involving the young men in Jack's family. There's another involving his older brother, the Duke's heir, and one for his cousin, Guy, who figures fairly prominently in this story. And now, having read all three, I am more thankful than I can say for my little dalliance with a NIGHT OF SIN!

4 out of 5 stars an adventurer sleeps with a parson's daughter - is he a scoundrel or is he in love? Hmmm..........2006-02-26

I will admit that I am predisposed to dislike plots like this one, where an adventurous man (in the geographical and sexual sense) falls in love with a plain parson's daughter who doesn't know what sex is. I really resent the notion that after spending years sloughing off the conventions of his homeland, testing himself physically and mentally, and getting to know a lot of women who are openly and skillfully sexual, Jack finds himself losing his heart to an innocent girl who may be capable of making a similar journey, but who is - compared to Jack - a baby.

And Anne's ignorance is a little inconsistent - at one point she appears to be shocked that boys have different bodies than girls *down there* and at another she's making jokes about closing your eyes and thinking of England.

Plus, the whole family drama has it's odd moments. The Blackdowns are really great characters, every last one of them, but a big factor of the plot is Jack coming home after many years and his family is angry at him because he's compromised this girl and they've heard all sorts of rumors about his crazy foreign debauches. So there are long conversations where his mother and brother are questioning him about his sexual practices and I frankly just found that creepy. And then his brother walks in on him having sex with Anne and then they have to talk about it, and then the mother finds out and they have to talk about it too....At some point, the whole thing made me a little uncomfortable.

And then the end is rather wooden. This is the most shocking thing at all because Julia Ross is an incredibly evocative writer; she sets atmosphere like nobody else, and her dialogue is always original and uniquely styled. Yet the last twenty pages or so are really flat and rushed, with lots of declarative statements that push the plot along as quickly as possible.

OK, and now I feel bad about trashing this book because actually I adore Julia Ross and she writes beautifully and it was a great read. With all its flaws, it's still in a class of its own.

    5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2005-12-14

I absolutely adored this book. Lord Jonathan was the perfect hero - very gentle and kind, a nice change from the haughty, sneering heroes of a lot of these romances. His gentleness towards Anne made him all the hotter. The setting was exquisitely lush and the writing lyrical and beautiful. This one is a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Another Julia Ross Success.......2005-08-09

I would read a cocktail napkin limerick if it were written by Julia Ross, so it comes as no surprise that I enjoyed her latest book thoroughly. Night of Sin, with its intricate plotting and finely drawn characters, draws from various historical sources, including the story of Sir Richard Burton, who discovered the source of the Nile and wrote the first English translation of the Kama Sutra. By switching from the Georgian period of The Seduction, and The Wicked Lover, to the more socially (and sexually) restrictive Victorian Era, Ross brings a fresh approach to the familiar Puritan versus Rake story. Perhaps most refreshing about Ross's rendition of this familiar plot, is the way in which her characters behave not as cardboard cutouts from a set of Victorian paper dolls, but as individual personalities. This is especially true when it comes to the novel's treatment of Anne's "sprained ankle." Rather than rehash the angry-religious-father-demanding-that-his- daughter's-honor-be-avenged routine, or the angry-religious-father-shuns-his-slutty-daughter bit, Ross has Rev. Marsh react to his daughter's plight with kindness and love. While this would not work with every book, it was a nice break from the expected and did not detract from the historical accuracy of the story. Though I gave it only four stars, because I simply didn't love it as much as The Seduction or The Wicked Lover, Night of Sin is far better than 98% of the historical fiction being written today and deserves a closer look.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Voice In Historical Romance!!!.......2005-07-11

A fellow reader introduced me to Ms. Ross (thanks M!) and as a result I've found a new historical romance author that I positivly love.

Ann Marsh is a very sensible proper young lady. One rainy day her life changes the moment a seaman bumps into her. She is sleeping in her bed at her Aunt Sayle's house when she is awoken in the night by an intruder. Ann is unaware that she actually has two night visitors and one is the man that will save her and awaken her passion.

Jonathan Devoran St. George is the second son of a Duke and he is a world traveler. A theft of a precious fossil brings him to Ann Marsh. He realizes that Ann was slipped the precious item and that her life is now in danger. Her life is not the only thing in danger after he spends a few days with Ann. His heart's in danger. Will he be able to accept her love and passion or will his past keep him from being happy?

Ms. Ross has a beautiful way of writing. Her prose is very lyrical and adds to the telling of the story. She also pens very sensual reads. Not graphic reads but a story that will pull the reader in and not let go. Even after the last page is read the story will stay with you. I highly recommend Ms. Ross if you are a fan of well written historical romance with wonderfully drawn characters. I look forward to her next effort!

        Book Description

        Night Sins:
A young boy disappears. There are no witnesses, no clues - only a note, cleverly taunting, casually cruel. Has a cold-blooded kidnapper struck? Or is this a reawakening of a long-quiet serial killer?

A tough-minded investigator on her first make-or-break case . . . A local cop who fears that big city evils have come to stalk his small town home . . . Together they are hunting for a madman who knows no bounds, to protect a town that may never feel safe again.

        Guilty as Sin:
A respected member of the community stands accused of a chilling act of evil. But when a second boy disappears, a frightened public demands to know: Have the police caught the wrong man? Is the nightmare continuing . . . Or just beginning?

Prosecutor Ellen North believes she's building a case against a guilty man - and that he has an accomplice in the shadows. As she prepares for the trial of her career, Ellen suddenly finds herself swept into a cruel contest of twisted wits, a dark game of life and death . . . With an evil mind as guilty as sin.

          Book Description

Struggling with life's dark side? Longing for change?
Begin the journey toward a transformed life!

Many of us look at our lives and wish we could experience lasting life-change. We long to live in the light of our relationship with God, but find that we often reside in the troubling darkness of temptation. It's time to step onto the path that God has laid out for us, the only path that will lead us toward the life we long for. It's time to embark on a Long Night's Journey into Day.

Using three keys found in Scripture, you can embark on the journey that leads to personal transformation. Lay hold of the desire, knowledge, and power that make it possible to move away from sin and replace it with life-giving virtue.

As pastor and author James Emery White examines the eight basic sins from which all others grow, he also reveals the virtues that counter each sin. By recognizing sin for what it is and practicing the virtues that offset it, we can journey toward lasting life-change that draws from God’s incredible power.

Find out what can happen to a life lived in full partnership with the living God. Set out on the path of personal transformation, the life that becomes a Long Night's Journey into Day.
