Book Description
They were created to be killing machines. Highly intelligent, resourceful, and deceptively complex, the Jem'Hadar are a species engineered for war and programmed at the genetic level for one purpose: to fight until death as soldiers of the sprawling stellar empire known as the Dominion. No Jem'Hadar has ever lived thirty years, and not even their masters, the shape-shifting Founders, know what such a creature is capable of becoming were it to be freed of its servitude.
One Founder, however, has dared to wonder.
Appointed by Odo himself to learn peaceful coexistence aboard Deep Space 9 ™, Taran'atar, an Honored Elder among the Jem'Hadar, had for months been a staunch, if conflicted, ally to the crew of the station, ever struggling to understand the mission on which he was sent . . . until something went horrifically wrong.
Consumed by self-doubt and an ever-growing rage, Taran'atar has lashed out against those he was sworn to aid. While Captain Kira Nerys and Lieutenant Ro Laren both lie near death aboard DS9, their assailant has taken a hostage and fled into Cardassian space, pursued by Commander Elias Vaughn on the U.S.S. Defiant. But as the hunt unfolds, Taran'atar's true objective becomes increasingly less certain, as the rogue Jem'Hadar leads the Defiant to a discovery even more shocking than his crime.
Customer Reviews:
intriguing but confusing.......2007-09-24
I throughly enjoyed following the suspenseful story of Taran'atar. It was a great follow up to the last book of the series but left out anything about Odo and the ramifications of what happened with the great link. There was excellent character development, Sisko makes an appearance in this story but doesn't play a strong role.
There are so many questions waiting to be answered after this. The hierarchy on Deep Space Nine may be changed dramatically forever because of what happened. Also, after a point I thought that the relationship between Ro Lauren and Quark was pretty much over, but not after this. A major incident which happened fostered a strong bond between the two. The biggest question is what is Taran'atar doing and why? The confusing part was when the author inserted a story from a parallel universe or alternate reality which has Kira in it. Apparently, Kira is a renigade but also a war leader and one of the characters in the parallel universe made contact with Vaughn Elias. It appears as if the Deep Space Nine series will focus on the alternate universe story involving Kira for a while. I've seen the cover of the next book "Fearful Symmetry". It has a picture of Kira as a Cardassian on one side and her as a Bajoran on the other.
It dragged!.......2007-09-19
The end and other scenes were confusing. An interesting plot line, but the story was a little disappointing and unclear details dragged, there was also more graphic content than needed.
Certainly decent, but not much more. [some spoilers].......2007-04-24
I'm a huge fan of the DS9 relaunch, and I was eagerly anticipating this book as a continuation of the exciting storyline the various authors had established. However, after the great descriptions and plots of the previous books, especially the "Mission: Gamma" and "Worlds of DS9" series, I was very much disappointed by "Warpath". Like "Unity", the book does advance the plot, and provide some excellent action scenes, but not much else - it definitely does not share the depth and stand-alone nature of the other books. Furthermore, the author liberally reuses a number of plot ideas from previous Star Trek novels, such as the melodrama between Vaughn and Prynn, Ro and Quark. I also intensely disliked the ending, came totally out of nowhere, and didn't expand the DS9 universe at all, something the previous books were excellent at accomplishing. I hope the next installment follows the path established by the previous novels, instead of this new trend.
Good direction, but hurried.......2007-01-08
Mack definitely knows DS9 and the characters. The direction he took for new Jem'Hadar character is definitely refreshing. But, the story seems to have been written (or maybe edited) in a hurry to tie up loose ends, rather than tell a standalone story.
Melodrama to spare..........2006-12-23
I've read all but three of the DS9 novels so far (12 total, I think) and I can say that without a doubt, this is by far the WORST novel I've read in the entire series. For those who ever tried to defend Trek novels as actually having literary merit, David Mack decided to make a shallow mockery of us.
Do you remember in third grade how teachers tried to tell you that you should use as many adjectives as possible in your stories? This guy took that lesson way too far. Every word must have it's own melodramatic adjective. Unimaginative phrases like "a wind as cold as death" are littered all over this book. I found myself having to skip over entire paragraphs of melodramatic descriptions that weren't even relevent to the story. In one instance, he goes so far as to compare a Klingon ship to a Christmas tree... And I don't even want to begin to go into the horrors of his descriptions of the celestial temple. Where did this guy learn to write?
To his credit, he writes action scenes fairly well. It's only when he gets into one of his 'descriptive moods' that we find ourselves wondering if this guy just sits at his desk with a list of adjectives and then tries to throw them into his sentences after they've been written.
Read the book if you want to keep reading the DS9 series, but don't read for entertainment value. You will be sorely disappointed.

When You've Got a Problem and No One Else Can Help, Call on Super Gran!.......2006-06-10
Most people's grandmas are sweet and kind old ladies but defenceless and vulnerable. Not so Helen Mercier, a legend of the French Resistance in World War II. She knew where to place the knife in a German soldier rapist, after the war she became an excellent journalist, reporting from the world's trouble spots and gaining interviews with dictators and terrorist leaders that no one else could, she even partook in the ending of the lives of some people who deserved it. Now retired she has put the continent behind her and is content to live out her days in England. That is until her dim witted grandson is conned out of his expensive car and all his money then ends up in hospital after chasing the thief. Helen knows what she had to do. She will return to Europe for one last time, track down the con artist and bring justice to her grandson.
Hammond novels vary substantially in quality but this one doesn't disappoint. If you enjoy Hammond also check out British authors James Pattinson (that's Pattinson not Patterson) and Christopher Nicole who write in a similar style. Other high quality Hammond novels worth checking out are A Running Jump and The Snatch.

Superb.......2007-01-15
All the accolades are fully deserved - this is simply the best war history of any air unit fighting in any war for any side. Of course the author had some of the most incredible action aerial photography ever taken to base his work on, and the photos alone make the book worth its price. The cameras used to record the action in such detail with such high shutter speeds would not be out of place today, so it can only be imagined how cutting-edge they must have been over 60 years ago.
This work belongs on every aviation enthusiast's bookshelf. I'd add an extra star if I could!
One of the Best USAAF Unit Histories ever produced !.......2006-12-09
This is probably one of the finest USAAF unit histories ever produced, it chronicles the air operations of the 345th Bomb Group , the " AIR APACHES ", formed in 1942, and who served in the South West Pacific and Philippines up to 1945. Flying the superb B-25 Mitchell twin engine bomber, they fought through the New Guinea campaign, Dutch East Indies, Philippines, & to the end of the war, including raids thru the South China Sea, Chinese Coast & Japan.
................... 1996, 4th revised edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 8 1/2 x 11, glossy page stock, 448 pages, 634 B&W photos, 53 rare color photos, 48 magnificent color aircraft profiles, 5 combat action paintings and 13 highly detailed maps. numerous appendices, bibliog, index..
Strafers and Parafrags.......2000-06-07
This is the standard to which all military unit histories should conform. There is a wealth of information here - from training to combat deployment to VJ Day. The text covers the personalities, battles and tactics, and contains many personal accounts. The photos are superb and plentiful, and are complemented by color photos. Even better are the 55 color aircraft profiles, covering markings and camoflage from beginning to end. I wish that all of the unit histories that I own were produced to this standard.
Best war documentary I've read yet........1999-07-16
Having an Uncle that served with the 345th, I found the detail to be amazing. The accounts and memories of the people interviewed glues you to your seat and gives a fresh perspective of what it was like when war wasn't so cut and dry. Excellent pictures and text. My personal interest made it even more interesting. I found it to be very accurate and concise.
An exciting and important historical document........1998-10-11
Few books ever achieve the level of excellence that this volume has. The amount of time and effort that made this book happen is very obvious. From the first days of training in the United States through VJ day in 1945, this book reads almost like a day by day diary of the 345TH bomb group. Most of the photos are published here for the first time from private collections, and their overall quality is amazing. The interviews are written almost exactly as they were dictated; nothing is cencored or changed to be "politically correct". Some areas of the text are humerous to read, while others are sad and often very graphic in the details given. It shows a side of the war that is not often dealt with in great detail. I consider it a privilage to own this volume, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a true aviation history from crewmen who were there.

Book Description
When J.J. "Jocko" Clark graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy during World War I, he was primed to be a pioneer in one of the great transformations of the U.S. Navy-the change from a surface-only force to one in which aviation played a major role. Under the leadership of the key aviation admirals, William Moffett and Ernest J. King, Clark helped develop carrier doctrine and airplanes until the outbreak of World War II. As captain of the new aircraft carrier Yorktown, Clark provided aggressive leadership in the capture of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands. As a carrier task group commander he was instrumental in the brilliant victory at the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Okinawa campaign. After the war he fought to save naval aviation from the attacks of other services and went on to serve as Commander of the Seventh Fleet in the Korean War, where his innovative "Cherokee Strikes" played a crucial role.
Worshiped by his crewmen and despised by others for his "call-`em-as-I-see-'em" method of leadership, the flamboyant Jocko Clark was respected by all. Raised in Indian Territory (later Oklahoma), Clark became the highest-ranking naval officer of Native American descent in U.S. history. With access to family papers and as coauthor of Admiral Clark's 1967 autobiography, Clark Reynolds is well situated to bring the last of the colorful, old-school American naval leaders to life. A sixty-minute CD of interviews conducted by the author with Admiral Clark, Arleigh Burke, and other associates is included.
Customer Reviews:
Too much glory.......2007-02-21
Too much glory to the Admiral - seems he had everything figured out and the majority of those who did not agree with him were incompetent or just plain stupid. I did not care to hear of his drinking or womanizing exploits - not certain what those "abilities" have to do with being an admiral. A Navy Patton???
Feel the author spends too much verse in glamorizing Clark and down grading the other Naval heros of the era.
Excellent book on a great carrier commander.......2006-08-06
This is an excellent book about a great carrier commander. Jocko Clark was the initial commander of the new Yorktown, and a great task group commander as part of task force 58 under Marc Mitscher. In fact, he was Mitscher's leading commander, the one that Mitscher looked to for all the challenges. And, he delivered. This book provides how he did that - his personality traits, including his angry tirades, his physical challenges, including his continual bouts with an ulcer that required a special diet. However, he was a loyal commander and an individual who supported his men. Many a time, he wanted to look for downed flyers when the previous task force commander prior to Mitscher was nervous about lingering in an area too long and the threat of Japanese submarines. If you want a book that provides the panorama of the Pacific carrier war in detail - each minor and major action - Jocko was in the Gilberts, Marshalls, Marianas, through Halsey's typhoons - this is a great book for the WWII enthusiast in the pacific. Highly recommended.
Patton of the Pacific.......2005-10-13
The story goes that when the small carrier 'Liscome Bay' was sunk, her airborne planes had to have a place to set down or they would have to crash in the ocean. The man who gave the order on the carrier 'Yorktown' to turn on her landing lights after dark to give them a place to land was Jocko Clark.
That alone would justify reading more about him, but there is lots more. An indian, he went to the Naval Academy (Class of 1918) while the indian wars were a fresh memory. Early recognizing the value of aircraft, he became a pilot when planes were still wood and fabric. World War II came with the Japanese attack at Pearl. Getting rid of the battleships left the carriers and the aircraft admirals in position to win the war.
Younger than the famous admirals of World War II, he was commander of the Seventh Fleet operating off of Korea. He lived through the transition from wood and fabric through to the time of the jets. Not just lived, he commanded.

Book Description
In 1513, only a few years before Cortes conquered the Aztec empire, Juan Ponce de Leon and three shiploads of conquistadores landed just south of what is now St. Augustine, Florida. The Spanish adventurers, however, were quickly driven away by the Timucua people; further landings were similarly defeated by the powerful archery fire of the Calusa, who ultimately took the lives of Hernandez de Cordoba and Ponce de Leon himself. Clearly, the European experience in North America would be a far cry from their swift victories over the Aztecs and Incas. In Warpaths, Ian K. Steele provides a sweeping history of the numerous European invasions of North America, painting a dramatic new portrait of the centuries of warfare that shook the continent. Steele's fascinating account destroys the old image of technologically advanced Europeans overrunning primitive savages. Instead, he reveals how Amerindians rose to the challenge of each successive invasion with martial and diplomatic skill, from the defeat of Ponce de Leon in 1513 to a negotiated peace with the British in 1765. In war after war, the Amerindians and Europeans battled in a precarious balance, adapting each other's technology and tactics and seeking each other out as supply sources for food and weapons. Steele follows the experience of the Spanish at San Agustin, the English at Jamestown and Plymouth, the French at Quebec, and the Dutch at Albany, revealing the vast range of Amerindian strategies for coping with the invaders. For a century and a half, for example, Amerindians repelled the Spanish in Florida; the Powhatan fought the English at Jamestown for just as long. The Algonquin and Huron skillfully drew the French into their wars with the Mohawk, while the Wampanoag reach an accommodation with the Pilgrims that lasted for fifty years. Throughout the era, the Amerindians shrewdly played on European rivalries; indeed, they faced the greatest danger when the European courts declared peace between their colonies. The Five Nations, Creek, and Cherokee confederations in particular used the Europeans to extend their own power. Steele continues the story through the arrival of European regulars in 1755, showing how the Amerindians adapted to the resulting changes in warfare and the ultimate British victory over the French. In the end, the triumphant English were faced with a powerful Amerindian campaign against their outlying posts that forced them to accept a military stalemate on the frontier, leading to a negotiated balance of power in 1765. The conflicts that erupted with the European arrival have long been encrusted with myth and self-congratulatory folklore. Warpaths offers a startling new look at this pivotal era, combining social, cultural, and military history to provide a more nuanced portrait of the violence that gave birth to modern North America.
Customer Reviews:
A great overview of early colonial history.......2007-03-02
What's quite remarkable about this book is its coverage of the early history of European contacts with Native Americans. These quite a lot of material on the events of the 1700's in other books, but Steele has the best coverage of the 1500's and 1600's I've encountered. It reads well, and takes a sweeping view of events. The later chapters are quite good, too!
Interesting - if you can get through it........2005-02-05
Steele obviously knows his stuff and paints interesting pictures of the situations on the ground in North America. The tremendous problem with Warpaths is that it is nearly impossible to follow unless you already know a great deal about the topic. His writing is not only dense, with Steele introducing several new individuals and events on every page for the entire book, but also imprecise - you'll find yourself either reading and rereading the same paragraphs throughout the book in an effort to determine what he actually meant, or skimming over whole sections only to realize that you don't actually recall half of what he covered.
So in short, it's too short. If it had been 500 pages long (as opposed to about 250), with the extra 250 pages full of transitions, fluff, flavor, and general "writing stuff," it would be far more readable, but as it stands expect some very tough going.
A pathway upon the middle ground.......2000-08-13
Ian K. Steele's Warpaths is one of those all-too-rare books that manages to consistently forge a pathway across the middle ground. The author offers readers the "big picture" of European versus American Indian conflict at the continental level, yet at the same time focuses upon key events in convincing detail. He evenhandedly describes the motivations, standards, and aspirations of the Spanish, French, English, and Dutch who participated in the rivalry for North America, while doing justice to the Indian position as well. Steele manges to state his conclusions in a way that is clear to modern readers, but without distorting the perspective of members of seventh and eighteen century European and Indian societies. Though a book which at times requires some dedication to follow, Pathways is a book which anyone in pursuit of historical truth about North America will find rewarding.

Nice early-American reading.......2003-07-04
This is a novel with a rich setting. Owen Sutherland is a former member of the Highlander Black Watch who was unfairly court-martial 18 years prior to the events of the novel. One feels for him as he must struggle with being both British and Indian, and yet not of either. He seeks vengance for the death of a loved one, only to find a possible new love. This is not a PC book, which makes it all for the better.
