Book Description
In The Descent, New York Times bestselling author Jeff Long led readers into the darkest regions of suspense and adventure. Now he returns with an apocalyptic scenario that threatens to eradicate mankind.
In Jerusalem, an American archaeologist working on Project Year Zero -- the search for the historical Jesus -- crosses the line between science and theft when he helps plunder an old Roman landfill beneath the crucifixion grounds known as Golgotha. Nathan Lee Swift's crime will have devastating consequences. When an ancient relic is opened on the black market, a two-thousand-year-old plague is unleashed -- and the dying begins.
As the pestilence threatens to wipe out humanity, he finds a chance for redemption -- by finding the cure. Skirting the edges of civilization, Nathan Lee sets out to find his younger daughter and travels to Los Alamos, where a desperate tactic has been adopted: the use of human lab rats cloned from Project Year Zero remains. Now Nathan Lee will come face-to-face with one special cloned human who may hold the key to salvation -- in more ways than one. Patient Zero claims to remember who he is....
And his name is Jesus Christ.

In his sensational novel The Descent, Jeff Long created a world of stunning terror and adventure, "an imaginative tour de force" (Jon Krakauer). Now he imagines a scenario so vivid, so haunting, it anchors his place among storytelling masters. YEAR ZERO An archaeological manhunt is raging in the holy land -- a hunt for the historical Jesus. For Nathan Lee Swift, a young American field researcher and expectant father, the line between noble discovery and the plunder of ruins is sacred -- until the night he crosses it. At a Roman landfill beneath the crucifixion grounds known as Golgotha, Nathan Lee yields to his professor's greed and turns common grave robber. His world -- his unborn daughter -- seems lost to him. Hundreds of miles away, on the remote Greek island of Corfu, a wealthy collector pries open his latest black-market purchase -- a fourteen-inch holy relic containing a vial of blood dating back to the first century -- and unleashes a two-thousand-year-old plague. As the pandemic explodes from the Mediterranean basin and threatens to devour humankind, Nathan Lee gets a chance at redemption. He embarks on an Odyssean journey back to the United States to find his family. Skirting the edges of the world, Nathan Lee's path finally leads him to New Mexico, where the greatest minds of science have converged at Los Alamos to find a vaccine. There Nathan Lee meets Miranda Abbot, a nineteen-year-old prodigy. As the cure continues to elude them, Miranda launches a desperate final strategy: the use of human lab rats cloned from the year zero. Nathan Lee, the thief of bones, comes face-to-face with men made from the very relics he looted, one of whom claims to be Jesus Christ, but may also be Patient Zero.

A Bit About Jeff.......2007-09-03
I've had the priviledge of meeting Jeff several times. He's the kind of writer that takes you by surprise. Not only is he one of the greatest writers in the entire world (not just my opinion) but he's an "older brother" or, at least, I consider him an older brother type. My actual older brother used to read to my when I was younger and now Jeff "reads to me" by telling me wonderful stories about human beings and the glories and tragedies of being human. He's reserved, quiet kind of guy, very personable, intelligent and also a gentleman.
The first of Jeff's books that I read was "The RECKONING." Now, it's very hard for me to describe what it's like for me to read any of Jeff's novels (those of you who've read Jeff's books already know). From the first page I'm lured into the story as an interested viewer - an outsider. Before too long, I'm swept along as a PARTICIPANT, living and striving right along with the characters!
People who LOVE to read know this pleasure of being INSIDE the story, and the satisfaction and sadness that comes when reaching the last page and closing the book with a loving hand an a sigh. This is what is readily available within the pages of a JEFF LONG novel - from the heights of the Himalayas to the depths of the earth, the human spirit is a force to be RECKONED with.
Pick up one of Jeff's books. Treat yourself.
Blew me Away.......2007-08-19
My review title says it all. I just finished the book and leaped at the chance to do my review while it was in my mind. The story is about a plaque that covers the whole world. It's not just a end of world kind of stuff. It's more like a species die off. Think dinosaur. Scary stuff to realize that, I'm going to say, 99.9% gone. Honestly. With characters that are worthwhile to love and scorn, to fear and to fight for. Not just a great book. A great story. Read it. If you don't like it, please feel to flame me. I don't care. This one of the best I've read in a long time. The Descent
Hours I will never get back.......2007-08-03
This is the only book in the past twenty years that I have actually stopped reading before I finished it. The prose is amatuerish at best. Mr. Long desperately needs to take some creative writing classes at his local junior college.
Could have been much better.......2007-04-24
On the positive side, there are some very engaging plot lines and vivid scenes in this book. the overall premise is interesting, and the characters are well drawn. The beginning during the world-wide crisis is very well done. however, this book could have been so much better. the author leaves many unanswered questions, not just unanswered, but explicitly ignored. Its as if he started some interesting plot lines, then didn't know where to go with them. Overall, a good book (3 1/2 stars leaning towards 3), but its slow in the middle and i wasn;t completely satisfied with the ending.
One of my favorite books.......2007-04-22
I loved this book because it was horrifying, addressed the human element with good insight, and had moments of genius imagery.

Great Information Written In Easy-To-Understand Language.......2006-05-11
First of all, why wouldn't an author promote their other books?
Every author does this. I think the people complaining here are the same type of people that expect Tyler to do the "thinking" and "investing" for them while they sit around on the sofa complaining and watching bad TV.
I recommend this book to the moon.

If you work it will work.......2005-02-25
This book has very useful tips and hints. It is useful in conjunction with other study material. Yes, Mr. Hicks does endorse his own products - but wouldn't you? No one forces you to buy anything. It's not a map showing you how to, rather it is a guideline showing you what YOU can do. Don't buy it if you think that after reading it you'll be able to run out there and become a millionaire. Rather get it to supplement other real estate materials. If you are willing to work for what you want, then this book is great.
Estrogen issues.......2004-07-09
When I read the negative reviews by others, it reminded me of a women's joke that came over the email today..... it was a list of ways to tell if you are having estrogen problems. One of the tongue-in-cheek answers was "when every one around you is having an attitude problem". I think the negative reviewers are greatly exagerating. I enjoyed the book because of the author's positive, encouraging, attitude and perspective, having been involved in the business of loaning money for years. I think his writing reflects optimism that beginners can appreciate. There are numerous helpful ideas, checklists, and formulas. His emphasis on pre-purchase analysis to assure positive cash flow was good, and reminded me of the principle that Robert Kiyosaki teaches about having an asset buy another asset. (Rich Dad's Guide to Investing). I also liked his comments about credit cards. I didn't mind the letters of successes from his previous readers. They added to my own encouragement and determination to press on to garner some financial victories for myself. Rather than a "re-hashing" of his old materials, I would say it's a collection of his most poignant and pertinent tips in one place. I think there's more than $11 worth of information here... definitely worth the price.
My friend...my #$#$!.......2004-04-13
I went out and bought this book after a minute or two "scan" in a bookstore (Yes, I paid retail & tax!...What was I thinking?) A couple of things caught my eye and I left it at that. After about ten pages of the author calling me his "friend"...I realized that I was STUCK with a thick drink coaster. It really is a big commercial for his other writings. It's loaded with testimonials as filler and no true substance...which is what I look for. I missed the boat here! After the first 100 pages, I'm still waiting for some (whatever that is) useful details. Do I take a gamble and finish this thing?
Why I picture a car salesman.......2004-03-15
Unless you want to read an infomercial on the author's other books and products, do not waste your money on this book. The content is non-substantive and goes into very little detail on "how to build zero cash into 7 figures." Hicks gives anecdotal examples of how people who read his books had huge success in real estate throughout the book. I got very tired of the condescending tone of the book and every section seems to start with "If you follow my process, my good friend, Ty Hicks will make you a success." I would've never thought this, but, my good friend, I couldn't wait to go back to reading Kiyosaki's Rich Dad series.

Book Description
He was known as the King of the Arctic, and "Fifty Years below Zero" was his best-selling autobiographical account. Charlie Bower was only nineteen when he arrived in Point Barrow, Alaska in 1883. He had left San Francisco with the intention of making a short dash north on a whaling ship bound for the mythic Arctic Circle.
Yet adventure had a way of following Charlie Bower. That initial landing turned into a fifty-year-long ice-bound lifestyle. Once he stepped off the whaler and back onto dry, albeit frozen land, Bower took a job as master of the whaling station. But, though commerce brought him north, it was the people that helped keep him there for Charlie soon became fast friends with the native Inuit people. They taught him how to hunt seals on the ice, caribou on the tundra, and whales out on the sea. He learned their secrets, lived in their igloos, navigated in their kayaks and avoided being murdered in their feuds. Plus the young adventurer observed the great dramas of the Far North play out. He saw the last of the sailing ships disappear over the horizon, and watched the first airplane fly in.
For fifty-seven years, through ice storms and northern lights, Charlie Bower maintained both this lonely outpost and his claim as "Uncle Sam's most northerly citizen". A book to remember, "Fifty Years below Zero" is illustrated with photos by the author.

Amazing Tale - Fascinating Character.......2005-04-09
Charlie Brower is one of the unique and historical "characters" of the Far North. I'll admit he is a distant relative and he was one of the family legends that I thought a tall tale until I read the book. I am amazed that folks got around so much in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Not only around the world, but across the Arctic tundra on days journeys via dog sled, cheating death at many a turn. The basic story of a WASP man learning local Inupiaq traditions is facinating, along with the accounts of an assortment of folks who tripped by Barrow, AK, the most northern point in the US. The evolution of Barrow and how Alaska changed in the 20th Century is interesting; native traditions are not perfect either. This book should be read with the more recent "Sadie Brower Neakok : An Inupiaq Woman" by Margaret B. Blackman. Sadie is one of his many children, and her account is a companion to "50 Years." She was born at the end of his book and then carries on from her mixed heritage in the continuum of Alaska history. Though not as great a tale, it is useful to see how the story continued.
fascinating account.......1999-06-16
Charles Brower lived in Northern Alaska for over 50 years. This is an extremely interesting account of a remarkable life.

The first great expose.......2005-11-28
This writer was the first really able literary whistleblower to take after the Pol Pot government. What was going on was widely suspected. In a little remembered outcry, Senator George McGovern (remember him?) publicly called for international intervention in 1978 to save Cambodia from barbarism. But most on the left were ambiguous (the stories beggar belief...give the revolutionaries time...they will grow out of their wildness). Cambodia was invisible in the world consciousness at the time - the west wanted nothing but peace and quiet after the Vietnam tumult. Then came Monsiieur Ponchard's book.
In the decades of films and commentary since, this book holds up extremely well. Considering the deadly walls of silence thrown up by the Khmer Rouge regime after 1975 (they even banned telephones as part of their total Maoist re-fit) the author penetrated with considerable accuracy and sure footedness into the operation of this most murderous regime. The factual accuracy with which the power structure is described is surprising. He gets the personnel right, the utopianism of the leading players, and their influences - Maoist in economics, Stalinist in rejecting any possibility of "re-education" in creating the new society. The author's clinical style of writing takes us through the establishment of the terror state, and disentangles the knottiest part of the story - how did the Khmer Rouge make their pitch so successfully to the peasantry even granted the US bombing from 1969? THere were other players and resistance groups. The author excells at showing the KR's usurpation of Sihanouk's authority following his overthrow by Lon Nol, and how his call for the "brothers and sisters" to go into the forest and resist lead the peasantry straight into the arms of Pol Pot, until then a deadly but marginal figure. The author's chilling treatise on how a peasantry who believed in forest spirits were sold on a crusade to re-start history and re-capture their long lost Angkorean glory is one of the most important stories of history. This is a superb telling and a powerful warning.
Dated.......2005-06-24
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure at the time of the book's publication during the 1970's this was an invaluable text when little was known of the genocide in Cambodia. The author, Francois Ponchaud offers a detailed account of the Khmer Rouge takeover and subsequent political experiment that included horrific violence and totalitarian levels of state control. Ponchaud's book is mostly comprised of Cambodian refugee accounts recorded in Thailand once they escaped from the Khemer Rouge's brutal grasp. The accounts are extremely detailed and tragic, and I'm sure they were extremely informative at the time. However, Ponchaud's scholarship is not beyond reproach. For instance, he frequently tosses around numbers of refugees and Khemer militants, and there's little that can be verified from the refugee accounts, many of which are recorded second-hand. I'm afraid the vast majority of the sources that Ponchaud cites are just references to Cambodian radio broadcasts that cannot today be confirmed. Additionally, the entire last section of the book is given over to the background history of Pol Pot and his legions, tracing the origins of socialist thought in them, and bogusly arguing that the Khemer Rouge's ideology was the logical conclusion of all socialist thought. Unfortunately, there is barely a single source cited in this entire section! It really cannot be relied on. I'm not saying that the contents of this book aren't correct or that they're not worth reading, I'm just saying there is very little that can be verified. Still I'm sure the book was quite an eye-opener at the time, but you should really check out the more serious scholarship on this subject that was printed after the atrocities for they are far more professional and are backed up with a wealth of resources. I recommend to all readers interested in the topic to read the articles produced by Yale University's Cambodian Genocide Program, a thorough study of the history and results of the Khemer Rouge's disastrous and barbaric reign.
devestating.......2003-09-12
I first read Ponchaud's work some 25 yrs. ago. I was shocked, devastated, angry and stunned. As a university student I naively thought that this sort of thing ended during the Second War. Sadly, the years have taught me that this is not the case. I think in our current state of affairs that this study should be re-read before we (the USA) set up other nations for failure as we did in Cambodia and seem intent on doing in Afghanistan and Iraq. "Those who forget the past are condemed to repeat its mistakes." Let us not forget. Ponchaud's work must be kept alive.

Professionally & Personally Inspiring.......2006-04-01
I've found myself citing the messages of Zero to Sixty in Nine Years to friends and business colleagues alike. The messages of this book transcend that ever elusive "Work-Life balance", applying effectively at the office and at home. The topics of living life with purpose, balancing "living in the moment" vs. "living for tomorrow", and creating or reacting to change are reinforced on both ends of the commute.
Book Description
Fifty Years Below Zero is an engrossing account by Charles Brower, the "King of the Arctic," of his life in the north. Brower shares his knowledge of whaling, pioneering, and Alaska Native life and customs before statehood, chronicling a period of important and rapid change in Alaska history with insight and humor. His story is also full of high adventure and rich with details about the many visitors who became his friends--explorers, whalers, traders, and missionaries. This volume is an excellent companion to the oral biography of Harry Brower, Jr., the son of Charles Brower, entitled The Whales, They Give Themselves (University of Alaska Press 2004).

New cover on an old book.......2000-11-19
For anyone who enjoys late 19th/ early 20th century american history this is a must. Charles Brower, like other early european settlers of the American west was able to see a culture before its early traditions, customs, and language were lost. He was able to write about his experience in a way that many can relate to. An incredible tale of life at the top of the world.
Amazing!!.......1999-10-02
This autobiography is full of the most amazing stories from the first western person to permantely live with the Inupiat Eskimos of Alaskas North Slope. A worth while read for some great real life adventure.
