Something very strange has turned up in Tom Lasker's wheat field: a ten-thousand-year-old sailboat made of an unknown substance. And then there's the Roundhouse, apparently a doorway to another world, sitting squarely on Sioux reservation land. How did they get there, and what do they signify for the people embroiled in their discovery? This is sci-fi on a grand scale by the author of The Engines of God.

Book Description

It turned up in a North Dakota wheat field: a triangle, like a shark's fin, sticking up from the black loam. Tom Lasker did what any farmer would have done. He dug it up. And discovered a boat, made of a fiberglass-like material with an utterly impossible atomic number. What it was doing buried under a dozen feet of prairie soil two thousand miles from any ocean, no one knew. True, Tom Lasker's wheat field had once been on the shoreline of a great inland sea, but that was a long time ago -- ten thousand years ago.

A return to science fiction on a grand scale, reminiscent of the best of Heinlein, Simak, and Clarke, Ancient Shores is the most ambitious and exciting SF triumph of the decade, a bold speculative adventure that does not shrink from the big questions -- and the big answers.

A couple of scientist types find something that should just not be there. In a ten thousand year old excavation they find a reasonably modern boat.

How the hell did it get there, is the question. It leads to an even greater discovery, that of an alien structure that allows teleportation to far distant places.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyed Reading It. Not McDevitt's Best!!.......2007-09-01

I enjoyed reading this novel, but it's not McDevitt's best work. I really enjoy his novels. In this case, I liked the first two-thirds of the novel, but the ending was somewhat uneven and quite contrived...to be more specific, the ending actually made me wince!! I would have liked the novel to have spent more time on the alien civilizations and not as much on the rather implausible response of the U.S. Government to the alien technology. I didn't quite buy the internal logic behind the government's slow response and seeming lack of interest in the technology.

4 out of 5 stars Happy to have accidentally found a great author!.......2007-08-22

I was bored, had nothing to read, and so grabbed the first unfamiliar book on the shelf (my husband and I had been married for 3 years, we hadn't nearly had time to read all of each others' books). Lucky me! It was Ancient Shores by Jack McDevitt!

This was a fantastic read that had me yearning for more. The ending wasn't satisfactory for me... I'm one of those people who always wants to know "Okay, and what happened NEXT?" The pace of action was great, not too quick (leaving you scratching your head and going "huh?"), not too slow (having you fall asleep between good bits) and the characters were completely believable. One of the main characters, Max Collingwood, turns out to be a self-preservationist coward, but maintains most of his dignity all the same. Tom Lasker seems to disappear in the second half of the story, it's too bad McDevitt didn't keep him (and his family) around.

The descriptions of the new worlds are fantastic, but I really would have liked a more thorough explanation of the Roundhouse and how it came to be. Suggesting that an ancient alien civilization used the area as a vacation spot some 10,000 years ago "but we're not sure" is a little unsatisfying. But it's definitely worth reading, and I'll be looking for more by Mr. McDevitt!

3 out of 5 stars Far from his best.......2007-08-06

This is an early McDevitt work, and it shows. It takes too long to determine who the main characters are and who's just a spear-carrying extra, the dialogue is a little stilted and artificial, and the ending is simple deus ex machina, and an an unconvincing one even for a DEM. Reading it wasn't a waste of time, but I'm sure glad it wasn't the first book of his I'd ever read. If it had been, I might never have picked up another.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sci fi........2007-05-20

McDevitt can really write a good sci fi novel. He reminds me of Lovecraft, because he deals with people delving into the mysteries of the universe. This book is really fun if you are into archeology, lost civilizations, etc.

Book Description

Although the exact dates of construction of the so-called Saxon Shore forts are uncertain, the development of the frontier system that ran form the Wash to the Solent on the south-east coast of Roman Britain was spread over at least a century and a half. Many of the new forts were notable for the superior strength of their defences, with thicker stone walls bristling with projecting curved bastions. These and other features were clearly designed to them more difficult to storm than old-style frontier forts with their classic playing-card shape and internal towers. Defense earlier in the Roman era had meant aggressive response in the open field or even offensive pre-emptive strikes into enemy territory. The new trend was to build stronger, the emphasis being on solid, more static defense, anticipating attack and absorbing it rather than going out to meet it. Most of the major harbours and estuaries of the east and south-east coasts of Britain were fortified in this manner. There was a similar series of military installations across the Channel in Gaul, extending along the northern coast as far as what is now Brittany.

Whatever their precise tactical and strategic function, a continuing debate to which this book contributes, the construction of these stone forts represented a huge outlay of money, and commitment of manpower and materials. The Saxon Shore Forts are among the most impressive surviving monuments of Roman Britain. This book addresses a number ofthe fascinating questions they provoke - Who built these Forts? When and for what purposes? How were they built? How did they operate? Who garrisoned them, and for how long?

5 out of 5 stars Saxon Shore.......2007-06-28

The typical Osprey title, concise, well-written, well-researched, and interesting. It is supplemented by excellent full-color plates depicting the fortifications themselves, and their soldiers in combat or on civilian duty.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent short book on the Saxon Shore.......2007-05-13

This is a very well written, scholarly (although short) book on the Saxon Shore forts of Roman Britain that fills a gap in the literature nicely. It is beautifully printed, has many useful maps, illustrations and photos, and has a nice bibliography. Some of the books in this series are rather lightweight; I am happy to report that this one is much better than average for the Osprey series.

5 out of 5 stars A technical survey of the design, history and technology.......2007-04-10

Nic Fields' ROME'S SAXON SHORE: COASTAL DEFENCES OF ROMAN BRITAIN AD 250-500 provides a technical survey of the design, history and technology of key fortresses and defensive systems of early Roman Britain, making it a pick for military collections and libraries strong in early history. The 'Saxon Shore' forts of Britain are among the most impressive monuments of the Roman occupation of the British Isles: their ruins are part of today's British landscape and their history is surveyed here with maps, photos and black and white and color illustration throughout.

5 out of 5 stars The Saxon shore, what's that?.......2007-01-04

Osprey keeps pumping out titles for history lovers everywhere. This is a concise, and easy to follow narrative of the defenses of Eastern Britian through the Arthurian period. Great illustrations as per usual, and brief time line make it quick study for Roman history buffs.

    Book Description

The history of the area now known as Iran, but often still referred to as Persia, spans millennia, boasting a rich and complex artistic and cultural legacy. Populated since prehistoric times, thus making it one of the most dynamic areas of Islamic civilization, this region was home to the world's first powerful empire (lead by Cyrus the Great during the Achaemenid dynasty) and has influenced the aesthetic grammar of a large portion of central Asia, including Armenia, Georgia, and India.

From the ancient Iranian civilizations in 500 BC, through the Islamic period, and on to modern-day Iran, Iran: The Art and Architecture of Persia explores the common characteristics and thematic threads running through Persian art. Iran presents its readers with archaeological landscapes, monuments, sculptures, carpets, and dazzling ornaments and art objects from this stunning artistic milieu. The text takes as it subject the most fascinating and unusual facets of the Persian artistic experience, with a particular focus on post-Hellenic culture, namely late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Iran investigates how the examined regions were hothouses of specific artistic developments and identifies how the Iranian passage along the Silk Route acted as a bridge between distant lands for trade as well as the dissemination of religious and material culture.

The two authors, Gianroberto Scarcia and Giovanni Curatola, write in an engaging, refreshingly accessible manner, catering to both the specialist and the novice wishing to immerse themselves in this captivating region and its art. Author Scarcia writes the first part of the book, covering the era from the Achaemenids to the Sassanids, examining the great architecture from Persepolis onward, while also addressing the powerful metalwork produced by these cultures. The second part, by Curatola, explores the Islamic period, when architectural decoration moved into the forefront with brilliant chromatic effects etched onto massive built works. The same colors bloom throughout the other arts, including carpets and miniature paintings. Dynamic and absorbing, Iran and its over 200 color photos will take readers on a virtual tour of this region and the art it has produced over the centuries.

Western thought, writes Clarence Glacken in this magisterial, highly influential study, centers on three questions: Was the earth made for a reason? Does the earth shape human life? How have humans affected the earth? Tracing these three questions in turn deep into antiquity, Glacken shows how varied the answers have been. Aristotle, for instance, argued that there was purpose in nature, with each thing created for the benefit of something else--especially humans. Christian thinkers extended Aristotle's ideas, although, as Glacken warns, it is incorrect to assume that this presupposes a hostility toward or indifference to the natural world. Glacken closes his tome with the advent of modern science, when theological questions gave way in large measure to more modest, empirical questions of form and process. --Gregory McNamee

4 out of 5 stars Treasured Reference Work.......2001-06-28

Unfortunately, this is a book that many geographers may own, but few take the time to read. It is cited often, but I feel not understood very well. This is a work that all scholars will enjoy reading and will be a valuable reference work for decades to come.

I took a challenge from a professor to read the work one Christmas break. I was severely impressed with the book after reading it. But craming the reading into such a short period of time was difficult, and I do not feel those long sessions of reading were the best way to get the most from the work. But I enjoy using the index to look up topics of interest. And I feel that I need to look again at the introductory essay.

Glacken has three ideas that he draws out of his look at the history of Western thought: the idea of a designed earth; the idea of environmental influences on culture; and the idea of humans as a geographic agent. It is a must have for all geographers.

    4 out of 5 stars Infinite context.......2000-03-28

More than thirty years ago a book was published with an ambitious goal: to explore `nature and culture in western thought from ancient times to the end of the eighteenth century.' Glacken traced this thought through time as three major ideas ebbed and flowed in social consciousness: that of the Earth designed for man, the influence of the environment on man, and man's influence on the environment. Glacken's book was praised as a monument and a scholarly accomplishment. Despite the passage of time, today's students of geography are still reading Glacken's tome; it hasn't been superseded. As Glacken was writing Traces, a book published in 1962 was challenging assumptions, not only in academia but on the popular scene as well. Rachel Carson's Silent Spring described the hidden dangers of pesticides, amplified by the interconnections in nature. Less then forty years later, such far-reaching impacts are relatively assumed; today, popular writers are trying to convince the world of environmental problems of a global nature. Despite major changes in the environment and our understanding of our place in it, Glacken's book is as important and unique now as it was in the 1960s. The relatively recent discoveries of global scale changes like ozone depletion and climate change have helped to underscore the third of Glacken's three themes, that of man's influence on the environment. Although these man-made, global threats could be seen as unprecedented, academics studying them would find insights and foreshadows in the historical context offered by Glacken in Traces. In early Greek writings Glacken finds conceptions of man apart from (and superior to) nature. Although a humble alternative can be found in the writing of Seneca, the prevailing notion of the time was enthusiasm for man's growing control over nature seen in advances in navigation, agriculture, domestication, and architecture. The Hellenistic period involved a continual growing awareness of man's influence on the environment, but few accompanying interpretations. Two exceptions are notable. First, the geographer Erastothenes recognized the complex factors behind environmental change by observing the island of Cyprus and the interactions of mining, navigation, and governmental land policy. Secondly, Theophrastus observed that colder temperatures followed the draining of a marsh. This was (perhaps) the beginning of a long history of speculation about man's ability to change the climate. The contemporary observer of man's impact on the environment will appreciate the significance of the dominant early ideas because, as Glacken's attention moves to the Christian Middle Ages, they change in degree but not in substance. The medieval times exhibit a continued, though perhaps rising, eagerness to control nature as the actions of land conversion, expansion, and colonization are regarded as Christian duties. Contrary to popular belief, the `Dark Ages' were a time of invention, and newly created tools increased the pace of environmental change. Parallel to this, occurred conflicts over land use. They weren't, however, what we would call environmental, but concerned rights and the productive use of the land. In Early Modern Times, Glacken notes further increases in forest clearance and land reclamation resulting from metallurgy and other innovations. One of the outcomes was the observation that men make undesirable (and unplanned) changes in nature. For example, Evelyn wrote on air pollution in London (1661) and the French passed the Forest Ordinance of 1669 fearing that France might die for lack of wood. Such events symbolize the awareness of a broader relationship between men organized in societies and their physical environment. This is also apparent in the study of disturbed environments and the synthesis of traditional fields of study into what became the roots of modern ecology, forestry, and so on. Despite these progressions, early modern times were still a period of great optimism about the possibilities and achievements of man's progress. In the 18th century, the subject of climate change appears again. Milder winters and cooler summers suggested large scale climate change to some. Williamson rejected the idea that this was large scale, and suggested modifying the land to induce desirable local climates. Further modifications were suggested in the time of the `New World.' As this land was being settled, man's influence on the environment was more obvious since the land was relatively virgin. Although Fabre (in the late 18th century) suggested that environmental change can be irreversible, this was still a time of optimism about man's effects on the environment. Writings such as Fabre's were generally too diffuse for the inherent philosophical importance to be explicit. Not until later in the 19th century, Glacken notes, does pessimism seriously challenge optimism and local observations move towards theoretical generalizations. Despite the fact that Glacken inevitably excludes some significant people and events, it is difficult to offer a serious criticism of Traces in light of the historical context that his book provides the contemporary geographer. As global-scale, man-made environmental changes begin to emerge, and as geographers attempt to advance human-environment theory in the presence of these changes, an understanding of the history of man's influence on the environment (and the associated philosophy) is invaluable.

      Book Description

Book I in The Story of the World series, by M. B. Synge, "On the Shores of the Great Sea" focuses on the civilizations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea from the time of Abraham to the birth of Christ. Brief histories of the Ancient Israelites, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Scythians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans are given, concluding with the conquest of the entire Mediterranean area by Rome. Important myths and legends that preceded recorded history are also related. Suitable for children ages 9 and up to read to themselves and for children as young as 6 as a read-aloud. The Story of the World series, by M. B. Synge, comprises a set of five volumes, written at a middle school reading level, that cover all major events in the history of Western Civilization, from earliest recorded history to the close of the nineteenth century. With fifty or so short chapters in each volume, the series links the great eras in time and place together by a chain of stories of individuals who played principal parts in the events related. While statesmen and military commanders figure heavily in the narrative, stories of explorers, scientists, artists, authors, and religious figures are also presented. The author writes in an engaging fashion, using dialog frequently to bring scenes to life. She juxtaposes events happening at the same time in different parts of the world in a style reminiscent of the books of Genevieve Foster. This series is an excellent introduction to world history for adult readers as well as for children.

          Book Description

AN INSPIRATIONAL MEDITATION ON THE POWER OF CONSCIENCE—HOW A SIMPLE ACT, A MOMENT OF PURPOSE, CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE, YOUR COMMUNITY, EVEN THE WORLD

We all struggle at times to know what to do to seek and abide our conscience—when right and wrong are not black and white, when heart and head speak with different voices, when our intentions and interests are not aligned. If you believe that the outcome of these struggles affects the course of your life, and the lives around you, then this book is for you.
If you believe that there are times and places when the choice an individual makes to speak or be silent, to eat or fast, to remain seated or to stand up in a crowd, to stare and remember or to walk on by and forget, can be as powerful as a president’s command, a congressional appropriation, or a military incursion, then this book is for you.

This book is for you if your profession is rewarding financially but not spiritually, or if you’re ever worried that your career and conscience conflict.

This book is for you if you are a parent whose love of your children never wavers with the anxiety they cause you but sometimes leaves you wondering whether they will grow up to do the right thing even if no one is watching.

This book is for you if you question whether the countless small decisions you make each day add up to a larger judgment about your life’s meaning.

Finally, this book is for you if you believe that quiet, often solitary acts of conscience have echoes louder than the original sound; that individual acts have the potential to trigger large public consequences and continue to inspire others from generation to generation; that such acts bring rewards to the individual, that unforeseen benefits accrue, that one gains more than was sacrificed, and that there is a transformative power and richness to a life so lived.

This epic book is a beacon for the simple yet profound acts of generosity and courage no matter how large or small, and how they can change the course of humanity forever.
One of my favorite examples was the brave woman Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat during the segregated times of the 1960's, and how that one act was the catalyst for equality for people of all color and creed in the USA.
One donation can help someone become a doctor who winds up saving YOUR life. `The Light of Conscious' should be required reading in all schools, in all lands, to teach by the examples Bill Shore provided how one simple act CAN make a difference for our entire world. An absolute MUST Read. Profound!

5 out of 5 stars Living (even for a moment) What You Believe.......2004-03-13

Bill Shore uses stories from his life, as well as from the famous and not so famous, as a backdrop to his message. A childless cleaning woman from Mississippi works her entire life and saves $150k which she donates to the University of Southern Mississippi so someone like her has the chance to go to college. This huge act on her part inspires those who have significantly more to act. The simple actions of Rosa Parks in refusing to move from her seat on the bus and Pee Wee Reese in publicly putting a hand of support on Jackie Robinson's shoulder had large impacts on the world. Shore weaves his message about the value of trying to line up our actions with our beliefs amidst this backdrop of stories that show how fallible we all can be. Highly recommended. Not an academic tome, but a pleasurable read.

In the introduction Paul Shore explains that most books written in Antiquity deal with men. Women and children are ignored (besides a few exceptions). With inscriptions it's a different matter. Thanks to the widespread of litteracy in the Roman empire many 'common' folk wrote inscriptions on walls (the early graffity), on tombstones and on tablets in temples. They tell something about everyday life like in this excerpt of A Charioteers' Grave (P.Shore gives the entire translation):
We the members of his team 'Veneta',
          Dedicate this altar to Fuscus,
          ...
          Unblemished fame was yours.
You earned the praise of the race course
As you strove with many, fearing none,
          ...

There were also more 'philosophical' inscriptions like this one:
          What are we
          Or what do we say
          At last this life is?
          Just that a man has
          Lived among us
          And now is no more.
          Just the stone
          And the inscription remain,
          And no other traces.
          Now what
          Is life?
          It is nothing that
          You should trouble yourself
          To inquire about.

There are also thirteen black and white photo's of tombstones. Altogether a very interesting book.
