Book Description
Beyond Enders Boxed Mass Market Set
Contains: Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide and Children of the Mind
Speaker for the Dead:
In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: The Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War.
Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth.
Xenocide:
The war for survival of the planet Lusitania will be fought in the hearts of a child named Gloriously Bright.
On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequininos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last. Or so he thought.
Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to become adults. The Startways Congress so fears the effects of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered eh destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there. The Fleet is on its way, a second xenocide seems inevitble.
Children of the Mind:
The planet Lusitania is home to three sentient species: the Pequeninos; a large colony of humans; and the Hive Queen, brought there by Ender. But once against the human race has grown fearful; the Starways Congress has gathered a fleet to destroy Lusitania.
Jane, the evolved computer intelligence, can save the three sentient races of Lusitania. She has learned how to move ships outside the universe, and then instantly back to a different world, abolishing the light-speed limit. But it takes all the processing power available to her, and the Starways Congress is shutting down the Net, world by world.
Soon Jane will not be able to move the ships. Ender's children must save her if they are to save themselves.

Beyond Ender's Game (3 books).......2007-08-24
Read them! Kids and adults alike! You will love them. Be sure you read "Ender's Game" first. One of my all-time favorites! (I'm 68 years old.)

Not worth the purchase.......2007-05-15
By the end of Ender's Game, the Ender story feels complete. Author Card may have agreed, as the following stories take Ender and his tale in an entirely new direction. If you just stick to Ender's Game, you won't feel at a loss. These stories feel extraneous and the characters are too certain of their own righteousness to be believable.
More in Sci-fi, but less in strategy (sometimes brilliant but sometimes...).......2007-02-28
I have read the whole ender series, but with a strange sequence which may have affected the way I view the different books in the series. The first book I have read was the Shadow of the Hegemon, thanks to a tourist that had left it in the library of a hotel in Skiathos island. This book got me hooked, but it confused me also as I didn't know if I should start reading the next books or the previous ones.
The general pattern in the whole series is:
The beginning book is Ender's Game. Then we have two subcategories, one the Shadow series (which, with the exception of the first book, take place on earth and are more within military strategy) and one the Ender series (which take place in space and are more into new sci-fi ideas). Shadow series probably can be read from everyone, while I guess that the Ender series (especially from Speaker for the Dead onwards) would be read mainly from sci-fi fans.
Below are my comments for the books of the series, in the order I have read them and a marking (10 is the highest mark):
Shadow of the Hegemon: The first book I have read, and which I could not leave from my hands. I finished it in 2 days. It was fast paced action, very smart plot and after reading it I believed that Orson Scot Card (OSC) has invented/re-invented a new genre of literature. That of military strategy and adventure combined with brilliance/mind games and hidden portions of romance. Such books always existed but this seemed to be THE book. It was like the way Dan Brown re-invented books with trivials and puzzles, together with fast paced adventure. I strongly recommend it to everybody that likes such type of books. (mark: 10)
Shadow puppets: The sequel to the above. I found it interesting but somehow boring as the above story developed little and the focus was on the characters (maybe too much focus so that it seemed to me that it was slightly mumbling jumbling. Strategy, brilliance and adventure seemed to be very low here. I would not recommend it for anybody to read it in isolate, unfortunately you have to read it if you want to go to the next book. I really believe that OSC made a mistake here (deliberately or not) as this book should have been told in 50-60 pages and be included in the previous or the next book. (mark: 6 but you will read it because you will want to read Shadow of the Giant)
Shadow of the Giant: (see below)
Ender's game: A really great book to read, probably the best of the series, however, as I had read its sequels first, when I reached the 80% of this book, I had predicted the end. However, it's at the highest standards of sci-fi, military strategy, adventure, brilliant mind games and very good depth in the human aspect of the characters. In comparison to the shadow series, it is more "space" sci-fi, while shadow series have much lesser sci-fi elements and are more down to earth. (mark: 10)
Speaker for the dead: Another great book, but different style. Less adventure, more human aspect, more maturity. Brilliance yes, but not military, sci-fi yes (some great ideas) but not spaceship style. (Mark: 9)
Xenocide: A good sequel of the previous novel. In certain points more brilliant, in other sections more boring, however is again a very good sci-fi book. The only flaw in these series (Speker for the dead, Xenocide, Children of the mind) is the idea behind one of the alien species described which I found outrageously extreme, however if you ignore it becomes first class reading. (Mark: 9)
Children of the mind: I think that OSC has wrapped up his case pretty badly in that one. It's a fair book except the fact that I felt that OSC mumbles jumbles for one third of the novel not having decided how to end it. In other critiques I have found it described as nice approach to moral dilemmas, however, moral dilemma is when you describe it once and make your choice, while here the dilemma is repeated and repeated... I felt like I was watching a movie worth 10 oscars and the end did not worth to be included even in a cheap video movie. And again, many open ends at the end (for possible sequels). (Mark: 7 but you will read it as you will be hooked from the previous ones).
Ender's shadow: Having read Enders Game and Shadow of the Hegemon, I found this book probably the best of the series, which of course is my subjective preference. I could characterize it as probably the best book I have read ever! Not to repeat myself, it has all that Shadow of the Hegemon and Ender's Game have, and even more...(Mark: the absolute 10).
Shadow of the Giant: When I read shadow puppets, I said, "that's it, OSC has lost either his talent or his appetite for good writing...", so I was pretty unwilling to read it. Fortunately I decided to, as it proved to be a good one, were I believe that OSC has nicely wrapped up his story, with two small flaws.
* The one is described below (its end needed to be slightly more complete) and,
* The other is the fact that although he describes certain smart battles, he does not focus enough on them as it seems that he is in a hurry to wrap all things up. It had all elements to become a masterpiece but it ended up being a good to read book (Mark: 9)
In general, both series have three categories of good stuff:
1) Some great sci-fi ideas (battle room, battle games, fantasy game, ansible, aia, Jane, in/out travel, raman varelse etc)
2) Great military strategy, mind games etc combined with adventure
3) In certain books, depth of characters, moral dilemmas etc
And two main bad stuff:
1) Mumbling jumbling in certain books which was completely unnecessary (either OSC wanted just to produce and sell another title - see shadow puppets- or he could not decide how the story will continue-see last book of Ender series).
2) One of the alien species described in the Ender series was so too outrageous even for sci-fi that made it look ridiculous. The idea behind it was brilliant in sci-fi terms, but he could try a different living organism...
Finally, OSC has left open ends in both series (probably for next sequels), however I believe that there are two things missing. a) the story of the Hive Queen and the Hegemon, told in a metaphorical manner so it means much for humanity. b) In ancient theatre, a story should end in a way that brings "katharsis" to the story, and the souls of the readers. I believe that the end of the shadow of the giant may be smart for commercial purposes but it was very unfair to the reader as it did not bring full "katharsis".
Read one you will rember this is it.......2007-02-03
I love this series if you like a good story this is the one . Follow the lives of thes childern see them save the world. These books are great for all ages I bought this set for two of my brothers and there wifes. All have enjoyed them emensly.
The Intrigue Continues.......2007-01-15
You don't want to be left wondering do you? The imagination is fed and the enjoyment is even richer with this second series.

This monstrously huge module is worth every penny.......2004-02-26
This monster of a module is the penultimate CoC adventure. In every way it is what a module ought to be: Elegent (despite its bulk!), open-ended, and chock full of action and mystery to keep the players interested. I cannot recommend this book enough. Chaosium really outdid themselves!
Not A Bad Book, But Not Really Anything Special.......2003-05-03
Don't be mislead by the size of this monster. This book puts ALOT of detail into each chapter so it appears much bigger and longer than it actually is.
It's not that bad but it's kind of simple but it is fun if you like a real straightforward kind of story. It's also got alot of great source information about Antarctica in the back.
It's not a bad buy but it is pretty over priced for what it is. I felt jipped out of what I spent. I'd reccomend this book if you found it for cheap but don't waste money that you could spend on something better.
Best Module ever.......2002-11-22
It is hard not to use an adjective that has not been used here. This is an incredibly good module, and its size and scope is breathtaking. The size and depth of playability beggers belief- weighing well in at over 400 pages, this module will take a group of players about a year of solid gaming to complete.
The plot is based on the H P Lovecraft story o fthe sma ename and plunges the players into an Antartoc expedition, and a search for the last vanished expedition. Amply filled with source material, there is enough for a keeper to pick up and run with, or material to fill out. We spent 2 long sessions merely investigating the kidknapping in the second chapter.
The remarkable thing is you can actually read this and be entertained- its that good. If you have one and have played it, for goodness sakes sell it- this is a treasure.
The materials provided are excellent, and really add a depth to play that you will be hard pressed to replicate elsewhere.
Grade: A+++
Two great books in one.......2002-05-01
This colossal volume combines both an epic adventure, based on Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" and a complete Antarctica sourcebook. The level of detail is extraordinary. Special investigator sheets are included, with stats specific to an Antarctic investigator.
Oh Boy! Make sure you are prepared before you embark on this adventure. "Beyond the Mountains of Madness" is an incredible investment in time and energy. The book assumes that the keeper has read and is familiar with both "At the Mountains of Madness" as well as Poe's "Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket." (As far as preparation goes, this is a joy. They are both great books, and should be read anyways.) It took our group about 5 months to complete, and we skipped several optional sections. The adventure takes place in several chapters, including preparing for the trip, the ocean trip to Antarctica, on Antarctica, and then the trip home.
The book is a challenge for both keepers and players. If done well, this will be one of your best adventures ever.
Even non-gamer Lovecraft fans will like this........2001-07-23
And that's the essence of my "review." More of a recomendation really. This massive tome is - if not THE best, certainly one of the best game supplements ever. However, you don't have to play CoC to enjoy it. "At the Mountains of Madness" is one of Lovecrafts best tales and this gaming supplement provides a wonderful "what if" scenario that extends and explores the ramifications of that short novel. If you are any sort of a fan of Lovecraft you will find plenty to enjoy here, gamer or no.

FAITHFUL TO MYTHOS SPIRIT WHILE REMAINING ORIGINAL.......2007-07-25
After reading the excellent review of HORRORS BEYOND by Matthew Carpenter, it's hard to think of anything to add to the discussion. For what it's worth, I thought it a great anthology. Genre fiction can become stale and repetitive; HORRORS BEYOND impressed me beyond anything I expected.
Nothing here is "filler", which is considerably better than any other anthology I've picked up. There were a few stories that struck me as trading substance for genre style ("The Candle Room" was maybe the worst at this). I can think of three stories, though, where I finished reading but could not stop thinking about the story; those were "Experiencing the Other", "One Way Conversation", and "False Containment" (the last of which has left me with images that I'm afraid I'll never be free of). When the horror is so gripping that you can not continue reading but you cannot stop thinking, then you have read a rare crafting of language and imagination. In my mind, that is high praise.
NIce addition..........2007-05-29
Without going into the merits of each story, I can say that the book is a worthwhile buy for those interested in the ol' HPL genre.
There were some storied that I felt failed (aren't there always?), but the majority of the stories were great and really kept my attention and interest.
Even in a sunny location. So for those stories, I have to say this belongs on a "cultist's" shelf.
A great book..........2007-05-21
I bought this book primarily as a resource for running role-playing games such as Call of Cthulhu or Delta Green. With that sort of expectation in mind, I was very pleased with my purchase.
My favorite stories are the ones that stood out as something I could use in my games. Those stories were:
* One Way Conversation: Like other reviewers here, I found this story to be the best by far. A scientist comes up with the technology to send messages back in time, and so starts receiving mysterious and threatening messages from the future.
* The Prototype: A TV allows monsters to crawl out and terrorize the real world. A bit hokey, but fun.
* False COntainment: This is another time travel story. I really like the idea of a private company getting rid of its trash by sending it through a wormhole. Unfortunately, they don't know where, or when, the refuse arrives. Imagine a team of archeaologists stumbling upon modern day garbage at an Incan burial site. Utterly strange...
* His Wonders in the Deep: This is a great mystery that involves the sole survivors of a mysterious ship sinking succumbing to the same horrible death. One man investigates and stumbles upon the horrific truth.
Most of the rest of the stories are pretty good as simple fiction. There are, however, a few misfires that prevent me from giving this book a 5-star rating. Dingbats and The Blind didn't strike me as very horrifying or Lovecraftian.
But still, a recommend this book for fans of horror fiction.
A mixed bag.......2006-09-13
A book of horror stories with one outstanding story, a couple good ones and the rest just average.
Starting with the best, "One Way Conversation" by Brian M. Sammons
This is a wonderful story, easily the best in the collection. It's about a revolutionary form of communication which encompasses time travel that is discovered by a brilliant physicist and the dire consequences that follow. This is probably the only story I would classify as a page-turner, one where I was anxious to find out what happens. The setting, characters and sci-fi ideas are all done masterfully. I'd love to see Mr. Sammons put out a short story collection, if he can consistently reach the quality of his work here. I agree with a previous reviewer that this story alone is worth the price of the book.
"The Eyes of Howard Curlix" by Tim Curran
I enjoyed this story, a traditional Lovecraft-style horror story involving a scientist whose eyes are affected by an experiment gone awry, and his new unwanted visions as a result. I especially liked the tabloid reporter angle, which was pretty funny. This was probably the most traditional story in the book written in the Lovecraft theme.
"The Blind" by Gerard Houarner
I loved the change of pace this story represented. This is unlike any other story in the book, very original. A female dirt poor drug addict (but with a refined intelligence) roams the filthy streets of an inner city wasteland looking for the ultimate high, and finds an unlikely redemption instead. I really liked the end of this story, and thought it was well done and uplifting.
These three stories were the ones that I noted as good to great, while the rest were unremarkable. However, the story "The Hades Project" by John Sunseri had an excellent plot and story idea, but I didn't like the execution. I felt the potential of the story was much greater than the final product.
A couple of gems, a bunch of mediocrity.......2006-09-05
I picked up this book at Dragon*Con 2006 and read it on the airplane. On the whole, the stories are of decent quality; the first few in particular were engaging and very well-written. I particularly enjoyed "One Way Conversation"; I was forced to stop reading this one halfway through because our plane landed in Denver, and I was rushing to our next gate just so I could pick it up again and finish it.
If you pick up this book, however, I strongly urge you to rip out pages 183 through 234 before you start reading. Two of the stories in this collection -- "The Prototype" and "False Containment" were very poorly written, with linguistic constructions that had me gritting my teeth every few sentences and very little sense of pacing. "False Containment" at least had an intriguing idea, but the story felt more like an outline than a finished piece of work to me. "The Prototype" seemed hackneyed and cliched, and I honestly could not understand how this story made it into the collection. "Dingbats" was completely incoherent, and I gave up on it halfway through, since I had absolutely no idea what was going on, despite having reread the first few pages twice, nor any sense of where the story was going, and I had no idea who I was supposed to sympathize with.
After "Dingbats" the quality picks up again, though none of the stories after that rise up to the same quality as "One Way Conversation". These stories are mediocre, nothing earth shattering, but decent brain candy for a two hour flight.
On the whole: there are a couple of gems in this collection which I'm glad I read, but the overall quality ranges from abysmal to mediocre. For that reason, I would hesitate to recommend this collection.

J-Horror is must-have for anyone watching Asian horror films.......2007-08-10
A terrific book! I also have ASIA SHOCK, which is great, but I think this one is even better, and I hope the author will do an updated edition in another year (if not sooner!). The only thing I would add is an index; there's a lot of great information in here, and index would be a huge help. Otherwise, full marks for a wonderful book that I dip into time and time again!
A Real Tear-jerker.......2005-12-02
I came across this little book while browsing the Japanese lit section of my local bookstore and although I'd never heard of Mr. Haitani's work before it proved quite rewarding.
The story of an inexperienced though extremely earnest young elementary school teacher in a bad part of Kobe who sets out to turn the homeroom from hell into a class of little angels; this book is quite a tear-jerker.
The story is set on 'the wrong side of the tracks' at a dirty and neglected elementary school situated right next door to a garbage disposal plant. Most of the students are the children of the disposal plant workers, and they live and play amidst the filth and squalor of the plant; catching rats and pigeons, scrapping with each other, and sometimes scamming the other students for money to buy food when Dad gambles or drinks away his pay check. The view this book offers is a far cry from the spic and span, regimented image most people have of Japanese schools.
The story begins with young Miss Kotani taking the reins of a first grade classroom only to retreat to the teachers' room before the end of the day in tears, after a student named Tetsuzo kills the pet frog the children were raising for a nature project. Although terrified of the boy (who later attacks her and one of his classmates as well) she is determined not to see him as a bad child, and with the help of a gruff but loveable senior teacher Mr. Adachi (known as the Yakuza teacher); she sets out to befriend him and the other disposal plant children.
Over the course of the book she becomes close to the plant children, by listening to them and treating them with respect where previous teachers had thought of them as human garbage and refused to allow them to help at meal times for fear they would contaminate the school lunches. She shares their lives and learns that even the seemingly bizarre and uncommunicative Tetsuzo (he rarely says more than yeah, no, or uh-huh) has something to offer in the form of an encyclopaedic knowledge of flies which he later puts to good use to help a local business.
Although the characters are somewhat cliched, the dialogue rather contrived (or perhaps just badly translated), and the plot as a whole sappy in the extreme, there's no denying that this is a very touching, heart-warming, and affirming book that will have you in tears for pages at a time. I recommend it highly to anyone who wants to have a good cry.
A book that will give you hope........2005-11-17
This has been one of the most popular novels that deal with the problems of education in Japan. As a teacher with more than 23 years of experience in Japanese school I have thought I could understand him very well. Now I am beginning to realize that so far I have not understood him. Once I began to understand that the life can be very hard for certain people, I began to understand him. Now my life is a little bit hard, becase I have a special kid as my son. If you have a certain handicap, then the life looks very different. Then you know the meaning of education and the role a teacher can have at school.
Mr.Haitani is a man who knows the reality of life deeply. His background make him understand people in a difficult situation of life, and he also knows how love can help people and give them hope.
Now his books are giving me hope and teaching me what to teach at school.

Romer Zane Grey, Beyond The Mogollon Rim.......2007-04-03
Book was not written by Zane Grey, but by his son. He is nowhere near the author that his father was. There were numerous typos and mistakes all through the book. I bought the book beleiving it was written by Zane
Grey, but it was based on characters created by Zane Grey.
Very dissapointing.
Zane Grey.......2007-03-25
I was really surprised that there was another Nevada book by Zane Grey. I had originally wanted another copy of the first book, Nevada, but when I saw this one I just had to buy it. Thanks!

Book Description
Hard to believe that gay horror writer Steve Geary could present a collection of stories just as strange, if not more so, than Twisted TAles from the Tank, but that is precisely what's he's done here with On Beyond Twisted! Brimming with sadistic, stomach-churning violence and a number of eye-popping illustrations, On Beyond Twisted! is one of the most bizarre anthology ever presented in paperback. It's like the Chainsaw Massacre on gay steriods.

Book Description
(Please add this description to the PAPERBACK listing for "The Soul Beyond Darkness". All that is shown currently is a Table of Contests.) SYNOPSIS:
Based on true events, this haunting story from the 1970's has never been made public until now...
Forewarned that ghosts may haunt his new residence, Doug Conroy rents the hundred year-old house, anyway. But as soon as he moves in, paranormal phenomena strike without warning and soon escalate into a battle of `good vs. evil'.
This ordeal takes place in Marin County, across the Golden Gate from San Francisco. As a newcomer to California's entertainment industry, Doug strives to balance his Midwestern values with the counter-culture pursuits of organic gurus and new-age idealists. Then...his career is interrupted by ominous events that threaten his sanity and...possibly his life!
For readers who want a thrilling, yet believable haunted house story, they will find The Soul Beyond Darkness a refreshing alternative to cliche' horror stories that capitalize on shallow "blood-and-guts" plots. On the contrary, herein lies a suspenseful chronology of terrifying encounters with the dark side of the spiritual realm.
Customer Reviews:
superb!.......2003-11-14
The first 2-3 chapters are slow but is definitely important to introduce the characters in the book. Once I started reading it, I can't put down the book anymore. I really enjoyed reading it because of the different combination of everything like a touch of romance, a little bit of comedy and especially the good part, the thrill, horror and suspense. This book will definitely keep your imagination active.I sure dont want to missed another book like this of Scott Ebright.More power and God bless!!

A Soul beyond Compare.......2003-03-22
Yes, I liked this book. I finished reading it in under 24 hours. That is a compliment all by itself! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes a good believable ghost story; however the first three chapters are slow but interesting. Then, the story really grips you and demands you continue reading it to find out what happens next. You can't put it down. I found the characters to be everyday people that you can empathize with and I would read more books by this author if and when they become available.
The first real good story I've read in years........2003-03-02
First real good story I've read in years.
I was very, very impressed with this story. I liked many aspects of this story. It was more than a typical horror story. Also, this is a book somebody can read and enjoy without the vulgarity found in so many other books. I recommend this to anyone like me who hasn't had time to read alot of books, but when I do, it had better be good!
Intriguing! Couldn't put it down!.......2003-01-10
I read this book during a week I was supposed to be studying for final exams (4th year broadcasting major). I just kept on and on, reading one chapter after the next because everytime I tried to stop thinking about this story, it kept coming back into my head so I couldn't concentrate on anything else. This book was a lot different than any other mystery or horror book I ever read. It was very suspenseful without being extreme or gross like most of those other books of the same genre. Maybe that's because this was a true story. Anyway, I liked everything about this story - especially the characters. The author (Ebright) seemed to know just when to change scenes or add a little levity here and there so I wouldn't get too worn out by the heavy subject matter of ghosts or demonic entities. It seemed to be a good balance...I was hooked into reading the whole book within two-a-half days! And the surprise I discovered was that unlike any other scary book I've read, this one left me feeling more positive about myself and my own spirituality. (Incidentally, I used this book as a basis for my semester project to adapt a book to a one hour screenplay.)
a mystical adventure.......2003-01-01
this is the human experience on all the levels. it was one of the best books i have ever read. bravo!
