Harry Turtledove pays tribute to pulp science fiction, combining a favorite plot--invasion by technologically superior aliens--with an alternate history of WWII and its aftermath. His Worldwar Series began the story when a fleet of lizard-like aliens arrived to conquer Earth in May 1942. It ended in 1945 with a negotiated peace between the Race, the nuclear powers (the Reich, the USSR, and the USA), and the much-weakened Britain and Japan.

Colonization: Second Contact continues the saga, but you need not read the previous series to enjoy it. When the colonists arrive in 1962, they're unprepared for a half-conquered world. After several of their ships are destroyed by a nuclear missile of mysterious origin, they accuse the conquest forces of incompetence. Muslims in the conquered Middle East are staging an Intifada, the Chinese Communists continue guerrilla warfare against the invaders, and everyone's smuggling ginger, which is powerfully addictive among the Race and has unanticipated effects on the female colonists.

Turtledove's cast of characters includes sharply drawn alien soldiers and civilians as well as a mix of convincing historical and fictional humans from all over the world. He covers all the sixties issues: generational conflict, the drug culture, racial inequality, the threat of atomic apocalypse, and the frustration of soldiers in an unwinnable war. If you enjoy alternate history and old B movies, this book's for you. --Nona Vero

      Book Description

In the extraordinary Worldwar tetralogy, set against the backdrop of the World War II, Harry Turtledove, the "Hugo-winning master of alternate SF" (Publishers Weekly), wove an explosive saga of world powers locked in conflict against an enemy from the stars. Now he expands his magnificent epic into the volatile 1960s, when the space race is in its infancy and humanity must face its greatest challenge: alien colonization of planet Earth.

Yet even in the shadow of this inexorable foe, the United States, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany are unable to relinquish their hostilities and unite against a massive new wave of extraterrestrials. For all the countries of the world, this is the greatest threat of all. This time, the terrible price of defeat will be the conquest of our world, and perhaps the extinction of the human race itself.

        Book Description

Even though second-language learners may master the grammar and vocabulary of the new languages, they almost never achieve a native phonology (accent). Scholars and professionals dealing with second-language learners would agree that this is one of the most persistent challenges they face.

Now, for the first time, Roy Major's Foreign Accent covers the exploding scholarship in this area and lays out the issues specifically for audiences in the second language acquisition and applied linguistics community.

        Book Description

Illegal Alphabets and Adult Biliteracy--based on four years of intensive fieldwork in a small rural community in Southern Illinois--is a landmark work in the area of adult literacy, combining insights from linguistics, anthropology, literacy studies, and education in a culturally situated exploration of the language and literacy practices of migrant workers. As such, it is a substantive contribution to the linguistic study of indigenous literacies; to sociocultural approaches to language, learning, and literacy; and to ethnographic and critical approaches to education.

The book begins with a true story about "illegal aliens" who, in the summer of 1980, in the town of Cobden, Illinois, decided to help each other write down English como de veras se oye--the way it really sounds. The focus is on why and how they did this, what they actually wrote down, and what happened to their texts. The narrative then shifts to how and why the strategies adult immigrants actually use in order to cope with English in the real world seem to have little in common with those used by students in publicly funded bilingual and ESL classrooms. The book concludes with a discussion of the ideal of a universal alphabet, about the utopian claim that anyone can use a canonical set of 26 letters to reduce to script any language, ever spoken by anyone, anywhere, at any time. This claim is so familiar that it is easy to overlook how much undocumented intellectual labor was invested over the centuries by those who successfully carried the alphabet across the border from one language to the next. From this undocumented labor, without which none of us would now be able to read, everyone profits.

To make his story and his argument as accessible as possible, Kalmar steers clear of jargon and excessive technical terminology. At the same time, however, readers who are familiar with any of the current postmodern discourses on the social construction of symbolic forms will be able to bring such discourses to bear on what he has to say about the game, the discourse, and the scene of writing that constitute the focus of his theoretical analysis.

When people today argue about "illegal aliens" in the United States, probably the last question on their minds is the one to which this book is devoted: how do "illegal aliens" use an alphabet they already know in order to chart the speech sounds of colloquial English? It is the author's hope that readers will interpret his story as a parable with serious political implications. Illegal Alphabets and Adult Biliteracy is a compelling, vitally relevant book for researchers, students, practitioners, and anyone else interested in language and literacy in social, cultural, and political contexts, including bilingual and ESL education, second-language acquisition and development, applied and sociolinguistics, multicultural education, educational anthropology, and qualitative research.

5 out of 5 stars Great Linguistic scholarship that's also fun reading!.......2003-12-11

I was impressed with this book not only because of Tomas Kalmar's clear mastery of the topic and knowledge of linguistics but also because of how flat out fun the book was to read: engaging and to the point, this book takes a serious look at what it's like to be a migrant worker in the US, struggling with language barriers and discrimination and highlights the strength of the Latino community. Because of the detailed linguistic content, I'm using it for a coursebook next semester. Because it's a fine read, I'm giving it as a gift to nonlinguist friends. BTW: if you happen to be English/Spanish bilingual, there are some very funny bits!

        4 out of 5 stars Passionate Scholarship.......2003-06-09

Tomás Kalmar's book is a charming combination of personal experience and erudite scholarship, written in an engaging fashion. The author's treatment of the politics of biliteracy, from the fruit-groves of the Midwest to the halls of academe, is both passionate and clear-sighted. The alert reader will also enjoy observing evidence of Kalmar's wide-ranging interests threading through the fabric of the book, notably his fondness for music and his fascination with mathematical and proto-mathematical thinking.

Everyone knew que los indocumentados rendered an invaluable service to the economic stability of the fruit-pickers market, pero el zumbido tenue-yet constant-que se generaba no dejaba de ser escudriñado by those who wanted to mend the suffering and injustice. Era necesario romper la barrera del silencio. Había que legitimizar the apparent reticence among migrant mexican workers dándoles herramientas para decodificar the seeminlgy impenetrable, iron-clad English language.
Había que razonar: even though English and Spanish share the same alphabet (con la excepción de la ll y la ñ), both adhere to pronunciation keys that are radically different. Bajo la tutela de Kalmar, a new language emerged. Entre lo correcto y lo incorrecto, between the sound and the written text, una comunidad de estudiantes y maestros began to write English como de veras se oía. Hence, the Cobden Glossaries emerged líricamente. Nació, luego de interminables noches de juego y debate, un tomo lírico, suntuoso, complejo, sinewy, yet veritable, dónde la palabra juellulib nestled una verdad tan significante y legítima como la oración where do you live.

The silences que Kalmar interpreta in his manifesto son aquellos silencios que dejan atrás lo clandestino para sumergirse en lo legítimo. The migrant workers yearned for legitimacy. En esa mesa redonda in which students and teachers investigaban diversos modos de encaminarse a la comunicación, existió the possibility that silence would be pricked and made to transform itself into something dynamic and resilient, en algo que puediese reintegrar y redefinir a la comunidad.

          Product Description

This book tells the story of the contacts and conflicts between muslims and christians in Southeast Asia during the Dutch colonial history from 1596 until 1950. The author draws from a great variety of sources to shed light on this period: the letters of the colonial pioneer Jan Pietersz. Coen, the writings of 17th century Dutch theologians, the minutes of the Batavia church council, the contracts of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) with the sultans in the Indies, documents from the files of colonial civil servants from the 19th and 20th centuries, to mention just a few. The colonial situation was not a good starting-point for a religious dialogue. With Dutch power on the increase there was even less understanding for the religion of the muslims . In 1620 J.P. Coen, the strait-laced calvinist, had actually a better understanding and respect for the muslims than the liberal colonial leaders from the early 20th century, convinced as they were of western supremacy. Dr. Steenbrink (b. 1942) studied christian theology and islam at the university of Nijmegen. In 1970-1971 he was a student at an Islamic training-college in Indonesia. He was the first non-muslim to hold a teaching post at the State Academies of Islamic Studies of Jakarta and Yogyakarta from 1981 until 1988. At present he is a member of the staff of the Interuniversity Institute for Missiological and Ecumenical Research (IIMO) at Leyden. In addition he is the chief editor of the magazine BEGRIP (Understanding) which aims at improving relations between christians and muslims. Twenty years of intensive contacts with muslims have taught him that improving these relations is no simple matter which can be tackled lightheartedly. Yet he also projected the starting-points for an islamic-christian theological study group. In the concluding chapters of this book he outlines some historic and at the same time topical backgrounds for the need for such a theological study group. Contents: Forward By Dr. H. Book Description

This book gives an in-depth analysis of the use of the english language in modern Japan. It explores the many ramifications the Japanese-English language and culture contact situation has for not only Japanese themselves, but also others in the international community.

Data for this book has been gathered using anthropological ethnographic fieldwork, augmented by archival sources, written materials, and items from popular culture and the mass media. An interdisciplinary approach, including those of anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive science and symbolic anthropology, is taken in the exploration of the topics here. This book's arguments focus on four major theoretical linguistic and social issues, namely the place of the Japanese-English case in the larger context of "World Englishes"; the place of the Japanese-English case in a general theory of language and culture contact; how Japanese English informs problems of categorization, meaning construction and cognition; and what it says about the social construction of identity and sense of self, nationalism and race.

This book will be of interest to linguists, anthropologists, sociologists, cognitive scientists, and all readers who are interested in language contact, sociolinguistics, English as an international language, and World Englishes. It will also appeal to those who are interested in Japan and popular culture.

5 out of 5 stars Great title for research papers in this field.......2006-05-17

I recently wrote a research paper analyzing the usage of English in Japanese manga, and found this books approach to the subject quite useful. Originally it was only something I borrowed on Inter Library Loan, but after reading a few chapters, I knew I had to have the book. The writing style is easy to read and the topics he touches upon in each chapter are focused and interesting. Since there are not listed, here are the chapter titles in the book:

            1) Prologue 2) The dynamics of English words in contemporary Japanese: Japanese English and a 'beautiful human life' 3) The history of Japanese English language contact 4) The Japanese writing system and English 5) The poetics of English in Japanese pop songs and contemporary verse 6) A new voice: The use of English as a new rhetoric in modern Japanese women's language 7) Using the graphic and pictorial image to explore Japan's 'Empire of Signs' 8) Is it naisu rice or good gohan?: In Japan, it's not what you eat, but how you say it 9) Language and culture contact in the Japanese colour of nomenclature system: From neon oranges to shocking pinks 10) Sense, sensation, and symbols: English in the realm of the senses 11) Images of race and identity in Japanese and American language and culture contact 12) Japan, English, and World Englishes

As you can see, there is a wide spread of topics that the book covers in regards to English in the Japanese language, and most are quite interesting!

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Insight.......2005-07-25

Stanlaw presents us with the Japanese way of using English. In particular, he goes into detail about the use of English loanwords in Japanese for advertising, packaging, pop songs, and so forth. According to Stanlaw, these are not really loanwords, but English inspired creations. In other words, Japanese are using English for their own purposes in ways which they can appreciate rather than copying the usage of native speakers. It's a very interesting theory. The only reason for giving this four stars instead of five is that Stanlaw fails to make a distinction between English terms that are standard in Japanese and faddish terms, so quite a few of the examples that he provides are out of date and not used anymore. It would have been nice to make this distinction, and to elaborate on the processes behind both forms of usage. Other than that complaint, the ideas he presents in this book are very fascinating. I would recommend this to those who are thinking of teaching in Japan, or those who are studying Japanese overseas. You'll gain some insight into the Japanese use of language.

This is one of those lawyer must solve case and get his client off type books. A spaceship captain kills a couple of his crew and claims he did it because they were alien infiltrators. No-one believes him and everyone thinks that he is crazy.

His lawyer doesn't think he is sane either, until he investigates with the help of a friend. Then people start trying to kill him.

4 out of 5 stars An Engaging Sci Fi Mystery - but dated.......2002-10-26

Second Contact is a hard to put down Sci Fi mystery. Military lawyer Maj Max Becker doesn't believe his client is sane when he claims that the two crewmembers he killed were aliens, but he will argue the defense that his client wants. Suddenly, though, witnesses begin to disappear, and Max begins to suspect that maybe something really is being covered up. With the help of a hard-nosed computer genius, Max is in a race to discover the truth before the two of them wind up dead.

I really enjoyed this book. I had trouble putting it down and was in a hurry to find out what really was going on. However the computer science Second Contact is terribly dated. The novel seems to have been published in 1990 before the internet took off. A major portion of the plot is uncovered by breaking into computer systems, but there is no mention of the internet. All access is achieved modems and the phone system. At one point they use the Library of Congress, "the biggest English language database in the world", whereas now the same research would have been done on the web. Although the novel is set in 2065, none of the computer technology used is beyond what exsisted in the late 80s except for some voice recognition. It doesn't take the enjoyment out of the read, but it makes it seem like a classic novel from the 50s and 60s where you ignore the flawed science.

Overall Second Contact is a very enjoyable, hard-to-put-down read, and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A Review of this Book.......2000-06-18

I read this book last night. I enjoyed it completely. It was a strong book overall, but there was one problem: my copy was missing every page after 270, without an ending. In fact, the last word was not even complete. Luckily, I got the rest of the book, but when I finished it, the ending seemed weak. I mean, come on, "Then Becker... _really_ went to work." That has got to be the worst ending I've seen in a while. I still recommend the book though. It is relatively realistic, funny and serious at the same time, enough to make it a book that I didn't want to put down.

                5 out of 5 stars Second Contact: A Sci-Fi Mystery -- X-Files meets JAG.......2000-04-04

Second Contact by Mike Resnick is a wonderfully constructed futuristic mystery novel. The book focuses on a military lawyer who has to defend a starship commander. The commander is brought up on murder charges because he killed a fellow officer. The commander did this because he felt that the other officer was an alien. Well, things aren't what they seem. The lawyer starts investigating the case and, right away, he realizes that someone -- or something -- doesn't want the truth to be found. I won't tell you the ending but it is clever and quite shocking -- but intelligent.

While this novel may appear like the TV series the X-Files at first glance (it actually preceded that series by a few years), Resnick adds his unique sense of wry humor to the novel. This is refreshing because it seems that many authors take sci-fi too seriously or not seriously enough. Resnick has found the perfect balance.
