Easy Read.......2007-08-29
Easy book to read. Good to read for short blurbs or sit and read chapter after chapter. It is detailed and show lots of examples.
Satisfied .......2007-08-23
This book is perfect for beginner photographers that are making the leap from a point-and-click camera to a DSLR. The author provided clear and concise explanations that helped me understand how my camera functions and he also provided basic photography concepts. The author came across as modest and added a tad of humor, which made for an enjoyable reading experience. I definitely recommend this book as well as thoroughly reading through your owner's manual and you should be taking great pictures in no time!
Great beginner book that covers the most of the digital photography world.......2007-06-15
This book is good for those who don't know much about the digital photography world, such as flash cards, the digital sensors, etc. It also covers how to choose a DSLR camera and the accessories for it. The book also gives you a good beginners primer on how to take pictures. It covers all aspects but a bit shallow. If you're thinking about getting a DSLR and are also brand new to photography in general, this is the book you want. If you already know how to take pictures well and are moving from a film SLR to a digital, you can learn the digital nuances online. No need to buy the book. For just taking pictures, I learned a lot more from Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson.
Digital SLR.......2007-04-19
This book has a lot of information about the basics about Digital SLR cameras. The only compaint is that I got frustrated with the many "see page __" - I don't like to keep jumping around in a book.
A really good book is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson - it's taught me the most about how to take a good picture.
excellent book.......2007-04-02
Excellent reading for those who had not contact with digital or slr photography (as myself) maybe a little bit boring for those who have (not me) because it describes basic and deep fact about cameras and photography step by step
Average customer rating:
- Any library appealing to amateur photographers will find it a welcome reference.
- It's ok but cold be better.
- Very good info for beginner, intermediate shooter.

Any library appealing to amateur photographers will find it a welcome reference........2007-07-27
THE DIGITAL SLR GUIDE: BEYOND POINT-AND-SHOOT DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY covers the many options of the latest cameras, which typically combine features from 35mm cameras with a better storage and delivery system. A digital SLR can make for great pictures - but photographers moving from 'point-and-shoot' to this mode are typically confused and lost over all the options and possibilities of both shooting and using popular image-editing software. This guide is the place to begin: it covers all accessories, features, how to adopt expert techniques for shooting the best photos, and how to edit images for maximum results. Any library appealing to amateur photographers will find it a welcome reference.

It's ok but cold be better........2007-03-21
A easy and quick book to read, but I didn't get out as much as I thought I would.
I feel less theory and more practical examples/scenarios would have been in order. Also the book contains a lot of white space making it much bigger than it needed to be.
A few image errors really let it down:
fig 2.15 p34 - how is the car speeding down a freway with out a driver ?-)
fig 2.12 p31 & fig 6.2 the same but claimed to be taken differently ?-)
fig 3.11 a & b transposed :-(
Very good info for beginner, intermediate shooter........2007-01-04
I've been shooting film for years, and have been using a digital SLR for a couple years, and I was surprised at the amount of things I learned from this book. Canfield gives a basic intro to the aspects of SLR photography in the digital world, and explains how the basics of photography are affected and enhanced with the use of digital SLRs. Some of the stuff is for beginners (focus, exposure, etc) because he does take care to address shooters who are stepping up from a P&S (point & shoot) digital camera. He then takes you through the mechanics and theory of digital imaging and the methods to optimize your photos, both in the camera when shooting and on your computer afterwards. Lots of helpful tips and very up-to-date equipment and software recommendations (as of 2006, anyway). A couple shortcomings: Some photo and caption mistakes. A car described as speeding down the freeway (to illustrate freezing motion with a high shutter speed) is clearly parked and unoccupied, and a few other photos had incorrect or transposed captions. The book is published by a small independent press and these mistakes can happen. I could find no real errors in the main text and I would recommend the book regardless.

Good beginner book.......2007-02-02
This book would be very helpful to a true beginner lots of tips and explanations. Very easy to read and follow no rocket science here. I would recommend this to anybody who is starting out in closeup and or macrophotography
Shaw's "Closeups in Nature".......2006-07-22
"Closeups in Nature has provided a good technical approach to closeup photography, especially for the amateur photographer. I was in need of information relative to lense specifications and technical data to try and sucessfully photograph some difficult subject for publication. THis book gave some very generic insight on how to start that photo process and some guidance on how to develope a personal technique.
Classic.. but needs revision.......2006-03-10
This is an excellent book.. if you still use equipment that you have purchase during early 80's. Although the same photographic principles apply, this book can definitely benefit from some major revisions.
Very Good Book.......2005-06-08
This book is very good for Beginners to Intermediate Level Photo Enthusiasts. It has couple of tips and examples which the reader has to grasp and note down till they start using it and make familiar with it. Overall a Great Book for the price with pictures, explanation, Shutter Speed and Aperture values. Lot of new photography students wonder hey how did you get this picture ? What shutter speed and Aperture did you use ? The book indirectly gives you all the answers. Spend time reading it (no Rush) and you will explore new techniques which you can practically use and implement. I Recommend this book.
Out of date - too little advice on technique.......2004-11-02
This book is from 1987, I briefly read the reviews saying that it wasn't in the digital era, OK I figured that's fine, how out of date could it be? However, I didn't expect that so much of the book would be dedicated to functionality that's now fully automatic, such as TTL Flash, and TTL exposure metering.
It's certainly a very interesting technical read, that provided me with an understanding of all the different macro options, lenses, filters, extensions, TC's, reversing rings, bellows, reverse mount adapters, lens stacking, etc. However, it wasn't for me.
I was after something that would show technique, or provide advice on how/where to find the shots he was taking, but the book doesn't cover that at all, to my dismay the book starts with the author writing "it always surprises me that folks find it hard to find subjects" but then provides no advice. After having bought a 60mm Micro lens I was hopeful this would provide direction, but other than "I probably should have bought the 105mm lens" I didn't get any direction from it.

Customer Reviews:
Best Therapy Yet for daughter's adhd/dyslexia/dyspraxia.......2007-03-08
Having tried multiple alternative therapies to treat our daughter's adhd/dyslexia/dyspraxia we were suspect that anything would work. Since our daughter did not crawl properly as a baby, this therapy made sense - go back and have her crawl. The results were impressive - almost a year after starting the therapy she is more organized, pleasant, and compliant. She mostly does her homework independently. She is on target for her grade although her writing and spelling are still weak, they are improving. Her coordination is outstanding now. She used to trip over everything and fall 1X/week on the playground. Now she never falls. School is so much easier for her than it used to be. She is able to stay seated and her writing is less labored. Combining this therapy with the Feingold diet (she still had residual anger issues, plus lots of allergies which led us to believe Feingold might help her), we have a child who is almost neurotypical in every way. This is not a quick fix and takes much dedication, but the results we feel are worth it.
This book has changed my life!.......2006-01-29
The exercises in this book have definitely changed my life. I can remember better, focus better, and organize better. Although this book is geared toward helping children, I am over 40, and these exercises worked for me. I was diagnosed with ADD just a few years ago. This book is well-written, well organized, and very genuine in voice. I fully recommend this book to anyone who shows signs of this STNR reflex still bothering them. I believe this is a breakthrough in ADD and ADHD treatment.
Finally, A book that I think reveals a drug free solution to hyper active people........2006-01-18
Dr. Miriam Bender should be applauded for her tireless research in revealing a misunderstood subject/label "ADHD". I have completely read this book and have started using the exercises with my child with positive results so far. The author, Nancy E. O'Dell organizes and addresses the subject very clearly so any layman can completely understand. If you have a child with hyper activity and are sincerely looking to rid your child of medication, it is in my opinion that you should study this book.
I am very pleased with the concept out lined in the book as it gives real solutions to a frustrating behavior condition that many children/adults experience in their daily lives.
Curt de la Cruz

LIFE CHANGING BOOK!.......2005-05-20
After many therapies, medications, and exercises, we have finally found the underlying cause of our son's ADHD. This book clearly explains what some children miss in their early development. Then it shows you detailed exercises that can cure the problem, not just treat the symptoms! Although the exercises require a commitment, we saw results after only one week! At the end of the 8 month program, we had a "normal" child who was able to focus, sit still, and function completely typical for his age without medication! WONDERFUL!
This is a great book! Learn to eliminate hyperactivity.......1998-11-28
If you want to learn how to really treat hyperactivity, the core issues and causes of hyperactivity, then this is the book for you. So many books only address the symptoms, but Drs Cook and O'Dell go for the underlying causes. And the treatments don't involve drugs, either! Kudos for your brave foray into an overworked subject using innovative and workable treatments.

Book Description
If you're a serious photographer, you know that no other camera offers as much sophistication and versatility as the digital SLR. The drawback to this sophistication comes in the form of tedious and lengthy user manuals that can make it difficult to find the essential information you need to get started. Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography provides you with a concise introduction to the most important features of your dSLR camera. Each topic is covered in two- or four-page spreads with plenty of illustrations and images, making it easy to follow along. Eliminating the frustration of timeconsuming user manuals, this book is the ideal guide for any new dSLR owner who wants to start taking great pictures right away.
Customer Reviews:
Prosumer reference for the new or prospective owner.......2007-09-25
I would describe myself as a committed amature or a prosumer photographer. In the next few months, I will be upgrading to a digital SLR in the 6-10 MP range. But which one? I consider myself knowlegeable about photography, but the array of features of dSLR cameras was overwhelming. Which are going to be important to me, given my typical needs?
This reference was just what I needed! Using a generic composite illustration created (through the magic of Photoshop) from three or four different popular dSLR cameras, this book walked me through common features located on the camera body, as well as typical menu options. It explained what each feature does, in what situations you'd typically use/need that feature, and the advantages and disadvantages of "tweaking" that particular adjustment. Then, it moved on to different popular flash options, including different kinds of flashes, common settings, and how each works with the camera.
Finally, this book discussed various types of lenses, advantages and disadvantages of each, which are typically most (and least) expensive, and situations in which it does and doesn't make sense to purchase that lens. It also discusses ways in which a dSLR can work with lenses and flashes you might already own - even manual ones from film days.
This is not a book on how to compose a photograph, but rather, on the mechanics of actually setting the camera to capture your shot. It doesn't dumb things down, but it doesn't get into anything too mechanically or scientifically technical. (I don't want to BUILD a camera - just USE it!) It explains options in language that should be easily understandable to anyone who is a sophisticated enough photographer to want a dSLR in the first place.
I still don't know what model dSLR I want to buy, but, with this reference, I am now equipped to comparison shop. BUY THIS BOOK!
Good Beginner book.......2006-11-10
I am new to DSLR's. This was a good book to get me comfortable and on my way. I would recommend to new users.
A top pick.......2006-09-24
Any who have a new digital SLR camera will appreciate this quick start-up manual covering all the basics common to these cameras. Plenty of illustration and color photos pack pages that survey DSLR-specific techniques, setting up lighting, using lenses, and more. The color photo examples include all technical specs for reproducing effects, while quick sections on texture, histograms, and more offer plenty of depth. A top pick for any DSLR new owner, no matter what model they've chosen.

Well-written, well-designed, excellent primer.......2006-07-28
Always eager for something to read in English, I picked up several of this author's books on a recent visit to New York. This one I actually got for a friend of mine back home, but I found myself totally absorbed in it on the plane ride. What a great idea this is!
You'd think that digital SLRs are too "advanced" a topic for a simple book like this one, but Busch obviously recognizes that many DSLRs are going to be purchased by people who have never held such a camera in their hands before. They are so affordable now that it just makes sense to get one and gain all the flexibility and expandability they offer, rather than invest in an expensive compact digital camera with far fewer features.
But what do you do when you're confronted with all those buttons and dials, and, even, a lens that comes right off the camera and can be replaced with another one? I'd say you should read this book. It starts at a very basic level, never talks down to you, and provides exactly the kind of information that new DSLR users need to begin taking pictures. I wouldn't recommend this book to experienced DSLR owners. It's really too basic for them. But that's a good thing for everybody else.
A real page turner!.......2006-07-26
I really like the approach taken in this book. It's really one you can browse through, looking at the fine photos and scanning the titles at the top of each page until you find a topic that interests you. You can discover more about how memory cards work, how to use automatic focus, and the best way to set up your camera. If you already have some knowledge of digital SLR cameras, you can read the information in any order.
Or, if you're really new to DSLRs, you can start at the beginning and get an education real fast. It really should take no more than an hour or two to read all the best nuggets in this Quick Snap Guide. Then, you can keep it at hand for reference. If your are looking for more depth and have more time to spend, this author's Mastering Digital SLR Photography covers this same information and more in a lot of additional detail.

Book Description
An American artist of Brazilian origin, Vik Muniz has come to stand out as one of the most articulate and innovative artists of his generation, equally at home working with images of chocolate sauce, spaghetti marinara, or the detritus of hole punchers.
In doing so, he has carved out a unique niche within contemporary photography: one of trickster and philosopher as well as creator of compelling and delightful images. Reflex: A Vik Muniz Primer is a privileged, guided tour of the contents of Muniz's pyrotechnic imagination. The collection of essays Muniz contributes walks us through each of his major series, and unveils the thinking and historical influences behind each image.
Customer Reviews:
Great writer as well.......2007-04-07
I agree with "mdr" that the book only scratches the surface and presents just couple of works of most of artists series. I have to admit, I am not that super much into his art. But the writings are the most interesting part of the book. Mr.Muniz is very good at writing of his process of making art. It's interesting to get into artist's mind.
I like the chocolate cover.......2006-01-30
Overall, this is great retrospective book of Vik Muniz. Several comprehensive essays and interviews. I would have wished if his early works, chocolate works, and the dust series (whitney show) have been more presented as they are critical for Vik Muniz's career. However, amongst the several Muniz books, this is probably the best one (but could be better in the future).

If you believe Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness, our children are in grave danger of becoming illiterates--and the McGuinnesses are the only ones who can save them. Reading Reflex is an exhaustive how-to guide for the reading instruction method they've developed called Phono-Graphix. Phonics and whole language take a beating here, with the authors accusing both methods of failing generations of would-be readers. Their approach, unabashedly touted as far superior, stresses the 43 sounds of the English language, treating letters as symbols of these sounds. Phono-Graphix teaches children to separate each phoneme in a word so that the phonemes can later be blended back in the right order. If this sounds familiar it's because the same method was heralded in 1997 in the well-publicized book Why Our Children Can't Read, by psychologist Diane McGuinness (Geoffrey's mother).
Parents may find the first long chapter on the history and process of learning how to read a bit tedious and technical. But since each chapter--and the method--builds on these thoughts, it's a must to read the book from cover to cover. Harder still is accepting the McGuinnesses' claim that Phono-Graphix has a 100 percent success rate. Much of the research cited in their book seems to have been conducted by the authors themselves, with no indication of comparison groups or follow-up studies. Still, numerous schools throughout the country and in England have adopted the method. And the McGuinnesses' tone of alarm may ring true for some parents frustrated with their children's struggles to read. Phono-Graphix represents a new alternative where none existed before. Future analysis by outside evaluators will show whether it deserves the confidence its creators possess. --Jodi Mailander Farrell
Book Description
HELP YOUR CHILD
UNLOCK THE
SOUND-PICTURE CODE
Reading is the single most important skill for any child to develop. And the key to learning how to read effectively is recognizing the sounds that letters and words represent. With the help of the revolutionary system known as Phono-Graphix, you and your child can discover the sound-picture code that is the foundation of the written English language.
An effective and easy-to-understand approach, Phono-Graphix enables you to teach your child to read in one-tenth the time of phonics with a 100 percent success rate. In just eleven weeks, you can bring your kindergartner to first-grade-level reading -- even learning-disabled children can reach grade level or higher in just twelve weeks.
Reading Reflex provides you with:
* Simple diagnostic tests to determine your child's reading level, and a Literacy Growth Chart so you'll know what goals to establish
* Detailed instructions and illustrations to help your child develop strong, consistent reading skills and to correct ineffective reading strategies such as part-word reading and memorizing
* Fun and easy-to-follow exercises, hands-on materials, worksheets, stories, and games that you and your child can do together
* Enjoyable lessons that are carefully constructed to meet the interests and capabilities of children of all ages

Some Illustrations of words were unacceptable in my classroom.......2007-07-03
Unless this book had a major revision in its illustrations from the time I went through training, to use it in my varying exceptionalities classroom, it would not be acceptable to use in a group setting. What happened is that I had a girl who was overweight. The word "fat" was illustrated with a chubby little girl. Of course the boys in the classroom gave the picture a "name", and the girl was mortified. That was not the only picture the students could not identify correctly. Several had British meanings, but not in American use. I quickly shelved the book, along with many other teachers in our school. (It was purchased with school district funds.) The concepts, including the phonics chart - a good one - were some I had already been using, by creating my own materials. So I am not opposed to the entire book, only some of the illustrations used.
Mixed opinions..........2007-03-26
We're not doing all the exercises, because frankly I didn't want to cut up the book, or go to the trouble of scanning and cutting all the cards. That was a little too time consuming for the amount of time my daughter took to complete the activities. HOWEVER, reading this book DID make me do quite a bit of thinking about exactly what troubles my daughter was having. We are doing the Hooked on Phonics system, but if that doesn't cover all the bases, I will come up with some additional activities to get the phonemic "pictures" that she needs, and I will probably turn to this book as a resource in doing so.
By the way, I figured out that my daughter's BIGGEST problem was that she would look at a couple of letters and guess the word. This was pretty much what came of our school's method of "looking at the pictures for clues" and memorizing entire words. So I am having to break a bad habit!
Fantastic.......2007-01-16
If you have a child who struggles with reading you need this methodology. Phonics based reading, decoding. Highly recommend it.
I can see success with this method.......2007-01-08
My three year old enjoys learning with this method. It is just so natural and flows with ease. I can see my learning disabled six years old succeeding too, though a little more laboriously and slowly. Sure beats the public school special education program!
Phonics by any other name..........2006-08-11
...is still phonics...while calling it "phono-graphix" may be little more than a sales ploy, the authors indeed seem not to understand the phonics method as it's currently practiced...they seem to confuse phonics with the language that appears in many so-called "basal" readers -- e.g. "See Spot run. See Bob run. See Spot and Bob run."...such "basal" readers have very little relation to true phonics instruction...regardless, what the book presents is in fact basically just old-fashioned phonics...phonics probably is best for getting down the basics necessary for starting reading...but there are other phonics options -- my own favorite is "Explode the Code"..."Reading Reflex" is adequate but there's nothing special about "phono-graphix"...shop around -- there's better stuff available.

Best Research Tool.......2006-11-10
A new approach to learning problems, easy to apply and definitely worth pursuing.
Necessry information that complements the Tomatis work.......2006-07-10
By all means read this book. It gives you information that will deepen your understanding of the nervous system and how it functions when it is a bit off.
This book will interest parents, teachers, professionals who work with people having learning/movement issues. It offers a way to identify patterns that are left over from infancy.
Many high achieving adults will also find their quirks here.
This is not a book of recipes, but it will give you a good starting point.
It is more complex than Brain Gym, but covers similar material.

Occupational Therapist.......2006-07-06
Excellant resource for looking at how prolonged reflexes can affect learning and behavior, also gives a chart for grading a reflex and ways to inhibit it. Great for those working with children, but is beneficial for adults as well.
Creating more awareness.......2004-12-17
Few people are aware of the crucial role of primitive reflexes in child development. While primitive reflexes do not directly affect cognitive development, their presence, when they should have integrated by the age of 3, may signify various learning challenges, such as attention deficit and poor motor skills.
This book does well to raise the awareness by giving a scientific basis for why primitive reflexes affect learning and behavior. Unfortunately, the author does not reveal how she seeks to integrate those reflexes. Probably a case of not wanting to reveal trade secrets, but as far as I know, others have used various methods, such as getting the child to crawl, using rhythmic movements or isometric exercises.
