5 out of 5 stars A great starter book for High School.......2006-11-14

Great book that summarizes ICT related information for High School computer courses.
Useful as a written resource for both students and teachers, and for teachers trying to help students look for resources beyond Wikipedia...
Basic information only, but covers a lot of ground. The best 'beginners' textbook that I have come across and used.

A good but very basic and superficial introduction to the field. I would prefer to see some topics explored more in-depth.

I have not received my book yet. It has almost been a month. I have e-mailed the seller several times but she always seems to have a reason why I haven't recieved it. I e-mailed her 2 days ago with a request to refund my money but she said that it should have been shipped by now, that it was at her parents house. At this point, I am very dissatisfied with this particular service. I must also add that I ordered app. 10 books via your service and had no problems at all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book on Complex VoIP Networks.......2006-12-15

This book is intended for network engineers, IP Telephony engineers, and Telco engineers who are tasked with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of VoIP and IP Telephony networks. This is an intermediate level book and that the reader understands IP networking and at least is familiar with the Cisco courses: CVoice, CIPT, QoS, IPTT. These imply a basic understanding of VoIP and time-division multiplexing (TDM) voice fundamentals, the basic concepts and configuration of basic IP voice routers and Cisco CallManager basics.

This book is not so much an Exam Cram as a more traditional reference book. That is not to say that it doesn't cover the material that will be found on several Cisco certification tests. It gives a firm foundation in the complex VoIP networks that in which Cisco specializes. Obviously this book covers Cisco equipment, but as Cisco is the major manufacturer of such equipment as well as providing for the certification of workers in the field, that's not a bad place to start.

This book has the advantage of a very good writing style by the three authors. This is important as I don't find computer books to be nearly as much fun to read as say a good sci-fi novel.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome AVVID book.......2006-11-24

I work for a large Cisco reseller and purchase many Cisco Press books to augment knowledge base and assist with best-practices. I have to say that this book is one of the best Cisco Press books I've ever purchased and probably the best Cisco Press AVVID book.
I've been searching for a comprehensive source for DSP information and deployment guidelines, and COR theory. This book does an excellent job on explaining both. It is a must for anyone working with or provisioning DSPs.
In other matters, it is well written and talks plainly of other gateway technologies that AVVID engineers run into day-after-day.
If your looking for VoIP books, this is a must for your library.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of info on GW-GK.......2006-11-24

I bought this book to study for my CCVP Gateway Gatekeeper exam, and read it from cover to cover. Great book!! the most comprehensive source of information on Cisco voice gateways and gatekeepers in my opinion. The book starts with overview of gateways and different protocols like h323, MGCP, SIP, and does deep dive into some of the complex (less understood)topics of VoIP relating to gateways. SRST and Dial plan chapters are very comprehensive and deal with every aspect in the real world situation. DSPs have always been the confusing topics of VoIP. There is a complete chapter dedicated to DSP in this book after reading which there is no confusion left in my mind about DSPs and their usage in gateways. Finally Tcl scripting, and Vxml are covered in depth, followed by gatekeepers, IP to IP gateways.
I definitely recommend the book for any one who is taking the CCVP test. I am also using it to study for my IE Voice.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind book on Cisco Voice Technology.......2006-11-13

This book is a great practical guide to help people both understand Cisco gateways and gatekeepers and configure them properly. This book describes the Cisco voice gateway and gatekeeper theories and protocols in a way that readers can apply to their own networks. It provides examples, screen shots, configuration snips, and case studies in abundance. The book also includes the typical tasks and issues in deploying voice gateways and gatekeepers, in addition to advanced features and capabilities. Emphasis is placed on the accepted best practices and common issues encountered. It is not written specifically as a preparation for the Cisco Gateway Gatekeeper exam, but the topics that are covered on the exam are included in this book.

The target audience for this book includes network engineers, IP Telephony engineers, and Telco engineers who are tasked with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of VoIP and IP Telephony networks. This book also serves as a resource to CCVP and CCIE voice candidates who are preparing for the written or lab exams. It is assumed that the reader understands IP networking and is familiar with the topics covered in the Cisco courses on CVoice, CIPT, QoS, and IPTT. This includes a basic understanding of VoIP and time-division multiplexing (TDM) voice fundamentals, the concepts and configuration of basic IP voice routers, and Cisco CallManager basics. I describe this book further in the context of its table of contents.

Part I, "Voice Gateways and Gatekeepers"
Chapter 1, "Gateways and Gatekeepers"-- This chapter provides an overview of components of an IP voice network, including different types of gateways, such as routers, standalone devices, and switch modules, H.323 gatekeepers, and IP-to-IP gateways (IPIPGW). It contains a review of the Multiple Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), H.323, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP), and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) protocols. It also describes different types of call agents that are used in IP voice networks. In addition, it introduces the network used throughout the book in examples and case studies.

Part II, "Gateways"
Chapter 2, "Media Gateway Control Protocol"-- This chapter covers how MGCP implements call signaling, describes call flow using MGCP, and discusses the pros and cons of the protocol and when to use it. It then covers implementing MGCP gateways--configuration of the router, addition of an MGCP gateway to CallManager, configuration of dual tone multifrequency (DTMF) relay, some security features, and troubleshooting of MGCP gateways.

Chapter 3, "H.323"-- This chapter discusses the implemention of call signaling with the H.323 protocol, some of the protocols that are part of the H.323 suite, call flow using H.323, and the pros and cons of the protocol and when to use it. It then covers implementing H.323 gateways--configuring the router, using toll bypass, adding a gateway to CallManager, configuring DTMF relay, allowing H.323-to-H.323 connections, configuring both H.323 and MGCP on a gateway, using H.323 security features, and troubleshooting.

Chapter 4, "Session Initiation Protocol"-- This chapter describes how SIP implements call signaling, describes the various SIP functions and how they participate in the call flow, and lists the pros and cons of the protocol and when to use it. It covers implementing SIP gateways--configuring the router, using SIP toll bypass, adding the gateway to CallManager, using SIP security features, allowing SIP-to-H.323 connections, and troubleshooting SIP gateways.

Chapter 5, "Circuit Options"-- This chapter examines the various analog and digital circuits that gateways use to connect a VoIP network to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It looks at the different signaling types, features, and uses of each type of circuit; issues such as echo cancellation; and selection and sizing of the circuit.

Chapter 6, "Connecting to the PSTN"-- PSTN connections are examined in more depth in this chapter. The analog coverage includes a discussion on configuring and troubleshooting Foreign Exchange Office (FXO), direct inward dial (DID), and Centralized Automated Message Accounting (CAMA). The digital coverage includes explanations on configuring and troubleshooting T1 and E1 PRI, BRI, and channel-associated signaling (CAS) connections. The chapter also discusses caller ID and name delivery considerations.

Chapter 7, "Connecting to PBXs"-- This chapter covers the configuration of analog PBX trunks using Ear and Mouth (E&M) and FXO interfaces, and digital PBX trunks using CAS, PRI, and BRI interfaces. It discusses Transparent Common Channel Signaling (T-CCS) and Q Signaling (QSIG).

Chapter 8, "Connecting to an IP WAN"-- This chapter covers reasons for connecting a VoIP network to an IP WAN, QoS considerations, use of the modular quality of service command-line interface (MQC) to provide the needed quality of service, and QoS over an MPLS network. Handling faxes and modems in a VoIP network are discussed. This chapter also describes the need for securing voice traffic over a WAN by using SRTP and V3PN, the implications of NAT on voice traffic, and the use of firewalls with VoIP.

Chapter 9, "Dial Plans"-- This chapter covers dial plan design and implementation. It discusses building a scalable dial plan, handling overlapping number ranges, and implementing a dial plan on gateways and call agents. It helps you understand the different types of dial peers and how they affect call routing by examining the way that the gateway selects dial peer matches.

Chapter 10, "Digit Manipulation"-- This chapter discusses various ways for a gateway to control called and calling phone numbers, including digit stripping, forwarding only a specified number of digits, prefixing digits, and expanding numbers. It also covers voice translation rules, use of regular expressions, voice translation profiles, control of the calling-line identification information, and verification and troubleshooting of digit manipulation.

Chapter 11, "Influencing Path Selection"-- This chapter covers several different ways of influencing route selection, including hunt groups, trunk groups, and tail end hop-off. The chapter examines call admission control (CAC) techniques--local CAC using maximum connections and local voice busyout; measurement-based CAC using IP SLA, PSTN fallback, and advanced local voice busyout; and resource-based CAC using Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) and RSVP agent, and using CAC with gatekeepers. It also discusses considerations when using POTS-to-POTS call routing.

Chapter 12, "Configuring Class of Restrictions"-- This chapter explains what COR is and how it operates. It covers using COR with CallManager Express (CME) implementations, and on a gateway with Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST), restricting both inbound and outbound calls.

Chapter 13, "SRST and MGCP Gateway Fallback"-- This chapter gives an overview of SRST with ways to adjust the failover and fallback times, and shows how to configure SRST on both the gateway and CallManager. It describes MGCP fallback and how to configure it. SRST dial plan considerations are discussed, along with configuring SRST call features, configuring SIP SRST, preserving calls, and troubleshooting SRST and MGCP fallback.

Chapter 14, "DSP Resources"-- This chapter examines codec considerations and configuration, digital signal processor (DSP) considerations, determination of DSP resources needed, the DSP modes, and configuration of conferencing and transcoding resources on both the gateway and CallManager.

Chapter 15, "Using TCL Scripts and VoiceXML"-- This chapter explains how to support interactive voice response (IVR) and advanced call-handling applications using Toolkit Command Language (Tcl) and VoiceXML. It gives examples, tells how to download Tcl scripts, and shows how to configure gateways to use them. This chapter also examines the auto attendant (AA) script and creation of audio files in more detail and discusses some caveats and restrictions.

Part III, "Gatekeepers"
Chapter 16, "Deploying Gatekeepers"-- This chapter provides the conceptual information that you need to integrate gatekeepers into your VoIP network. It describes gatekeeper functionality in networks with and without a CallManager, gatekeeper CAC and address resolution, redundancy and load balancing, gatekeeper security, and use of hierarchical gatekeepers. A discussion of planning a gatekeeper implementation includes placement, bandwidth, and dial plan issues. Scalabilty and multizone enhancements are also addressed.

Chapter 17, "Gatekeeper Configuration"-- This chapter is a practical guide to gatekeeper configuration. It covers router configuration for basic and advanced gatekeeper functions such as directory gatekeepers, gatekeeper redundancy, Resource Availability Indication (RAI), and security. CallManager configuration for gatekeeper use and gatekeeper redundancy is also discussed, along with ways to troubleshoot your gatekeeper implementation.

Part IV, "IP-to-IP Gateways"
Chapter 18, "Cisco Multiservice IP-to-IP Gateway"-- This chapter explains the functions of an IP-to-IP gateway, its use in service provider and enterprise environments and in CallManager networks, its use of the Open Settlement Protocol, and the way it functions with RSVP. This chapter also covers using these gateways with both H.323 and SIP, configuring IP-to-IP gateways, configuring a via-zone gatekeeper, and troubleshooting the configuration.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book with Up to date Information.......2006-11-04

This is a great read for anyone who supports Cisco VoIP in their environment or is studdying for their CCVP. It is a quick read and includes new features and versions such as CCM 5.0. They only drawback I have is I have found several grammatical errors that should have been caught before the book was sent to press. Several paragraphs and sentences are out of order. Overall a good book though.

Book Description

When friends want to know where to go in Japan, I always ask, "What are you interested in?" One friend spent every day at the Kabuki theater in Tokyo. Another ventured north to savor the culinary traditions of Tohoku. We know people who adore Tokyo, exulting in the energy of the world's most
futuristic megapolis. Others loath it and flee to tranquil Kyoto, the former imperial city that epitomizes the refinement of traditional culture. Still others visit both cities and marvel at the extremes represented by these opposing poles of the Japanese experience. The diversity of cultural and
geographic offerings can be intimidating. The two sections of this book, History and Culture and Japan by Region, are designed to make them more manageable. History and Culture focuses on specific topics and recommends where to go. Japan by Region gives the practical information you need to make the
trip.

History and Culture
"A Brief History" introduces the major historical periods and includes a list of the most important figures in Japanese history and culture; their names appear in uppercase letters throughout the book. The chapters that follow provide both an overview and a practical reference on various subjects.
For example, "Cuisine" contains bilingual "menus" from which you can order food in restaurants. Most of the chapters conclude with a list of recommendations. Any place that is mentioned in both the main text and the list appears in uppercase.

Japan by Region
The ten regional chapters appear in geographic order, from north to south (see map on p. vi). The largest of Japan's four main islands, Honshu, and the smallest, Shikoku, together make up seven chapters. The remaining three chapters are devoted to Hokkaido, Kyushu, and the Okinawan archipelago.
Each chapter begins with a brief introduction and lists the best attractions, special interests, and seasonal events.

Transit Diagrams
The transit diagram at the beginning of each regional chapter shows the main trunk line (usually the bullet train) traversing the region, together with other train and bus lines that branch off. The main junctions on the trunk line are assigned roman numerals and treated as jumping-off points from
which to explore side routes; the stations along the side routes are assigned arabic numerals. The text describes in numerical order each main junction, followed by the side routes; their direction is denoted by the letters "N" for north, "E" for east, and so forth. For example, suppose you want to
visit Dewa Sanzan (transit key number IV:W3) in Tohoku. To see how to get there, turn to the Tohoku transit diagram (p.152); go down the trunk line to the fourth city, Sendai, then go west three notches. The text follows the same organization and is, in effect, a series of mini-itineraries.

Dining, Lodgings, and Local Maps
Dining and lodging facilities are listed at the end of each town or locale. Telephone area codes are usually listed beside the lodgings heading. Shops, restaurants, and hotels will appear on local maps according to a number-key system. (See inside front cover for a key to symbols.) Ratings are
awarded on a scale of from one to three stars based on quality, service, and atmosphere. Credit-card information is supplied for every establishment for which the information was available.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide to the sights of Japan.......2007-07-17

In my opinion, this is the best guide to the sights of Japan - good information about the monuments and the objects contained in them, and the history and significance surrounding them. The maps are very well done, too. The practical information (food and lodging) is actually quite good, but the book has been out for a while and may be aging. Also, it is not targeted to very budget-conscious travelers; it may be good to carry a Lonely Planet guide to help with those aspects of the trip.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book but hard to find specific stuffs.......2007-04-25

Good book and nice overview but it is hard to find specific stuffs for Tokyo. Rest of Japan was ok.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of information, though I haven't utilized it yet.......2006-11-29

I purchased this book in anticipation of a trip to Japan (haven't gone yet, next year). I was looking for maps of places to visit and what I got was not only some detailed maps for different places to visit, but I also got descriptions of many of the places, tips on taking a trip to Japan (never would have known that many places charge you a service charge for using a credit card and most transactions should be made with cash) and plenty of cultural notes. You also get detailed train maps; essential if you plan on using Japan's most important form of mass transit.

If you are looking to take a trip to Japan and aren't planning on using a travel plan designed by a travel agent, this is definitely a very nice book to help you plan your adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Just one guide book needed!.......2006-11-28

This was fantastic! If you were to see and do exactly what was suggested you would be all set! We absolutely loved this book! You would be just fine if you only had this one book. I trust it completely. A+ for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for traveling in Japan.......2006-02-09

This book is weighty but great! It has all kinds of information that is pertinent and useful for all travelers to Japan. The cultural and historical sections are not only informative but also pithy and interesting to read. The descriptions of all the sights are excellent and the maps are helpful. You can get more detailed maps at your destination but the maps in the book give you an overall picture of the areas. The only negative is that some of the restaurant and hotel info is outdated.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2007-10-09

Worth buying and seeing his movie -- a great self-help book for any one of any age.

    5 out of 5 stars My Oasis.......2007-10-02

I needed this book like a nearly dead, confused, thirsty traveller wandering aimlessly through the parched desert needs water.
Over the past 2 1/2 years I have read, referenced, and reread this book countless times. I also bought the book on tape and often listen (sometimes just a chapter) for an easy self-centering. Thing is- I'm the sort that rarely watches a movie twice and if I love a book I might read it again- in a couple years. I can't get enough of this timeless wisdom- truly a map to concious living.

All I can say is this is the only "spiritual read" and "self help" book that I gravitate back to time and time again. It truly covers every pittfall and challenge to the human condition.

Thank you Dan Millman- I'm so very gratefull for you!

    5 out of 5 stars Ascend.......2007-06-22

This book takes you up the summit of our selves, step by step through well yet openly defined pathways that lead to some consciousness which is all you'll need to keep coming back to-awakening through reading is the ideal experience and why we should do so. Each chapter or gateway has several short to mid size sections that makes it great for commuting and chewing on nuggets of wisdom. This too I found through the library web catalog quite gratefully while this book includes the Peaceful Warrior workout that also makes it worth buying so we can learn and pratice enlightenment through all our day to day actions.

5 out of 5 stars This book is practical.......2007-01-20

Dan Millman has placed the most practical guide I have seen for living the ins and outs of the real world. We can't go sit on a mountain or retreat to a lake hideaway to revive ourselves. This book tells you how to live the 8-5, rush hour traffic, life while maintaining yourself physically, mentally and emotionally. This is what everyday enlightenment looks like.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure Trove of info. for everyday enlightenment.......2006-07-09

This guidebook by Dan Millman has useful and wise information for everyone. This book is not your typical trite self-help book that's been rehashed 1000 times.

Dan Millman has done extensive training in meditative disciplines, mystical practices, and other endeavors in the search for enlightenment. While he found these practices to be highly inspirational and wise, he also realized that these practices didn't do any good if you couldn't perform your everyday tasks in an enlightened manner. Thus-Everyday Enlightenment.

The book offers 12 practical and well thought-out-of areas or gateways to pass through for optimal growth as a person emotionally, physically and spiritually. Some of the gateways are: self-worth, money, health, emotions, taming the mind, trusting your intuition, sexuality, love, and serving others. As you apply the suggestions in each chapter you'll find yourself becoming more successful with that particular gateway. When you combine all the insights and wisdom you've learned from the gateways you can't help but live in a more satisfied way.

Dan makes it clear that none of us are ever going to perfect these gateways. They serve as signs and guides to lead us on the path of continual improvement. After all, enlightenment is what you do in the moment. In other words, it's the moment-to-moment awareness and actions that we bring to the present that make us enlightened. No one is ever completely enlightened-they just act more enlightened than others in their day-to-day affairs.

I found many of the anecdotes in the book to be inspirational. Especially inspirational was the chapter about serving others. There are many wonderful stories of people doing extraordinary acts of kindness to help others. If you don't find these moving you might want to get your pulse checked.

The wonderful thing about this book is that Dan writes in a clear fashion that is highly accessible to anyone. He also offers practical examples that aren't just fancy esoteric abstractions. Another thing of importance is that the information in this book doesn't depend on your personal beliefs, sexuality, religion or anything similar. The information rises above factional differences to a unified place that works for all humanity. However, you have to have the effort and willpower to apply the lessons taught.

What makes Dan's writing so impressive is that from these common bonds of enlightenment that apply to all of humanity he elaborates on them in a way that has personal meaning. He doesn't preach to people but accepts them as they are and shows them a path to take. He realizes that everyone's path is a little different but at the same time it's the same as well...The paradox of enlightenment. Read this book for yourself and start applying the techniques and lessons contained therein. This will open up a move vivid picture of reality that creates happiness, enlightenment, and awakening.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Foundation in Computer Concepts.......2006-05-19

i received a b.s. in mgt/mis in the 80s and recently took a self-paced community college course that used this as a textbook as part of a 2nd degree program i am pursuing. i wanted to refresh/update my knowledge in the field.

this is a comprehensive overview of computers presented in a clear way with wonderful study aids. i particularly enjoyed the programming, enterprise systems, and networking chapters. it also covers career fields within IT. what really makes this book outstanding is the website that comes with it. at the end of each chapter are tests and tutorials which you can do online. the labs are excellent and i loved the one on chapter 4 which explained the guts of the computer and then had you build one! it had you draw a network diagram and assign ip addresses. these types of tutorials really help "lock in" the subject matter. students today have the best tools to learn. i wish i had this 20 years ago!!

i recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about/brushing up on computer skills. for folks out of school, this is a great way to get the lingo.

to check out the online version go to [...]. each chapter is summarized on this site with a wealth of information to learn and explore.

    3 out of 5 stars Technology Education.......2006-03-11

This is an interesting book to start your knowledge on the Technology field. However, in comparison with other sources
(i.e. The Hardware Bible) it does not have the broadness on
certain subjects.Overall this title is excellent when you want to start in the technology of communications.

4 out of 5 stars Discovering Computers 2006..........2006-02-06

So far so good... this book is an excellent educational IT tool for those interested in learning about computers!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books.......2005-05-13

This is one of the best books in this field, for Introduction to Computer (CS, MIS, IT, Computer Literacy, etc.) and my choice textbook for the introductory courses.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Beginner's Text........2005-02-09

DISCOVERING COMPUTERS 2005 is a textbook that we used in an introductory course on computers in business class that I had. The book is a great tool for anyone who has had no experience with computers to those who have had a limited experience working with computers. It provides a foundation of most of the current terms and concepts about computers and how those things are applicable in life. The book is filled with colorful illustrations, current photographs, and detailed graphs. The text is easy to read and with all the illustrations, photos, and graphs it doesn't take very long to read an entire chapter. My only complaint about the book is that for all the key terms and concepts that are introduced, there is no glossary to look those words up. Other than that, it's a great text for an introduction to computers class.

    Book Description

Following last year's successful The Haunted Air, F. Paul Wilson returns with another riveting episode in the saga of Repairman Jack, the secretive, ingenious, and heroic champion of those whose problems no one else can solve. As Dean Koontz says, "Repairman Jack is one of the most original and intriguing characters to arise out of contemporary fiction in ages. His adventures are hugely entertaining."In Gateways, Jack learns that his father is in a coma after a car accident in Florida. They've been on the outs, but this is his dad, so he heads south. In the hospital he meets Anya, one of his father's neighbors. She's a weird old duck who seems to know an awful lot about his father, and even a lot about Jack. Jack's arrival does not go unnoticed. A young woman named Semelee, who has strange talents and lives in an isolated area of the Everglades with a group of misshapen men, feels his presence. She senses that he's "special," like her.Anya takes Jack back to Dad's senior community, Gateways South, which borders on the Everglades. Florida is going through an unusual drought. There's a ban on watering; everything is brown and wilting, but Anya's lawn is a deep green. Who is Anya? Who is Semelee, and what is her connection to the recent strange deaths of Gateways residents-killed by birds, spiders, and snakes-during the past year? And what are the "lights" Jack keeps hearing about-? Lights that emanate twice a year from a sinkhole deep in the Everglades . . . lights from another place, another reality. If he is to protect his father from becoming the next fatality at Gateways, there are questions Jack must answer, secrets he must uncover. Secrets . . . Jack has plenty of his own, and along the way he learns that even his father has secrets.

4 out of 5 stars Jack goes to Florida.......2007-06-12

This here is 7th Repairman Jack novel, and the first to leave the New York City area Jack makes his home ground. Responding to a emergency with his father, Jack travels south and gets involved with deformed Southerners. Excellent ending to this one, while Jack fights the Otherness in the midst of hurricane Elvis.

5 out of 5 stars GATEWAYS to GREAT READING!.......2007-05-27

Now this is the way to write terrific and superior action/adventure!

    F. Paul Wilson's 7th Repairman Jack novel is much better than the last one - The Haunted Air - with Jack finally getting away from New York and going into the wilds of Florida's Everglades. A fantastic setting for a fantastic romp full of misfits and witches hiding out in a secret locale in the Glades, coming out every three months to prey on senior citizens in a nearby old folks home called - Gateways.

Here is probably the best all around adventure since the 1st novel - The Tomb. Jack helps his dad who is the next victim for the magical misfits of the hidden Glades, thus giving the readers an inside look at Jack's dad, Tom. And he is so much more than he seems! And eventually, he and Jack team up to battle the forces of evil during a hurricane.

Gateways never lets up, never gets dull. And F. Paul Wilson never gives his fans rehash from previous novels. (Something another writer who pens the Outlanders series must learn.)

But like literary giants of this genre such as James Rollins and Laurence James and Brian Lumley, just to name a few, F. Paul Wilson always seems to deliver all-new material with each and every new novel. Never rehash!

There is much mystery and suspence here to balance the action and adventure, with rich characterizations of both Good AND Evil. Something you don't often find.

The plot and pace reach and peak finale here, with Jack finally cementing his estranged relationship with his colorful dad, revealing his identity and the truth of his revenge upon his murdered mother. Great stuff, this!

If you love top-notch storytelling, along with ever-growing characterizations, as well as hair-raising action and adventure with touches of sci-fi-horror-fantasy, then this series is for you.

But according to the sales rankings, the high-mark reviews, it seems that the vast majority of people already know. And that my wife and I are the late-comers. But better late than never, eh?

Hollywood and/or cable TV conglomerates really outta take a look at this awesome series, and think about making it a major motion picture movie event. It would make a mint!

We can't wait to read the next installment of Repairman Jack.

5 out of 5 stars High Voltage Thriller.......2007-05-17

This entry in the Repairman Jack series doesn't feature quite as many of the usual set piece where Jack helps people get even, but it doesn't need them either. The strength of this book comes in the exploration of Jack's relationship with his father, which is brought about when Jack's elderly dad is injured in a car accident in Florida. The Everglades makes for a great setting in this latest battle with The Otherness, while the colorful cast of characters and action-packed adventure make this book well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Repairman Jack in the wilderness.......2007-05-07

Repairman Jack's got a family problem. His father has been in a car crash and is in a coma in Florida. Despite the fact that for the last 15 years he has had little to do with his family Jack braves a commercial flight to go down and help his dad - however for Jack there are no more coincidences, even far away from his beloved New York.

This is a family centric Repairman Jack novel. It was interesting to find out more about his father, but compared to some other instalments in the series it was quite laid back. Despite that, it's a book I enjoyed and makes me want to read the next book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Jack is back!!.......2007-02-23

I won't bother to talk about the plot since it's covered by all the previous comments, but I do want to say that "Jack is back!" (and I don't mean Jack Bauer). I've read all the previous six Jack novels and Wilson has yet to run out of steam.

This may sound strange, but I would like to see F. Paul Wilson do a Jack novel without the supernatural element, where Jack just does his "repairs" on the bad guys ala Equalizer/Godfather style. Most of his books have such subplots unrelated to the main supernatural one, and I find these quite entertaining. I bet Wilson could pull it off.

For neophytes to computing, the authors give a gentle introduction to the main popular usages. Nothing too complex. But they show how easy it is to browse the web and to use email. These are still the first two killer apps of the Internet. The emphasis is on "gateway" in the title. Namely that if you have a computer hooked to the Internet, a vast amount of information and interactions become possible. From music to movies to social networking websites and more.
