This is a perfect book for a Christian Library. The concept is based on God Kingdom. This book is perfect to use in Sunday School classes or just for personal study. I enjoy reading it and I'm still using it as a reference.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-09-24

This book changed the way I've viewed myself and introduced me to a world I never knew existed. It revealed my position as a child apart of a royal family. Thank you, Dr. Munroe. My prayer is that every child of God gets this book and discover who they really are.

5 out of 5 stars Most important subject.......2007-08-14

Myles Munroe has hit on the most important subject in the bible, The Kingdom Of God. The emphasis has been on everything but the kingdom for far to long. Munroe has re-focused our attention on the importance of seeking the Kingdom of God. His unique insight on the subject gives the reader a view of the Gospel that would otherwise not be seen. Being from the Bahamas, he has lived the part of a kingdom dweller and knows first hand what it's like. He then correlates this experience with the life of a believer in Jesus Christ and what comes out is a tremendous work on 'Kingdom living'. If you're serious about your walk, this is a 'must read'.

Thank You Dr. Myles Munroe for allowing God to use you to share so great truths about the Kingdom Of God.

5 out of 5 stars I am finally getting past the door.......2007-06-27

This book is an illumination of truth in a world wasting away in denominational and religious darkness. I thank God for the grace to stay with my faith until this point to read a book that is so dynamic and confirms the good work that God, through His Holy Spirit, has started in me. Prior to this book I thought I was crazy or that everyone else just wasn't getting it. If it's not the off the shelf cracker box Jesus, most people don't accept the idea that our faith is deeper than just Sunday morning church. Thank God for people like Myles Munroe who take the time to spend with the "tutor" and re-discover the truth.

The Kingdom has arrived in my life. The message and life of Jesus Christ finally makes sense and is practical for everyday living, and I mean living. I am free to live life.

After reading this book, I am beyond enlightened and now I'm transformed and my mind has been renewed. I am free from religion and the burden of tradition and also all foolishness and live as a Kingdom citizen.

Thanks Pastor Myles for this book, God is good.

5 out of 5 stars It's all about the kingdom, not tradition.......2007-09-07

This book arrived very quickly in new condition. If there is anyone out there seeking a new level in God and tired of traditional pulpit stories that don't quench your thirst for relationship with God, run to order this simplistic, real understanding of Jesus' will while on the earth and his will today as well for believers. In essence, read it in order to clearly realize how your life has been robbed by erroneous teachings and doctrines of "yesteryear." Whatever you do, get this book and read it and read it, and read it. You will not regret the small investment.

    5 out of 5 stars Clarifying Christianity!.......2007-08-29

Myles Monroe has a gift of cutting through the religiosity of our cultural Christianity and revealing just why God came in the form of man to redeem us from the results of sin, thus returning us to the beneficial rights provided by the sacrifice. If you arent sure if you are a sheep or a goat, take the time to read this, for Heaven's sake! Or buy it for a pharasee you care about!

5 out of 5 stars The Glory Explained.......2007-08-25

I found this book breathtaking and very informative. Talking about being squezzed Myles Monroe explains it just like it is. A Great Write.

An important book for Christians and those investigating religions. It reaches into a neglected area of our religious teaching. However, it should be read as an addition to our knowledge and not as a narrowing of our focus.

    Book Description

In its first edition, Statistics set a new standard for introductory texts, written in accessible language that teaches students how to think about statistical issues through real-world examples, such as political polls and Galton's regression paradox, and in terms of models that underlie statistical inference. Retaining these core strengths, the Fourth Edition adds a diverse body of new examples, exercises, and data sets, and has been thoroughly updated to reflect the most recent developments in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Math can be fun! :-).......2007-07-16

I generally agree with what others are saying. What's so unique about this book is that... get this: you'll get one of those rare math textbooks that are *fun* to read. Well... in a nerdy sense. I wish it was updated more recently though, because most of the samples use data back from 70s or early 90s at best, which, of course, does not make the book less correct or helpful.

I am re-learning some of my school classes (graduated with BS in Applied Math in 98) and I wish I saw this book when I took statistics back in college.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect tool...for some jobs.......2006-11-06

    D. Messer asks how his/her review can be so different from Alice's. That's easy. They're both right. They are looking at the same book through different lenses.

If the goal is to explain what's really going on "under the hood" in an introductory class, there's no better book than FPP. However, it works its magic by discarding things that don't matter--like mathematical notation. I would argue that students who take a course using FPP would be able to successfully tackle problems that would cause others to shrug their shoulders from lack of comprehension.

However, it comes at a price. Students do not see the mathematical notation that is necessary to pursue the subject at advanced levels. Imagine, if you will, being an instructor with a class of students who had completed an introductory course with excellent grades and wouldn't recognize the formula for Student's t statistic in standard notation.

I've used FPP in a university setting. It works fine, BUT there has to be careful coordination with teachers of follow-up classes so that they can adapt their methods accordingly, that is, for a class who has a deeper understanding of the principles of statistics without having been exposed to the usual formulas in the traditional way.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't Ask Alice.......2006-06-24

I'm not sure what book Alice read, but I find it hard to believe it was this one.

I won't bother repeating what so many others have said in other reviews, as I find them to be in alignment with my own opinion. However, I find Alice's review puzzling. How can so many other reviewers find this book to be so helpful, yet an instructor of the topic found it difficult to use as a course text? I actually feel like we read different books, as her description doesn't agree with my experience.

1 out of 5 stars not the best preparation for my students to move up.......2006-04-28

I'm fascinated by the rave reviews for this text. I used it for a community college stats course and once I was in the classroom with it, I became aware that I had some problems. It is true that it's written in a friendly style and has plenty of exercises, but I found it to be poor preparation for my students who will be going on to higher levels of statistics in behavioral science courses.

I found myself explaining, more times than I wish to recall, how formulas look different in other statistics books, and I was disconcerted at the lack of use of symbols that one usually sees in beginning statistics courses. Simple terms most commonly used in statistics were not introduced at all, and most statistical tests were not mentioned. Many students found it to be cumbersome and a bit overwhelming.

It's my own fault, really. I did not spend enough time perusing texts. And my familiarity with statistics prevented me, when looking it over, from realizing how much was really missing. I realized that my students would enter bachelor's programs lacking some very basic information that is always used in statistics for the behavioral sciences. Most of my students plan to earn graduate degrees; I had to spend quite a bit of time preparing notes for them as well as lectures explaining formulas, symbols, and terminology that "some of" their higher courses might use. And with nary a mention of ANOVA or any other higher level tests, I felt I really had done my students a disservice.

I began to wonder - have I been out of school so long that things have changed this much and I'm not aware of it? But - as I am teaching at a state college, stats texts started trickling in from other publishers. I saw that it was not me. This massive text, costing my students $120, is lacking quite a bit that they should be exposed to - to better prepare them for future statistics studies in the behavioral sciences. This was certainly a bitter lesson for me! I had to waste far too much time putting together information that was missing just so my students would have the course they should have.

I recommend Sally Caldwell's text, "Statistics Unplugged" for beginning students - at least in behavioral sciences programs. It's a third the cost, a third the SIZE, and much more reader-friendly. And it contains the information that I had to supply to my students just so they would get what they paid for.

I do not recommend this book. I'll certainly be much more careful in future when choosing textbooks.

    5 out of 5 stars A must!!!.......2006-02-17

This is perhaps one of the most enjoyable textbooks I have ever laid my hands and eyes upon. And to think that it is meant to teach you statistics. The authors use an unconvential approach to the subject, but manage very successfully to hit the heart of the matter. In other words, they go beyond formulas and mathematical conceptions and push you to understand the logic behind statistics. What does represent? How should we interpret? What are the possible fallacies? All of this while guided by the simple, entertaining yet thorough language employed. A must have for all that want to be introduced to the strangely wonderful world of statisitcs. Simply read the praises on the back cover to get a sense of the book's power.

I am a HUGE fan of Garth Nix's works. The books, expecially in this series, capture my attention every time to where I feel like I can't put them down until I read the very last punctuation mark. Lady Friday followed along with the other books, and I cannot wait for the next two to finish out the series!

This was yet another great book in this series. I was so disappointed when I got finish with it in less than 12 hours. I cannot believe I have to wait another year for Superior Saturday and then another for Lord Sunday!

Garth Nix's latest ' The Keys to the Kingdom' addition is LADY FRIDAY, telling of Arthur Penhaligon, whose friends have been captured by the Pipe in a world where the army controls most of the Great Maze. Pitted against the ruthless Lady Friday, Arthur finds himself in a race to win control of the House and assume his role as a rightful heir - or lose everything - in this fifth book of the series, recommended as a top pick for prior fans.

5 out of 5 stars An already exciting and at times scary adventure.......2007-06-01

On the fifth day, there was fear...

Leaf wakes up in a hospital ward and realizes something strange is going on. There are several people with her, but they all appear to be sound asleep, and there are no medical items. Leaf remembers that Lady Friday was a nurse at the tent hospital, but it's not until a frightened hospital cleaner tries to save Leaf from being detected that Leaf becomes aware of the danger that she --- along with her Aunt Mango and several other sleepers --- is in.

Meanwhile, Arthur wakes up from a nightmare in the Citadel. The last battle has left him shaken, but he appears to have defeated the Piper for now. Unfortunately, the New Nithling army has control of the Great Maze, while Superior Saturday causes trouble by cutting off the telephone lines and controlling the elevators of the House. To make matters worse, the Dame Primus, since gaining the Fourth Part of the Will, has unwonted, barely-concealed moments of rage. Arthur isn't sure he can trust her, but he has no choice. He is trying to figure out what happened to his family in the week that has passed on Earth, as well as locate his friends who have been captured --- or worse --- by the Piper.

Then, a messenger from Lady Friday arrives bearing a letter and a gift. Lady Friday has apparently abdicated her position and will turn it over to whoever can find the Fifth Part of the Will and the Fifth Key. For Arthur, this means he has to go against the Piper and Superior Saturday and possibly gain control over them. However, the week hasn't been going well for Arthur, and it gets worse when he is unexpectedly transferred to somewhere within the House, with no known way of getting back to the Great Maze or to the Secondary Realms.

While Arthur tries to make his way to Lady Friday's Scriptorium, he encounters some familiar enemies and meets a few new characters, including the Paper Pushers, who have an unusual but interesting line of work. Arthur has more work cut out for him, but when Leaf discovers Lady Friday's real motive --- "experiencing" --- the day is further seeped in the fear of the unknown.

LADY FRIDAY, the fifth book in Garth Nix's The Keys to the Kingdom series, adds another dimension to an already exciting and at times scary adventure that will have readers looking forward to the weekend.

I was in the process of introducing some new processes relating to dealing with our cusotmers, so I purchased this book. It is wonderful - and if you want a real treat attend the park after reading it. It will amaze you how this organization goes out of their way to EXCEED the customer's expectations. 3 out of 5 stars Both Honest, and Dishonest, Just Like the Magic Kingdom.......2006-07-09

I can't give this book a one because it does summarize Disney's business morals well, BUT, it leaves out what is obvious, it's lack of respect for God. Disney, as this book shows, relies on pleasing the customer, not God. It's also helpful in that it does give some good business advice.

Here is a summary of the "keys" to the magic kingdom, so to speak (these are quotes):

    1. competition is always who the customer compares you with
    2. pay fantastic attention to detail
    3. everyone walks the talk (every cast member [employee] is asked to help the guests [customers]
    4. everything walks the talk [meaning all the products and scenery is to reflect Disney's care for the customer's happiness at Disney and with Disney]
    5. customers are best heard through many ears [meaning through survey's and the letters they send to Disney]
    6. reward, recognize, and celebrate [the employees if they do a good job, if not, lol, don't say anything (how nice)]

I have no clue where to put this since it wasn't one of the keys, but here it is:

-Always make eye contact and smile
-Exceed guest expectations and seek out guest contacts [whatever that means]
    - Always give outstanding quality service
    -Greet and welcome each guest
-Maintain a personal standard of quality in your work [and if it's personal it's automatically gonna be a good thing cuz...]
-go beyond the call of duty
    -Demonstrate strong team initiative
-Communicate aggressively with guests and fellow cast members
-Preserve the magical guest experience [meaning?]
(And the above instructions are guidelines not rules the book says)

    7. everyone makes a difference

This is a good book to read (tho not buy) to see how the how some secular business minds think and how it parallels the Bible's laws in some ways.

This is an excellent tool for managers. While a good manager knows the seven secrets, the presentation in this book reinforces what you know. The secrets are presented in a different format that makes you think of other ways to motivate your staff. What makes this book really stand out is it is an easy, interesting book to read. Most books of this type are presented in a boring, academic format...while this is presented through various characters...those we have in our workplaces. I would recommend this book for all managers...especially those first time managers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Biology GRE Preparation.......2007-10-07

Although it's not marketed this way, Schaum's outline is a concise yet complete study guide for the Biology GRE subject test. Topics like the endocrine system, plant evolution and development, and nutrition, which are given short shrift in the Princeton Review and Kaplan study guides, are fully covered in this book. More diagrams are provided (although there are no color figures - ditto for PR and Kaplan), as well as handy review tables. The explanations are at an appropriate level for GRE examinees: there is not too much extraneous information. Occasionally, the authors will throw in a humorous aside or phrasing (see def. of sexual selection, parts of Ch.17, etc.), which makes you pay closer attention, but overall the tone is serious (no BS analogies or condescension here).

At the end of every chapter are worked problems in essay and multiple choice formats. These questions cover GRE material but aren't presented in the same style. If you're using this book for GRE preparation, you should also consider buying a book with one or more practice tests in order to familiarize yourself with the exam format.

5 out of 5 stars This Book's Got It All!.......2007-01-17

I bought this book to prepare the DAT. It helped so much and I couldn't have made it without it. I do recommend it, it's way better than those common books dealing with how to prepare the DAT, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, they're just not as specific as this one. Totally worth the money, go for it!

4 out of 5 stars Useful book for recalling established knowledge.......2006-11-08

Well organized, full text book with essential topics on biology. Excellent tool for GRE exams and anyone with basic knowledge on biology, who needs a quick reviewing.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD Reference, LOTS to Read.......2006-07-25

My favorite chapters included Kingdom Fungi, Photosynthesis, excretory system and structure and function of chloroplasta. Like a previous reviewer, I used this book to prepare for the biology section of the DAT (Dental Admission Test). This is a good reference, it explains with examples that get the facts to stick to your brain. Yes, it requires studying, but then again what subject doesn't?

Another great book I totally recommend is "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations". Volumes 1,2 and 3. It is written by Patrick Leonardi. It is an excellent review for the biology portion of the DAT exam..

2 out of 5 stars Too much information... Just make it simple.......2006-02-27

I was looking to get up to speed to teach an intro bio class for community college. After reviewing bio texts, I bought this book thinking that it would be a great summary, review and offer quiz questions for bio. I wanted it to be to the point, revelant, and a pithy supplement. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. This book didn't highlight or sum up bio. It went into in-depth discussions that might be of interest to grad students. I looked at Biology the Easy Way and liked it much better.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-21

This is William Manchester at his best. This is fascinating reading and fascinating writing. Of course Winston Churchill was quite a character but to be honest I didn't know that fact until I read this book and its companion volume.
After reading this book I put it to my mind that I would read everything that Manchester wrote. I've got a couple more to go. You can't miss with this purchase. A great story, great writing, and good history. What more could you ask for?

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic read.......2007-06-18

I am a little half way through the book, but it already is one of the best books I have ever read. The book deserves all the accolade. Manchester's approach to biography is a little different from many others in that he did not shy away from coloring the narrative with events that were yet to occur. He always hinted the historical significance of events in light of what happened later. I find this extremely helpful. For example: Churchill's fascination with early airplanes, his conception of tanks when dealing with a domestic riot are just two examples. These illuminated Churchill was indeed ahead of his peers in recognizing important trends.

The buildup to WWI is masterful. The book weaves Churchill's struggle with the Irish Home rule question together with the naval arms race with Germany in 1913. Since we know WWI started in 1914, the realization that Churchill and the British government were struggling with a domestic problem (which surely was exploited by the German Kaiser) enhances our understanding of the immediate pre-war times.

I knew the old US of A was not a world player before WWI. This book adds to that impression. Until the outbreak of the war, the US is just not on Churhill's radar: it does not show up much in his writing, travel, and speech. Yes, he did a book tour in the US, but that was before he started his political career.

Can't wait to read the second half of the book.

    1 out of 5 stars .......not a secret anymore.............2006-12-11

Actually it is very sad to mention this blunder against humanity:

When the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in October and November 1914, Britain's communications with India and the East via the Suez canal was immediately placed in jeopardy.
There was a secret agreement with Germany signed in August 1914 by the Young Turks that was troubling the Russians and taken as warning of the forthcoming trouble to The Tsar. The Russians regarded their Caucasian terrirories were also placed in jeopardy.
Consequently, the British and French, in order to protect their future `colonies' and bisect the `sick man of Europe', had to act forcefully. They opened another front in the South with the Gallipoli (1915) and Mesopotamian campaigns.

Anxious to score his first military encounter with `the enemy', Winston Churchill, in his capacity as Lord of Navy, prematurely urged a combined French and British naval incursion into Gallipoli. But the Turks were successful in repelling the British, French, and Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. and pushed their eventual withdrawal and evacuation.

((By contrast, in Mesopotamia - Iraq- after the disastrous Siege of Kut (1915-16), British Empire forces - mainly of Indian troops - reorganized and captured Baghdad (March 1917). Further to the west in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, initial British failures were overcome when Jerusalem was captured in December 1917, and the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under Field Marshal Edmund Allenby, broke the Ottoman forces at the Battle of Megiddo in September 1918))

Russia, the protector of the Greek Orthothox Armenian population, sent her best troops in the Caucasus. The Turkish, Vice-Generalissimo Enver Pasha, supreme commander of the ex Ottoman Empire armed forces, was a very ambitious man. His aim and everpresent dream was to conquer central Asia. Enver Pasha, like Winston Churchill, was not a practical soldier. He launched an offensive with 100,000 soldiers against the Russians in the Caucasus in December of 1914.
His main enemy was the severe Weather conditions.
Insisting on a frontal attack against Russian positions in the mountains , Enver lost over 80% of his troops at the Battle of Sarikamis, in the heart of the tough winter season.

In 1917, Russian Grand Duke Nicholas assumed senior control over the Caucasus front. Nicholas tried to have a railway built from Russia (Georgia) to the conquered territories with a view to bringing up more supplies for a new offensive. But, in March of 1917 (February in the pre-revolutionary Russian calendar), the Czar was overthrown in the February Revolution and the Russian army began to slowly fall apart.
Hence, the protector of the Armenians was gone.

Winston Churchill blunder in Gallipoli, opened patched over wounds and re-ignited animosities between the Turks and their Armenian neighbors. In 1915, the Armenians were the victims of his cowardice. The Turks committed a HOLOCAUST against the Armenians that immediately started after WC debacle in Gallipolis.
The mass murder of the Armenians was indeed the first Holocaust of the twentieth century.

    5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANT BIOGRAPHY - WELL DONE!.......2006-07-27

This is a brilliantly written biography of one of the most fascinating characters in history. Like most of Mnchester's work (I must admit to being a big fan), this is a very readable biography, well researched and holds the reader's interest from page to page. We see so much of Churchhill in his role as a WWII leader that we tend to forget there was a young man, living, learning and growing before the back and white films we see today. It is good to be reminded of this from time to time. It is also, for those interested, to learn how a world leader of Churchill's calibre came into being, how he developed and why he was the way he was. This work gives us great insight to those questions. Cannot recommend this work highly enough.

    Book Description

La Vie En ROSE -- New cookbook takes recipes from one ofParis's most fashionable restaurants and places it in the eager hands ofhome cooks. It might come as a surprise to some that one of the most trendy andsuccessful bakeries in Paris is run by an Englishwoman. But it shouldn't. With the triumphant success of Rose Bakery in Paris's 9th Arrondissement,Rose Carrarini quickly earned a reputation for creating simple, yetuncompromising foods that focus on the importance of using fresh, flavorfulingredients and a loving attention to detail.Like the Rose Bakery itself,Carrarini's new cookbook BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA: The Many Little Meals ofRose Bakery dissolves the distinctions between restaurant cooking and homecooking, and holds firm to the belief that flavor need not be complicated.Carrarini has always believed that simplicity is the key ingredient togreat food and a great life, and it was this philosophy that led her toopen London's influential Villandry in 1988 and Rose Bakery, theAnglo-French restaurant in 2002. Tucked away on a side street near theGare du Nord, Parisians line up daily to sample the lunchtime display ofsalads, tarts, cakes, and light fare at the charming b+-ite.At RoseBakery, it is evident that Love of food has become a universal language. It is this universal language that makes BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA pure delightwith recipes from 100 of Rose Bakery's most popular dishes, from breakfaststaples such as Crispy Granola to afternoon treats, including Sticky ToffeePudding and Carrot Cake, as well as soups, risottos and other perfectdishes for a light lunch. In BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA simplicity is indeed the golden rule, from therecipes and techniques to the structure of the cookbook itself. The bookbegins with a chapter on techniques and ingredients, with thoughts andadvice on such matters as peeling, oven temperatures, and moisture, anddescriptions and tips for such ingredients as olive oil, butter, vanilla, and marigold. Then Carrarini moves straight into Breakfast, providingdozens of simple and delicious recipes, including Fresh Mixed Fruit Salad,Lime Grapefruit and Ginger Juice, Honey Granola, Traditional Porridge,Perfect Scrambled Eggs, Ricotta Pancakes, and Blueberry Scones. Lunchbegins with numerous soups, salads, pastries, and risottos, and thenprovides main courses that range from Asparagus and Almond Salad withChicken to Braised Lamb Shank with Cumin, Aubergine and Chickpeas.BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA saves the best for last. 5 out of 5 stars A Feast ForThe Senses.......2007-05-21

This is a delightful book that operates on a number of levels. First the exquisite photographs capture the beauty of the mundane doings of the Rose Bakery. From the simplicity of a zested lemon to the ruddy faces of the apple suppliers to the delivery truck to the ooh so chic clientèle, the pictures transport the reader to this Paris cafe.

Then there is the author's story, a tale of a woman who loves food and people. With no formal training and a belief in natural, fresh and unpretentious dishes, Rose Carranini built the wildly successful business. Her sense of purpose and commitment to quality and sustainability is impressive and her affection for her patrons is palpable.

Finally, the recipes themselves are superb. Basically, there are two types of people: those who follow recipes to a tee and those who view recipes as a guide or starting point for their own creativity. The author advocates the flexible approach. She encourages the cooks to use their favorite ingredients and substitutions, cautioning that it is the method as opposed to the ingredients that is crucial to the ultimate success of the recipe. She correctly points out that cookie cutter results are impossible when using natural ingredients...the juiciness of a piece of fruit, the humidity, the weather, the rainfall or lack thereof, the temperature of the room all impact the final result. The amateur cook should not be deterred. While some of the recipes are a bit labor intensive, they all are fairly easy. Additionally there are plenty for vegans and vegetarians.

The author embodies the joy of cooking. Food should be fun not fake. Her secrets are all revealed...always buy fresh, seasonal and local; use organic and sustainable when possible and remember the most important ingredient is love.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully Quirky Cookbook.......2007-03-02

What a charming and wonderful book this is! From the lemon, rice and polenta cake to the Pistachio cake using a bit of wheat flour and ground almonds and pistachios, to the Eccles Cakes (cookies that use pie dough as cases) filled with raisins, spices, lemon zest and brown sugar to the lamb shank with cumin, eggplant and chickpeas, it's all wonderful. I've tried several other recipes, and, although I've only had this book for a few months, it's covered with smudges and bent pages.

    I love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Collections strong in original cookbooks will find little duplication of recipes elsewhere........2007-02-06

BREAKFAST, LUNCH, TEA: THE MANY LITTLE MEALS OF ROSE BAKERY comes from a trendy modern Parisian bakery which blends the tastes of home cooking with the style of a restaurant: now home cooks will have access to 100 of Rose Baker's most popular dishes and innovations - dishes not to be found elsewhere. Here are Blueberry Scones, Honey Granola, Carrot and Seed Salad, and Chestnut and Chocolate Tartlet - with full-page color photos peppered throughout. Cooks interested in breakfast, lunch and tea specialties will find plenty to like here - and collections strong in original cookbooks will find little duplication of recipes elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of small meals.......2006-12-03

I noticed the book Breakfast, Lunch, Tea by Rose Carrarini being mentioned in the Lifestyle magazine that came with Sunday The New York Times newspaper. The idea of little meals caught my eye. Over the years I have handpicked cookbooks into my small collection, but I'm constantly on the market for something that I might like or might not have imagined. The latter appeared in the form of this book. I ordered the book, opened it on a random page and - it took my breath away, literally, with its structure, beauty (needless to say - Phaidon press)and a promise of finer things, food included. I opened it on a back flap, which quoted Rose Carrarini saying "Life can be improved by great food." Oh yes - they are my kind of people! The Carrarinis prefer and prepare their food simple and natural, preferably, but not necessarily organic. They put vegetables above meat or fish with ambition to blur the line between home and restaurant cooking; they have put together menus, and based on them, a cookbook that is too filled even to be read in many sittings. Rather, it is to be enjoyed by tiny morsels that make your lunch, snack or day. A thousand thanks for this masterpiece!

    Book Description

WASPs finally get their due in this stimulating history by one of the world's leading geneticists.

Saxons, Vikings, and Celts is the most illuminating book yet to be written about the genetic history of Britain and Ireland. Through a systematic, ten-year DNA survey of more than 10,000 volunteers, Bryan Sykes has traced the true genetic makeup of British Islanders and their descendants. This historical travelogue and genetic tour of the fabled isles, which includes accounts of the Roman invasions and Norman conquests, takes readers from the Pontnewydd cave in North Wales, where a 300,000-year-old tooth was discovered, to the resting place of "The Red Lady" of Paviland, whose anatomically modern body was dyed with ochre by her grieving relatives nearly 29,000 years ago. A perfect work for anyone interested in the genealogy of England, Scotland, or Ireland, Saxons, Vikings, and Celts features a chapter specifically addressing the genetic makeup of those people in the United States who have descended from the British Isles.

3 out of 5 stars important but disappointing.......2007-09-03

In many ways this is a very important book, as it does away with the old Anglo-Saxon myth. But it's also quite disappointing. Having read an artilcle summarizing Sykes' discoveries before I lay my hands on a copy of 'Saxons...' I was already familiar with its main conclusion - most British have very ancient origins preceding Vikings, Saxons, and Romans and perhaps to some extent this was the source of my disappointment. But mostly it comes from my too high expectations. In short, I hoped for a solid work with plenty of data, information and analyses of the genetic roots of Britain and Ireland. But the hard data filled only a few pages and the rest was a waffle, inflating the book to over 300 pages where 10 sentences would suffice.
If somebody wants to read page after page on how Sykes and his team struggled to collect the blood samples then it's a book for them. However, if you want to know the genetic background of peoples who settled in the Isles in more detail, then perhaps wait for a more informative book.

4 out of 5 stars Sykes Latest Hit.......2007-08-16

Brian Sykes does it again with this most interesting book about origins of the people of the British Isles. He makes technical information understandable for the average reader.

4 out of 5 stars More history than DNA.......2007-08-13

I got this book because Oppenheimer's Origin of the British is out of print and not available until 2008. This Sykes book is excellent history, but not as much about the DNA story as I expected. But it is a good read. What is surprising and intersting is that Oppenheimer and Sykes, both Oxford scholars, do not acknowdege each other existance. Does anyone know why?

    5 out of 5 stars The Key: Oisin = R1b, Sigurd = R1a, Eshu = E3b, ..........2007-08-09

The apparent result of Sykes' study is that the underlying genetics of the Isles is Celtic through all of the regions: England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. This may not make Sykes popular with some people. The old stereotypes do not hold up.

In this work, Sykes continues to use the names for the founders of the haplogroups that he created in "The Seven Daughters of Eve" but he does not list all of the standard equivalents. You cannot tell the players without a scorecard. However, I have found the answer on the web. For yDNA: R1b, Oisin; R1a, Sigurd; I, Wodan; E3b, Eshu; J, Re. For mDNA: J, Jasmine; T, Tara; H, Helena; K, Katrina; U, Ursala; V, Velda; X, Xenia.

The Isles were the subject of waves of invasion from Romans, Saxons, Vikings, and Normans among others. One of the results of Sykes work is that two of the best known invaders left very little genetic trace. Sykes could find virtually no evidence of Roman DNA. Where was Titus Pullo? The Normans also left very little genetic evidence. It came as no surprise to me that my own Eshu or E3b yDNA was not significant, comprising a scattered percent or two. My E3b haplogroup is found mostly in the region of the warm and sunny Mediterranean, not the wet and cold Isles.

    5 out of 5 stars Well writen........2007-07-18

The book was fine,Bryan, but one suggestion I have for future editions is that a modern Map of the islands be incuded. the maps you have are fine, but they dont show the current locations, for those of us with a limited knowledge of English Geography.
