Rise Above is Gwen Shamblin's follow-up to her million-selling, spiritually based weight loss book, The Weigh Down Diet. Expanding the principles of that book, Rise Above promises to deliver readers from what Shamblin calls the "bondage" of food. Rather than offering a simple diet plan, Shamblin addresses the spiritual root causes of overeating and admonishes her readers to serious introspection. "We are not lacking for information now," Shamblin explains, "we are hurting for motivation and heart-changing cultivation." Shamblin helps readers find motivation to master their cravings for food by reminding them of God's desire to control every aspect of life. "You may eat anything," she writes, "but you are not to be mastered by anything, for 'you are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body' (1 Cor. 6:19b-20)." Shamblin, a registered dietician, conveys her nutritional expertise and her spiritual conviction in every chapter of this straightforward, commonsensical, Bible-based book.

Book Description
Captain Mackenzie Calhoun has often been accused of playing God, but he has never faced off against real gods -- until now. As Captain Kirk did before him, Calhoun has encountered beings of unnatural power and abilities verging on godhood, and who claim to be the very individuals who inspired the Greek, Roman, Norse, and, other pantheons from Earth culture.
These beings say that all they want is our worship, and in return for it will provide us with a peaceful galaxy-wide paradise of perfect health and endless pleasure. When the Federation, in the person of Captain Calhoun and the crew of the U.S.S. Excalibur, refused their offer, the resulting battle left Morgan Primus dead and Lieutenant Mark McHenry, whose own powers over time and space had proved to be substantial, in a limbo beyond death.
Now, with a wounded ship and an injured crew, Captain Calhoun, along with Captain Shelby and the crew of the Trident, must face these god-like beings once again, with the fate of galactic civilization at stake.

This is the worst Star Trek book I've ever read........2006-09-06
Yes. This is the worst Star Trek book I've ever read.
The plot was interesting because I'd never heard of this new series before...but that was perhaps one of the few saving graces. Even the presence of Spock in the story could not entice me to actually read the entire book.
I'm rather astonished that the editors let this book through. Each paragraph flowed awkwardly, with jarring syntax. The author kept using some kind of "punch line" writing style. He would give just a few facts, enough to make the reader wonder what had just happened. Then in the last sentence he'd throw in a final clarifying fact so the reader can say "Ah, that's what happened."
A good example would be from one of the earlier scenes. One of the characters was being choaked to death and was saved when his sister chopped off his attacker's arm. Instead of letting the action flow, the author chose to first show that the man wasn't choaking anymore, then to show that the hand wasn't attached to the attacker's body, and then to show that the blood flowing from the severed stump matched the color of the blood on the "cutting instrument".
Even so, with the backwards flowing facts, I read on, wanting to at least know what was going to happen. Up until page 26.
On page 26 of the paperback version, the captain actually SAID "Why isn't s/he up here?"
Ok, so the character he was referring to (Burgyone) is apparently some multi-gender person. That's fine - heck it worked for Le Guin in the "Left Hand of Darkness"... but... Really, how can ANY person actually pronounce "s/he"? Is the slash prounced as the word "slash" or is it more of "she-he"?
If the author had been using proper English, he would have realized several things. First, it's physically impossible to say "S/he" out loud, and in a 'crunch-time' situation the Captain is not going to bother stumbling over phrases like "he-she" anyway, he'd just say "he" and move on. Second, it would actually be appropriate to refer to the character as "he", and then spend maybe a paragraph or two to explain that this Burgyone was both male and female and then continue with the story.
At that point I just skimmed the book, skipping over most of the text just to see how it ended.
Then I turned and picked up a nice Ray Bradbury book to read... because although Bradbury's plot was extremly confusing, it at least had been written with better grammer and flowing text.
I am just thankful that my copy of "Gods Above" was a public copy and not one I actually spent money on.
Good follow up to Being Human.......2006-01-21
This was a pretty good follow up in the series, and the continuation of the events in Being Human, in which Mark McHenry was found to be a member of The Beings (like Apollo in the TOS episode "Who Mourns for Adonis?") and tells Captain Mackenzie Calhoun that Artemis is not to be trusted, resulting in the attack upon the Excalibur by the Beings. In this one, Mark McHenry is thought to be dead, and Morgan Primus is now integrated into the Excalibur's computer system because of an energy surge during the attack. Calhoun must work with Ambassador Spock and Ambassador Si Cwan to convince the Danteri people that The Beings, who have now ushered the Danteri people into hero worship, that The Beings are not gods and should be worshipped. Eventually Calhoun angers them and forces their hand, but he soon discovers who to destroy them. All the while, McHenry is stuck in a dimension between reality and death, while Zeus helps him `survive' a little longer. Also, we discover the true origin of Moke, Calhoun's adopted son.
Excellent story........2005-02-25
Like all the books in this series, it won't stand alone; if you haven't read what went before it, the beginning will seem rather confusing. But at least it (mostly) actually has an ending, which is rare for books in this series. (There is a teaser for the beginning of the next book's plot, but no major plotline left unsettled.) I suppose if I must choose between a book with no beginning and a book with no ending, I'll settle for one with no beginning, and this book is the finale to one of the best stories in this admittedly very good series.
The only "addition" that is actually healthy!.......2004-06-16
And that would be reading as many "Star Trek" related books as possible as well as other sci-fi works! Even though I grew up with the Original Series Star Trek, I also came to love TNG as well and, later, VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE. Being an avid fan of sci-fi in general, however, it would be an injustice on my part not to mention the many other old and new sci-fi works that both led me to Star Trek and which have forever forged my love for all sci-fi works: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "Foundation", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" books, as well as books as new to the genre as "Advent of the Corps" and others.
ST-New Frontier: Gods Above.......2004-01-10
Star Trek-New Frontier: Gods Above written by Peter David is an adventure that takes you on a ride of a lifetime. This book continues where "Being Human" has left off and takes us through an interesting story about The Beings.
The Beings are made of energy and can take the shape of Earthlike pseudo-Egyptian-Greco-Roman-Norse-Mesopotamian-Gods i.e. Apollo, Artemis, Thoth, Anubis, Woden, and Hermes just to name a few. The Beings need worship to derive their energy and to get the people to worship them they hand out ambrosia to guarantee continued compliance.
This book continues the storyline of Mackenzie Calhoun the captain of the U.S.S. Excalibur along with Captain Elizabeth Shelby for the U.S.S. Trident as they face these god-like beings in a show down. Freedom of thought vs. total compliance and worship of a pseudo-god are what's at stake. This book takes us from the Excalibur to the Trident to the planet Danter as we read on. There are twists and turns as McHenry is in a self-imposed state of stasis and is experiencing out of body experiences. The Danteri run off SiCwan and Kalinda as the Thallonians tried to pose a government with them as the head, only to be rescued by an icon in the Trek universe.
This is a well-crafted story with plenty of action-adventure to go around. The beginning of the book is a little slow going as David sets-up the story, but there is plenty of character interaction and interplay to make the story interesting as it begins to take stride. There is a good space battle scene and as space begins to open up and things happen. There are scenes in this book that take us back to adventures of Kirk and crew and the original Enterprise-1701.
All in all, this was a good, fast and interestingly enjoyable read. I gave it a solid 5 stars and it is worth the purchase price. A point of fact, I have NOT read anything by Peter David that was a dud, he is a very intertaining author that writes a well-told story.
Book Description
In the wake of rejection, abuse, gossip or betrayal, "Forgive and forget" or "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven" doesn't make the hurt go away.
No one expects the church to be perfect. But we do think that God's family should treat us with more kindness and compassion than the rest of the world does. Because our hopes for the church are great, the disappointment we feel when the church fails to live up to its promise is devastating.
Wounds caused by strangers are painful enough. Injuries inflicted by people we count as friends are crushing. Yet the wounds we receive at the hands of fellow Christians cause a wasting sickness of the soul. Left unchecked and unhealed, they affect how we view ourselves, how we relate to other Christians even how we relate to God.
Drawing from the volumes of letters he and co-author David Johnson received in response to their book The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse, Jeff VanVonderen looks at:
why hurts in the church are so debilitating.
what a welcoming, healing church should look like.
how anyone who feels let down by God's people can move past the pain and establish biblical relationships in a healthy church.
Has a fellow Christian let you down? You can rise above the disappointment.

Helpful book from a great author .......2005-03-18
I have to praise the author for his wonderful and ground
breaking books. This particular book is not one of my
favorites, but it is worth reading. I personally think it
would be more helpful to include the possibility for some
Christians to simply stop attending an institutional church
at all for a season. The idea that we "have" to be "in
fellowship" and it "has" to mean an institutional church
can be very restrictive. Some wounded Christians are
helped by finding a different church, but some heal better
by staying out of institutional settings for a season, or
for good. There is also a home church movement which helps
some people. The point is to be led by the Holy Spirit
in your choice. For some people, withdrawing from Christian
fellowship for a time until healing can occur and until
a healthier model can be formed, is the best solution. Far
too many wounded Christians hop from one abusive church into
another one. For this reason, I do not agree with the
advice that healing needs to be accomplished by trusting a
church or pastor again...just my opinion.
I do recommend reading all the books by this author.
God's Gift when I and my wife got striked down in our church.......2004-01-09
To be honest, the book has all the answers to all my questions on God, myself and church folks esp. the bad leaders out there. It strikes my heart deeply and frees me out into the air again. We have gone through depression from slight (myself) to serious (my wife) during these bad times.
The book leads me out of the clouds of how I shall see my church pastor, leaders, staff, brothers and sisters and also myself in correct ways. Even though we feel getting hurt a lot, it tells me that we DID have responsibilities on Not wearing the suitable armours around ourselves.
Lastly, it tells me how to recover step by step, which is very important to me when I step into another church. I cried and was touched by the bible quotes in the book many times. God uses the book to heal me and I feel the love from God through the book.
Healing in its pages.......2002-09-18
I just recently read this book. It is a definite re-read for me.
I've had some negative experiences and sharp disappointments when dealing with some Christians or "churchfolk". I've seen actions that didn't meet the most basic laws of common courtesy and respect, let alone the higher standards that the Bible lays out for us to follow with each other. I've seen a lot of hypocrisy, dysfunction and unhealthy dynamics in the "church". All this left me with a very sour view on church and on other Christians. I had a mistrust for leadership and just wondered if folks were really trying to follow the Bible or was it all just a big show.
This book has helped me to reconcile a lot of those issues. Here were the major points for me:
- It is okay to expect the body of Christ to act like the body of Christ is supposed to act. It is okay to expect a higher standard of morality in the church than what is seen in the world. If the Bible says, don't lie, then it's okay to expect Christians to be honest. I had begun to wonder what, if anything, I could expect from other Christians.
-This book gives examples of unhealthy dynamics in relationships and families. This helped me realize fully what I'd had a sneaking suspicion of: some of the groups that I was in were dysfunctional. I was bound to get hurt in those situations.
-In addition to discussing the hurts that one can experience at the hands of leadership or other Christians, the book very gently probes into what your role was in the situation and what your responsibility is in terms of being healed from it. However, it does NOT get into any blaming the victim. This section helped me to see that while, yes, I had been hurt by some leaders and groups, it was I who put these leaders on such a high pedestal in the first place. Sure, they led - but I followed. I chose to be in groups that were unhealthy and closed my eyes to a LOT of warning signs that would've been obvious to casual observers. Now, I know that I can make better choices in terms of relationships, and that it's not just about "finding the right group".
-This book strongly emphasizes that our focus should be on Jesus and not other people.
-This book discusses legalism and the negative effects of that and how to overcome it. It is theologically sound and give a good explanation of the Gospel and how that relates to legalism.
-It gives principles on how to establish healthy relationships. It talks about the accountability of leadership.
I could go on and on. It is outstanding book and blessed me tremendously. It's helped me to have a more balanced and positive view of the church and to get over a lot of the hurts that were hindering me. I thank God that I read this book. I highly recommend it.
Yes-God can heal and restore!.......2000-06-29
What a refreshing, enlightening book! Wonderful practical counsel from a man after God's own heart. Share it with friends! Many in the churches today need to read this book.
This is no book - THIS IS A MIRACLE!.......1998-05-16
Jeff Vanvonderan does it again. His wisdom, written with a "probe like" dialogue into your heart, helps the reader better understand his or her hurt, and therefore overcome it. Even for readers who have not found themselves hurt by ignorant, but certainly well meaning, people, this book is strongly recommended. It will prepare you with the tools to handle the hurts that come your way. (This book actually lifted me out of a critical, very clinically advanced depression.)
Book Description

Culled from interviews with Jews from varying backgrounds, this book addresses the major issues that affect all Jews, regardless of age, sex, or level of practice. From answering the question What is Judaism, anyway? and considering the relationships between Jews and their community to understanding the state of Jewish education and discussing the issues involved in keeping kosher, this book offers hints for reconciling ancient religious customs with life in the 21st century and enriching one's spiritual life.
Book Description
Philosophers and religious scholars the world over have sought to answer the question of why a loving God permits evil. In these pages, Paramahansa Yogananda provides strength and solace for times of adversity by explaining the mysteries of God's lila, or divine drama. Readers will come to understand the reason for the dualistic nature of creation- God's interplay of good and evil - and receive guidance on how to rise above the most challenging circumstances.

GOD AS A BORED MOVIE PROJECTIONIST.......2006-12-16
Religious leaders are at their worst when trying to explain evil. Though I do not agree with C. S. Lewis's Christianity, I hoped that I might learn something useful from reading THE PROBLEM OF PAIN. Alvin C. Plantinga's GOD, FREEDOM, AND EVIL presented what he thought was a logical justification of why God cannot prevent evil. Though Christian readers raved at their success, I thought they were both ridiculous. Readers also praise the Yogi's book. I must belong to a different species.
The Yogi defines Self-realization as knowing ourselves as divine beings (John 10:34), and Christ-consciousness as the projected consciousness of God. I also feel to be true because this has been my experience of God. The problem with Saints and Scriptures that claim to speak God's Ultimate Truth is that mere mortals are not permitted to disagree with them. However, "God" is invariably colored by the culture and the temperament of the Saint experiencing him. Though it is de rigueur for religious liberals to maintain that all Saints agree with each other -- I once did - all the actual evidence speaks against this. The Yogi does not understand evil; without understanding evil, how can one understand "God?"
The Yogi insists that God created evil (Isaiah45:6-7) because it provides the contrast that enables us to experience good. Misery is our best friend because it starts us seeking God. If joy were ceaseless in this world we would be content and never seek another. Once we realize our true nature, we will not mind the pain. Unfortunately, only an infinitesimal number of people, including the Yogi's devotees, have ever achieved this level of enlightenment. Since evil is omnipresent, we have no choice but to learn to experience it with detachment, or perhaps go mad or commit suicide, but I do not even want to reach a state of mind where I don't mind it.
God created the world because he recognized his own Perfection so he divided himself into many souls so that we could all enjoy him. The purpose of life is to realize that we are nothing but God's hobby, a toy created so God could entertain himself. Our existence has nothing to do with God's evolution, because God is already perfect. I find it mind-boggling that anyone can find comfort in a God who entertains himself with Auschwitz, Ted Bundy, and Tay-Sachs disease, but that's just me. God strikes me as seriously narcissistic.
The Yogi takes it as a self-evident fact that the only true thing to strive for is happiness because true happiness is God. All people, even atheists and the evil, are seeking happiness, so they are actually seeking God without knowing it. If being one with God is the Only Good Thing, one has to wonder why God was not content with knowing himself instead encaging part of himself as human souls so that part of himself is ignorant of and even hates himself. When the Yogi says God is sorry we have lost sight of Him, how can he not mean that God has lost sight of Himself?
We are not "the very Consciousness out of which this Universe has been created by God;" We are the very consciousness that we are inclined to think of as "God." There is no good reason for supposing that there is a "God" external to this consciousness. Wisdom does not consist of seeking bliss; it consists of striving for greater self-awareness. "God" can only achieve Self-awareness through humanity. Most people who do evil are people guilty of the sin of self-ignorance. But some people seem to be evil by nature, and evil does not seek happiness; it seeks destruction. Evil is a flaw in consciousness itself, a seemingly autonomous archetype within the human psyche that hates existence. (I do not imagine that these ideas will be taken seriously by many people who might read this; but at least they are coherent and far more optimistic than dismissing mankind's pain as God's purposeless entertainment).
(Peter Payne, author of CAPTAIN CALIFORNIA: A YOUNG MAN'S ENCOUNTER WITH THE EVIL WITHIN HIMSELF)
An Interesting View on Evil.......2005-06-04
I am currently researching the many views re: evil - for some reason, it has become quite important to me now...
In this book, Paramahansa Yogananda discusses his view on life -which is that life is the dream of God, a play of sorts. Therefore, if we can realize that we are esentially actors in this dream, we can become detached - watching our life as if we were watching a movie on the screen.
According to Paramahansa, the goal of this dream is to bring us all back to God (of which we are a part)- and that through good as well as evil, this is accomplished.
Evil is viewed as being essential for us to be able to enjoy the good, because if everything was already perfect, we would be much less likely to realize how wonderful and joyful life can be. Basically, we need the bad to appreciate the good.
Although I agree with many of the viewpoints espoused in this book, there are some that just don't resonate with me - at least not yet. Of course, this does not mean that they aren't true, it just means that they don't "work" for me just yet. Regardless of this slight difference of opinion, I still believe that this is an excellent book on the topic of evil.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone questioning why evil exists in our world. Even if you don't agree with all of the author's viewpoints, it still offers a lot to think about.
A Beacon of Hope in the Dark.......2004-07-11
I learned much from this book. It explained how to rise above any suffering I have experienced, and brought me a lot of hope contrary to how I was raised.
This is a wonderful book of the few I recommend that will speak to your soul and teach you how to overcome adversity. An excellent read and highly beneficial for all. Most Highly Recommended!
Divine Will and the Choice of Love Peace and Forgiveness.......2004-04-14
The deeply moving words of truth from Paramahansa Yogananda show us all how God endowed us with free will, so that we may come to learn, know, feel, practice, and act with love and peace.
This little gem and treasure of a book is as great and as big as the cosmos with Divine truth, which will illuminate your mind, and speak to your soul.
It teaches us to go within, and discover our own Divine God-Self within, where we CA N prevail in peace in our world, once we each choose to individually. It is then that the world will know peace collectively.
HIGHLY Recommended to discover your own Divinity within.

A very thought-provoking, uplifting viewpoint.......2004-02-01
How refreshing to hear a level-headed, non-dogmatic exposition on an eternally "hot" topic. This yogi makes a lot more sense to my heart than ninety-nine percent of the stuff I was brought up hearing.
