The Bible of the Field.......2007-03-24
When as a young physicist I started working on rocket nozzle design most of the material in this book had to be dug up from a paper here, a book there, or else it simply wasn't known. Now here's everything you need to know in a couple of chapters. And besides nozzle design, here in information on virtually every aspect of rockets from the design to the propellents, from concepts to testing. Most of the book is on conventional liquid or solid fuel chemical rockets, because that's where most of the action is today. There is a new chapter (from my older edition) on electrical propulsion.
The book is suitable for use as a textbook for either a one or two term course, or as an introductory book to an engineer now moving into the field, or as a reference book for the experienced. It is especially good to use when you need to come up to speed on some area of the business where you don't normally work.
The one weakness of the book is the lack of discussion on computers either in terms of engine control systems or of the design software that is avaiable. Next revision I guess.
If you love rocket propulsion you must get this book.......2007-01-19
I have loved rocket propulsion in all its forms (real and imagined) since I was following the Apollo 11 mission on television. This book will help you with every aspect of rocketry whether for direct professional relevance, hobbyist development or whether you dream with many of us of solving the problems that will allow us (as so eloquently put by the late Carl Sagan) to "dip our toes in the cosmic ocean". I believe we must swim between the stars and the nuts and bolts foundations for doing it are in this book. Go get it. Lets do it.
Rocket Scientists Use It Too.......2006-11-17
I started work with a rocket design group fresh out of a MS in mechanical engineering. One of the first things everybody told me was to pick up a copy of Sutton. It's a good thing I did, because I immediately started referring to it for just about every project I worked. After just a few months it became a dog eared, marked, and well used reference.
It's a few years later now, and I don't work with rockets full time any more. I've forgotten enough of the details that today when I was explaining a bit of rocketry to a coworker, out came Sutton again. It's still a great book.
Fantastic resource.......2006-02-20
This was a required test for a rocket propulsion class, but it has become an invaluable resource for many classes. Purchased for at least 20% less than other outlets.
A Must-Have Textbook for every Aerospace Engineer.......2004-03-27
This is the single best book on rocket propulsion systems, covering both liquid and solid rocket engines, hybrid rocket systems, and a dedicated chapter on electric propulsion. The authors include excellent illustrations and graphs to enhance the text, and practical examples which help the reader to grasp the theory. After loaning a copy of this book for over two years from my library, i finally bought it! Definitely recommended to all engineers and scientists who want to expand into the area of rocket propulsion.
Book Description
A politically polarized America is coming together over a new kind of car - the plug-in hybrid that will save drivers money, reduce pollution, and increase U.S. security by reducing dependence on imported oil.
Plug-in Hybrids points out that, whereas hydrogen fuel-cell cars won't be ready for decades, the technology for plug-in hybrids exists today. Unlike conventional hybrid cars which can't run without gasoline, plug-in hybrids use gasoline or cheaper, cleaner, domestic electricity - or both. Although not yet for sale, demand for plug-in hybrids is widespread, coming from characters across the political spectrum, such as:
- Chelsea Sexton, the automotive insider: working for General Motors, Sexton fought attempts to destroy the all-electric EV1 car and describes how car companies are resisting plug-in hybrids -- and why they'll make them anyway.
- Felix Kramer and the tech squad: Kramer started a non-profit organization using the Internet to tap into a small army of engineers who built the first plug-in Prius hybrids.
- R. James Woolsey, former CIA director and national security hawk: seeing the end of oil supplies looming, Woolsey is demanding plug-in hybrids to wean us from petroleum.
Cautioning that the oil and auto companies know how to undermine the success of plug-in car programs to protect their interests, the book gives readers tools to ensure that plug-in hybrids get to market - and stay here.
Customer Reviews:
Good research, good writing, but too much preaching to the choir.......2007-10-11
"Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars That Will Recharge America" is an advocacy book. Sherry Boschert believes in her heart that plug-in hybrid cars will change America. You cannot read this book and doubt that.
And there is nothing wrong with that. You do not have to be neutral about a subject like this to write well about it. In fact, the opposite is true -- no writer can write a good book about a subject that he or she does not feel strongly about.
But even if you are not neutral, and cannot be neutral, you need to be fair. And that's where Sherry Boschert is weak. In Plug-in Hybrids, she has not been fair. At least, not enough.
A few examples. Boschert says, "As Marc says, it's a choice between riding to the store in your Hummer today, or having life-saving medications available to your grandchild." Huh? Come again? Oil has many uses. Even the late Shah of Iran said that oil is too precious to burn. But to say that Hummer drivers are depriving their grandchildren of life-saving medications is too much. It's not being fair.
Another, more subtle example. Boschert says that GM conspired to buy up the nation's clean and popular streetcar systems and replace them with buses. That resulted in the obliteration of US public electric transportation. For that, GM was fined $5,000 for antitrust violations.
Boschert cites the film "Taken for a Ride" as her reference. That film, in turn, relies on the research of Bradford Snell. Snell's view of history -- and his finding of a giant oil company/GM conspiracy to eliminate electric public transportation -- should not be ignored. Snell has as much right to his opinion as anyone. But historians who have looked at his arguments and evidence have found them wanting. Very much wanting. In my view, and in theirs, Snell has rewritten history. Boschert relies on a dubious source to present this point as uncontroversial. That's not being fair.
There are a few other examples. Boschert notes the advantages of nickel metal hydride batteries, and says that battery technology does not stand in the way of plug-in hybrid cars. She says that the Toyota Prius makes a great plug-in hybrid car. She says that GM had no reason to kill its EV1 electric car. Nor Toyota to kill its RAV4 EV electric sports utility vehicle.
On all these points, there is another view. (Certainly GM and Toyota would disagree on the points that apply to them.) Read this book, and you would never know that. Boschert treats all these points as proved. Uncontroversial. So there's no balance to her presentation. It becomes a melodrama with heroes and villains. Real life is not that way.
Of course, if you are preaching to the choir, that's fine. And here that is what Boschert is doing. Her choir is Andrew Frank, Marc Geller, Ron Gremban, Felix Kramer, Chelsea Sexton and James Woolsey. Add to that everybody involved in the film "Who Killed the Electric Car?" None of these people will quarrel with Boschert's book.
But if that's all you're doing -- preaching to the choir -- why write the book? If you advocate plug-in hybrid cars, a balanced view will gain more converts. And a balanced view will be fair.
I enjoyed Boschert's book. But I can't help but wish that she had aimed higher. If she had been a little more critical? A little more balanced? With her research and writing skills -- and with her passion --she could have written a book that would change a lot of minds. This book, Plug-in Hybrids, will not.
What's been happening with electric/hybrid autos the last 10 years........2007-09-13
I've often wondered what been happening with electric/hybrid car development since the mid 90's and GM's EV-1. Remarkably little is written on this subject.
This book reveals the truth about what's possible, and how little the car manufacturers are doing to make them a reality. Even Toyota's Prius is a small step compared to what they could be making NOW.
A rare combination of facts and intrigue that will recharge the reader.......2007-09-01
Sherry Boschert brings her science-writing skills to bear on the thorny problem of efficient transportation on the highways. While informing us about the details of hybrid vehicle technology, she also manages to weave in the gremlins that have interfered with improving car efficiency for many years. Her portrayal of the problem of hydrogen hype is well documented and clearly explained in Chapter 3. I recommend this book highly to the environmentally concerned driver as one of the best books in the field, because it gives the reader the inside story with scientific balance.
Timely and engaging but unconvincing.......2007-08-06
In "Plug-in Hybrids" (New Society, 2006), Sherry Boschert writes about recent electric vehicles, charged from commercial power lines, with gasoline engine backup. See also Michael Schiffer, "Taking Charge" (Smithsonian Books, 1994), on the early history of electric vehicles, about 1880 to 1930.
Main merits of Boschert's book: wide-ranging account of many starts and slips from about 1990 to the present; engaging style, focused on charismatic individuals; deconstruction of hydrogen-powered transportation myths.
Main defects of Boschert's book: inability to relate vehicle speed to operating range performance, cavalier approach to environmental and conservation issues, lack of concern about long-range marketing appeal.
Boschert says plug-in hybrid vehicles can reduce petroleum use and air pollution but does not prove the case. In order to do both, widespread use of plug-in hybrids must somehow avoid stimulating new coal-fired, oil-fired and gas-fired power plants. Boschert shows no way to assure that such an outcome would actually occur.
very practical, myth-busting discussion of the facts.......2007-07-29
This book --which in some ways begins where the video "Who Killed the Electric Car" ends, but is yet independent of it --is a very practical, myth-busting discussion of the facts about the capabilities of alternatively-powered vehicles. As one might guess from the title, the book concludes that of all the possible alternatives for fueling cars, plug-in hybrids are the most practical. In fact, as the book reiterates, practical plug-in hybrids were produced and leased by the auto companies about a decade ago --and then recalled and destroyed. Today (July, 2007), news reports say Toyota and GM and perhaps Ford and others "hope" to have an electric car available by 2010. The news stories say Toyota and GM are having trouble getting much more than a range of 40 miles out of the batteries, even though this book points out GM produced electric vehicles in 1999 with a range of about 140 miles!
This book is a good primer on how plug-in hybrids work, and also explores other alternative technologies such as hydrogen and fuel cells, though for several reasons it returns to plug-in hybrids as being immediately available technology.
Book Description
The decline and instability of the financial market has led to a white-hot market in real estate. Millions of investors are moving their money from equities to real estate. As the rate of transactions increases sellers are discovering that there are some tax surprises associated with selling real estate. The two primary tax considerations are capital gains and recapture of depreciation. Between the two, Federal and State taxes can be as much as
one third of the profit on the sale of a property. Both individual investors and real estate professionals can discover legal methods for deferring or eliminating these taxes by reading this book. Selling Real Estate Without Paying Taxes is a non-technical, plain-English look at the various ways to avoid taxes when selling real estate. It explores both tax deferral and elimination methods, discusses the pros and cons of each, and gives examples of how each method works in everyday practice. This book will be a valuable tool for individuals and professionals so that they can make the most out of each real estate transaction.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and to the point.......2005-09-30
This book answered all my tax and property questions quickly and precisely. It was well written and perfect for someone who is not a CPA or property specialist. Highly recommended.
Best real estate tax book. Period. .......2004-09-18
I have read a number of books about real estate tax planning, and this is by far the best. It is clear, to the point, and very readable. The author goes through the basics of how a capital gains basis is calculated, rules about stepping up basis, primary residence exclusion rules, etc. He then discusses various ways of deferring or eliminating capital gain consequences via 1031, installment sales, private annuity trusts, charitable remainder trusts and Roth IRAs. The chapter on private annuity trusts is one of the least known, yet most valuable strategies that exists. Buy this book!
Great Book!!.......2003-09-10
This book is very well written; logically organized and concise. The information is priceless! For the cost of this book you could be saving 30% of your capital gains money! That's what I call positive ROI. This book is a must have!
Great Book.......2003-08-24
Explains what you need to know in a simple easy to understand format. Highly recommended. Very satisfying read!
It's Usable and easy to understand........2003-08-18
I was extremely happy to find a "How To "book that got right to the point. It is obvious that the author has "Been There, Done That".
The technical explanations were clear and thorough.
There are alot of new (to me) and interesting approaches on how to structure transactions. Annuities,IRA's etc.
Easy read,a lot of useable content.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed!.......2007-05-29
Given the high reputation of the DB quant team in London, I was expecting something on the line of Brigo & Mercurio's wonderful book "Interest Rate Models". Alas, it is nowhere near in terms of breath of contents and analytical depth (well, the price is higher tough). Maybe the authors cannot reveal their proprietary models or did not want to give too much away, then why did they write a usuless book and ruin their reputation?
Taken aback.......2007-04-16
While the info in the book seems to be relevant (by other people's recommendations) I've been taken aback by the authors starting each section with the theoretical coverage.
One of the best teachers - Steven Dym - said that you should think twice about any finance book that starts a new chapter with a math formula.
This book shows off with maths on the 1st page!!!
The best approach is to
1) dive into why a certain financial product came to existance,
2) how it works, and them
3) dive into theory.
Starting with the #3 will just make me try to guess #1 and #2.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview of electric cars.......2007-01-23
The Electric Car gives an excellent overview of electric cars. And as promised by the subtitle, Westbrook discusses the development and future of battery, hybrid and fuel-cell cars. All in all, this book is the best I have found on this important subject. I recommend it highly.
As interest increases in electric cars, particularly hybrids, books on the subject increase as well. Some are interesting and helpful. A surprisingly large amount are not. Few, if any, match the depth and breadth of the information and opinion in The Electric Car.
Westbrook spent his career working with electric cars. That shows in the book's detailed information and patient discussion. This is a book by an industry insider, who knows what he is talking about. What he does not know, he finds out, through contacts in the industry that he keeps active.
Westbrook does tend a little toward the pedantic. And he loves a long and complex sentence. No fluffy reading here. In fact, the book can be hard to get through if you are tired and not at the best of your game.
Nonetheless, if you have strong interest in electric cars, in my opinion you need this book.
Good introductory book.......2004-06-04
This book provides an accurate history of electric and hybrid cars, however it may be a bit lacking in terms of charting the future of electric cars and their power sources. All in all a solid buy for a intoduction to electric car technology.

Book Description
With advances driven by pressure from governments, environmental activists, and its associated industries, the subject of electric and hybrid vehicles is becoming increasingly important. Trends clearly suggest that we must educate the engineers of today and tomorrow in the technical details of these vehicles. While there are many books that provide narrative descriptions of electric and hybrid vehicle components, none cover the technical aspects from a mathematically derived, design point of view, and none serve well as a textbook. Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Design Fundamentals presents a comprehensive, systems-level perspective of these vehicles that strikes an outstanding balance between technical details, design equations, numerical examples, and case studies. Starting with some historic background, the author describes the system components, the laws of physics governing vehicle motion, the mathematical relationships within and between the components, energy sources, and designing components to meet the complete vehicle specifications. As this text illustrates, the electric vehicle is an excellent example of electro-mechanical and electro-chemical systems, one that is technically challenging as well as highly motivating to engineering students. The material presented is designed to be covered comfortably in a one-semester course. Its multidisciplinary nature and systems approach makes Electric and Hybrid Vehicles ideal for teaching electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineers all in one course.

Solid on Fundamentals.......2007-09-22
Dr. Husain is an Electrical Engineer, therefore his book focuses primarily on the electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic & electromechanical aspects of EV & HEV vehicle design. From this perspective, his book is very solid on fundamental EV & HEV design considerations and component analyses. However, the continuously variable transmission (CVT)... including planetary gearsets (used in CVTs to combine/split torque) is a key HEV component. Consequently, I view omitting their discussion as dissapointing. On the other hand, Dr. Husain's text is very well written/edited and his style of explaining technical details is conversational, yet professional. I recommend this book without hessitation.
Question the MF Momen review..........2007-08-16
One must temper the fact that M. F. Momen has written papers with the author. Such as "Lightly Ferromagnetic Rotor Bars for Three-Phase Squirrel-Cage Induction Machines".
I have not read this book but rate it as the first reviewer since the other review is invalid.
Hard to follow, not much pratical information.......2007-03-22
This book is very hard to follow. The author presents examples (and sometimes answers) without outlining how to solve the problems. This is very frustrating! Most of the work in the book is calculus-based which would not be a problem if the steps for deriving the equations were more explicit. The information is very theoretical with little practical relevance to electric car design. The author starts out by explaining generic vehicle mechanics and then jumps right into battery chemistry and motors. Very little effort is spent on the interrelationships between these elements. The author does a decent job describing motor fundamentals, but he does not spend much time discussing the practical limitations of the technology. The hybrid discussion is relegated to the last chapter of the book, and then only a few pages are devoted to explaining this technology. Most of the chapter is spent describing various thermodynamic cycles such as the Otto cycle and Rankine cycle. Curiously,at this point the author resorts to a very high level discussion of these cycles, using very little math to show the effects of the electric motor on the function and efficiency of the traditional ICE vehicle.
A timely and valuable book in EV.......2006-02-24
This book is very helpful for an extensive overview of all the design perspectives regarding EV and HEVs. Very timely book and deserves to be a constant reference for ongoing EV research.
Book Description
Wolfdogs A-Z: Behavior, Training & More is exactly what it implies; a comprehensive guide to living with a wolfdog. Wolfdog "owners" (or those who are owned by wolfdogs!) know that these canines can be a lot more of a challenge than the average dog. Nicole Wilde has worked with wolves and wolfdog mixes in a rescue, education and training capacity for over fifteen years, and generously shares her knowledge. Covered is everything from teaching basic behaviors to dealing with fear issues (see too "Help for Your Fearful Dog" by Wilde for a comprehensive guide to dealing with fear issues), dominance challenges, "Winter Wolf Syndrome," myths versus reality, and much more. No one who shares their life with a wolfdog should be without this excellent guide.

Wolfdogs A-Z.......2007-08-23
The most helpfull book, easy reading and full of information that you cant do without, if you have a wolfdog puppy.
Whether you own or just want the truth about wolfdogs - this is it!.......2007-06-02
I loved Nicole Wilde's book! It is very apparent that she is not only very experience but very knowledgeable in working with wolfdogs and her techniques applies to dogs as well. I especially appreciate the positive and down-to-earth approach she takes in tackling everyday situations sometimes associated with owning wolfdogs. In addition, she has a whole section dedicated to nutrition - whether you have a dog or cat! With the recent discoveries of poison in some dog and cat foods, she provides a crucial alternative to feeding packaged foods!
Great Book for Wolfdog Owners!.......2004-09-05
This book is the second by Nicole Wilde on the subject of wolfdogs. I think this one and her first, Living with Wolfdogs, are must-have books for any wolfdog owner. Practical advice from someone with experience, entertaining stories, lots of good photos. This book is an easy and fun way to learn more about your wolfdog and how to be a better wolfdog owner.
Indispensable !.......2001-03-15
If you share your life with wolf-dog crosses, or have an interest in knowing more about wolves and wolfdogs, this book is absolutely essential reading !!! ... Dog owners can also benefit tremendously from the behavioral insights and postive training advice offered.
New owners and long-time owners alike will delight in reading the sections on "Principles of Positive Training" (including how-to's), "Dominance Challenges", "Fear Issues" as well as "Enrichment" (great ideas throughout the book), "Veterinary Care" and much, much more.
I strongly suggest that if you are a breeder, or are involved in rescue that you lay your paws on a number of copies of this book to give to your prospective buyers or adopters. Make it part of your educational program :-) Better yet, combine "Wolfdogs A to Z" with the author's other book, "Living with Wolfdogs" for an all around excellent source of practical advice and information.
Enjoy the photos too !
An astounding sequel to the 'wolfdog owners bible!'.......2001-03-10
Wolfdogs A-Z is the most authoritative in-depth book ever written on the subject of wolfdog behavior and training. Once again, Nicole Wilde (author of Living With Wolfdogs) combines her years of hands on experience in working with wolfdogs and her positive training approach as a professional dog trainer to produce sound practical methods that achieve astounding results with these sometimes difficult to train canines. I have personally tested the easy to fallow step-by-step methods outlined in the book with my own wolfdogs with fantastic results!
The chapters devoted to understanding wolfdog behavior provide the most down to earth in-depth and precise information available in writing anywhere. How often have you wondered "Why does my wolfdog do that?" You'll find those answers here. The detailed discussions on avoiding undesirable behaviors are invaluable for the first time owner as well the practical tips and advice for modifying behaviors even the most experienced will appreciate.
Added to the books credits are excellent chapters on natural feeding (what is often referred to as BARF: Bones and Raw Food) Fun, safe toys and activities for keeping your companion busy, dispelling the numerous myths regarding these animals and much, much more.
Wolfdogs A-Z is an absolute must have for all wolfdog owners and also highly recommended for people who have one of the more challenging canines of any breed.

Customer Reviews:
Published in 1995 - Out of Date.......2003-02-07
That's all there is to say.
The book may be well written and may have been up to date in 1995 but it is now thoroughly out of date.
In the opening chapter it talks about MPEG2 as a new technology and dismisses the digital transmission of video signals because of the high cost of encoders and decoders.
The book also talks about ATM in the way everyone did in 1995 thinking it was going to extend to the desktop.
Also take note that it is aimed at enterprises and educational institutions not cable operators.
A wealth of information.......1999-11-01
A step-by-step guide that takes you by the hand in the design and implementation of an HFC system. A must read for the broadband revolution. I've read it three times.
